Celebrating Black History

February is Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. It is an annual observance in the United States and Canada that celebrates the achievements and contributions of black individuals. First recognized in February of 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February as "Negro History Week."

Over the years, the celebration expanded to an entire month, and in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month. "I call upon the public and the press to recognize the important contributions of black history in the history of the United States," he said.

But the history of Black History Month extends even further back. In 1915, black community leaders in Chicago held the first "Negro History Week" to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Organized by a group known as the "Committee of Ten," which included prominent figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Carter G. Woodson.

Since its inception, Black History Month has been a time to recognize and honor the countless black leaders and activists who have made significant contributions to society. "A people without the knowledge of their history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots," said Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican-born black nationalist leader.

As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to remember and recognize the struggles and triumphs of the black community. It is also a time to reflect on our progress and the work that still needs to be done toward racial equality.

Sincerely,

SUSAN GREELEY SELECTED AS SIGNATURE ARTIST for Coral Springs Festival of the Arts 2023

The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts is pleased to announce Susan Greeley as the 2023 Signature Artist. The winning entry, entitled “3 O’Clock on the Alley” portrays the Florida Everglades with pine flatwoods in the distance, surrounded by a colorful sawgrass marsh and an afternoon storm blowing in. Mrs. Greeley’s painting will be featured in the Festival’s advertisements and posters sold at the festival. She also earned a $500 stipend and a complimentary booth at the Festival where she will display and sell her artwork. This is Susan Greeley’s fourth win as a featured Signature Artist for the Festival, winning in 2018 with “Everything Under the Sun”, again in 2019 with “Nature Calls” and most recently last year with “Bathed in Sunlight”.

Entries were submitted from artists across Broward and Palm Beach counties and chosen by a blind committee. Pieces are judged on how they represent the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts and artistic lifestyles with original voice, unique style, mastery of medium, technique and professionalism. “Obviously Mrs. Greeley has found the

winning combination of how to create the perfect piece of art to represent the Festival. Her work showcases the beauty of Coral Springs and embodies what the Festival stands for,” stated Shirley Richards, founder of the Festival.

Every year, the Annual Signature Artist Competition attracts dozens of submissions from two-dimensional artists and occasionally from sculptors as well.

Mrs. Greeley grew up in Columbus, Ohio, received a Bachelor in Art Education from Ohio State University and earned a Masters in Art Education from Florida Atlantic University. Greeley has taught K-12 Visual Art since 1981. During this time, she was able to develop her own style by experimenting with different media and themes. She enjoys working with watercolors, acrylics, oils, and mixed media and has a passion for capturing the essence of the busy city and the serenity of nature she encounters. “For me, the natural beauty and color in the landscape is the primary focus of my work,” stated Greeley.

▸ The 17th Annual Festival of the Arts at The Walk of Coral Springs will be held on March 18th & 19th. The Festival will feature a professional juried arts and crafts show with over 200 fine artisans and crafters and throughout the weekend, patrons will enjoy a wide variety of live music, dance exhibitions, theater, and literary performances, and a children’s area. In addition, CSFoA will host Gardenfest Coral Springs.

MSD Eagle Regiment Marches to Buckingham Palace

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's Eagle Regiment Marching Band Marched “across the pond” this New Year’s Eve. A little over a year ago, the marching band was invited to participate in London’s New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP). The honor is given to select bands from around the world and was a testament to the band's performance.

The parade is a far cry from the inaugural parade in 1987 with 2,000 performers. Today, LNYDP attracts over 10,000 participants from the USA, UK, Europe, and beyond to delight the Capital City’s street audience of over 500,000 and a global TV audience, which reaches more than 500 million.

The students that participated in the once-in-a-lifetime trip didn’t

just play and go home. They toured London’s myriad of historical attractions including The King’s official residence, Buckingham Palace, the ancient dungeons of the Tower of London and they took a ride on the World’s largest ferris wheel, The Eye of London.

Broward County Educators Celebrate Increase in Graduation Rates

The Florida Department of Education released graduation data for school systems across the state with positive news state-wide and in Broward County last month. 87.2% of Broward County Public Schools seniors graduated following the 2021-22 school year. This is a 1% increase versus pre-pandemic levels and was in line with the state-wide graduation rate of 87.3%.

“Florida’s graduation rate is a direct result of the determination of our students and the parents, school

counselors, teachers, and district leaders who worked hard to ensure the 2022 Senior Class was ready for their next opportunities in life,” said State Board of Education Member Monesia Brown.

“Today’s increase in graduation rate for Broward County Public Schools is something we are very happy about, very proud of,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartright , “this was the result of our staff being laser-focused on our students when they came back to brick and mortar instruction.”

All of the local public schools had 2021-22 Graduation rates above 90%, with Coral Springs Charter School leading the pack with a 99% graduation rate, followed by Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at 97.8%, Coral Springs High School at 94.8%, Coral Glades High School at 94.4% and J.P. Taravella High School at 91%.

MARGATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING OF NEW CLASSROOM BUILDING

The Margate Elementary School community gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the construction of a new building on the school’s campus. The ceremony kicked off with welcome messages from Principal Thomas Schroeder and Broward County School Board Member Nora Rupert, followed by a performance by the school’s chorus and remarks from Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Vickie L. Cartwright. School Board ViceChair Debbie Hixon, Margate Elementary staff, SMART Program team members, students and parents also attended the antici pated event.

“We are elated and excited that we broke ground on a brand new six-classroom addition for our preschool program,” Schroeder said. “We couldn’t be happier to continue phase two of the SMART construction that will add to the completion of our new art room and new music room as well as roofing improvements taking place throughout the school.”

The plans also include the addition of a new playground and renovations to several buildings on campus. As part of the SMART School Choice Enhancement Program (SCEP), schools are also allocated $100,000 to spend on customized enhancements selected by the school community. Margate Elementary already received its items, which consisted of bookcases, student computers and door entry upgrades.

There is now greater availability for students at all grade levels to utilize computer-based learning tools. “It’s not just an exciting day for Margate Elementary but for Margate the city and for Broward County in general,” Hixon said. “It adds to the construction projects we have in action in Broward County Public Schools

and moves us forward to the end of the SMART projects.”

The Broward County Public Schools

SMART Program is committed to enhancing Safety, Music and Art, Athletics, Renovations and Technology (SMART) at every school in the District. Margate Elementary joins nearly 200 SMART projects in active construction. This is the highest number of projects in active construction in the history of the SMART Program, which has invested about $1.4 billion in improving the quality of the BCPS educational experience. The SMART Program is currently projected to reach substantial completion by 2025. To learn more, visit bcpssmartfutures.com.

FULFILLING OUR PROMISE

February 14 marks five years since 17 innocent lives were taken at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Our hearts remain heavy as we remember the victims of the senseless tragedy and offer condolences to all who continue to grieve. Yet, while the pain will never fully heal, we find solace in knowing their legacies live on through meaningful reforms and action.

In the years since, young survivors, family members and community leaders have rallied together, working toward reforms and improvements to keep our schools and community safe. There have also been significant changes in the way public safety agencies operate, none more than the Broward Sheriff's Office. When I first took command of this organization in 2019, I made a commitment to prioritize school safety. As sheriff, I instituted a two-pronged approach focusing on threat mitigation and enhanced training and response protocols to ensure the failures from that tragic day would never happen again.

Public safety is our primary goal, including preventing incidents of mass casualty violence. Our BSO school resource officers continue to undergo comprehensive training annually. Prior to assignment, each SRO must complete a 40-hour state-mandated FDLE course, a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team training, and training for autism awareness, threat assessment and patrol-rife certification. Furthermore, all BSO SROs must participate in annual active assailant training as an additional requirement. In August 2022, SROs completed a full-scale active killer training to enhance their capabilities and knowledge to rapidly and effectively respond in the event of a school threat.

Additionally, we have expanded BSO's Threat Management Unit (TMU)

and Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Using cutting-edge technology combined with proactive policing, we can monitor and address threats in real-time. With access to nearly 18,000 school cameras across Broward County, the TMU has investigated approximately 1,600 potential violent incidents resulting in more than 220 arrests, including connecting 730 individuals with mental healthcare services.

While we've seen incredible results with these threat mitigation improvements, we will never become complacent and will continue to prepare for the next threat. As one of the nation's largest sheriff's offices, we strive to be the most prepared and best-equipped organization in the country. Focused on training, we have significantly expanded our Training Division and instituted more extensive, real-world course requirements for all our sworn personnel.

Our evolution is partly a product of BSO's new Department of Preparedness and Response. Established in June 2020, the department centralizes BSO training under one umbrella, resulting in superior training and service to Broward County. Today, our comprehensive training approach has made BSO a flagship training organization and has attracted public safety professionals locally and nationally.

Our progress continues as we prepare to open the doors to our new, onsite state-of-the-art training center later this year. The 103,000-squarefoot facility will match the agency's training needs, maximize staff capabilities and ensure a safe and effective training environment. The highlight of the facility will be the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Memorial Lobby. The names of the 17 lives lost on February 14, 2018, will be etched on the wall and serve as a daily reminder of the valued importance of training and preparedness.

With their memories close to our hearts, we will continue to work tirelessly to make our schools and community safer places to live, learn and grow.

February UPDATE

February 14, the day of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will always be a day that profoundly impacts our community. We will never forget the 17 whose lives were taken that day – Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Biegel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang. Each one of these people left behind grieving family members and friends. For those who lost loved ones, every day is difficult, and February 14th will be especially so.

In addition to those who were taken, we also acknowledge and remember the 17 people who were physically injured on February 14 and all those in our community and beyond who were traumatized by the tragedy. Everyone in our community on that day was somehow affected, and many of the emotions we felt on that day may resurface as we near the five-year mark. Support continues to be available to all in the community at Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center, located at 5655 Coral Ridge Drive in Coral Springs. You can contact them at 954-618-0350 or through their website at www. eagleshaven.org.

February is Black History Month and a time to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of African Americans and to recognize their important role in US History. History was made this past year when a statue of Mary McLeod Bethune was added in the US Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Bethune was the daughter of former slaves, an influential Black educator, and a civil and women’s rights leader. She also opened a boarding school for Black children in 1904, which later became Bethune-Cookman University. This month is also a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Broward’s history and to get to know more of Broward’s prominent historic Black leaders such as Dr. James F. Sistrunk, who was an early African American physician in Broward County and founded Provident Hospital with Dr. Von Delaney Mizell. You can find information on Black History Month events throughout Broward County Libraries at Broward.org/ Library.

PARKLAND UPDATE

his month marks the five-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. The families of the victims have shown our community their tremendous strength and how a horrible tragedy can lead to inspiring collaborative achievements.

Tremendous organizations and foundations have been created to memorialize the 17 victims of this tragedy. These organizations have awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants. They have effectuated positive changes on the federal, state, and local levels regarding laws and policies that will ensure safety for us all—in the hopes that a similar horrific event is not repeated.

Let us use their strength as an example of how we can all support one another and be stronger together. Far too often we ‘sweat the small stuff’ or take the simple things for granted. When, in reality, our daily life is a gift that so many would embrace.

TAs Mayor, I have the honor of serving on the board of the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation. The foundation is tasked with developing a memorial to honor those who were taken from us much too soon. The foundation board consists of one elected official from Parkland, one from Coral Springs, a resident from each City, a representative from the victims’ families, an Ad Hoc member, and is chaired by Mike Moser our Deputy Fire Chief. This 501(c)3 organization had been working towards this goal for several years and the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation has finally secured land for the project which is situated between both Coral Springs and Parkland.

We have put out a call for artists to secure a reputable entity to create a unique, appropriate memorial and to help develop this site. The goal is to create a place for our community to go and reflect, heal, and, above all, remember the 17. For more information on this organization, please visit www.parkland17.org.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the

Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park, we will hold the five-year Commemoration event to honor and remember the 17 victims. We hope the entire Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community will join us. We know the tragedy that took place here extends well beyond Parkland and we want everyone to know they are welcome. Every year this event provides a humbling reminder of those that were taken and how our community comes together to honor them and comfort one another.

If you would like to share your thoughts on the memorial committee, the Commemoration event, or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland. org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.
