THE TORTOISE & THE HARE
I
arrived one early spring morning, prepared for a wet Saturday’s ride with our usual crew and a new addition to our crowd, my 4-year-old son Eric. We were greeted with a chuckle and the option to chose our off-road vehicle for the day. When you already know it’s going to be a ridiculously wet day with pond like conditions on the trail, and have a little guy next to you, you chose wisely…! Immediately I walked over to the Argo that was sitting next to the side-by-sides in the shop. On a day like this, it’s very possible that the Argo could be the most fun, if not more cool, (and dry) on such a wet spring morning. I wasn’t sure how the ride was going to play out, but when we all ventured out, my co-pilot and I decided, after being passed by everyone on the trail’s first turn that we’d settle in and play sweeper for the group. Eric helped me navigate through the heavy mud, and we carefully planned our routes over severely rutted out areas that seemed to be taking us a little longer then expected. Soon we could see the real obstacle ahead,
The only dry trail we found all day. 8

as we were now faced with pond like conditions across the trail, and some very messy crossings we’d need to conquer. As we crept up on each of the swollen ponds, we sat tight and pushed forward, gently finding our footings. The guys aboard the side-by-sides would fall back, hovering around the edges, and pandemonium would strike when one would become stuck in the bush, and jammed up between trees on the edge of the COLD spring water holes. One of the ATVs in the group was on the other side of the pond. He had driven straight through, and needless to say, Eric was in awe of the machine being caked in mud and drenched in sour water. They put on a great show for Eric, probably one of our best and funniest rides we’ve had since we were all fearless 20 year olds. I watched my buddies in the side-by-sides and ATVs try to keep a more mature and “clean” approach, but once one dipped in, they all threw caution to the wind, and drove in a little deeper. That being said, the Argo would plow through anything and everything we
encountered. We may not have been as fast, but our time was consistent. We didn’t have to mess around in the woods, we would drive right where the trail was supposed to be, and did I mention dry… Eric was safe and warm, his blanket was dry, and I could tell he was having a great day. Over the course of the day, the group caught up to us and passed us, and we went back and forth a few times. When we all rode back to the trucks, we rolled in right behind the second guy I will add… all made possible due to the type of terrain. When we were loading up, some of us were covered in mud, some had soakers from the waist down, and then some of us were dry, smiling, and full of granola bars and juice boxes...I think I chose wisely. In the truck on the way home, just before my son fell asleep, he said that we were like the turtle in the book that raced the rabbit. I thought that was a great way to tell people of our morning’s ride. It’s a ride he won’t forget anytime soon, and I’m sure for show and tell at school, he’s going to ask me to drive the ARGO in… hmmm.

In mid-April, Textron Off-Road held a small gathering in an airplane hangar in Texas to give a handful of dealers in attendance and other watching via live stream a glimpse into what the future holds. Just a month prior we learned Arctic Cat was acquired by Textron Industries and with the news came more questions than answers. While many Arctic Cat loyalists deemed the move to be a good one, giving the Cat brand greater ability to develop future models packed with innovations, others took a wait and see approach. During the hour-long presentation, Textron officials announced the Arctic Cat off-road division would be blended with Textron Off-Road, subsequently dropping the Arctic Cat nameplate from all models, but retaining model names such as Wildcat, Prowler, and Alterra. Joining this mix would be the Textron Off-Road Stampede model. In addition, Textron officials gave a first look at a future model that looks to be a direct competitor with the Polaris General and Can-Am Commander. The nameless vehicle shown here will tout more than 100-horsepower, KING shocks, bucket seats, an extended cab design for greater storage, and still more storage and capability with the integrated rear cargo box. The model is slated to be available at dealerships in the fall of 2017. The company also announced the muchanticipated Wildcat XX won’t be available until the spring of 2018.

TEXTRON SPECIALIZED VEHICLES OUTLINES THE FUTURE 05 WITH ARCTIC CAT AT DEALER EVENT Textron Specialized Vehicles Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced to its dealer network its plan for growth as it incorporates Arctic Cat into the company, including its future powersports brand portfolio, and a tease of new and upcoming products across its snowmobile, side-by-side and ATV product lines. Company President and CEO Kevin Holleran welcomed a select gathering of employees and dealers in Texas, and outlined the value and synergies that Arctic Cat and Textron bring to each other. Arctic Cat joins a portfolio of Textron brands and products that includes not just E-Z-GO golf cars and Textron Off Road side-by-sides, but also Cessna and Beechcraft fixed-wing aircraft, Bell helicopters, Greenlee professional tools, Kautex automotive fuel systems, and many other leading products in industries across the globe, Holleran said. The iconic Arctic Cat brand, built on decades of performance and leadership in snowmobiles, will remain in use on the company’s innovative, high-performance snowmobile product lines. Arctic Cat’s legacy and heritage in side-by-sides and ATVs will also live on in the powerful Alterra™, Wildcat™ and Prowler™ products, which will join Textron Off Road’s existing Stampede® side-by-side in the company’s family of off-road vehicles. The decision to rebrand side-by-sides and ATVs under the Textron Off Road name was not taken lightly, Collins said, and was the result of consultation and research with consumers and dealers that showed that the Textron Off Road brand

offered the best opportunity for future growth across all regions, particularly outside of the snow belt. Collins revealed a sneak peek of the next Textron Off Road-branded sideby-side, to be released this fall. As yet unnamed, this new “crossover” vehicle will bridge the gap between utility sideby-sides and sport models, with 100-plus horsepower, a class-leading suspension set apart by King Shocks, bucket seats and an extended cab with industryleading, usable storage. In addition, Collins announced more details of the next-generation Wildcat sport side-by-side, the Wildcat XX, which will be released in spring 2018. Powered by a 998cc triple engine generating 125hp, the Wildcat XX will also feature a suspension with King shocks and 18inches of suspension travel, 30-inch tires on 15-inch KMC wheels, and full doors. Collins also outlined the tremendous opportunity that E-Z-GO models offer the dealer network, by bringing to the powersports dealer a new customer base seeking the brand’s line of personal golf cars and transportation vehicles. Textron’s engineering expertise and resources will accelerate the pace of technological innovation in Arctic Cat’s already groundbreaking snowmobiles, said Erik Nelson, TSV president and general manager, snow and international. Nelson stressed that
the Arctic Cat brand will always live on in the company’s snow products. New snowmobiles such as the M 8000 and ZR 8000, with the new 800cc C-TEC2 two-stroke twin engine, and the ZR200 youth model, are generating strong interest from enthusiasts in advance of the winter season, Nelson said. The event took place in an airplane hangar at Fort Worth’s Alliance Airport, where an extensive display of Textron products underscored the company’s technological DNA and marketing might. Arctic Cat products stood alongside the Textron Off Road Stampede side-byside and an array of E-Z-GO personal transportation vehicles. Flanking the stage were a Bell 407GXP helicopter and the Textron AirLand Scorpion, a tactical jet aircraft designed for a variety of roles and missions, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), maritime control, close air support, armed reconnaissance and pilot training.

T THE SCORE INTERNATIONAL SAN FELIPE 250 The 31st running of Score Internationals San Felipe 250 was April 1st and the ATV WORLD crew was on hand to document it, and help a few good friends with their race effort. The race consists of a 250 mile lap around the sandy, desert surrounding San Felipe, using much of the same course year after year. While the SF 250 is typically the shortest Score race of the year, it’s whooped out, rough and rocky nature can make it the toughest as well.

CAN-AM MAVERICK X3 X RS
Fierce is what comes to mind for the Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS. By widening the stance not only has it improved the look but also the suspension travel, giving it 24 inches of travel with its advanced Fox racing and all new four link TTX suspension. The Rotax ACE engine produces 154hp and 113ft-lb of torque, 0-60 MPH in 4.9 seconds! Can-Am has integrated a high performance QRS-X CVT system that eliminates lag giving no torque interruption and has advanced airflow through its three oversized intakes, which feeds the engine with clean and cool air to maximise power.
TURBOCHARGER
When it comes to the performance side, we tend to always think of turbochargers and their ability to increase power and performance to basically any vehicle with an engine, even your ATV if you have the nuts (and bolts) to do it. A turbocharger is a turbine driven induction that forces air into the combustion chamber increasing efficiency and power output. With the increase of air also comes the increase of fuel in the chamber causing a larger combustion and atmospheric pressure, giving you that edge over a stock engine. I don’t always whistle at the ladies, but when I do, it’s with my turbo.

You
have probably heard the old saying that the older you get, the faster ধme goes by. I think I first heard it when I was about 15 years old. Well now that I am 55+ I can vouch for its validity. Time does seem to speed up each decade. Twenty to thirty was fast, thirty to forty faster, forty to fiđ y was a blur and so far the pace to sixty is downright scary. I was menধoning these facts to some of my students in class one day and one menধoned that the speed/ধme relaধonship was simply related to a math equaধon. I was intrigued so I asked him to explain. He stated that each day of our life is a smaller fracধon than the previous day. These were his examples. Our first year of life, each day is 1/364, at 10 years each day is 1/3640 of our life, at 30 the fracধon is 1/10,920 and at my current age……….well let’s just say that it was geষng too scary to think about. If anyone knows how to slow ধme down, please let me know. So, being the age I have previously menধoned, I have been blessed with a granddaughter who is now 6 years old. I think she even thinks that I am cool and enjoys helping me out with any task that I am doing when she comes to visit her grandma and me. She also really likes going for rides with me in our Honda Pioneer SXS. Actually she has always enjoyed riding something with an engine and 2 years ago I bought her a baħery operated ATV and told her when she turned 6 I would get her a real ATV that she could drive. Well, she reminded me of this fact a couple of weeks ago, and I told her that once we got the OK from her mom than grandma…… we would need to do some research to see which one would work best for us and when I say us, I mean her. She said OK as long as she could get a blue one. Hmmm. So my next quesধon to Gwennie was, besides being blue what did she want her ATV to do. The next answer didn’t surprize me at all. It had to go fast like Granddad’s. I guess like mother, like daughter, but a throħle control to prevent anymore grey hair on Granddad was a must. When I asked what else, Gwen said she didn’t know because she didn’t know a lot about ATV’s at age six. I suggested that we go take a look at Granddad’s Outlander and see if that gives her any ideas. The first thing that came to Gwen’s aħenধon as a “must have” was a starter buħon, so electric start had to be part of the deal. Next was a brake pedal because that made it easy for her to “hit the brakes” she said and because the handlebar levers were too hard for her hands to pull. I

definitely will be looking for ergonomically designed controls for li le hands and fingers. I was caught off guard with the next request but laughed because her mother had asked for the same thing on her first ATV. Gwen did not like the thro le thumb lever; she wanted a “twisty” one like on granddad’s motorcycle. I told her I would see what I could do once we buy an ATV but at the ATV store they would only come with the thumb lever. Con nuing on, a couple more things were added to the “must have list” and I was star ng to wonder if my idea of using my Outlander as a guide was such a good idea or not. (lol) Gwennie thought that reverse and headlights would be good things to have to have and of course a trunk for snacks and drinks would finish off her dream machine. I guess all in all, not too bad of a list to achieve. Overall here is what we would be looking for (my choices and Gwennie’s): (i) Blue if possible, (ii) Thro le limiter and tether cord, (iii) Electric start with a back-up manual starter, (iv) Brake pedal and child sized levers and controls, (v) CVT and reverse transmission, (vi) Headlights, taillights and a brake light (vii) Quiet exhaust, (viii) Four stroke engine, (ix) Safety flag and whip (Gwennie saw this while we were at the Polaris shop) (x) Full floorboards and last but certainly not least, (xi) available accessories like a storage trunk. So our search began. For reasons of personal preference I limited the brands to Can-Am, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Polaris and Arc c Cat. I have to say that this is the first me in about 15 years that I have taken a serious look at the Youth ATV line-up by the above men oned manufacturers. The last mini ATV’s I bought were Suzuki LT 80’s that both my kids grew up on. These were great bullet proof machines that unfortunately were another an 2-stroke casualty of the new 4 stroke era. I was however really impressed with the op ons that my granddaughter had available to her now and what she will
have access to when she gets a li le older, especially the wide range of Youth vehicles that Polaris has developed. I am sure I am going to end up owning a Razor 120 or ACE 150 some me in the not so distant future. The seven manufacturers I checked out made it hard to come up with a decision, but a er many
discussions over Chicken McNuggets and fries, it was decided we would buy the Can-Am DS 90, with the Yamaha Raptor 90 and Suzuki Quadsport LTZ90 as close contenders. This task was definitely more in depth than I thought it would be and I can’t wait to do it again.
I could see many of the design features that I liked on the LT 80s that I owned in the mid-nineties. Solid machine for young riders.
This is a well built Youth oriented machine. Yamaha has done a great job designing and putting this model together with smaller riders in mind. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 1

Instead of turning off the key to reset an EPS fault, many savvy Polaris RZR racers will wire a push button switch inline to the EPS power wire. This is especially useful when running a steering quickener or bigger tires, as they tend to throw the fault more often.
A quick peak at these super smart Thermax Irreversible Temperature stickers can tell you exactly how hot things like your transmission, shocks, and differentials are getting. INSTALLING THE K&N AIRCHARGER INTAKE ON A POLARIS RZR XP 1000
K&N
has always said they would not sell an intake kit unless it made a serious, usable HP increase. We’ve been asking for a K&N XP 1000 intake for years, only to hear that same response. When our K&N guy Johnny Jump called us last month, he was as excited as we were to introduce a brand new complete K&N Aircharger Intake system that installs in an hour and makes 3.3 HP on the Dyno. We laid out the install for you, and honestly, it couldn’t be more straight-forward. It takes a little short of an hour and only a few simple hand tools. This install was on a non-turbo XP 1000, but the XP Turbo install looks to be an almost identical process.
2 Remove all 8 torx bolts from the plastic panel behind the seat. With all bolts removed, pull back the lower corners to gain access and remove the two air filter housing bolts.
1 Remove both seats from the RZR, place them out of your way, and then disconnect the negative lead from the battery.

3 Remove the engine cover and then loosen and remove the two hose clamps that secure fresh air and clean air ducts to the filter housing. Remove the air filter housing from the vehicle.
4 Use a flat blade screwdriver to loosen the clamp securing the vent hose to your stock intake tube, then wiggle it off.
6 Install long hose clamps through the filter base plate and then install it on top of the stock heat shield. You will need to remove the two stock bolts/nuts from the heat shield, and then reinstall provided hardware through filter base plate, heat shield and frame mount. Back of plate will pick up the mounting bolt-holes from step 2.
8 Install the two 6mm studs into the radius filter adapter. Be sure to use a drop of the provided thread locker on each stud.
5 Loosen the hose clamp at the plenum and remove the bolt securing the stock intake tube to the frame. Remove the intake tube from the vehicle. Be sure to wipe the inside of plenum clean of any dust or debris.
7 Re-install 6 of the 8 bolts removed in step 2. You will leave out the middle two that went into the stock air filter housing.
9 Install the radius filter adapter into the K&N air filter and secure it with the provided hose clamp. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 1

10 Install the filter and adapter plate assembly into the K&N filter canister and secure with the provided hardware. These will be locking nuts with washers and won’t need thread lock.
12 Install the filter canister assembly onto mounting tray, connect fresh air inlet hose, adjust for best fit and then tighten the hose clamps.
14 Install the crank case breather vent tube back onto new intake tube fitting and secure with hose clamp. Replace engine cover, hook up the battery ground lead and install the seats.

11 Install the end cap into the end cap and secure with the provided hardware. It will be small Allen bolts with washers.
13 Install the coupler hoses onto the air filter adapter and factory plenum. Secure with provided hose clamps, install the plastic vent tube fitting into intake tube, and then install intake tube. Tighten clamps at canister and plenum.
15 Road Test! You will want to start the engine and listen for any air leaks or odd noises. Test drive while listening for any odd noises or rattles and fix as necessary. System should function just like the stock system, only louder and more responsive.

MITCH GUTHRIE
JR.
Championship bloodlines or not, winning the STARTED HIS OWN MINT 400 is no easy task, and twenty year old CAREER AS ONE OF Mitch Guthrie Jr. has just done just that. Mitchie’s THE FASTEST KIDS dad, Mitch Guthrie Sr. has had a successful, proCOMPETING IN THE TROPHY KART CL ASS fessional rock crawling career since the late 90’s winning the Pro Rock Championship in 2004. Mitch then started racing King of the Hammers, winning the first one in a RZR 800 in 2009. Mitch Jr. began co-piloting with dad in the RZR, and the duo has won the KOH UTV overall six times. 2016 was Mitchie’s first attempt at BITD desert racing, but he was no stranger to the Podium. Mitch Guthrie Jr. started his own career as one of the fastest kids competing in the Trophy Kart class at the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series. After winning a TORC Championship in the 250cc Modified Kart class, Guthrie Racing moved over to the WORCS series to race UTVs. Mitch Jr. won the Production 1000 Class in 2013, and then the Unlimited Class Championship in 2015. A couple of WORCS Championships was all it took to leave Mitchie looking for a new challenge. That challenge was undoubtedly the Desert, as they decided to put forth a serious attempt at the Best In The Desert series for 2016. With Polaris Factory backing, Guthrie Racing looked to Lone Star Racing to build them a full blown BITD desert car, based on the 2016 4 Seat RZR XP Turbo.

LSR HAS BEEN PERFECTING THEIR RZR XP SET-UP FOR YEARS.
THE BUILD The Guthries started their build with the new 2016 RZR XP Turbo 4. HP wise, the RZR Turbo was in a class of its own at this point, and the longer wheelbase and extra room of a four seat chassis is the only way to go in the desert. The longer wheelbase not only seems to help straighten out the whoops, but also provides a lot of additional stability in higher speed situations. The additional room where your rear passengers would be sitting, offers an ideal location for a larger fuel cell, batteries, clean air system, spare parts, etc. Lone Star Racing has the four-seat BITD chassis build and desert suspension set-up down to a science. They have been perfecting and proving it with successful racers like Branden Sims and Johnny Angal for the past few seasons.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 1
The Lone Star Chassis utilized their own +3” per side, long travel, tig welded, Chromoly suspension components. The bottom of the car is protected with the same Factory UTV 3/8” thick UHMW skid plate that they sell to Joe Blow off the street, and believe it or not, they hold up for seasons of abuse in the desert. Guthrie Racing chose to use long time sponsor, Walker Evans for their Velocity Series shocks. The Guthries have a great relationship with Walker Evans, and they continually test and tune for the best possible set up throughout the year. The original car was set up with 15” Walker Evans beadlock wheels and a 32X10-15 ITP Ultracross R Spec tire. The taller tire smooths out the rough and provides a little more of that much needed ground clearance on the long wheelbase car.
THE GUTHRIES HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH WALKER EVANS, AND THEY CONTINUALLY TEST AND TUNE FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE SET UP THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

atvworld The ITP Ultracross tire is a proven winner with incredible durability and long-wear characteristics. Mitchie runs these with the TireBalls Run-Flat system to ensure they will never lose a race due to a flat. Guthrie Racing uses Rugged Radios for communications with their Vertex radio set-up and RRP 6100 Intercom. They also supply their own Parker Pumper style Fresh Air Pump that is a single highflow unit designed for two passengers. Baja Designs takes care of the lighting for the night races with their XL80 LED lights and rear race lighting. The XP Turbo is a little short on available wattage, so they try and keep it as simple as possible, without any extra unnecessary draw. They use an Odyssey Extreme Series battery for some extra reserve, and the UTV INC remote alternator for the night races where additional lighting is necessary. Cooling is a major issue when racing an RZR XP Turbo in the warmer desert
climates. The stock Polaris set up has the engine radiator and the turbo stacked in front of each other. This works for a mild climate, but when it’s high 90s, or pushing 100 degrees, the air that has already traveled through the first radiator is pretty darn hot before reaching the second one. Another issue is that they are plumbed inline, running the same coolant through both systems. In other words, as the engine temp rises, so does the Turbo cooling system, and it needs to be kept cool to produce HP. The Guthries worked with their friend, Shannon Campbell to build a completely custom cooling system, using both stock and CBR radiator components. The radiators are separated on the car, and they are plumbed completely separately as well. After battling with the R&D part of this last year, Mitchie now has a car that can run a cool 180 degrees, under any load and in the hottest of climates.
THE RADIATORS ARE SEPARATED ON THE CAR, AND THEY ARE PLUMBED COMPLETELY SEPARATELY AS WELL.
POLARIS NEW CAR FOR 2017 Polaris was busy improving any and all of the issues they had on the 16 Turbo, and they released a completely updated 17 model XP Turbo. The newest XP Turbo saw a substantial increase in HP, better cooling, new clutches and bigger CVs. For the average customer, Polaris has essentially built a car that needs little to nothing to perform at an amazing level. For Guthrie racing, there were 2017 improvements that couldn’t be overlooked, but they already had a ton of time, money and effort in perfecting their 2016 race car. The decision was to keep their complete roller, and swap the motor, drive train, electronics, etc. While rebuilding their racer into a 17’, they made a few other key changes as well. They took on SuperATV as a sponsor and swapped over to their new Rhino 2.0 CV Axles. They also put together a deal with DWT and swapped out the wheels for their new Sector Zeros, a 15” billet center wheel, with a true zero

2016 BITD
QUITE POSSIBLY THE YOUNGEST TEAM TO EVER WIN THE INFAMOUS MINT 400!
LOOK OUT
Guthrie Racing showed up in Parker ready to win. Last year’s car was looking like brand new again, only with a year of R&D under it. Mitchie moved through to the front of the pack like we knew he could, but the difference was staying there ‘til the checkers. With no CV Axle problems, no clutching issues and no over-heating, Mitch Guthrie Jr. had his first BITD overall UTV win at the 2017 opener. With their eyes on the Mint 400, the team stayed focused on prepping and

making any other little improvements to perfect the car for the longer race. Mitchie was the first UTV off the line for the infamous and highly contested Mint 400. A record setting 106 UTV teams raced the 2017 Mint 400, and 105 of them were starting behind 20 year old Mitch Guthrie Jr. BITD starts two cars at a time, and Guthrie won the drag race into the first corner, and he never looked back. They had a flawless race and pulled a substantial lead on the rest of the field.

They had one planned, long pit to tighten up anything on the car and just motored for the rest of the race, besting the 2nd place Murray brothers CAN AM team by almost 22 minutes. Winning the Mint 400 is often compared to the Super Bowl by many OffRoad Racers, and Mitch Guthrie Jr. had just accomplished it in his second year of desert racing. After a big weekend of celebrating, the team went right back to work, looking to keep the win streak alive at the upcoming UTV World Championship. At this year’s UTV WC, all eyes were on Mitch Guthrie Jr., and he was ass ready as he’d ever be. As they say in all forms of MotorSports, “It’s racing, not
winning, or everybody would be doing it”. Just as everything was laying out for a perfect season, the #951 Guthrie Racing RZR blew a motor while pushing for the lead on the first lap! Mitchie is taking the defeat in stride, and is already busy fixing and making changes for the next one. The next BITD desert race for UTVs is actually not until August, but it’s the long one; five hundred and fifty miles from Las Vegas to Reno, with racing taking place on the valley floor and up into the pine trees at almost 8,000 feet. This race is almost always won with the perfect set-up, a rock solid vehicle, and a lot of luck. Guthrie Racing will be there, and without a doubt, ready to win!

THE NEW 570 S BRINGS SPORTY HANDLING WITH EFFICIENCY AND ENTRY LEVEL PRICING The Polaris RZR 570 is a very cool li le machine, especially in its element. O en over-looked, or maybe even discredited by its smaller displacement tle, it’s actually very impressive in a ghter, or heavily wooded trail system. The single cylinder RZR 570 was the replacement for the RZR 800. The 570 motor is lighter, more responsive, more reliable, and more fuel efficient than its inline twin predecessor. On the Dyno, the 45 hp ProStar 570 is actually only short 5 HP from the RZR 800 power plant.

he release of the 50” trail width 570 pre y much ended the need for a RZR 800 in the model lineup, but what about the RZR 800 S? The RZR 800 S was a factory upgraded RZR 800 that got plus 5” arms, adjustable Fox shocks, and EPS. At the me, if you wanted a wider performance car, you would be throwing away the stock stuff and buying A Arms, Axles, Brake Lines, and shocks. The S model brought this to the dealership floor at a couple grand more than the base model, for a big savings over doing it yourself.

NOT EVERYBODY REALLY NEEDS, NOR CAN USE A 100 HP MACHINE.
Polaris was already killing it with XP 900 sales, and the S model was pre y much le by the wayside. The RZR XP 900 was quickly replaced by the RZR XP 1000, so performance further improved, HP increased, and so did the price point of entering the sport RZR market. Polaris released a RZR 900 S, and then a 1000 S with quite a bit of success, but in reality they are s ll closing in on a 20K price tag, and not everybody really needs, nor can use a 100 HP machine.

The 570 S
Along comes the 570 S like the 800 S’ revival from the dead. The 570 S is s ll based on the original 800 chassis like the 570. This helps keep the cost down and truthfully, the 800 chassis was really good anyways. Like the 800 S, the 570 S gets a front end that is 5 inches wider per side, for a trail width of 60”s (152 cm). This provides a ton of stability in comparison with the 50-inch wide model which is a tradeoff, depending on whether your trail system includes 50”max ATV trails. If your riding is wider trails, tracks, and/or dirt roads, you will absolutely appreciate the extra width. While Polaris was designing the 570 S, they took it one step further than the 800 S. The 570 S model also gets an extra 4 inches of wheelbase, where the 800, 800 S, and 570 only had 77”, the 570 S gets 81”. This addi onal wheelbase really helps with high-speed vehicle control and smoothing out the ride on rougher terrain. The 570 S’ wider stance, increased wheel travel and lengthened wheelbase make night and day handling improvements over the 50” base model. The one upgrade the 570 S didn’t get from the 800 S is the compression adjustable, re-buildable reservoir shocks. The 570 S comes with ZF Sachs Twin Tube shocks that are pre-load adjustable and appear to be
pre y basic, but actually work pre y well. On our first few ou ngs, the suspension performance was actually pre y good, but we know from experience that a non-reservoir shock will only put up with so much abuse before the oil gets red and damping performance begins to decline. When we tested more aggressively on a rough, whooped out track we also found ourselves looking for a li le more compression. With the Sachs, you can add preload to the spring, just not anything to the valving. Polaris’ thinking is that not every user will benefit from the advantages of the higher dollar shocks. They leave this upgrade to the end user, as there is a wide variety of custom shocks available in the a ermarket. This decision surely helps to keep the cost down, but it is s ll nearly 16K Cdn. The whole idea behind the 570 S is not just based on price point, as there are a lot of people out there who don’t really need or want a 100 HP UTV. The ProStar 570 motor has been op mized for the 570 S applicaon. Pu ng out 45 HP, it’s not overly crazy impressive, even for its mid-bore size, but it works! Power delivery is smooth from bo om to top, it’s super responsive, and it will quickly get you to a fairly impressive 57 mph top speed.

The Ride
Our 12 year old test rider Sebasধan, fit right into the intended market for the RZR 570 S. He loves to hammer the trails, desert, or track on his ATV, but probably not responsible enough or really ready for a 70 mph, 100 HP UTV. An added bonus to the 570 S is that many race organizaধons won’t let a 12-15 year old race a UTV bigger than 700 cc, and the cost of building out a std. 570 was a liħle out of our budget this year. While the 570 S does fit the (teenager) youth market preħy well, it’s going to be appreciated by users of all ages, genders, and skill levels.
I got a liħle bit of seat ধme in a 570 S at Polaris’ mulধ-unit press launch in Montana. There were only a few 570 S machines there, a ton of editors, and a handful of other cool machines to test. Needless to say, my test ধme was limited and I was as excited as Sebasধan to get a loaner, as they were hiষng the showroom floors. We picked one up at our local dealership, and I can only imagine how long the next school day must have felt while waiধng to give it a shakedown. We took to our local ride area/test area for Sebasধan’s first UTV ride. He loves

atvworld riding his ATV, but with Mom and Dad in a UTV, he had been finding himself “confined” to the back seat on some of the longer, faster rides. The 570 S is his chance at his own ride on our UTV ou ngs and he can finally bring a friend as well. For the first day, we opted out on the co-driver, le ng him concentrate on the new controls and learning the machine. One slow cruise around the whooped out, sandy test track, and he was already in his comfort zone and picking up the pace. We let him moto it a few laps around the track before taking a trail ride and some photos. When he finally came in for a water break, I asked him what he thought of the new machine. It was obvious from watching him drive, but also the first words out of his mouth were about how much more stable it was in the turns. His only steering wheel experience is in an ACE, and the 570 S is night and day more stable than an ACE. Sebas an also said he really liked it over the jumps, berms and through the smaller whoops, but that his quad was smoother through the deep stuff. A er explaining that he is compensa ng with his body on an ATV and strapped into the RZR, he seemed to understand what I meant. In return, I watched him charge through a couple of different whoop sec ons. As it turns out, the RZR comes with the shocks all the way so , and he was bo oming it in the deep stuff. While the S shocks are not compression adjustable, they do allow for a wide range of preload, and it helped this situaon tremendously. I grabbed a helmet and took a couple of laps my-

self and felt it was be er than I expected. Being used to an XP 1000 on this track, you can’t expect a shorter car with smaller res, half the HP, and 50% less suspension travel to perform as well on sand whoops. That said, it was s ll comfortable, predictable and stable. For the next test, I switched to the passenger seat for Sebas an’s first UTV trail ride behind the wheel. The stability and handling is more than confidence inspiring, and a passenger might even think that 57 mph is plenty fast when being driven offroad by a teenager! All kidding aside, he did great! We started on some fast dirt roads and then took to the higher eleva on trails that get a li le narrower and a lot steeper.

The trail brought us to a few different situa ons with off camber ruts/ creeks to traverse, and I thought they might scare him, but he slowed a bit and charged through like a pro. I asked him if he was scared, and he said that visibility of the res was good, and he didn’t feel at all like it would roll. Reasonably steep hill climbs had the same effect with him; he didn’t really seem to secondguess them, he just charged up and we talked about it a erwards on the top. Overall comfort was pre y good, my overly spoiled rear end felt it could use the upgraded seats from the XP, but Sebas an had no complaints on seat comfort. The seatbelts are also pre y well placed. We tried drivers at 5’3”, 5’9”, and 6’, and none of them felt uncomfortable,

choked, or chafed. At 5’9” Sebas an is hardly pint-sized, but he did complain about the side bar crowding his shoulder and side a li le. I felt the same issue while driving, but mom with her smaller
frame had no such issues. We are looking into a ermarket aluminum doors to test, that replace that bar and offer a li le more elbowroom.

SCORE OF THE MONTH
Traxion Gripper Max
THE SCORE
With the spring riding season upon us, we were stoked to bust open an oversized box from Traxion Off-Road, and find a fresh set of mounted and ready to roll Gripper Max res. As most of you know, spring riding condi ons can span a broad spectrum, from dried hard pack, rocky crawls, loamy soil, and of course, lots of mud. To ba le these condi ons, we were looking for a re that delivered great all-around performance with few compromises. According to the crew at Traxion, their new in-house developed Gripper Max fits the bill perfectly.
Who is Traxion Off-Road?
We always love a good start-up success story, and the growth of Traxion is one such story. The company’s founder, Phil Clermont is an avid off-road enthusiast, and as he looked for affordable replacement res for himself and his friends, the ini al stages of Traxion Off-Road took root. The young entrepreneur started out by a aining a selec on of the best
and most affordable res from various re manufactures. Not long a er, his small upstart company began to grow. Needing more hands on deck, he recruited the help of Marc-André Quessy and Traxion Off-Road was officially formed. The new company looked to bring quality res and products to the Canadian off-road market, and as demand con nued to grow, the duo decided to design their own res. Enter the Gripper Max radial re.
Gripper Max Details
The Gripper is the first in-house designed re by Traxion, and the radial re features quali es and performance characteris cs that off-road riders are both familiar with and desire. The tread pa ern looks similar to other designs on the market, and this was done inten onally to give customers a performance level that is both familiar and confidence inspiring. The radial re is said to deliver the op mum combina on of a smooth ride, enviable trac on in many condi ons, and rugged durability. The 8-ply design and reinforced sidewalls ensures ruggedness, while the non-direc onal tread design delivers great grip and precise control. The re is available in a wide range of sizes star ng at 25x8-12 up to a 29x11-14. Tire weight ranges from 21lbs to 35lbs, and is obviously dependent upon re size.
We’re Rolling
Our “Score” Gripper Max res came pre-mounted and balanced on Traxion’s own X-1 rim with a machined finish. We will be moun ng this sexy combo on our ATV World project build Polaris RZR 900 S. Once we finish the build and log some miles on our favorite trails and riding des na ons across North America, we’ll provide you with a full ride report on Canada’s newest source for performance res.

HMF Exhaust Systems The Sweet Sound of Performance Year founded: 1997 Founder: Hans Luenger Performance exhaust maker HMF wasn’t always a household name amongst powersports enthusiasts. Like many successful companies, they started small and built the company the oldfashioned way…through hard work and perseverance. Founded in 1997 by Hans Luenger in Cleveland, Ohio, Hans built private label exhaust systems for Ducati Motorcycles. He soon hired three close friends, moved the business out of his garage, and branched out, offering performance exhaust systems for other street bikes and the Honda 400EX ATV. During this same time, Hans wanted to better understand the market he was supplying exhaust systems for, and in the process, build a reputation of performance and quality for his start-up company. To do so, he started racing motorcycles in 1999. To keep the company solvent and

grow, Hans refinanced his house three times, sold his beloved Corvette, and proceeded full-throttle into the rapidly growing ATV market. To prove the mettle of his exhaust systems in the off-road racing world, Hans once again turned to racing, and along with Pro GNCC ATV racer John Gallagher, demonstrated to thousands of avid racers and riders that HMF didn’t just deliver on the promise of quality and performance, but perhaps more importantly, the owner of the company was “one of them”. Today, HMF is regarded as one of the premiere aftermarket exhaust manufactures for both on and off-road recreational vehicles. To get more insight into HMF’s success and current product offerings, we hooked up with HMF Marketing Director, Lance Drew for this issue’s 411.

The Waiting is the Hardest Part
F
inally, it’s here…the warm weather, off-road riding season has returned. Unless you’re lucky enough to live in the southern United States where romping in the dirt is a year-round activity, the seasonality of our sport results in a pent-up desire to get out and ride as soon as the first hints of spring arrive. With the steady drip of melting snow, ringing from the shop eaves, and the sun delivering increasing warmth with each passing day, my anticipation for the first ride of the year is like a 5-yearold waiting for Christmas. Spring is an intoxicating time of the year, especially for ATV and UTV riders. The landscape transforms from frozen and monotone, to one bursting with activity and color. And you often have the perfect trifecta of riding conditions… no dust, no bugs, and no sweltering heat. The smells, sounds, and most importantly, the warmth of spring all come together to make that first dirty blast of the season one of the most coveted. Behind the scenes, the anticipation for the new riding season has many clubs

and trail associations already working overtime, getting their favorite stretches of trail ready for the season. From working with land owners and local governments, obtaining easements, clearing deadfall, minimizing erosion, and signage, creating and maintaining trails is labor of love that often happens with little to no recognition. Like many of you, I can hardly contain my desire to get out and ride after hibernating my off-road passion during the winter months. Of course, there are several parts of the country where winter time riding is vibrant and growing, but in my opinion, it doesn’t compare to the “real thing” on the dirt. So, what are we waiting for? It’s time to get out and ride…right? Nope…not yet. One of the biggest challenges clubs and trail associations face when it comes to building and maintaining off-road trails is that our tracks don’t disappear, especially during spring riding conditions. While many will point enviously to the vast network of trails of our winter snowmobiling counterparts as a future trail goal, this user group also enjoys the benefit of a vehicle that
travels over frozen swamps, ponds, and lakes. More importantly, when the riding season is over, the tracks they left behind disappear with the spring thaw. While it’s hard not to appreciate the enthusiasm of ATV and UTV riders to get out and hit the trails and ditches after a long winter’s slumber, I’ve seen too many trails destroyed, or worse yet, closed permanently from disrespecting riders. This spring, curb your enthusiasm and wait a few weeks for conditions to improve. In addition, consider selecting ride destinations where you know conditions are more favorable, (read drier) for minimal impact. If mud is your thing, be sure to find a location where this type of riding is allowed. Many trail systems have areas designated or mud pits designed for those of you who are addicted to getting dirty. The image we all portray, from where we ride, to how we ride, to the tracks we leave (or don’t leave) behind, plays a vital role in keeping our existing trails and opening new ones. This spring, ride smart. Doing so will show you are true enthusiast.
