Desiree’s Ride Desiree’s ride began in 2014. Desiree was a victim of crime. She was brutally beaten and fell seven stories from a balcony. She survived for 2 years but was left blind and in a wheelchair. Desiree went from a vibrant 21 year old girl to a girl who was blind and physically disabled. The first annual ride in 2014 raised $10,000 to help Desiree with her extra medical and rehabilitation costs. The 2nd annual ride this year was in Memory of Desiree. She passed away in May 14, 2015 at the age of 23. The 2nd annual ride this year raised $8,000. We were able to donate $4000 to Victim Services and $4,000 to Participation House. Desiree was a victim of crime and physically disabled so what better cause to help. The ride was first named the Ridefordes but with Desiree passing we have decided to change the name to Desiree’s Ride. The ride was once for Desiree but now the ride is not for her but it is Desiree’s Ride. We want to continue the ride and make it grow, as well as keeping Desiree’s name as a legacy. Desiree touched so many people’s hearts. She helped so many people, whether it was a young girl going down the wrong path who heard about Desiree’s story, or another victim of abuse come forward and tell their story. She gave them strength and courage. Desiree was a fighter. She NEVER EVER gave up. Desiree continued helping other people right to the end. She was an organ donor, and she saved 5 other lives by choosing to donate her organs. We want to continue to support Victims of Crime

A monkey is the slang term for the passenger on a racing sidecar. Here is a firsthand account of what it is like to be a monkey. Finally, it’s time to get my leathers on. The driver and I do final checks before heading to the pits for pre-grid. It seems to take forever for the race ahead of us to finish so we can go out on the track. I begin to focus on the task ahead; visualizing the track and remaining calm. At last, we are going around the circuit for the warm up lap. Next we’re on the starting grid. I drape my body over the rear wheel so we can get the most traction. Will the light ever change from red to green? The motor is revving louder and louder and just like that we’re off, trying to be the first into corner one. My arms are straining from the acceleration. I twist my neck to look as far ahead as possible to prepare for what is coming up. There is a transition from a right hand corner into a left. I stay to the right for as long as possible so the driver can maintain maximum speed, but I can’t be too late or I’ll miss the “sweet spot”. The sweet spot occurs from the unloading and loading of the g-force and allows me to move almost effortlessly to the position I need to be in. My body is now out past the sidecar wheel for the left turn. The ride is rough as we go up and down the gears through the twisting track. My sight lines are poor but the track has been embedded in my memory and I anticipate my next move. Any mistake, regardless how small must be kicked out of my mind so I don’t lose focus. My body is now getting drained of all energy, but there is no giving up. The last lap flag is being waved and I’m telling myself, “This is going to be the perfect lap”. We cross the finish line and I am grinning from ear to ear. Exhausted, we do a cool down lap and head to our pit. I am drenched from head to toe with sweat. The driver and I congratulate each other and discuss what went well. The pits are full of our competitors and everyone is talking and reliving the thrilling experience. You can live the experience too. See the Sidecar Racers Association in Booth 4008

New Harley-Davidson Sportster Models Get Leaner and Meaner hen you are the most iconic cruiser motorcycle brand in the world, reinvenধng yourself and more specifically, a new model year of motorcycles, can be a daunধng task. To the untrained eye, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have changed liħle over the past 20-years. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, and the engineers and designers that spend long hours weaving new technology and performance into the latest Harley-Davidson models know this first hand.

Harley-Davidson Sportster Models There’s an intricate balance that takes place inside the walls of the research and development center in Milwaukee. Every bike that bears the iconic bar and shield must “fit” within the brand’s iden ty of classic American cruisers, and gain the final stamp of approval from Willie G Davidson, the grandson of one of the original founders of the company, William A. Davidson. While other motorcycle companies o en mes have a blank canvas to dream, design and create new models, HarleyDavidson is o en bound by the very success it has created. Yet, the company con nues to forge new paths and new models that keep one foot in the past while taking a giant leap forward through design and technology. For 2016, one such model that does just that is the new Forty-Eight, built upon the Sportster XL 1200 pla orm. First introduced in 2013, the Forty-Eight was in many ways a shrunken version of the Fat Boy, one of the company’s most successful and beloved models over the past two decades. For 2016, the Forty-Eight has been infused with new suspension technology in the form of high-performance cartridge type forks and adjustable rear shocks to match. From there, the new model has been further stripped and slammed, giving it an even greater minimalis c appearance that is nothing short of old-school, hot-rod bike cool. The most stunning feature of the new 2016 model is the burly front end and black 9-spoke, cast aluminum rims that compliment the blacked-out, rubber mounted 1200cc Evolu on engine with electronic fuel injec on. Joining the blacked-out theme is a new belt guard and black- pped exhaust that are set-off by chrome shields. The slammed a tude of the Forty-Eight starts with the oversized front and rear res and adjoining chopped front and rear fenders. From there, the drag style handlebars tout a low-mounted speedometer and under bar mounted mirrors a la café’ style. An all-new, minimalist style seat adds to the loud and low theme, which for 2016, is more comfortable than previous versions. The Forty-Eight also features new paint op ons for 2016 and retro-mod graphics on the side of the 2.1-gallon, peanutstyle tank. Joining the tradi onal vivid black hue are new vivid silver, velocity red, olive gold and a new, hard candy custom gold flake hue.

Slammed low with an equally slammed seat, the 2016 Forty-Eight model from Harley-Davidson features all-new front and rear suspension, serving up greater comfort and a more menacing look.

The Forty-Eight also features a new black ࣅpped exhaust system, accented with chrome shields in staggered formaࣅon.

Back to Basics with the Iron 883 Joining the Forty-Eight is a refreshed Iron 883, in what can best be described as a modern interpretaধon of the classic American Bobber. While the Iron has been a part of the Harley-Davidson Sportster line for some ধme, 2016 marks the first major upgrade to this pracধcal and stylish entry model since it first rumbled pavement in 2009. The crew in Milwaukee has outfiħed the new Iron with an improved suspension at both ends, to beħer aħack our much-maligned urban streets that are found across North America. New emulsion technology rear shocks now feature pre-load adjustability with a handy, under-seat rear adjustment wrench. To the front, cartridge style forks will keep the front ধre beħer planted as you charge down back alleys, while delivering much improved comfort. Adding more style to the Iron for 2016 are a host of blacked-out goodies including 9-spoke cast aluminum wheels,

New cartridge forks, adjustable rear shocks, and a tuck and roll Bobber style seat highlight the changes made to the 2016 Iron 883 model.

The new Custom Vehicle Opera ons (CVO) Street Glide is packed with custom style and features, and touts a new re pressure monitoring system; LED front turn signals; Boom Stage II audio system; new 5-spoke, contrast chrome aggressor wheels; and of course, high-end paint with hand-applied graphics such as this Atomic Red version with Candy Apple Flames. 24

All new for 2016, the Road Glide Ultra returns to the HarleyDavidson lineup offering riders the custom, twin headlamp style that only the Road Glide can deliver in a high-comfort version, built for two. The bike is a combina on of features from Project RUSHMORE and the CVO Road Glide in one amazing, big, mile-high comfort and high-style offering.

a floa ng brake rotor, stamped aircleaner cover, and complete mufflers and adjoining shields. To offset all that black, Harley-Davidson has given riders a choice of two new colors – olive gold and hard candy gold flake. Returning colors include black denim and charcoal denim, two unique takes on the classic and always in style black hue that riders crave. Built around the entry powered XL 883 architecture has not only been given more comfort via the suspension, but the Bobber style seat has been upgraded as well, with more padding and a sweet looking tuck and roll style that feels as good as it looks. Other features include drag-style handlebars, chopped front and rear fenders, and s ll more blacked-out components, giving the en re bike a low, lean and menacing appearance.

Both the Sođail Slim S and the Fat Boy S are dressed for minimalist style, and feature the beastly power of the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110B engine, dipped in gloss black.

Softail, Fatboy and Dyna Models Get More Power Of course, there’s more new to discover in the 2016 Harley-Davidson line, and it starts with more power. All Sođail models will now feature the High-Output Twin Cam 103B engine, with a newly designed air cleaner that features High-Output badges, so you can strut your addiধonal ponies, even when parked. Cruise control is also now standard fare on the Heritage Sođail Classic and Deluxe models, and is an easy to add dealer upgrade on other Sođail models. There’s also more power to be found on the 2016 Fat Boy S and Sođail Slim S models, as the bad boy Screamin’ Eagle 26

Twin Cam 110B motor is now nestled under the tank. These same models get a heaping helping of blacked-out goodies including a gloss black engine, handlebars, headlamp trim ring and fork lowers to name just a few. In keeping with the more is more theme, most 2016 Dyna models will receive the ধre burning power of the High-Output Twin Cam 103 engine.

Still More New for 2016 There’s sধll more to discover within the 2016 line for H-D, including upgrades to the Touring and Trike models and Harley-Davidson Street models. Plus, there is always something to see when

BIG BROTHER ATTITUDE IN AN 800CC PUNCH

M

inimalist styling has been a hot trend as of late in the motorcycle industry, and while the lean and ধght styling can be found in virtually every segment of the market, nowhere is it more prominent than in what has been dubbed the “streetfighter” category. With styling deeply rooted in the stripped down sportbikes built by riders who covet nothing more than raw performance and a few thrills, Kawasaki experienced enormous success with their compact and powerful Z1000, a bike that was small in stature, stunning with its angular, sharp edged design, and an absolute blast to ride, thanks to a boasĤul power-to-weight raধo. THE NEW FOR 2016, Z800 FROM KAWASAKI HAS A STANCE AND LOOK THAT APPEARS READY TO ATTACK THE PAVEMENT.

2016 KAWASAKI Z800 Now those same a ributes have been ins lled in the new for 2016, Z800, a li le brother to the Z1000, with mid-level power and a can-do a tude that makes it perfect for Sunday morning back road romps, or a simple trip to town. Powered by a torque happy 806cc four-cylinder engine, power comes on smooth, with plenty of wheel li ing torque, and then is met with a high-rpm surge that propels this compact bike easily into triple digits. One of the major power goals for Kawasaki engineers when designing the new Z800 was to ensure the bike was very “streetable”, meaning it had the power and torque where it’s needed most - in the low to mid-rpm range. To get there, Kawasaki used a two-stage thro le body design with what they call sub-throttles, to smooth the power deliver from low to mid. In addi on, large, curved header pipes were made as long as possible with equalizer tubes, which again creates added torque in the low to mid rpm range. Those long headers are then dumped into a “shorty” muffler that adds to the streetfigher persona, and keeps the mass centralized on the bike. All that power is then channeled to the pavement through a short-shi ing, six-speed transmission. The lower five gears are close in ra o, 30

giving the Z800 instant accelera on, and keeping the revs in the meat of the horsepower. The final gear however, is taller and allows the Z800 to stretch its legs on the open highway. There’s plenty more engineering trickery and sophis ca on going on with the Z800 beyond the engine. For example, the frame and chassis incorporate a cast aluminum engine sub-frame that allows the engine to be mounted as close to the center of gravity as possible for instant response when naviga ng ght traffic or

INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE • THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF SUPERSHOW 2016

a twisted canyon road. That same cas ng also helps to further smooth the muscular engine for a smooth ride with less vibraon in the handlebars. With the ‘go’ side of the equa on taken care of, Kawasaki then turned to slowing the Z800, and here you’ll find a four-pot front caliper and single pot rear, all ed to a standard an -lock braking system (ABS) that provides excellent feel and even greater confidence, especially on slippery road surfaces.

EDGINESS WRAPPED ENGINEERING Despite being packed with sophis cated technology, it’s the styling of the Z800 that truly makes it a showstopper. Following the styling cues of the Z1000, the li le brother 800 is thin, compact and features an angular, yet flowing line that looks badass just standing s ll. A low posi oned headlight cowl gives the bike a menacing appearance from the front. Walk around to the side and the Z800 appears to have the bulk of its mass centered around the engine, which in many ways it does. An ultra-thin tail sec on, with thin LED ligh ng and the stubby exhaust system, further promotes a mass forward stance that simply begs to be ridden hard. In keeping with the streetfighter mantra of the Z800, many aspects of the bike were kept minimal and void of over-thetop finishes. The blacked-out engine and buffed finishes give the bike a hot-rod shop appearance. Adding style and func on are fla er and wider handlebars,

which compliment other minimalis c styling traits of the bike. However, all is not simple…especially when it comes to the controls of the Z800, which feature modern day technology, hidden behind a compact and sleek design. The instrument panel features three LCD screens in an angular housing

that mirrors the lines of the bike, and their func onality can be customized to suit a rider’s preference. Features include tradional engine and bike measurements, plus an economical riding indicator, fuel range, and three tachometer display pa erns.

SEE THE Z IN PERSON

The all-new 2016 Kawasaki Z800 with ABS streetfighter will be on display at the North American Motorcycle Super Show at Toronto’s Interna onal Centre, January 8-10, 2016, along with much of the 2016 lineup from Kawasaki. Along with ge ng a personal look at the new models, you can talk directly to factory representa ves about the latest features, and any quesons you may have.

REEVU HELMET

BIKE SHOWCASE

The Motorcycle helmet has one job, and that is to protect you. The Reevu helmet took this concept one-step further and developed the world’s first motorbike helmets with an integrated rear vision system that helps prevent accidents. The patented design actually bends light around the shape of the helmet providing the rider a clear view of what’s behind them. By placing the rearview mirror right above the eyes, the Reevu works just like a car mirror offering awareness of what’s happening behind the rider with a simple glance. To see the helmet head over to Altman International booth in Hall 2 West.

The Bike ShowCase is an ultra-premium storage shelter that seals your bike away from dings, dust, dirt, corrosion, mildew, and pests, while presenting it in a show quality display. The Bike ShowCase provides ultimate touch less protection by utilizing the patented heavy duty and resilient inflatable air columns and also features a front panel, which zips open and away, allowing the bike to be easily rolled in or out. The Bike ShowCase even exchanges the air inside the capsule with filtered outside air 3-5 times every hour, keeping the temperature inside consistent with the temperature outside and eliminating moisture that could condense on the bike. To see the Bike ShowCase in action head over the CarCapsule booth in Hall 1 East.

Dalton Timmis Group Redefining Motorcycle Insurance Insurance no longer has to be a taboo word. No one likes to deal with insurance; however we are all required to have it. Dalton Timmis or DTG for short has taken the approach of making this easy for you. We have a professional sales staff and exceptional service advisors that are skilled and equipped with technology such as call recorded applications and change processes to make life easier for you. We are proud to be Canada’s largest power-sport provider. Show me the savings - You’ve asked and the markets are listening! The best rates come when you set your deductible at $1,000 on the collision, comprehensive or fire and theft. Also, bundling your home, auto with the motorcycle together will work in your favour. Various carriers offer additional discounts such as toys discounts, individualized rating for riders that have more recreational vehicles than others, accident waiver protection on your motorcycle, mature rider discount, advance rider training when an additional safety course has been completed within 3 years, as well as increased driving records for those that have completed the M1, M2 and Motorcycle rider training courses. There are more insurance markets opening up for the motorcycle world that creates further savings for riders today. Dalton Timmis represents Echelon, Aviva, Traders, Northbridge, Travelers, Economical, Pembridge, Gore Mutual, Guarantee of North America, Chubb, AIG, Royal & Sun Alliance, and Intact. What does this mean to you? More options, savings and advantages that will fit your needs. Changing the game - In today’s fast pasted life no one really has time to deal with paperwork, such as faxing important documents back and forth, mail in ownership copies or motorcycle training certificates. Dalton Timmis wants to help save the environment with you. Another industry change is when a rider has a ticket and they pay for this on their auto policy, why should they have to pay for it on their motorcycle? Now, with many carriers they don’t rate for the ticket on the auto and the motorcycle. Riders have also always asked about fleet insurance for their collection of bikes, this still does not exist however, when there is more than one motorcycle on the policy each bike receives a Multi-Bike discount. Just think when that rider with the collection of bikes has the complete bundle the premium on each bike goes down even further with all the other available discounts applied. DTG has worked to provide the insurance answers for the riders because we have been listening and working for you. How’s that for redefining! We’ve got Social Media Buzzing and we’re breaking the internet with the all new “Two Click Quote” Life can be hectic so yet again we have found a way to simplify the quote process. All our brokers need is 1 minute of your time and to scan of your driver license bar code to provide an estimate on your auto and motorcycle insurance needs. At Dalton Timmis we listen to the needs of our clients and take the guess work out of insurance by having knowledgeable and experienced brokers as well as all the major markets to ensure that we have the solution that works for the rider – Don’t wait call us today to find out for yourself 1-888-385-8466 or visit us online and get a quote www.daltontimmis.com

intense, action packed motocross racing I

t’s starting to sound like a broken record when we say “Next year is going to be the best ever!” In 2015, the level of competition in the MX1 class was incredible. Three former national champions (Facciotti, Metcalfe, Goerke) all lined up on the gate for each moto throughout the ten round series and put on a show that was never before witnessed. It came down to the last moto to determine the champion – Rockstar OTSFF Yamaha’s Matt Goerke. The same three superstars are returning for the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals but this time all three of them will have their hands full. The runner up in the 2014 series, Mike Alessi, has joined the Monster Energy Kawasaki team along with his American teammate Vince Friese. Friese raced only one round last year in the MX1 class in Calgary and took the overall win. Alessi is always a threat. Now there are five world class riders that will be battling for the championship. You pick the winner...we can’t. The MX2 class will be offering the same level of excitement. Royal Distributing KTM’s Kaven Benoit captured his second title in a row, and now has to move to the MX1 class, so now the MX2 crown is up for grabs. Canadians Jeremy Medaglia, Shawn Maffenbeier, Cole Thompson and Dylan Wright are our country’s best hope to walk away with the hardware but they’ll have their hands full with FXR Yamaha’s Jimmy Decotis, who recently won the Australian Supercross Championship in the MX2 class, and Amsoil Arenacross star Jacob Hayes. If you’re after a day full of intense, action packed motocross racing, we’ve got it. If you want to see some of the best riders in the world do battle and fight their way to the finish, we’ve got that too. It all wraps up at the last round at RJ Motosport in Barrie, August 14, 2015. And most likely, both class championships will come down to the last moto. Are you willing to miss it?
