BACK AT SPEED

Weare moving so fast in the shop these days, we’re ready for an amazing winter riding season.

We welcome Brandon Meddick to our team. Brandon has been a part of the crew with us in the trenches for some time now and brings impressive riding experience and technical knowledge to the shop.

Our spring and summer riding was memorable. Not too dry and not to messy, over all we had some

amazing rides. And we have many more chalked up on the calendar and hope to check them all off the hit list.

We’re packing up for Sledarama Snowmobile and Off-Road Show, and I personally am really looking forward to the famous SWAP! There’s always vintage treasures to be found, deals are delt, and always a good laugh to be had.

We cover a lot of ground in this issue, sit back, relax, crack a cold one and enjoy the issue.

BRP PUSHES FORWARD WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES

BRP’s has pushed through with their plan to reveal more EV vehicles with two all-electric Can-AM motorcycles and Sea-Doo Hydrofoil. The new motorcycles names are the Origin and Pulse and can be seen above. BRP has also shown a completely new electric hydrofoil board named the Sea-Doo Rise. You are still going to have to wait for almost two years as all three products are scheduled to be available in mid 2024.

THIS IS A BAD IDEA

We don’t understand how someone every thought that this would pass any transportation authority or police figure and not be pulled over. A local police officer from Quebec found a Mazda 3 with an ATV strapped to its roof. Maybe if the ATV was more securely fastened and held down with more than one strap which ran through the Mazda’s windows, the motorist could avoided being pulled over. No word on how they loaded or unloaded the ATV.

NEW OFF-ROAD VEHICLE

The odd looking and relatively confusing Shadow Six Typhoon vehicle isn’t sure if it’s a watercraft or Side-by-Side. The online video showed us it’s actually a side-by-side body with working suspension on two watercrafts and is designed for marine use only. Manufactured only using the top shelf of materials such as aerospace titanium and carbon fiber and is powered by two supercharged Yamaha 1800 R’s pushing out a combined 500HP. Making this vehicle a beast on the water. Rumor has it that the 2,360 pound plus vehicle will be able to top 80 with a go faster kit from Riva Racing. If you can’t imagine it then we’re pretty sure your bank account won’t be able to imagine the $250k US price tag either.

HERCULES TIRES’ LAUNCHES INTO CANADA WITH A CO-BRANDED PARTNERSHIP WITH TIS OFFROAD

The UTV/ATV enthusiasts will be happy with this market introduction that Hercules tires, collaborating on the tire’s design and features with the off-road division of TIS Wheels. This should bring a lot of excitement to the brand as TIS OFFROAD is one of the most recognized brands in the wheel industry.

TIS Wheels, via it’s TIS OFFROAD brand, is taking its offroad wheel expertise into the UTV/ATV market with two new UTV/ATV wheel styles available in seven different finishes. The new TIS UT1 by Hercules is backed by the Hercules Performance Promise. That promise is a 24-month limited protection policy for workmanship and materials. For more information and to find a Hercules retail location, visit https://www.herculestire.com/tis-ut1.

POLARIS LAUNCHES RZR IN INDIA

Polaris India recently announced the launch of the RZR Pro R Sport, which is big news as it will be the company’s flag ship off-road vehicle. For those of you not in the know, the Pro R Sport comes to market with Polaris’s 1997cc inline four featuring 225HP. The set price will be at Rs 59 lakh. Which doesn’t sound like a lot if you are familiar with the currency. We typed the amount into our computer and it came back at over $95,000 in Canadian dollars. We wonder if we made a mistake in our conversion.

VOLCON GETS WITH GM

GM announced it will provide electric motors and other components to Volcon for their new battery-electric Stag UTV. The American automaker will supply various EV components to Volcon through this new partnership, including motors, high voltage power distribution modules, motor inverters, onboard charging modules, DC converters, EV control modules, torque controls, battery high voltage connectors and battery cooling reservoirs. If you’re not aware the Volcon Stag is an all-wheel-drive UTV that produces 125 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. If that doesn’t seem like enough for your thirst for power. There is an optional “over boost mode” accessory that will increase the horsepower to 140.

If you are interested in a Stag get the vault ready as pricing starts at $39,999. That includes all the standard equipment including a dualmotor GM powertrain, adjustable shocks, a digital dash display and a center stack infotainment display. Volcon says not to let the big price tag discourage you from ownership as it will boast a much lower cost of ownership than comparable gasoline powered UTV, as the closed electric motor setup does not require oil changes, filter changes and belt changes, and there’s no transmission or transmission fluid to worry about, either…

What makes the shocks so good?

Aluminium bodies with tough hard anodizing on inside bore reduces wear and resulting contamination this leads to a longer service life and more stable performance over that service life

Dual rate springs permit 1 - Soft top travel = better comfort, reduced steering effort, reduced left-right bobbling and dramatically improved tire grip as each tire can articulate much easier. 2 - stronger bottom travel = improved safety and greatly reduced bottoming which permits faster, safer operation with less chassis kick. Basically the window of operation is WAY bigger than with the stock shocks.

Extra large 16mm, 19mm and 22mm shafts (depending on body size) displaces more oil for better damping control

Stage 2, 4 & 5 models with rebound adjuster allow you to match the tire recovery to the speed you are going. Rebound control in the rear greatly reduces seat kick on a big bump.

Stage 3,4 & 5 models with compression adjuster for comfort and anti bottoming control. NEW TO CANADA YAMAHA RMAX 2 LE & RMAX 4 LE

The Canadian off-road market is cheering for the landing of the Wolverine RMAX 2 LE and the Wolverine RMAX 4. With their buttery smooth power delivery, FOX iQS suspension technology and more cabin comfort touchpoints. The advanced heavy-duty suspension is designed to provide maximum articulation in low-speed situations, a balanced feel when trail riding, and ultimate bottoming resistance at higher speeds. The widearc A-arms paired with the FOX® 2.0 iQS shocks deliver 14.2 inches of travel up front with 16.9 inches of travel in the rear. FOX® Intelligent Quick Switch puts the suspension settings in the hands of the driver. And you will not have to get of the vehicle to adjust your damping level are some of the reasons that Canadians are excited that they too can own one.

GOOD NEWS IN IOWA

The summer of 2022 will go down in the books as ATVs and UTVs will be able to roll down any of Iowa’s 99 counties. With this good news there are still some restrictions. Both ATVs and Side-bySides be limited to 35 miles an hour and will need to have all their lights working with a horn, installed mirrors and of course have insurance and the operator will require valid driver’s license. The biggest restriction is that these off-road vehicles will not be permitted on any our lane highways.

ARROWHEAD ENGINEERED PRODUCTS SETS TO ACQUIRE BIHR

Arrowhead continues to add to their portfolio with Bihr. Bihr is a European company that distributes parts, accessories, clothing and gear for the powersports and bicycle markets. There are still a few hoops to go through but all is expected to go through before 2023.

COLLABORATION BETWEEN BFGOODRICH AND VOLCON

The two companies are coming together to potentially build a tire, tire monitoring system, tire pressure system and a vehicle suspension system that will make driving an electric side-by-side that much better. All of these systems are not only being developed for ride quality but to also extend the vehicle’s range. A major hold up for many EV purchases is the vehicles range. Michelin North America will also be the tire supplier of all 2023 Stag LE models.

CRUSHING SHAME

The mayor of New York city, Eric Adams had a destruction party of more than 2000 confiscated non-street legal dirt bikes, motorcycles, side-by-sides and ATVs. These 2000 vehicles were confiscated from only January 1, 2022, which was an astonishing increase of 80% from year to date. In a video the mayor had a checkered flag which he waved that started the vehicle crushing by way of a massive bulldozer. It’s surprising and many feel like it is a real missed opportunity, that these vehicles could not have been auctioned off and sold intact or parted out by the city to raise funds and donated to numerous causes in New York City.

WORCS Las Vegas Round 5 Race Report

For the first time in three years, WORCS racing held their most unique round of racing in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada at The Orleans Casino. The past two years, this special round of racing had been cancelled due to COVID restrictions, but with restrictions lifted, racers once again raced on the custom built track within the Casino’s arena and outside on the parking lot. Loads of dirt were hauled in along with tires and logs to build a challenging course for the racers with quads, motorcycles, and UTVS all competing together on the same weekend, which made for a packed racing schedule with all the races running for nearly half the normal race lengths.

For the fifth round of the 2022 season, quads and motorcycles raced on Saturday into the night with the pro races held after dark with the Vegas Strip hotels lighting up the night sky, and Sunday was reserved for UTV racing only, which wrapped up the weekend of racing by midafternoon. There is one more round of racing at Cedar City before heading into the summer break with racing resuming in September.

With nine Pro ATV WORCS Championships under his belt, Beau Baron continues to be the man to beat as he remains undefeated in 2022 with five straight wins and on his way to his 10th Pro ATV Championship. At over 40 years old, he still can dominate Pro racers half his age, and not even appear winded at the checkered flag.

721 Jacob Stevens scored his first podium finish after grabbing the Pro Holeshot and holding off Beau Baron for four laps before dropping back to second place, which he held to the checkered flag. 549 Beau Baron made the pass on Stevens in the fifth lap to take over the Pro ATV lead and never looked back as he gapped the field to take win.

JURASSIC WORLD

It seems like just yesterday, but Jurassic World hit the big screens back in 2015. The sequel to the 1993 mega blockbuster Jurassic Park did not disappoint. Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the movie brought in a stunning 1.672 billion US dollars at the box office. During the height of the movie’s chaos where dinosaurs escaping their pens and killing humans at a wild rate. The go to guy, Chris Pratt, saves the day again and takes Howard on a ride to safety on a Suzuki ATV. With the enormous budget that the Jurassic franchise enjoyed, we are a little baffled why it wasn’t a jacked up custom bad ass looking ATV. Sadly, the only custom thing that we noticed was the unique Jurassic badge of the front of the ATV.

VACATION

The 2015 continuation on the 1983 comedy National Lampoon’s Vacation, where Rusty Griswold takes his own family on a cross-country excursion to Walley World for some family bonding. With mishaps and strange adventures on the way the Griswold’s are in for a few unfriendly encounters. While at Audrey Griswold’s Ranch, after a misunderstanding at a hot spring, Russ Griswold and Stone Crandall head out to herd the cattle on a pair of Honda Fourtrax Foremans, “Are their helmets?” “Yeah I keep them with the tampons!” With the engines roaring and excitement in the air, Russ gets easily distracted by his family, a butcher happens in a way you wouldn’t think of!

an the work week start off any better? Polaris gave us a call on a Monday morning, asking for input on one of their latest and greatest big-boy toys. Our task was to put a 2022 General Troy Lee Edition to a true enthusiast’s test. It didn’t take much for my rubber arm to twist, so we immediately obliged and were up for this so-called challenge!

How could anyone complain with a bunch of paid days, and be able to ride anywhere we wanted with the boss-man’s credit card in hand? The only question was, where to go?

The Yoop it is!

If you ask anyone living in the neighborhood of the Great Lakes Region (which stretches from Minnesota to New York in the U.S., and runs all along the southern border of Ontario), they know you can find some awesomely challenging ORV riding, in many different places. My group, which is from Wisconsin, passed around and argued numerous destinations over a cold one. Ranging from Moab, UT, to the Hatfield-McCoy trail systems in Tennessee, to even Whistler, BC as prime examples of epic destinations that riders seek out, or just dream of visiting one day.

But for us, like so many living in the Great Lakes Region, we have some trade secrets, and so our mind was easily set right in our own backyard, to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, affectionately known as

the U.P. or the Yoop. Simply said, for my riding group, it is our honeymoon place.

Before we get too deep on the ride itself, it seems appropriate to dish out a short bio on this little-known, hidden gem. Nestled on the south side of Lake Superior in the far northern part of the Midwest, it shares the majority of its borders with three of the Great Lakes. Which makes The “Yoop” a popular place in the wintertime for snow seekers, with the endless Lake Effect snow that falls.

The Upper Penninsula is a somewhat odd place geographically. It’s legally part of the state of Michigan, but only shares a land border with the State of Wisconsin. The next closest land mass to its border is not the rest of its own state of Michigan, but rather Ontario, which is only separated

by the narrow St. Mary’s River, dividing countries between two separated sister cities both named Sault Saint Marie. (Thanks a lot to the war of 1812!)

If you get too far from the great lakes and you try to reference the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in any sort of conversation, you likely will be greeted with a confused look - as if such a strange sounding place even exists. But for those in the know, its nickname is derived from the “U.P” abbreviation for Upper Peninsula. It is simply “The Yoop” for us in Wisconsin, and local residents are called “Yooper’s”. In this article, when you hear “Yoop” or “Yoop-

For trip planning purposes, if you only rely on hard evidence such as club trail maps or GPS apps (such as the Polaris Ride Command ™), it seems like the opportunities might be somewhat underwhelming in compared to other popular ORV destinations. Sure, there are enough trails to get your miles on when you want a leisurely cruise, but you can’t properly conduct an extreme test of a lifted Polaris UTV, rolling on factory 30” tires, on justmaintained trails. That’s why the “Yoop” was the perfect location for us! The Yoop boasts a staggering 75% of its 16,000sq/ mi (40,000 sq/km) of total land that is open for public for recreation, and it’s loaded with all kinds of different opportunities for any possible outdoor adventure. For us, we wanted to get our new General into the deep mud, and “mudded” on the vast, multi-use off-road network of secret forest and logging roads that are open for travel, and rarely used by anyone. It’s not easy to find these places, and it’s certainly not advertised, but local “Yoopers” can help you.

If you are not familiar with these spots, the only option is to dig into other nonmainstream resources such as the local county and state land websites, or the US Forestry Service MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Maps). These locate all the ‘cool’ areas and provide details on what type of vehicle you can legally drive on each.

Even these resources can sometimes be confusing though, as a lot of the best spots are specified as ‘roads’, but don’t be fooled with the nomenclature. In fact, when you set out on them, you would think that you are cross country riding somewhere that you shouldn’t be. Expect to find grass, mud, downed trees, washouts, water crossings and extremely narrow pathways that are cringeworthy when riding your brand-new, shiny machine, hearing the trees drag down the side. Long story short, this is the exact terrain that we were looking for, to perform our extreme test of the General T.L.E. We may have cheated a little here, as we hooked up with a few local guides Kyle Bartlett and Steven Chiapuzio out of the Ironwood, Michigan area to show us how the “Yoopers” do it right!

General-ly speaking

The General shares the same WER Velocity series shock package as the rest of the General XP lineup, making it very smooth and easy ride over all conditions. Our vehicle was set from the factory slightly soft, so after the first day, we elected to stiffen up the dual rate springs a bit to dial out vehicle roll. This didn’t have a detrimental effect on the ride quality over bumps, but it did give us more stability in the corners, and also bumped up the ride height while carrying two adult passengers. Paired with its 13.5-inches of ground clearance, we never bottomed out, and left the reservoir adjusters in the middle position for the majority of the time. Rolling on the four 30 x 10–15-inch Pro Armor Crawler XG tires was an absolute pleasure. Having four identical tires allows you to safely carry only one spare tire (which we were

able to strap down on the Rhino rack). For long, challenging trips, these tires can be used on any position, rather than riding a long way home on a narrow front tire mounted on the rear, like many of us have been forced to do. Oddly enough, even though their sizes are identical, the front and rear tires have different tread patterns. The fronts feature a three-lug wider spaced design, and the rears have a tighter fourlug pattern. These tires performed great in every condition that we travelled through. Starting the adventure, they traveled smooth and quiet down the pavement, and carried on with their performance over downed trees, large steep washouts, rocky hill climbs, and of course, bottomless mud. We decided to ride it in 2WD for much of the day when we realized that this General

OF COURSE NO RIDE IS COMPLETE WITHOUT TUNES, AND THIS ONE IS BLUETOOTH AND SMARTPHONE CONNECTION READY WE HAD PLENTY OF AC/ DC ROCKING PUNCH COMING OUT OF THE ROCKFORD FOSGATE STAGE 3 AUDIO SYSTEM WITH AMP AND 4 SPEAKERS.

doesn’t get stuck. Sadly, in our first two hundred miles of riding, we didn’t get to use the winch, but were entertained watching some of the other vehicles in our group use theirs!

The Ride Command system comes stock with a vast array of technology like front and rear cameras that you can view on the screen while navigating. The backup camera seems like an unnecessary luxury, but most all UTV’s are nearly impossible to see behind, so it really became a feature that we felt is worth every extra dollar. There are just too many options in the instrumentation on this machine to go into detail on everything. However, the GPS mapping and the glove-friendly touch screen were both things that any rider will enjoy.

Of course, no ride is complete without tunes, and this one is Bluetooth and smartphone connection ready We had plenty of AC/DC rocking punch coming out of the Rockford Fosgate stage 3 audio system, with amp and 4 speakers. The Yoop definitely had Thunderstruck reverberating through the pines! The system is extremely powerful, and using the accessory position on the ignition switch, it doesn’t force you to turn off the vehicle, then turn the key back on and re-start your playlist when stopping for a break on the trails. One

negative thing we found about this system versus some of Polaris nonRide Command audio options, is its lack of a volume knob which was replaced by two up and down buttons next to the rest of the controls. On most Bluetooth devices, when streaming to a stereo system, you can use your phone’s audio buttons for a quick volume change, but for some reason, having our iPhone paired with this unit, we could not do that. This didn’t allow for any quick changes in volume, and changes were cumbersome and longer than desired, holding down the static buttons, and taking a while to go from our cruising volume to complete silence. A little thing that probably doesn’t run too high on most people’s priority list when deciding on a new vehicle is the steering wheel, but every one of our test riders commented on this during their time with the General. It’s certainly different than what you would find on most other UTV’s as it’s very narrow on the width, but significantly

deeper on its depth. Polaris calls it a race inspired design, and after driving it, we now know why!

The wheel just straight up makes you feel like a you are in a race car. At first grip, it seems somewhat awkward and oblong, but after a few miles of getting used to it, the powerful grip and control it provides is just something that you want on every vehicle.

One comment that was repeated multiple times by our riders is that this General XP rides almost like a RZR… almost, but it’s not apples-to-apples as far as fast trail performance or dune jumping. There are a lot of little performance differences that the General lacks in comparison to the RZR, such as ten less horsepower, slightly less ground clearance and suspension travel, and the General is quite a bit heavier. But it makes up for these performance downfalls with its superior cockpit and other standard extras. The seats are some of the most comfortable in the industry with their more upright position, and the cab comes equipped with a full roof and standard, fully sealed half doors, so it is ready to withstand the elements. There are no annoying gaps that find a way for any bit of water or mud to get all over you and your passengers, even when riding slow. Bottom line, if you want to stay clean while riding you certainly can, which isn’t possible with many of the other mainstream UTV models. Standard General packages also have a big front bumper that sure comes in handy when needing to ram down things that might get in your way. Compare that with the mainly naked and exposed front end of the RZR. Plus, who doesn’t like a dump box with tons of storage capacity? In fact, this Troy Lee Edition came with almost every accessory that we would consider important; we only elected to install front and rear Polaris glass panels. These installed super quick and easy due to the awesome Lock and Ride design. For an all-day challenging off-trail adventure in pouring rain, like we had on this trip, the General was a much better fit than a RZR.

TO PULL, GRIP, RIP, AND SPIN YOU NEED SERIOUS TIRES AND THE MAXXIS BIGHORN SHOES DO THE JOB. THEY ARE MEATY AND NOT LITTLE PIZZA CUTTERS BY ANY MEANS. A BIG POWERFUL WINCH COMES STANDARD WITH THIS GENERAL, BUT YOU PROBABLY WON’T NEED IT THAT OFTEN BECAUSE THIS SXS IS MORE THAN CAPABLE.

STANDARD GENERAL PACKAGES ALSO HAVE A BIG FRONT BUMPER THAT SURE COMES IN HANDY WHEN NEEDING TO RAM DOWN THINGS THAT MIGHT GET IN YOUR WAY.

Customize with more, here’s our top four!

While this Troy Lee package came with almost all of the essential accessories right out of the box, if you have extra money in the budget, here are a few of our recommendations in order of our preference

#1 Front Windshield

You gotta have wind and rain protection, so a windshield is pretty much a mandatory purchase. We love the full glass OEM shield from Polaris. It’s only a few hundred bucks more than a poly windshield, but will last much longer and won’t get scratched up after the first ride. It also comes pre-configured for adding a wiper, either powered or manual. Both are very nice to have!

#2- Rear Windshield

Many new riders elect to skip the rear glass. But in most UTV’s, when running with only front glass, it will cause the dust to swirl back into the cab, so they always get one eventually. You can save a few bucks and get a lock-and-ride poly shield, as scratching on the rear isn’t as big of an issue. But again, for only $100 savings why not just go glass?

#3- Nerf Bars

If you ride a lot of rocky areas, this might be something to seriously consider. The cost of a set of Polaris Extreme Kick out Nerf Bars will be less than cracking the trim plastics over and over beneath the doors. The Polaris nerf bars extend just below the frame, so they don’t take away much ground clearance and give you something to bounce on. If you ride in tight trees, they will keep your doors and plastic protected from collisions.

#4- Bed Covers

Polaris doesn’t make too much in this department as an OEM accessory, but there are a few different aftermarket options. We suggest one that can fit over the Rino rack, and still allows you to fit coolers and other gear underneath. This keeps all your stuff clean and secured, with no rachet straps needed.

Truly limited model

So, what are you getting with the Troy Lee vs a standard General XP? First, you get a fully loaded Command Edition package, plus the custom Troy Lee Designs paint scheme, custom stitching on the seats, a pro Armor 6-inch LED light bar, and a Rhino Rack over the rear bed. So yea, every included standard option available in all the various General packages. With an estimated production of only 1000 total units, this is certainly a limited edition. But at the time of writing there were many of these still up for grabs on dealer’s floors. Some may claim this is due to a somewhat higher price tag, but considering what you get, your all-in cost

with the added essential accessories won’t be much different than any other comparable vehicle.

Heading out of town after three days of riding, we totaled just over 225 miles, but put in 20+ actual riding hours, which shows just how slow and intense most of riding conditions were. Our General T.L.E. will be a tough one to return as it exceeded our expectations, and carried us confidently on quite the adventure with our “Yooper” friends. Only one thing was left to do on the last day; stock up a dozen deliciously famous Yoop Pasties to take home to the office for the guys who had to miss our epic adventure!

FINALLY, WE CERTAINLY ENJOYED OUR TIME WITH THE MAN VAN, BUT IN THE ESSENCE OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS WE DO NOT WANT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST OUR FELLOW FEMALE RIDERS.

e all know someone who just loves their mini-van, maybe it’s even you! These folks know their ride is not a head turner at the stoplight. Even if you do find a way to roast the tires, the guy/gal with a real car will surely give you an eye-roll. However, most of us have probably driven, rented, or been the designated driver in one. The truth is, you don’t earn any street cred when a buddy sees you behind the wheel of a Caravan. In reality, there is a lot of functional reasons soccer moms (and some dads) love their van. You can haul a ton of random stuff, loads of people, and sit up higher and comfortably. But what if you could take away all the humiliating stigma, keep all the functionality, add some good looks, and a lot of serious 4x4 off-road capability? Nothing exists really in the mainstream auto market; what we really need is a “MAN VAN”! However, in the off-road market there actually are options that check all these boxes, and your dealer probably has one sitting right on the showroom floor - The Defender!

Defender is the real deal

I mean, it’s not an actual ‘deal’ because you are going to drop plenty of Benjamins (or Sir Robert Bordens) for this machine, with a price tag north of $30,000 US and $36,000 CA. But for the 2022 model year, the options at your dealership to purchase your very own “Man Van” don’t get much better than a Can-Am Defender Max Limited. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one for a few short weeks, and we knew that there were plenty of possibilities ahead.

Our honeymoon with this loaded defender was in mid-summer, so we pretty much planned to do it all! Our goal was to try to put the Defender into every possible scenario that we could. The Defender comes in your choice of grey, blue, camouflage,

with all the choices relatively conservative, but it’s still a good-looking vehicle. Getting behind the wheel and turning the key brings it to life in a really smooth and quiet manner, which really gave us a good feel right from the start.

Decked out in luxury, this unit comes equipped with ultra-comfortable seating for six. Dual bucket-style seats in the front and back are some of the most comfortable that we have tested, and the middle seat is not too bad itself! In the back there is tons of leg room for three adults, and with the widely adjustable driver seat, you have room for drivers of all sizes.

Right from the factory, this thing has almost all the amenities of a high-end car or truck, so there isn’t much that you sacri-

fice. Keyed locking doors, power windows, windshield wipers with auto washer fluid all might be considered somewhat excessive to some. But having these options at your disposal makes it extremely easy and enjoyable to drive in all conditions.

The UTV market is growing exponentially, and with the growth thousands of miles of roads that were previously reserved for just automobiles, ORV use is spiking. In our local area for example, the road routes have grown 300% over the past few years as communities have learned that people love driving these things, even if its solely on pavement. It’s just plainly more fun taking a leisurely cruise anywhere in an ORV, especially one like the Defender Max Limited. Ours had the fully enclosed cab with heat and air conditioning, so pouring rain, sweltering heat, or even freezing snowy days, would be no problem at all. With plenty of soundproofing, this Defender is extremely quiet in the interior, enough to easily hold a conversation, even while wearing a helmet.

Our first week with the vehicle was mostly just that, using it to cruise everywhere and our testing area (in Northern Wisconsin) was fully open for ORV travel on nearly every road, besides a few major highways. For our first destination of the day, we loaded six adults and set off for an

evening dinner trip. One thing that immediately stood out was how well the power steering system works. It gives effortless and consistent operation, so much that it’s something that you don’t even think about until you jump in to another UTV and feel the difference.

A quick disclaimer that this is certainly not the fastest vehicle off the line, but it has no problem driving more than fast enough, especially for its size, with a top speed of 65mph. We confirmed this stat as soon as possible on the very first fire road shortcut.

One odd thing on this Limited version was there was no factory radio. We were confused because it has almost every other option available. Plus, there’s not a good place to mount one with the dash layout, so your only real option is the CanAm roof stereo package or an aftermarket equivalent. The sticker price on adding this accessory is expensive, even for the basic package, at almost $3000.00 US, $3600.00 CA. With this Defender already coming with a roof, it seemed to us that this may have been better solved with a basic factory stereo. Personally, I would have elected to trade the power windows for a radio, as we rarely used the windows with the full HVAC system. This machine just can’t be used correctly without blasting

your favorite sing-a-long tunes to your busfull of passengers! In a pinch we used a standard Bluetooth speaker, which worked surprisingly well, resting in the front cupholder in this quiet cab. We were not sweaty or cold all day and night, as air conditioning and heat are very powerful, so the cab stays a comfortable temp. That said, there is only one singular knob that controls it all, and you have to click through the menu and adjust from heat to cool and fan control. Not the end of the world to do, as we found that most of the time, once you set it to the conditions for the day, you could just leave it.

BIG 27-INCH XPS TRAIL FORCE TIRES PUT THE POWER TO THE DIRT ON THIS DEFENDER. HAVING A TOTAL HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM CAN KEEP YOU WARM AND DRY, OR COOL AND COMFORTABLE NO MATTER THE WEATHER. WE WERE NOT SWEATY OR COLD ALL DAY AND NIGHT AS AIR CONDITIONING AND HEAT ARE VERY POWERFUL, SO THE CAB STAYS A COMFORTABLE TEMP.

Technical Time!

Let me preface this before we get too far; this machine isn’t classified as an “Off Road Vehicle” for just using on the roads. Naturally, when you see the marketing and social media posts of hauling hay bales or dust flying, we craved more! Our biggest destination while we had the Defender was Clam Lake, Wisconsin. A four-day excursion with a truck full of riders ready, was just the ticket to see what trouble we could get into. This wasn’t our first trip here, but something about this area just keeps us coming back. Maybe it’s the huge local elk population that seems to always be watching you, or the thousands of acres of surrounding ChequamegonNicolet National Forest. But my personal love is the endless, challenging trail system that has plenty to do for multiple days, without seeing the same thing twice.

This visit came with a forecast for perfect weather, and the Defender just screamed ‘off the grid camping’, so we had to oblige. If you have ever been camping before, you know the worst part is the packing and preparation. With little options to get supplies locally, other than bare essentials, you have to pack all that you might need. That leads to tons of extra items in addition to the typical riding gear. With the massive storage inside the cab and in the box, we were able to put nearly everything that we needed right in the UTV itself, and drive it straight onto the trailer. Even if you opt for hauling on an open trailer, all your stuff will stay clean and dry inside this fully enclosed machine on the road trip, and all the extras can go securely in the dump bed. Arriving at our campsite, we unloaded in the parking area and were

able to drive right in easily without touching anything. The Defender made this camping experience much easier.

Clam Lake offered us a mix of conditions from very easy to as about as tough as it gets on a marked trail, and we had no problem taking the Defender through every bit of it. One thing we did notice fairly quickly once off-road, was that we wished the Defender had more ground clearance. It is a tightrope in this regard because we also understand the negative effects of a higher mass, with already significant body roll. This is all to be expected from a rather heavy machine, but with the full skid plate, we had no issues for most of the time. Some of the rougher sections with huge rocks and deep water holes, we did have to dial the throttle back a bit, but we never fell behind much with all the sportier UTV’s in our group.

On the dusty gravel roads, we elected to stay in the rear of the

group and test out the full cab setup, following multiple UTV’s in a huge dust cloud. We were happy to be able to breathe easy and really didn’t notice any dust coming in while riding. However, after the day’s ride there was a light coating of dust on most of the interior. So, while it was not 100% sealed, it certainly was more than acceptable.

Our last night in town with the Defender just happened to be my birthday, and my

chauffeured ride around was probably the best personal experience with this unit. Sometimes a slow cruise, where you get to sit back and watch everything go by, is priceless fun, especially when you are worn out from a long weekend. When in town, don’t forget to stop by Ransom’s place in downtown Clam Lake, where the owner Zach Ransom always shows us a good time and makes it our very favorite pit stop. Workhorse of a Clydesdale

Yea, this thing knows a thing or two about getting some serious work done. Outfitted with a huge 38 x 54.5” dump box that can carry over a half yard of material, you can haul an awful lot. The sides are lower than some competitive models, so getting away without strapping things down can be tougher.

With the dump box also comes a payload capacity of 1000 lbs., so you could technically classify this beast as a half-ton pickup truck as well. During one point in our ride, we let the kids have an adventure day on their 110cc dirt bikes, and of course, one of them blew out a tire and tube deep into the woods. This would have normally been a big problem as you can’t really ride it out or tow it home. But it couldn’t have happened on a better day! With the Defender, we were easily able to borrow our cooler rachet strap and throw the entire bike right in the bed, even while keeping the tailgate closed! With a relatively rough ride ahead back to base camp, there were

little worries about our cargo, and were able to get it back while keeping up with the rest of the group.

Nitpicking on one thing, the door handles are rather small in comparison to other brands and somewhat hard to operate. On our unit, we found a lot of this coming from the screws that were easily coming loose after bouncing around on the trail. We did manage to lose one mid-ride which made it even trickier to open. After tightening them multiple times, we pulled out the toolbox and remedied it once and for all with some Lock-tite.

Finally, we certainly enjoyed our time with the Man Van, but in the interest of political correctness, we do not want to discriminate against our fellow female riders. Our two women in the group ended up with more miles behind the wheel after the first few days than anyone! Staying clean and cruising in comfort were just too enjoyable to pass up, I guess! For all you ladies out there, stay tuned for our next rendition… the “She-Wagon”!

FINALLY, WE CERTAINLY ENJOYED OUR TIME WITH THE MAN VAN, BUT IN THE ESSENCE OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS WE DO NOT WANT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST OUR FELLOW FEMALE RIDERS.

So many times many of us overlook the mid rang ATV’s. I’ve been guilty of this over the years as they don’t always come loaded high performance features of the 850s or 1000s and they’re not supposed to. Truth is many mid range ATV’s like the Polaris Sportsman 570 EPS are more suitable for so many riders, especially when they come in so many different trims and packages. If you can park your ego at the door and really understand what you need a mid range could be more suitable to fit your needs and also be a little lighter on your pocket book.

atvworldatvworldmag.com MOTORCYCLE SUPERSHOW • JAN 6-8, 2023 • TORONTO INTERNATIONAL CENTRE ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 19 • FALL 2022 51

TThe Polaris Sportsman 570 fits nicely in the mid range category and has been one of the top performers for many years, and 2022 appears to be no different. Polaris is offering nine trim packages for the 2022 line up including the new Ride Command and Utility Editions.

On first walk around the Sportsman 570 EPS has stayed steady with the overall appearance. Right from the factory the EPS model comes with the same front bumper and front cargo rack extenders as some of the Sportsman 850s and 1000s. When I parked myself on the machine it felt right, giving the rider a nice comfortable feel, the seat was slim yet felt very roomy making

it easy to maneuver from side to side and from a seated to standing riding position. For me this is especially important for those full days out on the trails. If the seat is too wide or tall it makes it tires the rider out that much more than needed after a full day out on the trail.

After spending over 500 miles on the Sportsman 570 EPS I can say that, Polaris designed this particular model for those riders who are looking for a serious trail performer that is capable of doing more than enough yard work all without paying a premium of larger mils. The quality of the fit and finish wasn’t skipped on this unit either giving any owner a sense of pride.

AFTER MUCH BONDING WITH THE 570 PROSTAR, I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT IT OVER DELIVERS ON WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR.

DON’T UNDER ESTIMATE IT

The 44hp Polaris ProStar provided plenty of power in all conditions. Sure, it was never the fastest with the big stuff and sure 1000s can pull more things around the yard or out of the forrest. After much bonding with the 570 ProStar, I can honestly say that it over delivers on what you are paying for. It didn’t matter if we were pushing it hard though open trails or if we in the tight bush trails navigating navigating technical terrain. At no time did any of us feel that this machine was underpowered for what a moderate to intermediate trail rider would utilize it for.

MORE SMOOTH NEWS

The 570 EPS also comes with the new Multi-Select Electronic Power Steering. This allows the driver to choose from three different power steering levels depending on your terrain. When we rode deep into the forest on some ridiculously rocky and technical trails we found that opting for the “high” level of EPS saved the pipes (arms) and shoulders by not having to muscling the machine. What I also liked was that after rolling through the rocky technical stiff we hit the wide open rail bed. On the rail bed I dropped down and

PLUSH IS IMPORTANT

Most people that have ever ridden a Sportsman would agree with me what I say that they ride well and rare comfortable. The suspensions is impressive, with 9.5 inches of travel in the back and 8.2 inches in the front, then add 11.5 inches of ground clearance it made for a smooth ride. We were particularly pleased when we hit an extremely rough section on rail trail and did the experienced rider move when seeing a big hole that just kind of appeared on the rail bed…Brace for impact! I may have blinked and saw images of my first birthday parties, my grandmother, my first bicycle…You get the picture. But after the quick blink of darkness and my eyes reopened, the suspension did its job. It sucked up those big bumps and all of the stutters throughout the ride extremely well.

My overall impression is that the Polaris Sportsman 570 EPS met all of my expectations and then some. As much as I like having the option of Ride Command at my fingertips, as soon as those tires hit the dirt I didn’t miss it and just enjoyed the ride!

THE FLY PATROL OVERBOOT XC MOTO PANTS.

The only complaint we’ve heard when talking about off-road pants is the fact that they are tight around the ankle for motocross boots and don’t have pockets to even hold your cell phone close to you. Even though that’s great on the track, it’s not when out on the trail. The average trail rider is different and should not be subjected to wearing the same things as track riders. In developing these pants, FLY had the off-road rider in mind by making a pair of pants that are comfortable and useful. Fly loosened the pants cuff to go over your boots, offering for more moveability and to help block the trail elements like wind and water. Also, with a leather heat shield on the inside of the legs to protect from motor heat and 6 zippered vents for that perfect breeze when needed. The adjustable material and the little belt strap, these pants will stay around your waste with all the twisting and moving. These pants look sharp and the durable material will last a long time. Check out www.flyracing.com

RICOCHET 2-PIECE A-ARM & CV BOOT GUARDS,

You can’t help but cringe at the grinding sound when you bottom out on a rock, and then spend the next while worrying you might have ripped a cv boot or a front axle out. Relax in the hands of Ricochet with the 2-Piece A-Arm & CV Boot Guards. We took a closer look at a pair of front a-arm guards from Ricochet Off-Road and we were impressed. They’re made of strong lightweight aluminum for strength and durability, not to mention Ricochet will powder coat them for you right at the factory so they are a simple bolt-on. with no more stress when you hear that awful thud when going over a rock or tree. Be safe and not sorry, and head over to www.ricohetoffroad.com and order a bolt-on set for your ATV or SXS.
