In 2019, Time Magazine called South Africa the ‘World’s Most Unequal Country’. Like many places around the world today, there are huge differences between the way people in some parts of the country live compared with others. The access they have to food and fresh water, the types of houses in which they live, their levels of education, access to health care and levels of employment vary enormously across the country. Geographers are interested in measuring these variations and exploring the reasons why they exist. Studying the links between these factors gives geographers an idea of the level of wellbeing in different populations. Human wellbeing is an overall measure of the ability of human beings to access the things they need to live happy and healthy lives.
