THE IRON SIRENS – THE SISTERHOOD

THE HEAVEN’S SAINTS The Irons Sirens is a womenʼs only club that started in November of 2010 and has grown to a very large organization with Chapters across Ontario and Alberta. The Iron Sirens are working hard and well positioned to become the world's leading organization of women's motorcycle riding groups. Internally we have fostered a strong culture of sisterhood, which inspires women to pursue the interest of riding motorcycles and provides a network of support for women riders around the world. We have built strong relationships based on respect within the motorcycle community and we continue to nurture those relationships and bonds. Our chapterʼs host weekly ladies only group rides, and we also have monthly rides and other events for our members to participate in. Over the years, our club has seen many changes and it has become clear that what brought us together was riding but what held us together was the bonds and friendships that formed the “Sisterhood”. Come check us out at www.ironsirens.ca 6

The Heavenʼs Saints Motorcycle Ministry provides motorcyclists a brotherhood to fellowship and minister alongside that has grown into an International Ministry of men and women, with the majority of chapters in the U.S. and Canada, but also members worldwide, coming from a variety of backgrounds. We participate in organized rides and events throughout Canada and the United States in addition to our own locally organized events. Individual chapters are involved with ministry endeavors including prison ministry, restorative justice, street evangelism, and homeless outreach.

The Bold…The Beautiful… The Kawasaki H2 ONE BY PAT BOURGEOIS

look at the new 2015 Kawasaki Ninja H2 is all it takes for an overloaded rush to your senses to commence. The sleek lines are equal parts stunning and aerodynamically intelligent, and stir the visual nerve endings of your frontal lobe. But more importantly, itʼs the bold statement of power and speed that smacks you up along side the head like a ball peen hammer. With the simple, but often times difficult to achieve formula of raw power, incredible speed, and track inspired handling for the street as its benchmark, the new H2 does more than stand out from the pack, but instead, instantly carves out a place in the halls of historical motorcycle significance.

INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE • THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF SUPERSHOW 2015

13

Kawasaki has typically steered clear from single sided swingarm designs, instead opting for the strength and rigidity of a traditional design. The H2 ushers in Kawasaki’s first single-sided swingarm, employed to allow the exhaust silencer to be mounted as close the bike’s center point as possible and ensure high lean angles.

These are bold words, but the Kawasaki H2 is a bold motorcycle, designed to offer more in every measurable category by which a motorcycle can be measured. To get there, Kawasaki employed help from virtually every corner of Kawasakiʼs Heavy Industries (KHI) Group, from the Gas and Turbine Machinery Company to the Aerospace Company to the Corporate Technology Division. The result is a motorcycle bursting with technology, cutting edge style, and speed… lots of speed. The fact that it wears the Kawasaki River Mark, a symbol held in high regard within KHI that dates back to the 1870s, and is reserved for rare and limited models with historical significance is purely intentional.

The idea behind the H2 was to offer riders more than they had ever experienced before; more technology, more intelligent styling, more handling, and more power, lots more. The development of the H2 was done in parallel to the track only H2R, a closed course model that represents pure, unadulterated power. From there the H2 cloned as much of its race track brother as possible, while meeting all market restrictions including sound and emissions. The heart of the H2 seems somewhat “traditional” at first glance. An inline, fourcylinder 998cc engine with four-valves per cylinder, fuel injection, and an oversquare architecture (76mm x 55mm) that creates a quick revving engine with a

The intake chamber of the H2 is sculpted for air flow efficiency and is constructed of rigid cast aluminum to both dissipate heat and provide an airtight enclosure to ensure that every ounce of forcefed, supercharged air is channeled into the combustion chamber. 14

bold punch. Yet, to deliver more…way more…the H2 and H2R employed the use of a supercharger. Designed inhouse by Kawasaki engineers, the supercharger unit is the perfect mate to the full-liter engine and is what allows the H2 to produce just shy of 200horsepower. Strip the engine of emission and noise restraints, and the track-only H2R is rumored to produce a whopping 300-horsepower. Surrounding the “charged” liter engine is a host of purpose built, technological advancements, each designed to allow the H2 to achieve its “powerful” goals. The supercharger alone is an engineering exercise that is bursting with innovation and craftsmanship. Residing inside a cast

Cylinder head exhaust ports are oval in shape for improved flow, and the header pipers were hydroformed to match this same shape. It’s a design that ensures optimum performance, but also is stunningly beautiful.

aluminum housing, the CNC machined impeller is formed from pure aluminum, and can increase intake air-pressure by as much as 2.4-times. Due to its efficiency and ideal location at the back and center of the engine supercharger mount, there was no need for an intercooler, which adds weight and robs valuable space. WhatĘźs more, the supercharger uses engine oil for lubrication, the planetary gear train design is driven via a crank gear, allowing the impeller to spin to nearly 130,000 revolu-

tions per minute when the throttle is at fulltwist. From there, every aspect of the engine was analyzed and engineered to work in perfect harmony with this new found, supercharged power; cooling was enhanced, engine strength was increased, valve-train, crankshaft, and piston components were both lightened and made more robust, and airflow both to the combustion chamber and from it was improved.

Look behind the large, angular exhaust that meets stringent sound requirements and you’ll find a cast wheel that delivers more than good looks. In fact, the wheel shape was developed for optimum rigidity and balance at high speeds.

With power pumping through the veins of the new H2 at a level never seen before for a production based motorcycle, Kawasaki engineers had to also rethink the entire chassis, suspension and bodywork to not just harness the power, but to allow it to work seamlessly with the entire motorcycle. While this has been accomplished countless times over in competition-focused bikes that are designed to simply win races, and not beauty pageants, the H2 presented far

2015 Kawasaki Vulcan S

The Un-Conformist

U

tter the word cruiser amongst almost any group of motorcyclists, and visions of sweeping lines and shimmering chrome, cemented in 1950s Americana style immediately come to mind. While this face of the traditional cruiser will likely always be grounded within these boundaries, Kawasakiʼs new Vulcan S has defiantly refuted these boundaries for 2015. The new cruiser blends those traditional stretched lines and relaxed ergonomics with a perimeter frame, inline twin engine, single exposed rear shock, and subtle modern cues such as a teardrop headlight and under-bike, stubby exhaust. The result is a bike that crosses so many lines itʼs hard to simply shoehorn it into any one category, which is precisely what Kawasaki wants. Kawasaki is hoping the new bike will appeal to new riders, looking for a bike with more style than a “conventional” motorcycle, yet still deliver on many of the traits a “do-everything” bike does. A blend of just enough power, low to the ground ergonomics, and nimble handling should help the Vulcan S do just that. More than anything, itʼs the perimeter tubular frame and off-set, single lay-down shock that really sets the Vulcan S apart from other “cruisers”. The net effect gives the bike a dramatic modern flair, while the pull-back bars, teardrop style tank, forward controls and five spoke mag wheels, keep other parts of the bike cemented in the cruiser world. Power comes from a parallel twin, 649cc engine with dual overhead cams, 4-valve per cylinder valve train, and fuel injection, a clear departure from other entry cruisers. Thanks to the perimeter frame and smooth flowing “brushed-appearance” under bike exhaust system that exits via a bold, black, and “fat” silencer, the Vulcan walks the line with style and a hint of performance attitude. Even the rear swingarm was styled into a tubular shape to give the Vulcan a balanced look and a long flowing, continuous line from head stem to rear axle. The Vulcan S really does “fit” a wide swatch of riders, thanks to a low seat height, slim chassis design, and adjustable footpegs that can serve up three positions in 25mm increments. Add in a host of traditional accessories on this non-traditional bike such as windshields, luggage, and of course chrome; and suddenly you have a bike that conforms to no single category, but can appeal to virtually anyone.

greater challenges. Here the bike had to look good…in fact not just good…but to be the most visually stunning and visually pleasing sport bike ever built; a heady task to say the least. Style for speed was the goal of the H2; as with any vehicle, resistance is the greatest power robbing and speed-limiting component to the Holy Grail equation. As speeds increase, so too does resistance, as the wind rushes around, over and under the motorcycle. Such forces not only limits performance, it can have a dramatically negative impact on handling, causing the bike to become nervous, unstable, and at times, down-right scary to ride. Again, to achieve a “slippery”

design that reduces such effects was nothing new for Kawasaki engineers, as they had been doing just that with their winning Super Bike efforts for decades, but to do so with style and rider comfort was a new challenge. They started by making the design as efficient as possible – every nuance, curve and wing was sculpted to make sure it sliced through the air. Next, engineers looked for ways to make the bike more stable; especially at the crazy, triple digit speeds the H2 is capable of reaching. Even the mirrors have a purpose; with airfoil cross-sections, the trailing edges of the mirrors have Gurney flaps that provide greater down force while remaining as small as possible.

You won’t find a Spartan cockpit on this superbike; the H2 is graced with sophisticated and visually appealing controls and gauges.

Normally only found on full-race bikes, the KYB AOS-II Race suspension makes its debut on a road bike via the H2.

KAWASAKI NINJA H2 The result is a bike that looks stunning from any angle, yet is sleek, stable and assists in providing air induction for the supercharger, cooling for the radiator, and heat dissipation for the machine and rider. Unlike other sport bikes, which have a very distinct rider-forward look for improved handling, the H2 is balanced by design, to once again provide optimum performance and stability at speed. The styling goes beyond the bodywork, as is evident by the complete LED lighting system. They are bright, elegant, and provide the necessary intensity and visibility to be deemed “street-legal”. The entire package is then topped off with a unique, mirrored black chrome paint that is akin to custom motorcycles, and is just another step that sets the H2 apart from any other motorcycle ever produced. Of course, all this style and power is a fruitless effort of over-engineering if the experience from the saddle is unsatisfactory. The rush of power and speed aside, the cockpit of the H2 is graced with luxury and technology to make the joining of man and machine appear seamless. The riding position is relaxed by super sport standards, the instrumentation and control panel is high-tech, featuring a multi-

Other key intelligent rider support bits of technology includes an Ohlins electronic steering damper that uses wheel speed sensors to provide “just rightâ€? dampening. Joining the damper is KawasakiĘźs intelligent anti-lock brake system, the same system that was introduced on the Ninja ZX-10R, but revised for the added power and capabilities of the H2. Be it on paper, in person, or from behind the controls, the inclusion of the River Mark on the H2 appears to be more than just wishful thinking on KawasakiĘźs part, on the future significance of this motorcycle. It drips with technology, blinds with style and appeal, and stuns with power and speed. The future of performance motorcycles can be seen now in this one incredible execution of style and speed on two wheels.

The front cowl of the H2 is both gorgeous and a deep-dive exercise in aerodynamics, with each curve and line placed there for a specific purpose.

The Glide Returns as Harley-Davidson Embraces its Past and Looks to the Future BY PAT BOURGEOIS

ueled by what Harley-Davidson calls their

F

Project Rushmore, a consumer centric product development process, the legendary

brand “rushes” into 2015 with one foot still firmly planted in the brand’s rich heritage of building world class cruisers, while taking bold steps into the future with the other. The Milwaukee builder’s 2015 lineup is a blend of returning classics, such as the Road Glide and Road Glide Special, expansion of their three-wheeled endeavors with the Freewheeler Trike, and bold steps towards the future with the stunning electric LiveWire.

The Road Glide Special incorporates a host of additional features including Boom! ™ Box 6.5GT infotainment, with color touch screen and GPS navigation, gloss or denim black painted inner fairing, hand-applied pinstriping, premium Ride hand-adjustable rear suspension, Reflex™ linked brakes with ABS and Smart Security.

Itʼs no secret Harley-Davidson has built a global empire by continuing to reinvent itself and their bread and butter, a vast array of classic American cruisers. After all, HarleyDavidson is, and most likely always will be, the benchmark by which all other classic American cruisers, regardless of where they are built, will be measured by, especially in terms of style. For 2015, this ongoing reinvention of the cruiser takes the form of the Road Glide and Road Glide Special, as they make their triumphant return to the line-up after a one-year hiatus. With its distinctive blunt nosed fairing

and menacing twin-headlight full frontal assault, it has become one of the most beloved HarleyDavidson models amongst avid customizers, who look at the large fairing and unique look as the perfect, blank canvas in which to make something truly unique. Knowing this, HarleyDavidson designers knew they could approach the rebirth of the Road Glide with a bit more leniency than say, other more traditional Harley-Davidson models. “The Road Glide look is more about attitude than tradition,” said Harley-Davidson Principal Stylist, Brian Nelson. “We felt we had more leeway

Despite all that is new with the 2015 Road Glide, classic Harley-Davidson styling remains.

LiveWire Jolts the Future of Harley-Davidson For a company that is steeped in history and built upon more than a century of rich heritage, it was somewhat of a “shock” (pun intended) to the market when the Company unveiled the LiveWire this past summer. Dubbed as Harley-Davidsonʼs first electric motorcycle, the futuristic bike, and the traveling road show that went with it, was a stunning exercise for Harley-Davidson and its loyal customer following, of the forward thinking the company can and does posses. The bike, which was one part future and one part traditional Harley-Davidson, was more than just a design exercise. In fact, the traveling LiveWire Experience allowed consumers to ride the bike, and provide feedback to engineers and designers on their thoughts on not just the bike itself, but the future of motorcycling and Harley-Davidson in general. “Project LiveWire is more like the first electric guitar – not an electric car,” said Mark-Hans Richer, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “Itʼs an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric. Project LiveWire is a bold statement for us as a company and a brand.” The LiveWire project had the motorcycle world buzzing, and in many ways still does, as the incredibly beautiful motorcycle continues to be one of the most viewed motorcycles on the internet, six months after it was first released to the public. The bike not only possess a distinctly futuristic Harley-Davidson look, it also produced a very distinct sound, one unlike ever associated with an electric vehicle before. “We offer a no excuses riding experience in everything we do, and we are led by what our customers tell us matters most,” said Richer. “Because electric vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, we are excited to learn more from riders through the Project LiveWire Experience, to fully understand the definition of success in this market as the technology continues to evolve.” To learn more about Project LiveWire visit www.projectlivewire.com

New Freewheeler Trike

As

the trike market continues to expand, Harley-Davidson retains its dominance in the market with the all-new Freewheeler for 2015. If you never thought the word trike and cool could live together in the same sentence, the new Harley-Davidson Freewheeler may change your thinking. This new trike is pure custom, from its ape hanger bars and bobtail fenders, to cast Enforcer wheels and stylish rear body and integrated trunk that wraps around dual, slash cut mufflers. But there is more to the Freewheeler than pure stunning looks; it is also one of the best riding trikes ever produced. The riding position is extremely comfortable; the 12-inch mini-ape bars put the controls closer to the driver, and the seat is shaped to move the rider further forward, allowing for easier reach of the foot controls as well. This gives the rider more confidence, comfort and control, while at the same time, gives the Freewheeler and very distinctive look. Power comes from a High Output Twin Cam 103 engine, producing a whopping 105ft. lbs of torque; more than enough to power you, a passenger, and all your gear up to freeway speeds, in a blink of an eye. Standard electronic cruise control, a footactivated parking brake, electric reverse gear and a linked brake system that applies both the front and rear brakes trough the rear brake pedal, deliver both convenience and confidence. Unlike many other trikes on the market, the Freewheeler is built upon a frame thatʼs exclusively designed for a three-wheeled vehicle. This means the Freewheeler is more stable and predictable than so many other “kit” options. In fact, just like all HarleyDavidson motorcycles, the Freewheeler is backed by a limited, two-year factory warranty. The new Freewheeler comes to market with a host of genuine Harley-Davidson accessories, including a detachable windshield and backrest, multiple seat options, and an Air Wing luggage rack.

26

with the Road Glide fairing than we did with other, more traditional models in our line.” More than a new look went into the 2015 Road Glide models however. Feedback from customers told HD engineers that there was a need for greater wind protection and less negative buffeting, thus the designs had to not only look good, but had to perform as well. Of course, keeping in HarleyDavidson tradition, engineers also wanted to infuse the latest technology into the new Road Glide, while still retaining many of those classic styling cues that the Road Glide had uniquely owned for many years. The result is an all-new fairing that is edgy and aggressive, yet moves more air up over the riderʼs helmet, and creates a “quiet pocket” of air for the rider. According to Nelson, it was a far bigger challenge than they could have imagined, but the end result nails both the look and performance goals that they set out to achieve. While at first glance, the new Road Glide may simply look like a better version of the original, it also performs better. Tucked inside that more aggressive fairing are Dual Reflector Daymaker LED headlamps that are far brighter, and cast light farther and wider than the 2013 Road Glide lighting system. Instead of two singular housings, the bulbs are in a single, dual beam housing and the appearance is menacing, yet elegant. Thereʼs more to the new Road Glide models however, than just a new fairing and headlamps. The driver position has changed to deliver more comfort; the handlebars are 5.5-inches closer to the rider, the wrist angle is improved, and the seat has also been enhanced.

INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE • THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF SUPERSHOW 2015

Other key changes to the 2015 Road Glide include a new sound system with Bluetooth capability and 4.3-inch full color screen, mated to two 5.25-inch speakers. The driver controls the system through a pair of five-way, thumb operated joystick controls, mounted on the left and right hand controls. As for the meat and potatoes of the Road Glide, key features here include stout 49mm forks, a torque laden, high output Twin Cam 103 engine, Enforcer cast-aluminum wheels, one-touch saddlebag latches and standard cruise control. The Road Glide Special receives all of that, plus select upgrades, such as a larger BOOM Box 6.5-inch touch screen entertainment system with GPS, hand-applied pin-stripping, Reflex linked ABS brakes, a Smart Security system and more. You can learn more and see the new Road Glide for yourself at the 2015 North American International Motorcycle Supershow, at the International Centre, January 2-4, 2015.

Aside from the new lighting and stunning looks, the new Road Glide fairing is slimmer, but delivers vastly improved wind protection and a quieter ride.

A 50-watt Boom Box 4.3-inch audio system is housed in the reshaped inner fairing that’s smoother and uncluttered.

Canadian Racing

at its best

What has grown to become the largest motorsport and action sport series in Canada, the CMRC sanctioned Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan look to be taking yet another step forward in prestige and awareness with fans from coast to coast. In 2014, the championship battles in the MX1 (450cc) and MX2 (250cc) classes were both undecided until the final round. Despite the addition of American superstar Mike Alessi to the big bike class, BC native Colton Facciotti clinched his fourth national title after ten gruelling rounds. Quebecʼs Kaven Benoit secured the win in MX2, making for a Canadian sweep at the top of the podium in each division; quite a feat considering the competition these champions faced. Believe it or not, the 2015 edition is already shaping up to be the best ever. The MX1 class will feature champions from 2012, 2013 and 2014 all on the line at the same time. American Matt Goerke, Australian Brett Metcalfe, and Ontario resident Colton Facciotti will all fight to reclaim their #1 plate in a battle that has already been coined – “The best ever!” The 2015 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan kick off in Kamloops, BC and cross the country all the way to Moncton, NB, visiting six provinces along the way. If youʼre a fan of motorsports or have never witnessed the take-no-prisoners, high flying, bar banging sport of motocross, nowʼs your chance to witness the best racing Canada has to offer. To keep in tune with the series and learn whatʼs in store when the gate drops on May 31st, visit www.mxnationals.ca or Like us on Facebook at /CMRCMX.
