Arizona Tiki Oasis 2019 Program

PROGRAM a SCHEDULE Benefiting Arizona Preservation Foundation

Greetings from Sunny Scottsdale!

We are happy to bring the spirit of the Tiki scene to the historic Hotel Valley Ho in Arizona. What a perfect pairing to have the first ever Tiki festival Tiki Oasis, and the fully preserved 1956 Modernism landmark Hotel Valley Ho together. Hotel Valley Ho is considered “one of the best-preserved Midcentury hotels in the country,”1 Tiki Oasis was founded on a mission of preservation. When we started Tiki Oasis in Palm Springs in 2001 we intended to save the Tropics hotel. And we did! The Caliente Tropics exists today mostly in its original state and in a state of upgraded grandeur that ensures it will remain a fixture of the Tiki landscape for future Polynesiacs. Now we are excited to bring the fun and finesse of the Tiki Oasis festival to ‘the West’s Most Western Town.’ Arizona Tiki Oasis will celebrate Phoenix’ rich Tiki history and add to the current revival happening around town. When conceiving the Arizona Tiki Oasis event we planned to bring the founders of Polynesian Pop to town to meet the AZ Tiki community locals. We asked our friends who were instrumental in resurgence of Polynesian Pop if they would join us for the event and they all agreed! C’mon on down and meet Shag, Sven Kirsten, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, Bosko, Brother Cleve of Combustible Edison, Crazy Al, and Andy Cruz of House Industries. At Arizona Tiki Oasis we have placed the emphasis on learning, participating and choosing your own unique experience. During the day you can explore the wares at the vendor marketplace, take a Modernism architecture tour, or sit-in on dozens of educational seminars. At night enjoy intimate cocktail parties where engaging conversation is the main attraction. Hang out on the veranda overlooking the lawn or take a stroll around the grounds and visit a cocktail party on the roof overlooking majestic mountains; a nightclub with unexpected entertainment; and a pool party with a mermaid, poolside bar, private cabanas and two jacuzzis. You will be entertained with live music while you dine or have dessert in the ZuZu Cocktail Lounge or step up to the Spa Deck balcony for exclusive tastings and poolside people watching. We’ve set the stage with an impressive location and invited the most prominent Tiki people but the real party begins with YOU! Thanks for joining us,

Otto & Baby Doe von Stroheim, Founders of Tiki Oasis

Educators

Sven Kirsten

It was his love for visuals that inspired Sven to collect and photograph the remnants of the forgotten culture of Polynesian pop in America, leading him to identify the Tiki as its icon. As a hunter and gatherer of lost artifacts and ephemera of this phenomenon, he began to see the pattern of a unique art form, publishing his findings in The Book of Tiki in September 2000. For the first time, the book presented all the aspects of Tiki style – its design, graphics, architecture, social culture, and cocktail mixology. The book put Tiki firmly on the map of American pop culture and is regarded as the standard work on the style. In 2007, Sven followed suit with his second book, Tiki Modern, then with Tiki Pop in 2014, and The Art of Tiki in 2017. facebook.com/sven.kirsten.39

CREATE A WORLD OF TIKI IN YOUR HOME WITH PAM KUEBER

In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl and five explorers set sail on The Pacific Ocean from Peru to Puka Puka on a balsa wood raft, launching a great adventure and a fascination of all things “tiki.” Translated into sixty-five languages, Kon-Tiki is a classic, inspiring tale of daring and courage—a magnificent saga of men against the sea. Read about their epic journey and come join the discussion of the classic book that captivated the world. Hosted by Karen Finlay.

Pam Kueber of Retro Renovation is ready to reveal all the secrets of creating a world of Tiki in your home. Starting with six blank walls – yes, the ceiling matters, too! – learn how professionals tackle the process of creating a tiki paradise so that you, too, can transform any room in your house into your own great escape. Based on interviews with top professional tiki bar designers, along with countless hours of research to transform her living room & dining room into her own “Mahalo Lounge”, Pam has distilled this creative project into nine distinct steps. You’ll hear about tikitheory essentials, design concepts, options for materials and where to get them, the big nono’s, and more. Creating a home tiki bar can be an intimidating project – “more is more” here, but you can do it, if you take it step-by-step!

FILM: BOSKO AND THE REBIRTH OF TIKI, WITH BOSKO HRNJAK AND SPECIAL GUESTS

The film follows Bosko through his childhood in Los Angeles, education at Art Center College of Design and his unsung, pioneering work as the first individual to revive the lost art of carving Tikis, sculpting Tiki ceramics, building the first proper home Tiki bar and more. Much of what Polynesian Pop devotees take for granted today began with Hrnjak 30 years ago. Even the many who know his work have not yet heard his story. The film is directed by Kurt Mattila (Stuntman, and Peter Gabriel’s The Veil), produced by Rob Wilson (Oliver Stone’s The Putin Interviews and Jim Jarmusch’s Gimme Danger). Based on extensive interviews with Hrnjak and his wife and collaborator Truus De Groot, it contains further commentary from fellow Polynesian Pop luminaries, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Sven Kirsten. Following the film there will be a Q&A hosted by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Location: SoHo All Ages $15

See Ed “BIG DADDY” Roth Rat Fink t-shirts mutate into blockbuster movie titles and luxury brand messaging. Seminars SUNDAY APPLYING THE P.U.N.C.H. TO MOCKTAIL

Sure, we all know what makes a great punch. It’s five components. Dating back to the seventeenth century, a simple ratio was created to make a punch. Something strong, something sweet, something sour, something weak. This traditional method can apply to many things, cocktails of course… but what about the mocktail? In this seminar, you’ll learn how to take these ideas and plug it into any sort of beverage whether it be a cocktail or mocktail. Mocktails don’t have to be boring. Let’s give them some depth and complexity. At the end of the day, it’s just punch. Please Understand Nothing (bad) Can Happen.
