WORKING HARD OR HARDLY WORKING?

It’s

that time of year when you can’t help but drag your feet a little... winter months can really take a toll on you, and your productivity. That’s only if you are not in the ATV/UTV magazine business. We have a lot of great editorials and features for you in this issue. We’ve stayed focused and pounded out another great issue for you. In this issue 9.1, we’re hitting the track hard with a build around the new Polaris RZR XP 900 four seater side-by-side, out in Parker, AZ., and we take a look at the new 2012 Kawasaki Teryx 4 750 UTV and think wow - how the industry has evolved! We’d like to say thank you to all of our advertisers and readers, all helping us to exceed to six issues annually. We have not only increased ATV World Magazine to six issues, but we’re available on ISSUU.com,

and now Zinio.com. That’s the best value on the market today. In order to accomplish our goal of bringing more issues to you, we have added more key components to our team, maxing out our work ethic, and producing the industry’s top ATV magazine on the market today. We recently sunk our hooks into longtime lover of all things outdoors, and heavy ATV enthusiast Matt Clark. And we’ve brought aboard Mr. Kyle Carruthers, aka: KC and the Sunshine Band of DMX. These guys are key to our expansion and to the dynamic of our office. Yes, these guys can ride. We are vastly expanding and more importantly, improving our Team of Nick Nelson, Pat Bourgeois and Randy Hall, who all add to ATV World Magazine with their columns and feature editorials. By pulling everyone in, and creating a team of such magnitude –

the atmosphere is amazing and the diversity is incredible, as each of us bring our own skills and strengths to each and every issue. Spring is here and we’ve expanded the magazine, and are excited to have done so. More importantly, we’re looking forward to getting a little sunshine and spinning some mud again in the frozen land; fortunately, this is something Nick doesn’t have to worry about. Over the year, as issues hit the newsstands, plans are underway to add new columns and editorial ideas to the mix, and we really hope you enjoy them. Remember to ride safe and wear the appropriate gear this season, as we have more plans for you for 2012. ATV World is going to continue to grow and be the leading ATV publication! So, until next time, I’ll be getting dirty on the trail and testing out the new power washer. Have fun and get dirty this spring!

CAN-AM'S EARN PODIUMS AT 2012 DAKAR BRP's Can-Am ATV and side-by-side teams reached their respective class podiums in the 34th edition of the most famous rally in the world, the Dakar Rally. This year's edition, noted by some as "the most challenging Dakar thus far," kicked off in Mar del Plata-Argentina, leading 30 hopeful ATV racers through approximately 9,000 kilometers (5,592 miles) of unparalleled terrains across Argentina, Chile, and finally, Peru. Only 11 teams crossed the coveted finish line; among them BRP racers Daniel Mazzucco, Barry Cruces and Petar Cenkov, (Team Rally Raid / Can-Am) who finished first, second and third in the 4x4 Quad category. The sport driven Can Am Renegade 4X4 proved to be the 4X4 ATV of choice, as well as the one to beat for the world's toughest and longest off-road race. The 2012 Dakar will forever leave its mark on the side-by-side racing segment. Ten side-by-side vehicles attempted to conquer the Dakar, but only three reached the finish line in Peru. Team Nextel by Can-Am racers, and Dakar side-by-side racing pioneers, Claudio Hidalgo and Claudio Troncoso, second and third respectively, tested their off-road racing skills in the grueling terrain, in Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicles.

Contest winners Tammy Persing, Gavin Goodwin and William Hampton entered the essay contest, explaining what winning a Polaris Ranger RZR would do for them and their families. The essays touched on the ability to enjoy life with their families, being more adventuresome, and freedom away from hospitals and post war challenges they have endured. The "Phantom 4 RZRs were special, blacked out pre models that were used for development and to drive media hype, previous to the units launch. Polaris Defense surprised everyone in attendance by upping the ante with $5000 worth of gear and accessories to outfit their new vehicles. POLARIS went on to say."It was our pleasure to donate the Phantom 4s to such a wonderful organization. These individuals have made a great sacrifice for our freedom, and we hope these vehicles bring joy to them and their families."

Mess Free Foam Filter Service Use a one gallon zip lock bag to evenly distribute filter oil through a foam filter. The bag can be sealed with the excess oil in it for next time, saving money and hassle.

Smooth Operation For the best performance, suspension pins and bushings need to be inspected regularly for corrosion and wear. Corrosion can be cleaned up with emery cloth, but worn pins should be replaced.

Groovy Maintenence Snap ring grooves can take a beating, so be sure to remove all burrs, corrosion and debris with emery cloth before reusing them. 26

TIPS & TRICKS

Built in Ring Compressor When rebuilding a four stroke top end, you can install the piston with rings into the cylinder before attaching it to the rod. Install the circlip on the timing chain side of the piston first, and then slide the piston into cylinder, right to the point of hitting the pin. Use a rag in the crankcase to keep from losing the other circlip as you attach the piston/cylinder.

Latex Gloves Cut the Cold Try using a pair of cheap latex gloves as a liner for your riding gloves in extreme cold. They do a great job of cutting the freezing wind and they take up virtually no space. You can even pack some along with you in a pack or on your quad.

Cooking Oil Keeps Dust Out

Clean Filters From the Inside

A light coating of cooking oil in the outside of your goggle foam will catch dust particles the same way foam filter oil works on your air filter.

When servicing air filters, be sure to wash the dirt from the inside out. Hot water works better than cold, and the proper filter cleaning solvent makes the job a snap.

APPRENTICESHIP A HANDS-ON EDUCATION Photos courtesy of Steve Newman - Canadore College

Students working towards their Small Engine Technician Certification at Trade School. Most trade schools will have late model equipment and up to date electronic diagnostics tools.

someone were to ask me why I became a mechanic, I would have to answer that I don’t really know. I honestly don’t remember making a specific decision to go down that career path, it just sort of happened. What I do know is that I can’t remember when I wasn’t tinkering in my Dad’s workshop, either taking something apart or trying to put it back together. I still enjoy tinkering today in my own shop, especially now that I know what I am doing; for the most part anyway. The reason I am sharing this walk down memory lane with you is that in this issue, I would like to bring your attention to how apprenticeship works and the need for professional technicians; not only in Ontario, but across this great land of ours as well. Apprenticeship basically means that you learn your career of choice by doing the job, while under the guidance of an experienced person in the same profession. It also means that you earn (a wage) while you learn. When compared to going to college or university full time, where you pay to learn, it makes for an attractive alternative in career training. Depending on the province you live in, there are also financial incentives in the form of grants. The following, hypothetical apprenticeship scenario to become an ATV Techni-

cian, should give you a better understanding on how the process works. I would also like to mention at this time that all the trades are finding more women taking on an apprenticeship. So ladies, if you are a hands-on person, please take a look at the opportunities available. The first thing required to become an apprentice is to find a job in the industry that you want to become a technician in. In this case, a recreational motorsports repair shop. When applying for employment, you need to make sure there is someone licensed at the business that you can apprentice under. Once hired, you would contact the local apprenticeship office, and a Training Consultant from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities will come to your place of employment and have a contract signed between you, your employer, and the MTCU. Although the word “contract” may sound binding, it is primarily an agreement between the three stakeholders, outlining what each is responsible for. Your Training Consultant will outline what will be required for you to become a certified (licensed) technician. This will most likely include an approximate time frame to complete your apprenticeship, where you will go for the in-school portion of your apprenticeship training, and how to fill out your Apprenticeship Training

Standards booklet. This booklet is like a journal that will keep track of the practical skills completed during your work at the shop. The approximate time frame varies between the different professions. A fair comparison would be - to become a Small Engine Technician may be around 2 years, while becoming an Automotive Service Technician could take 3 to 4 years. Translated into hours - that is 2000 hours per year. The in-school requirements will also be different. For example, a Small Engine Technician will go to trade school two times during the apprenticeship period, while an Automotive Service Technician will go three times. Most of the trade schooling costs are covered by the government. Usually a tax deductible fee of around $400.00 is all that is required for tuition per session. Each session is approximately 240 hrs. You usually can attend trade school in two or three different ways. The first way is an eight week block of 30 hrs. per week, over 5 days. During this time, you are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits, and possibly some living and travelling

While at Trade School all vehicles systems are covered. Here the student is completing a practical jobsheet that is specific to this type of engine design.

expenses. The second way is called “day release, which is one day a week for 40 weeks. This allows you to stay working, and is popular among employers. The third way is not always available, but is delivered over two evenings a week over a 40 week period, thereby not interrupting your daily employment. Your training consultant will be able to advise you as to what is available in your region. Now, depending on your previous experience, the MTCU provides Exemption Tests (at a nominal cost) at testing centers across the province. You can write this exam to allow you to be exempted from going to trade school for a specific session. This helps you go through the apprenticeship training period a little faster. There are financial grants available in certain that work like this: After completing and passing an in-school session, you apply to the federal government and you can receive $1000.00. After completing all your school training and successfully write your Certificate of Qualification Exam, you can receive a $2000.00 grant. If you find that you are having difficulty in getting a job as an apprentice, due to lack of experience, there are a couple of

things you can do. First, see what courses are being offered at the local college that could increase your skill set that the employer may be looking for. Second, check at the local employment office to see if there are any government programs, whereby a potential employer could receive funding for training you. The Government of Canada has identified that there is a need for qualified technicians in all the trade sectors. Working for a college in the apprenticeship programs, I can attest to the fact that my colleagues and I are always receiving calls from employers, looking for apprentices and technicians. If you are interested in an apprenticeship, do your research. Are there jobs currently available where you want to work? See if employers are hiring, and what they are looking for in an employee. Visit your local apprenticeship if you can and talk to a training consultant. Find out which apprenticeship fits the trade you are interested in. For example, there is no ATV Technician certification in Ontario, so you may want to become a Small Engine Technician, or if you are working at a shop that sells motorcycles, become a Motorcycle Technician - The choice is yours. âœŞ

More and more ladies are finding themselves looking towards profession careers in the trades. With electronic systems constantly changing it is important that technicians know how trouble shoot circuits with electronic service tools.

Although not as high tech as some of the electronic systems on today’s vehicles, the critical foundation systems such as brakes need to be completely understood in order to be properly maintained. In this picture the student is removing a wheel with the assistance of an air wrench to gain access to the drum brakes. She then will perform a hands-on procedure of replacing the brake shoes.

HOW AXLE REBUILD

If you log enough hours on an IRS ATV, wearing out or breaking CV axles, joints or boots is one of those things that is bound to happen. While it is not a fun chore, it's not rocket science, and I'm sure that most of you could take it on with minimal patience and a decent set of hand tools. Replacing dry, cracked or torn CV boots is the most common example of this job, as the rubber boots tend to dry up with age and exposure to the elements. A torn boot will quickly leak the grease out and dirty contaminants will get in, prematurely wearing out the CV Joint. We will show you in detail the process for replacing a torn CV boot on a rear Rhino axle. This same process will be used to replace a broken axle or CV; you will just need to sub in the new parts when the axle is disassembled. We demonstrated this on a Yamaha Rhino rear axle, but it is very similar on any IRS rear axle or front 4wd axle. The major difference lies in the process and tools required to remove the culprit axle from the ATV or UTV. Please check out EPI Performance for replacement boot kits, CV rebuild kits, or even replacement CV axles "wheel shafts". They have all the parts and tools you could need to fix your CV problems, in stock and ready to ship. www.erlandsonperformance.com

How-To with ATV WORLD

1

REMOVE THE AXLE ASSEMBLY

PREP THE AREA

The first and sometimes most difficult step is to remove the culprit axle assembly. Start with a clean machine to avoid dirt entering rear end. Revert to your manual, but typically you will need to remove outer axle nut, then remove the hub and spindle assembly. With the outer spindle/hub out of the way, you should be able to yank the axle/CV out of the rear end housing. It might take 2-3 popping motion pulls.

Line a large flat bench or floor space with rags or towels as it will get a little messy. Wearing rubber gloves, cut the CV boot bands off both sides of the boot or CV that you will be replacing. As most CV boot kits come with both the inner and outer, we suggest that you replace both boots if you are already disassembling the axle.

3

36

2

4

SLIDE THE BOOTS OFF

REMOVE INSIDE CV

Slide the boots back off of the CV and toward the middle of the axle. This may require a little prying with a small flat blade screwdriver to loosen the boot from the CV. Use a rag to wipe away as much excess grease as you can at this point.

If you are replacing the axle or inside CV, then you will need to remove it as shown in step 4-7. If not, you can skip to removing the outer CV and replace both boots from that end. Use a small pick or flat blade to remove the retainer cir clip from the CV joint.

Acquire the following supplies before starting this project: Tools required to remove complete axle from ATV. Service manual is very handy to aid in axle removal Lots of rags and brake parts, cleaner and trash can Rubber gloves Rubber or brass dead blow hammer Large vise - not required but handy

KEEP IT ORGANIZED

56

REMOVE THE CIR CLIP

Be sure to clean and lay out everything you remove in the correct order. Remove the axle and race from the inner axle stub, and wipe away the grease.

INSPECT FOR DAMAGE

Razor Knife/Dikes Flat blade screwdriver Grease gun CV clamp banding tool - available from EPI Performance EPI boot replacement kit and/or whatever else is broken

Use cir clip pliers to carefully remove the cir clip that retains the CV race onto the axle. Remove the axle from the bearing. Clean all parts and keep them in the correct order.

78

If your axles were loud, loose, clicky or noisy, then this is the time to inspect the inner CV for damage. Use a screwdriver to rotate the center splined piece enough to remove the ball bearings, one at a time. Clean and inspect all surfaces for cracks, or pitting. Grease and reassemble the race if it has no issues, or replace any damaged parts.

REMOVE THE OUTER AXLE STUB

Removing the outer axle stub: With our inner removed, we could use a hole cutout in the workbench for disassembly. If you are leaving your inner assembly on the axle, use the open jaws of a large bench vise against the housing in the same manner. You are compressing a cir clip enough to pull it through the housing. If you don't have a vise, this can be done with a hammer against the housing. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE

HOW AXLE REBUILD

9

REPLACE THE CIR CLIP IF NEEDED

GREASE IT

This is the cir clip you were popping through the housing. If it is damaged, you should replace it. In a pinch, you can close a slightly loose one by removing it from the axle and pinching it shut in a vise. Clean the axle thoroughly.

Pack the clean axle stub full of fresh CV grease - the proper grease will be supplied with the new boots. Slide both CV boots onto the axle in the correct direction. They are usually different from inner to outer, so be sure to get them orientated in the right way.

11

REMOVE THE BOOTS AND CLIP With the boots and the clip installed on the axle, use a screwdriver to align and compress the clip properly into the axle housing. You might be able to push the axle in with the screwdriver working the clip, but you will probably need to drive it in.

38

10

âœŞ

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE

12

DRIVE AXLE INTO HOUSING With the axle stub housing held in a table hole or vise, use a dead blow hammer to drive the clipped axle into its housing. If you don't have a vise, you may want a friend to help you hold the axle so that you can drive the housing onto it; the opposite of how we did it in the photo. The axle will clip securely into the axle housing.

13

14

INSTALL THE JOINT

SLIDE AXLE INTO HOUSING

If you removed the inner CV, flip the axle over and install the freshly greased joint onto the axle. Slide the joint all the way onto the axle so that you expose the groove for the cir clip. Use cir clip pliers to install the retainer cir clip.

Pack the inner housing full of fresh grease, and then slide the axle with joint into the housing. You will need to align the ball bearings with their respective grooves. Install the retainer cir clip, making sure that it seats into its groove.

15 16 PUT BOOTS INTO PLACE

INSTALL TO MACHINE

Pack both boots with additional grease and then slide into place. This can be a tight fit and might require a little bit of force. Try to keep the outer housing and inner flange clean and free of excessive grease. Use the EPI banding tool or most any automotive band tool to tightly install the boot bands. We have seen hose clamps used for this, but it is a temporary fix. If you’re taking the time to do this, get the tool and do it right.

Install the freshly rebuilt CV into your machine. It will take a little pop or force to get the inner stub to seat into the rear end. Install the spindle and hub onto the outer axle end and reattach to the A arms. Torque the outer axle nut to factory specs, and be sure to peen in any retainer in the nut.

DOUBLE THE

FUN(CTION) 2012 KAWASAKI TERYX 4 BY NICK NELSON

WITH THE UTV MARKET EXPLODING OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, THE KAWASAKI TERYX HAS FOUND IT'S PLACE AMONG THE BEST ALL AROUND SPORT SIDE BY SIDES.

W

ith the UTV market exploding over the last few years, the Kawasaki Teryx has found its place among the best all around, sport side by sides. With a huge influence from the family off-roading market, creating four-seat conversions of the Teryx, Rhino and Rangers has become increasingly popular. The incredibly capable RZR 4 quickly proved that a UTV developed for four passengers from the factory would handle much better than a two seater with extra seats and a cage. After seeing this success, it was only a matter of time before Kawasaki would double the Teryx’s fun and function factor with two more seats. The new 2012 Teryx 4 750 comes with enough room for more friends, more help, or the whole family. Not satisfied with just bolting two extra seats to the Teryx 750’s chassis, 40

2012 KAWASAKI TERYX 4

Kawasaki engineers figured out exactly what was needed to complete their 4 seat RUV concept the right way. The Teryx 4 is redesigned from the ground up with an all new chassis and reworked v-twin engine that pumps out 15% more power. This four seat Teryx RUV is designed to appeal to families wanting to experience off-roading in one vehicle, hunters that will carry their friends, or the first time buyer who wants four seats. Aimed at a buyer who is between 35-55, the Teryx 4 will entice the experienced, as well as complete newbie buyer. The foundation for a top-tier RUV with seating for four, starts at the frame. The Teryx 4 features Double-X frame design with two x shaped cross members, bridging the box structures from corner to corner. The Double-X frame is designed to provide superior rigidity and minimal Torsional flex, when compared to a conventional UTV chassis. The ROPS or "Roll Over Protective Structure" is engineered for optimum strength, and features an exo-skeleton type design to protect bodywork from damage. Kawasaki engineers also put a lot of thought into unique chassis dimensions for the Teryx 4. With an 85.7 wheelbase, the Teryx 4 is relatively short in comparison to other four seat RUVs. This shorter wheelbase is used to provide a smaller turning radius, and enhance the ability to climb over obstacles that would ground a longer vehicle. Nearly 11 inches of ground clearance, as well as high approach and departure angles all helps with steep slopes, ridges or obstacles. All these chassis design features help to improve the 4's functionality on tight trails. The new Teryx 4 features revised camshaft profiles and equal length exhaust headers to create an additional

15% power increase to the already stellar, v-twin powerplant. Adequate room for equal length exhaust headers was another cool bonus of the extended Teryx 4 chassis. The 90 degree twin is already known for instantaneous and controllable low to midrange power that still comes alive on the top end when opened up. Cam profiles were developed to give the Teryx 4 the power to set the driver back in his seat when driven solo, yet make plenty of torque to carry four full-size adults over, or through whatever obstacles you might encounter. The newly revised motor is fed with an updated EFI system featuring new, fineatomizing 12 hole injectors, developed for easier starts and perfect throttle response, from sea level to the mountain tops. The EFI system features automatic mixture

THE POWER TO SET THE DRIVER BACK IN HIS SEAT compensation, idle adjustment, and easychoke free starting through sensors that monitor inlet air pressure, throttle and crankshaft position, rpm and coolant temperature. The Teryx 4 uses a Continuously Variable Transmission, with a categoryfirst centrifugal clutch assembly to harness all its usable power, and route it to the ground through Maxxis Bighorn tires. direct engine feel in sport riding situations. Where the Teryx 4’s dual-mode personality differs from the masses, is that the categoryfirst centrifugal clutch offers extra precision, slow speed power delivery. This controllable low end power is ideal for rock crawling or slow speed work situations, where precise throttle control is a must. Kawasaki uses an oil bathed clutch design that also helps to improve CVT belt life by lessening shock and belt deflection. The Teryx 4 suspension was developed to provide a comfortable ride with the four passengers, yet perform like a sport UTV when driven with only a driver or single passenger. The Limited Edition model comes with fully adjustable piggyback shocks all the way around, yet the standard model only has them on the rear, with cheaper gas charged, preload adjustable ones on the front.

The Teryx 4 is designed to be the most comfortable Side X Side in its class. The Teryx 4's roomy interior gives the driver and all three passengers the same amount of room. Larger riders will find plenty of hip, shoulder and legroom, regardless of which seat they choose. The Teryx 4 also has ample cargo space to carry along any necessary supplies. High-backed bolstered bucket seats and three point seatbelts will keep riders comfortable and secure. Driver seat is adjustable, and the rear seats are mounted slightly higher than the fronts for improved view and ease of entry. Passenger conveniences, like front and rear anti-spill cup holders and 12 volt accessory plugs come stock, and there are loads of Kawasaki accessories. The final major option on the Teryx 4 is the big one! You can get into a brand new Teryx 4 for as little as $15,499. For an additional

grand, you get Kawasaki's Electronic Power Steering. The EPS model gets rid of negative steering wheel kickback, and lightens steering immensely. The EPS system monitors vehicle speed to determine how much assistance the driver needs to keep optimum control. What's It Like to Drive Kawasaki chose Brimstone Recreation Park in Tennessee to debut the Teryx 4 to the press. Brimstone has hundreds of miles of awesome trails that are both technical and scenic. It’s quite possibly the perfect place for testing a new UTV and capturing epic images at the same time. Brimstone's tight wooded trails, deep water crossings and nasty rutted hill climbs have proven a challenge for even the best two-seat UTVs on the market. Kawasaki's decision to reveal its new fourseater on these trails showed true confidence in the new machine’s extreme trail capability. As you first climb into the Teryx 4, you realize that Kawasaki did a great job of hitting their goal in the seating department. All four seats feature a roomy, comfortable feel, and rear doors allow easy access. Even at 6 feet tall, there is plenty of leg and shoulder room in the back seat as well as the front. Once buckled in the driver’s seat, the controls are easily within reach. With most of the day spent driving the EPS model, driving solo, with one passenger or with three passengers, the Teryx 4 EPS was easy to maneuver. Even in tight situations, you never wished you were in a two-seat model. The EPS was incredible at lower speeds, from turning 44

around in the parking lot to navigating rocky stream beds and trails. Negative feedback to the steering wheel is non-

existent and the Teryx 4 remains easy to control for hours at a time. We drove a non EPS unit back to back with the EPS model for comparison. Driving the non EPS was definite reassurance that the EPS is worth the extra 1000 dollars. The Kawasaki EPS system is designed to provide less assistance at higher speeds, when you don’t need it. This is the one area I felt could use a little adjustment. At higher speeds, the steering still felt really light for my experience. For the control factor, I would like to see even less, or maybe no assistance at all when driving at higher speeds. I imagine the reason it still assists at higher speeds is to control negative feedback, but the non-EPS unit just felt a little more in control on the faster fire roads. Overall, the pros of the EPS greatly outweighed the slightly loose feeling at speed, and I would still quickly opt for the EPS model, even if it were more than the 1000 dollars it costs. Deep stream crossings were no match for the Teryx. Claiming a 23.6 inch water forging limit, we were able to easily cross

Servicing the Teryx 4 is a snap with handy features like tool free air filter removal.

streams that were close to two feet deep. The stock Maxxis tires grabbed plenty of traction, even when at the bottom of a river or stream. Even more impressive was the body, fender and floor board’s ability to keep the mud and water on the outside, leaving your feet dry and comfortable. The Teryx 4 was right at home climbing steep terrain, even while loaded down with three extra passengers. In low range, the

Teryx 4 will climb just about anything. With its ability to grab traction, and the ton of torque that the v twin produces, it keeps on pulling when you need it. The relatively short wheelbase for a four seater helps to keep the turning radius to a minimum, and it can actually be turned around on the trail much easier than you would think. Hammering around tight trails is where the Teryx 4 really shines.

The Teryx 4 waterproof trunk with sliding cooler is probably one of the coolest accessories we've seen in a long time.

Bombing around the technical wooded trails of Brimstone was a blast in the Teryx 4, and I'm sure it will be a crowd favorite among trail systems, all around the world. The Teryx 4 would have its hands full, trying to keep up with a RZR 4 in the wide open deserts of the west coast, but I honestly believe that the tables might be turned if any other four seater to date was trying to keep up with the Teryx 4 in the tight woods of the east coast. It’s an all around UTV, capable of comfortably hauling four adults, and plenty of space to haul the gear. RAISING THE BAR BY NICK NELSON

POLARIS HAS RAISED THE BAR AGAIN, ANSWERING TO THE UTV WORLD'S PLEADING REQUESTS FOR A 4 SEAT VERSION OF THE RZR XP 900.

2012 RZR XP 4 900

F

or the first weekend of the new year, Polaris invited us out to Parker, AZ to watch the opening round of Best in The Desert Parker 250 race, and to get our first experience with the highly anticipated RZR XP 4 900. Polaris debuted their new XP 4, entering a Jagged X built racer in the Sportsman UTV class. The Jagged X build was kept as stock as possible, while meeting BITD’s strict safety regulations and restrictions. The Jagged X build includes everything needed to be competitive/legal right down to the radios, GPS, etc., and is available at a very obtainable kit price with a retail of 10K. The Jagged X drivers managed to keep the new 4 seater in a top three position overall for nearly half the race, before a flat tire dropped them out of contention for the win. Even after miles of driving on a flat, the Jagged XP4 finished a respectable 3rd in the sportsman UTV class and tenth overall.

While most of the other editors were hanging out watching the racers beat themselves through the rugged 250 mile course, I decided to take it a few steps further. I decided to enter ATV World test rider Beau Baron and myself in the Pro ATV class. The course proved to be brutally rough and was sure to be a great test of the XP 4's suspension and handling characteristics. We pulled off a 2nd place finish which is a great way to start off the BITD season. With the stresses of the race out of the way, we were able to relax on Sunday with growing anticipation for Monday's XP 4 ride day. Sunday night, Polaris had a release party and technical presentation at the ride spot location, with our first hands-on look at the stock XP 4 and XP 4 LE performance UTVs. The new RZR XP 4 900 features the same 88 HP Pro Star Engine as the 2 seater, as well as the 3 link trailing arm rear suspension kit with 12.5"s of ground clearance and 14 inches of wheel travel. Where the new XP 4 900 differs is by coming standard with new Premium Walker Evans shocks. The rear shocks feature an industry first, 2.5" body and look absolutely massive. Monday morning we arrived early a.m. at the ride site for a safety presentation and our first hands-on XP 4 experience. The first ride was an organized trail ride, featuring twenty miles of the brutal Parker race course as well as the less abusive Cienega Springs trail through a scenic 1800s mining area. Polaris had brought out EPS equipped LE models for all the media to drive, and the EPS proved to be a huge asset as we found ourselves navigating up a very rocky riverbed in the first few miles of our ride. As the ride continued, I really got comfortable with the new, longer XP 4 and started to push it harder. The power

steering is amazing, as is the additional wheelbase. The longer wheelbase really helps the RZR XP 4 in the whoops. The new 4 seat XP is every bit as capable as the whoop swallowing 2 seat version; if not, even better. We tried driving and riding the RZR XP 4 solo, as well as with one, two and three passengers. The car is a blast to drive solo or with a passenger; with the rear seats empty, you hardly even realize that you’re not in a 2 seater. Even with the additional 200 pounds, the

RZR XP 4900 fill them with two more friends, family, etc. With four passengers in the XP 4, it is still a blast to drive. While you definitely know that you are carrying some extra weight, the XP4 does an amazing job as the performance family wagon. The 900 Prostar engine still churns out plenty of power to rip through sand dunes, climb hills, and blast up sand washes. Exploring the small dune area next to our ride area proved that the RZR XP 4 was a capable flier, even with a full load of passengers. After prying the steering wheel out of my hands, I decided to experience a back seat ride. The back seats are the same comfortable buckets that you find in the front. While there was sufficient leg room for my 6 foot 200 pound frame, if you were much taller you would probably find yourself fighting for a front

seat. Luckily, if you’re that big you probably won't find many people wanting to wrestle you for it. The back seat features a full length grab bar that is always within reach for safety, and you even get your own cup holders and 12 volt accessory plug. As we found ourselves back on the incredibly rough Parker 250 course, I did find a slight shortcoming. While the XP 4 is designed and ready to take on extremely rough terrain, the set up on the very impressive looking new shocks seems to be a little less than perfect. While driver preference could drastically affect this opinion, the new Walker Evan front shocks seemed to exhibit a little harsher ride than the FOX boingers found on the XP 2 seater. Even more noticeable was the rear shocks tendency to blow through the travel, bottoming out when hitting g outs or square edged

The rear of the XP 4 features the same comfortable bucket seats that you find in the 2 seat models, leg room is however slightly limited. Riders much over 6 foot might be happier in the front seat. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE

bumps after they get hot. This bottoming was only evident after the oil heated up from abusive use, but it was even noticeable without the extra weight of rear passengers. While not everyone complained or even noticed this shock trait, it was more evident the harder you pushed the car. While the average RZR XP 4 owner may never push their car that hard, if it does become an issue, the Walker Evans shocks are completely adjustable and rebuildable. While we have not yet tried to have our Walker Evans shocks revalved, I have personally tested the XP 4 900 with a set of ELKA shocks, and they were plusher up front and bottoming was not an issue with the rear. As we mentioned before, the longer 107.4" wheelbase improves handling in the whoops, making it an awesome desert car. The XP 4 still has an industry leading 12.5 inches of ground clearance, but you will notice that the longer wheelbase makes it much more susceptible to casing out over steep transitions such as curbs or the top of a steep climb. This is purely due to the amount of space between the front and rear tires, and is just something to get used to when driving the new, longer four seater. The 64" wide stance and low center of gravity allow the XP 4 to

be unbelievably stable in the turns. Very little body roll and Polaris sway bars allow for very aggressive turning. We could hammer the four seat version hard into a corner with the same confidence as if we were in the 2 seat version. While obviously, the longer wheelbase will create

I might even go as far as saying that I'm interested in testing its turning radius against the new 2 seat Wildcat from Arctic Cat, as I think it might be pretty close. After our trail session was over, I tried out the standard non EPS XP 4 900 for comparison sake. While you may not realize how well the EPS works while you are driving it, you immediately miss it

when it’s not there. A twenty minute loop in the non EPS model was probably as tiring as our entire morning ride in the EPS equipped model. In my opinion, if you are in the market for one of these new machines, I wouldn't scrimp on the EPS. It is definitely worth the extra dough. As a four seat adventure buggy, the XP 4 900 is proving to be pretty amazing, with plenty of power, and capable of getting you anywhere you want to go. We

have had our test unit at home for close to a month now, and with over 500 trouble free miles on it, I have nothing but props to give Polaris. In my opinion, the XP 4 handles like a 60k off-road buggy but meets the needs of the masses with a price tag of less than 20k. The XP 4 900 will prove to be an amazing UTV for anyone that purchases one, and I'm sure that Polaris will sell a ton of them. ✪

STI TIRES

BY KYLE CARRUTHERS

An ATV, or “All-Terrain Vehicle”, is a vehicle designed to go anywhere, anytime in all terrains.

D

esigned to tackle sand, snow, mud, water and even rock; they’re tough, but your ATV is only as good as the tires you put on it. Lately, we’re beginning to see more of the bigger ATVs on the showroom floors, equipped with some pretty serious and well-known brand name tires. These topnotch tires usually come with the bigger packages, which are followed by the higher price tag. Upgrading your tires can be one of the most important upgrades you do, and one that we at ATV World highly recommend. Upgrading your ATV Tires can, and will change your riding experience. When our 2012 Can-Am Outlander 1000 showed up at our shop, we decided it needed a little facelift. After all, it had a mighty 1000cc Rotax in it, and plenty of power to turn any tire and wheel combo we could throw at it. One call to the boys at STI Tire and Wheel and we were hooked up immediately with a new set of HD2 Matte Black wheels, with a set of 27 x 9 x R12 Black Diamond Tires for the front, and another set of 27 x 11 xR12 for the rear! Our rims showed up with the tires already mounted on them, and after talking to a few dealers that had mounted STI Tires in the past, we heard only positive feedback. To all of the ‘do it yourself’ readers; the Black Diamonds will be a welcoming option for your ATV and your fingers. STI puts a lot of

56

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE

pride into the manufacturing of these tires. With an impressive lug size and design, along with a great design on the sidewalls, these are the kind of tires you can put on your ATV and feel good about it. The Black Diamond is now available in two models and more than 30 sizes. The Black Diamond ATR features a ¾-inch tread lug, while the Black Diamond XTR utilizes a more aggressive 1 1/8-inch lug depth. We personally tested the 1 1/8 inch lug, and easily give these tires a 10/10 on appearance. After taking the stock wheels off and replacing them with our STI Combo, we put 7psi into each tire as recommend by STI, (12 psi for UTV) and with much anticipation, we were ready to take this baby for a ride! The Black Diamond tire features an innovative “V” tread pattern that bridges the gap between soft mud/snow and hard packed conditions. Luckily for us, we were able to test them in all of the above! We know that not everyone rides in all of these conditions, and like any tire, there are definitely a few things the STI Black Diamonds do better than others. But after all was said and done, it was safe to say that most of us ATV World test riders walked away from the day with a smile. Starting with the local sand dunes, we had no problem getting the tires to grip

and hook up while climbing some of the largest hills we have seen in South Western Ontario. We tested this set up side-by-side with a friend who runs a CanAm 1000, also with the stock wheel package, and we had no problem walking all over him as he tried to play catch up. Now it’s no surprise that most aftermarket tires excel in these conditions, but what kept us at ease was how predictable the

Black Diamonds were, when going into corners. With little tire roll happening, we had no problem cornering the heavy CanAm 1000 like a sports quad. Into the mud we went, or should I say, a pond with thick clay at the bottom to be exact. I had water over the seat, and still the Black Diamonds hooked up fierce and quick. After conquering a mud hole and hitting dry ground, be careful to let off the throttle, since these bad boys hook up well, even when wet! We found this out the hard way as I hooked up immediately after leaving the water, and had all 1000cc roaring to life as I left the thick mud. We loved how quick the tires cleaned themselves out. One quick burp of the throttle and the mud was already falling out of the tread, and we got back to that great feeling of the plush ride the Black Diamonds offer. When we hit the rocky surface, deep in the Halliburton woods, the V-tread design of the Black Diamonds griped in all directions. Even with the rock surface wet and slick after a night of rain, the Can-Am had no problem putting the Black Diamonds to work and making them hook up, even under the extreme power of the 1000cc Rotax. One of the biggest complaints we’ve had when testing tires is when we get on a bank with a slope, the tire wants to slide out. This was not the case with these tires and our spotter noticed that there were always lugs connecting to the ground, and keeping the ATV heading in the right direction, negotiating the terrain we were trying to conquer. The radial design of the Black Diamond gives this tire a flatter footprint, and allows the tires to wrap around objects like rocks and logs, compared to a more bias ply tire. You’ll notice this immensely as you navigate yourself through rocky pits or log covered trails.

Throughout the duration of the trip across the rocky bush, we had more than one fellow rider with a flat. We were happy it wasn’t us. The Black Diamonds prevailed and easily put our mind at ease. On a paved road, usually we feel tires have a slight wobble or don’t track properly. The Black Diamonds didn’t make this an issue as we had the Can-Am 1000 up at full speed down a paved road. The tires continued to roll straight and smooth and offered a comfortable ride. Not that you spend most of your time riding your ATV on pavement, but when you’re getting from your cottage door to the trail system, this is something you might want to consider. We got the gift of 5 inches of hard snow to try out the Black Diamonds in, and once again, these tires took everything we could throw at them, and the big lugs worked surprisingly well in the snow. Into the frozen mud we went, and spent most of the time pulling our friends out of the mud hole that the Black Diamonds had no problem just creeping through. We only have 400 miles on our STI Black Diamonds and the tires are showing little signs of wear. We recommend these tires to any avid ATV rider, and are pleased to say that they are for sure, some of top tires we have ever tested here at ATV World Magazine. SCHEDULING YOUR WORKOUTS AND WARM-UPS

Hello ATV WORLD readers, my name is Drew Robertson. I own and operate Evolved Nutrition as well as Evolved MX/SX, a nutrition company and a conditioning company, both specializing in extreme sports. I have worked with a number of athletes in Motocross as well as Snowcross, and a couple of years ago I had a chance to work with Adam McGill, who placed 2nd that year in the GNCC championship. I will be writing articles that will discuss current fitness and nutrition trends as they apply to ATV racing and general riding. For my first article, I will show you how I layout a schedule, including workout, warm-ups, YOGA and riding. Now I’m going to break down this article into two sections; one for trail riders and one for racers. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE

In July 2006, the COHV introduced the project development grant program. Since then the COHV has allocated close to $6 million dollars to provincial off-road motorcycle (ORM) and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) rider federations across Canada. By allocating these funds, COHV and its member companies are enabling rider federations to take a leading role when it comes to reinforcing the importance of safety, education, training and protecting the responsible interests of local offhighway vehicle (OHV) club members and projects related to improving safety, rider training, environmental protection, land access, enforcement and health promotion. And with spring just around the corner, those new to the sport of ATV’s and OffHighway Motorcycles need to start thinking about rider safety and training courses. In fact, in 2007, provincial ATV rider federations identified a need to update the ATV safety curriculum and standardize it nationally so that a high quality safety program could be available across the country. As the national body, the All-Terrain Quad Council of Canada (AQCC) took on this responsibility. As a result of this exercise, the Canadian AQCC Safety Institute introduced the CASI ATV RiderCoursesm.. This RiderCoursesm is the most up-todate ATV Safety Course in Canada that incorporates both theoretical learning and hands-on practice. In the short time this program has been in place there are already over 103 instructors trained to deliver the CASI rider training program. To find out more or enroll in this course, access: registration.atvquad.ca. Equally as important, riders new and experienced need to remember that it is illegal to carry a passenger when riding an ATV that is built to carry only one person. For those who want to carry a passenger, Canadian manufacturers have introduced “Two-Ups” that are built to take the operator plus one passenger.

In most provinces riders of “Two-Ups” can enjoy the same routes and trails as ATVs but in provinces such as Ontario, there is a limit to where “Two-Ups” are allowed to travel. Why, because the Ontario Government’s definition of an all-terrain vehicle means an off-road vehicle that has four wheels, tires -- all of which are in contact with the ground, has steering handlebars, has a seat that is designed to be straddled by the driver, and is designed to carry a driver only and no passengers. These ATVs are the only vehicles allowed to travel on the shoulder of the road on some highways and move onto the paved portion where the shoulder is impassable. As the regulations exist now, two-ups and sideby-sides do not fall within this definition. This means that until the Ontario government updates Ontario regulation 316/03 to include two-up ATVs and sideby-side recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROHV’s), these vehicles are being denied access to Ontario’s connecting trail systems. Several years back, Ontario approved the Ontario Trails Strategy, which envisions a “world-class system of diversified trails, planned and used in an environmentally responsible manner to enhance the health and prosperity of all Ontarians. By updating Ontario regulation 316/03 to include two-up ATVs and side-by-sides ROHV’s, the Ontario government would be building on the Ontario Trails Strategy by ensuring that people are given a choice in how they want to enjoy healthy active lives. I ❤ FOSSIL FUELS

T

he numerals rattled by on their rampant trip to an ever-higher total as I cringed and puckered every muscle in my body, fearing the triple digit results. The new tow truck was a welcome addition to the fleet, representing incredible comfort, room, and power to rally down the highway with quads and side-by-sides in tow with nary a hitch in its stride. Yet, while expected, its thirst for dead dinosaurs was taking some getting used to, especially when it came to the number of dead presidents it took to meet demand. To be fair, expectations of remarkable fuel economy with a trailer in tow, four warm bodies on board, and cruising at a speed that may occasionally exceed the posted guidelines would have been fool hearted. In fact, burning a few extra barrels of crude is a trade off many of us will gladly make in exchange for power, room, and luxury. When historians or archeologists look back on this quirky time in the “big-picture” of life on earth, the fossil-fuel period will most likely be little more than a minor blip along the way. After all, we’ve only been burning the black gold a little more than 100 years, and in all likelihood, the chances of us burning the refined crude for another 100 to 200 more at the same ferocity is slim at best. By most accounts, the lifestyle of most off-road enthusiast would be likened to

those of a fossil fuel pig. My personal cylinder index alone (the number of internal combustion engine cylinders owned by one person) is more than half that of my entire block combined, and I’m always on the hunt for more. Where a neighbor may use an electric grass trimmer, I opt for a slightly modified two-stroke version instead. Making noise and having fun with gas is what I do, and with half my life behind me, the chances of changing now are slim. Yet, the love for an internal combustion engine should not be confused with a nonchalant attitude towards the wasting of fossil fuels. Contrary to what some environmentalists or Prius owners may think, most motorheads are equally cognizant of protecting these same natural resources. In fact, it could be argued that those with the highest cylinder index represent those with the most to lose if the world’s supply of crude is depleted, and thus represent some of loudest voices in its prudent use. Daily commutes, errands, and kid shuttle duty for example, are left for other vehicles in my fleet, versus the somewhat thirsty tow vehicle previously mentioned. While most of these trips are assigned to a typical commuter sedan, there have been more than a few occasions where I’ve eyeballed an ATV or better still, a four passenger sideby-side sitting in the shop. Suddenly that trip to the grocery store or Tim Horton’s has

become more exciting, not to mention a lot more fuel efficient. In parts of Europe, the on-road use of ATVs and UTVs is not only acceptable; it’s actually perfectly legal. Outfitted with road tires, turn signals and a rearview mirror, ATVs are acceptable and in some ways, encouraged methods of on-road transit. Consider this - an ATV occupies less space on roads and parking lots than a compact car; is more maneuverable than a car; travels at a lower speeds than a car; when used properly, can potentially be safer than a car; and an ATV is more fuel efficient than nearly every car on the road today. Add in a multi-seat, side-by-side vehicle such as the Polaris RZR-4 or the new Kawasaki Teryx Four, and the argument for car-pooling is a moot point too. In remote locations of Canada, the use of quads and side-by-sides on city and regional roads is allowed, at least as long as the local law enforcement and city officials look the other way, which is so often the case in these rural, close knit communities. However, the chances of a quad making tracks near major m e t r o p o l i t a n h u b s l i k e To r o n t o a r e currently nil… but that could change.

North American manufactures like Polaris and Can-Am already recognize the growth potential for their off-road vehicles in onroad trim in certain parts of Europe. Thousands of their quads are shipped across the pond, ready for on-highway duty, where roads are currently overburdened with larger vehicles; the cost of a new automobile is reaching stratospheric levels; and fuel prices are far beyond those found here. Here in Canada and the United States, quads and side-by-sides will remain off-road, at least for the foreseeable future. But with the political landscape shifting towards less government and fuel prices continuing to climb, your daily commute to work in your Teryx Four might not be as crazy as it sounds.
