iding throughout the fall is my favourite time to be out, maybe because the heavy humid air has lifted and is replaced with fresh cool air. The bugs that bite are gone for the year and the scenery is much more colorful than ever. It’s always around this time of year that I start reminding the guys when we’re in the shop that we need to begin installing parts on our ATVs and Side-by-Sides, like windshield, plows, larger hand on a few, etc. But before we start our winter shop banter, there’s still a lot more fall riding before the snow falls, and lately some of these days still feel like summer! Mark your calendars now for the World’s Largest Snowmobile, ATV & Powerpsorts Show at the International Centre. This October 23, 24, 25, 2015 will mark the 28th Annual Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show. You will see all the new wares from Arctic Cat, Can-Am, CF Moto, Honda, Kawasaki, Kubota, Nordik, Polaris, Yamaha; just to name a few. These displays will be showing off their vehicles in their corporate displays. There will be numerous Clubs, Federations and Tourism areas in attendance awaiting the crowd of interested enthusiasts. NEWS YAMAHA INTRODUCES ALL-NEW YXZ1000R

Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, introduces the all-new YXZ1000R, the world’s only pure sport Side-by-Side vehicle. Boasting a high-performance 3-cylinder 998cc engine with a class-defining 5-speed, sequential shift manual transmission, the two-seat YXZ1000R provides a superior driver-connected experience in the dunes, desert, or on the trail. The YXZ1000R’s 3-cylinder, 12-valve, DOHC, liquid cooled 998cc engine puts out the most reliable and durable power of any 1,000cc-class machine. As the industry’s first sport 3-cylinder engine, it boasts an aggressive 11.3:1 compression ratio and 10,500 RPM redline to provide a true sport SxS experience. With broad, linear torque, the YXZ1000R responds to driver input with exciting sport performance power from low to highrpm range, and the triple throttle bodies provide a more direct connection between driver throttle input and engine response. A high-mounted, high-volume clean air inlet provides maximum airflow, while dual air filters – one oiled foam and wet pleated paper type – provide maximum filtration and superior engine performance in even the harshest riding environments. The durable and reusable foam filter features tool-free access for simplified maintenance. The YXZ1000R features the industry’s first fully manual 5-speed sequential shift transmission in a SxS vehicle, delivering a direct connection between driver and machine for superior performance, confidence and the first and only true pure sport SxS experience. The 5-speed sequential shift is manually operated via a clutch pedal and short-stroke shift lever for smooth, secure gear engagement. The YXZ1000R’s all-new clutch design is optimized for the vehicle’s class-leading engine output, providing a smooth and connected shifting feeling with reliable power. The all-new sport-inspired foot-pedal operated hydraulic clutch system is said to provide light, consistent and natural feeling feedback to the driver, increasing confidence in challenging off-road terrain. Strategically mounted low and longitudinally in the chassis, the engine placement affords the YXZ1000R long rear wheel

and suspension travel for “superior” sport SxS performance. A single shaft, one-axis balancer reduces engine vibration by 25% for a more comfortable ride, while also allowing a rigid engine mount to reduce weight and offer a more direct throttle/engine feel for the driver. The vehicle’s front differential incorporates Yamaha’s proven On-Command® 2WD, 4WD and 4WD full diff-lock – a driver-controlled system that eliminates the hesitation or slipping experienced in computer-engaged systems. An automotive-style 4WD dial is intuitive and conveniently located on the center console, and provides simple and seamless transitions between the 2WD, 4WD and 4WD full diff lock settings. The YXZ1000R employs Yamaha’s proven Electric Power Steering (EPS). Set in a new, more compact and lightweight EPS unit, the optimized steering ratios provide precise handling through the best balance of assist and positive feedback from the terrain. Critical for premium handling is strong, smooth and predictable stopping power, and the YXZ1000R accomplishes this by featuring four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes with twin piston calipers at all corners. Large 245mm rotors were adopted for enhanced cooling and reduced brake noise. The YXZ1000R boasts massive, long travel FOX 2.5 Podium Shocks® with 16-inches of travel in front and 17-inches out back. The piggyback reservoir shock absorbers provide top performance, confidence and comfort for driver and passenger. The fully adjustable front and rear FOX shocks feature adjustable hi- and low-speed compression, adjustable rebound, and adjustable preload settings. The rear shock utilizes a FOX Bottom Out Cup (BOC) technology that helps maintain ongoing comfort while reducing the chance for bottoming out in extreme conditions. The vehicle’s color matched, rigid bushing pivot double A-arm design is uniquely configured and provides superior handling and a comfortable, confidence-inspiring planted feeling in tough terrain, over deep whoops, and throughout all-day, off-road punishment. The front A-arms have optimized castor, bump steer and Ackerman – throughout the travel and steering angle – to achieve the best cornering ability and positive steering feedback with light effort. The rear double A-arm design is uniquely configured to provide superior handling and a comfortable, confidenceinspiring planted feeling. Spherical bearings ensure accurate tire alignment and the rear shocks are mounted as far out as possible, providing the longest and optimum stroke. The rear suspension design provides superior straight-line stability with minimal camber variance throughout the entire range of travel. The all-new YXZ1000R is assembled at Yamaha’s U.S. factory in Newnan, Georgia for worldwide distribution. Color options include Yamaha Racing Blue/White, Blaze Orange/ Black, and Yamaha’s 60th anniversary celebration Yellowand-Black. Arriving at dealerships first, the 60th anniversary Special Edition (SE) model adopts Yamaha’s heritage color and graphic scheme and a true bead lock rim.

“6 YEARS OF RIDING DIRTY FOR A GREAT CAUSE!”.....TRAX4 BREAST CANCER Over 30 riders, both men and women participated in the 6th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV event. The annual weekend event, hosted by, Grand Tappattoo Resort, Sequin, Ontario, was held in Spring 2015 and was filled with lots of sun, mud and fun!! The excitement began on Friday afternoon with our Early Bird ride which this year was done as a Hunt/Poker Hand which was a huge hit. All participants were given a list of “things” to take a picture of throughout the day on the Park to Park Trail. On Friday night at a Meet & Greet pasta dinner, everyone submitted each photos in exchange for a poker card. Needless to say we had some really creative and hilarious photos submitted! Congratulations to John Rowett for winning this Poker hand!

On Saturday morning the group departed from the resort for our Annual Pink Ribbon ride on the exclusive private trail system offered by Bear Claw Tours. Riders were challenged by all sorts of terrain from mud, rocks and water ways. The sun was shining as the group stopped to enjoy lunch on the trail and a few runs through a water hole. We all returned to the resort late afternoon for a quick shower and to enjoy a prime rib dinner evening full of fun including, free give-away’s and the opportunity to bid on some amazing silent auction items. After 5 years of watching some really humorous situations on our annual ride, it was decided to create a “WTF Award” (sponsored by Max Rolph). This award was given to the most “dramatic mishap” of the day and while there were certainly several candidates who qualified with some pretty humorous results, the award went to Marcin Tomczyk for attempting to change his quad into a submarine and humbly bowing his

head while being towed back to the trailhead! We are super excited to announce that we raised over $60,000 at the event through participant pledges, corporate sponsorships, silent auction and raffle. We are thrilled to announce that for the 4th year in a row, Mitch Kleinstein is the recipient of our highest pledges award! Congratulations to Mitch for topping this list once again this year (although this year he had some serious competitors). A heartfelt thank-you to all our volunteers and friends who helped us out on the trails; Peter Searle for being part of our Friday Park to Park ride; Andrew & Jonathon Ryeland, Kevin Grice and John Hennig from Bear Claw Tours for hosting and guiding us for our all day ride on Saturday! Thank-you to our amazing sponsors that support this event and make it possible: ATV World Magazine, Bass Pro, Bear Claw Tours, Colemans, and Radioworld. A very big thank-you to all the companies and individuals who donated items for our Silent Auction! Look for us at the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersport Show October 23, 24 & 25, 2015 at the International Centre in Mississauga. Don’t miss out on purchasing a raffle ticket at our booth or your nearest Royal Distributing dealership for a chance to win the Early Bird draw prize of a 2015 Can-Am Outlander 650XMR donated by Factory Recreation. the technology we have today, and how fast technology has been changing to date, it is hard to even imagine what next year let alone the next ten years is going to bring. Much of it is good, but I think we all have to agree that a fair amount of it out there is questionable to say the least. It may not be considered to be in the “bad category” but certainly questionable. What stirred these points with me was a recent phone call from a buddy of mine that wanted my opinion on a “knock off” ATV. (An ATV that is a manufactured copy of another manufacturer’s model) Now, “knock offs” in purses, clothing, perfumes, watches, even foods and other

famous designer labels have been around for some time now, but they seem to be getting more and frequent. Heck I even got caught one time buying a pair of Foakley (Fake Oakley) sunglasses thinking they were a pair of genuine Oakley’s at a very good price. Some people may think that they are getting a deal with a “knock off” but are they really? Is the quality there? So what about patents and what is the government’s take on the laws surrounding this issue. Some part of this doesn’t seem kosher. So…..back to my Buddy’s phone call. The price of this ATV was much cheaper than the tried and true model of the long established Japanese manufacturer. The fit and finish was even quite good. Even had a couple of options not available from the copied OEM, and a better warranty to boot. To be honest, a couple of years ago I would have told my friend to walk (or even run) the other way, but the truth is these vehicles (UTV, ATV and motorcycles) are getting better and better each model year. The parts network of the serious manufacturers’ has certainly improved from just a couple of years ago. Remember, at one time even all the Japanese companies were accused of questionable quality (albeit it was a while ago) when breaking into the North American market place. This is not to say that some manufacturers make equipment that is still not very good, but there are some manufacturers’ that are improving and certainly taking pride in their product. So enter in the process of “reverse engineering”. Although you may think this may be a relatively new process, if you believe some “conspiracy theorists” this has been occurring since mid 1947. What I am referring to is the alleged “UFO” crash in Roswell, New Mexico. For the record, the government still says it was a weather balloon. (And we can always believe the government right?) The conspiracy theorists still contend that this is where the first computer components came from and they were reversed engineered from parts salvaged from the alleged UFO. I will leave the legitimacy of either explanation up to you. So….moving forward to technology in 2015, we have gizmos and devices that can copy and print working components to a very high degree of accuracy. First use a

Here is a plastic replica of a 6” adjustable wrench that was printed as one unit at iCAMP at Canadore College. The jaws and adjusting mechanism move the same as the steel version it was copied from. Check out 3D printing on You Tube to be really amazed.

3D scanner that records the shape of a component into design and simulation software where if need be improvements can be made, and then send it to a 3D printer where it can be made of varying types of materials in any type of colour. On a side note, something to think about for that “special” person on your Christmas list that has everything. (yes I mentioned Christmas which is less than 125 shopping days at the time of writing this article) 3D printers are affordable for home ownership and it would be relatively easy to make yourself or significant other into a super cool action figure or bobblehead. For the record, not an original idea of mine saw it on an episode of the “Big Bang Theory”.

The gear cluster on the left still has the support material between the gears and is how it comes out of the 3D printer. The gear cluster on the right has been cleaned. These clusters were printed as one single unit. The gears are all meshed together and will rotate on their shafts and if you spin one, they all spin.

Here is a chain sprocket with a working ball bearing and attachment bolt designed from concept as a prototype. This is a very cost effective way to check if the component will fit and work in the application it was designed for.

Companies can now for a relatively low cost of development take an ATV or any part of it for that matter, using this technology take a tried and true popular vehicle, strip it down to each nut and bolt, clone it and sell it with their name on it with next to no R&D costs. Although this doesn’t seem above board (I believe it is not) the silver lining of the dark cloud is that it will drive the development of better equipment, much the same way pornography caused the internet to improve so quickly. At a professional development conference a year ago, I saw how this technology would allow the repair of an artificial limb of a child to be made overnight instead of a month which was required when forms and molds were used. This single purpose made whatever caused the development process of this equipment to accelerate OK with me. Think about being able to “print” your prescription medication, an arm that is broken on your reading glasses or the whole pair of glasses that matter. How about a repair part for your washing machine or car, the possibilities truly become endless. Of course with the good there will be bad, but that has always been human nature right? Who knows…… maybe we will get it right this time. The one thing to keep in mind with “knock off” type objects/items is that looks can be deceiving. The quality of the materials used could easily result in the knock off being of inferior quality that could simply cause a poor service life or it could be something safety related resulting in a serious component failure. The term “buyers beware” will become even more relevant. You have to smile though, only the human race could figure out how to get ahead by doing something in reverse!

GEORGE FOREMAN

“Big George” was a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist, but outside the ring he went on to be an ordained minister, author, and entrepreneur. Retiring in 1997 ant the age of 48, Foreman was the oldest Heavyweight Champion in history boasting a 76-5 record and an incredible 68 knockouts.

THE HONDA FOREMAN

Bursting onto the working scene in 1995, the Foreman 400 4x4 was the strongest, most efficient Honda ATV yet. The Foreman is powered by a longitudinal engine design that positions the crankshaft perpendicular to its axles. This revolutionary design featured less powerrobbing directional changes, fewer moving parts, less weight and a lower center of mass. Twenty years later, the workhorse Foreman is still using this proven design.

FOREMAN GRILL

In probably one of the most successful celebrity/athlete endorsements of all time, the double-sided George Foreman grill sold more than 100 million units. Big George’s deal netted him an estimated 200 million dollars, which is considerably more than he ever earned as a boxer. Evander Holyfield, Carl Lewis, and Hulk Hogan all tried to jump on the celebrityendorsed grill bandwagon, but none enjoyed the kind of success that Foreman did.

REGINALD ALBERT “RED” FORMAN

The ultimate disgruntled Dad from the FOX hit TV sitcom That 70’s Show, “Red Forman” was a man’s man, with an extensive military background, strong views on “family values”, hard work, and devotion to his family. Somewhere between a blue collar conservative and a staunch Republican, Red could be called many things, but un-American wasn’t one of them. An over the top proud American, he once referred to Canada and France as lesser countries, and generally referred to the rest of the world as “Not America”.

TIPS & TRICKS

Nick Nelson

XP Cylinder Bleed

1

The XP900 and XP1000 cooling system must be bled anytime the coolant has been removed and replaced. After filling the system with coolant, warm the motor up, shut off and bleed air from the 8mm bolt above the exhaust port. Repeat 3-4 times until you get no air leakage.

Keep That Pack In

2

When disassembling just about any manual transmission engine, you will need to leave the clutch pack installed to keep the transmission from spinning while removing the large center clutch nut. We apply a little pressure with a rag and our thumb while removing it with an impact.

Crank Check

3

A crank that isn’t perfectly true can vibrate you to death as well as having a really negative effect on performance and RPM. Even a few thousands out can be very noticeable in a high performance motor. You should even double check brand new cranks before assembly as they can often be out of true from the manufacturer.

The XP 1000 comes with a power distribution block, ready for adding accessories. You can upgrade from the stocker, or even add one to any other UTV with this simple ATC fuse distribution block. We have found them at many good hardware and automotive stores. A quality 8 gauge automotive stereo amplifier power wire works great to run power from the battery to the distribution block.

TIPS & TRICKS

Piston In First

Nick Nelson

5

If you’ve ever rebuilt a current four stroke top end, then you know what a pain in the @$$ properly compressing the rings can be. Most mechanics in the “know” will install the piston w/rings into the cylinder first, then slide the “assembly” down the studs and onto the rod. Be sure to cover the crankcase opening with a clean rag before attempting to install the circlip.

Laying In Wait

6

A properly organized work area and tool storage is a good mechanic’s best asset. The guys at CT Racing use peg board, and lots of magnetic tool rail to display, organize and keep every tool at the ready when needed. This is all mounted directly above each mechanic’s workbench.

Penny Torque

7

A penny or other small coin can be used as a stopper in between the teeth of two gears. This is especially helpful when trying to keep the motor from turning over so that you can torque engine bolts, like the ones that retain the clutch springs or main shaft gears.

Valve Clean-Up

8

Heavy pressure on a wire wheel can be used to easily and effectively remove any carbon build-up or corrosion from stainless steel exhaust valves. You can do stainless or even lower tech plain steel valves, but do not attempt with titanium as they have a performance coating that will come off.

THE ALL-NEW 2016 POLARIS RZR XP TURBO EPS

Y

es that’s right! The factory Turbocharged RZR XP we’ve all been waiting for is here, and it’s everything you’ve been dreaming about. The new RZR XP Turbo EPS has been engineered from the ground up to translate industryleading power into unmatched performance. Polaris didn’t just slap a Turbo on last year’s XP 1000. In fact, they built a completely new 925 cc ProStar engine, developed specifically for the turbo application.

RZR XP TURBO The industry leading 144 HP Turbocharged engine provides an impressive 0-60 mph time of 5.89 seconds and a 45% torque increase. The turbo specific, ProStar 925 features forged pistons and an upgraded 270-degree firing order crankshaft. The new forged crankshaft is mated to two high strength connecting rods. The new cylinder features a closed deck design for increased sealing ability, and the head comes with trick sodium filled exhaust valves and a new lubrication system. Performance is kept consistent at all temperatures with a liquid charge air cooler that uses a front mounted radiator and a high-flow electric pump. The engine management system has been updated to include knock detection, boost control and a high-flow, return style fuel system. This can provide maximum power delivery under all conditions, altitudes, and temperatures. As impressive as 144 HP might sound, Polaris wasn’t content with just owning the numbers game. Looking to provide maximum durability as well as performance, they developed a whole new Turbo-specific drive train, and dedicated thousands upon thousands of miles of testing to prove its superior strength. The new, super-efficient drive train features a brand new high performance PVT system with all-new clutches and drive belt, a stronger transmission with geared reverse, stronger shafts, and a High-Performance True On-Demand All-Wheel Drive System. The new, high flow targeted clutch air-cooling system is designed to reduce clutch and belt temps for extended belt life and improved overall clutch reliability. The RZR XP Turbo comes with the same FOX internal bypass shocks and front sway bar from last year’s naturally aspirated FOX Edition. Last year’s FOX edition was, without a doubt the best handling RZR to date. But the XP Turbo front end is an improvement upon that, with new front suspension geometry for less steering effort and better maneuverability. While it was not mentioned in the press release, we also noticed new, larger front CV axles with much bigger stub axles. The front axles were definitely the weak link to the XP front-end, and the new beefier set-up should really be an improvement. The compression adjustable, internal bypass shocks were also given bigger coil over springs, specific to the Turbo model. A lighterweight, progressive rate upper spring absorbs smaller impacts, and the stiffer main springs maintain ground clearance and absorb bigger impacts. Polaris has also improved the braking on the more powerful XP Turbo platform. The braking system features new ventilated, stainless steel 248mm rotors and industry leading triple piston front calipers. We did notice however, that the same, short spline wheel studs are used to attach them to the hubs. Seating position has been optimized on all 2016 RZR’s, with a new angle leaving the driver closer to the steering wheel, with elbows closer to the body for less arm fatigue and a more natural driving position. Adjustable seatbelt sliders have been added for a comfortable belt position that can fit drivers and passengers of any height or body type.

FORCED AIR COOLING The XP Turbo’s second full-sized radiator is fed plenty of cool air through this trick induction type hood scoop.

RIDE TIME

We were only able to get our hands on a loaner unit a few days before our editorial deadline. With multiple stories left to write, and mere days to do it, any other machine test might have been benched for the next issue. With every intention of first finishing my deadlines, the RZR Turbo lasted all of about forty-five minutes in the garage before its maiden voyage. We haven’t had time to take it to the dunes or really wide-open desert, where it’s sure to really dominate, but the increased HP and Torque is noticed immediately, regardless of terrain. We drove the XP Turbo on our usual test loop, with miles of fast, hard-pack dirt road, a few small sand washes, some rocky terrain and a steep, rutted hill climb that seems to go on for ever. The Turbo XP is over the top impressive, from the bottom end, all the way up. The turbo lag I expected is not even noticeable off the bottom, and it flat-out pulls through the midrange and into the top end. The power difference between a standard XP 1000 and a Turbo XP is greater than what we experienced when the 900 was replaced with a 1000. The new Turbo XP is clearly a whole new class of RZR. Throttling down the road, the XP Turbo throws you back in the seat, and feels like it’s going to pull the front end up. The massive power increase is even more noticeable when climbing steep hills, or driving on any kind of power robbing incline. While we have not yet dune tested our XP Turbo, its massive torque increase will undoubtedly be equally impressive in the soft sand.

You will also notice and appreciate the new frontend geometry on the tighter, more technical terrain. We were especially impressed in the faster, hard-pack switchback turns on our test loop. The suspension itself is every bit as impressive as last year’s FOX car. It’s very resilient to bottoming in g-out situations, yet the ride is still smooth, maybe even smoother than last year’s specs at slower speeds. The new XP Turbo does require premium gas, whereas the naturally aspirated ones can run on 87. While this may require a little more careful planning on your next adventure, the benefits far outweigh the hassle and extra expense. The new, much larger clutch system has yet to show any signs of belt wear or trouble, but we have only put about 100 hard miles on it so far. Time will tell as far as that goes, but so far it seems to be an amazing machine. The first factory built turbo RZR also carries a confidence inspiring, one year factory warranty, which will surely be a huge sales point for Polaris in over the years to come.

2016 KAWASAKI MULE PRO-FX Answering to last year’s super successful launch of the powerful and dependable MULE PRO-FXT, Kawasaki brings us a single-row variant dubbed the MULE PRO-FX. A true, full-size side by side, the new single row seat version gains the largest bed in its class, keeps its cabin comfort, and increases hauling capacity. The PRO-FX’s massive 20 square ft. cargo bed can carry a full-size pallet with the tailgate closed and has an impressive 1000 lb capacity. The gasassisted dump bed is built from high-tensile steel that is as durable as it gets, and can be welded to for tool implementations. The three seat PRO-FX has been developed right alongside its six seat brother; in fact, it still shares the same engine and chassis platform. 48 ft-lbs of torque from an EFI fed, 812cc three-cylinder engine make it the fastest and most powerful MULE ever built. The PRO-FX also gets the same independent suspension, disc brakes, engine braking and the option of Speed-Sensitive EPS. A 2000 lb. tow rating with a 2” receiver hitch is almost as impressive as the bed capacity. The MULE PRO-FX interior is functional and feature filled as well. A multifunction LCD display keeps you well informed, and dash mounted switches can electronically select between 2wd, 4wd, and Diff. lock drive modes. Full automotive style doors keep you safely protected within the vehicle, and it’s never hard to find a cup holder. The EPS equipped models also come with tilt steering that adjusts an impressive 40 degrees. The heart of the new MULE PRO-FX is its “intelligent design” chassis. The super durable chassis features ladder-type construction on the main-frame, optimizing flex, rigidity, and strength. The “intelligent” part is that it’s been designed and laid out specifically to protect vital components. Some other key durability features include a water resistant, protective ECU cover, a stainless steel exhaust system, functional fender well protection, and super tough rubber bushings at A-Arms and Rear knuckle connections. This “Intelligent Design” backed by the unrivalled “Kawasaki Strong” three year warranty is what makes the new MULE a no brainer when looking for a premium workhorse SxS.

2016 KAWASAKI MULE

PRO-FXT RANCH EDITION Kawasaki’s MULE PRO-FXT proved to be the fastest and most versatile MULE ever. The three or six passenger adaptive Trans Cab seating configuration is quite possibly the most ideal set up that a Rancher or Farmer could ever find. The ability to transform between a six-seat unit with a small bed, to a threeseat option with a massive “long” bed in less than a minute is pretty amazing, and especially useful within the workforce. In the six seat configuration, the PRO-FXT can carry 350 lbs. in its reduced sized bed, or 1000 lbs. when set up as a three seat. Rear bench seating is elevated stadium style for an improved view, and features retractable seat belts and grab handles. The newest Kawasaki MULE PRO-FXT Ranch Edition is this very same machine, with enough class and style to be the Big Boss’ ride. With just about every upgrade imaginable, like Metallic Titanium paint and great looking two-tone seat covers, it could easily be compared to Ford’s luxurious King Ranch Edition, or the Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn Edition pick-ups. In the same styling idea, the Ranch Edition features unique logo badges on the exterior and embossed into the seats. On top of all the standard MULE PRO-FXT features and EPS, the Ranch Edition gets its own special composite sun top, aluminum wheels, and high-intensity LED headlights. You will also find a high quality WARN winch already mounted, with a wired remote actuator and an integrated fuse kit.

The Ranch edition features dual row seating with both automotive style doors and embossed ranch edition logos.

The transport style bed can be changed in less than 1 minute from a full size bed to an additional row of comfortable seating.

Like the PRO-FX and PRO-FXT, the Ranch edition’s 10.2” of ground clearance and 8.7 inches of suspension travel can get you anywhere you want to go, and comfortably. Each corner also uses twin-tube, preloadadjustable shocks to dampen out the bumps. The MULE’s durable a-arm design utilizes large diameter tubing with rubber bushings at the attachment points. This further isolates any steering kickback and provides fewer parts to wear out than a conventional a-arm/spindle set up. Overall, the most noticeable and premium feeling part of the Ranch Edition are the two-tone seat covers found on both front and rear bench seats. They are finished in black and titanium, and the back panels feature embossed Ranch Edition logos. All the MULE PRO models also come standard with three-point harness seatbelts and automotive-style doors. The PROFX models come equipped with a high-output alternator, and the Ranch Edition gives you four separate 12V power outlets; two up front and two in the rear for any of your portable accessories you might want to use along the trail. Super bright LED auxiliary headlights are another very useful accessory that can be found standard on a Ranch Edition. The same 12” cast aluminum wheels and the sun top from the LE spec PRO-FXT can also be found dressing up the exterior of the Ranch Edition.

RIDE TIME

Kawasaki invited us to the Chimney Peak Winery for a prime opportunity to drive the new MULEs, as well as seeing them in their true environment. The massive 13,000 acre ranch includes miles upon miles of fire roads, trails, stream crossings and hill climbs. Nothing that was over the top extreme, but plenty of opportunity to push the suspension to its limits, and even try out the 4wd and Difflock. We started out with a good loop in the single row, three-seat MULE PRO-FX. With the same exact chassis, suspension, and motor package, the slightly lighter FX feels a bit faster than the six-seat FXT. This quicker and slightly nimbler feeling is even further amplified when the six-seat version is full of passengers. When it comes to navigating the more technical trails, you will completely appreciate the attention Kawasaki engineers paid to break-over and approach/departure angles on both versions. The 26-degree break-over angle gives you decent clearance when climbing stair-step type terrain, and the impressive approach/departure angles will keep you from hanging up the front end or rear end on the same type of ledges. The PRO-FX and FXT actually feel really similar if you’re driving them with a single passenger. You can feel the slight

weight difference, but it’s barely noticeable. Compared to previous MULE models and other class competitors, the PRO FX and FXT are very capable workhorse machines that manage to increase the fun factor with respectable HP and handling. The MULE PRO is not going to impress the guy looking for pure entertainment value, but it’s definitely quick enough to put a smile on the face of your average hunter or adventure seeker. The power curve is as smooth as it gets, and it can accomplish just about anything you could expect of it. Top speed is also reasonably high and it’s still quiet and comfortable. The overall comfort factor is really good, and the flat seats and roomy floorboards make getting in and out easier than most machines. The same flat seat design that improves ease of entry and exit is also its downfall when driven aggressively. Pretty much everyone that drove the MULE aggressively would agree that the seat needs some sort of bolstering to keep your butt in place. All in all, the rapidly growing MULE PRO-FX line is full of really great UTVs that are perfect for the Utility/Recreation market. The Mule PRO line has something for everyone from the farmer; hunter, trail rider; recreation guy; government worker; commercial or industrial. The MULE PRO will surely be finding its place in the workforce.

INTO THE WILD UTV CANADA’S WILDCAT SPORT E

very spring as the snow melts and our trails start to reappear, it seems like almost a race to switch over from our snow toys to the Off-Road ones. Our favorite ATVs and SxS’s have been banished to the garage and we can’t wait to get them back out into their element. These early season trails are often wet and muddy, but we all know that is half the reason were out there.

The guys and gals at UTV Canada are avid off-roaders and they truly understand the importance of getting in those early season rides. In fact, their latest build has been designed for exactly that. They wanted a trail friendly UTV, one that is comfortable for long rides, ready for slick and muddy trails, and had good rider protection to keep its occupants reasonably clean. The machine choice was easy; the

new Wildcat Sport Limited EPS comes stock with excellent suspension, full coverage aluminum doors, and a really impressive motor. The 60+ HP motor transfers power through Team Rapid Response clutches and then offers a true, manual differential lock for extremely tough driving situations like deep mud or rocky hill climbs. With quite possibly the perfect starting point, it was just a matter of

carefully choosing the right accessories to turn the Wildcat Sport into the ultimate trail machine. The Sport limited needs no help in the suspension department as it comes with top of the line, fully adjustable Stage 5 ELKA shocks on all four corners. A lot of R&D went into these shocks before the Wildcat’s release, and they are not a cheapened down, budget version, they are the real thing and work very well. UTV Canada started with a few aluminum Arctic Cat accessories like the roof, and front & rear bumpers. The reasonably light-weight bumpers protect the radiator, lights, and bed from collision damage with trees, brush, and other vehicles, etc. The roof is a no brainer as it shelters you from the sun as well as any unexpected precipitation. Arctic Cat also supplied a handy, weather resistant storage bag that mounts between the seats for additional necessity storage. Surviving Canada’s trail system can often require some serious undercarriage protection. UTV Canada installed a full set of heavy duty UHMW skid plates and front and rear A-Arm guards. The super durable, plastic like UHMW is nearly unbreakable, and it really helps the vehicle slide over obstacles instead of sticking and dragging. The Trail Armor set is even color accented to add a little style to whatever machine you’re protecting. As many of these trails can put you in the driver’s seat for hours at a time, the Wildcat’s interior was a major focus for the build. The stock seats and belts were ditched in favor of PRP’s Trail GT SE seats. The super comfortable PRP seats offer much better containment, adjustable sliders, seat drains, and custom embroidery options. UTV Canada opts to have their cool looking maple leaf logo embroidered in yellow and white. PRP’s auto latch 4-point safety harnesses were chosen for increased safety and

comfort, without the nuisance of having to constantly buckle into a race type harness. While out on the trail, quality tunes are ever important. UTV Canada looks to SSV WORKS for the ultimate in custom UTV stereo systems and solutions. SSV has vehicle specific kits for nearly every model SxS, and the Wildcat sport is no exception. SSV makes an all inclusive, bolt-in, overhead Bluetooth audio system. The weatherproof system includes four 6.5, 2-way speakers, and installs in minutes with a simple two wire hook up. With kick ass tunes, you gotta have some bass; SSV also supplied a custom fit fiberglass enclosure and a ten inch subwoofer. Larger, and way more aggressive tires were needed for the mud pits and wet trail conditions. UTV Canada turns to Colorado Components and Motosports Alloys for extremely lug, 28-10-14 EFX Moto Boss tires that feature impressive clean out ability to go alongside the massive forward traction. Fourteen inch M16 Vice

beadlock wheels allow for extremely low operating pressures without the chance of de-beading from the rim. A slip-on stainless steel exhaust system from Muzzys is coupled with a fuel controller to provide proper jetting and squeeze out a little extra power. An awesome sounding, telltale exhaust note is another Muzzy advantage. An EPI Performance clutch kit and secondary spring is used to re-clutch the Wildcat to properly match the larger tires for optimum performance. While nobody wants to think about getting stuck, having a winch to recover your buddies that didn’t make it across that big mud pit can be a lifesaver. A KFI Products SE35 Stealth winch was chosen for the front of UTV Canada’s Wildcat. The synthetic rope won’t give you slivers or scratch your machine, and the 3500-pound rating should be able to pull out even the stuckest of machines. The build was capped off with a Direction 2 Half Windshield for wind deflection and increased cabin comfort. Breakaway side

ince 1962, Ontario Drive and Gear (ODG) has been manufacturing quality precision gears and transmissions for a variety of applications, but to the off-road world, it is their somewhat odd looking and incredibly versatile and capable all-terrain vehicle dubbed the ARGO that sets them apart. The multi-wheeled ARGO was first introduced in 1967, making it one of the first and longest running all-terrain vehicles in the industry. This past summer, ODG unleashed an arsenal of new ARGO vehicles, each designed for specific applications and end users. The crew from ATV World was there to get a first look and ride, and we were so impressed, we needed to dig deeper to get the full story on this amazing company. From recreational and hunting applications, to the oil fields of the Bakken and even the moon, the ARGO team has been hard at work refining their do-everything vehicle.

The ARGO team has employed the popular Duck Commander duo of Willie and Jason Robertson as brand ambassadors for the company going forward.

Year founded: 1962 Founder: Ortwin Stieber What is the story behind the company name? / How did the idea for the first ARGO vehicle come about? Ontario Drive & Gear Limited (ODG) was founded in Kitchener, Ontario, in 1962. As the subsidiary of a German company, its objective was to design and manufacture power transmissions and gears for the North American market. ODG developed and manufactured a special transmission for a 6-wheel-drive, skid steer ATV called the Amphicat. Realizing the potential of the ATV market, ODG decided to introduce its own 6-wheel amphibious vehicle – and in 1967, the ARGO was born. It was named for its stamina on land and water after the Argonauts of Greek mythology. What is your bestselling vehicle and why? Our bestselling vehicle is the ARGO 750 HDi, which is primarily a mid-range vehicle in terms of price that can be used for both recreational and commercial purposes. We have lots of commercial users in the search and rescue, oil & gas, mining and utilities sector and for them, the ARGO 750 HDi is a workhorse that can get the job done, no matter the terrain, weather or application.

Due to the extreme capabilities and go anywhere versatility of the ARGO, the vehicles have become extremely popular with first responders and rescue missions that need to traverse extreme terrain.

What makes your company and product better than others? ODG has built a solid reputation for the design and manufacture of quality gears and transmissions, while ARGO is acknowledged as the world leader in 6- and 8-wheeled extreme terrain amphibious vehicles (XTV). With little to no direct competition, ARGO truly is in a class of its own, and has been able to successfully carve out a distinct market niche for its unique vehicle qualities and performance attributes. How do you decide and develop future vehicles and features? A good example is our recent ARGO EXPO. In this instance, this past August

the company unveiled nine new target market vehicle platforms, designed for outdoor enthusiasts and commercial applications alike. When we started this ambitious project to deliver industry specific models, the first thing we did was ask hundreds of end users, industry professionals and dealers what they wanted from an extreme terrain machine. This is a common sort of practice whenever we set about designing a new vehicle or adding particular features - we go to the field and ask end users for feedback. In this particular case, the feedback was unanimous: they told us they wanted vehicles with more comfort, versatility, go-anywhere capabilities, power and the critical component features that allowed them to do their jobs more effectively. Nothing on the market was able to fulfill their needs properly. Based on the extensive field-testing and feedback we received, we delivered exactly what end users asked for – whether they are a big game hunter, fire chief or lineman. Where is the best place to purchase ARGO vehicles (In United States and Canada)? ARGO has a considerable dealer footprint across North America, with more than 150 dealers in the United States and 100 dealers in Canada. You can find a dealer near you by visiting our website at www.argoxtv.com and clicking on the dealer locater tab.

Jim Shockey, to create the ultimate ARGO 8x8 all season, all-terrain amphibious vehicle. Designed to meet the specifications of hunt camp operators, lodge owners, and big game guides who traverse the world’s toughest terrain, the new ARGO Outfitter 8x8 XTI is a hunter’s dream come true, and features a number of unique options as standard equipment including improved seat cushions; angled four gun Sure Grip rack; removable hood rack; brushguards; dual rear entry steps; heated grips for driver and passenger; USB power outlet; enhanced lighting; dual bilge pumps and more. Tapping into his near 30 years of outfitting experience in the Yukon and Western Canada, it was incredibly valuable to get Jim’s suggestions and feedback to help design the new machine, and we’re really thrilled with the finished product.

Do you offer a warranty? Yes, we offer a one year warranty for all new vehicles and a three year warranty on all of our Kohler engines.

Tell us something about the company that you wish more people knew. In 2008, the company was asked to help the Canadian Space Agency create the Lunar Rover, and quickly emerged as the go-to designer of mobility platforms for lunar and planetary rovers. This work led ODG to further develop robotic rovers for defense, commercial and agricultural applications, and to the creation of the ARGO Space & Robotics Group to work exclusively on this growing business sector. One of the projects the Space & Robotics Group is working on is Artemis Jr., a rover that could go on a NASA expedition to the moon, planned for 2020. The company is in the midst of testing gears and bearings to see how they will withstand the harsh lunar environment and moon dust, which is similar to ground glass, only sharper. In fact, the company actually purchased a bucket of simulated moon dust for $5,000, which we’re using to develop the rover and its components.

What new ARGO product has you most excited and why? (associated image - ARGO Outfitter) One of the products that has got the entire company excited is our new ARGO Outfitter model; the end result of a collaboration that saw us team up with famed hunting expert

What is something you are sure to find inside the company fridge? To keep up with the busy and buzzy office and shop floor environment, we have free brewed coffee available to all employees throughout the day. In the fridge, you’d most likely find fresh cream, milk and maybe even the odd

What does Argo offer that others can’t match? The most visible qualities that set ARGO apart are both its ability to float, and its go anywhere capabilities. The ARGO can traverse all types of terrain, from rock to muskeg to deep snow and ice. As we like to say, ‘The ARGO goes where others can’t follow’. Do you offer technical support? Yes, ARGO offers technical support via trained experts here at our main manufacturing facility in New Hamburg, Ontario. Local technical support is also available via our local dealers and our vast international distributor network.

When not at work, where would we find you? Many of our employees are keen outdoors people and with the company being headquartered in a relatively rural area of the province, there are loads of great places to get outside and pursue your passion including hunting, fishing, hiking or biking the local trails. With South Western Ontario also known for its incredible produce, beef and cheeses, it’s also not uncommon to spot our employees out and about, enjoying the great local restaurants found in the area. Where is your favorite place to ride or associated activity with the vehicle? We’re lucky in the sense that we have a huge test track less than a five-minute ride from the office, with all sorts of terrain including trails, rock, swamps and streams. Anytime a new prototype becomes available, it’s very easy to test it out and put it through its paces. We also have a beautiful deer sanctuary that’s not too far, where we often take our dealers and distributors when we have them here for some of our bigger events. It is an absolutely massive property, and you really feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, despite just being a few kilometers from town. What’s next for the company? This past summer we unveiled nine new target market vehicle platforms, the most ever in our company’s 50-year history. This was an incredibly ambitious and demanding goal that required virtually the entire company to put these projects on the forefront of their day to day jobs. While some of these vehicles are now production ready and already being built, others require finalizing to ensure they meet the market’s requirements and expectations. Ensuring we get these new platforms ‘right’ is a critical priority for the business over the next couple of quarters. Of course, the company never rests on its laurels, and is continually innovating in an attempt to stay one step ahead of both the competition and the market. That being said, I wouldn’t be too surprised if this time next year we had a few new models to unveil, but I’m not going to give any secrets away in terms of what those units might be. In 10 words or less tell me what sets ARGO apart? An amphibious, extreme terrain vehicle that will take you anywhere.

We know at ATV World that the Fall Season brings out the truly dedicated outdoorsman. Guys that love to get out into the bush and camp, maybe do a bit of hunting, and now that the water is cooling down, try and catch their fill of fish. Knowing this, we have put together a list of items that we think will make your autumn riding that much better. …And yes, please take note of the “Camo Theme”. If you haven’t at one time said to yourself, “I want that” at least once from any of these cool products, may we suggest, you take up a new sport.

GM35 Helmet

Elevation>>>>>> Fleece

When the temperature drops, putting on the Elevation Fleece from FXR is going to take your day to the next level. Made from 100% Bonded Polyester the interior fleece provides exceptional warmth all the while wicking away that dreaded moisture that makes you feel colder. Features also include a large zippered breast pocket for your phone, and zipper hand pockets. Now that the technical features are covered, ultimately you have to admit, the overall cool factor of the brown and Realtree™ blocking makes this one sweet looking jacket! OGIO Rear Honcho Bag >>>>>> OGIO is known for making seriously good bags. The Rear Honcho is just one of those bags. Designed for the rider that needs extra space this cargo system has way too many features to mention. A few highlights are the heavy grade materials and the added molded exterior features that just make this bag feel bad-ass. You know when you open it that is quality. OGIO then developed an innovative “Dust Gasket” closure system that keeps the dirt and grim from leaking in through the zippers. Anyone who had attached a bag without the Dust Gasket will know exactly what we are talking about. OGIO also designed a quick access molded top pocket for things you need to access to all the time like, maps or your newest copy of ATV World Magazine. THE OUTDOORSMAN

With optional Hunter cover The half helmets are growing in popularity with the outdoor guys. We know this from all the different rides we go on. Why not add some style to your beanie and look at the GM35 in Camo. The GM35 is a lightweight Polycarbonate helmet that features a sleek new shape. GMAX throws a ton of options at this helmet like; padded chin strap, adjustable forehead vent and a removable zip-out rear neck curtain. The designers even took the neck curtain one step further and added built-in speaker pockets. Available also is the high-vis hunter cover for those days when you are deep in duck country. Available in Canada from your local Gamma Powersports Dealer: www.gammapowersports.com In the USA head over to www.g-max.com

FLY Patrol Jacket

We all know the importance of the “Orange Color” during the fall months. We would hate for our buggy to be mistaken for a moose…Yah because they sound very similar. But seriously being seen is as important as, having a serious riding jacket. The Fly Patrol Jacket is a serious riding jacket. It is made from durable Nylon material with strategically placed reinforced ballistic nylon panels for extra protection. It features massive venting in the front and back and has removable arms converting to an orange vest. All you need right there. Available in Canada at your local Gamma Powersports Dealer: www.gammapowersports.com

Don’t put your life on our line. This season, prevent a senseless tragedy by steering clear of train tracks. Not only is riding an ATV on a railroad’s right of way illegal, you may be too focused on having a good time to hear a train coming. If you witness any unsafe behaviour near the railroad, call CN Police at 1-800-465-9239 and help save lives.

Vision Handguards

Slasher Inline Camo Light Bar

+

American Made Cree LED Chips makes this lightbar one serious contender in the illumination game. The Inline Series from Slasher is made with a durable aluminum housing and strong anti-scratch polycarbonate lens. Slasher also claims this light bar totes 30,000 hours of lifetime. Do the math that is 1250 days or about 3.5 years of riding 24hours a day before they burn out. Yes pretty sure that is enough. The best part is the Inline Series is also available in a Camo paint scheme…. and we’re done. Available at your local Motovan Dealer: www.motovan.com

Gun Boot 4.0 and Mount An industry standard in hard gun cases, the Gun Boot 4.0 from Kolpin, sets the bar high. With features like a ergonomically designed handle, molded sling attachments, and a removable, shock absorbing, impact liner, this gun boot is going to keep your prized asset safe out on the trails. The designers even created a shape that accommodates both right and left bolt action rifles and shot guns. Then throw in the double UTV mount that is specifically designed for the 4.0 Boot and easily attaches to your rear mesh or tube roll bar, and you got the complete package. The model shown here is the only one available in Mossy Oak ® camo design. Available at your local Motovan Dealer: www.motovan.com

whatever extreme element you find yourself in. Constructed around a durable aluminum bar the Vision Handguard also adds protection from flying branches and debris. (Sorry we know that was pretty self-explanatory, but someone might have missed that part.) These Handguards also comes with an on/off switch that easily mounts to your handlebars. Available in Canada at your local Gamma Powersports Dealer: www.gammapowersports.com

Moose >>> Hunting Boots

Nothing ruins your day faster than wet soupy feet. These bad boys from Action Boots are completely waterproof and breathable. The upper boot is constructed of durable Cordura, with double stitches making it a seriously rugged foot protector. If you are in need of a new set of wheels then the Moose Hunting Boots could be for you. Available through your local Kimpex Dealer: www.kimpex.com

Universal Seat Cover

This thick padded stretch EVA seat cover not only “bling’s up your buggy” by adding a hint of Realtree™ camo, but also serves another really important feature - It keeps you clean and dry. It quickly fits to your seat with adjustable click-close bottom straps and an elasticized hem. It will fit most standard ATV seats and is machine washable. You could say; function and fashion just met in one simple seat cover. Available at www.royaldistributing.com

Shifting Circles

T

hese are interesting times in the offroad industry. Aside from associated growing pains for user groups, land access issues and the constant looming threat of heightened and more stringent safety requirements and performance limitations by big brother organizations, the off-road category is not just growing, but also exploring new ground, new concepts and new technologies. For certain there is a horsepower war at play, and at the same time, a fight to attract new riders to the fold. For the most part, Polaris has been leading this charge with not just bold introductions such as the first RZR XP and the solo seat Sportsman ACE, but also with a continued push for more power and improved suspension capabilities. The latest RZR XP Turbo and its touted 144-horsepower is a perfect example of this more is more approach. During this time, the competition from across the pond and has been eerily quiet. While both Arctic Cat and Can-Am have ramped up their off-road efforts in an attempt to answer the Polaris freight train, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha have stood on the sidelines, developing new graphics, and in some cases, “tamer” versions of similar products…until now. Rumors of a full sport Yamaha sideby-side have been on chat rooms for the better part of two years. News that the company that once owned the market with

their then innovative and capable Rhino was finally putting their foot back on the gas was met with heightened anticipation. This summer the rumors were finally confirmed as Yamaha introduced the YXZ1000R, a full-sport side-by-side with an extreme suspension, a powerful, high-performance 3-cylinder engine (an industry first) and most notable – a fully manual, 5-speed sequential shift transmission with hydraulic clutch. When Polaris introduced their first offroad vehicle in 1984, (which was a threewheeler by the way and then quickly converted to four-wheels as the Consumer Product Safety Commission consent decree was handed down) the idea of a fully automatic transmission was foreign to most. For Polaris it was borrowed technology from the snowmobile industry, and one in which they were very well versed in. For enthusiasts it was met with resistance, and for other makers it was dismissed as little more than a gimmick from a small snowmobile manufacturer in a northern Minnesota “hick-town”. Of course, we know now that eventually, and in some cases begrudgingly, the entire industry “shifted” to the seamless traits of the constant velocity transmission (CVT). In fact, it became a coveted and expected attribute of virtually every offroad vehicle produced, be it an ATV or side-by-side.

Yamaha looks to do more than just “throw dirt” with their new manual transmission YXZ1000R.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 12 • ISSUE 4

During that same time, Polaris erupted from its small town roots to become the largest off-road vehicle manufacturer in the world, and unquestionably, the leader by which all others both followed and emulated. The fully automatic transmission played a major roll in that rapid accession. Now the wheel, or more accurately the transmission, has come full-circle. Yamaha’s move to utilize a manual shift transmission in the YXZ will undoubtedly be met with mixed reviews…hesitation perhaps…just like the Polaris CVT system did more than 30-years ago. Most likely, the high-performance crowd will embrace the known technology with open arms. So too will performance shops who currently must learn the art of clutching to harness additional power, not to mention deal with the “weak-link” of blown belts and excessive heat build-up when power nears or exceeds the 200 mark. It seems unlikely the manual transmission will once again become the dominant choice in the off-road category, but then again, few gave the CVT a chance of survival either. As the manufacturers jockey for position, and those who are looking up at Polaris search for ways to grab a piece of the pie, the Yamaha YXZ could possibly be the “shift” they’ve been looking for. J

The 1985 Polaris Trail Boss helped introduce the off-road world to the smooth and easy to operate traits of the constant velocity transmission.

Carlo Paladino Motovan

Grit, determination, ambition and vision best describe Motovan founder and owner Carlo Paladino. A dedicated family man, Carlo immigrated to Canada in 1961 from Italy and worked many odd jobs while providing for his family including janitor for Louis Quilicot, a company that imported Vespa scooters. He rose through the ranks to eventually become general manager. Despite his hard earned success, Carlo still dreamed of one day owning his own company, and when the Quilicot Company eventually changed ownership, Carlo knew it was time to make a move and take the first step towards his lifelong dream. He started off small, selling clothing and accessories for the motorsports industry from his basement. He called the company Motovan, a reflection of his dream of one day owning a company with offices in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Long hours and hard work led to incredible growth, expanding from his basement to larger and larger buildings. Fast forward 35 years later, and Motovan is presently working from a 250,000 square foot space based in Boucherville with warehouses in Edmonton, Alberta and sales offices in London, Ontario. Motovan currently has over 200 employees across Canada, and has recently expanded to the US with sales offices and warehouses in Louisiana, Ohio, South Carolina and California. Carlo is presently enjoying himself as the head of research and development, while his two sons James and Michael are now touting the titles of company president and vice president, respectively. At 75 years of age, Carlo continues his unrelenting drive, yet we slowed him down just long enough to get his Last Turn words on his life, his success and Motovan.

Last ATV/UTV ride you took?

Last year we went for a ride in St-Hyacinthe, Quebec for some product testing with a Polaris RZR. Getting out and enjoying time on the trails on a beautiful day is always a rewarding aspect of the job.

Last band or musician you saw in concert?

I love concerts! The last time I saw a concert, I went to see Andrea Boccelli in Florida a few years ago. He was fantastic to hear in person.

Last thing your mother always told you to do? Always believe in yourself and never lose courage, no matter how bad things are. You can always be better and can get over any bad thing that happens to you, as long as you believe in yourself

Last thing you raced?

Last time I raced was about 50 years ago! I raced an MV Agusta at a track in Italy near my hometown.

Last trip you took out of the country?

Last thing you questioned putting in your mouth?

I went to Las Vegas a few weeks ago for a Motovan event. It was also our (my wife’s and I) 52nd wedding anniversary, and we took some time to enjoy ourselves in the beautiful city of Las Vegas.

I was in China and they wanted me to try a specialty fish called Abalone, and to be polite I tried it, but as soon as I put it in my mouth I regretted it.

Last thing you never expected Motovan to do but is now successful with?

Last time you drove over 100mph?

I rode a Suzuki Hayabusa about four years ago and wanted to see how fast I could go. The bike is amazingly fast and eclipsing 100mph happens quickly.

When I started Motovan in the basement of our home, I never thought it would become what it is today. Even though it was always my dream, I never thought I would have been able to develop my own line of products such as we did with Quadrax and Zox helmets. We are now very successful with these brands, among others, and I am happy I was able to pursue my dream.

Someone or something that has made a lasting impression on you?

The iPhone and new electronics in general still impress me every time I see one or use one. I was born at a time where none of these things existed, and I never thought I would see something like this, which is why it still impresses me every time.

Last place on earth you’d like to ride?

Last time you were embarrassed?

The Sahara Desert would be somewhere I would love and hate to ride. It must be something impressive riding there, but at the same time it must be very difficult.

Last near death experience?

Working late on catalogs one year, we were behind schedule and I was staying up late,

finalizing some pages. When I left to go home, I fell asleep in the car while I was driving. Thankfully, I was waiting at a light when my foot left the brake pedal and I hit the car in front of me. It really scared me as I was about to get on the highway, and if I would have fallen asleep there, I could have hurt myself or someone else very badly.

Seven years ago I forgot our wedding anniversary, and when I realized I forgot about it I was embarrassed because my wife means the world to me, and I cannot believe I would forget something that important.

Lasting off-road memory?

Last year we went to test some snow helmets, and we did a full day of snowmobiling up in the Laurentian Mountains. It was very cold, but we had a great day.

Last project or product at Motovan that had you positively excited? I am really excited about the last Zox Helmets we developed that are made from carbon fiber. I think these helmets are the best we’ve ever produced, and I’m excited to see the response we get from our dealers and consumers.

Last thing you read?

The last book I read was about the Italian Mafia. I can’t remember the name, but it was the history of the Mafia in Italy.

Last thing you’d like to be remembered for? I want people to remember that I was a good man and I loved people. I always loved what I was doing and was honest with everyone. I worked hard and hoped that my hard work would pay off.

Last thing you’d bring with you on a deserted island?

I would bring a blanket with me in case it would get cold at night. When I was younger I would have probably had a different answer, but now I say I would bring a blanket in case it rains or it gets cold.

Last time you laughed so hard you nearly wet your pants? I went to see a French Canadian Comic called Jean-Marc Parent, and he was very funny.

Last ATV or Side-by-side you drove that blew your mind?

The RZR ride I went on last year was awesome. We drove around on some pretty nice trails and we had a great time.

Last words of advice?

Always respect yourself and others. That is the most important advice I can give someone. If you give and have respect, good things will come your way, even when it seems like everything is stacked against you.
