IT’S TIME!
T
he long hot summer is coming to an end and the office here couldnʼt be moving faster. While we all love the hot summer days; with beaches, boats and everything else that goes with it, we canʼt wait for the Powder to fall. The fall shows are gearing up and snowmobilers everywhere are excited to get back into another season, and itʼs setting up to be an awesome one at that. With new models, exciting new concepts, new suspensions, and great new aftermarket products, weʼre more than ready to get rollinʼ. And our first stop is Haydays. Haydays is in early September out in Minnesota, and then weʼve got the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show in mid October; the largest show of its kind in North America!
The long wait for snowmobiling isnʼt over, but the pre-season preparations have arrived. Weʼve made a few additions to the magazine during the off-season, with two new editorial members: Tim Erickson, who in this issue will be taking you through the middle road of the snowmobile market, and Jason MacDonald keeps us in the know with his new Column; The Daily Commute. Both Erickson and MacDonald bolster OSMʼs editorial content for the 2011/2012 publishing season. Donʼt worry, all the regulars are back, including Tucker Hibbert, Levi LaVallee, Paul Thacker, and of course; Mr. “Say It Like This” Bourgeois will be leading the charge for another exciting and entertaining year.
The editorial Extras are all back like; Huckinʼ the Web, Bone Collectors, The Last Gasp, and many more. Returning by popular demand is Crusinʼ YouTube. Thank you to everyone who submitted their picks – we were bombarded with emails and loved every minute of it, so keep up the great Crusinʼ. We have added a new one this year called Anchor of the Month; itʼs based on a sled that has been forgotten over time. Although these snowmobiles may have been forgotten, many of them paved the way to something great. I think youʼll really enjoy it. Let us know what you think; email us at info@osm-mag.com. Until next time, Iʼll be in the garage taking some advice from our Pre-Seasonʼs Buyers Guide. So sit back, relax and enjoy the issue! ✪

EYES ON WINTER
We continue to be amazed by the growing popularity of ESPN’s Winter X Games. While its relevance and impact on the sport of snowmobiling remains up for debate, the raw number of viewers and fans it attracts are hard to ignore. Last winter’s Winter X 15 grew in virtually every measureable category according to ESPN. Web views were up by a whopping 47%; a Winter X Facebook page generated more than 43 million post views, and 39.7 million people from the United States alone tuned in to the Winter X broadcast during the fourday event. Attendance at the event itself was also up, setting a new record at just over 114,000 fans on the slopes of Aspen, Colorado.
9 LIVES PREFER 4 STROKES?
With the long anticipated launch of the new breed Arctic Cat this past March, Cat faithful and curious track kickers were clearly pleased with what they saw in the new ProCross chassis. As the spring early order session came to a close, Cat enjoyed an all-time retail high, with a huge percentage of their overall forecasted sales being gobbled up by feline fans well before the first production ProCross buggies were built. What’s more, four-strokes accounted for a huge percentage of those sales, putting some swagger back into the four-stroke camp as the battle for power in the future of snowmobiling rages on between two-stroke and four-stroke configurations. Adding even more rose tint to the outlook of the sport, dealer inventories for all brands are at record lows and used sled prices are on the rise. “It’s becoming a current sled market again,” said Arctic Cat Marketing chief John Tranby.
THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT
You knew it was just a matter of time until your addiction to your smart phone and snowmobiling would cross paths. During the heat of July this year, Polaris made it happen when they introduced an app for both the Android and iPhone, dubbed Snow Trails. Admittedly addicted to our personal smart phones, we immediately downloaded the free application from the iTunes store. The application comes preloaded with most existing snowmobile trails, (although we immediately noticed two nearby favorites missing from the built-in map). The application also features a nifty search function for Polaris dealers and services such as fuel, lodging and restaurants, weather forecasts and warnings, and the ability to save favorite routes. You can even overlay snow depth to the on screen trail map. Of course these and other features will be dependent upon accurate and up to date information, and more importantly, cell service. 16

SCHUBITZKE BECOMES A SMOOTH OPERATOR
SLEDDERS FALL SHORT AT ESPYS photo by John Hanson
Last fall, just weeks before the 2010 Duluth National Snocross opener went green, the International Series of Champions (ISOC) National Snocross tour announced former pro rider Carl Schubitzke would retire his tether and take over as Race Director for the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series. Now with a year of experience stuffed into his frontal lobe, the long time racer who began his professional career back in 1998, will now take on a broader roll at ISOC as the Director of Operations. While Carl will retain his Race Director duties, his new position will give him the reigns beyond the action between the flags for the entire national tour.
BRP GOES CLUBBING
According to the press release, Club BRP, a shin-ding in Montreal this past July for dealers, distributors, media, employees and the public, was the biggest commercial and technological event in the company’s 70-year history. Aside from all the pomp and circumstance, a few new products were unveiled, including a “bling-bling” Commander 1000, bold new colors for the Spyder roadster, and a redesigned Can-Am Outlander 1000 ATV. Concept vehicles were on display as well, including an electric side-by-side vehicle, a solar powered cart, a gyrocopter, and a flight simulator. To cap-off the event, aging rockers Styx performed a free show to invited attendees at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Rumors swirled immediately after the show that the code name for the new Ski-Doo chassis is indeed Mr. Roboto.
Tucker Hibbert was one of five athletes nominated for the 2011 Best Male Action Sport ESPY Award as part of ESPN’s Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Awards event, held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It was the first time Hibbert was recognized for the award, and only the second time a snowmobile athlete was nominated in the 19-year history of the awards show. Hibbert, who is already one of the most decorated snowmobile racers in the history of the sport, was up for the award against fellow action sport athletes Travis Pastrana, Kevin Rolland, Kelly Slater and Shaun White. A panel of judges selects the nominees, but it’s the fans who ultimately decide the award winner. When the votes were tallied for the 2011 event, it was Shaun White who took home the hardware. Ironically, it was White who beat out the only other snowmobile athlete to be up for the award; Blair Morgan in 2003.
BLOW OUT THE CANDLES As this issue was getting ink applied to paper, the boys and girls from Thief River Falls, Minnesota were gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Cat brand. The two-day party in TRF included live music, new model ATV, UTV and snowmobile displays, demo tracks, factory tours, vintage displays, and way more. While we will have a full Scene It pictorial in the October issue, one of the highlights of the vintage display was the complete Boss Cat trio. During the early boom years of the sport, no other maker was more passionate about speed than Arctic Cat. The Boss Cat I, II and III mark those over the top efforts, and the Warning Family, who painstakingly restored the Boss Cat II and III and recreated the previously destroyed Boss Cat I, had all three on display at the Cat 50th party. After the celebration, the three sleds were transported to St. Germain, Wisconsin where they will become a highlight of the Hall of Fame Museum. IS IT GETTING DARK IN HERE? NEWS
Seems the technology oozing from the BRP facility in Valcourt, Quebec goes beyond direct-injected motors and lightweight chassis. Case in point are perhaps the most techie goggles you’ll find; the new Advanced TEC E-Chrome Goggle from Ski-Doo (it could use a shorter name) that automatically changes from a near clear tint to a dark tint with a touch of a button. Coming to Doo dealerships this fall, the E-Chrome is more than a light sensitive lens; instead the goggle uses electronics to alter the tint level of the anti-fog treated and scratchresistant dual lens. Priced at $249.99 U.S. or $297.99 CAN; laying these high priced wind deflectors over your buggy’s hot pipe to dry is not recommended. The E-Chrome goggle is the premium member of a wide assortment of goggles from Ski-Doo that includes heated versions in both wired and wireless, as well as affordable dual lens Trail Goggles in both adult and junior sizes.
INJURIES THIN THE HERD
Speaking of slimming down and dwindling participation, this past summer has been hard on would be snowmobile racers who typically use motocross to train in the off-season. Aside from Tucker Hibbert who had to have surgery on his wrist after the snocross season concluded, rising stars like Garrett Goodwin and first year pro Logan Christian have experienced motocross racing mishaps that could impact their winter racing exploits. To stay abreast of all the latest racing news we give props to the kids at www.sledracer.com; a one stop shop for racing news and dirt.

TUNING TITUS FOR TERRAIN
NEWS
Could we see blue tuning forks make a return to terrain competition this winter? That appears to be the case, based upon a Facebook post by long time racer Nathan Titus who has close ties with the Japanese maker. You’ll recall Titus spent time working with Yamaha on their USCC cross-country effort, until they pulled the plug on the program. We “poked” Titus to give us more, but at this writing we’ll have to survive on speculation and conjecture, which tastes good, but is hardly filling.
ANOTHER LONG COLD WINTER… WE HOPE SO
According to the Exacta Weather website, (www.exactaweather.com) the coldest winter of the past 30 years graced us last season with record shattering snow and cold. Sun seekers loathed while snowmobilers were nearly delirious with excitement. So what does the forthcoming season have in store? More of the same, according to Exacta. While we won’t go into the over-our-head science of La Nina patterns, Arctic Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the site predicts “a particularly harsh winter for many parts of the United States and Canada… North America will face below average temperatures with above average snowfall.” Nuff said… let the happy dance commence.

TALENT LADEN SLEDNECKS 14
We could go on and on with superlatives and little known, over the top adjectives to describe Slednecks 14, the latest in a line of breakthrough Slednecks films (14 to be exact). But it would be way easier to simply tell you to get your own and see for yourself. Featuring a long list of the world’s best back country riders including Kalle “KJ” Johansson, Chris Burandt, Sahen Skinner, Dan Treadway, and newcomers Brad Gilmore and Grant Clarke, to name a few, Slednecks 14 remains the standard by which all other films are measured. Along with high-definition DVD, you can also pony up for a Blu-ray version for only five more Benjamins. www.slednecks.com
SKI-DOO RACE DIRECTOR IN FLUX
Just when it appeared the Ski-Doo race program was stabilized and building for the future, the cart suddenly appears to be high siding after it was learned Jeff Goodwin would no longer be holding the reigns as Race Director for team yellow. Goodwin, a long time racer who has been associated with the Ski-Doo organization for more than 20 years, had been on the job for a mere two years during a very difficult time. When Jeff took over, budgets were being slashed, many top riders had jumped to other brands, and Goodwin was left with the task of rebuilding a once proud program. To date, it appeared he was on the right track, but this past May, Jeff was let go by BRP and Marcel Imbault will be the interim Race Manager for Ski-Doo. We can only speculate by reading between the lines on this one, but as it relates to Marcel, interim usually means one of two things… the job is yours for the taking, or keep this seat warm till we find another candidate.

THANKS MOM!
Snow and cold is a good thing, at least when it comes to the business of snowmobiling. The latest report from the manufacturers echoed this sentiment as the industry saw positive growth, virtually across the Snowbelt for the first time in a long time. Global snowmobile sales were up 10%, with 123,063 units sold in North America, Europe, and Russia. While still a far cry from the excess and success of the 90’s when sales were nearing 400,000 units, the numbers showed the industry isn’t just breathing, but could be poised for a resurgence. While new sled sales are important, the more telling number in the report was the continued increase in snowmobile registrations. In North America, the number of registered snowmobiles increased by more than 70,000, to a total of more than 2,100,000 buggies in use. While there are certainly several reasons for the industry turn-around, no question the thick blanket of white delivered by Mother Nature should receive the highest praise.
NEWS
FUTURE POLARIS ELECTRIC SNOWMOBILE? Polaris has been anything but idle this summer, as evidenced by some ridiculous stock price growth, partially attributed to two acquisitions made by the growing big “P” empire. The first was a bit of a shocker, as Indian Motorcycles will now reside under the Polaris umbrella. No question, Indian is a legendary motorcycle brand, but it is also one that has been mired in failed rebirths over the past 10-years. With lots of speculation as to how Polaris, Victory and Indian will coexists, it appears Indian will remain unique in the short term as this peek-a-boo photo of a new 2012 model makes evident. The new Indian was unveiled to dealers on July 27th. Polaris also finalized the acquisition of Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) this past spring. The Fargo, North Dakota company has been designing and manufacturing premium, electric-powered vehicles and has been working with Polaris on joint projects for the past several years. The acquisition adds what many expect to be a future biggrowth market in the Polaris arsenal. Is an electric powered snowmobile in our future?

Always the consummate salesman, eventual I-500 Vintage winner Joey Hallstrom looks for an early edge by befriending USCC officials before his flight departs. Hallstrom took the vintage day to heart by running the same numbers on his Cat that he did when he first competed in the 500-mile race in 1979.
Yamaha returned to terrain racing for one brief day last winter as Brett Lessman rode his SS440 in the vintage class in the USCC I-500. Of the 34 riders who started the course that day, only eight finished the race, Lessman unfortunately wasn’t one of them.
Last winter the United States Cross Country Racing Association (USCC) offered a vintage cross-country class during the second day of the I-500 race. Dawn broke with temperatures well below freezing as 34 riders prepared to tackle the 170-mile course aboard 1981 or older snowmobiles. This TX driven by Danny Gruhot begrudgingly crackled to life in the early morning hours.
As we like to say here at OSM, “nothing runs like a dirty Deere”, especially one that has been collecting rat turds for the past 20 years. Brian Hitt of Forest Lake, Minnesota made good on our boast by finishing the 170-mile run. His Deere was the only non-big-four brand to complete the course.
Brian Nelson, a legendary cross-country racer who won the historic I-500 in 1976 aboard a John Deere and again in 1978 with an Arctic Cat, spent all of last summer restoring and tweaking not one, but three 1979 Eltigre’ Cross Country Arctic Cats. Known for his acute attention to detail, Nelson’s buggies were up to the task as two of his sleds finished one, two with Joey Hallstrom taking the win and Nelson himself finishing close behind.
The WOBLE enjoyed its fifth annual ride to the shores of Lake Waconia in January and approximately 50 riders tested their leafer skills. 26

OSM staffers, Kehoe and Bourgeois, participated in the growing vintage ride in the lower 48 simply known as The WOBLE (Waconia or Bust Leaf Spring Expedition). The run-what-ya-brung leaf-spring-only ride covers 40 miles enroot to the huge Midwest Vintage Ride In on Lake Waconia, Minnesota for what many consider to be the largest vintage gathering on the planet. Here a downed Chaparral (the featured sled for the 2012 event) receives frantic diagnostics before the 2-minute “re-fire” clock expired and the “Chap” was loaded onto the “sag wagon”.
TORONTO SNOWMOBILE, ATV & POWERSPORTS SHOW • OCT 14-16, 2011 • TORONTO INTERNATIONAL CENTRE • www.torontosnowmobileatvshow.com
John Sandberg, a former Arctic Cat racer, snowmobile magazine editor, ArcticInsider.com web master, and author of the new 50 Years of the Cat book, started WOBLE as nothing more than a simple vintage ride with a friend. The event which remains nothing more than a gathering of friends, who enjoy old sleds and winter, has blossomed into what many participants call “the best day of winter”.
Don’t expect all perfectly restored leafers on the WOBLE, creative rat rides are just as popular and in many ways more entertaining. Here fellow WOBLER Oberg makes a boastful claim that his well-worn Yamaha will start in three pulls… and it did.
The Midwest Vintage Ride In, held the last weekend in January on the frozen shoreline of Lake Waconia, Minnesota, is a mecca for all things vintage. From perfectly restored snowmobiles like this 245 TNT, to vintage drag races and ovals, to a swap meet and a vintage parade around the lake open to anyone who can get their buggy to fire. Waconia is a vintage party on snow that has become a must attend event for old and new sled heads alike. Ball’s Beater Run is a vintage event in Lena, Wisconsin that is on our must attended list for 2012. The community fundraiser features a vintage show and poker run, and is loosely organized within the true spirit of the sport… having fun. This winter’s event takes place February 4th and we are gunning for the hardware in the “Jalopy” category. Last winter, Dan Netzer took home top honors in the 1966 and older steel track category and as this picture illustrates, he was ecstatic.
You can find anything, and we mean anything, old at the Waconia swap meet. This entire trailer of relics was being offered up for a sweet heart package price. Could one of these beauties be WOBLE bound in 2012?
Celebrating its 28th year, the Snowmobile Hall of Fame and Museum Ride with the Champs, features over 100 riders on both vintage and modern sleds as part of the Hall of Fame induction weekend. A pair of vintage rides became a part of the annual event including a 175-mile “Vintage Challenge” that has taken on a “Cannonball Run” atmosphere. This winter’s ride is slated for February 18, 2012.
Run-what-ya-brung racing is taking off across the snow belt especially in the vintage ranks, where all that is required is a helmet and leaf springs. Every spring, a vintage snow oval race is held in the upper Midwest where old sleds race 10-abreast on a high-banked snow oval track. We saw this sled on Craigs List a week later – “…only ridden once this winter, just needs some TLC and seat cover, a great restoration project.”
Nothing says, “I’m fast” like a frog suit and 12-inch bar risers. Iconic Arctic Cat racer and 2011 Hall of Fame inductee, Jim Dimmerman, led the “Vintage Challenge” participants last winter with his “modified” vintage leafer Cat. The former Eagle River World Champion stuffed a big triple Suzuki under the fiberglass and set the pace for the day.
Only two classes exist in vintage snow oval racing – liquid-cooled and air-cooled. Despite displacement differences in excess of 200cc or more, the short track, high-side tumbles, and mechanical failures create a race where any rider and any sled can win.
Dressing vintage is not required but it can help as proven by this gentleman who was seen doing very well with the ladies after the race.

Weʼll admit that we are often the harshest critics and nitpickers of snowmobile names and acronyms we simply donʼt like. But having experience on the other side of the factory wall, we also know finding a name that is equal parts relevant, appealing, and available is no easy task. Of course that isnʼt about to keep us from throwing stones at glass houses. No matter, here are five buggy names that managed to stick around longer than disco and grunge combined.
Arctic Cat Panther –
40 Years
No other model name, or model for that matter, is held in higher regard within the walls of Arctic Cat and its loyal followers than the Panther. It was a model that forever changed the sport with its innovative slide-rail rear suspension and riveted aluminum chassis; and it single handedly launched Arctic Cat to the forefront of the industry during the early 1970s. Like all Cats, the Panther went fishing in 1982 and 1983, but was one of the first sleds off the line in 1984 and remained in the lineup until 2008.
Ski-Doo Alpine 32 Years
Yamaha Bravo
30 Years
Sometimes the smallest of things can have the most profound impact, such was the case with the mid-sized 1982 Bravo and its accompanied pint-sized 250 single cylinder engine. Not the first “shrunken” snowmobile to be introduced, the Bravoʼs combination of lightweight, easy handling, and bulletproof engine launched an entire segment. While the Bravo may have vanished from most showrooms and brochures in later years, it lived on in long track utility form in remote areas of Canada and Alaska until 2011. During that final model year it made a surprise resurgence in the United States as dealers scrambled to gobble-up the last few models of a mid-sized legend.
Cracking the over 30 list is no easy task. To do so with just one ski is even more significant. While the constructs of the Ski-Doo Alpine model were already in place prior to 1965, it was in this year that the switch was made from alphanumeric designations to names and the Alpine was born. Sporting two 15-inch wide tracks and a mono, center mount ski, the Alpine was not only unique, but proved to be an incredibly competent utility snowmobile. Significant upgrades were made to the Alpine in 1988, and the name changed to the Alpine II. The single ski ride was over however in 1995, when the Alpine was finally retired after 32 years.
Arctic Cat Pantera
28 Years
Polaris Indy Trail
28 Years
While some may think weʼve forgotten about the Polaris Indy as the longest running name in the star of the north history journals, we tend to think of the Indy as a chassis name versus a model. No matter, this interpretation doesnʼt keep Polaris from our list as made evident by the Polaris Indy Trail. Debuting in 1983 as a fan-cooled 440 and later bumped to 488 power in 1986, the Indy Trail defined over a decade of dominance by Polaris, and more specifically the Indy chassis. From its trail smoothing independent suspension and bulletproof engine, to its legendary ride and over-achieving status, no other snowmobile was perhaps more aptly named than the Indy Trail. While the run of the “short-track” Trail was over after the 1999 model year, the Trail named lived on in Touring and RMK trim until 2010.
Appropriately nicknamed the “Catillac” by Arctic Catʼs marketing folks during the late 1970s, the Arctic Cat Pantera debuted in 1975, and returned in 1985 when the “Cat was Back” from the darkness of bankruptcy. Often viewed as the sled that helped to define the snowmobile-touring category, the Pantera was a machine with luxury always on its mind. The early Pantera introduced a longer travel version of Catʼs slide-rail suspension and an ultra plush seat, and those comfort goodies lived on along with many more throughout the Panteraʼs run in the Cat line. The legendary Pantera nameplate was retired after the 2005 model year.

didnʼt know what to think when ESPN contacted me this past June, but my wife Mandi sure was excited. She quickly told me it was the “best birthday present ever.” For the first time in my career, I was nominated for an ESPY Award. I have to admit that Iʼm not a huge stick and ball sports fan, and didnʼt understand the significance of the award until I started getting phone calls, texts, and emails from people congratulating me on my nomination. For those who donʼt know, the ESPY, which stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, is a live annual awards show to honor athletes and teams in a wide array of sports. My division; Best Male Action Sport Athlete, was stacked, so I tried not to set my hopes too high. A panel of judges selected the nominees, and then it was up to fans to vote online for the winner. I was up against Shaun White, Travis
Pastrana, surfer Kelly Slater, and skier Kevin Rolland.
My wife almost fell over when we walked into an elevator at our hotel and shared a ride with Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. With wide eyes, she awkwardly told him sheʼs a huge fan. He smiled, nodded and said thank you in his funny German accent. I know she wanted a photo but was too star-struck to ask. Iʼm not sure how he fit in the elevator with only two inches of head clearance.

Shaun, Travis and I all hit the X Games scene around the same time, but have clearly taken different paths. Shaun transformed into some sort of a fashion icon, and Travis set out to try anything that involved a motor and a ridiculous amount of risk, while I kept my nose to the ground racing. After my nomination, we had two weeks to plan for the event. Mandi quickly set up appointments for a suit fitting…seriously, a suit? She kept telling me, “Itʼs a good investment. Every man should own a suit.” Not my style, but it worked out. It was little surprise that Shaun won, and I was and still am pumped for him. Aside from his tight leather pants, heʼs a dedicated athlete and a fierce competitor, and in my opinion, deserved to be recognized. Overall, the event was over-the-top and exciting to be part of. I canʼt say that I ever thought I would walk down the red carpet next to Jason Kidd. It was a surreal experience. My big interviews were with CNN, The Tonight Show, Fuel TV, and the Food Network. The Food Network was easily my favorite because I got to eat and judge cupcakes for the show “Cupcake Wars.”
Even though I didnʼt win, The ESPYS continues to send me piles of gifts. I canʼt figure it out. I have more tropical vaca-
tions than Iʼll ever take in my lifetime. Mandi is now the proud owner of two espresso machines, and I revolutionized my Dadʼs eBay shopping experience with a HP TouchPad computer. Now with one touch, he can search motorcycles and old Dodge trucks all over the country. Iʼm convinced the further away they are, the more interested he is. Sorry Mom. ✪

Iʼm not much of a partygoer, but the post-party was actually pretty cool. It was low key and packed with good food. The theme was “Class of 2011 Prom.” Mandi and I went to high school prom together, but we didnʼt win prom king and queen. Here was our chance! We put on some dorky crowns and flowers and posed as The ESPYS King and Queen. I think itʼs Christmas card material.
Here it is – my all black suit. Good thing Mandi isnʼt scared of color otherwise we might have looked like we were going to a funeral.

to believe summer is already winding down, but for myself, it has been one of the best off-seasons in a long time. Iʼm pumped to say that this is the first summer since 2009 that Iʼve been able to ride dirt bikes, and itʼs the first time since 2008 that Iʼve been able to enjoy wakeboarding as well. Needless to say, I am excited that my foot is in the best shape itʼs been in since I blew my heel out in 2009. One of the highlights of my summer vacation was an opportunity I had to visit

the Middle East and high five a bunch of real heroes … the men and women in the United States military. The American 300 Tours invited Mike Schultz, (adaptive snocross, motocross and wakeboard athlete and all around man of awesomeness) Glenn Kafka, (Co-owner and crew chief of Team LaVallee, snowmobile wizard, business animal, and super goof ball) Byron Turk, (a video machine who captures, edits, and uploads on no more then 2hours of sleep each day) Rob Powers, better known as Colorado Rob, (announcer,

military veteran, Olympic coach, and the most energetic, none sleeping person I have ever met) and myself (the short guy with the big Red Bull hat). Together we were invited to meet, hang out, and more than anything, be inspired by the troops who are stationed there. It was so cool meeting all the troops and seeing how excited they were to have us over. We got to see what they go through day-in and day-out. Having to work and live in temperatures that can reach in excess of 120-degrees, coping with sand and dust, and having to sleep in tents; these guys are definitely not on vacation. We visited all kinds of troops who specialized in different areas – we hung with the EOD or Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) troops; better known as the bomb squad guys, fire fighters, mechanics, guardsmen, pilots, K-9 specialists, and many more. The K-9 crew was one group that was a real kick to hang with. While we were there they brought one of their dogs, (Gina) out for us to meet. I immediately asked if I could pet the dog, and they said, “Absolutely, just put this coat on first. She likes it when guys wear this thick jacket.” The K-9 folks were looking at me with the strangest grin as I put the coat on with a hint of hesitation. Almost immediately Gina began to drool and I swear she was looking at me like I was a t-bone steak. As I slowly put my hand out to pet her, she lunged at me with a “mouth open smile” and grabbed a mouthful of jacket and arm. She then began to shake and twist violently and I was sure she was going to tear the sleeve from the jacket, or worse yet; my

arm from my body. Fortunately, the K-9 instructor shouted “Let Go!” which I interpreted as “donʼt kill him” and Gina let go. After calming down and realizing my arm was still attached to my body, the instructor suggested I run with Gina. This time I was certain I was being set-up but instead I blurted out, “That sounds like a blast!” which in my head meant, “Please God let me live!” I took off running, not jogging; in hopes I might avoid being a round two appetizer. To my surprise, Gina let me get a fair distance away, and for a moment, I thought I might win this game, but then as soon as that thought entered by brain, Gina was charging at me full-speed. By the time she reached me, I swear she was approaching highway speeds. While still 6 to 8 feet from me, she lunged forward and tagged me square in the back. Iʼm fairly certain I looked like a shopping cart getting hit by a train at full speed as I landed head first in the dirt. Almost as fast, Gina once again grabbed a mouthful of jacket and began to shake violently. Curled up in the fetal position on the ground and about ready to start crying for my mommy, the instructor firmly yelled “Let Go!” which Iʼm sure is dog language for “let him live.” By the time I regained my feet, Gina was sitting and happily wagging her tail. I quickly removed the jacket and thanked the K-9 group for an interesting experience, which means in Levi speak, “Iʼm alive, I have all my limbs, Iʼm getting the heck outta here!” In all honesty, meeting the K-9 group and Gina was an awesome experience, but Iʼm not sure Iʼm ready to wear the “thick” jacket again any time soon! While over there, we also got to check out some of the different planes that the military uses, meet some of the pilots, and watch a B1 take off which was very cool. We also got to drive a MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle. It seriously looks like a Hummer on steroids. It was huge, and while we only got to drive it around the block, it was an awesome experience to drive a million-dollar ride. The entire trip was an incredible experience, and it was an honor to meet the troops and see first hand some of the sacrifices they make for us every day. I definitely left the Middle East with a huge, new found appreciation for all who have served, are currently serving, or planning to serve in the military. They are the real heroes of this country, and if you know someone that has, is, or about to serve, give them a heartfelt thanks. They all receive a mega high-five in my book. ✪

So much has happened in the last six months, Iʼm not even sure where to begin. For starters, Iʼm finally getting accustomed to being in a wheelchair. While Iʼm not a fan, I can now look back and see how things could have been a lot worse, which has allowed me to look forward and see this as a whole new opportunity. I now have a new set of goals and the things I want to accomplish before my legs start working again! (Editorʼs note: Thacker suffered a broken back in November of 2010 while training for the start of the season and the 2011 Winter X Games. The result of the injury is paralysis of his legs.) Thatʼs right; I fully plan on walking again in the very near future, and I continue to work towards that goal every day. This summer has been spent traveling, undergoing therapy, rehab, and trying to stay healthy and in shape. I want to give my body every opportunity to heal; so staying in the best shape possible is just

one thing I can do to ensure that happens. Itʼs a full-time job and there are days when Iʼm in therapy for up to 8hours. Staying positive and keeping a good work ethic is not always easy, but I am slowly starting to regain function in my legs, and those small victories are all it takes for me to keep charging forward! I spent a hot summer weekend in Grantsburg, Wisconsin this past July to enjoy the World Championship Watercross event they have been hosting there for 35-years. If youʼve never been, be sure to put it on your to-do list; itʼs a crazy event. It was a form of snowmobile racing that I had never witnessed before, and despite the 100-degree heat with plenty of humidity, it was a great weekend, and I definitely want to return. Iʼve spent quite a bit of time in Alaska this summer as well, getting my house dialed-in and livable for my wheels. Alaska has had an amazing summer for the most part and it was great to get out to the lake and rivers and do a little fishing. Alaska in the summer is an incredible place, and I really believe there really isnʼt any other place like it in the world. The long days and short nights make for plenty of time for all types of outdoor activities. Since I havenʼt outfitted a dirt bike to be adaptive capable yet, Iʼve been messing with a gambit of remote control (RC) toys. From trucks, helicopters, planes, boats, and what ever else I can find, you name it and Iʼve crashed it!
One of the breakthroughs I had this summer took place when the staff at Craig Hospital in Colorado invited me to test out a contraption called e-legs. Basically, itʼs a robotic exoskeleton that attaches to your torso and legs, and pro-

the most steps and fastest velocity with the equipment. Breaking a record‌thatĘźs how we do things! I had such a great experience, I was invited back to help others and possibly be a spokesman for the product down the road! Lastly, I took in Summer X Games in Los Angles and I was blown away how the athletes continue to elevate their respective sports. From the skaters, BMX riders and moto, everyone is pushing the limits of their sport. The best trick for all the events was simply insane and in some ways, scary to watch. But at the same time, it also motivated me that much more to continue to work towards my goals. I want to give a shout out to all my friends in sunny SoCal who hung out and offered up some great hospitality during the event! As for winter, I have a bunch of stuff in the works including some crazy Winter X Games ideas so stay tuned. One thing is for certain, just because my legs arenĘźt working, doesnĘźt mean IĘźm down and out; nothing is going to slow me down! Until next time - drive fast, take chances, and live life. âœŞ

finding a shiny newmodel buggy parked in your backyard and the keys stuffed inside a jelly stained envelope on your front stoop. For most, the occurrence would be likened to winning the lottery, and such was the case for our unknowing OSM fleet manager in training, Jason MacDonald. You see, Mac (a name he acquired for his love for double bacon by-pass burgers) had a propensity for perpetual boasting of his riding skills and more importantly, riding frequency. Bitter cold, heavy snow fall, rain, sleet, sun-baked parking lots, you name it and Mac would ride in it, on it, through it, or during it. In addition to his big mile point-to-point rides and adventurous afternoon rallies, Mac also rides to work daily – a 28-mile loop of trail, lake, road ditch and open fields. Thus with keys in one hand and note pad in the other, we give you Macʼs Daily Commute as he babbles about those daily rides, long distant and often lost saddlebag journeys, and brief moments of Ricky Bobby throttle heavy glory aboard our fleet of long-term factory loaners. hereʼs never a time youʼre not looking forward to riding the 800 HO CFR and frankly, thatʼs a good thing. Sure the lowslung Cat may not offer all the latest buzzwords and acronyms found on newer chassis offering from Cat, but it doesnʼt have to, the CFR just works. No doubt one of the best attributes of the CFR is the big, beastly, four-plug 800 Suzuki, which leaves little doubt, is making all of itʼs claimed 162 ponies. The Cat reminds you of this too at feeding time, especially when you spool the cap off the oil-injection reservoir and replenish the black crude used to lubri-
cate the beast. Iʼll admit, when a customer is looking to purchase a large displacement performance machine, it comes with the expectation a few more greenbacks will be required at the pump, but the CFRʼs thirst for lube is a bit of head scratcher compared to other big bore two-strokes on the market. Plus, if fuel economy is that important to you, then stop looking at the big boys and their thirst for dead dinosaurs, and turn your attention to a four-stroke or efficient 600cc two-stroke. Last seasonʼs all-new 800HO motor featured a lightened crankshaft, new piston/ cylinder profiles and dual plug head
Jason MacDonald has been immersed and frankly nuts for snowmobiles for nearly as long as he can remember. His first sled was 1971 Skiroule S-400, discovered in his parentʼs garage one Christmas morning. Not long after, enough money was earned to purchase a well-used 1974 Polaris Custom II 530. To say it needed a little work was an understatement, but aside from the “investment” lesson the Custom gave, it also led to a path of powersports technical prowess that continues to this day. design that together made for a stout mill that will not disappoint when the scenery opens up in front of you and you opt to do the same. At idle, the big twin rumbles like a bag of rocks in a dryer, similar to an American made V-twin motorcycle, making things like ski-tips and handlebars gyrate like a Jane Fonda workout video. The fueling appears spot on once you get above 3000 rpm, but below that there is an inability to stabilize the idle and a really muddy spot at initial throttle tip in. But once under way, all of these idiosyncrasies fade away, especially when riding in areas of open spaces where CFR can stretch its legs. Obviously with the introduction of the new ProCross chassis, as well as the comfort focused Twin Spar chassis, the CFR chassis is clearly not the latest available option from Thief River Falls. That being said, the light steering effort and acceptable suspension is just that. While riding an all too often pounded out section of ditch line on a Sunday afternoon, I had my first “episode” with the Gentle Giant. With impact occurring at a speed faster than that of cars on the adjacent paved road, the impact sent the front end skyward. At this point it was duly noted when to back off the throttle and when to let the 800HO do its thing. In smaller trail chatter or your average chopped trail, the balance between front and rear suspension works well and can absorb typical trail debris without upsetting its stride. In an effort to improve compliance, I increased the torsion spring preload to stop the rear arm from bottoming as frequently, but found the front end lost its stellar composure. This forced me to go back to a softer setting on the torsion springs and increase the front track shock spring preload by about 7mm. This helped deliver a

more impact resistant ride, but slightly reduced the classic flat cornering traits Cat is known for. Beyond the ride, itʼs the rider position on the CFR that will take you back to a “deep-in-the-knees” feeling seasoned riders will remember with some degree of fondness. There really isnʼt anything bad about this “classic” riding stance, that is until you are introduced to a rough section of trail, at which time youʼll be unseated an/or forced to hold yourself in a “float” over the seat riding style until smooth terrain returns. Cat had a great thing going with the adjustable handlebars and we were sad to see the quick adjust go away on the new breed Cats. But as is the case with any ergonomic relationship, some riders will find the reach to the throttle and brake lever a bit excessive on the CFR, which detracts from just how nice the bar bend really is.
The stock seat is well padded and even offers up a trunk in the rear with ample storage area,. But a combination of too-low seat and the fever to dig into the always thick Arctic Cat accessory catalogue, prompted me to install the M-style seat, cushioned knee pads against the well contoured console, and a rear storage compartment. This combination dramatically improved the ergonomics of the CFR and really alleviated the knee pain of my wellcured body while making the machine more touring friendly. The M-seat allowed me to feel more “on top” of the machine instead of inside of it, and having the storage bag on the back just made it more viable for a weekend excursion or the daily commute. Like a lot of newer sleds, the 800CFR doesnʼt have one large glowing fault, at least not one that you canʼt work around. When I wanted to go for a short blast with the guys - it answered; time to pack it up for a three-day excursion - the CFR delivered with above average comfort and stability. For the 2012, the low slung chassis and the CFR is little more than another page in Cat history, but the big twin 800 has become a centerpiece of the line-up. With that in mind, throttle control should manage the impact at the pump, and hopefully refined calibrations will reduce the thirst for Saudi crude under the hood. ✪

Polaris Rush 600 Pro-R Some meals have everything it takes to be satisfying: stellar presentation, a great blend of spice and substance, easy to digest and available at a fair price. A fine dining establishment with a great pasta selection usually fits the bill, and Polaris brought its Rush Pro-R 600 to the pasta bar. The Rush 600 Pro-R is the North Star company’s top performance machine for rough trails, for those that otherwise require active riding because they are full of twists and turns. There is a great blend of spice and substance to accomplish either type of terrain. Engine power is delectable with the typical Polaris clutching that is deadon shift efficient; the type appreciated most in corner-to-corner pulls. There is no lag in the driveline and a meaty midrange is always welcome at our table. In order to harvest the most thrills and have the greatest performance success with the Rush, drivers need to be aggressive with body position. This holds true for corner leans as well as forward, rearward positioning in the saddle. Polaris has honed its handling along with a ski upgrade on the 2011 unit and there is another change this year with the move to the Race IFS front end. Polaris claims the new front is served with 20-percent less steering effort, thanks to the new extruded spindles and other race-developed parts. There is a steeper caster and spindle angle that helps to reduce the trail. The other riderbenefit claim is flatter, more precise cornering. We noticed flatter cornering and less effort, but we need more time to

mise with efforts to reduce the muscle requirements to navigate. Presentation and spice is enhanced on the Rush Pro-R models coming to showrooms near you, with that wildlooking rear end and suspension supervised by Walker Evans shocks with all the adjustment necessary – and required, by the way. The rear suspension is sensitive to the right spring preload to avoid a bouncy, over-sprung ride or an under-sprung rear that causes excessive weight transfer. It’s easy to adjust, and also easy to influence with body position. It’s just one of the things that make the Rush an entertaining ride. Diners can’t just lope along – they need to be involved when eating up trail miles in curves and bumps. Some pasta dishes can leave you hungry for more, not long after you leave the table. As far as fair price, while initial purchase price is competitive, the semidirect injected 600 twin two stroke is the thirstiest sled in this establishment.

A new extruded spindle reduces trail in the steering. We noticed Polaris cooked up flatter handling and less steering effort, meeting their claims.
The flatter cornering is due in part to a revised position of the front torque arm. Where the arm mounts to the rail has been raised by about a ½ inch or 13mm. This photo shows the “older” lower to the rail mounting point which was retained on Switchback models.

Arctic Cat F1100 Sno Pro Arctic Cat’s legacy was lightweight handling. In some cases, it can be argued that some of its pre-Twin Spar machines were under built. Raw, unabashed performance and speed came at the expense of some refinement, but when you rode the black and green, you didn’t have to strip off the matching checkered-flag kitty leather to know you were a speedy sort of guy. About the time the Firecats were due to retire, Ski-Doo was well along the development path with its XP chassis – a whiz right into Arctic Cat’s corn flakes. A good dose of the bitterness from its northeastern Canadian competitor will fade with the new ProCross chassis; Cat’s return to the lightweight trail performance. The new F-Series machines are the source of the longest lines and most sneeze guard spizzle for model year 2012, as Cat fans spew decadent adoration towards the new chassis. As far as an entrée, the Thief River Falls, MN fellas grilled up a mean portion of wild game. The Twin Spar effort is infused with lessons from past hunts

TABLE FOR 4 The ability to be active behind the bars is the perfect side dish. Leaning and controlling cornering is a delight – one test driver said the sled handled like it had more trail in the steering than most previous Cats. The steering edge of the ski felt behind the base of the spindle – a quick response, but not quite Ski-Doo precise…yet. The whole package works well, and we expect production units to be better baked than the prototypes we tested in the late spring. While impressed with initial ride quality and the level of completeness for the launch of an all-new spread of buggies, some difference from sled to sled indicates handling was not fully cooked. Note: we rate handling from great to excellent – our expectations are calibrated high. While in 2012 Arctic Cat has the 6banger class represented by its 1100 four-stroke mill, in application since the 2005 model year, the other reason we assign Cat the wild game category is because we believe a new twostroke 6 is in the crosshairs. We’ll see if it’s another round of kill and grill next season. Cat officials reported its dealer orders for the F1100 Sno Pro were strong, and with good reason – this chop is lean and delicious. If a future iteration finds a sixxer two-stroke package with less weight under the hood, this venison steak would become bacon wrapped.

Yamaha FX Nytro RTX Badged as the trail-calibrated, race replica sled, this machine arrives at mealtime dressed in the corporate blue color as seen on the racetracks in recent years. So it’s mealtime … and when hungry tummies are comparing a Nytro RTX to a dinner, we think beef pot roast – warm goodness with enough to please all. widens the range even further – pure culinary delight. The new rMotion skid improves ride comfort and boils three chief benefits to the surface: more travel, more comfort, and easier adjustability. Intrigued? Polaris claimed a true, progressive, rising rate suspension cannot be accomplished inside the confines of the track – thus the reason for the inside/out Rush suspension. Ski-Doo thinks otherwise, claiming the most rising rate motion ratio along with claims of being the most progressive. This means supple on small bumps with a progressive stroke, without harsh bottoming on the big bumps. More comfort comes from both more travel and the spring rate the long stroke enables, and the easy tuning comes from preload adjustments on all three springs in the system. OSM cooked the countryside of the sacred testing grounds near West Yellowstone, and struggled to find adequate trail bumps to fully evaluate the added capability of the rMotion. Our test unit had extra spice with the optional Quick Adjust – a bit of a gimmick, but there is no arguing the ease of trailside tuning. While our performance diet has grilled chicken as its source of protein, we’ll compare the rest of this high-performance nutrition package to an a la carte system. SkiDoo markets its machines differently: by terrain platform, then optioned with engine, suspension, track and cosmetic variances. It’s a customizable process that requires some consumer or dealer education for satisfying the hunger. But coming from a factory with a far too many sled models

The engine we know lasts for a heaping pile of miles – but the Genesis four-stroke EFI triple also gets fantastic mileage. Who doesn’t need to stop for relief in that distance? Seriously. This sled is not for the incontinent. BUYER’S GUIDE
DON’T BE THAT SLEDDER THAT’S NOT PREPARED FOR THE FIRST RIDE. THERE REALLY ISN’T ANY BETTER TIME TO GET PREPARED THAN NOW, WHILE IT’S STILL WARM AND YOU CAN HAVE THE SHOP DOOR OPEN AND GET YOURSELF READY FOR THE FIRST SNOW FALL. TO MAKE SURE YOU DON’T LOOK AS IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST RODEO, WE PREPARED A SHORT LIST OF MUST HAVES, NEED TO HAVE, AND CAN’T RIDE WITHOUTS.
Dayco Belts Is there anything more embarrassing than blowing a belt, not having a spare, and then having to be towed back? Itʼs a day killer if you arenʼt prepared. Never leave the garage or trailer without a replacement belt under the hood. Now is the time to load up on belts, and Dayco has a variety to choose from matching your snowmobile perfectly. We like the Dayco XTX Belt as itʼs the king of belts in this performance ring; with less slippage, better acceleration, helps with engine breaking, tested and proven reliability at over 12,000 RPM and has a one year warranty. Whoʼs in line for a Dayco XTX belt? Riders that choose not to worry about blowing belts, racers like Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder (when he was cool) and Ricky Bobby. As he always wants to go fast. www.dayco.ca

Manufactured of plastic and reinforced with steel tubing, itʼs strong and adjustable to fit your sled. No more bending over, as this is a drive-on and drive-off system. The caster wheels will allow you to push or pull your sled Ezily. Sled Ez Snowmobile Dolly is durable, you wonʼt misplace it nor will it sprout legs. But most of all, your friends will be thrilled to say good-bye to the plumber! Who should purchase this dolly? Individuals that donʼt buy things cause others have it, the trend setter of a group but mostly, guys that are tired of being referred to as plumbers when bending over. www.sledez.com

GREAT PRODUCTS TO GET READY FOR THE SEASON
Woody’s Carbide Runners Thereʼs nothing more ridiculous than watching snowmobiles trying to turn corners with old worn out carbides. Donʼt be that person using trees and berms to get around corners. Start the season right, get fresh ones. Woodyʼs offers a few different options depending on what kind of rider you are. Woodyʼs Ultra Series - Who buys these carbides? Aggressive riders, the leader of the pack kind of attitude, has-beenʼs, could have-beenʼs. If you donʼt need this much carbide, then donʼt get them. Theyʼll require a little more Popeye strength to around the corners. Woodyʼs Trail Blazer IV-6 – Who buys these? The less aggressive rider, one who still needs assurance getting around corners without any consideration. Morgan Freeman when driving Ms. Daisy, or tourists not in a rush, cruising to take in all the sites. www.woodystraction.com
Superclamp Trust us; it stinks when you spend the time carefully loading your trailer, just to find out that your tie downs have all but disappeared over the summer. Maybe youʼve lent them out or youʼve used them on other things. The Superclamp is effective and a safe way to keep your snowmobile secured to any trailer or truck deck. Engineered out of a fibre-filled composite material, its fully adjustable, light weight and with just a simple pull of the pistol grip handle you will be assured that your investment is secure. Your friends wonʼt ask to borrow this system and you wonʼt lose them as they are specifically used only to secure your sled. Who buys or already owns this product? Snowmobilers that are tired of buying tie-downs every season, conversation starters and braggers. www.superclamp.net
Powermadd Hand Guard Flares Yes, itʼs a winter sport, and the cold weather can make any day longer, and any ride down an open field or across the lake a brutal one. These new hand guard flares provide almost triple the protection against wind and debris. They quickly attach to Powermadd Hand Guards. Who should buy these? Trail and lake riders that could use some hand/wind protection, snowmobilers on tour and sledders wanting to add a little toughness to their sled. www.powermadd.com
Tek Vest Super Sport Itʼs always best to think of safety first. Tek Vest offers different protective vests for different types of riders. Even if your ridding style isnʼt considered ʻaggressiveʼ or your snowmobile is a Safari Stratos, the safer you are, the better. So riding on the track or on the trail, itʼs really important to be protected. This “Super Sport” Tek Vest is the most popular model and offers the protection you need. Tek Vest is made in Canada and is made from the safest materials. Who owns a Tek Vest or should? People that have somewhere to be on Monday morning. Racers, fast riders, and Bubble Boy should all pick one up. www.tekrider.com.

Sledwraps.com For those of us that want to be different by personalizing our sled, this product makes a real statement. When one person in a group wraps their sled, itʼs infectious. You will notice more and more of us are wrapping our buggies, giving them a personalized distinction. When Bourgeois wrapped his 86 Yamaha Inviter with ʻBarbieʼ featuring hot pink, we were all delighted with his choice. He said it brought back childhood memories. OSMʼs Erickson and McEwan immediately jumped on the wrap bandwagon. Currently they are looking into a custom Batman and Robin theme. We canʼt wait to see the results – wonder if they come with tights? Sledwraps.com has everything from hot pinks to skulls and zombies. Who wraps it before they ride it? Ron Jeremy, Pat Bourgeois and people who like their ride to be different from yours. www.sledwraps.com

OK, sure. We have all said it to ourselves, had friends say it to us, or had the household boss say it, “What the heck are the marks on the driveway?” When I am questioned under the heat lamp, I stick to blaming aliens or that damn neighborhood kid, – although, “those have always been there” is most common. Sharp carbides will do that, and while I love my sharp carbides on the trails and ice, I actually wince when my sled leaves the garage and goes down the driveway or to the trailer. With Sure Grip Dollies you can actually drive around your pad and even load your trailer with the dollies on your skis. And with the track dolly, you can push your sled anywhere with ease. This is a two-in-one system. Who owns these or should? Snowmobilers that hate carbide marks on driveways, snowmobilers that have wives that know what carbides are and are capable of, and of course Chuck Norris may want to invest in a set. www.suregripdollies.com

Rox Handlebar Risers With so many snowmobilers riding with risers these days, the Rox height adjustable Handlebar Risers couldnʼt have come on to the market at a better time. Theyʼre functional and can be adjusted for every riding condition. You can have them lower for sit-down trail riding and lake riding, and high for stand-up ditch banging and or backcountry riding. With independent left and right risers, they adapt to any "t-stem" width, making the Rox Handlebar Risers useful on different makes and models. Who should buy them? Riders that want to be able to set their riding position up on the fly, or change their position throughout the day; these types of riders usually refers to themselves as ʻa bit of a big dealʼ and could be the father of Mr. Chuck Norris. www.roxspeedfx.com
Dri Wash ’n Guard We always cringe when Big Stu shows up on his new sled that looks like its five years old - everyone has a pig pen friend. If you donʼt have a friend like Big Stuey, Iʼm sorry to give you the news, but you probably are him. Well now is the time to stock up on cleaners and polish. Dri Washʼn Guard is the product of choice here. Itʼs quick, easy and gives a shine Martha Stewart would be proud of. A small amount of elbow grease and the dirt and grime comes off your hood, windshield, belly pan, seat side panels (ohh Stu....you need this) and tunnel. If you really need to know what itʼs made of go to their website but we can tell you that it removes more things that you will encounter during a season.
Tricked Toys We have all done this, shredded our snow flaps with our traction products while reversing. This usually happens at the fuel pump in front of a solid crowd. While theyʼre smiling and shaking their heads, a sick feeling of shame and frustration grows on you. Finally, thereʼs a product that will eliminate that feeling all together. Tricked Toys came up with a simple, affective solution and they call it the “Tricked Toys Snow Flap Savers”. Essentially itʼs a bracket that keeps the form of your snow flap and will hold it in place to avoid you sucking it up. Easy installation and they come in aluminum finish, special powder coat colors, or you can paint it yourself. Who buys this part? Someone who has numerous bolt-on parts and maybe has already installed a Flux Capacitor under the hood. www.tricked-toys.com
Whoʼs going to line up to buy this? We will, we hope Stu will, Martha and every other celebrity with a cooking, cleaning, or decorating show. www.snowmobilehoodcleaner.com

THE GOLDEN YEARS MEMOIRS OF AN ADDICT: CHAPTER “13”
ESKIMO
In
February 1970 I received a phone call from Ray Matte, asking me if I wanted to go to camp for the weekend. Camp is 8 miles down Key River (Key Harbour) on North East Georgian Bay. My Dad, (Bill Long) despite owning the camp since 1949, had never been there in the winter so we packed up the AMC Ambassador Station Wagon, hooked up the Tee Nee boat/box trailer and headed north. We met up with Ray and his parents (Dot and Omar) at Key Marina and gas stop, (now owned by good friends of mine) on the main OFSC trail north. The Mattes owned a 66 OMC Wide Track Snow Cruiser with a 347cc horizontally opposed twin with Bendix carburetor, whereas Dad and I arrived with my new 1970 OMC Snow Cruiser, narrow

track Model 200 with a 309cc single cylinder Kohler and Tillotson carburetor. Before sunrise, supplies were lashed onto a wooden toboggan borrowed from the neighbors earlier in the day. Hint: frozen knots in hemp rope are not a good way to start the day. After a great meal of homemade chili we all settled in for the night; the Mattes in their camp on the north shore, and Dad and I in ours on the south shore. All was well until about 3am Saturday morning when I heard my Dad yelling at the top of his lungs. I rushed into the kitchen to find it empty with wind and snow blowing in the back door. I looked out the door towards the outhouse and could not see the old man, but I could hear him loud and clear. It took a few seconds for me to realize he was not pinned in the outhouse by a bear

or a wolf, but under the cottage. I jumped down into the snow grabbed his hands and pulled him out. After warming up, Dad told me the story. He had to relieve himself and stepped out the back door onto the steps. Wrong, the steps were almost completely gone. It seems that weekend after weekend of relieving oneʼs self on the steps at night had attracted the local porcupines, which in turn destroyed the steps for the salt content. On Saturday morning we awoke to a glorious Canadian winter day. The sun was out and the temperature was around freezing with new snow on the river. While eating breakfast an ice fisherman stopped and asked if we were the Mattes. It seems Rayʼs Uncle was to join us Saturday morning, but only made it half way down the river when his brand new Eskimo snowmobile broke down. This model came with a 735 Sachs motor, breathing through a single HD Tillotson, and was propelled by a single sprocket center drive track. While the horsepower of the Sachs was not that impressive, the torque was. It was likely the torque that tore out 90% of the crossbars, splitting the track in half. The local Sudbury dealer eventually replaced the track with a double sprocket track and drive cogs which, despite his assurances to the contrary, looked amazingly like those out of a 1970 Olympic 399. Later in the winter, I rode the Eskimo around Skead and Bolands Bay on Lake Wahnapitae, north of Sudbury, Ont., and found the sled to be somewhat similar to the early Ski-Doo Olympic in looks, seating and steering effort. That is where the similarities ended. This sled was
TORONTO SNOWMOBILE, ATV & POWERSPORTS SHOW • OCT 14-16, 2011 • TORONTO INTERNATIONAL CENTRE • www.torontosnowmobileatvshow.com
lighter, wider and easier to throw around. It reacted immediately and predictably to body English, and accelerated quite a bit faster. I did note the Eskimo seemed to have better wind protection and a larger area for your boots. Once the twin window track had been installed, the Eskimo became a workhorse. With the big cc, low horsepower, high torque Sachs engine, this monster could haul the mail. No matter how big the moose, this sled was able to pull it out of the bush on a trapper style sleigh. As we are all aware, torque gets you moving and accelerating, while horsepower gives you top end. This particular Eskimo was no speed demon, but I would imagine a collector could easily change the gearing and clutching and have a very fast vintage grass drag sled. From the meagre information available, I have determined that four models were available in 1969, and that all were powered by a Sachs engine with between 15 and 25 hp. Eskimos were competitively priced, despite the more expensive
“aircraft aluminium tunnel and bulkheads, “where pounds and strength are critical. Prices ranged between $795.00 and $1,195.00US. Auto Neige Eskimo Inc. eventually moved production from Ste. Henedine, PQ to 91 Humus Blvd. Pointe Claire, PQ (same town that made that famous HusSki). In 1970 it was announced that Eskimo snowmobiles were forced to suspend operations when its parent company, Agratec Industries Limited of Calgary, encountered financial problems. Agratec was then acquired by Durish Investment Corporation. McKee Brothers, a division of Durish were charged with turning the operation around. It was further noted that 1970 production had been pre-ordered and required 50 sleds per day to be built to meet advance orders from both the USA and Canada. The 1970 Eskimo was built in Pointe Claire, PQ and came in 8 different models and 3 different hood styles. They were
distributed in the USA by FMB LaCrosse Wisconsin. By this time the sleds came with either a 15 inch or 18 inch track under an all “aircraftâ€? aluminum tunnel and bulkhead, with Sachs motors between 277cc and 735cc. Depending on the model, the sleds were between 95 and 100 inches long, 34 to 39 inches wide, and weighed between 280 and 400 pounds. To the best of my knowledge, all models came in a really vile green colour. In 1971, only the Sachs engine was used. Later in 1971, the company was sold to M & R Sales Inc. of Wisconsin, USA who offered only three models for 1972, powered with German made Hirth engines. Sales brochures were printed and distributed, announcing the 73 lineup, but to the best of my knowledge, no sleds were actually made or sold. âœŞ

BONE COLLECTORS While displacement often still reigns supreme, our minds wandered to thoughts of boosted Sno Pro 500 two-stroke with one of these gently used turbo units.
To the locals in Thief River Falls, Minnesota and those within the Arctic Cat circle of trust, the Spartan steel walled building on the outskirts of town is simply known as “Salvage”. Secured by a typical chain link fence and its own diminutive appearance against the vast horizon and far reaching expanses of the Red River Valley, the facility serves as an organized bone-yard for all things Arctic Cat. Accessible only to authorized Cat personnel and Arctic Cat dealers, Arctic Cat Special Services Department, the “formal” name for the facility, secures and organizes everything from complete vehicles, parts, clothing, and much more. The items come from a variety of sources, most notably excess dealership inventory and factory closeouts, but regardless of the source, the “collection” is continuously changing and a mind boggling treasure for those whoʼs veins flow green.

NUTRITION AND TRAINING DREW ROBERTSON
LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER GREAT SEASON! ello OSM readers! I hope you had yourselves a great summer, and are now looking forward to another great season on your snowmobile. The racing side of snowmobiling is going to be crazy; in the CSRA you have rookie pro Dylan Hall coming off a season that saw him win both semi-pro championships, and is bound and determined to show he belongs in the pro ranks. South of the border in the ISOC, you have Cody Thompson, Kyle Pallin, and Mike Bauer stepping up to the pro class to shake things up a bit. I think we are going to see some of the veteran racers put to the test. Each year the young guys seem to step it up a bit, and this year the pro classes in both the CSRA and the ISOC
H
are going to be fun to watch! Now not all of you are racers; some ride in the mountains, some trail ride, and some might just go ditch banging. No matter what you do on a snowmobile though, you need to make sure that just like fueling your sled; you need to fuel your body properly. I have written about some nutrition techniques in this very magazine before, and what I want to talk to you about today is using supplements. I’m a huge advocate of people eating whole food, drinking water and getting lots of fruits and vegetables into themselves. However, even with the best of intentions, we might fall short. And let’s be real for a second; it’s pretty hard to pack a banana, blueberries, strawberries,
a salad, chicken and whatever on the trail with you. I would suggest making a healthy sandwich; maybe with chicken, spinach, a little cheese, sprouts and a little olive oil, (instead of butter) and placing it in a Ziploc or Glad container and taking it with you. The supplements that I started to mention are going to be used in conjunction with eating right and will make it easier for you to stay hydrated and recover, so you can enjoy multiple days of riding. Now some of you may know that I used to run a supplement company called Evolved Nutrition. We made a creatine, glutamine, beta alanine, as well as a protein and weight gainer supplement. Not willing to sacrifice quality, we unfortunately had to

close that part of the business down a couple of years ago as it was hard to compete with cheaply made, over marketed products that are all over the place today. I have been searching for a company to align with to help my athletes achieve the next level of athletic performance, and up until a month ago I had yet to find such a company. Enter Intensity Nutrition. We talked back and forth, and after spending time researching and communicating with Mike Ryan, who is one of the owners and a former US Navy SEAL, I realized I had finally found the right company! When Mike and I were talking, he kept telling me that he was not going to let quality slip. He had made sure to use the best quality ingredients and use the proper amount of ingredients, and none of these “proprietary” blend label tricks that we see much of these days. They make three products; FUEL, HYDRATE and RECOVER. Let’s go through each product briefly and let you know when to use it and why. FUEL – take this on days that you’re doing intense circuit type training. This product contains beta-alanine and arginine which will help your muscles fight off fatigue. It also contains creatine…now before you write me an email worrying
about arm pump or gaining 30 lbs of muscle and having no neck, we are only taking this product on days that we are weight training / circuit training; at most 2-3 days a week. The creatine will be used up in the workout, and since you’re training for power endurance / strength endurance and not doing arm curls in the mirror, you don’t need to worry about adding size. Take this product 45-60 minutes prior to working out. This is a great product to be using right now as you workout and prepare for the upcoming season. During the riding season, take it only on days you are working out. HYDRATE - provides the necessary nutrients to maintain a proper electrolyte balance, reduce muscle fatigue and cramping and helps maintain proper hydration. You can take this product now during your longer cardio sessions, and then sip on a serving or two of this as you’re riding to ensure that you stay properly hydrated. RECOVER – Love this product; it mixes well, tastes great and the ingredients in this help you RECOVER, as the name implies. It’s a great mix of isolate / concentrate protein, along with micellar
casein, and carbohydrates to help replenish depleted glycogen levels. Add to that a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, and Glutamine! If you’ve had a long hard day of riding and training, then RECOVER is the product for you!! Recover also contains digestive enzymes in order to maximize absorption, so when you’re done a long bike ride, a long run, an intense interval day, or you spent the day on the trails, make sure to get RECOVER into you! The last two products; HYDRATE and RECOVER are ideal for the riders who are heading out on long rides, for multiple days. These two products will help ensure that you enjoy your trip, because as we all know, if you are tired and sore, it’s no fun pounding down the trails. I have worked out a special deal with Intensity Nutrition so that all OSM readers get a discount, so send me an email and I will send you back the discount code for you to use when ordering from their site! Until next time; train hard, eat right, do a snow dance and make sure you get a hold of me to get your discount code for Intensity Nutrition. LUCKY 13! F
ebruary 3, 4, & 5, 2012 will mark the 13th anniversary for the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run. Some may have a superstition surrounding the number 13, but we are super excited for our Lucky 13th event!

We are thrilled to be able to carry on Kellyʼs legacy and continue to help those across Canada diagnosed with breast cancer. Our 12th annual event was our most successful in terms of fundraising, which peaked at an all time high of $435,000.00. “Pretty amazing for a small group snowmobilers. It just goes to show how caring sledders are,” says Suzy Stenoff, Co-Founder. Over the past 12 years, the hard work of participants, sponsors and volunteers have raised over $2.5 million, helping breast cancer patients across the country! Kelly Shires faced her own encounter with the disease before losing her battle in the fall of 2004. She saw first-hand the hardships that come along with a cancer diagnosis and immediately wanted to focus her energy on making the battle easier for others. Until there is a cure for the disease, Kellyʼs charity run by a small group of extremely dedicated volunteers hopes to continue to alleviate the financial burden faced when going through a diagnosis and treatment. Itʼs a
story we all hear too often; a family member, friend, or co-worker is diagnosed with cancer, and while the world keeps turning, their whole world is turned upside down. Many who are battling the disease are unable to work while they receive treatment and focus on their recovery and future. Many items are not covered by public or private healthcare and can be quite expensive, and not everyone is fortunate enough to qualify for government funding programs or long-term/short-term disability. Kelly Shires identified this issue in 2000 and decided this is where the charity needed to focus. To date, the charity has helped thousands of people with their financial battle with the disease and itʼs all thanks to the dedicated snowmobiling community that surrounds us. The charity has received many cards and letters of appreciation throughout the years. Here are a few notes recently received: “…A note of deep and sincere thanks for the financial assistance. It has been

KELLY SHIRES BREAST CANCER SNOW RUN a long road with many obstacles this past year, since being diagnosed with breast cancer. Just getting food on the table and keeping a roof over our heads has been difficult to say the least. The help from your foundation has kept us going. I am very grateful that it came through at just the right time; a true light in the darkness of battling this terrible illness. I have read about Kelly and her legacy and am inspired by the support and commitment of all involved in running this amazing organization. Thank you for helping me, it has made a world of difference” – Carole. “...I want to say thank you, thank you many times over. Without you, my struggles financially would have affected my recovery. You kept me afloat; you help me keep a roof over my head! Thank you to everyone in your organization and your donors. I am forever grateful.” – Stephanie. This is just a small sample of the types of letters and cards the charity continually receives. Itʼs hearing the stories of the people we are helping that keeps the momentum going and the motivation strong in continuing these efforts. Each year the Snow Run event seems to get bigger and better, and we are
really excited about this upcoming February to celebrate our Lucky 13th event! We are pleased to announce that the event will be held at Hidden Valley Resort in Huntsville again this year. The Resort is under new ownership and many exciting updates, changes and renovations have already taken place since our last event. We canʼt wait to welcome back past participants and of course are always happily extend our welcome to any newcomers that wish to come out and join the excitement of the weekend. The main attraction of the event is the all-ladies snowmobile ride, but the whole weekend is packed with fun that allows participants to play a part in as much or as little as they want. On Friday when participants arrive at the Resort, they are greeted by the most wonderful grounds crew, who are there to help off-load snowmobiles and help with parking of trucks and trailers before heading up to check in at the resort. Early Friday afternoon the “Pink Market” is open, where various vendors showcase a variety of items that you can purchase to support the cause. In the heart of the pink market you will find our amazing registration team who get the ladies all organized
and set for the weekend, starting off with the fundraising incentive gifts and goody bags. Once ladies register, they have a few hours before the next planned activity starts and are welcome to go for a blast on the trails or relax at the resort. In the evening, the Friday night “MeetʼnʼGreet” takes place, hosted by Carey Moran from Kicx FM 106. The idea behind the “MeetʼnʼGreet” is to get the ladies to mingle, and to allow them the chance to catch up with friends they have met at previous events. It is a fun-filled evening with a casual buffet dinner, team building games, and fun activities including the famous decorated bra contest (see website for contest details). On Saturday morning, riders are treated to a full buffet breakfast before heading out to the staging area. While we are all enjoying breakfast the grounds crew is ensuring everything is perfect for opening ceremonies, and this is also when the panel is out, secretly judging the decorated sled contest.

KELLY SHIRES BREAST CANCER SNOW RUN
Opening ceremonies is always a bittersweet time where riders are welcomed, a moment of silence is observed in honour of those who have lost their battle with the disease, then everyone dances like nobodyʼs watching to the event theme song “Man, I feel like a woman” by Shania Twain (the theme song was chosen by Kelly Shires). Once everyone is warmed up, the teams are ready to hit the trails. (This event has a team for every level of rider, and riders choose their team based on their riding ability and/or comfort level). Teams are cheered on as they leave the staging area and head out on the Muskoka trails, which are superbly groomed by the local snowmobile clubs. Teams head off on their designated routes, and all meet up at the lunch destination where everyone enjoys a delicious lunch. The teams then head back out on the trails, ending up back at Hidden Valley Resort. Upon arrival, the groups are greeted with coffee, hot chocolate and treats donated by RadioWorld and Hidden Valley Resort. While the riders are relaxing and getting ready for the eveningʼs festivities, the volunteers are busy inside setting up the silent auction and banquet for the evening. The evening is always filled with fun; silent & live auctions, awards and raffles. For those still roaring to go, the dance floor is ready for you to dance the night away. The weekend concludes Sunday morning with a buffet breakfast and full of wonderful memories. It is because of Kellyʼs vision combined with the hard work of volunteers, participants and our sponsors that we are able to offer this continued support, and we are extremely thankful for everyoneʼs efforts in keeping Kellyʼs legacy thriving. Be sure to come and visit us at the upcoming Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show, October 14, 15 & 16 at the International Centre.

The New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs La Fédération des Clubs de Motoneige du Nouveau-Brunswick NBFSC’s 30th Anniversary Events in 2012 New Brunswick’s first snowmobile clubs were an opportunity to socialize but more importantly organize activities and trails so riding and snowmobiling could expand responsibly. The first meetings of some of those N.B. clubs are recorded in minutes, at today’s NBFSC office in Woodstock, N.B., from the winter of 1979. In the spring of 1982 the first officers and first clubs of the company incorporated The New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Inc. (NBFSC). They were: • • • •

The 2012 winter tourism season will be the NBFSC’s celebration of 30-years of organized snowmobiling in New Brunswick. Events are both spread out over all three months and also offer a variety of opportunities to participate, in order to include as many snowmobilers, member clubs and Corporate Partners as possible.
As New Brunswick was the first snowmobile organization in North America to capture the imagination and enthusiasm of those of us with older snowmobiles; Classics and Antiques we have for this season also planned ‘ride-ins’ that are for everyone but with a distinct flavor towards the older iron. Classic & Antique Ride In; O’Donnell’s Cottages–Doaktown: Saturday, January 21, 2012 www.odonnellscottages.com The first 30th Anniversary Event will be held in the centre of the province just off Provincial Trail #42, not far from Provincial #58 and right on Local Trail #586. The Ride-In is for all snowmobilers in the region or make it a weekend away. We will give a little more attention to all those older sleds; fan cooled, free airs, leaf springs and tillotson carburetors and will be especially looking for anybody who has a 1982 sled, any brand, running. More prizes, special rides, fund raising for Easter Seals and a grand old time bonfire on the shores of the Miramichi for the first provincial Ride-In event in 2012. Classic & Antique Ride In; Adair’s Wilderness Lodge - Shepody: Saturday, January 28, 2012 www.adairswlodge.com The ride-in is for everyone to ride, to visit this region and take part in the day. Special demonstrations, a ‘show and shine’ and vintage rides may occur for the older iron. Besides an opportunity to plan your group’s ride-in to the day’s events, there will be fund raising for Easter Seals and special guests, the Antique & Classic Snowmobile Club of Canada. The day will be capped off by a giant bonfire at the lodge. Find Adair’s on NBFSC Local Trail #811 not far from NBFSC Provincial Trail #31. Join the NBFSC for the second of three provincial RideIn events in 2012. Maritime “Go Snowmobiling” Rides; N.B. N.S. & PEI w/ Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo, Polaris & Yamaha: First week of February, 2012 www.gosnowmobiling.org The NBFSC will for the 4th consecutive season with our Corporate Partners and friends from SANS (Snowmobiler’s Association of Nova Scotia), and the PEISA (Prince Edward Island Snowmobile

Association) host Government guests, new riders, media personalities and possibly Corporate Partners on a short day ride in each province. The NBFSC rode with Premier Shawn Graham in 2010 and hosted Premier Dave Alward and Tourism & Parks Minister Trevor Holder in 2011. Easter Seals-30th Snowarama at Mactaquac Provincial Park: Saturday, February 18th, 2012 www.easterseals.nb.ca Thirty years of organized snowmobiling is only matched by the 30-year partnership with Easter Seals New Brunswick; Snowarama. Snowmobilers and our member clubs will join the Kids and Friends at Mactaquac Provincial Park to raise money for those with special needs. Since 1982 the NBFSC’s volunteers and participating snowmobile riders have raised over $1.4 million. NBFSC Groomer Workshop at Mont Farlagne – Edmundston: Friday & Saturday, February 17th & 18th, 2012 www.nbfsc.com The NBFSC for the third consecutive season will play host to the manufacturers, distributors, and dealers of the industries Trail Grooming equipment. We have invited NBFSC Corporate Partners, Equipement PlannordPrinoth, Lamtrac International, Get Snow LLCTucker and Soucy International. Other invitees will be Gilbert, Sur-Trac and Pisten Bully. All day Friday and Saturday morning will be your chance to view, demo and ask questions of the representatives of the machines (and volunteers) that make your ride so enjoyable. Find us right beside NBFSC Provincial Trail #12. NBFSC’s 30th Wall of Fame Weekend; Atlantic Host, Bathurst: Friday (evening) & Saturday, March 2nd, 3rd, 2012 www.atlantichost.com The NBFSC Snowmobiler’s Wall of Fame is hosted by the gracious gratitude of our friends and owner Keith DeGrace of Auberge Atlantic Host Hotel. (Located on Provincial Trail #19). All the invited inductees of the 25th Anniversary Class as well as five (5) new inductees will be treated to a weekend of memories and camaraderie. We have added a Friday evening social event for all snowmobilers, a ride with the Presidents in 2012 and the Inductee’s banquet on Saturday evening. We owe special gratitude to these past and present volunteers, partners and builders as they are the reason we have the trail system we do in 2012.
Irving Oil / NBFSC President’s Ride: Friday (evening) & Saturday, March 2nd, 3rd, 2012 www.irvingoil.com & www.nbfsc.com Now in its 9th year we are pleased to again, host the annual Irving Oil President’s Ride. Irving Oil has been the Exclusive Corporate Partner of the NBFSC since 2001-2002 and we will once again be treating the NBFSC’s Past Presidents, current Club Presidents and many Corporate Partners for a vigorous Saturday Ride. NBFSC Award Winners from 2011 are also invited to the President’s Ride. In 2012, it is expected that NBFSC Zone 3 will host the Irving Oil President’s Ride, our annual celebration of volunteerism and partnerships. 30th Anniversary, Trans Canadian Snowmobile Trail Ride: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, March 6th, 7th, 8th, 2012 www.nbfsc.com A new and unique event during the 30th Anniversary is the plans for a ride retracing the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organization’s (CCSO) Trans Canadian Snowmobile Trail (TCST) Ride in the winter of 1998. Past NBFSC Vice President Peter (Rhubarb) Randall was the NBFSC’s representative on that historic ride. Not finalized but the ride will likely begin in Sackville, travel NBFSC #52 to Miramichi, ride to Bathurst on NBFSC #19, then Campbellton by NBFSC Trail #22, head west on NBFSC #17, via “Moose Valley” to Edmundston with riders ending their TCST ride on NBFSC Trail #12 where it joins Quebec’s Trail #85. This is the same route That NBFSC Past President Bob Walsh and General Manager Ross Antworth guided the CCSO over in 1998, now the NBFSC’s TCST route through N.B.
Classic & Antique Ride In; Chalets Restigouche-Kedgwick River Saturday, March 17th, 2012 www.chaletsrestigouche.com The third provincial Ride-In devoted to the celebration of 30-years of snowmobiling, and snowmobiles, will be right on NBFSC Provincial Trail #17; Chalets Restigouche. We want everyone to come out and again we are also looking for all those sleds no longer made – Sno Jet’s, Moto Ski’s, Scorpion’s, Rupp’s, Evinrude-Johnson’s, Boa Ski’s, Chaparral’s, Snow Cruisers, Snow Prince’s, Skiroule’s, Kawasaki’s, John Deere’s, Manta’s, Massey Ferguson’s and Mercs. (There were over 100 manufacturers!). Fund raising for Easter Seals, special classes and prizes and our traditional bonfire near the shores of the mighty Restigouche will close this final event of the NBFSC’s 30th Anniversary.
We trust we have an event for everyone. The NBFSC has grown to be Canada’s third largest snowmobile organization and a leader and innovator in much of its business; the very first Classic & Antique Trail Permits in North America, in 2007. The recognition that we are the Province of New Brunswick’s winter tourism is envied by many and the dream of those volunteers in 1979 and then again at our founding in 1982. Join us all winter and visit our website; www.nbfsc.com this autumn and winter to receive up-dates, stories and photos of the ‘White Gold’, we love.

The connection snowmobiling creates regardless of age or ability was on display in spades during Catʼs 50th celebration. Former cross-country great Jeremy Fyle was collecting signatures just like the rest of us as he receives original Arctic Cat Sno Pro racer Dave Thompsonʼs signature.
A
rmed with a fresh Sharpie and the new commemorative Arctic Cat 50th anniversary book, “50 Years of the Cat”, I was like a kid in a candy store as I walked through the clustered crowds of Cat fanatics who had made the pilgrimage to Thief River Falls, Minnesota to celebrate the iconic brandʼs birthday. The new book was a fitting tribute to a company that had endured so many challenges including bankruptcy; it was filled with photos of significant snowmobiles, ATVs, and watercraft throughout. The 50th celebration was teaming with product displays both new and old. Two arenas were overflowing with significant vehicles including early race sleds, a trio of speed inspired Boss Cats, and a host of one-off engineering mock-ups that wore the scars of lessons learned, both good and bad. There were plenty of new products too, including complete 2012 snowmobile and off-road displays and the public unveiling of the all-new Wildcat side-by-side. Each snowmobile I saw, old or new, had a story to tell; be it a significant race victory, an industry altering innovation, or more often than not, a snowmobiling memory for not just me, but also for the thousands who strolled through the displays during the two-day affair. My head was on a swivel as I walked the Pennington County fairgrounds where the celebration took place. To my left I saw racing icons like two-time Eagle River champion Jim Dimmerman along with

famous Cat racers like Roger Janssen, winner of the 1969 Eagle River Derby, Larry Coltom, one of the all-time winningest racers in snowmobiling racing, and of course Tucker Hibbert and his father Kirk. To my right, I found an old college roommate who was bitten by the snowmobile bug as bad as I had been, and a long time acquaintance who still spoke with the same passion to ride as he did when I first met him 20 years ago. In between were fellow magazine editors, weekend riding friends, aftermarket company representatives, and a host of folks whom I met for the first time. No matter who it was, it was nearly impossible to walk more than 10paces and not be met by another handshake, smile, and conversation. From the old sleds and live music, to delicious food and off-road demo tracks, it was an incredible birthday bash, but what made the weekend truly special were the people. It was their smiles and stories that served as a vivid and “real” reminder of what makes this sport truly enjoyable and addictive. It was a fact not lost within the pages of the hardcover commemorative book that, by Sunday morning was filled with signatures of racing greats, inspirational Arctic Cat employees, and passionate Arctic Cat fans. It was the same for many others in attendance, and with each signature came a conversation and another lasting snowmobiling memory.
Perhaps one of my lasting memories of the weekend came not so much from my own personal encounter, but rather watching those of another. Roger Skime, (who is profiled this issue in Last Gasp) Arctic Catʼs Vice President of Engineering, has been with Arctic Cat for 50 years and counting, and is one of the most passionate and genuine people youʼll meet - period. For Roger, Arctic Catʼs 50th party was a time to celebrate and reflect on the personal blood, sweat, and tears he gave, not just to Arctic Cat, but more so for a sport he loves so dearly. Roger truly did look like a kid in a candy store as he made his way around the fairgrounds shaking hands, conversing, and most importantly, smiling like I had never seen since knowing him. Rogerʼs passion and the passion shared by others that weekend reminded me why I was there, and why I continue to call this industry home. While each of us enjoys the thrill and adventure associated with snowmobiling, when the snow dust settles, itʼs the memories we make with those we share that experience with that we cherish for years to come. Itʼs those connections and those people that truly make this sport so incredibly addictive; and it was made even more evident this past summer. Itʼs those connections to people that fueled the impetus for On Snow Magazine, and continues to do so with even more vigor this season. New to the OSM fold are additional “connections” that I am proud to say are more than acquaintances. My good friend and veteran of the industry, Tim Erickson, has joined us this winter, bringing his experience, expertise, and dry wit to the pages of On Snow. Joining Tim is Jason MacDonald, a man who knows his way around the shop and has a passion to ride, no matter the vehicle. With them, our cast of industry guest columnists of Tucker Hibbert, Levi LaVallee, and Paul Thacker return, and they will be joined in future issues by freestyle king, Heath Frisby and Yamaha cross-country racer Nathan Titus. This collection of characters along with returning OSM staffers is most certainly varied in background, ability, and personality; but despite those differences, we all share a love for snowmobiling. More importantly, we share a passion and a “connection” that will last a lifetime. ✪

Roger Skime Vice President of Engineering, Arctic Cat We captured this photo of Roger just before he took the stage during an Arctic Cat fashion show during their 50th celebration in Thief River Falls. Roger was wearing his first snowmobile racing suit (and accompanying helmet) from a time when Cats were still sprayed red.
While Edgar Hetteen may have founded Arctic Cat, Roger Skime, the Vice President of Engineering is unquestionably the heart and soul of the company. He has dedicated his life to snowmobiling and more importantly Arctic Cat since 1962 when Edgar gave Roger “a life, not a job,” as Roger puts it. It would be impossible to find anyone within the snowmobile industry who has a disparaging word about the man whose passion, love and dedication for the sport and people, knows no bounds. Roger is an inspiration to all who have received his firm handshake or worked with him during his 50 years at Arctic Cat. LAST SNOWMOBILE RIDE YOU TOOK?
