The west coast welcomes you!
California has always cast a magnetic spell upon travelers drawn to America’s sunny vacation playground, where the sun meets the sea.
There are plenty of westerly attractions to capture the imagination of visitors, from gold mines to beach sunsets to drive-through trees to Hollywood star sightings, but during the 1930s - 1960s, a new kind of California Gold Rush occurred: visitors steered west in search of liquid gold — Zombies and Mai Tais! After World War II, the Tiki craze took America by storm, and California was the epicenter. With the opening of Don the Beachcomber in the south and Trader Vic’s in the north, California was steeped in South Pacific romanticism and ripe for a Tiki tidal wave to hit popular culture.
Concurrently, as mainstream attractions such as Disneyland steadily drew tourists, West Coast subculture began to explode with the sudden popularity of pop phenomena: hot rods, theme parks, roadside vernacular, Googie and novelty architecture, the Beat Generation, and the rise of surf culture, as well as music movements such as West Coast Jazz, Exotica, Western Swing, and the Bakersfield sound.
Eureka! You have found it — Welcome to California.

John R. Mock: A Remembrance
By Martin S. Lindsay
Master San Diego architect John R. Mock passed away on February 5, 2024, just one week shy of 90. He is best known to Tiki Oasis attendees today for the Timken Museum, his love of all things Hawaiian, and his midcentury Polynesian works: the Hanalei and the Town & Country Hotels. His designs not only shaped the local San Diego architectural landscape but also influenced the Tiki community, leaving a lasting impact. But he designed many other residences, businesses, and churches here, and in Hawaii.
John Reginald Mock was born in Detroit in 1934. He graduated with his Bachelor’s in Architectural Engineering from the University of Detroit in 1957. He and his wife Peggy moved to San Diego, and John interviewed with three of the largest firms — Paderewski, Mitchell and Dean, Richard George Wheeler, and Frank Hope & Associates (1958-1963) — all on the same day! Frank Hope paid his architects $4.75 an hour. Mock gained on-the-job experience working for Hope in a small office in the attic of an old Victorian building next to the Travelator Hotel. There, he designed the Timken Museum, among other projects.
After five years, he co-founded Hendrick, Mock & Tipple (1963-1964). The firm was renamed after partner Bill Tipple left to Hendrick & Mock Architects (1964-1994). They worked with the Atlas Hotel group for remodels and updates to their San Diego properties for years.
John Mock’s most notable works include the Hindman Residence (1961), the Timken Museum of Art (1962), Hanalei Hotel and Islands Restaurant (1964-1981), Mission Bay Hilton Hotel (1967-69), Town and Country Hotel (1968), as well as the Mock Residence (1969), and Ullman Residence (1964).
John’s work was widely recognized and received numerous design awards, including the Mister Masonry 1974 Golden Trowel Award.
John Mock was a man of great talent, humor, and integrity who will be deeply missed by all Tiki aficionados who knew him. John’s architectural legacy will always be remembered for his outstanding Mid-century and Polynesian works. So much so, in keeping with his love of Hawaiiana, Aloha wear was required at his celebration of life.
Mahalo for all you created for us, John. Aloha ‘Oe!

The Untamed Youth
The Untamed Youth emerged in Missouri in 1987 — a group of bored teenagers who formed a 1960s-style surf and garage combo. Soon, they were touring and recording for Norton Records. Over the decades, they toured the world, made albums, and lived long enough to not be ‘Youth’ anymore! But they’re still the lovable, beer-swigging numbskulls they were when they started! The current lineup includes Deke Dickerson, Steve Mace, Steve “Sammy” Rager, and Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague. tinyurl.com/theuntamedyouth

family acquired the right to develop land on the other side of Mission Bay for the Catamaran in 1958. Initially built by the Scripps family as a SpanishColonial summer estate, the compound was rebuilt in a Hawaiian Colonial style to better complement its tropical grounds. The Evans family imported traditional Pacific Island art to decorate the
facility, including spears, personal jewelry, hand-woven rugs, and warrior shields from New Guinea. A monumental Tapa cloth made of Mulberry bark is proudly displayed above the black koa wood front desk. The tapa cloth is from the New Hebrides Islands, located off the coast of New Guinea. When it was commissioned, it was the largest tapa created since 1920 and took many island families over a year to make.
Following several expansions, the resort now boasts 310 rooms, the South Pacific-inspired full service Catamaran Spa, and a fitness center overlooking Mission Bay.

Great weather, Googie Coffee Shops, and LA’s roadside vernacular inspired a new kind of city where there was far more than one center.
