ur Spring ride schedule is overflowing, with back-to-back adventures planned, we can’t complain. As soon as this weather hits, everyone shows up again, and we’re thrilled about it. While some of us ride all year round, many don’t, which makes for some late nights getting their rides up to speed for the spring riding season. Getting together to work on our rides is what we do as enthusiasts. Many times you can learn a few tricks from someone that has installed or fixed the same part or accessory before. If you’re the guy that has already done the install twenty times, and your buddy is now attempting it for the first time, it can be somewhat frustrating while sitting in on the trial-and-error first attempt. Unfortunately, it will endup to be quicker and less stressful if you just do it yourself while your buddy, the owner of the vehicle, just watches. If you can’t peg anyone like this, bad news champ. It’s probably you! That being said, at some point we’ve all been guilty of it. Sometimes you have to know when to be the one that’s just passing the tools, paying full attention, and making sure the cold, cheap shop motivation is just that – cold! I can’t complain about any of late nights spend in the garage. It’s great to be part of a group again while fixing, tweaking, laughing and learning about all the gadgetry and products on the market today. I can’t wait to get out and ride again with everyone that hangs it up in the cold months. You will see in this issue, we have featured a couple of great builds to get you motivated, (if you needed some) to turn your daily driver into a Sunday racer or a crazy trail machine. We’ve added a few great new columns, and I hope you enjoy this issue. In the next few months, as we log on the miles across North America, we will be at many manufacturers’ new model releases, at the race tracks and on the trails. This spring, try to make family time to attend some of the events and rides. It’s important that we all support the sport together, and we hope to see you at a function soon! In the meantime, sit back, relax and enjoy this issue. We’ll be in the shop where we have a few units undergoing transformations, and you’ll read about them in a future issue of ATV World.

Polaris Industries jointly announced with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today that the company is voluntarily recalling certain RZR 900 and 1000 off-road vehicles manufactured since model year 2013, due to reports of thermal-related incidents, including fires. Detailed information about the recall is available at www. polaris.com/rzr-recall. All affected vehicle owners will be asked to contact a dealer to schedule a complimentary service appointment, which should take approximately one hour. Polaris is working quickly to source the necessary parts – and is allocating parts daily to dealers as they become available. Dealers will schedule appointments, subject to parts availability. Polaris has already begun implementation of its Corrective Action Plan and has made manufacturing updates in new-production vehicles. ISUZU RODEO BIGHORN

The first generation of Isuzu trooper was introduced to the Japanese market as the Isuzu Rodeo Bighorn, but the “Rodeo” part was soon dropped in favor of the Bighorn. Both the 1st generation (1981-1991) and 2nd generation (1991-2002) Troopers were known as Isuzu and Subaru Bighorns in Japan and Isuzu Bighorn in New Zealand.

energy to mechanical energy. (mo on) One way of categorizing engines is the fuel they use. The primarily fuel is gasoline, but we do have diesel fuel powered ATVs and some hybrid electric ATVs as well. Another way to group engines is the bore and stroke comparison. If an engine has a smaller piston bore (diameter) than the piston stroke, it is referred to as an Under Square configura on. If the bore and stroke are the same, the engine is referred to as Square, and finally, if the engine has a larger bore than the stroke, it is referred to as an Over Square engine. Then we have the reciproca ng piston engine in two and four stroke designs, and although we have not seen it in an ATV, the rotary or Wankel engine has been found in snowmobiles, motorcycles, gokarts, automobiles and other applica ons. Who knows, it may be on the drawing board somewhere. While speaking of these engines, the names associated with their inven on include Nikolaus O o of Germany for the four-stroke engine, E enne Lenoir of Belgium for the two-stroke engine, and German engineer Felix Wankel for the rotary engine. It’s hard to imagine that these inventors and others associated with engine advancement ever thought their inven ons would ever have achieved today’s designs and capabili es. The final characteris c we will look at is the shape of different engine designs. These include, but certainly are not limited to single; twin; triple; four; five; six (and up) cylinder(s), inline, “V”, horizontally opposed, and probably one or two I have forgo en, or am not aware of. Now today’s engines, for the most part, are very good and reliable when used in the environment and capacity that they were intended for. Not including compe on, founda on manufacturers

WHY REINVENT THE WHEEL?

When

we are talking about ATVs, especially when purchasing and comparing one manufacturer to another, one of the most common topics, if not the most popular topic is engines. Over the next few minutes, let’s take a look at these power plants and see if we can shed some light on some of the aspects of their development to date. To start off the discussion, what exactly would be the defini on of an engine? Well….I have always thought of an engine as an energy converter. It is an apparatus built of various parts and pieces that changes the potenal energy of a fuel to thermal (heat) energy and then changes the thermal

This engine design has been finding its way into more applications where inline engine designs were more commonplace. One of the advantages of a V design is that it helps reduce the overall engine width in the chassis.

atvworld (ones that have been around for a long me) have good engines, so why would they change them? To answer this ques on I contacted a good friend of mine, Mark Giesler of Giesler Marine in Powassan, Ontario. His family has been in the recrea onal business with BRP a very long me, offering sales and service of Ski Doo, Can-Am and marine equipment through their dealership. On most days, Giesler Marine is a very ac ve beehive of ac vity, but as Mark always does, he makes me to talk to customers and friends. So having the opportunity to talk to Mark, I asked him why he thought manufacturers changed engine designs from tried and true models though the years. The first thing that came to mind was the need to meet government emission levels. This requirement to protect the environment and con nually improve to meet legislated standards has caused many engine designs to be discon nued, (primarily two-strokes) due to the inability to meet prescribed emission levels. Four-strokes were more capable to meet these emission requirements early on, although two-strokes have been making a comeback, thanks to electronics, fuel injectors and be er oil control systems. Next, the direc on shi ed to make engines that would fit into new chassis designs. Everyone born in the six es and seven es can appreciate the equipment we used to ride, compared to the vehicles we have access to today. Designs today must take into greater account what the complete end concept will be like. This

was not how designs back then were done. Terms like low center of gravity, power and weight transfer, mid-engine design, sprung and unsprung weight and pushing in the corner have come up to help make the vehicle of today handle be er and safer. An example would include snowmobiles that had an issue for the longest me with one side of the sled weighing more than the other, due to the transmission/powertrain components being on the le side of the engine. ATVs of today have many more creature comforts than in the past. Everything has to have a place. Electric start, ba eries, winches, power steering, two/four-wheel drive shi mechanisms and differen al locks are all located under the plas c. On rare occasions, the engine design has just not lived up to the applica on it was built to perform in. Therefore, when the opportunity arises, a manufacturer will change it up. This could be related to customer feedback surveys, (yes these are read) specific warranty or reoccurring repair issues, fuel consump on, overall vehicle opera on, or an idiosyncrasy like a simple vibra on issue. Being a Can-Am owner, one of the reasons I bought the ATV I did was because I thought it was the best in its class. I men oned this to Mark and he agreed to the fact that every manufacturer wants to have the best, strongest and (possibly) fastest machine in its appropriate category. This fact may not be the reason to bear the cost of retooling for a new engine pla orm every year, but let’s face it, when you are

spending the money anyways; you might as well put together the biggest and baddest equipment you can. Using data like horsepower and torque to prove why you are the Top Dog on the trail is great for the marketing department, and the company’s bo om line. Manufacturers strive to be number one; a er all, isn’t that what sells? I thanked Mark for his me and headed for the keyboard. As the years go by, I remind myself that there is no doubt that my reasons for buying a certain vehicle have and will con nue to change. However, although it may be nice to know that I do not have to be the fastest on the trail anymore, it’s great to know that if need be, I can be.

This liquid cooled engine may look small in comparison to some other single cylinder engines. The reason is that it will be installed into the ATV chassis with a separate CVT (continuously variable transmission).

This air-cooled engine looks quite large in comparison to the single cylinder liquid cooled engine. In fact, they are close to the same displacement, but this engine housing is manufactured to include a typical gear transmission that makes up about 50% of its size.

This is one of the most common configurations found in motorcycles and snowmobiles, with limited use in ATVs like the Yamaha Banshee. This variant has both cylinders in one block and a single head design as well.

Yamaha has used up almost all the space in this Kodiak chassis design. When you look closely, you can see the exhaust; the carburetor; the engine cylinder and head; the transmission and the range/ reverse shift lever; pull starter; electric starter, and many other components using up every bit of available space. This engine configuration was definitely made for this chassis.

RZR Seat Belt Warning By-Pass

1

The newer Polaris’s and many other UTVs feature a safety switch that puts your ride into a 15 mph limp mode if you a empt to drive without the seatbelt latched. This switch needs to be bypassed when installing a ermarket safety harnesses. Simply cut and connect the two wires going to the driver’s side seat belt with a bu splice or crimp cap.

XP Turbo Time Out

3

Running the XP Turbo out of fuel can cause damage in mul ple ways. Polaris engineers were probably well aware of this during its development, and built in a low fuel “limp mode”. When a standard Polaris UTV hits the low fuel level, the LCD fuel gauge starts to fl ash, le ng you know to find fuel. When the XP Turbo hits low fuel, the gauge fl ashes, but you also get a yellow check engine indicator light, and a limp mode that cuts the engine to barely running. You can clear this limp mode by turning the key off and then back on.

Pay For Premium Or Pay The Price

The new Polaris RZR XP Turbo requires premium gasoline at all mes. It is not merely a sugges on, but truly needed to prevent a meltdown or other heat/detona on related issues. The early XP 1000’s recommended premium gas, but would run on regular. If you put 87 octane in your Turbo, it sets a limp mode that won’t clear without running through an en re tank of premium fuel.

Brake Clean Is The King

4

The name “Carb Cleaner” leaves you thinking it would be the best op on when it comes to cleaning your Carb. If you’re talking about an ATV, Motorcycle, or Side by Side, it’s not! The truth is, that Carb Cleaner is incredibly hard on internal seals and rubber o-rings, but commonly available “Brake Cleaner” spray will do the job without damage.

TIPS & TRICKS

Polaris RZR XP Belt Change Tool

5

A 13 to 15 mm open-end wrench can easily take the place of a misplaced clutch belt tool. The Polaris clutch pry/spanner tool is provided in the tool kit, but they have a tendency to find themselves MIA when it comes me to changing a belt. You can pre y much always find an open end wrench lying around, if not, you might have bigger issues.

Chain Link Second Chance

7

Have you ever come up just a li le short on a chain? Cut it wrong, changed gearing, or maybe even swapped a swing arm? Whatever the case, you can safely double master link a chain, you just need to space them away from each other by adding in a cu ng, and then adding in a length of chain versus just adding a half link. Two back-to-back master links is a recipe for disaster, as they have a tendency to unclip each other.

Blown Belt Removal

6

When a CVT belt lets go at high RPM or speed, you will o en find it shredded and tangled in every direc on around the pulleys. All this belt shrapnel must be removed before installing a fresh belt. The easiest way to do this when the me comes is to be properly prepared. An emergency belt changing kit should include needle nose pliers and a serrated blade of some sort. We have found that a hack saw blade with a duct tape handle works great.

CVT Belt Brake In

8

We’ve brought this up before, but it is ever important as today’s side by sides con nue to get bigger and more powerful. A new CVT belt needs a full break-in before hammering on it, or especially, racing on it. It takes at least twenty to thirty minutes of easy driving at mixed speeds, and staying off the top end to break in a fresh belt. If you race and carry a spare that might be put on during a race, you should definitely think about breaking it in ahead of me as well.

POLARIS RZR XP BUSS BAR POWER HARNESS INSTALL

O

ne of the coolest things about the RZR XP pla orm is Polaris’s focus on accessory integra on. There are hundreds of “Polaris Accessories” already available, and 1000’s more from the a ermarket. Our favorite feature to come from this “focus” on factory integra on has to be the factory supplied “Busbar” conveniently located under the front hood. This easily accessible buss bar, with posts for constant hot, a keyed accessory, and a ground was introduced with the 2014 RZR XP 1000. The Polaris supplied buss bar has power at the keyed igni on accessory post, but the 12V hot and ground need to be addressed. Very low amperage items like LED interior ligh ng can be run directly off the accessory post, but anything with more draw, like a ermarket light bars, GPS, etc., should be set up with a relay switch. You will want to run power and ground directly from the ba ery to the busbar, and then power the accessory from your 12v hot “ba ery” and use the “keyed accessory post” to power the switch in the relay. Polaris sells pre-built wire harnesses for $40 for the “2 seater” and $60 for the “4 seater”. We will show you how simple the Polaris harness install really is, and it is even easier with a two-seat model. In a pinch, you can safely wire this without the Polaris harness, but be sure to use quality 6 AWG wire and the proper size eyelet connectors at both ends. Also be sure to secure your loom away from the drivesha with a couple zip es. Make sure to run both the 12-volt and the ground separately.

1 Start with a clean vehicle, and then remove all four seats, the front hood, and disconnect the positive and negative battery leads.

2 Remove the front center cover by removing the plastic push rivets and the Torx bolts. Push the rubber shifter boot in so that the plastic cover can be lifted off over it. The stock seat belt rubbers can also be pushed in, or you can unstrap a harness to feed it through

3 Remove the rear center cover by pulling the pop rivets and removing the Torx bolts. You will have to unplug the two wires from the 12v accessory plug. Stuff the seat belts through here as well.

4 Stretch out the new harness, starting with the larger eyelets at the battery end. Pay careful attention to proper routing, and don’t connect the Christmas tree push plugs until everything is properly routed, as you won’ be able to easily unhook them.

6 Hook up the negative and positive leads to your battery terminal clamps. The large eyelets will need to go in between the terminal tabs to properly fit, as they are a little too large to go right behind the nut as we would have liked. You could grind the outside of the eyelet for clearance if you want to put them neatly behind the nut.

5 The Polaris harness will route through the cab, right next to the coolant lines, and up to the accessory busbar. Connect the positive to the 12v positive post and the negative to the ground post. This takes a thin wall, deep 3/8 socket and is also where you hook up the positive and ground leads from your accessories. Your relays will get power from the “keyed” accessory post.

7 Reinstall the rear plastic housing cover, plugging in 12v accessory plug wires, the seat belts, Torx bolts and plastic push rivets. Reinstall the front center cover in the same manner. Carefully pull the shifter boot back into its proper place.

8 Make sure all push clips and bolts are installed, then install all four seats, their belts, and the hood. Your busbar will now properly support all your lightning and most any other 12volt accessories. If you are running a winch or a stereo amplifier, it is still recommended to go directly to the battery.

The Polaris plas c push clips can be easily removed by using a pair of side dikes to loosen and remove the inner push pin before removing the clip. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 1

Getting Bright with

Biltrite Y

ou’ve likely heard the old horsepower axiom “there’s no replacement for displacement”. This same line of thinking has typically also held true when it comes to ligh ng up the night trail with accessory lights and bars. Knowing this, we had our doubts when the crew at Biltrite Manufacturing in Minnesota dropped off their latest ligh ng kit at our ATV World o ces. Having told us prior to the gear arriving that these new lights were “way bright”, we were surprised to find a miniscule box no bigger than a loaf of bread perched up against the shop door. Inside we unearthed a pair of their latest Bulli LED lights, complete with wiring harness and accessory Fast-Clamps. At just 4-inches in diameter, one light easily fits in the palm of your hand and can be mounted virtually anywhere your imagina on takes you. Despite their size, the 25-wa unit puts out an impressive 1,500 Lumens of brilliant white light, at a distance up to 1,200 feet. What’s more, the draw for each Bulli is only 2.1 amps. Faced with shortened fall days and plenty of riding le to do, we decided to mount a pair of the Bulli LED lights to our fresh off the assembly line Wildcat Trail.

The Bullitt lights come in two outputs - 10-watt and 25watt. We wanted as much light as possible, so we opted for the brighter units. The lights come with a typical horseshoemounting bracket, but we stepped up to the Fast Clamp, round tube mount shown here. The clamp is both adjustable and features rubber shims for various sized bumper and cage tubes. The clamps make mounting the lights quick and easy.

Biltrite also offers up two types of complete wiring harnesses - single light or double. Each harness is complete with battery hookup connectors and toggle switch. Long enough to mount lights virtually anywhere on the machine, you can simply zip-tie the excess wire up out of the way, meaning there are no wires to splice…simply plug and play.

The lights connect to the harness with a secure and watertight push-on connector.

36

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 1

With the lights mounted to the Fast Clamps, we were able to try out several different locations and finally landed on mounting them directly to the top over structure bar. A good tip is to plug in the harness to the battery so you can have the lights on while trying different mounting locations. We liked how the lights were up out of the way from brush, mud and debris, yet didn’t impact our line of sight from the driver or passenger seats.

With the switch mounted into the rectangular plate, we hooked up the wires on the backside, using plenty of zip ties, while making sure there were no loose wires to get caught on moving parts, or rub against areas that could cause a future failure.

With the lights and Fast Clamps secured to the roll cage, we planned a route for the harness and began to loosely zip tie the wires in place. Keep everything loose at this point until you have the harness completely routed with the switch and battery terminal connections in place. You can then come back and secure the zip ties and trim the ends for a clean install.

With the lights, harness and switch in place, we then routed the remainder of the harness to the battery connection. You can choose to secure the hot lead to a keyed ignition point, or directly to the battery. We went the battery route so we could use the lights when the vehicle is off, knowing the onus will be on us to remember to turn the lights off when not in use.

Probably the trickiest part of the install will be determining where you want to install the round toggle switch. The wires from the switch can be simply pulled off, making it easy to mount. The switch features a plastic retention system and requires a ½” hole, whereby the switch can be simply pushed into place. We choose to use one of the Arctic Cat Trail’s removable rectangular toggle switch covers. We drilled a hole in the middle of the plate to mount the Biltrite switch. Note: the switch has a raised rib on one side to keep the switch from rotating in the hole. Take your time and carefully create a matching notch in the plastic where you’ll be mounting the switch, using a small utility knife to accept the ridge.

The Biltrite harness also comes complete with an in-line fuse wrapped in a watertight rubber case.

With the system hooked up and the wiring harness routed just how we wanted it, we cinched up the zip ties, trimmed the ends and hit the switch. The bright white lights from the twin Bullitt lights easily outshined the standard Wildcat Trail lights. With the vehicle pointing towards the far wall of the shop, we made some final adjustments and tightened up the Bullitt mounts and Fast Clamps.

>> WORCS 2016 2016 and the reality of an OEM turbocharged RZR was a really big deal for Beau, and UTV Racing in general. WORCS took the new turbo op on serious enough to give it its own Pro Class during a separate moto from the conven onal pro 1000 race. This opened the door for top racers like Beau to build both a naturally aspirated and a turbo racecar to compete in throughout the year. As exci ng as racing two different Pro UTV Classes may be, building, racing and maintaining two cars can make for a really busy schedule. If racing two UTV classes, and the Pro ATV class wasn’t enough Beau decided to race the 250 pro motorcycle class in the Big 6 series. When it was me to build to complete racecars for 2016, Beau looked to the same companies and people that had helped him win in the past. The only major sponsor change is that he would be using CST Tires instead of the Maxxis deal he had been on. Beau had been a test rider and racer for Maxxis Tires for quite a while, but he signed on with CSTs for similar du es with their UTV, ATV, and MX res. For the most part, Beau’s two race builds would be handled by Mark Holz of Holz Racing Products. The brand new RZRs get completely disassembled and carefully rebuilt with Holz’s race cage kit and suspension components. Mark is a racer and fabricator himself, and really gives them a personal touch. The a en on to detail at HRP is truly unrivalled. Beau’s program has Mark and HRP building the en re cars, while Sparks Racing handles the motors and Walker Evans takes care of the shocks. The HRP Race Cage kit is constructed with 1.5” Chromoly for superior strength and safety, while keeping weight to a

minimum. The g welded cages feature welded shut door frames with Dzeus fastened aluminum skins and roof. Custom window net moun ng, a bed delete, and relocated radiator mounts are also built into the cages. Holz builds front and rear chromoly bumpers to protect the car against incidental contact. Holz relocates the stock radiator on the non-turbo car to behind the seat, but the notoriously hot tempered Turbo gets a bigger CBR radiator. Holz also relocates the stock intercooler to the passenger seat loca on, and builds custom aluminum scoops to funnel maximum amounts of cooling air into it. The suspension is the same on both the N/A and the Turbo cars. HOLZ installs his proven boxed construc on chromoly trailing arms and a massive HRP Sway bar. The rear radius rods are also replaced with HD HRP units and quality FK heims. The front suspension consists of a HOLZ stock width front A- arm kit, but Mark has re-engineered them for addi onal strength to accommodate the addi onal stress and pressure from the front sway bar. The stock front sway bar is also replaced with a beefy adjustable front mount HRP unit. Holz also installs his billet motor mounts before concentra ng on the inside of the cab and controls. Inside the cab Mark installs an HRP steering quickener, a quick release steering wheel mount and a Joes steering wheel. They fabricate mounts for a lightweight, high-containment SPARCO race seat. One cool thing about ge ng a car delivered back from HRP is that everything just feels right as soon as you sit in it. Being that you’re dealing with a professional racer, the sea ng posi on and controls are perfect and rarely require any adjustment. This kind of a en on to detail really makes a big difference when you’ve got a lot on your plate and don’t want to

Before returning Beau’s cars HRP also installs a super trick, push bu on star ng system. While this may seem insignificant, or merely visual, it is actually a very trick way to bypass the TPS sensor. To combat against the dangers of a stuck thro le, the recent model year UTVs have a safety that won’t allow you to hit the brake with the gas applied. Beau and many other top racers like to be on the Gas and Brake at the same me for both cornering precision, and to load the clutch on the starts. The RZR’s mandated safety feature cuts the igni on when both gas and brake are applied. Mark’s crea ve igni on wiring is the only way around this that we know of. The HRP Suspension kit is comprised of super tough, chromoly components that are actually very close to stock Polaris geometry. The A-arms are the same width as stock with slightly different geometry for improved steering. The rear end comes with stock length, boxed construc on chromoly trailing arms and HD radius rods. Not wan ng to take any chances, Beau switched out his stock axles for RCV Pro Axles that feature custom, oversized 4340 chromoly CVs and hardened 300M axlesha s. These are currently the toughest known CV axles on the market, and while they cost a pre y penny, they offer a 90 day, 100% sa sfac on guarantee. They have also recently won races in SCORE, BITD, and the King of the Hammers. We know Beau has what it takes to win another championship, and it looks like he’s ge ng the new car bugs worked out. Both cars are working really well, and we hope to see him back on top for the rest of the season.

atvworld A er doing a li le research, it turns out the area in and around the “legendary” races was home to a spider web of off-road trails, many of which were designated for ATVs. In these parts, width restric ons limit the use of side-bysides unless they fall within the 50-inch maximum width. With a new Arc c Cat Wildcat Trail in the ATV World stable, it provided the perfect opportunity to spend a day in the saddle of Cat’s newest and most nimble side-by-side.

One of the best things about side-bysides is that you don’t have to go at it alone. No ma er the des na on or the terrain, sharing the riding experience with friends always trumps the sheer thrill of the ride in our book. So, our pal John Sandberg, who taps the keys and captures images for his Arc cInsider website, along with his son Cal, joined me for a day of hog-wild fun.

We unloaded our pair of Wildcat Trail machines just across the street from our final destination for the day. John couldn’t wait for the evening’s festivities, and promptly broke out a few slabs of bacon to get in the mood.

The Foot Hills State Forest provided us with an abundance of twisting trails, most of which wind their way around Spider Lake. The area has been a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts in Minnesota for several years, but fell under hard times as many users disrespected the area, leaving behind trash and excessive damage. Fortunately, organized clubs and the state ATVUTV association, in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources, have done a tremendous job of cleaning up the area through hard work and educating current users to respect the land and to stay on designated trails. The riding area was in tip-top shape when we visited. Geared up and smelling of smoked meat, we departed north.

With the explosion in popularity of side-by-sides, more and more areas are loosening riding restrictions, allowing users to navigate gravel roads and logging trails to gain access and link up to other riding areas. Because of this, we were able to ride directly from our drop point and hammered down our Wildcats on a 10-mile stretch of gravel road.

Trails ranged from logging roads, wide enough for full-sized big rigs, (which we encountered) to narrow, tree-lined paths that undulated up and over the hilly terrain in the area. The Wildcat Trail proved to the be the perfect vehicle for the area, offering up comfort, speed and stability on the wider sections, and nimble, precise handling for when things got tight.

The buzz in the industry always seems to center around big power and big suspension. We found the Wildcat Trail to never come up short in either category. The 700 twin has an abundant amount of torque for quick acceleration and the combination of 10-inches of ground clearance, 10-inches of travel, and more trail compliant calibrations, was both incredibly capable and comfortable.

Used to be 50-inch side-by-sides were a bit unpredictable in high speed turns, but the Wildcat Trail touts a low center of gravity, including a very low seating position. This, in turn allows you to hammer the turns with the same confidence of a wider stance buggy.

With a loose schedule for the day, and having already logged nearly 100-miles on the odometer, we took a break for some impromptu wrist rocket target practice. In the end, Cal completely schooled his “old-man” with bull’s eye accuracy… chock one up for the youth and better eyesight.

Hungry, I immediately shoved a handful into my mouth…it was after that I discovered the ingredients.

While I typically prefer a good pork chop, John broke out the next best thing…pig-in-a-bag pork rinds.

On the way back, John took over navigation duties and handed the wheel over to his son. We immediately took three wrong turns, much to the chagrin of Cal.

When we finally did arrive back, the line was already forming for the evening’s big pig rally.

Before loading up and performing a wet-wipe shower, we took the obligatory group shot at the city limits sign. On Friday and Saturday nights during the summer months, Leader’s population explodes from approximately 23 to around 300.

Frankly, we weren’t sure what to expect at the races. Thinking it might be a full on beer swilling party, we were surprised to learn that it was instead a family fun night, with scores of families packing the stands and intermission games for everyone, especially the kids.

Before the racing commenced, we met the master of ceremonies and pig race director. As he directed us to the best seats available, we could literally hear the squeals of the competitors as they were getting staged.

John became an immediate fan…um groupie…as he nuzzled up to one of the up and coming stars of the LA Pig Race circuit.

The moment we had been waiting for had finally arrived, as the first heat of racers burst from the gate. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 1

Between races, cowgirls keep the boisterous fans entertained. This was our cue to order up a full order of pulled pork sandwiches.

The small grill and bar in Leader holds pig races June through August on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sundays they feature a meat raffle…coincidence?

On this day, youth reigned supreme as Cal not only unraveled John’s incorrect route within the Foot Hills State Forest, and proved to have incredible aim, but he also nailed the winner in the evening’s main event hog run.

Given how cool we really think the ACE is, we really don’t see that many out in the wild compared to the overly popular UTVs. Finding a fully built ACE out on the trail seems to be even tougher. A er scouring the trails for one of these elusive machines, we decided we’d be er just build our own. We called on our buddy Kalani Corn of Dunetech Offroad to devise a plan. Kalani also works at WARN winches and as it happened, they were in need of a fresh build for their new catalog as well. Kalani has done some pre y over the top builds in the past, but we decided this one should be kept simple and obtainable. We started with an ACE 570, as the smaller bore model was a li le tame for our liking, but the 570 in a vehicle that size seems to be plenty fast enough. We also had plans for the WORCS 600cc, single seat UTV class. The one hiccup was a 12 year age requirement, as our resident test rider “Sebas an” was only eleven. We decided on an adventure build with a “race” conversion planned for it in the near future. As for tes ng and photoshoots, Kalani’s son Keoni Corn eagerly agreed to be the stunt double.

60

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 1

THE BUILD

The heart of the build started with a custom Dunetech Cage. This was their first ACE cage, so they experimented with a few different lines and ideas before choosing the final product. The “semiradius” cage is made of high strength DOM tubing, and it integrates smoothly into the included rear bumper. Once Kalani was happy with the cage, they built a jig for easier replica on, should any of you want one. The next part of the build was to design fully func oning doors. The Dunetech Doors are made with steel tubing frames and stylish aluminum door panels that fl ow with the ACE’s bodylines perfectly. The cage and door frames are powder coated a semi-gloss black, and the aluminum skins are a ached with polished stainless steel hardware. As we men oned earlier, Warn was looking for a fresh Powersports pla orm for their latest catalog, and they jumped at our ACE. Seeing that the Polaris ACE front end is exactly the same as a Sportsman, they already had an ultrafunc onal winch-mount bumper for it. The WARN bumper is made of fl at plate steel with the tell-tail, tubing top hoop to protect the winch. We opted for it in the

It is truly one of the nicest, most refined winches you can find same semi-gloss black as the cage and doors. Our WARN winch bumper is equipped with a top of the line ProVantage-S winch. If you ever find yourself in need of a winch, this is without ques on the one to have. It’s as reliable as you could ever imagine, and its three-stage, planetary gear train provides smooth and e cient opera on. The ProVantage features 50’ of synthe c rope and corrosion-resistant hardware, and a fully sealed motor and drive train. It is truly one of the nicest, most refined winches you can find, and WARN backs it with a limited life me, and 3 year electrical warranty. At the me of our build, WARN was in the middle of private labeling some very high quality LED ligh ng, and they equipped “Big Blue” with a very nice 20” light bar and two LED pods on the A pillars. As it turns out, they might have scrapped the ligh ng project, but our ACE sure wouldn’t know it at night! We were looking for a super tough re that could handle anything we could

THE OUTCOME The final outcome is a very clean, unique looking ACE that will be perfectly at home on any trail, in the dunes, or even a racecourse. The Dunetech cage and doors adds a level of safety and style that could never be touched with the stock components. The WARN bumper provides the ideal moun ng loca on for the winch, and with WARN’s legendary reliability, it will always be ready and wai ng when you need it. We also loved the WARN led ligh ng, and while unfortunately, they aren’t going to be available, we know our friends over at LazerStar Lights would be happy to set you up with a comparable set-up. The ITP Blackwater Evolu on res are also a major improvement over the mild mannered stockers. The aggressive tread pa ern finds trac on anywhere, yet s ll provides an unbelievably smooth ride on hardpack trails. While our ACE looks like a million bucks, it is actually very obtainable and func onal. The ACE’s automo ve-like controls, and ultra-low seat height make the ACE a lot less in mida ng than most ATVs or UTVs, and ours s ll features these traits. Our ACE is proving to be great addi on to the fl eet; we have a blast with it year round, and it’s possibly the perfect vehicle for introducing new people into our sport.

Mudder >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> INLAW TIRE

The name alone is one of the reasons we needed to feature this re. The tag line used to describe this re is “Mean, Big, and Nasty”…well played marke ng guys, that is a good one. The second reason is to let you know that the very popular Mudder Inlaw Tire is now available in a 28” size. What makes the Mudder Inlaw Tire so popular is the fact that not only are they a very aggressive mud re with the deep 2” lugs, but they also offer up a smooth run on hard pack surfaces. Which is not the norm for big mudders. The aggressive tread pa ern also wraps around down the sidewall to give extra trac on in the deep ruts. Here’s Mud In Your Ear

he reddish ribbons spiraled in a dizzying dance as they eventually found their way to the center of the shower floor… circling tighter and tighter before disappearing. Steam filled the thick air as I worked the soap over the splotches of dried dirt on my forearms and neck. Eventually the water began to clear as I eliminated the f inal r em na n ts o f An d e rs o n ’ s creek bed from my skin. Certainly the narrow land-bridge across the creek near his cabin appeared to be crusted over, at least upon first approach. However, once the front wheel was engulfed into the sweet smelling goo, I knew our ride was about to get interesting. In all, it took about two hours to get across the seemingly dried-up creek… another hour to find a way back across, plus throw in another 45-minutes spent laughing hysterically at our predicament. Our planned 80-mile spring ride got cut well short…about 40-miles short to be exact, but man what a day! Looking like a rag tag group of zombies who just unearthed themselves

from a sewage pond, our brightly colored vehicles and riding gear were now perfectly matched in a hue of thick, black goo. Only by our smiles and wideeyed expressions could you tell us apart, as we howled in laughter over the day’s mishaps. I was reminded of that ride, and others like it recently as warmer weather has begun to greet my office window in the mornings. The piles of snow outside are starting to transform into mud puddles and soon, some of those winter snowmobile trails will be become off-road trails. For the record, mud riding has never been my “thing”. Perhaps it’s the afterride scene that steers me clear of the trail puddles, rain soaked fields and the not-so-dry creek beds. After all, mud by its very definition is dirty, and having to spend the better part of an afternoon cleaning what was once a showroom fresh ATV can be a strong deterrent for me, not to mention dislodging mud from near impossible-to-reach nooks and crannies inside my ears. How the heck mud gets in there with a helmet on remains one of those great off-

roading mysteries. Despite my distaste for mud, sometimes it is unavoidable and I’ve learned how to better prepare for a day in the “bog”. The aftermarket has plenty of goodies for those who love the muck, from lift kits and tires to radiator relocation kits and snorkels. There’s a long list of upgrades and modifications you can apply to your vehicle to make it “mud ready”. Once your machine is ready, you should be as well. No question, you will get dirty, but a good pair of boots or custom waders, and an older helmet, or one with a removable liner and other mud riding tips will have you ready to get dirty…really dirty. Heck, even the manufacturers have gotten into the mix by offering up mudspecific vehicles, complete with many of the aftermarket upgrades already installed, allowing you to get in real deep, and more importantly, make it back out again. All in all, I’ve become quite adept at getting dirty, and even discovered some new-found riding skills to better attack and overcome the muddy depths. While we all love the performance, technology and adventure associated with today’s latest ATVs and side-bysides, it’s often not the real reason why we ride. Instead, most of us ride to spend time with others, be it family, friends, or even those who we’ve met for the first time who share a love for offroad riding, just like ourselves. It’s these shared passions that connect us, and it’s the shared experiences that fulfill us. As for mud…well I haven’t found another riding adventure that connects a bunch of off-road enthusiasts quicker than trying to extract 10-vehicles from a muddy creek bottom on a warm spring day. By days end, everyone has a nickname and the stories and laughs from such a ride stick with you for years to come…just like the mud still in my ears. Spring riding is here and it’s time to get dirty!
