Pink October: Honoring Resilience & Care
October heralds the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, the world witnesses unexpected bursts of pink, from high school footballers donning pink socks in tribute to their mother’s battles to colleagues sporting pink ribbons on their attire. The global movement for Breast Cancer Awareness has not only illuminated the challenges of breast cancer but also fueled immense strides in research funding.
The Our City Media family is no stranger to the shadows of breast cancer. Some of us have watched loved ones grapple with a diagnosis and eventually overcome it, while others have faced the pain of loss. Throughout these experiences, one constant remained: the relentless dedication of healthcare professionals. Their unwavering commitment to ensuring optimum health is truly commendable.
As highlighted by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, nearly 1 million Floridians have chosen the noble path of healthcare. This includes 83,000 doctors, 190,000 nurses, 66,000 EMTs, and Paramedics, alongside hundreds of thousands in support roles.
Over the past three years, these “front line” heroes have faced unparalleled demands, responding with grace and strength. This edition of Our City magazine celebrates some of these “Healthcare Heroes.” Dive into page 24 to discover the stories of individuals who continue to uplift our community. Their steadfast presence reassures us, especially in moments of need.
A heartfelt thank you to all the healthcare warriors from everyone here at Our City Media for guiding us towards healthier and brighter tomorrows!

Cleveland Clinic’s Coral Springs Family Health and Surgery Center Celebrates Five Years “Under the Sun”
It’s been five years since Cleveland Clinic in Florida opened the Coral Springs Family Health and Surgery Center at the southeast corner of North University Drive and the Sawgrass Expressway.
“Our goal in establishing the center was to bring highquality healthcare and world-class services closer to home for the residents in Coral Springs, north Broward and southern Palm Beach County,” says colorectal surgeon Juan Nogueras, MD, the center’s medical director. “We are doing just that every day we open our doors to patients.”
A Full Array of Services
The three-story, 73,000-square-foot facility provides a full range of healthcare services including specialty care, outpatient surgery, endoscopy and advanced imaging services.
“When the Coral Springs center opened in the summer of 2018, we had a team of physicians onsite representing
17 medical specialties,” says Dr. Nogueras. “We have since expanded to 25 specialties providing even greater access to care for area residents.”
Services include cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedic surgery, neurology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry, sports health, rehabilitation therapy, hand surgery, urology, gynecology and breast surgery, among many others.
With Cleveland Clinic’s Parkland medical office just two miles away, where patients can receive primary care services, residents of Coral Springs and Parkland have access to a full spectrum of Cleveland Clinic services right in their own backyard.
Modern Design, Innovative Technology
Cleveland Clinic’s Coral Springs Family Health and Surgery Center was designed to be a healing environment, with large, naturally lit waiting rooms and carefully curated art on the walls. It is both modern and easy-to-navigate.
The facility includes 40 exam rooms, 24 prep and recovery rooms, two endoscopy suites and four hi-tech operating rooms.
“Our ambulatory surgery center on the third floor has large operating rooms that are well equipped with state-of-the-art technology,” describes Dr. Nogueras, who performs outpatient colorectal surgeries at the location. “And we are supported by highly skilled surgical teams of nurses and technicians.”
Innovative technology and minimally invasive approaches have made it possible for an increasing number of surgical procedures to be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to go home the same day. At the Coral Springs center, these include robotic-assisted joint replacement, surgery for head, neck and throat cancers, and minimally invasive hernia repair and gall bladder removal, just to name a few.
The location also has a full-scale imaging center that offers digital and 3D mammograms, CT scans, 3T MRI, ultrasounds, general X-rays and fluoroscope imaging. “It is very convenient for our patients to obtain imaging and diagnostic services here in Coral Springs,” notes Dr. Nogueras.
Setting High Standards
“The high-quality care and broad array of services we offer in Coral Springs is similar to what our patients enjoy at our regional hospital in Weston,” says Dr. Nogueras. “In fact many of our surgical specialists perform procedures in both locations.”
Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital is the highest ranked hospital in South Florida, 2nd in the state, and 45th best in the nation, according to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2023 analysis.
“Cleveland Clinic is proud to be part of the Coral Springs community and to serve the needs of local residents,” says Dr. Nogueras. “We strive every day to provide the quality care our patients deserve.”

BAVARIAN BLISS IN CORAL SPRINGS: OKTOBERFEST'S LEGACY AND CELEBRATION
Celebrate Germanic heritage with authentic German fare and Bavarian treats. Coral Springs’ annual Oktoberfest celebration features the city’s twist on the traditional Bavarian celebration, with German beer & wine, traditional foods, authentic live entertainment, dancing, and activities for the entire family. The event will take place on October 14th at Coral Springs City Hall.
As with any traditional Oktoberfest there will be a beer garden serving up a variety of Bavarian beers and German wines. Adults 21+ are reminded to please drink responsibly. Music will be provided by The Swinging Bavarians with appearances by King Ludwig and Keg Tapping. There will be a host of activities for participants of all ages, including a kinder carnival area, lawn games and local food vendors.
Oktoberfest celebrations began on October 12, 1810 with the marriage celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I of Bavaria) to Princess Therese of Saxe-
Voted Best Asian Fusion Buffet
Hildburghausen. To celebrate their wedding, a large horse race was organized in the fields in front of the city gates. These fields were subsequently named Theresienwiese ("Therese's Meadow" or "Therese's Fields") in honor of the princess, and the fest held there became known as Oktoberfest.
By the end of the 19th century, large beer halls, backed by major Munich breweries, became the main attraction. These large tents, capable of holding thousands of patrons, became iconic elements of Oktoberfest.
Today Oktoberfest celebrations of varying scales occur worldwide, showing the global influence of Bavarian culture and the universal appeal of good beer, food, and merriment. The agenda of events include:
• 5:00 p.m. - Wiener Dog Dash Race (Registration coming soon!)
• 6:00 p.m. - Keg Tapping Ceremony
• 6:30 p.m. - Stein Race (21+)
• 6:45 p.m. - Yodeling

Emerging as a top choice from a staggering 129 applicants, Coral Springs was singled out for its unwavering dedication to urban sustainability, resilience, and inclusive practices. A highlight of the Cities Forward program is the collaboration between U.S. cities and their counterparts in Latin America or the Caribbean. On this exciting journey, the city will be paired with Freeport, Bahamas, fostering a space for mutual learning and sustainable innovation.
“Sustainability is a local and global endeavor, and our selection for this program out of hundreds of applicants is a testament to our innovative and collaborative approaches,” Coral Springs Sustainability Manager, Dr. Andrea Lemaitre said. “I look forward to

Bringing new life into this world and being able to assist someone in the journey to parenthood is incredibly rewarding. THE DONOWAY CENTER
Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.
With over 33 years of experience performing pancreatic surgerynin south Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has long been held to be the only reproducible therapy for a cure. In reality, surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.
Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.
Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in using pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past
decade, patients worldwide have traveled to benefit from this groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Donoway, which is FDAapproved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, ano-rectal and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA-approved guidelines.
Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation much sooner.
Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer. The treatment history has been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 12% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, we’re all confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”
Dr. Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/ IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging, and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eleven years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past without IRE, they would have lived a little over a year; so this technique opens a new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Dr. Donoway presented his results in pancreatic ablation and ablation margin status at the recent Specturm 2023 and the American Pancreatic Association meeting.
If you are being treated for advanced or oligo-metastatic pancreatic cancer, you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.

This year’s theme is “Mental Health is a universal human right.” We have many mental health resources available in Broward County. If you or someone you know needs help, the new crisis hotline number is 988. Additionally, in Broward, you can dial 211 or visit 211-Broward.org to connect with resources in the community. Eagles Haven (eagleshaven.org) also has free wellness programs and licensed clinicians. Tomorrow’s Rainbow (tomorrowsrainbow.org) provides free grief counseling, and the Children’s Bereavement Center (childbereavement.org) has free grief support groups. Every person has struggles with their mental and physical health sometime in their life. It’s important to acknowledge when we need help and to get the help we need.
I would also like to introduce you to our newest team member in our District 95 office, William Giliberti. William will serve as our Legislative Aide for District 95. WORKING FOR YOU
By State Representative Dan DaleyIt has been a privilege serving as one of your elected officials for the past 11 years. I firmly believe that one of the often overlooked, but most crucial responsibilities of any elected official is providing constituent services. Helping our constituents navigate the complexities of government has been one of the primary focuses of my office.
While the Legislature convenes for just 60 days a year, my office remains open year-round to assist you in resolving issues with state departments and agencies. Whether it's concerns about unemployment, Veterans’ Affairs, SNAP benefits, or matters involving the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, we're here to help.
If you're struggling to secure a driver's license appointment or need guidance on City, County, or Federal issues, we can connect you with the right contacts. Navigating government bureaucracy can be daunting, but we're here to help you cut through the red tape and find solutions.
I'd like to extend my gratitude to our City Media for providing me with the opportunity to communicate with you. This is our first chance to connect directly, and I want to offer my office's assistance.
You can reach out to me directly at Dan.Daley@myfloridahouse.gov or contact my District Aide, Kim Schnitzius, at kim. schnitzius@myfloridahouse.gov. For assistance from the District Office, please call 954-905-5503.
I eagerly anticipate hearing from you and being of service!
Best, Dan
Daley
PARKLAND UPDATE
By Mayor Rich WalkerIn today's world, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It allows us to stay connected, share our thoughts, and express ourselves. However, it's important to remember that the way we use social media can have a significant impact on ourselves and others.
We should always be mindful that behind every profile picture is a real person with feelings, experiences, and vulnerabilities. If we use kindness and respect as our guide, we are already setting the bar to treat others online as we would in person—with empathy and understanding. Words have the power to uplift or hurt, so we should choose them wisely and engage in thoughtful discussions, not personal attacks.
Authenticity is also key when it comes to social media. It's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of likes and validation, but it's more important to be true to yourself and share content that aligns with our values. We should embrace our uniqueness and encourage others to do the same. In addition, our digital footprint can never be fully erased. Employers, colleagues, or future acquaintances may come across your social media presence. So, think twice before posting something that could potentially harm your personal or professional reputation.
As we focus on upholding our true selves online, we also need to be mindful of the veracity of shared information and check the credibility of our sources before sharing news that could be misinformation. Misleading content can have far-reaching consequences, spreading confusion and distrust.
Another social media pitfall is the tendency to compare ourselves to others. Think of it as a highlight reel of people's lives, showcasing their achievements, vacations, and happy moments. What we see online is often a curated version of reality.
Setting time boundaries is important, too. Allocate specific time slots for social media usage and use that time to connect with loved ones, engage in meaningful conversations, and support positive causes. As we use social media, we need to uplift, inspire, and spread positivity, creating a virtual community that reflects the best of who we are.
Social media can be a powerful tool for communication, connection, and self-expression. By adhering to principles of kindness, respect, authenticity, and responsible sharing, we can make the most of this digital landscape.
And remember, with all of these social media outlets, there’s a real-world waiting for us beyond the screen.
▸ If you would like to share your thoughts on digital citizenship, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website, cityofparkland.org, and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.
