PROFILE Since its inception in 1994, the CSRA (Canadian Snowcross Racing Association) has been a governing body that organizes, promotes, and regulates snowmobile competitions within the province of Ontario and at selected events throughout Canada. The CSRA was created to help racers, manufacturers and sponsors benefit from the ever-expanding sport of professional snowmobile racing. The mission of the CSRA is to bring the sport of snowmobile racing to its highest level. The CSRA strives to bring sponsors, racers, manufacturers and racing fans the most organized, visible circuit in the industry.

Snowcross is today’s most popular form of snowmobile racing. It features high-flying aerial displays and compact track design. Competitors race around motocross-style tracks that feature tight turns, banked corners, and a variety of jumps allowing racers to catch “big air” in full view of spectators. Spanning 7 events from December thru March, the CSRA travels to key Powersports markets with its traveling race circuit. The series attracts hundreds of racers and thousands of spectators at each event. Sponsors of the CSRA benefit from a captive audience of race fans totaling over 40,000 for the season.

CSRA race fans are a mix of young families whose head of household is between the age of 30 and 50 years and single males between the ages of 18 and 54 years old. Occupations of the head of the household are evenly split between white and blue collar professionals with household incomes in excess of $85,000 per annum. Amongst all snowmobilers, CSRA racers, spectators and vendors, the common thread that links them together is their love of the great outdoors, the apparel that they wear, and the vehicles they choose to ride and transport their toys with.

THE NO. 1 PRIORITY

S

nowcross racing is one of the safest forms of competitive snowmobiling and CSRA officials go to great lengths to present safe and controlled competition. Safety starts before the snowmobiles enter the race course area. Every racers machine is safety checked by technical staff who inspect steering carbides, studs, lighting, engine kill switches, brake operation and many other aspects of the machine. Each rider must wear appropriate safety equipment such as approved helmets and eye protection, upper body protection (Tekvest), shin and kneepads and proper boots as well as other safety items chosen by each specific rider. The race course is designed so the first turn is wide and on a gradual sweep to

10

reduce the chance of collision as racers approach the first turn bunched together, jockeying for the right racing-line or the “hole shot.” Sharp turns and jumps are often implemented onto the course design to keep speeds down as well as to provide a challenging race course for the riders and to create exciting race action for the spectators. Spectator areas are placed a safe distance from the track to insure the safety of the fans. A minimum of six officials are on the race course at all times to assist racers should an incident occur. Near the pit area, an ambulance with two additional EMTs and advanced life support equipment are present at all times. We pride ourselves on our high safety standards both on the

race course and off. If an accident was to occur, our trackside rescue team is ready to assist immediately. Though everyone’s safety is foremost, we are sensitive to the environment as well; we enforce strict sound level requirements for all the snowmobiles that compete at our events. We hope you enjoy our snowcross racing events. If you ride the trails on a snowmobile or ATV remember to ride responsibly. If you want to ride hard and fast, do it at a sanctioned event where everyone is going in the same direction in a safe controlled environment. Remember: ride safe, ride smart and ride sober!

CSRA SNOWCROSS

T

he Canadian Snowcross Racing Association is dedicated to upholding the highest standards in snowmobile racing as well as growing the sport of Snowcross. CSRA makes it easy for the whole family to get involved in racing. In fact, you don’t even need a race sled, new racers can compete with stock trail sleds. To make it fair, modifications are not permitted with the exception that you can change or replace handlebars,

shocks, and skis. To prepare the sled to compete all you need to do is cover the headlight and tail light with clear tape and ensure that the sled has a snow flap and a functional tether cord kill switch and a handle bar shut off switch. Rider safety equipment including (approved helmet, goggles, knee pads, and TekVests) are available to rent at each event if you don’t have your own.

If a National seems like too much, CSRA Regional events offer a more relaxed atmosphere and take place throughout Ontario and Quebec. Snowcross racing provides opportunity for kids and adults to meet new friends, socialize and compete in a sport that is safe, competitive, professional and fun. Snowcross racing classes for kids, boys, girls, women and first time racers, are available at all CSRA Regional events.

RACE CLASSES FOR NEW RACERS: Kids 120cc Race Classes: Age 4-9 years: At each CSRA race there are three racing classes for kids to compete with 120cc mini snowmobiles. Polaris, Arctic Cat and Ski-Doo each make snowmobiles to compete in these classes. The 120cc classes compete to finals on both Saturdays and Sundays. Kids Novice Race Classes: Age 8-13 years: At each CSRA race, there are six Novice racing classes for kids aged 8-13 years. Novice class racers compete with mid sized 250cc Phantom 4-Stroke sleds or full size Fan cooled snowmobiles 0-600cc. Polaris, Arctic Cat and Ski-Doo each make snowmobiles to compete in these classes. New for 2012, Arctic Cat has created a detune kit that will permit Novice races to compete with the new Liquid Cooled

12

SP500. The Novice classes compete to finals on both Saturdays and Sundays. Junior Race Classes: Age 13-17 years: At each CSRA race there are five Junior racing classes for kids aged 13-17 years to compete with full size Fan, 4-Stroke, and Liquid cooled snowmobiles. Yamaha, Polaris, Arctic Cat and Ski-Doo each make snowmobiles to compete in these classes. The Junior classes compete to finals on both Saturdays and Sundays. The new Junior FI and Junior F2 classes are the best classes for new Junior racers to start in. Trail Sport Classes: First time adult racers: CSRA events feature three Trail Sport division classes that are designated for first year adult competitors. These classes are great for introducing trail riders to

Snowcross competition as none of the competitors have any previous Snowcross racing experience. There are Trail Sport racing classes for men and women. Vintage Racing: Each CSRA race has four Vintage racing classes for snowmobiles over 25-years-old. Interested in more information: CSRA hosts a free classroom-type snowcross seminar for individuals that want to try snowcross racing for the first time. The CSRA seminar will take place in Barrie on November 15, 2014. If you would like to register for the free snowcross seminar, contact the CSRA at info@snowcross.com For additional information on getting started and the 2015 event schedule. FLAGS UNDERSTANDING THE FLAGS OF SNOWCROSS CSRA Snowcross is much like other forms of racing. Track workers communicate with the racers through the use of colored flags, the definition of which can be seen below. By knowing what these flags mean fans can have a better understanding of what is going on in the race. Here’s a breakdown of the flags CSRA fans might see at a race.

Green Flag

The green flag is used to start the race and to signal the racers that all is clear.

Yellow Flag

The yellow flag warns riders to be cautious, that there is an incident on the track ahead of them. Riders can’t “race” through a yellow flag zone, meaning they can’t do things like pass other riders and the sled’s track can’t leave the snow.

Red Flag

A red flag means the race has been stopped. The race will restart with the riders in the order they were in when the race was stopped. Riders can’t work on their sleds while the race is stopped due to a red flag.

Blue Flag

A blue flag signals a rider they are about to be passed or are being lapped and should move over.

Black Flag

A black flag means the rider has done something that is against the rules. A furled black flag (flag wrapped around the stick) pointed at a rider means the rider has done something to gain the official’s attention and if they continue to do what has been done to gain the official’s attention they will receive an open black flag. An open black flag means a rider has received a penalty. It is not an automatic disqualification. For example, a rider may simply be asked to pull over and let a rider they passed illegally go by.

White Flag

The white flag signals the riders they are starting the last lap of the race.

Checkered Flag

The checkered flag means the race is complete. The first rider to pass the checkered flag is the winner! 14

As with any Motorsport, racing rules and classes are created to ensure that competition is not only fair, but also exciting to watch. Whether it’s a Novice or Junior qualifying heat, or a Pro final, Snowcross racing is the most exciting form of winter Motorsport that you will ever witness. Rider experience, snowmobile engine size, and the engine performance define the different snowcross racing classes. Each snowmobile is classified by engine size and type of engine, (fan-cooled or liquid-cooled) and if it is stock or modified. In most stock classes, racers are allowed to add traction products such as studs or carbides, as well as change shocks, handle bars and skis. If a snowmobile has any other modifications, it must compete in the Open Class of the respective division of the racer. 120 Stock 1 120 Stock 2 120 Improved

SNO PRO 500 RACE CLASS

L

ast season, the CSRA worked closely with the Arctic Cat race department to come up with a package that would make the Arctic Cat Sno Pro 500, race ready for Junior racers age 8-10. We took the info and proposed rules to the ISR meeting this past spring, and they were passed and the Novice 1 Arctic Cat SP500 race class was born. The idea behind the class is to provide up-andcoming racers a chance to race a full-size snowmobile, to help prepare them for entry into the Sport and Semi-Pro ranks. To compete in the new CSRA Novice

1 class, the stock Arctic Cat SP500 will need to have a detune kit that will make the performance of the sled similar to a Ski-Doo Freestyle 300. The kit will be available at selected Arctic Cat dealers, or through the Arctic Cat Racing department. Novice 1 Arctic Cat SP500 class rules are: • Any ISR snowcross legal ski runner allowed, must use stock skis. • Any commercially-available handlebar riser allowed. • Clutch tuning that is allowed in stock snowcross is allowed.

• Chaincase sprockets may be changed. • A restricted throttle kit not to allow no more than 50-percent throttle opening has to be installed. Throttle kit part no. 0708-088. • The ECU will be reprogrammed with the rev limit restrictions as approved by ISR and the rules committee. The ECU will carry a distinctive ID number. • The rev limiter ID name is 500LTD6300. • Track must be part no. 2602-019, or legally-filed replacement track measuring 128x15x1-inch.. •, ONly OEM-model optional suspension ski and rear suspension springs may be used. • No other changes allowed. Racers should note that the Sno Pro 500 comes with Fox Zero Pro rebuildable gas shocks that can be fine tuned per the individual rider’s needs. For more information on this class visit www. snowcross.com or contact CSRA at (905) 722-7771; or e-mail: info@snowcross.com.

TRANSITION POINT FOR YOUNG RIDERS

P

hantom Snowmobiles has partnered with the CSRA to create the Novice 250 racing class, a transition class for young snowcross riders. Powered by a bulletproof four-stroke engine, Phantom snowmobiles feature a long travel suspension and scaled down “big sled” ergonomics that prepare kids for riding race sleds. Novice 250 class riders can ride their sleds at a CSRA race on the weekend, and hit the trails during the week or on off weekends. It is one of the best ways to transition kids from 120 racing to racing full-size sleds. For more information visit www.novice250.com.

SCHEDULE December 12-14, 2014 Dayco Triple Crown National Snocross Searchmont Ski Resort, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario Located just outside Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Searchmont Ski Resort has the honor of hosting the opening race on the 20142015 CSRA schedule. Boasting 750-feet of elevation, 90-percent of the hill at Searchmont Ski Resort is covered with snowmaking equipment. When temperatures drop below freezing snowmaking begins, and often that happens in late October or early November. And the temperatures seem to be colder on the mountain, so if it is raining in Sault Ste. Marie it can be snowing at Searchmont. For that reason, Searchmont has a rich history of hosting the CSRA opening race. More than a decade ago it was the place where factories would come to shake down their new machines and see what the competition had to offer. E

ach year, snowmobile manufacturers enter competitions with the best snowmobiles they’ve built to date. The machines you see on the CSRA National racetracks represent the best technology in snowmobiling and are some of the fastest, most capable terrain machines on the planet. Here is a rundown of what you will see from each manufacturer in 2015.

SKI-DOO MX ZX 600RS A fter big changes to the 2014 racer, SkiDoo focused in on the details for 2015 with a reinforced front suspension module to eliminate cracks and reduce flex. After that, the term “lighter” shows up again and again on the spec sheet for the Ski-

24

Doo racer. The new track is lighter and has optimized pitch for less rolling resistance. The rear suspension rails are lighter and stronger, and the torsion springs are lighter and made from a high-strength alloy that should allow more consistent performance. The engine

features a 1-pound lighter crank that allows the engine to rev quicker. Tolerances in the slip gear were tightened up for better performance. Ski-Doo also refined the shock calibration so overall, the sled should have better traction and control in 2015.

YAMAHA SR VIPER RTX SE W hile Yamaha’s snowcross efforts seem to be on hold, they did make a factory-level appearance south of the border last season at the Duluth National. If they make another shot at snowcross, it will likely be on their top

terrain sled, the R-TX SE. The Arctic Catdesigned chassis is fitted with the Yamaha Genesis 130FI, three-cylinder 4-stroke engine that pumps out 130HP in stock form. FOX FLOAT shocks up front and FOX Zero Pros in the rear handle the bumps,

and the sled uses the same 129-inch track setup as the Arctic Cat. With arguably the best 4-stroke engine on snow, and the proven Arctic Cat chassis, it’s likely that Yamaha will be back in the big air game sooner rather than later.

POLARIS IQR S ome of the Pros racing this sled were barely off of 120s when the first version was released in 2005. The Polaris IQ is officially over a decade old this year and returns to competition with a new 16-position, compression adjustable Walker Evans shock package developed

by factory pro racers last season. Clickers on all shocks are independent of each other so no adjustments will affect another. Front suspension travel is 10.3-inches, rear is 13.9. The 128-inch track seems to be the sweet spot for racing, and Polaris uses a 15x128x1.72 Snowcross XT profile.

The Liberty 600 engine returns with the lightweight crank introduced in 2014; a package that got over half the hole shots in Pro finals. Hayes Type 126 brake pads handle the heat better for more consistent braking. A new graphics package rounds out the sled for 2015.

ARCTIC CAT ZR6000R SNO PRO W ith improvements aimed at increased performance and durability, the 2015 Arctic Cat ZR6000 R SX should come to the line with plenty to offer racers as well as the competition. all-around performance. FOX FLOAT EVOL RC front shocks, FOX 1.5 Zero C front track shock and FOX 2.0 Zero RC rear shock features wide range compression and rebound adjust, and the new Cyclone master cylinder is aluminum instead of plastic. Power runs through a TEAM driven clutch that features a wider range of belt

Arctic Cat

Boasting a storied history of dotted with unique personalities, Arctic Cat continues to position itself as one of the most notable innovators in the snowmobile industry. Founded in 1962 by Polaris co-founder Edgar Hetteen, Arctic Cat put itself in direct competition with its rival located just to the north. After going broke and rising from the ashes in the early 1980s, Arctic Cat has followed in the footsteps of other powersports companies and today offers a complete lineup of snowmobiles and off-road vehicles.

Polaris

A manufacturer of snowmobiles since 1954, Polaris has expanded its business offerings from those humble days to include Indian and Victory motorcycles, off-road vehicles such as the market-leading RZR and Ranger and ACE as well as military vehicles and electric vehicles. Today, Polaris still builds some of the most innovative snowmobiles in the industry including its AXYS which features a unique rear suspension with external rear shock.

Ski-Doo

Many would argue J. Armand Bombardier invented the snowmobile. One thing is for sure, Bombardier invented the Ski-Doo and since those first yellow machines hot the snow the company has been driven by the same desire Bombardier had to travel the snow-covered landscape that surrounded his home in Valcourt, Quebec. Today, Ski-Doo is the market leader in snowmobile sales and pioneered the rider forward layout used on nearly all modern snowmobiles.

Yamaha

Yamaha is a global leader in engine technology and a major innovator in the powersports industry. Yamaha is the only snowmobile manufacturer to offer an entire lineup of 4-stroke powered snowmobiles. Since Yamaha introduced its first snowmobile in 1968 with the industry’s first slide valve carburetor up to present day with the only power steering-equipped snowmobile, Yamaha has been an innovator in the industry.

INTERVIEW

HAYDEN SEVEN-TIME CSRA PRO OPEN CHAMPION

We

did some quick math and Iain Hayden has won 35-percent of all CSRA Pro Open points championships. Last season he tallied his 7th, putting the rider from Sudbury’s total even further out of reach of anyone looking to break his record. Not only that, in 2014 he was the first rider to accept the Blair Morgan Cup and he won a Harley-Davidson V-Rod. Ever the gentleman, we caught up with Hayden to see how his 2014 season went and to get a glimpse of what might be in store for 2015. OSM: Seven-time champion, so that means you’ve won 35-percent of all Pro Open titles on the CSRA circuit. Iain Hayden: I like it. It’s really rewarding 30

to win that much and every championship is unique and exciting. Some are more difficult than others and it’s never been easy. There is always new challenges whether it’s with competitors, equipment or just racing in general. The number is cool, but to still be successful at this point, I’m pretty happy with that.

know that it’s a long series and we need to take it one race at a time.

OSM: What stands out with you from last season? Hayden: We just had another solid year. We made the best of our bad days and took advantage of our good days. Fortunately our bad days were minimal. I owe the team a lot they give me a really competitive sled and I’m happy to be part of that program. Nothing really stands out though. We’ve been at it long enough to

OSM: Do you ride street bikes? Hayden: I have one street bike, my dad rides all the time but I don’t have any time. I actually sold the Harley and put it towards an airplane.

OSM: You won a Harley-Davidson V-Rod? Hayden: How cool is that? That’s by far the coolest thing I ever won. But Harley there or not I wanted to win. Hat’s off to Ken Avann and CSRA for doing that.

OSM: You’re friends with Blair Morgan, CSRA introduced the Blair Morgan Cup for the Pro Open champion and your name’s on it seven times. Thoughts on that?

Hayden: What better guy to be associated with and have your name next to? He’s an icon in the sport and I’m just fortunate to have raced with him and been friends with him. I learned as much as I possibly could from him while we raced together. OSM: Word on the street is you got your pilot’s license in the off-season. Hayden: That was my goal this summer and I finished that up in late August. I bought a plane and I’ve been flying around and enjoying it. OSM: Did you buy a plane to get somewhere or just to fly around? Hayden: I had an urge to go flying. My buddy got me up in a float plane a while back and I thought it was pretty cool. So I just said, “I’m getting my license so I can do this!” I didn’t know anything about planes but once I get into something I try to learn all the ins and outs and I knew the kind of plane I wanted. I bought a Piper Super Cub, it’s got skis wheels and floats, and I’ve been flying it on wheels for now. It’s a whole new sense of freedom. It’s a completely different feeling. I haven’t been able to wipe the grin off my face and it reminds me of when I got my first snowmobile or dirt bike and I couldn’t get enough of it. Same feeling. OSM: Motopark is still going strong? Hayden: Yeah, wide open! We had a good year. We had a little rain, it wasn’t too hot and our events went off as close as we could get them to flawless. I think all of our customers left happy and that’s what we want, we just want everyone to have fun. You’re never done building and making it better, but we’ve had some

great summers so it’s coming along. And some of our students did great and got some podiums racing this year too. OSM: How was Challenge Camp? Hayden: Drew Robertson from EvolvedSX is the brains behind the whole deal and he re-formatted the program. We started more aggressively and got them working together as a group without them even knowing it. Drew had them seeing the big picture by mid-week and no one was quitting. Everyone left positive and happy. Logan Christian, Corey Watkinson and Dylan Hall were the coaches and those guys are great too. After winning his seventh CSRA championship, Hayden received a brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycle for the year-end achievement from CSRA President Ken Avann. Hayden called the prize “the coolest things I’ve ever won”!

OSM: What’s new with OTSFF Motorsports this season? Hayden: We’re still supporting Jakob Rosko-Fong, but he’ll be riding out of the different trailer. My teammate in the big trailer is going to be Dylan Hall. Otherwise everything is pretty much the same as last year, we’re still Rockstar/Polaris. OSM: Goals for 2015? Hayden: I like winning. The older I get the more people wonder when I’m going to quit or when I’m going to get beat, and I take that as a personal challenge. No crazy goals, I have nothing to prove to anyone but myself.

INTERVIEW

GERVAIS 2014 CSRA PRO LITE STOCK CHAMPION

G

oing into the 2014 season Jacob Gervais had never won a points championship. And it didn’t look like he’d win one in 2014 either as he hovered just out of the points lead nearly the entire season. But the 21-year-old rider from Sudbury was a model of consistency, placing top finishes and scoring valuable points at every event on the CSRA calendar. In the end, his competition faltered while he stayed consistent. He proved a points champion doesn’t have to sweep every event to come out on top, he just needs to keep grinding. OSM: You won the 2014 Pro Lite Stock points championship, tell us about it. Jacob Gervais:: I wasn’t first

32

throughout the whole year. I only got the championship at the last race. I was second and third throughout the whole season, then the last race went extremely well and unfortunately the No. 1 guy had some difficulties, so I was able to wrap it up. I was pretty pumped on that. I really wasn’t expecting the win, but you don’t give up. OSM: What was your goal coming into the season? Gervais: Oh, 100-percent I was going for the championship. The year before that I wasn’t able to race a full season because I broke my hip racing motocross. So I wanted to go after the championship because I missed out on it the year before.

OSM: This is your first championship? Gervais:: Yes, I haven’t won any title up to last year. I won a few races here and there, but that’s it. I did win a Sport 500 title but that was a Regional not a National, so in my mind that doesn’t count. Even in Juniors I was always second. OSM: You won a KX250, that’s pretty cool! Gervais: Oh yeah, it’s wicked. I guess I chose a good year to win the championship. Every year they give out cool prizes, and I was fortunate enough to win that. It’s probably the best trophy you could get. OSM: Tell us about your team, G-Force Racing. Gervais: It’s my family. My mom and dad

that and started racing motocross. Since I broke my hip I quit racing dirt bikes and just train during the summer. OSM: Are you bumping up to Pro Open this year? Gervais: It was a big debate on if I should or not. No one is moving up out of Pro Lite and I’m not sure I have enough experience to race Pro Open at this point. I’ve only raced one full season in Pro Lite. Right now Pro Lite looks to be the more competitive class and more fun, so I want to stay there. I’d like to defend my championship too, and staying in Pro Lite I can do that. It’s definitely not going to be a walk in the park, but it should be fun.

and I. We started the team back when I started racing in 2008. It evolved from there, we’ve had other riders come on with us, my sister raced with us for while. It’s just family-based, couple sponsors and just a way for us to go out and have fun. OSM: You’re a student, what are studying? Gervais: I just graduated from three years of civil engineering and right now I’m studying business. I’m looking to take over my dad’s forestry company when he decides to retire. OSM: How did you get into racing snowmobiles?

34

Gervais: My dad raced motocross, but never snowmobiles. We grew up on snowmobiles though, and I wanted to try racing one year so we just went out and did it. We went out there with a trail sled and beat it until there was nothing left at the first race. We bought a race sled right there in the pits and that’s kinda how it all started. OSM: You race ATVs and dirt bikes too? Gervais: Yeah, I wanted to do other stuff in the summer in addition to working, so I took up ATV racing since I was brought up on those. I got a lot of wins before the circuit kind of went south. So we sold all

OSM: Anyone you want to thank? Gervais: Yeah, my parents, G-Force Racing, Tigercat, Mid-City Motorsports and of course Polaris, they’ve been supporting us a lot. My mechanic Guy made a rocketship of a sled and everyone else, it’s a team effort.

PROGRAM

A

ttention all CSRA racers! CSRA has teamed up with Country Corners and Speedwerx to bring you the Country

Corners Racer Development Program for the 2015 race season with the NEW 120 Briggs Improved Class. Each week

there will be six (6) Arctic Cat 120’s, with a Speedwerx 206 Performance powered by Briggs & Stratton race motor. Available for use free of charge in the 120 Briggs Improved Stock class. This new program allows kids to challenge and develop their racing skills in the 120 Improved Stock class before investing money into it. If you are interested, eligible riders are asked to sign up at www.countrycorners.net and can do so up to two weeks in advance. To be eligible racers must have one year experience in the 120 Stock 2 (age 6 to 10), and all race fees and entries must be submitted by the deadlines. Racers must also have all the required safety gear. This program has been developed to enhance the skills and growth of future racers and is made possible by Country Corners, Speedwerx, Arctic Cat, Briggs & Stratton and 139 Design! For complete details contact Brock Norris at brocknorris@nexicom.net.
