Take a cinematic adventure thru the ages
I
f you can’t travel to a tropical paradise, at least you can watch it on the big screen and imagine you are there. Like Tiki bars, Hollywood recreated an environment of the South Seas for the similar purpose of allowing the landlocked urbanite to escape the concrete jungle, if only for a couple hours. Visiting Polynesian supper clubs, Americans cast themselves in their own South Seas movies. The stories (Hurricane, Mutiny on the Bounty, South Pacific), the film sets (like bamboo huts and waterfalls, the special effects (like backdrops and dioramas), all enabled the creation of the environment of the Tiki Lounge. South Seas Cinema is a motion picture genre that is set on the tropical islands of the Pacific. More specifically the isles of Oceania (Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia), or using the “Hollywood” definition – any tropical Oceanic isle. Film Historian and South Seas Cinema chairman Matthew Locey shares his favorite movies from The Golden Age of Hollywood. Don’t miss Matt and other members of South Seas Cinema group speaking at Tiki Oasis throughout the weekend. Check the Symposium schedule and visit southseascinema.org From Tabu to Pagan Love Song to Blue Hawaii, cinema captured the perfect moment in time on an idyllic tropical island. This is what we call “South Seas Cinema.”

Surf rock and roll might be the most uniquely Southern Californian contribution to the musical lexicon, yet in it’s place of birth, there seem to be few bands interested in taking the challenge of living up to the exciting sonic legacy of the genre’s pioneers. Enter Bombón: Founded in San Pedro in 2009, the three ladies behind the band, Angela Ramos, Paloma Bañuelos, and Jerico Campbell, have been working hard ever since to deliver their gospel of old style surf rock blended with ‘60s garage rock and DIY punk rock attitude.

Throughout his career Kimo has had a deep appreciation for slide and steel guitar masters such as Elmore James, Duane Allman and Lowell George. Upon moving to Hawaii in the early 80’s, Kimo came under the spell of Hawaiian steel guitar master Sol Hoopii, a fixture in jazz and popular music of the 1920’s - 1940’s who continues to inspire generations of slide, steel and pedal steel. Kimo somehow manages to blend these two disparate influences into his island sounds.
King Kukulele is a comedian, actor and ukuleleist with inexorable energy who has performed around the world, singing hapa haole and novelty songs at all kinds of shows from Hollywood movie premieres to Disneyland. Here’s something special for your Tiki Oasis Sunday morning “lei over”. Par Avion, an eclectic instrumental trio featuring Bernard Yin, Rebecca Ramirez, and Derek O’Brien, taking off poolside at 11a.m. Sunday. Although now an LA resident; Bernard grew up in San Diego. Many years ago, he frequented Otto’s backyard tiki-themed parties in Venice when “tiki” was still a very underground affair. What we’re trying to say is that this is a homecoming on many levels! *Be on the lookout for special guest musicians or hit up the band if you care to join them for a surf session later in the day.
Passport to Paradise is a group created especially for Tiki Oasis, celebrating the music of Paul Page and the golden era of Hapa Haole. Featuring only the finest young men imported directly from Sweden, hand selected for sweet voices and charming smiles, this is one act you don’t want to miss! Expect crooning, swinging, and a healthy dollop of Swedish seafaring Aloha spirit!

An accomplished Lindy dancer, she founded Camp Hollywood in 1998 and it has grown into one of the world’s premier Swing dance events.
The Lampshades thelampshades.com
This clever dying lounge act with The Office Kate Flannery and Scot Robinson from Anchorman is original and smart. With musical mashups from the 70’s & 80’s that’ll have you rearranging songs in your head for at least a week. Two sad characters and lots of booze jokes. They work out the kinks of their amusingly tortured relationship on stage while doing the act.
Music + Mayhem The Loons
www.dirtywaterrecords.co.uk/loons
At Tiki Oasis, the Loons will do something special: an entire set of numbers by one of the UK’s most creative and iconic bands, the Pretty Things. When the Pretty Things first crashed onto the British scene in 1964, their wild, rebellious image, anarchic show, and crude rhythm & blues sound were an instant sensation. Over the years they evolved, making some of the most exciting rock & roll, and psychedelic records of the era—songs such as “Rosalyn,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” and “Midnight to Six Man.” The Loons will play selections from the Pretty Things’ 1964-68 catalogue, paying homage to the band that has inspired them above all.
The Satin Dollz
The Seeds
www.theseedsband.com
When legendary DJ Wolfman Jack played The Seeds on the late night airwaves the group graduated from the hip “underground” of the clubs of Hollywood to heavy national airplay. That raw, formidable sound, is even better and more powerful today with a new line up featuring founding member Daryl Hooper on keyboards and 60’s alumni Don Boomer (who replaced original drummer Rick Andridge in 1968) on drums. Rounding out the band is guitarist Jeff Prentice and Paul Kopf on vocals. They enlisted Grammy-nominated producer and archivist Alec Palao on bass.
The Surfbroads

The Satin Dollz entertain audiences with their big band sound, tight vocal harmonies, and showstopping tap dancing. Based in Hollywood, London and Paris, the Dollz have performed on BBC Radio singing with the UK’s No 1 Swing Band, The Jive Aces, and at London’s world renowned 100 Club. Jazz residencies have included Los Angeles’ famous Cicada Club with Dean Mora’s Swing Orchestra, the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach, and the Jazz Cave in St. Julien’s Bay, Malta.
Tucson-based Surfbroads is not so much a band as it is a visual and sonic experience. Imagine the classic twang and reverbdrenched sound of ‘60s surf rock. Now add some garagey rock n roll snarl and “Uma Theremin”—an illuminated, electronic instrument that lives inside a mannequin torso. Stir in some guitar, bass, drums and put it all to a collection of reimagined covers from rock icons like The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Bowie, and Slayer. What have you got? A sexy, surf’s up dance party hosted by none other than The Surfbroads.

Brought together by bowling and book clubs, these gal pals love clothing and accessories from the 1920s-60s but have a special place in their hearts for vintage Hawaiian clothing. Patti is silly for sarongs and ardent for Alfred Shaheen! Dottie is wild for Wailua’s watteau back dresses and tickled pink by teatimers! Caitlin is in a frenzy about fishtail hems and loony for Liberty House! From Dottie’s years of fashion study to Caitlin’s experience in the vintage clothing industry to Patti’s more than 200 pieces of vintage tiki fashion, these ladies have created a well researched study and review of tiki fashion and its many influences.

The current classification of rum as merely “Light,” “Gold” and “Dark” is completely erroneous, and provides no information regarding the actual production methods, territory, cultural/historical aspects or flavor characteristics of the spirit.
