WINTER TIME!

North of Debrueville, Fresh snow on a freshly groomed trail made this day a 300 kilometer dream in Northern Ontario. The best part was that we couldn't get lost. There's only one way up and one way down from town to town.

inter is here! The lakes and ponds are tightening up, the snow has started to accumulate and the groomers are busy rolling the trails for us! While attending many fall events across North America, we noticed that both the attendance and enthusiasm have been up. It’s great to see, going in to Winter 2015. If you haven’t already planned a ride this year, or are wondering where to go or where to ride, this edition of OSM is a great starting point when planning your winter riding. We were on some incredible rides last year, and you will be able to read about some of them in this issue, along with the OSM Travel guide and Trail Map Atlas. Maybe this season you’d like to experience a new area, new trails and new hospitalities. Or visit the same rides you’ve always enjoyed. This issue is great, especially if you’re looking to go for a ride in New Brunswick, Ontario or Quebec. There are maps and editorials featured specifically on these areas. You can map out your proposed sledding excursion routes, and check the trails to give you an idea of what is available. Having maps together in one magazine makes it pretty easy. Don’t forget to check out the great products that the guys have put together for you, available in the Nomad Buyer’s Guide.

We are also updating our website www.osmmag.com daily with new excursions and adventures that we’ve ridden, or are planning to ride throughout the year. So sit back and enjoy, plan a trip and read about some of the great places to ride. Hope to see you out on the trails this season! Rich

Owning The Trails In Northeastern Ontario STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT CLARK

When

you think of snowmobiling in Ontario, the perception sometimes, and I say sometimes, is that it can get crowded. You know what I am referring to. Don’t get me wrong, I like riding in regions where you meet a lot of fellow sledders, and the restaurants are busy. It makes for a cool buzz. However, there are times that I want to stretch the legs, press the throttle and cover big kms. That part of snowmobiling is my favorite. Working for OSM Magazine affords me the pleasure of riding in some pretty great regions across North America, and I have seen it all; regions where you have to dodge fellow sledders at every corner, to regions where you can do a four day saddle bag trip, and by day one, you start to get the feeling that you literally own the trails. It’s the latter of the aforementioned that serious sledders look for. It’s the elusive Hidden Gem and I have to say, I did find it this winter, and it’s in Northeastern Ontario. Kyle, Todd (fellow riders for OSM) and I embarked on a four day saddle bag trip that had us touring Northeastern Ontario, leaving from the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort to the Sportsman Lodge, near Sudbury, to the Country Side Motor Inn, in Noelville, to Clarion Pinewood Park in North Bay and then back to Mattawa. What follows is the account of our adventures, the people we met and the places we saw. VOL 29 • ISSUE 3

Owning The Trails In Northeastern Ontario

Where do we begin? The offices of OSM Canada are located on the southwest side of Lake Simcoe, and our destination for day one was the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort. It was an easy four hour drive for us. To get there, simply get into the area of North Bay, turn east on Hwy 17, and you will find the resort. Mike and Brenda Martel, the owners of Mattawa Golf and Ski, know exactly what snowmobilers need, and the place is completely set up for us sledders. Ample parking for truck and trailer, a licensed restaurant that serves amazing home cooked meals, and separate cabins that are comfortable and fully set up makes this a great resort. Take the time and talk to Mike the owner, because he is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the area, and he really knows his stuff. After an awesome dinner that night we retired to our cabins, had a few beverages, and called it a night.

Ride Day One Day one had our tracks spinning by 9:00am. Our destination was the Sportsman Lodge in Wahnapitae (Greater Sudbury Area) and by my calculations, it was going to be approximately 300kms; not a bad day kilometer-wise. However, after chatting the night before with a group of riders who were finishing up the week, they told us they had found some epic riding on the NB308 trail. We all checked the map, and even though it was not on the original planned route, it was highly

suggested we try this trail–Challenge Accepted. Leaving Mattawa, we took the A112A trail and gassed up in Mattawa. Traveling along the main trail, we came across some pretty cool scenic sites. Most notable was an old abandoned cave. You will know when you find it; you come around a corner and there will be a bunch of foot traffic. Look to the rock face and ‘tada - a cave”. After continuing along the A112A, we found the intersection for the 308. If you are in this area - Do This Trail!...‘nuff said.

After 308 we headed down the 300, which was as good as the 308, and lunched at the Portage Bar right at the intersection of the TOP A & D Trails. The food is amazing here. There is ample parking for truck and trailer, gas on site, and it looked like the Portage is a common place for sledders to start from. After chatting with the owner Susanne Udeschini, she explained she will let sledders park their truck and trailer for a few days – with no problem. If it is more than a few days, Susanne will charge you in the form of a restaurant meal. So basically you get free parking if, after you get back, head in for a burger and beverage at the bar. – Win/Win I think. Call Susanne and let her know you’re coming. After Lunch we did gas up at Portage, (because if you don’t know the rule when riding up in the North is “Never Pass Up Gas”) and started our afternoon ride to The Sportsman Lodge. This is a haul, but if you stay on it, you will make it to The Sportsman just after the dinner hour. There is gas along the way. Right off the D trail in River Valley is where you’ll find the gas station. The trails along the TOP D trail to Sportsman Lodge are really fast. That is why making up the kms is easy to do. The trail into Sportsman Lodge is the C206D, and clearly marked when you get there. Upon arriving at the Sportsman Lodge you are immediately welcomed with a huge-hello-and-glad-

you made-it welcome. The Sportsman has an amazing feel to it and caters to sledders in the winter. There are a few separate lodges at the complex, and ours offer us weary sledders a hot tub, comfortable rooms, and a common living area with satellite TV and a lounge area. Take the time and chat with the owner George; he is a sledder and is very well versed on the trails around this area. It was because of talking with George, over a few beverages, that he told me about a really amazing scenic ride up to Wolf Mountain lookout that would offer up some pretty cool photo opportunities for the magazine.

Ride Day Two Day two had us putting approximately 275kms on the sleds, and would take us down the D104 trail into Noelville for the second night. After a solid breakfast prepared by George, we suited up and

were on trails by 10:00am. The first order of business was to get to the scenic area called Wolf Mountain. To get there, you hook up with the trail that’s right outside the Sportsman’s driveway, and take the C206 north up to the 76 local trail. After a really cool trail that climbs up to the top, you arrive at Ontario’s third highest elevation point - Wolf Mountain. We stopped, took it all in, nabbed some amazing photos and headed back down. About half way to Noelville, you will hit a town called St. Charles, and may we suggest you stop at the Sasquatch Restaurant. If you’re man enough, order the Sasquatch burger, and try not to have a nap after lunch. The ride down to the Country Side Motor Inn from lunch is a pretty quick one, and takes you though some tighter wooded trails. When we arrived at the Country Side, we realized we’d made such good time that we decided to do a loop around Noelville after checking in and chatting with the owners,

Jean-Guy and Joanne. As it turns out, Jean-Guy is an expert sledder in the area and knows all the trails. The trail literally passes directly through his driveway, so we did the C106/D103 loop, which takes you down to the French River, and the trails are a lot of fun. Tight woods, fast straights, and some elevation changes near the river make this a great ride.

Ride Day 3 Day three had us traveling from Noelville to The Clarion Pinewood Park resort in North Bay, approximately 275km, so again not a huge day, but it was going to be a full day. The Countryside does not serve breakfast, so we decided to suit up early, and head into town to grab some gas, and breakfast. Both are easy to find, and are right off the trail. For the route to North Bay, we decided to take the C106 out of Noelville, meet up with the Top C trail south, and

take the C105D into Port Loring for lunch. Not to sound like a broken record, and not sure how many times I can tell you this, but these trails are wide and fast. You really start appreciating the hard work and effort that the local clubs and groomers put into these trails. For lunch we stopped at Roxy’s in Port Loring. A few sledders told us along our travels that this is the place to stop, and the stories were all true, with great food, cool vibe, and fun staff. When exiting Port Loring, you have a few options. The trick is to get from Roxy’s in town and make your way to the lake. Once you get

on the lake, you come to the intersection signage and then you can decide what route to take. We took the C106 to 601 into Restoule. Along this route you encounter some pretty cool vista views and some really nice wooded trails, and then we got on the D102, towards North Bay. Once we got close into North Bay, we hit Lake Nippissing, which was fully staked, and because it was getting close to the end of the day, we all decided that taking the lake was the way to go. If there are stakes, you will have absolutely no problem navigating the lake to North Bay. You are going to make up some

time here – trust us. We made our way to Pinewood Park, a Clarion Resort, and they know exactly what it takes to cater to snowmobilers. First, they have an amazing, fully licensed pub inside the resort. Second, they have a hot tub and sauna. Third, they had secure parking for our sleds, and lastly, there is gas directly across the street. As for us snowmobilers, that pretty much sums up what we need. We even discussed the fact that this would be a perfect place to bring the wife and make a weekend out of it. There is everything at the Pinewood Park.

Ride Day 4 The last day of our trip had us making our way back to truck and trailer in Mattawa. We decided to take the south route from North Bay, along the Top A trail. To get there we made our way out of North Bay on the 710, to the Top D trail south to the A101D, which will intersect directly into the Top A trail, east to Mattawa. This part was by far, some of the best riding we encountered this trip. Fast wide stretches that transition to fast sweeping trails, to nice wooded twisty stuff. Basically, everything you love about snowmobiling wrapped into approximately 250 kms back. The distance is perfect for the last day. It doesn’t make you feel like you got ripped

off, and at the same time, it is not a grueling haul that leaves you exhausted in the last stretch back to truck and trailer. At the beginning of this adventure, I mentioned that we had found the hidden gem. Northeastern Ontario is a place where a snowmobiler will find trails that are amazing and fast; where a snowmobiler will find places to stay that have all the amenities that a sledder needs, and a place where a snowmobiler will find the people they meet are genuine and accommodating. All of this wrapped up in an area that makes you feel like you are the only ones there. In the four days we rode, we only ran into a handful of other sledders, and by the end, we all agreed in the truck ride home, that we literally felt like we owned the trails.

Riding

WHITE GOLD STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT CLARK

With over 7000kms of some of the best groomed trails you will find anywhere, if you have not had the pleasure of riding in New Brunswick, then maybe the guarantee of finding White Gold will get you to put this destination on your “Bucket-Ride” List.

here is one trip that the crew at OSM always throws their name into the proverbial “hat”, in hopes that your name gets pulled. This year Mike and I won the Ride Lottery, and were picked to go and ride The White Gold in New Brunswick. Typically, New Brunswick is our last ride of the year, which is done by design, because if you don’t know, the region gets serious amounts of snow, and snowmobiling in late March and early April is very probable.

RIDING WHITE GOLD IN NEW BRUNSWICK The biggest inaccuracy we hear about riding in New Brunswick is the distance you must travel to get to the region. This year, with ample parking and direct access to the trails, our “home base" for truck and trailer would be the Quality Inn Edmundston, which is just over a ten and a half hour drive from our offices in Newmarket. In terms of snowmobile trips, we know that putting in eight hours behind the wheel is not unheard of to find really good trails, so trust us, going the extra distance to New Brunswick is well worth the extra Timmy Stop. The Quality Inn is where we would meet up with Ross Antworth, General Manager NBFSC, Sandy Young, President NBFSC and Harold McCann, lifelong friend of OSM. First, we get caught up over a couple of well deserved refreshments in the Sports Bar and Grill that’s located right in the hotel, and then discuss where our two day adventure would take us. A few, really good features about the Quality Inn

that we always like to mention to our fellow sledders is that the rooms are clean and spacious enough for two guys and all their gear. Also, there are direct

Anyone that has done a snowmobile trip knows just how important all of those features are. Day One of riding had us up early and heading northwest on the local trail out of Edmundston, to hook up with #12 north towards St. Joseph, and then continue on to #17 into the Moose Valley region. One of the most notable features you will find when riding throughout the New Brunswick region is just how good the signage is. Getting in and out of any town, or when you reach any sort of junction, there is never any guessing as to which way to go. You might think that is a small task, but once you experience the vast span of wilderness and shear kms that are available to ride in New Brunswick, it really makes you thankful that the NBFSC takes signage seriously. The ride up to Moose Valley for lunch takes you through amazing elevation changes and some pretty epic views of the landscape. The trails are fast and

smooth, so keeping an eye on your speed is something you will find yourself having to watch, and it takes a conscience effort to take in the scenery as opposed to letting it fly by. Lunch on the first day had us stopping at the Moose Valley Sporting Lodge, which is found directly on the trail. If you miss this place, it might be time to find a

new leader in the group. The proprietor of The Moose Valley is Lee Blanchette, and if you need to know anything about anywhere in this region, he is your guy. The Lodge boasts the longest snowmobile season in New Brunswick, due its natural surroundings and mountainous areas that drop an abundance of snow, and Lee and his guides will help you really explore the area. The Moose Valley Lodge is one of those places that if you stop for lunch, you’ll really wish you were stopping for dinner and the night. The lodge has a fully licensed restaurant that serves amazing home cooked meals, gas, has available guides and lodging. If you have the time, try and make The Moose Valley Lodge part of your extended trip. After lunch, with full tanks and stomachs we decided to take a new local loop to the North of Moose Valley Lodge that would take about an hour to complete, and would help digest the

10oz burger and fries that was taken down, without a crumb left on the plates (yes the food is that good at the Lodge). This trail took us into some unbelievable terrain, and after about a half hour on the trail, we got a first-hand experience as to why they call this area of New Brunswick “Moose Valley”. It took a few piles of moose droppings and some fresh tracks to find us ourselves following a rather large cow on the trail. The moose in this region are smart, and will use the sled trails as a means to get around. The snow in the bush is so deep that even the moose try to avoid it. After following the moose, and realizing that she had no

intention of moving, we stopped to give her some space. This is when Sandy explained to us that moose will literally run themselves to death if you push them too hard, and under no circumstance would we be taking my suggestion and trying to pass it. Apparently, that is not a very good idea. After the new loop, we made our way east towards Kedgwick, and then south down to Saint-Quentin, to make our way back to Edmundston. Looking at the map, and doing some quick math after lunch, we estimated that the hour loop was still close to 170kms away from the hotel. In some cases that might stress

some people, but again, I need to mention that in New Brunswick, that is still only a half-day on trail. The trails are fast and straight and making up kms is very easy to do. Pulling back into the Quality Inn around dinnertime was like pulling into your own home. The sleds park right by your door, with access from the parking lot, and you can be sitting at the restaurant within ten minutes of your arrival if you like. After a few cocktails in the room, the gang was off to dinner at the restaurant to recap and plan the next day’s adventure. For the last day of riding, we decided to explore the Westside on #39 out of

A screen shot from our Helmet-Cam describes why it is called Moose Valley. Edmundston, mostly because we were interested to see just how close Quebec and Maine, USA were to this part of the region. It had us talking about how accessible Edmundston is to both Quebec and the USA. Grab a map and have a look for yourself. We have a lot of readers that ride in Quebec and the USA, and we were talking about what a great trip it would make to head out of one of those regions into Edmundston, and do the loop we did on the first day. The main access point once you arrive into New Brunswick is Saint-Francois from Quebec, and Clair from Maine. Both have gas and food, but if you’re planning on arriving into this region from USA or Quebec, I would plan on making the run to Edmundston for the night, and making that your starting destination. That being said, and if you just want to tour and stay in New Brunswick, the run to the west will have you riding through some really amazing terrain and elevation changes. There are parts of the trail that have views that will amaze you, and will highlight just how much snow this region gets. Case in point, and I am not ashamed to admit it; at least once on this trip, one of us got stuck while doing something as basic as turning

around on trail to set up a photo shoot. You know the maneuver I am talking about; the standard three-point turn on trail. Trust me, if you try in New Brunswick to give it that little extra burp and make it a two-point turn, there is a very good chance you are going to be digging for twenty minutes, all while listening to your buddies questioning your riding ability, and taking photos of you with their smart phones. Because of the shear amount of photo opportunities we found on the second day, we decided to have a quick, sledside lunch at the local gas station in Saint-Francois, due to our timing. There is a pre-made sandwich bar and coffee station, and the day was warm enough that sitting on the sled while having lunch, made for a perfect stop. Really, we just needed to fill the tanks, because we all wanted to get back on trail. After lunch we headed a bit further west, to a great trail that would take us up to Lac Baker to check it out and open up the buggies a bit on the flat, fully staked lake. There is a restaurant at the end of the lake that was under construction, and we were told it would be open for the next season. So, if you plan on making the run down Lake

Baker, there should be a great spot to stop and have a break. After the lake run, we decided it was time to head back to the hotel, call it a day and get a good night sleep. The yearly trip to New Brunswick was unfortunately, coming to and end, and Mike and I would be heading back to Ontario the next day. After a great few days in the region, it was really apparent just how much terrain and kms of trails the region around Edmundston New Brunswick has to offer. If you are planning on heading into New Brunswick to take it all in, we would strongly suggest making the Quality Inn your home base, and spending at least 3-4 days riding because, trust us, you will not be disappointed. In fact, on the drive back to Ontario, Mike and I had already started planning how we would stack the deck in our favour, and get picked to come back next season. Riding with Ross and Sandy, you get the privilege of hearing what the plans are for the NBFSC, and we heard there are some new things happening in the region that are really big. We can’t tell you about it now, but stay tuned for future news in OSM and our travel stories, because it is going to be awesome! ith the 2014 season logging some record snowfalls throughout most of North America, and the best winter for as long as I can remember; the excitement for the 2014/15 season has started out with remarkable enthusiasm. The Toronto Snowmobile Show was proof of that just over a month ago with very high attendance, and we here at OSM love to share our passion with all of you diehard sledders, with every issue we publish. We try and bring to you some interesting destinations that we have had the luxury of traveling to and riding. The trail atlas edition is one that can be found in most rider’s gear bags and sled trunks, and we try and do our best to list most of the Ontario and New Brunswick trails, and share our experiences with you for some fabulous riding and hotel destinations to check off your list.

We also venture well into Quebec several times a winter, and bring back some stellar riding experiences and excellent hotel stays, every time we go. While we try to highlight our adventure and bring it to print, along with photos, it can be somewhat challenging to bring to you the thrill of the experience without you actually squeezing the throttle yourself on the ride. As you know, photos sometimes don’t do justice to the actual experience, but we try to convey the ride to you as realistically as we can. Having Quebec’s eastern regions on my calendar every season, I have had the pleasure of riding the entire Gaspé Peninsula and her interior, and I was looking forward to riding the south shore of the St. Lawrence River in Bas SaintLaurent, and crossing to the north shore via Ice Breaker ferry to explore and experience what I have only heard of. BAS-SAINT LAURENT, GASPÉSIE AND CÔTE- NORD TOUR To return to this sledder’s utopia for our 4th season, it only took a couple of emails with our Quebec Maritime Tourism Representative Camilie Beaulieu, and she set us up with a tour ride of a lifetime. The Qc Maritimes does boast 6,000 kms of groomed trails in total, and provides some of the most scenic views anywhere in the country. Those who do visit, usually visit again, and it’s stocked with ample hotels, plenty of fuel stops and routes for everyone’s riding preference …..This place is a Must Ride! Now with dates set, Itinerary in hand and truck and sleds loaded, we were off for six days - two days of travel and four days of riding. As any sledder knows, when you actually have the truck and trailer loaded and are heading off with your buds who share the same passion, there isn’t anything better to get your blood pumping than heading on tour to play in the snow. We want to thank our friends at Bennett Power Sports in Whitby for the use of their trailer on this tour, as we had a double booking on ours. www.bennettpowersports.com On tour with me this year is Quebec rookie Wayne (Wobblie) Evans and veterans Andrew Steele and Jamie Colvin. With just a little over nine hours to travel, heading east to Riviere-du-Loup from our home base, the weather was cooperating for once and our destination at Hôtel Universel was our first and last night’s stay on this tour, and home for the truck and trailer for the week. Heading East on Trail 5 to Matane fenced in compound for your sleds and truck and trailer, this makes the perfect home base when starting off and ending your tour in Bas-Saint Laurent. All while having freshly renovated rooms in the Spa Wing; they are comfy and tasteful and will meet anyone’s standards. Once we arrived, we had a great meal with our tourism host Camilie in one of the Hotel’s two restaurants, and we shared a few laughs over our below average French speaking capabilities and the week we were about to experience. Morning came early and before we knew it, the sleds were warming up and we were heading east on trail #5 for a 350 km ride to

our first overnight stay on the trail in Matane at Riôtel Matane in the Gaspésie Region. www.quebecmaritime.ca/riotelmatane I stayed here in 2013, and this Hotel is only a hundred feet from the St. Lawrence shoreline. It offers beautiful rooms and a perfect lounge to relax in after a long day’s ride. Riding along trail 5 from Riviere-duLoup east, there are several off trails that break away from trail 5 and return back that venture you to many scenic views, such as the ice bridge to the oldest lighthouse on the St. Lawrence via trail 567, and several beautiful views overlooking the St. Lawrence coastline.

Matane is the only south side starting point that the ice breaker ferry “CamilleMarcoux” can be boarded from, to head to the north shore of Godbout or BaieComeau (check the ferry schedule). I strongly suggest that when riding into Matane from the west, that you locate the wharf where the ferry is docked, if you plan on catching her the next morning. The Ferry departs at 8:00 am and registration tickets have to be completed by 7:00 am., which means an early morning start if you have any distance to ride in

the am. We stayed at the east end of town for the night and had to ride 20 minutes by trail to the wharf in the morning. We located the ferry the night before, just for an accurate take off time in the am, and we were glad we did. Now boarded on the ferry amongst cars, pickups and full size transports, we headed up to the main level where the on-board amenities include a cafeteria, bar, videos and a lounge to relax in for your 2 hour and 20 minute tour to the north shore.

BAS-SAINT LAURENT, GASPÉSIE AND CÔTE- NORD TOUR We were headed to Godbout on the north shore to catch trail 3 and head westerly to Baie-Comeau. After you dock on the north shore and the front bow of the ferry opens up, the crew are very quick to help you exit to get you on your way. The ferry “Ice Breaker” carries 125 vehicles and 600 passengers, so expecting a half hour departure is normal. They will load sleds last and unload you close to first, so wait time to depart is minimal for sledders. Note: Be sure to have a full fuel tank before you board. Once we were off the Ferry we were headed west on one of the most scenic trails you could want to find, groomed to near perfection, and the views of the St. Lawrence that make you take a second look. This north shore trail 3 west to BaieComeau, was only 86km, and it was mint. Huge elevation changes and smooth corners made this early start to our day all worthwhile, and made you really want to ride your buggy. After a few hours riding and only minutes out of town, we made our way down out of the hills into Baie-Comeau, to our overnight stay at Hôtel Le Manoir. This hotel is situated on the shore of the St. Lawrence looking easterly, and was nothing we expected. Founded and originally constructed in 1937, this was an exotic getaway for several wealthy Chicago businessmen in its early days. This Hotel has seen many changes since it originated, but still has a historic feel. It saw a full re-build in 1965, after a fire burned it to the ground, and was refurbished again in 2004. This Manoir breathes culture and offers fine dining and a truly memorable, luxurious stay.

www.quebecmaritime.ca/manoirbcomeau After a tour of the Hotel by our host, we put on our patriotic hats and relaxed in the lounge while we cheered on our Canadian women in the woman’s gold medal game against the Americans… and we all know how that game ended up. Now, fully relaxed and full of historic knowledge, it was time to re-pack our sled bags to get ready for our departure tour in the morning back to Godbout. Waking to some -20 temps and a sky full of sunshine, our double back ride to the ferry was as equally breathtaking. The remote feeling that you actually experienced in this part of Quebec made

you enjoy it even more. Arriving back on the south shore in Matane after our 2hr and 20 minute ferry ride, we were back in the saddles and heading west to Rimouski to Hôtel Rimouski, where we would stay for the third night of our ride. This Hotel would be one of the most popular amongst sled travelers to the Gaspé Peninsula, offering gated storage for your vehicles while you are riding the Peninsula, and full comfort rooms for your first and last night’s sleep of your trip. www.quebecmaritime.ca/hotelrimouski Our last day’s ride via trail 5 from Rimouski to Riviere-du-Loup and back to our starting point of this tour at Hôtel

EXPLORING THE BRUCE OSMExplores District 9 Grey Bruce County during Wiarton Willie Festival. STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT CLARK nyone that is serious about snowmobiling knows how important a long winter is. After coming off a few short winters in previous years, OSM decided to load up the sleds for a three day trip in Grey Bruce County during the Wiarton Willie Festival, (Groundhog Day) to explore the trails and more importantly, to see if we could persuade “Wee Wiarton Willie” to predict a “Long Winter.” After spending three days on amazing trails, taking in epic escarpment views and meeting amazing people, trust us when we say; this is one trip you should do! Also, as we all remember, 2014 turned out to be one of the best winters in over a decade, and we would like to think our chat with the groundhog had everything to do with it.

EXPLORING THE BRUCE

Located in Southern Ontario and boasting over 3000kms of groomed trails, Grey Bruce County is a hidden gem in Ontario. The Bruce, as it is referred to is bordered by Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and because of its

location, this region gets crazy weather patterns and serious snowfall (and we have the story to prove it). This trip saw me and Ian Penny, (fellow OSM contributing writer) loading up our truck and trailer on a Thursday night, after a

day in the office, to start the journey to the region. Our first destination for the trip was the famous Falls Inn in Walter Falls, located only a couple of hours from our shop in Newmarket. Even though the snow had just started to fall in the Toronto area, we were getting reports that the region we were heading into was getting blasted with snow. Being the professional wheelmen that we are, and putting in a ton of kms of really bad winter driving every year, we did not put much into the warning and pushed on through. By the time we got to Collingwood on Hwy 26, we started to receive calls from Lisa Grieg, our friend at Bruce County Tourism that it was time to stop for the evening, because they were closing the roads down in the region. We were skeptical because we’ve dealt with many a bad road in our time, but we reluctantly took the warning and stopped in at the Days Inn in Collingwood, grabbed dinner at the local Boston Pizza, and awaited further instructions in the morning. The next morning, local reports had the highways opening up at 10:00am, and after a quick breakfast we were rolling again to Walter Falls. When we arrived at the junction for the highway that they apparently had to “close down”, we were greeted by a friendly, local police officer that was in the process of removing the barricades. With a friendly wave and a mumble under our breath that there was no reason to close the road down, we continued forward. It took about 1 km down the road to realize exactly what happened the night before. Even though the highway had been

Yup there is a lot of snow in the region.

EXPLORING THE BRUCE

The famous Falls Inn & Spa in Walter Falls. Bring the wife to this one! cleared during the night, the carnage of snow could still be seen, with the 15 feet of snow-banks left behind by the heavy machinery needed to get the highway opened. We were shocked at the amount of snow that had fallen. Why did we tell you this long-winded story? It was because we want to stress that when it snows here, it snows a lot! The lake effect and openness of the region dumps more snow here than any other region in Southern Ontario, and as an avid snowmobiler, we thought you would like to know that. Day one of riding had us unloading at The Falls Inn in Walter Falls. This amazing place is located directly overlooking Walter Falls, and definitely caters to snowmobilers in the wintertime. With a large access parking lot for truck

Really nice wooded trails and trailer and the local snowmobile trail running right through the property, making this a starting point is a perfect decision. The rooms are very comfortable the staff are really friendly. This would be a perfect place to bring the lady snowmobiler in your life. You will get big points for finding this place. We unloaded our sleds, checked in, geared up and joined up with Kevin Mattleson and Wayne Benedict from the Eastside Snowmobile Club in the parking lot. Kevin and Wayne would join us today to show us around and make sure that we don’t miss any of the numerous photo ops that are abundant in this region. Departing The Falls Inn we headed north on the local trail (that literally runs past The Falls Inn parking lot) and hooked up with the main B Trail that gets you around the region. The first

thing you realize when you are riding this region is the amount of snow it gets. Yes, we know that winter 2014 had great snow conditions. However, it is pretty obvious that there is more snow here than in other regions of Southern Ontario, and because of that, as you ride the trails, you also notice how accommodating the area is to snowmobilers. For example, our first stop in Owen Sound for gas showed us how easy and well signed this region is for getting in and out of the towns. We have ridden in other areas where there is a lot of guessing as to which way to go when you hit the town. Even the Boston Pizza is a local partner for the club, and welcomes snowmobilers by the hundreds on any given weekend. After Owen Sound, we head out and make our way towards the Club House on B trail. Along

this route there are a few amazing photo ops that should not be missed. The clubs do a great job marking them, and trust me, you won’t miss them. The trails are wide and fast, and take you through all types of terrain, from tight wooded to fast, wide open fields. One thing we did appreciate was how well the clubs mark and maintain the open fields. With the amount of snow this region gets, without those markers you would be guessing where to go when you hit the fields. After checking out the views, we made our way for lunch at the Sweet Water Restaurant at Cobble Beach Golf Resort. Yup, you read that right – Golf Resort. I know what you are thinking; golf resorts don’t typically cater to sledders, and most of the time, we’re actually not welcome. Well, in the case of Cobble Beach, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. The trail leads directly into the front door of the resort, and signage is pretty good. Remember, this is a fairly new destination on the trail system, so you will have to pay attention and take your time to get into it. The second day of riding had us leaving from the Spirit Rock Motel, which we moved our truck and trailer to because of its location to downtown Wiarton, so we were closer for the Big Prediction the next day. The Spirit Rock owners Bob and Rose-Anne Bell are two of the best people we have met out on the road. The motel is a stone’s throw to the main trail B107 that takes you up the west side of the peninsula, and with plenty of room for truck and trailer, if you are considering riding the Bruce and exploring the peninsula, then you should seriously consider the Sprit Rock as home base. We headed out north up the B107 to take in the trails on the Peninsula. The trails are a mix of wooded trails and open field crossings. You can make up the distance on these trails, as they are fast and very well marked. We made it to Lions Head for lunch and met up with a few locals with whom we started to discuss our afternoon trail ride, and to see if we should head up a little more north on the Peninsula. It turned out, (and this is why you always talk to locals) that the authorities had closed the Peninsula due to the weather and that no one was getting in or out. It was amazing to hear and see first hand, the amount of snow this region gets. The problem would not be getting the sleds up the Peninsula, the problem would be all the gas stations that were out of fuel because the trucks could not make it. There is a trail that runs right up the Peninsula to Tobermory, and after having a rather animated discussion with the locals at the Lion Head Pub, we got conflicting stories as to whether the trip up and back can be done in a day. Some say yes, others say no. We are going to lean towards the Yes side of the debate, and we will be trying this in another upcoming trip. After lunch we headed back down the east side of the Peninsula on B108, and again found some really great photo opportunities. One really cool factoid is that on the way down, you pass the sign for the 45th parallel, which makes you realize that you are exactly half way from the equator to the North Pole. Certainly a good reason to stop and grab a photo for your album. The trip up to Lions Head and back down to Spirit Rock will only take you half a day of riding, and we were back to the Motel around dinner time. The town of Wiarton is a buzz when it comes to Groundhog Day. We headed to the Green Door Café for dinner, which has amazing local cuisine, and live entertainment on the weekend. Call ahead

These are the views you will find.

for a table, as they are limited and it’s a really popular destination for dinner. Being ones not to turn in too early, we inquired with the waitress as to where we should go for a few après dinner beverages, and was immediately told The Pacific Inn hosts the party before the Big Prediction. Located in town, it was certainly the place to party. Not sure you would want to take your wife and make it an overnight destination, if you know what I mean, but if you want to know where everyone hangs out and celebrates the night before Willies Prediction, we found it-and you’re welcome. The last day had us up early to head to the Bluewater Park for Willie’s Prediction. This is a huge festival with a ton of events and different activities set out for the whole family. There is a huge build up to Willie and whether or not he is going to see his shadow. As the Town Crier officially announced “Long Winter”, we at OSM broke out in a huge cheer, and then realized we were the only ones highfiving in the crowd…After we spent some time meeting the gang at the Willie

Festival, we headed back to the Motel to meet up with Sandra Wilson, Paul Wright and Darryl McCartney from the Wiarton Trail Blazers to get our last day of riding in. This day would find us touring the southern part of the Peninsula and took us to some pretty amazing views and more photo ops of the escarpment. After touring some really great local trails, we stopped for a lunch at the Sauble Dunes Bar & Grill, a really great spot for food, right off the trail. The afternoon had us touring around a few more local trails and making our way back to the truck and trailer at the Spirit Rock to start our drive back to the Toronto Area. The great thing about this part of the region is the amount of different trail options you have. So, if it is your last day of riding, you can chose exactly how long you are going to be out on the trails. After spending three days in the region, some of the takeaways you should know about Exploring The Bruce, as a snowmobiler, is that if there is snow in Southern Ontario, there is going to be a lot more snow in Grey/Bruce County. The

lake effects definitely help with that, and with over 3000kms of trails and really great scenery, located under two hours from Toronto, it really is a great playground for a snowmobiler. Also keep in mind that because of the lack of lakes, swamps and bogs, usually District 9 can open the trails earlier than that of the other regions in Ontario because they are not reliant on frozen water to get sledding. Top it all off with a huge festival that celebrates the time-honored tradition of predicting what all snowmobiles care about, and you have got yourself a perfect getaway for the avid snowmobiler. OSM will certainly be heading back to the region in the very near future and we hope to see you out on the trails in District 9. Quebec’s Great White North

EEYOU ISTCHEE BAIE-JAMES 4 Regions in 4 days. STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT CLARK

here is an area of Quebec that is quickly becoming the new hidden gem for serious sledders that want to put on “Big Miles”, with truly a remote feeling of owning the trails. Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is an area north of the 49th parallel that has started to make its mark in the snowmobile community, with over 1,100kms of maintained trails, and an abundance snow that seems to last forever. This region boasts the longest snowmobile season of any region, with trails opening up in December and staying maintained well into April, and last winter, we at OSM had the pleasure of checking out firsthand what all the discussion was about. OSM headed into the region to put down over 1,600km that would have us starting in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, heading north to Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, back down through Abitibi-Témiscamingue and finishing up through the Region of Mauricie.

QUEBEC'S GREAT WHITE NORTH • EEYOU ISTCHEE BAIE-JAMES cater to snowmobilers. There is ample parking for your truck and trailer, and they even erect a 100 ft. covered tent with walls, so your buggie will stay nice and dry overnight. The hotel itself is a modern, clean hotel with comfortable rooms, an indoor pool/spa, a fully licensed bar/restaurant and great staff. There are places you visit when you are out on the road that you give you the feeling that they are happy to have snowmobilers, and this is one of those places. After arriving, we would meet up with Anne, unload her snowmobile, and over a few beverages, discuss the plan for the next four days.

DAY ONE Roberval to Chibougamau

When we got the call from Anne Nguyen from the tourism office of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, telling us that she wanted to invite us to join her for a fourday loop through the northern part of Quebec, she hadn’t even finished the sentence when we answered with a resounding YES! It wasn’t until she also mentioned that there may be a very good possibility that there would be a helicopter ride included that we knew things just got serious. The problem was picking from every possible rider at OSM who would make the short list of four. After several arguments and maybe a tussle or two, it was decided that me, Darren (Desi) Desautels, Steve (Fluffy) Hannah and Bruce (Brucie) Roulston would make up the ride team. Our sleds of choice for this adventure would see us loading our 2014 Viper X-TX, Ski-Doo 58

MXZ X-RS, Polaris Switchback and Indy into the trailer, and after a few discussions on the best route to take, we were off to start our 10 hour drive (from Toronto area) to Roberval QC. To start with, the drive to Roberval is not that bad. The best route, if you are coming from Toronto, is to make your way through Montreal and stay on the 40 to Trois-Rivières. Hook north on the 155 out of The Three Rivers, and your next stop is Roberval. If possible, try to make at least a part of this drive up north in the daylight, because the highway snakes for over 100kms along the water, and is some of the coolest driving scenery you will experience in this area. We arrived at the Hôtel Château Roberval, which would be home base for truck and trailer for the trip. Upon arriving, we immediately noticed how much they

After a good night sleep, we would meet up for breakfast with Anne and a few local guides, who would be joining us for half the day. When we’re in a new area, we really enjoy spending some riding time with the local club members. Just like any region, they know stuff that you would probably miss, and are a wealth of information that is great to listen to. We set out from Roberval on a local trail to meet up with the 93 trail, which is the “main highway” that we would be riding on over the next few days. This is a really good time to describe the trails in this region. First of all, to say that these trails are wide-open and fast is an understatement, and doesn’t do them justice. There was times on the 93 that you get the feeling that you’re on your favourite sweeping, curvy road on a street bike, and the trails are set up to allow you to squeeze that throttle and go as fast as you want to. Hopefully, that paints a picture of just how amazing these trials are. Also, the shear amount of area that encompasses this region makes it feel like these are your own private trails and they were groomed just for you. We discussed at lunch how weird it is that when you are out on the trails, it is very rare to run into another group of sledders. However, when you enter into the towns and gas stations, they are filled with snowmobiles. “Where do all these people come from?” was asked a lot. The trails spread the groups out, and you never get the impression that you’re riding on top of another group. Anyone who has ridden on a Saturday in Muskoka, Ontario, knows exactly what we are referring to. After a lunch stop in La Dore, we were back on the 93, making tracks north of the 49th Parallel into Chibougamau. A good portion of this trail makes its way through the Ashuapmushauan Wildlife

The covered snowmobile parking at the Hotel Chateau Roberval is a really nice touch.

place to stay when you get here. It is set up for sledders, and even has a compound for sled parking that gets locked overnight. That is a warm blanket for anyone who has spent time on overnight sled trips. It actually makes this guy sleep a little deeper. The rooms are average and comfortable, with enough room for two guys and gear to share a room, and a quick walk across the street gets you to the Pub Royal which has amazing food, cold, local beers and a really talented wait staff. The scene at the pub this night was all about the big cross-country race the next day, and this was why we were here this weekend.

DAY TWO Chibougamau to Lebel-surQuévillon Reserve, which covers an area over 4,400 square kilometers, and was originally used by the Montagnais as a means of building a thriving fur trade between the native peoples of the north and whites from the south. Ashuapmushauan is native for “where the moose are seen”, and today is a resource-rich territory that still retains its unique character from the past, and offers up some amazing views when you’re there. One mention; when you are in this area, you have to remember that it is remote. The gas station only takes cash, and is in a parking lot of a mining or logging camp. When riding up in this region, it’s very important to have at least $300.00 in cash in your pocket, because some places don’t even consider taking a

credit card. After gassing up, we started our final journey that would see us putting on another 150kms to the next overnight destination, which was Hotel Chibougamau. This is the time when being a prepared snowmobiler becomes a necessity. In this part of the province when the sun goes down, the mercury takes a serious plunge into “Holy-CrapVille”, and having the right gear is not only a good idea, but also a matter of whether you are going to be able to ride the next day. We can’t stress enough that you are way up north, and it’s way different up here. The buddy system to check any exposed skin is a cardinal rule up here; so now you get the point - it is cold! The Hotel Chibougamau is the

The Festival Folifrets Baie James is an annual winter festival that takes over this area in late February, and tops off with a 325km single trail, cross-country snowmobile race that gets huge support from the local community. Anne told us that they would be sending two OSM staff members up in a helicopter to cover the race, and have two other members stay “terraferma” to cover the start and mid-way point during the race. Yours truly with the big camera was elected to be the first member, and Desi with the GoPro was the second member of OSM to accompany the pilot for a bird’s-eye view of the race. After a brief training session and safety checklist, we were flying through the air, just a few feet off the top of the trees, literally following the lead

Huge crowd support for the Chibougamau cross-country snowmobile race. Everyone waves hello. racers. We could tell our pilot was having fun, because he was getting this helicopter to do things I did not know possible. Sweeping bank turns and nose first, throttle boosts were just a few tricks he had in his arsenal. In the air you really got to notice just how much the community loved this race, with the entire roadside littered with cars and trucks to catch a glimpse of the leader. Needless to say, this helicopter ride would go down as a highlight of my snowmobiling career. We have been asked to go back next year for the 50th anniversary of the event, and I can guarantee that this guy will be there. After covering the race, we had to get the tracks spinning because we had some serious km’s to cover, and we had just spent half the day covering the race.

Heading back out the main trail from Chibougamau, we hooked up with the 93 West towards Lebel-sur-Quévillon . Lunch would have us stopping at the local snowmobile clubhouse in Chapais for an amazing home cooked meal. During this trip, you really notice how important these clubhouses are to the region. They are completely set up with lounges and dinning areas, and it is very apparent how much pride goes into maintaining them. After lunch, the trails were really buttery fast, and with a few lake crossings, you can squeeze the throttle a little harder and make up some time to the next destination. On this part of loop, you will be gassing up in Waswanipi, and be prepared to pay top dollar for the fuel. The one thing I stress again about this region is that you are in

a remote part of the province, and without the local gas stations, sledding would not be possible. That being said, everything needs to be hauled in, including gas, and that cost gets reflected at the pump, and it doesn’t help that they are the only spot along this trail to get gas. It is what it is, and we tell you this only so you are prepared. This day would end with us arriving into Lebel-surQuévillion a little after dark and staying at the Motel Du Lac. The motel is great, and is directly on the trail. You can’t miss it. The sleds are parked right in front of your door, and after a few beverages we picked up at the local gas station, we called a cab and took a very short drive to the local restaurant for some really good, local cuisine. At the time of writing this, we were informed that this would be

their last season, and they would be moving the restaurant, but there are several options for food in the town, and cabs are easy to get.

DAY THREE: Lebel-sur-Quévillon to Parent The next day had us up early and when the sun came up, we realized that the Motel we stayed at in Lebel-sur-Quévillon was actually situated directly on a lake, and the view was unbelievable. The mercury had dropped again overnight, and after some coaxing to get the Polaris running, we were heading back out on the

93 and we would immediately enter the Abitibi-Temiscamingue Region. This morning ride along the 93 will go down as some of the best moments I have had in my snowmobiling career. The sun was bright, the trails were groomed fast and hard, and the landscape was epic. This part of the trail winds its way through really fast wooded trails, and being in Abitibi, you know you can count on the signage to be top-notch. After gassing up in Senneterre, we started our loop back east towards Lac-Saint-Jean on the 83EST, through the region of Mauricie. After entering into the region there is about an hour of some crazy, wide-open, burned-out landscape that we would later find out was caused by a huge forest fire that ripped through the region. The shear size of the devastation is not hard to miss

because the burned out trees stay with you for at least an hour, and you feel like you are riding in a war zone. The overall feeling of pure devastation actually starts to creep into your helmet, and I don’t think I was ever happier to find a tightly wooded trail again, than I was at the end of that fire torn landscape. Once we got back into the woods, it was just ten minutes until we came upon Le Balbuzard Sauvage, an outfitter tucked way back into the bush. The Balbuzard is an absolutely amazing place. Once you enter, you are greeted by some amazing staff, and a huge rock fireplace, surrounded by huge leather couches. This is one of those places that when you stop for lunch, you wish you were stopping for the night. The chef created a lunch of sandwiches and soup, and we

QUEBEC'S GREAT WHITE NORTH • EEYOU ISTCHEE BAIE-JAMES got chatting with the owner who explained just how close they were to the fire, and it was a miracle that it didn’t burn this place to the ground. The Balbuzard also has guides that will take you to the backcountry for some boon docking and off trail adventures if you choose. I can’t stress enough that if you are heading into this region, you need to stay here, period. If you are just stopping for lunch like we did, you will need to gas up here. Again, remember everything needs to be hauled into these outfitters, so you are going to pay top dollar (almost double) for gas, so just be prepared. After literally dragging my screaming ass off the leather couch, we were back on trail and heading toward our last night of the trip in Parent. The trails get a little tighter and the signage is not as good in the Mauricie region, so you have to pay attention to where you are going, and take those blind corners a little more carefully. We arrived into Parent just after dark, and our destination for the night was a local cabin for rent called L’Ombre du Vent, and was truly a unique experience. The cabin is set back in the woods and at first, is a little tricky to find. However, when you get there, you are glad you took the time. Parent only has a few options for places to stay, and this place is perfect for sledders. You have to remember, you are renting the whole cabin, so there is lots of room. However, there is no restaurant or bar at the place.

Clubhouses are a big part of the region. What we did was stop at the local SAQ (Quebec’s “Beverage” Store) for some after-riding drinks, and then there is a menu that was in the cabin to a local eatery that will deliver really good food, directly to your door. (Another trick is that if asked very nicely, the driver will also stop and grab you a bottle of wine at the SAQ and add it to your dinner bill). If you want to unload and get back on the sled, you can head back into Parent for dinner. It’s only ten minutes from the cabin, and there are a few restaurants in town. The L’Ombre du Vent is one of those “great finds”, and it looks way better than the motel in town. The beds

leave a little to be desired, but remember, you are not at a Hilton. You are in a cabin in the middle of Quebec, and trust us, with the wine and 300km of riding, falling asleep will not be a problem.

DAY FOUR Parent back to Roberval. The final day had us leaving the cabin and heading back into Parent to a local greasy-spoon for some eggs and toast, ($4.99 special BTW) and our tracks

spinning by 8:00am. For the final pull back to the truck and trailer in Roberval, we would highly suggest you get an early start on this day. You have 350+km day ahead of you, so if you, like us, like to get back at a decent time to enjoy the indoor pool, hot tub and sauna waiting for you at the Hotel Roberval, then don’t get rolling at 10:00am. The trails through Mauricie are a mixture of fast wide and tight wooded trails, so this is a full day pull, but again can be done. We stopped for lunch and gas at the famous Relais 22 miles where the three main trail systems converge at the restaurant and gas station. Anyone who has spent any time in this region has stopped at the Relais 22, and hopefully, would have

met the famous lady bartender who loves to dish out the barbs to the sledders passing through. She is a blast. The final ride from Relais 22 to Roberval takes you through some amazing elevation changes, and every type of trail you love to ride. It is also the perfect distance to work off the 12oz burger and Poutine you just ate for lunch. We arrived back in Roberval just as the sun was starting to drop, and after putting down over 1600km in four days, we all had to admit that it was sad that it was over, but we were glad we all made it relatively unscathed and free from frostbite. We loaded our sleds back into the trailer, said good-bye to Anne who

was courageous enough to put up with us guys for four days, (and can ride the hell out of sled) and headed into the hotel to enjoy the amenities. We would take this night to recap the stories we have from the trails, and start to plot our return again. A huge thanks to all the individuals from Saguenay-Lac-SaintJean, Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, Abitibi-Temiscamingue and Mauricie who all worked to put this loop together, and we cannot wait to come back in 2016 for the 50th anniversary of the Cross-Country race in Chibougamau. Bucket List

We at OSM talk a lot about snowmobiling. It pretty much dominates any conversation we have whether we are on the trails, in the shop, or sitting in the bar it is what we talk about. One of the conversations we recently had was the preverbal “bucket-list” of activities that surround the sport of snowmobiling in Canada. So we made some notes, and to follow is our Take 5 version on Canadian Trail Ride Destinations, that we think should be completed at least once in your snowmobile career. We would love to hear your Bucket List. Shoot us an email at editor@osmmag.com.

Nomad

buyer's guide

A nomad (Greek: νομάς, nomas, plural νομάδες, nomads); meaning one roaming about; as a member of a community of people who move from one place to another.

TORQUE X HELMET They’re making sleds, crossovers why can’t helmets do the same? Sometimes you want the protection of a full face, but still like the look of a motocross style helmet. Well let us introduce you to the Torque X from FXR. Constructed with a lightweight thermoplastic shell this noodle protector features a dual layer anti-fog shield that is completely removable. Leave it on and the visor is a hi-flow, anti-scratch and UV filtering snow shield. The liner is also removable and washable and the Torque X includes a free breath box. Check out the slick colors and styles that FXR is known for at: www.fxrracing.com

That pretty much sums up what we as avid snowmobilers do during the months of December through March. We load our trucks, trailers and saddlebags and make our way to anywhere that the snow fly’s. To complete this act of being a Nomad, there are certain things that are needed over and above your regular sled gear, and anyone who’s put on serious miles, we salute you, and welcome you into our tribe! Here is a list of a few products we feel will help you in your adventures this season.

MOBILE WARMING GEAR Pretty sure the name says it all on this one; it’s gear that has Mobile Warming on board. Need we say more? Now that we have gotten your attention a few things you need to know is that the gear is available in either a jacket or vest version. If you are going with the jacket it’s a soft-shell so it would take the place of a mid layer you would have in your snowmobile jacket so all you would need is a shell. Mobile warming has three heated panels; two strategically placed on the front and one on the back. Each piece includes a rechargeable battery with a built-in four level heat control. At maximum heat the jacket reaches a surface temperature of 135 with 2.5 of warming time and at the lowest setting the warming time will increase to 10 hours. There are available accessories you can buy separately like a dual battery to double the warming time, and a 12v charger. Not a bad idea seeing how touring sleds are now coming with 12v built in. For complete information check out your local Gamma dealer: www.gammasales.com

TOWTECTOR

Are you a sledder that puts distance on with a truck and trailer? If so, you should have a look at the Towtector from Rugged Gear. By simple design this product spans the width of your truck and offers way more protection to the things you cherish most following behind you. Mud flaps are only designed to protect your truck, and whether you tow open bed or enclosed who doesn’t want to stop rocks and road debris from smashing into your sled or trailer. The Towtector mounts directly to the 2.25” hitch bar and requires a min of 1.5” extra space on the bar from the receiver to the ball. Towtector recommends a 10.25 hitch bar. The Towtector comes in three different widths and a multitude of Brush Lengths to fit any size truck regardless of the height of the truck. For complete information check out: www.towtector.com

BOLT KEY LOCK SYSTEM We at OSM don’t like to point fingers, but there are certain individuals among the team that are banned from having any contact with keys for our trucks, sleds, ATV’s and/or pad locks. (If handed keys it takes these individuals about 23.7 seconds to lose them). It is for this reason; we got so excited over this new product from Strattec called Break-through One-Key Lock Technology, better known as BOLT. If you haven’t heard of this piece of engineering brilliance, the BOLT Key Lock system actually “learns” your truck/car key as the master key to open the locks. Available in pad locks, tongue locks, receiver locks and cable locks. To use, simply insert your truck key for the first time and turn it once. That key will now open the BOLT system lock…. We are pretty sure we just heard you mutter “Oh I need that…” For full details and OEM keys that work head over to www.boltlock.com

VIRUS COMPRESSION BASE LAYER Guys you have heard us say time and time again; keeping warm is all about layering. Virus Action Sport clothing has taken the base layer to the next level by adding a compression aspect that actually helps reduce fatigue when you are riding. A “Biomechanical” XForm design that is constructed with a thin 0.3 piece of NeoSkin reinforces posterior muscles and gives lower back to over shoulder cross stretch support with an inner fabric lining forcomfort. Not to stop there, the material is enhanced with a Coffee Charcoalfabric that has been engineered for staying warm, dry and comfortable. Thisperformance fabric actually acts as a natural heating element with ultra moisture wicking design that also aids in keeping you dry. Virus was nice enough to send over a set, so we will let you know first hand this winter how it performs – Stay Tuned. For more information and styles available head check out www.virusintl.com or the Canadian Distributor: nwww.takedowndistribution.ca

CRANK POWER SUPPLY Nothing ruins a day faster than a dead battery. Whether in your truck after a three-day saddle bag ride, or a dead battery in the buggy because you left the key on; you know who you are! The Crank Power Supply available from Royal Distributing is going to be a day changer. Small enough to be carried in a saddlebag, and powerful enough to start a truck battery, this system packs the power to start it all. OK maybe not a Cummings Diesel after 3 days in -40 but you get the idea. The Crank will also charge any electronics you might be carrying, and it features every imaginable charging tip you could need. The convenient carrying case comes packed with everything shown here. Just imagine the hero points you’d be awarded if you pulled this bad boy out to assist that pretty lady stranded in the parking lot due to a dead battery. Available at: www.royaldistributing.com

CONTOUR ROAM3 CAMERA The newest addition to the Contour POV camera line has arrived. The ROAM3 is an easy-to-use action camera that was developed specifically for year-round riders. What makes the ROAM3 standout over other POV action cameras is the fact the aluminum housing that comes stock out of the box is waterproof (up to 30 feet), shock resistant and freeze resistant. That means you can mount this bad boy in all extreme conditions without the need for a bulky case. Contour also focuses on the ease-of-use aspect with a simple large slider button to start recording instantly and, new on the ROAM3, is the ability to instantly take still photos by pressing the status button. The camera comes complete with a fully charged lithium-ion battery, 8-gigabyte memory card and two lowprofile mounts. OSM got their hands on of these, so stay-tuned for further details and what we thought of them. For more information check out: www.ca.contour.com

BACKSHIFT PRO JACKET

buyer's guide

If long distance riding is your thing, it is a nice to own a jacket that can do the job of several separate jackets. The Backshift from FXR features a durable heavy nylon shell with HydrXpro laminte that is both breathable and waterproof, as well as, a removable insulated Pro Liner with Therma Flex insulation. For those days out on the trail that start at a minus ‘holy crap’! With this jacket you can begin the day with the liner zipped into the shell and all vents closed and you got yourself an insanely warm jacket. Then as the day goes on, sun comes out and you start to heat up, you can unzip up the multiple side and front vents, and if that doesn’t do it, zip out the liner stuff and it in your saddle bag. Now you have a lightly insulated jacket that will let the moisture out but keep the wind from penetrating to your mid layer, until the sun goes away again and the ‘freeze’ starts to set in again. Anyone who has put long days out on the trail knows exactly what we are talking about. Check out all the colors for this season at: www.fxrracing.com

TRANSITION PANT Anyone who has gone on multi-night saddlebag journey knows just how annoying carrying jeans is for the “après-ride shenanigans.” You know exactly what we are talking about. The Transition Pant from Klim has done to the long distance sledder what Lulu Lemon did to the yoga industry; they made it acceptable to wear out to the bar. Yup, that just happened, we just compared sled gear to yoga gear but we believe the point was made. The pant itself is Klim quality, so it is obviously developed for whatever you are going to find out on the trail. However, post-ride, you shed the shell of your sled pants, throw on a sweet button down, and boom you are off to the bar. No more thawing out your rock hard jeans with the hotel hair dryer. www.klim.com

BITEHARDER STUD SHARPENER If we need to explain to you the benefits of sharp studs then we would ask you stop reading and move onto the next product. From the makers of the BiteHarder carbide sharpener, we have featured several times in OSM, comes the Pro Series Stud Sharpener. This tool is the newest item in BiteHarder lineup and is designed to sharpen your studs without the need from removing them from your track. The tool uses the same proven diamond coating found on the carbide tool, and was developed to operate with tools that turn at a min of 10,000 RPM. So guys, your cordless drill will not cut it – you are going to need to a pneumatic style grinder. The stud sharpener is going to give you 750 or more sharpening’s per tool and is going to put a tip on your studs that is seriously sharp. For complete info check out: www.biteharder.com 70

GHOST GUARDS At OSM when we embark on a long haul saddlebag trip, one of the first things we mount to our buggies is hand guards. Why? Because they work – it is that simple. New from our friends at Rox Speed FX is the Ghost Guards. Developed with the same level of protection as their amazing Flex-Tec lineup, the Ghost guards also include a rigid yet flexible backbone that will twist and flex and the guard material is 100% waterproof. The thing that sticks out the most for us however is the high level of LCV (Look Cool Value). You have to admit those guards look pretty badass. Pick up a set today by visiting: www.RoxSpeedFX.com

GM64 MODULE HELMET

CARDO SCALA RIDER G9X Helmet-to-Helmet Communicators The G9x from Cardo is taking helmet-to-helmet communications to the next level. First, and as the name suggests, this unit allows you to connect via voice command to 8 additional riders in your group which means you wont need to take your hands off the bar to spontaneously talk. You can also use “Flash Pairing” for anyone you meet out on the trails with another G9x by simply “bumping” your two units together. Yes we are well aware there are several jokes in that statement but we are going to pass, as there are too many other features we still have to get to. The G9x also allows you to stream music from your Bluetooth enabled device and then you can even Music-Share™ that music wirelessly to your passenger on your sled. The G9x will also receive in-ear navigation instructions from Bluetooth enabled GPS devices and will allow you accept or reject incoming phone calls by voice command. Lastly the G9x has a built in FM radio with 6 programmable station presets and smart auto scan. All in all, we at OSM would like to suggest they simply call this KITT and we all can wear our Knight-Rider shirts, as this technology has almost come to that. Available at your local Motovan Dealer: www.motovan.com

AVENGER

We could not put together a touring buyer’s guide without mentioning the new GM64 Module Helmet from GMAX. The designers have put serious thought into this bucket protector like tweaking the rotation of the flip jaw to increase your line of sight and making the helmet actually feel lighter by distributing the weight more evenly. The new frame design also provides better protection for “riderforward” sleds we are all riding now with a constant seal around the shield. Other features include a button that allows you to operate the module with one-gloved hand, relocated vents to help keep the snow dust down and a quick detachable inner sun shield that makes you feel like Maverick from Top Gun when you deploy it. Come to think of it; First GM64 we see on the trail with Goose, Maverick or Iceman airbrushed on it gets a FREE OSM subscription for life…Contact your local Gamma Dealer for full details. www.gammasales.com

Best fuel economy of Any pickup ever. That’s right, ever. The All-New 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has gotten into the habit of making history. Earlier this year, it won Motor Trend’s 2014 Truck of the Year Award® – the second year in a row and the first time any truck has ever won it back-to-back. Then Canada’s only Light Duty Diesel pickup was rated as good as 7.1 L/100 km or 40 miles per gallon highway* – the best fuel economy ever recorded for a pickup truck. The super-efficient 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V6 engine is also powerful with unsurpassed 420 lb-ft of torque† and up to 9,200 lb of towing capability.• So if you want to save on fuel and get the job done every time, look to the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Otherwise, history might just pass you by.

*Based on 2014 EnerGuide highway fuel consumption ratings. Government of Canada test methods used. Your actual fuel consumption will vary based on driving habits and other factors. 10.2 L/100 km (28 mpg) city and as good as 7.1 L/100 km (40 mpg) highway on Ram 1500 4x2 model with 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 and 8-speed automatic. Ask your retailer for EnerGuide information. •When properly equipped. †Based on Automotive News Full-Size pickups. RAM is a registered trademark of Chrysler Group LLC.
