hat a great spring for riding! I’ve been out on a lot of rides with our sponsored charities, local clubs, and our group from the office, and even on family rides. All of them have had a common theme, extra water and deeper mud. This spring has had more rain than I can remember in many years. The lakes and ponds have yet to drop down to normal levels, and it doesn’t look like that’s in the cards anytime soon. Usually at this time of the season, we arrive back a lot dustier from the trail, and the mud is only in your dreams. In my corner of the ATV World it’s been everything but dry. I haven’t been able to ride in a good dust cloud since last year. The rain has been so consistent that instead of packing a spare/“new” dust mask for someone who might have forgotten theirs, I’ve had the urge to pack a life jacket and water wings for some of the usual ones that swamp out in the holes. Every group has these guys, and if you don’t know who they are, it’s probably you Sherlock. It turned into a spring Christmas when one of our Sales and Marketing guys

knocked on my office door, sporting a Klim R1 Air Fresh Air Helmet with a Parker Pumper fresh air helmet blower motor. That’s a mouthful, but it’s a better tasting mouthful than the dusty trial. With a quick and straightforward install, we’ll be tampering with next level riding in the RZR soon enough. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I couldn’t be more excited to ride in the dust plumes! Needless to say, we installed it, but there hasn’t been any plumes yet. My usual goggle, helmet and RXZ mask setup has sufficed. Look for the install and write up of this combo in a future, Shop Hustle issue. I’m sure that when the warmer, dry season arrives, we’ll be missing the rain we’ve all been complaining about. When the weather turns, I’ll be the first guy out crushing the dust plumes with the Klim R1 helmet and the Parker Pumper system. I predict it’ll be a game changer come mid-summer. And as some of my fellow colleagues would say, “It’s a “paradigm shift” in the dust. Until next time, we’ll be out on the trails having fun with the extra water and mud!
The Klim R1 Helmet will connected to a Parker Pumper fresh air blower motor will make dusty days better.

Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle pilots sit 1-2 in the PRO Mod UTV class rankings. Can-Am factory-backed Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle racers Tim Farr and Kyle Chaney finished 1-2 at round two of The Off-Road Championship (TORC) Chicagoland Slam short-course off-road race this past weekend in Chicago, Ill. Farr continues to impress behind the wheel of his No. 804 Can-Am / JB Racing Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle. Farr, who finished third at the first round on Saturday, notched his second podium of the weekend with a victory on Sunday, May 14 on the modified ½-mile dirt oval course at Route 66 Raceway outside of Chicago. Farr completed 14 laps in a time of 13:15.683, to win round two by less than two seconds over Chaney and 17 other UTV racers. Farr ‘s blistering last-lap time of 26.508, the fastest of the weekend, helped propel him to victory. It also gave him the TORC PRO Mod UTV class points lead heading into rounds three and four. Chaney, a two-time Grand National Cross Country series UTV Pro champion, had a great weekend at the 2017 TORC shortcourse series opener as well, recording two runner-up finishes in his No. 891 Can-Am / Chaney Racing Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle. He currently trails Farr by one point in the class standings. Rounds three and four of TORC, the Twin Cities Takedown, are June 10-11, at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minn.

State¬-of-¬the-¬art 940V technology enables charging for up to four vehicles System can deliver up to 150kW across four simultaneous connections Future-proofed for next generations of electric vehicle development Public charging station will be used by Honda for internal research Integrated hydrogen generation and refueling station also planned
vehicles has been opened by Honda at its R&D facility in Offenbach, Germany. The station uses state-of-the-art 940V technology, enabling up to four vehicles to charge simultaneously with different types of connectors. The public charging station is powered by renewable energy sources, including a photovoltaic carport canopy. Its 940V capability can deliver up to a maximum of 150kW of energy across four simultaneous connections. The charging station will be operated by Honda R&D Europe and is ‘future-proofed’ for the next generations of electric vehicle technology. While the station can be used by current models of plug-in cars, vans, bicycles or scooters, its maximum highvoltage capability is designed to cope with the demands of future vehicles that have not yet been conceived. Honda R&D Europe’s investment in the charging station is part of the ‘Smart Company’ research project within the city of Offenbach, which aims to develop more intelligent and efficient ways of using energy resources. The 940V capability will enable new possibilities for Honda’s internal research into electromobility, in
line with its recently-announced ‘Electric Vision’ strategy. In a later phase of the research project, Honda R&D Europe intends to install a new hydrogen filling station with integrated hydrogen generation at the Offenbach site. Like the 940V plug-in charging station, it can be supplied exclusively with power from renewable energy sources. It will also have intelligent back-to-grid energy storage and transmission capability for the local power networks. The 940V public charging station was officially opened on 29 May 2017, at a ceremony presided over by Bernard Massberg, Head of Mobility for the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Regional Development, and the Mayor of Offenbach, Horst Schneider. This activity forms part of Honda’s commitment to an electric future in Europe, with a specific aim to have electrified powertrains in two thirds of European cars sold by 2025. Development of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell cars will place Europe at the forefront of Honda’s global electric vehicle strategy.

04 VEHICLES GBC MOTORSPORTS RACERS MAKE HISTORY AT X-FACTOR GNCC Heavy rains made for extremely muddy conditions, but that did not slow down GBC Motorsports racers at the inaugural X-Factor GNCC in Peru, IN. GBC racers set the course ablaze and secured numerous class victories, while one longtime GBC racer would end the day with a new career achievement, 23 years in the making. Following the early morning youth race, the 10am riders lined up and prepared for what was to be an extremely challenging day on the course. GBC Motorsports rider Doug Robey has been solid in 4x4 A competition this season, but took things to a new level at the X-Factor by finishing a season-best 4th place in the morning overall. Meanwhile, Ken Robey returned to winning ways with his fifth 4x4 Senior class victory of the year, earning a season-best 16th place in the morning overall along the way. After a slight weather delay, the afternoon class riders would line up to take their turn on the slick and muddy course. GBC Motorsports’ Landon Wolfe used the superior grip on his Ground Buster III tires

to take the holeshot award before falling into the middle of the pack during the first lap. Meanwhile, Johnny Gallagher was pushed through the fence and forced to the back of the pack with a lot of ground to make up. By the halfway point, though, Gallagher had fought his way back and was battling with the race leader. On the final lap, Gallagher spotted an opportunity to make the pass and seized it, taking the lead and going on to cross the line as the checkered flag few. “Honestly, it’s still sinking in right now, I just pushed hard and had myself in good position all day,” Johnny recalled after the win. “With a few miles to go, I took my shot at the lead and
made it stick. My big 22” XC-Masters were hooking up like crazy in places where everyone else was struggling, that was really the key to this win today.” This was Gallagher’s first career overall GNCC victory in 23 years of racing. Landon Wolfe would go on to finish 5th, while Marty Christofferson and Tucker Wyatt finished 7th and 8th, respectively. Matt Lindle earned his season best overall of 7th place after finishing 2nd in the XC2 Pro-Am class.

Can-Am Renegade X xc ATV racer Kevin Cunningham, the defending 4x4 Pro class champion, won the 4x4 Pro class and 10 a.m. session overall this past weekend at a mud-soaked X Factor Grand National Cross Country event held in Peru, Ind. Cunningham used the horsepower and 4x4 capabilities of his Can-Am Renegade ATV to his advantage in the mud, winning by more than a minute. With his five wins and six podium finishes in six GNCC rounds this year, Cunningham owns a sizable 38-point lead heading into round seven of the GNCC ATV series. Bryan Buckhannon finished second on his Can-Am Outlander 4x4 behind Cunningham, giving Can-Am a 1-2 finish at the X Factor race. In fact, it’s the fourth time this year that Can-Am 4x4 racers have garnered the top two finishing spots in the 4x4 Pro class this season. B BRIMSTONE WHITE KNUCKLE EVENT Brimstone Recreation’s “Hold On Tight” event of the year brings thousands of off-road enthusiasts out to enjoy the Cumberland Mountains with trail riding, competitive events, and the latest country music. For those of you who haven’t been to Brimstone yet, it is an amazing ATV Park in Huntsville, TN, that includes over 19,196 acres and 300+ miles of amazing OHV trails. Brimstone Recreation is in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, with additional opportunities for hunting, fishing, and kayaking etc., etc. The WHITE KNUCKLE EVENT is Brimstone’s Annual Spring Event, taking place every Memorial Day Weekend for the last 11 years. For 2017, ATV World Magazine was there to take it all in, and there was plenty to see and do. For the main stage concerts, Brimstone had arranged for Lee Brice and Michael Ray to cap off Saturday Night. Competitions would include an insane obstacle course, drag racing, and the infamous Wild Mountain Rampage, with all sorts of prizes including a brand new Yamaha Wolverine to one lucky winner. Competitions and concerts were just the tip of the iceberg at this year’s WKE, as downright FUN was clearly the biggest selling point. There was a super fun Karaoke Party with more giveaways, a one of a kind Moonshine Run, and a Vendor Village with the latest gear, products, and a bunch of amazing food trucks. They also threw in a bonus “Getting Back to the Basics” live acoustic concert at the Half-Cabin Event area. Check It Out!

Every aspect was well organized and thought out, right down to the ipad kiosks to help streamline sign up and registration.
Yamaha was on hand for public demo rides all weekend long. The rides were the real deal, on truly technical Brimstone trails with great guides. We were lucky enough to score a fresh new Wolverine R-Spec out of them for the entire weekend!
After a great day on sloppy wet trails, this was the best five bucks you could ever spend if you were tent camping for the weekend.
The stock Wolverine R-Spec could get you anywhere you wanted comfortably, in this beautiful off-road park.
While maybe a little more HP than you really needed on these tighter trails, the YXZ 1000R could still leave a huge smile on your face.
Zac’s borrowed Polaris Ranger 1000 was just a little handicapped in the ground clearance department.
Like a snake in the grass, Mako fit right in, as the entire WKE event is both family and pet friendly.

WKE had a full-on professional drag race competition for anyone with something to prove. We saw everything from sport quads to mudders, to our new buddy Wild Bill, on a two-seat Sportsman 850, giving it everything they had.
This mud hole was a definite crowd pleaser during the obstacle course competition.
We might have found the bottom of the Wolverine’s stock suspension right here, but it made up for minimal travel with its nimble handling traits.
Utility Drag Race and Obstacle course Champion Billy Burton said the shorts and boots must be some kinda Left Coast thing, but he wouldn’t hold it against me.

BLACK WIDOW SPIDER
The black widow spider is most recognizable for its colored, hourglass-shaped mark on their abdomens. This spider is feared in the temperate regions for its venomous bites, 15 times stronger than rattlesnake’s. If bitten, humans will experience muscle aches, nausea, and a paralysis of the diaphragm that can make breathing difficult. Bites can be so fatal to small children and the elderly. Thankfully, fatalities are not common because of the spider’s nonaggressive nature, as they tend to only bite in self-defence.

NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION saying appears way back in history, and was
THIS spoken by the ancient Greek philosopher
Plato. Now, you might be wondering where I am going with this, but the inven on I am talking about is something I am sure has touched every Canadian’s life at one me or another. The product I am referring to is something that, if you are a motorized or non-motorized recrea onalist, you should always have in your toolkit, is a favourite of Red Green, and that inven on is none other than “Duct Tape”. Since its inven on over 70 years ago, the s cky adhesive with the strong fabric backing has become a mainstay in many toolkits, emergency kits, and is known for its ability to fix anything from mechanical failures to stabilizing broken bones. You really should never leave home without it. The reason why it was invented may surprise you. It was originally thought that Duct Tape was invented by Johnson & Johnson for the military during WWII. The military needed a waterproof tape that could be used to keep moisture out of ammuni on cases. This original version of Duct Tape only came in Army green, and not the silver we associate with it today. Due to the fact it was green and shed water like a duck may be one of the reasons the soldiers began referring to it as “duck” tape. It wasn’t un l a er the war and it was used in the housing construc on market that the colour was changed to silver, when it was used for air ven ng duct work.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 2
While doing my research, I came across some added info to this Johnson & Johnson inven on. The previous points are true enough, but the origins of Duct Tape may very well be traced to a mother of two sons, serving in the Navy while she was working as part of the war effort. The following paragraphs are excerpts from the web, and contain part of the original leħer sent by Vesta Stoudt to President Roosevelt. Vesta Stoudt …went to work at the Green River Ordnance Plant in Dixon, IL., and because her sons were fighting for their country she wanted to help them. She was assigned to inspect and wrap cartridges used to fire rifle grenades. The cartridges were packed in small boxes which were waxed and taped to protect them against moisture. The tape, made of this paper, included a paper tab which a soldier could jerk to open the box quickly. It was a simple process; about the last thing that anyone might have thought could be improved or changed. But Mrs. Vesta Stoudt, the mother with two Navy sons, was different; she had an alert eye and an imaginative mind. She noted that the paper tab was weak and it easily tore away from the tape strip which was supposed to come off with it. This would compel a soldier to dig to open a box of cartridges. Seconds are precious when an enemy is lurking. How much better it would be if the tab were made of strong cloth, Mrs. Stout thought. When Mrs. Stout related her idea to her superiors they said, “Oh, forget it. Don’t be silly. The government knows what it’s doing. You can’t do anything about the government.” “Well, the government can make mistakes as well as anyone else,” Mrs. Stoudt snapped back. Where upon Mrs. Stoudt wrote to President Roosevelt. After explaining her suggestion, she said to the President: “Now
On October 24th, 1943, Vesta Stoudt was recognised and received an award by the Chicago Tribune for her contribution to the war effort.

atvworld
your son, my son, and our neighbor’s son must pull this tape off some way. Perhaps with his teeth or his knife, if he is lucky enough to have one - nine chances out of ten he hasn’t any. The enemy has time to kill hundreds of our men, while they have been trying to open the box to get the cartridges. “We can’t let them down by giving them a box of cartridges that takes a minute or two to open, enabling the enemy to take lives that might be saved, had the box been taped with strong tape that can be opened in a split second. Please, Mr. President, do something about this at once; not tomorrow or the next day, but now. We packed nearly 10,000 today on my shift and all wrong.” Mrs. Stoudt learned that the Army’s Ordnance Department works fast. In about two weeks she was informed by S. R. Stribling of the Office of Chief of Ordnance at Washington that her suggestion had been put into effect. “This office wishes to thank you for your excellent suggestion and will give careful consideration to any future suggestions you may offer,” Stribling wrote her. He also stated that “It is cooperation of this type the will win the war.” Wow. The amazing role (no pun intended) Duct Tape has played in the twenধeth century does not end there. In 1970, it was instrumental in geষng all three astronauts of Apollo 13 back to Earth safely. In 1972, it repaired the fender on one of the greatest SXS’s of all ধme, and that was the Apollo 17 Rover while it was on the moon. The list is truly impressive. So….The next ধme you go to use your roll of duct tape to repair your tent, riding gear or ATV, take a minute to think of Vesta Stoudt, a mother that would not take no for an answer, and had literally a lifesaving idea that has become an indispensable part of our modern life. She truly was a Mother of Invenধon.
Here, duct tape is being used to stabilize an injured arm between two wooden sticks in an emergency situation.
I wonder if Vesta Stoudt ever imagined that this product she invented to help her sons would continue to have such profound influence on our world. Here you can even find it to colour coordinate with your ATV.
As with many great products, it is manufactured by various companies and in regular and “super strong” options now. Make sure to buy quality when you purchase your Duct Tape!
Here, duct tape (as shown on the right rear fender) has been used to repair what has to be one of the greatest “Side by Sides” of all time - the Apollo 17 Rover while on the moon! ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 2

A simple dish soap solution in a spray bottle is still the easiest way to locate an air leak. Some air pressure. A little investigation, and a thirty cent tire plug, and you’re good as new!
A higher-pressure radiator cap will hold more pressure and higher temps without puking all your radiator coolant into the overflow tank or onto the ground. The stock cap is designed for average trail riders, so if you race or push your machine to higher levels, give it the cap pressure to match.

MAINTAINING THE DOORS ON THE POLARIS GENERAL THE
Polaris General is proving to be an all around great machine. The best of both worlds with tons of power, and great handling combined with real deal payload capabilities and a working dump bed. Another area of praise for the General is the comfortable cabin, nice seats, half doors, and our SE model even comes with a kick @$$ stereo. If you’re looking for one all around SxS to do it all, on and off the job, the General is hard to beat. The one issue we have had, and have witnessed with a few other 1st year General owners is with the doors. For us, it was love at first sight, they were stylish, quiet, and kept a lot of dirt, mud and water out in comparison to the typical RZR ¼ doors. After the honeymoon was over though, a few longer-term relationship issues have started to arise. The two main issues being a separation at the “clamshell” top of the door shell, and they started requiring a solid slam in to fully latch. Come to think of it, the separation issue is quite probably compounded by the slamming, but either way we’ve seen it an a handful of cars and want to show you how to fix it. We’ve even seen some that won’t latch shut at all, don’t be the guy with a tie down holding his door shut.
1 First let’s get the doors shutting smoothly, the latching issue is caused by one of three things, door alignment, a loose latch, or the internal latch release hanging up. Look at the way your door closes, if it is not square in the door frame you can adjust it at the hinges. The hinge bolts are hidden behind these removable access panels.
48
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 2
2 You can use a ratchet with a 13 mm socket to loosen the door hinge adjuster bolts. They are slotted and have a lot of adjustment. If it appears that the top is what needs the most adjustment, you can loosen the top bracket, and just crack the bottom bolt loose a hair. The same goes for the bottom if it appears to be the culprit.
3 If you have a helper have them force the door in the direction it needs to go while you tighten the bracket bolts. If you can’t wrangle someone into helping you(you probably don’t need a 2 seat SxS) jk, you can reach over whole door and lift or pull with it in your armpit to get the last bit of adjustment.
5 With your door square and latch aligned properly your door should operate smoothly. If not, you will need to inspect the latch. We found the two 10mm latch mounting bolts to be loose on the driver door. On our passenger door we found the door latch release to be hanging up inside the door, not allowing the latch to lock onto the striker. The latch bolts can be tightened through the access hole, but the release fix required opening up the door and tweaking the lever a little bit.
4 With the door square in its frame, check the alignment on the door latch to the striker plate. If the striker does not properly line up with the door latch you can adjust the plate’s positioning as the mounting holes are slotted. Take note of which direction it needs to move, loosen the two Torx bolts, adjust striker plate and retighten the Torx bolts.
6 Now for the separation issue, we’ve seen the duct tape method on more than one occasion but were really not a fan. One of the biggest problems being that the tape glue heats up and it opens up eventually anyways. The initial fix floating around the internet was to drill and zip tie the halves together but we think this can be a little more pro than that option.

how-to
7 Your hardware store will carry “connecting bolts” bolts and “connecting cap nuts” similar to these, if you have the option for black we would opt for that over antique bronze but living in a small town options are limited. These bolts are also called “sex bolts” in some stores. We used 1/4” by 20 mm and had to cut them off, but if you can by 15mm long ones go with that.
9 Stick the bolt through the hole and check the length. The bolt will bottom out in the cap nut so you need to size it up, and then count the number of threads that you will need to shorten the bolt for an accurate fit. We used a simple hacksaw and a vise to shorten 11 threads or about 5mm of our 20mm bolts but if you find 15’s you might not have to cut at all.
50
ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 2
8 You will need a drill bit that is sized like the bolt shank, and one that is sized to the slightly larger cap nut shoulder. Pick your desired spot where the bolt won’t interfere with inner workings of the door and drill from the inside to the outside with the smaller bit. Swap bits and re-drill the inner hole with the larger bit.
10 Once the bolt is sized correctly, use a little bit of blue loctite on the threads and then tighten the nut and bolt with two allen wrenches. Some may prefer to add a rubber washer on both sides to better seal and eliminate any vibration. For the General we recommend two bolts per door, and locating them similar to the photo’s but really this method can work on any two piece door that has separation issues.

BIG JUST GOT BIGGER The Maverick X3’s release was a huge deal with bigger wheelbase, more wheel-travel and bigger HP than the competition. We spent a couple of days in BAJA getting acquainted with it, and putting it through the paces on three hundred miles of actual Baja 500 race course. The machine was amazing and the trip a huge success, and the X3 truly proved itself as the UTV to beat in the “Super Sport UTV Class”. Polaris answered back almost immediately with the release of a turned up, 2nd gen XP Turbo RZR, with more a few more ponies than the X3, as well as a handful of worthy refinements. Two can play at that game, so now it must be CAN-AM’s turn! For 2018, BRP Off-Road engineers have once again brought you the most powerful, factory-built side-by-side vehicle on the market. The turbocharged 172HP 2018 Maverick X3 Turbo R model delivers 12% more horsepower and 10% added torque. This new flagship super-sport UTV can go from 0-60 mph in a mind-blowing 4.4 seconds, making it hands down, the fastest accelerating production side by side vehicle on the market. The 2018 X3’s additional power is the result of CAN-AM’s resolute engineering and devotion to performance. One key factor with the newest X3 is that they’ve re-designed the intercooler and fan for maximized heat transfer. 49% more heat flow is a huge factor for reliable turbo power, as is the new fuel pump that creates more fuel volume to support the substantial power increase. Possibly the best part about an extra 18HP on a Maverick X3 is that they won’t be charging you for it. The 12% HP increase for 2018 will hit the dealership floors at the same exact price point as the 2017 model.

CURBED BACK FOR THE MASSES While the new and improved MavericWhile the new and improved Maverick X3 kept the same retail for 2018, we believe there are probably still a lot of potential X3 customers that might not really need 172HP. Even so, there are probably a lot more customers looking for an easier to swallow price tag! CAN-AM has been busy building this X3 platform as well; the new 120HP Maverick X3 Turbo will come in at a reasonable $24,199 CAN. This represents a savings of $3200 off the
172HP base model, but still brings you many of the standard features that the Maverick X3 has been praised for. The market point-of-entry Maverick X3 Turbo still offers more HP than all of its competitively priced competition. The Maverick X3 is the lowest priced Turbocharged UTV on the market. The 120HP, budget conscious Maverick X3 will be available in both two and four seat configurations, with comparable cost savings.

THE DREAM DWT’s Wes Miller has been chasing the dream they call Baja for more than twenty years. Matter of fact, he got me started as well, suckering my brother and I into chasing the infamous Baja 2000 back in November of the year 2000. Wes was already five or six years into the addiction of trying to win it, and little did I know that I would be lured back every March, June, and November for the next 16 years as well. Back in those days, if you couldn’t ride a dirt bike, and you couldn’t afford a trophy truck, you might as well race quads, and that’s how it all started. (Lol)

Wes put together “Dream Teams” with the best of the best professional riders from around the country; were talking guys like Doug Gust, Jeremiah Jones, Tim Farr, Keith Little, and Harold Goodman just to name a few. The H Bomb Films Dream Teams led more miles than any other pro ATV team in the history of the sport, without ever getting that big W. something bad would always happen before the finish line. Wes eventually escaped the cloud by combining forces with Wayne Matlock’s American Honda and Matlock Racing backed team. He and Harold came as a package deal and they helped Wayne to win a handful of races and Championships. While the bad luck dissipated, Wes never really got the Overall win in his name that he’d been chasing for so many years.

JUST AS THEY THE START OF IT Just as we are all getting a little older, new UTV movement and class has WERE GETTING this started to explode. Just in the nick of to keep a guy his age from retiring, ALL THE BUGS time Wes dropped the ATV racing habit almost overnight, taking a year off to start putting a UTV effort. As most would ALL WORKED together learn, building a race UTV is a serious and building one that is SCORE OUT, POLARIS project, legal and worthy of a race like the Baja 500 or 1000 is even more difficult. The at the end of the tunnel is that with RELEASED light success there is a lot more opportunity THE TURBO BUILD MODEL WITH THE Rhys Millen Racing was completely new to Baja, but he loves a good chal50 EXTRA HP lenge and couldn’t think of a better place to test and develop. While ping like flies, with mechanicals and other issues, the guy hanging safely right behind Wayne’s dust was none other than Baja Virgin Rhys Millen. Wayne had a pretty solid lead for a long time, but succumbed to a broken suspension component, twenty-some miles from the finish line. Rhys was right there, ready to capitalize for the Overall win on his first attempt at Baja. Wes was one of those guys that dropped out of contention during that brutal Baja 1000, and seeing the Rhys Millen car slide into Ensenada for a win said a lot. Wes approached Rhys shortly thereafter and worked out a

The first race build was LSR built 2015 XP4 1000, the car worked great and they ran Vegas to Reno, the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000. They ran up front but battled cooling, CV axles, and clutching issues that kept them from winning. deal to build him and the Bomb Squad Race Team their dream car. It had to be ready for the Mint 400 and the Clock was ticking. RMR would build the chassis and assemble/prep the car, while Wes would be in charge of picking and supplying the other components. RMR fabricated the entire chromoly chassis to the same specs as his Baja 1000 winning car. The RMR chassis includes all the aluminum panels and very trick window net hatches. The RMR DWT Turbo RZR would also be using Madigan Suspension components including chromoly a arms, tie rods, trailing arms, radius rods, and front spindles. The Madigan Suspension is top notch stuff with HD tig welded, boxed construction and oversized high quality heims and uniball joints. This suspension would be coupled with FOX Racing Shocks, Summers Bros. Axles and UTV Inc sway bars. The latest, greatest FOX Shock Shocks are In the RAD (Racing Application DevelopD ment) program which is a constant constan work in progress, but they’re still the most m impressive performing shocks we’ve seen to date. On par with their t trophy truck shocks, they feature 3” seamless seam alloy bodies, dualspeed comprescom sion adjustment, adjus internal bypass by technology, technolog and dual rate springs. atvworld While these are built for the +4” Madigan Suspension setup, FOX does offer these same shocks for stock replacement. RMR built an ultra-trick carbon fiber dash to hold all the necessary gauges, radios and switches. They also built the massive carbon fiber intake scoop you see under the back of the roof, which force feeds reasonably clean air into the clutch system, keeping it cool, even under the most extreme racing conditions. Another ingenious addition that RMR added to the car was a super simple jack system that consists of a basic trailer tongue jack with a post welded to it, and then female receptacles welded in strategic lifting locations for trailside repair. The jack costs about 10% of what the “King Jack” race jack costs, works just as well, and doesn’t require an impact gun to operate it. Wes opted for heavy-duty UHMW skid plates from Factory UTV instead of the conventional aluminum ones. The UHMW will last an entire season or better, and also tends to slide over obstacles instead of sticking on them. Aluminum guards cover the lower front a arms with an included roost guard flap that protects the outer CV boots. Rolling stock was an evolving process as the year wore on. The car showed up at the Mint with DWT Sectors and MOJA-V tires. It wasn’t exactly what Wes

was looking for, but it wasn’t bad. At the San Felipe 250 they had changed it up to stronger Sector Baja wheels and a slightly skinnier??? 32 inch tire. By the Baja 500, BFG had just released the Baja TA KR2 in a 32x9.5-15. This was the magical tire and the size that Wes had been looking for. He filled them with Monster Seal tire sealant and coupled them with a super skinny, DWT Sector zero Baja HD wheel. They look very similar to the 1600 class buggy tires with good ground clearance, plenty of rollout, and minimal weight. The interior of the Bombsquad is all business. PRP Alpha seats provide the ultimate in containment and comfort while Schroth harnesses keep the occupants safe and secure. The team’s communications were handled by Rugged Radio, with an RRP 6100 intercom and an RM-60 mobile radio. The intercom allows the driver and co-driver to communicate freely, while the 60-watt radio ties in to allow communication with the chase trucks, weatherman, etc. Rugged Radios also provided a two person Air Pumper system to keep both driver and co-driver’s helmets fog-free and filled with cool fresh air. The Bombsquad team was also one of the first UTV teams to incorporate the new age sat phones with a PTT feature between the team’s trucks. The new sys-

The system is really cool, but unfortunately they picked it up the night before the race and had little time to work the bugs out, or really figure it out. Racecourse navigation has been GPS based for many years now; the Lowrance head units are the norm, and racers spend weeks pre-running and adding notes to the course layout. incredibly popular Lowrance GPS. LeadNav is an amazing GPS app that installs into an IPAD. The IPAD gets mounted securely in front of the co-driver and connects to the intercom. Lead-Nav also just released a new feature with worldwide “off-the-grid to off-the-grid” location tracking through integration with the Iridium satellite network. Basically, one party can track the other party, regardless of cell signal or Wi-Fi availability. This is big news for both race teams looking to keep in touch with where the car/bike etc. is, and also for the average trail guy who hasn’t made it back to camp yet and has everybody worried about him.

THE ONE AREA THE POLARIS XP TURBO REALLY LACKS IN IS EXTRA AVAILABLE WATTAGE FOR ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES. IN STOCK FORM IT MAKES ENOUGH POWER TO KEEP IT’S BATTERY CHARGED AND RUN A REASONABLY SIZED LIGHT BAR AND THAT’S ABOUT IT.
The race lights are all from LED stuff from Baja Designs. There are hundreds of companies selling LED lighting, but Baja Designs is one of the few companies that really invest the time into designing and laying out systems that really, truly work in a desert racing environment. These guys have been leading the Baja lighting scene for as long as we can remember, and they are also at the races, ready to help with set-up or any other issues that might arise. Baja Designs set up the Bombsquad car with two Squadron Racer Edition pod lights, an amber 10-inch Onyx
LED bar for the dust/fog, and a massive 40 inch led bar for the roof line. The one area the Polaris XP Turbo really lacks in is with extra available wattage for electrical accessories. In stock form, it makes enough power to keep its battery charged and run a reasonably sized light bar, and that’s about it. Electrical draw is a serious problem with racing, especially at night. A typical desert race-car adds in a race radio; intercom; GPS; extra radiator fans; clutch fans; fresh air pumper fans; rear race lights and front facing lights. This can be a huge problem as there is only so much available wattage, and nobody has been able to make a higher-powered stator for it. UTV Inc’s Johnny Angal ran into this same problem last year and developed a solution. UTV INC. built a custom billet aluminum set up that mounts an automotive alternator externally on the side of the XP Turbo motor. It’s not cheap, and it looks like a failure waiting to happen, but it ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 2

works and it works well. With the UTV Inc alternator, you can run whatever electrical accessories you want, with power to spare. The SCORE Turbo UTV class requires a stock motor, but you can turn it up externally. Wes used the new AEM Infinity ECU, and a custom Big Gun Exhaust for a more than reasonable performance boost. The intake uses a SB Filters particle separator to keep the big stuff out and a K&N Filter for final protection. Rhys Millen installed a massive CBR radiator for engine cooling, and DesertCraft’s new CVT Blaster clutch fan for additional clutch cooling. The key to keeping CVT belts alive is accurate clutch set up and proper airflow. Adam from Airdam Clutches gets their clutching perfect, and the CVT Blaster combined with the big RMR induction scoop keeps it plenty cool. They

lost 4 belts at the Mint 400 with basically stock clutching, and have yet to loose a belt since with this set up. They turned to CryoHeat for increased drivetrain reliability and durability. The differential, CV’s and complete transmission are disassembled and micro-polished and cryotreated. This adds durability as well as significantly lowering operating temps. The engine, tranny, and differentials are all filled with TORCO fluids for increased life expectancy and reliability as well. One final feature we noticed was the Safecraft Fire Suppression system and fire extinguishers. High quality fire extinguishers are mounted both in and out of the car, but there is also an automated fire suppression system that uses sensors to eliminate the threat of fire, should you become unconscious or trapped, due to an accident or rollover.

The throaty and responsive ProStar 900 engine and its electronic throttle control delivers quick response and crisp acceleration. Stepping out the rear comes easy, and despite the short wheelbase, control is surprisingly predictable. Once we grew accustomed to the vehicle’s habits, we rarely found ourselves oversteering while drifting corners. For the off-road journalists who were assembled for the debut of the ACE, the vehicle was definitely intriguing, but many felt it missed the mark. For starters, it was underpowered, at least for any rider with experience. Secondly, the industry was smack dab in the middle of a side-by-side explosion. The single occupant experience of ATVs was being replaced. For most, the side-by-side was more capable; provided a better social experience with your riding buddy sitting next to you; delivered a more familiar driving experience; and for many was simply more fun. Yet despite these winds of change, the ACE held its own, carving out a unique niche amongst first time riders, rental operators, and women to name just a few. Then, last year the inevitable arrived…a big bore ACE, and it got our attention. Powered by the ProStar 900 engine,

the “big” ACE produces 60-horsepower, and while not the 90-ponies some had been hoping for, it was a big step up from the original 32-horsepower version. Along the way, the ACE received other “step-up” features including Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Engine Braking System (EBS), improved paint, aluminum wheels, and a long list of custom fit accessories. It’s always hard to argue against more power – the bigger the better is the mantra for most enthusiasts. But given the popularity of the ACE amongst those with less experience, we wondered aloud if power could corrupt its confidence inspiring traits. The short answer is no. One of the best attributes of the ACE is how it combines the sit-down, secure feeling of a side-by-side with the nimble feel of an ATV. In tight and twisted trails, few vehicles can stay with an ACE, even an ATV,

The office space of the ACE 900 is spartan but effective, putting the key controls all within easy reach. A tilt adjustable steering column and slider bucket seat allows the ACE to fit most frames, albeit it tad on the tight side for those in excess of 6-feet.
A small rear cargo box comes standard on every ACE model and features Lock & Ride holes for expansion anchors, making for easy and quick attachment of many Polaris accessories. A center access door detaches with a firm tug, allowing you to check engine fluids. Payload capacity is a surprising 360-pounds (163.3kg).
Dual A-arm rear suspension features dual-rate coil springs, giving the ACE 900 a plush ride while still serving up cargo capabilities. Standard sway bars are found at both ends, while a 1.25-inch receiver hitch can tow up to 1,500-pounds (680kg).
Seating is borrowed from the RZR line and is comfortable but could use additional side bolstering on the bottom and back. With ample space between the seat and side door enclosures, you’ll find yourself shifting from side to side during spirited romps.

Flared fenders deliver sufficient driver protection from mud, water, and debris.
One of the biggest advantages of the power-up 900 is the ability to lighten the front while encountering obstacles. While you won’t be launching the tires skyward, the ability to “float” the tires not only improves ride quality, but is damn fun.

At just 48-inches wide, the ACE can navigate any trail used by an ATV legally while providing additional protection and security. We frankly love the powered-up version of the narrow stance ACE and we’re disappointed to learn it breached the magical 50-inch mark in 2017 save for the lower powered 570 version.

atvworld thanks in part to the low center of gravity the vehicle exhibits, thanks in large part to the low seating position. Add to this a short wheelbase and responsive power steering system, and riding on rails is not an outlandish description. Despite the added power bump, the ACE 900 SP remains as planted and confident as ever, only now you can “stepout” the rear, “back-it-in” the corners, and lighten the front with far greater ease. Mat the pedal, and the buggy will nearly hit the 70mph mark on the hard pack, a testament to the vehicle’s advantageous power-to-weight ratio. Playing a significant role in the stability and precision of the ACE 900 are new front and rear stabilizers and new dualrate springs at the rear. Those components are part of a suspension system that delivers 9-plus inches of travel at the rear, and more than 8-inchs up front. The stability of the just 48-inch wide and 61.5inch wheelbase is even more impressive
when you recognize the vehicle still delivers a full 10-inches of ground clearance, and the integrated rear cargo box, complete with Lock & Ride attachment points, is capable of carrying 360-pounds of payload. Of course, the ACE isn’t perfect, few things are. While nimble and quick to react on the trail, a wide turning radius forces three-point-turn maneuvers. The other notable nag is an overbearing level of noise, vibration, and harshness. A combination of close proximity to the engine/ drivetrain and an overly loud exhaust note creates a less than ideal experience from the cab, and it only gets worse when roof and windshield are added, further trapping the noise within. Geared primarily for play, the ACE can also perform light-duty utility work, thanks to a well thought out line of accessories including windshields, bumpers, storage boxes, winches, and even plow attachments. However, the low seating position
and tall fender sculpting hampers sightlines, and while the floor of the cab is relatively flat, the ingress and egress pales in comparison to a Ranger or traditional ATV. If Polaris had stopped with 2016 ACE 900 SP, we likely would have been satisfied. However, one year later, Polaris quickly eclipsed our 60-horsepower buggy with the all-new 2017 ACE 900 XC featuring 78-ponies, a wider 59-inch stance with a 6-inch longer wheelbase, and new dual A-arm front suspension with Walker Evans shocks on all four corners mated to GBC Dirt Commander tires. Yes, the new ACE borrows more from its side-byside siblings, and is a true single-seater performance buggy. Unfortunately, for those who want the go anywhere, nimble characteristics of a 48-inch stance, only the powered down version (the 45-horsepower ProStar 570) is offered, making the 2016 ACE 900 not only a one year anomaly, but a coveted keeper in our books.
IF POLARIS HAD STOPPED WITH THE 2016 ACE 900 SP, WE LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN SATISFIED.
The 2016 ACE 900 SP comes standard with partial doors for added protection. Must have accessories include a roof, half-windshield, and rear storage box.

THE GNCC ATV SERIES IS, AND HISTORICALLY HAS BEEN THE LARGEST, MOST CONTESTED ATV RACING FORMAT IN THE WORLD. The 13 race series typically runs ATVs and SxSs on Saturday and Motorcycles on Sunday. In recent years, they have had an unheard of 2400+ race entries at more than one event. What’s incredible is that in 33 years of ATCs and ATVs racing in the GNCC Series, there have been only 8 men to lay claim to an overall Championship Title.

he GNCC Series has seen a history of domina on in the ATV Class. A few guys were able to win it in the late 80’s and early 90’s with Ted Trey ge ng the first one in 84’, Tom Tokay winning the next three, and then Chuck Delullo and Bob Sloan trading off from 88’ through 92’. In 1993, Barry Hawk Jr. took over and kept it going for a record 7 years straight before le ng Bill Ballance take over the top spot. that he achieved in the 2003 season. With Barry focusing on two wheels, Bill Balance went on to win a record 9 straight championships before Chris Borich was able to take over the tle and run with it from 2009 through 2014. In 2014, Chris was the guy to beat, and a young Walker Fowler came incredibly close to doing it. A year long ba le came down to the last turn of the last race of the thirteen race Championship Series. Walker Fowler needed one more pass to secure his first Pro GNCC Championship, but he came up just a li le short. Walker

BACK TO THE BEGINNING DOMINATION FROM AN EARLY AGE Walker Fowler didn’t just jump into conten on for a GNCC Pro ATV Title. As a child, Walker was racing and winning youth GNCC races on a motorcycle, as well as racing quads at a local level. In 2004, his family pe oned the GNCC for a special trial Youth ATV race at the last round. The race was a success, and Walker won this first inaugural round and the Youth ATV Grand Na onal Championship was born. Walker Fowler next went on to win both the Youth ATV and Youth Bike overall Championships in 2005 and 2006. Walker Fowler Racing gained a support ride from
Randy Hawkins and AM-Pro Yamaha in ‘08 for both ATVs and Motorcycles. In 2009 Walker decided to drop the bike program to focus fully on ATV Racing. He won the College A Championship that year, and moved his way into the Pro Am ranks. In 2011, Walker Fowler swept all 13 GNCC Pro Am ATV races for a commanding Championship. In 2012, his first Pro Year, it took Walker 12 races before ge ng his first pro win at the Ironman. All this led up to that barely missed 2014 run at Chris Borich for the GNCC Pro ATV Championship.
WALKER'S TURN, BRING ON
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS Walker Fowler came into 2015 as determined as ever to earn his turn at the top. Walker spent the year ba ling with Chris Borich, Jerrod McClure, and Adam McGill, but was able to pull off his first ever Championship with 7 wins out of the 13 races. 2016 was another year full of
ght ba les, trading off a few wins with Adam McGill. Walker was able to wrap up the Championship early, and then Jerrod McClure got the last one of the year at the Ironman. Walker Fowler once again won the 2016 Championship with 7 wins on the 13 race series.
A IN 2012, HIS FIRST PRO YEAR, IT TOOK WALKER 12 RACES BEFORE GETTING HIS FIRST PRO WIN AT THE IRONMAN. ALL THIS LED UP TO THAT BARELY MISSED 2014 RUN AT CHRIS BORICH FOR THE GNCC PRO ATV CHAMPIONSHIP.

2017 Fowler Racing is on absolute fire in 2017. Factory Yamaha Racer Walker Fowler is winning races, and looking to keep with the age old ATV GNCC tradiধon of dominaধng and staying on top once you get there. Fowler has been puষng on a show in 2017, winning the first five GNCC races in a row. In 2017 Yamaha has also given Walker the opportunity to contend for the XC-1 UTV Class Championship in a YXZ 1000. The first UTV round was FL this year and Walker’s race ended liħle earlier than
expected. While trying to run that same, hard charging pace that he runs on his ATV, Walker clipped a preħy good sized tree and smoked the whole front end of his YXZ. Only finishing a single lap and a 59th place was not exactly what he was looking for. The second round in S.C. saw Walker with an impressive 8th place overall and 8th in class, he was running a liħle to the cauধous side ađer his first round DNF, but is definitely figuring it out. He has the speed and we expect to see him on the top of the UTV podium sooner than later.

ONE FOR JOHNNY-G Walker Fowler’s 2017 GNCC win streak was just finally stopped by none other than Yamaha teammate Johnny Gallagher Jr. Johnny G has been a staple in the GNCC Pro ATV ranks for longer than you could imagine. A stellar opponent and all around good guy, Johnny G has been right there, hovering around a liħle south of the podium for the past 23 years without an Overall Win. This says a lot for how tough that win really is to get, and also adds to the mysধque of only 8 guys winning Championships in a 33-year history of the Series. The X-Factor in Peru, IN was a mud bath, and truly quite perfect for a technical and almost over-experienced racer like Gallagher. Gallagher held about two seconds behind Fowler for the enধre muddy race, and then came on to baħle back and forth on the last lap. Johnny G dropped back a liħle to grab a fresh set of goggles, but was rewarded as Fowler got caught up a liħle with a lapper and he was able to sneak by on the inside line, holding on for the win. His first overall Win in 23 years of GNCC Pro ATV Racing. Johnny G earned that first win with an unusual (and smart) ধre set up. A longধme GBC Tire rider, Johnny had toyed with the idea of running a larger 22/23-inch ধre set-up in the Fla. sand last year. These ধres are heavier and raise

the center of gravity, but also provide addiধonal ground clearance and rollout. He balked in Fla., but sধll had the set of XC-Master ধres in the trailer for this season. When the rain surprised everyone with a sloppy mess, Johnny opted for the addiধonal clearance and tracধon of the larger ধre. Were not sure how much ধre choice really had to do with that first win, but it’s really cool to see it happen for a guy like Johnny G! Congrats!

“8 YEARS OF RIDING DIRTY FOR A GREAT CAUSE”.....TRAX4 BREAST CANCER Over 45 participants, both men and women hit the mud and trails at the 8th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV event. The annual weekend event, hosted by Grand Tappattoo Resort, Sequin was held this spring and was filled with lots of sun, mud and fun!! The excitement began on Friday afternoon with our Early Bird ride which offered participants a chance to ride the Sequin trail courtesy of the Park to Park Trail association. Participants we also offered a chance to participate in a smartphone scavenger hunt along the trails. All participants were given a list of “things” to take a picture of throughout the day on the Park to Park Trail. On Friday night the group enjoyed a Luau themed Meet & Greet, fun and games were enjoyed by all. On Saturday morning riders observed a moment of silence for those battling breast cancer and those who we have lost followed by the theme song MUD by the Road Hammers. The group then departed from the resort for our Annual Pink Ribbon ride on the exclusive private trail system
offered by Bear Claw Tours. Riders were challenged by every terrain thinkable from mud, to rocks to water ways, ensuring that a fun time was had by all. The sun was shining as the group stopped to enjoy lunch on the trail and a few turns through a water hole. We all returned to the resort late afternoon for a quick shower and to enjoy a fun evening complete with a plated dinner, speeches, awards, silent auction and lots of laughs. After 7 years of watching some really humorous situations on our annual ride, it was decided to create a “WTF Award” (sponsored by Max Rolph). This award was given to the most “dramatic mishap” of the day and while there were certainly several candidates who qualified with some pretty humorous results, the award went to Paul Van Diepen for attempting to change his side-by-side into a submarine in the well known water mud hole. We are super excited to announce that we raised over $65,000 at the event through participant pledges, corporate sponsorships, silent auction and raffle. For
the 6th year in a row, Mitch Kleinstein is the recipient of our highest pledges award! Special mention to 3 newbies who won the “deck your ride” contest; Selena Birbeck, Mike Birbeck and Margaret Armstrong. Congratulations also to Suzy Stenoff, who was presented a very special “in memory” award for compassion and love for others. A heartfelt thank-you to all our volunteers and friends who helped us; Andrew & Jonathon Ryeland, Kevin Grice and Erin McEwan from Bear Claw Tours for hosting and guiding us. Thank-you to all of our Sponsors that make it possible: ATV World Magazine, B Claw Tours, Coleman Canada, FXR Racing, Parts Canada, Park to Park Trail Association and Radioworld and all our Silent Auction donators. Our 9th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV Event will be held next spring, check out our website trax4bc.com For more information on the charity or to apply to the trust visit kellyshiresfoundation.org Together we ARE making a difference!
*TraX4 Breast Cancer is an ATV chapter that supports the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation which in the last 18 years has raised over $5 million dollars to offer financial assistance to those in need. The uniqueness about this Foundation is that it is a volunteer based organization that fills an important void in the community for both men and woman battling breast cancer across Canada. The average person does not realize the financial impact that a diagnosis and treatment has on a person, as not everything is covered by private or public health care systems. The expenses involved with undergoing a diagnosis and treatment can add up quickly, at a time when those diagnosed may have to stop working for the 6 months or more that they need to undergo treatment, leaving them with a reduced or no income to cover their day to day expenses. This is where the charity helps to fill the void. Through the application process, we are able to help relieve some of their financial stress giving them peace of mind financially and allowing them to focus on what is important... their recovery.

president of engine ice hi-performance coolant
When it comes to staying cool under the high-heat pressure of powersports racing, nothing does it better than Engine Ice High Performance Coolant. Developed by founder and president David Kimmey, the Propylene Glycol based coolant not only performs better than “traditional” coolant, it’s also safer for the environment. A long-time motocross racer and all-around powersports fanatic, David developed Engine Ice in a quest to come up with a better solution to keep engines cool and in turn deliver more stable horsepower, improved throttle response, and enhanced engine efficiency. Today, Engine Ice is recognized globally as the best choice in powersports coolant and used by many of the biggest names in motocross, kart, side-by-side, and ATV racing. We caught up with David to get his last words for this issue’s Last Turn and see what might be coming next from Engine Ice. To learn more about Engine Ice and where to purchase visit engineice.com Last ATV/UTV ride you took? It was about two months ago, we went riding with the crew from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC on some stunning private owned by KTM rider Blake Baggett. Last thing you questioned putting in your mouth? A very odd-looking mushroom at a sushi place. Last band you listened to on your iPod/radio? Electronic Dance Music from Calvin Harris Last thing you raced? A go-kart Last time you pulled an “all-nighter”? Ha…its’ been so long ago I can’t even remember. Last time you drove over 100mph? What day is it today? Speed is your friend. Last thing you saw or heard that made you think WTF? No question, the daily news. Last near-death experience? What day is it again? Ha ha.

Last time you were injured? It was late 2016, I somehow tore the meniscus in my right knee…I still don’t’ know how that happened. Last thing your mother always told you to do? Be safe! Last time you crashed? What vehicle? Seriously though it was a few months ago…it was the other guys fault I’m sure. Last time you were embarrassed? Getting an easy question wrong on jeopardy. Lasting off-road memory? More than anything I really enjoy driving to the races with my family. It’s a great time when all of us can be together and not distracted by other things. Last idea/concept/or new product that you experienced that made you say… hell yeah? I can’t tell you just yet, but we’re really excited about it. Last thing you read? I’m somewhat of an audio book junkie, so when it comes to reading it’s either the new or doing some sort of research for work.
Last person or animal you hugged? My dog, Brownie. Last time you threw up? It was a race at Thunder Valley in Colorado. I had altitude sickness I think. Last New Year’s resolution you didn’t keep? I don’t even bother with resolutions. Last time you were lost? Hey, wait a minute, I’m a guy and I’m never lost…I’m just using an alternate course. Last thing you would possibly eat that is lurking in your shop fridge? Fortunately, there’s no food in the shop fridge Last project you worked on that you were truly excited about? That’s the second time you’ve tried… you’re still going to have to wait until we’re ready to announce. Last time you laughed so hard you nearly wet your pants? Nearly?!? Last words of advice? Stop being a baby and just do it…and bring me my trophy.

DETONATION
BEYOND THE DESERT TORC tracks are longer in length than what many would consider a “short-track” course, often exceeding 1-mile. Terrain includes banked clay turns, massive sand whoops, rutted corners, and of huge step-up and fall-away jumps.
F
ew off-road races are more legendary or highly-regarded than Baja. Just the simple mention of the name conjures up images of high-speed sand runs and “bombing” unknown terrain across sparsely populated stretches of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. The race, which was first officially run in 1967, has become the ultimate test for off-road vehicles, and in recent years ATVs and side-bysides have played an integral role in its makeup. Beyond Baja, other “big-time” sideby-side desert races have cropped up, mirroring the explosive popularity of the vehicles themselves. Best in the Desert (BITD), Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, Ultra4 and their King of the Hammers event, and the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) each feature side-by-side classes, and many of the manufacturers and aftermarket companies have invested significantly in the sponsorship of these series. Judging by the sheer number of race organizations, events, and social media chatter surrounding these races, it would appear at first glance desert racing is where it’s at. Or is it? No question, many of the races are significant. But what many fail to realize is that beyond the arid bubble of the southwestern United States, desert racing could just as well take place on the moon. Yes, the images are amazing, and

to compete and win in any one these events is truly an accomplishment worth celebrating. But for those of us who live east of the Rocky Mountains (and there’s a lot of us), desert racing isn’t relatable. What’s more, at last check none of the race organizations mentioned above deliver any type of televised programing or live streaming to engage fans beyond the hardcore enthusiasts currently being reached. However, there’s movement afoot to break these desert chains. This past weekend I had the opportunity to take in my first ever TORC: The OffRoad Championship event. The series which is owned by Mountain Sports International and currently features races in the heart of the country near big cities as Chicago, Green Bay, Indianapolis, and Minneapolis, has
added UTV racing to their traditional closed-course off-road truck racing format. In less than a year the class has exploded in popularity. At the most recent TORC Series race, more than 50 UTV racers participated in the two pro-classes, with several more in the supporting Sportsman ranks. In addition, powersports companies such as Yamaha, Kenda, and Maxxis have thrown significant sponsorship dollars behind the series. But beyond the participation and sponsorship, MSI also touts a live production element within the company, meaning the races are both live streamed and rebroadcast for television. Add to this a closed-course format at fan-friendly venues, and you have a recipe for broad appeal and reach beyond the desert…and if that happens everyone wins.
Yamaha currently is the brand to beat in TORC with young gun CJ Greaves the top pilot in the PRO Mod UTV ranks.
