Welcome to Tiki Oasis!

It has been a long time since we have been together and we’ve missed you! First of all, we want to thank the entire Tiki community for your support and encouragement over the last year. As a familyrun event we were deeply impacted by the shut downs over the last 12 months, but the strength and spirit of the community encouraged us to keep dreaming and planning for future endeavours. So even though we were unable to host any in-person events in 2020 we are proud to receive a lot of accolades for the dozens of virtual events we hosted including educational seminars, international DJs, cocktail mixologists, dance parties and even a costume contest! We are inspired by your positive feedback on the programming we created and are happy to report that we will continue presenting monthly virtual events throughout the year with our Diversity & Inclusion Council. We look forward to continuing to spotlight marginalized members of our community and build awareness and knowledge so that our Tiki Oasis Family will flourish for future Tiki fans to enjoy. That was our long winded way of saying Welcome Back to in-person events! We are happy you are here joining us for Arizona Tiki Oasis at the historic Hotel Valley Ho. We have designed many experiences for you to enjoy this weekend including live music, seminars, disc jockeys, pool lounging, tropical cocktails, a marketplace filled with artists, traders and tinkerers, and more! It is a bit overwhelming to be back together again so remember to pace yourself and appreciate all the moments this weekend has to offer. Thanks again for joining us, Otto & Baby Doe von Stroheim, Tiki Oasis

E D u c at o r s

Jason Smith

Jason T. Smith visited his first Tiki bar at 4½ but didn’t really fall in love with Tiki until he was 30. His day job is professional thrifter so in making up for lost time, he has built an entire Tiki museum inside of his house from all the Tiki/Polynesian/ Hawaiian gems he has found while thrifting. facebook.com/JasonsTikiAdventures

Marshall Shore

Marshall Shore, a.k.a. Arizona’s Hip Historian, is a librarian turned hipstorian. When moving to Arizona 21 years ago, he often heard the cry “there is no history here,” but that was simply not true. Following his passion for uncovering the weird, the wonderful, and the obscure treasures from our past, Shore celebrates those semi-forgotten people, places, and events that have made us who we are today. He has developed an almost cult-like following for sharing history through trivia, tours, and lectures. marshallshore.com

Mike Skinner

Mike Skinner lives in Denver, Colorado where he is a civil engineer, but his passion is researching and sharing Polynesian Pop culture stories. He is a Tiki Oasis veteran having presented popular symposiums including SeaWorld, San Diego’s 1964 Exotic Masterpiece, Waltah Clarke and the World of Aloha Fashion, and the story of AHOY! Exploring Mid-Century Nautical Tiki. tikiarchitecture.blogspot.com

Together Conrad and Leitz run a group called Ukulele AZ, which is an online resource for ukulele events throughout Arizona. facebook.com/groups/UkuleleAZ

E D u c at o r s Sven Kirsten

It was his love for visuals that inspired Sven to collect and photograph the remnants of the forgotten culture of Polynesian pop in America, leading him to identify the Tiki as its icon. As a hunter and gatherer of lost artifacts and ephemera of this phenomenon, he began to see the pattern of a unique art form, publishing his findings in The Book of Tiki in September 2000. For the first time, the book presented all the aspects of Tiki style – its design, graphics, architecture, social culture, and cocktail mixology. The book put Tiki firmly on the map of American pop culture and is regarded as the standard work on the style. In 2007, Sven followed suit with his second book, Tiki Modern, then with Tiki Pop in 2014, and The Art of Tiki in 2017. facebook.com/sven.kirsten.39

LEETEG. BABES, BARS, BEACHES AND BLACK VELVET ART WITH CJ COOK

CJ Cook shares a preview of his latest book about Edgar Leeteg. Throughout his life, shrewd promoter and creative genius Leeteg possessed many titles, astounding fans, and antagonizing critics. Considered the “American Gauguin,” the rakish ladies’ man originated the modern technique of oil painting on black velvet. He was a wealthy artist and legend in his lifetime, a goal few can achieve. Tourists visiting Tahiti would seek him out for his generosity of wine, women, and song on his Shangri-la-like estate called Villa Velour on his quiet isle. He was the father of black velvet art and the genesis of a genre continuing today with the Tiki and Polynesian pop art movement, nearly 70 years later. 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Location: Soho All Ages $15

Appreciation

It took a village to restart Arizona Tiki Oasis and two years later we want to thanks some of the people that encouraged us and helped us to get energized and inspired to relaunch the event. We couldn’t have done it without the support of the participants: staff, artists, disc jockeys, seminar educators, sponsors, marketplace crafters, artists and traders, mixologists volunteers, and of course the super supportive Hotel Valley Ho staff. Cheers to our featured local artist, local Jon Arvizu, and are longtime friend and collaborator world renown artist Shag. Special thanks to Janek at Bauer Pottery, Tiki AZ moderators Ross, Leigh, and James; Trey from Surfside IV; Dana from Hula’s Modern and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. We especially want to thank the Arizona Preservation Foundation for their ongoing support and shared values of Architecural Preservation. Lastly we give gratitude to our sons Vander and Dashiell for inspiring us to keep creating and producing events.

Otto & Baby Doe von Stroheim, Tiki Oasis Producers

And a big high five to our staff
