A holiday season celebration, a capella! The King’s Singers are instantly recognizable for their spot-on intonation, impeccable vocal blend, flawless articulation of the text, and incisive timing. They are also consummate entertainers: a class act with a delightfully British wit. This holiday concert includes Renaissance motets, hymns, carols, cantatas, and songs for Christmas by Lassus, Praetorius, Rutter, Poulenc, and Howells, as well as the King’s Singers’ own Christopher Gabbitas. It concludes with traditional Catalan folk melodies and seasonal songs in close harmony.

PROGRAMME BACH: Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829 LISZT: Années de pèlerinage: deuxième année: Italie BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Op. 110

Quatuor Mosaïques is in a class of its own. This leading authentic-performance ensemble from Austria presents music only from the classical and early romantic eras, when the string quartet was in its prime. Quatuor Mosaïques’ approach may be highly focused, but the repertoire is lush and expansive, with masterpieces by Haydn, Mozart, and Schumann – each, milestones in the history of composition – on this evening’s glorious programme.

Quatuor Mosaïques

Chicoutimi-based Alcan String Quartet has developed a well-earned reputation for excellence, both in Canada and abroad, since its founding 25 years ago. Alcan’s originality, contagious enthusiasm, unique sonority, and remarkable cohesion have all contributed to its immense popularity and success. Critics agree: both on stage and in the recording studio, this remarkable ensemble possesses qualities that characterize the best of its kind: a recognizable personality, a homogeneous sound, and elegant style.

A masterpiece of magic and whimsy, Debussy’s La boîte à joujoux (“The Toy Box”) is beautifully reimagined in this stunning work of puppetry by the legendary Salzburg Marionette Theatre. The brilliant American pianist Orion Weiss performs Debussy’s score live on stage alongside four puppeteers. For today’s performances only, Weiss will begin the program with Schumann’s character piece, Papillons, and the electrifying Piano Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22. We offer schools and families with small children a special afternoon performance of this enchanting theatrical experience.
