Welcome to Re sort-O-Rama
We love creating events that bring people together, like our Tiki Oasis weekenders –it’s about finding a location and curating a weekend that is a fully immersive experience. For Resort-O-Rama, our focus was on creating a fun, informative, and dynamic conference focused on Mid-Century design, style and history. We have a lot lined up for you this weekend, from top-notch educational seminars, Supperclub dinner, tastings, curated art show, Mid-Century Modern marketplace, and a rare Northern California appearance by Charles Phoenix!
We have chosen the Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa, in the Sonoma Valley, aka “The Valley of the Moon,” because it retains its original 1950s vibe created by architect Homer A. Rissman. The Flamingo Resort also offers all
Table of Contents
the modern amenities you expect from today’s resorts: you can imbibe quality cocktails and devour Cal-Pacific cuisine at the Flamingo Lazeaway Club, followed by a workout at the gym, or a soothing spa treatment.
Resort-O-Rama is proud to benefit The Beat Museum in San Francisco. The Beat Museum is dedicated to spreading the spirit of the Beat Generation–tolerance, compassion, and having the courage to live your individual truth.
Enjoy stepping back in time to the MCM era for the weekend.
Thank You
Thank you to all those who contributed to make this inaugural Resort-O-Rama such a success including our featured artist Brandcamp; the whole Flamingo Resort Staff especially Christopher, Asa, and Nisha; Jennifer Knox Watson from HelmsBriscoe; Our Resort-O-Rama Crew, Chloe, Christi, David, Drew, Gabby, Greg, Jessica, Jim Giddings, Jim, Kira, Lori, Lulu, Lynn, Pilar, Rob, Ruthie, Sharla, Sonia, Tom and Vander. BAY AREA MODERNISM
BY HEATHER DAVIDMost people don’t think of the San Francisco Bay Area as a Mecca for Modernism. Truth is, one can craft their own mid-century modern tour in nearly every city by the Bay. Whether your preference is residential or commercial, roadside architecture or neon signage, notable examples abound.
Let’s take a day trip from San Francisco to Santa Rosa. Before crossing the Golden Gate, one might stop for coffee at the Round House Café (Vincent Raney, 1938), admire the toll plaza’s giant neon clock, and the gorgeous view. On the other side of the Bay, driving north on 101, perhaps a quick stop in Sausalito to see the Sausalito Yacht Club (Ted Boutmy, 1960) and an eye-popping nautical mosaic at the Bank of America (William Wurster, 1956). Delicious Italian food awaits you at Marin Joe’s (since 1954). Back on the road and it’s not long before you encounter the glorious Litchfield’s sign in San Rafael (1949) and the towering bowling pin of Country Club Lanes. For lovers of Eichler homes, a required detour is a drive
Bank of America Building
through the enclaves of Terra Linda and Lucas Valley. And one absolutely MUST stop at the world famous Marin Civic Center (Frank Lloyd Wright, completed in the 1960s). There is just nothing quite like it. Rolling down 101, you’ll pass the Harkleroad Round House (Sam Harkleroad 1963) and the dynamic roofline of the Birkenstock campus’ warehouse building (John S. Bolles & Assoc., c. 1963). You’ll pass breathtaking scenes of rolling hills and the edges of the bay before driving into beautiful Santa Rosa, a city with its own inventory of sites to see, including the fabulous Flamingo Resort.
