“My Mother is so happy that 2020 is over… but not for the reason you think.”
“She can’t wait to leave that big, lonely house and get to a warm and safe place, where she’s part of a community of neighbors like her, doing all the things she loves to do. We feel great about the luxury and comfort of the new Palace at Weston Senior Living. But right now what we love most is the careful, intelligent way they have set up their programs to meet or exceed every standard for health safety. We’ve talked to their team members, we’ve seen how they are trained, and our entire family has peace of mind with Mom living there. I tell all my friends who have older parents like me… go see the Palace at Weston.

The Northerners Coming, It Is Time for UsAre to Do Our Let’s Home! CivicWelcome Duty: GetThem Vaccinated
T
he Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941 began a chain of events that led to one of the greatest collective acts of selflessness the world has ever seen. Men left well-paying careers to join the army, even with the Great Depression fresh in their memories. Women abandoned traditional roles in the home to work in factories by the millions. The ideals of citizenship and prioritizing the betterment of society above personal goals is, in part, why we refer to those Americans as “the greatest generation” today. People, by the millions, did their duty, regardless of the impacts on themselves. It is time for our generation to do our duty. About 2 million people have died from coronavirus infection globally. The economic impact of the pandemic is measured in trillions of dollars. One only has to go to the grocery store or to pick up a meal at a local restaurant to understand the impacts on a personal level. People have lost jobs, older people are scared and many are or have been sick. But, there is finally good news: if we all do our duty for one another, much of these horrible impacts will soon be in our memories. We must all get vaccinated. The primary benefit of the COVID vaccine is the fact that it reduces a person’s likelihood to give it to someone else. If enough of us are vaccinated, the disease will stop spreading. Even if you are young, healthy, and unlikely to suffer any symptoms at all, you can still be an unknowing, unintentional spreader of a deadly disease to someone who could become very ill. This is our Pearl Harbor moment. It is time for each of us to do our duty in support of a greater cause. Get vaccinated. The life you save may not only be yours. Sincerely,
Terry & Christy Jaillet

Less Invasive Option for Valve Disease Treatment Offers Benefit with Fewer Risks Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common and serious conditions affecting the heart’s valves. It is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, which is the passage for oxygen-rich blood to leave the heart and go out into the body. When the valve opening is narrowed, the flow of this blood is blocked or reduced.
A multitude of studies have shown TAVR to be a safe and effective alternative to traditional valve replacement, offering patients minimal risk and discomfort, a shorter hospital stay (usually only one or two days vs. five to seven days with the open procedure) and a prompt recovery. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida
This condition is most common in people 65 or older, severely affecting nearly 500,000 people in the United States each year. It can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, congestive heart failure and, ultimately, death if left untreated. A revolutionary approach to treatment Replacing the diseased valve is the standard treatment for most patients with aortic stenosis. Until recently, however, the replacement had to be done through a surgical procedure in which the patient’s chest was opened in order to access the heart. In recent years, the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure has revolutionized treatment for aortic stenosis. It is minimally invasive, allowing the surgeon to replace the valve through a catheter placed in the femoral artery, which runs up the thigh, through the abdomen and to the heart.
“Aortic stenosis is a condition that offers a malignant course. As with open heart surgery, this procedure cures the condition,” says Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Head for Structural Heart Disease at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Tomsich Heart and Vascular Center in Weston. “Many centers offer TAVR, but our team has tremendous expertise and experience in this type of treatment.” Specialists at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Heart and Vascular Center have more than 10 years of experience with TAVR procedures, and the center performs among the highest volume of implants in the state of Florida. Their experience in TAVR and their expertise in structural heart disease translate to the best possible outcome for patients. To make an appointment with Dr. Cubeddu or another cardiovascular medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, please call 877.463.2010 or schedule online at ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Heart.

Learning is All Fun & Games at
Celia Taylor
R
Seminole Middle School By Beverly Perkins
eading, writing, and arithmetic used to be the top three subjects in classrooms. But times have certainly changed, and so have curriculums. The traditional trio now include science, technology, engineering, and art (STEM). How can educators handle such a workload while keeping the attention of their students? This question remains the main purpose of the annual Broward Education Foundation Innovative Teacher Idea Expo. A multitude of original curriculum ideas were showcased last month during the 24th annual event which looked a whole lot different this year. Entirely online for the first time ever, these unique projects developed by innovative Broward County Public Schools teachers, in an effort to better engage and motivate their students, were shared in the new virtual format. Attendees attended a variety of engaging and informative workshops and presentations and had an opportunity to win exciting raffle prizes. Each attendee received extensive course outlines, lesson plans, resource lists, student workshops, and tools to adapt each innovative project to their classroom. Teachers from Plantation, Davie, Hollywood, Weston, Coconut Creek, Hollywood, Margate, and every city in between brought their most innovative classroom projects to the online platform. One of these creative teachers was Celia Taylor from Plantation’s Seminole Middle School. There were no doubts, this dedicated educator certainly brought her “A” game. Taylor’s project, “Gamification in the Classroom” provides students with the motivation to complete tasks and reshape their own learning process. The project provided different games and different tools to use when gamifying lessons, units, and/ or a course. “One way to do this is by applying rewards to the learning process with virtual rewards (titles, badges, points) and creating levels of achievement. This encourages a student to participate and keep them coming back for more,” explained Taylor. “It also provides students the opportunity to fail and try again. Rather that they learn from their mistakes or they think of different ways to accomplish the task. It embraces failure and emphasizes practice. Also, it provides student choice of tasks they want to take part of. Gamification is crucial in the virtual classroom. Students need to feel that they are still a part of a classroom with peers and a teacher. These types of activities are used to motivate learners, review concepts, and create energy during the delivery of otherwise dry content. “Students must feel a sense of belonging and by gamifying the classroom it increases student engagement. Students can interact with the teacher and other students. They can compete amongst each other or themselves. Gamifying a class spices up lessons,” further explained the educational leader. The projected outcome is to provide teachers resources that they can incorporate gamification techniques within their own classrooms. Game-based learning has made a shift from teacher lectures to students participating in their own learning. Students can communicate, collaborate, and problem solve while learning a concept or a skill. It inspires learners to develop skills and build an emotional connection to learning and the subject matter. More than 35 creative educators received Broward Education Foundation Disseminator Grants enabling them to package their resourceful teaching strategies so they can be shared virtually with fellow educators.
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
DAVIE
Update A
By Mayor Judy Paul
t the town’s council meeting on December 2, 2020, the Town made a decision to reopen a limited number of playgrounds. This was based on existing staffing levels to ensure we could conduct both routine maintenance and meet the pandemic sanitation requirements. I requested that Mr. Lemack monitor the situation through the holidays. I was advised by the Town Administrator that our employees and contractual cleaning services staffing levels have improved and additional facility openings have been considered with the following protocols: • Each playground and restroom will be sanitized once per day with an electrostatic sprayer. • Park restrooms will be cleaned by the contracted cleaning company once per day and periodically checked by Town staff. • Sanitation scheduling may result in temporary closures of facilities while electrostatic spraying is completed. • Organized sports activities and spectators will be monitored at Bamford fields. At the January 6th meeting council supported this initiative and gave direction to Mr. Lemack to reopen all playgrounds, park restrooms and restart our sports programs effective Friday, January 8th, 2021, with the aforementioned direction. Being able to reopen facilities and start programs even while the pandemic rages will require the public’s assistance to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of facilities, wear facial coverings as required and socially distance. Should staffing become an issue again, the pandemic orders dictate otherwise, or violations of the required protocols be observed, we will have to close the facilities and programs again. The Town of Davie has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The award is for the preparation of the Town’s CAFR for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2019. This is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government. This marks the seventh consecutive year the Town has received this award. The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel that ensures the highest standards of the program are met and the certificate standards include the demonstration of a “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the Town’s financial story. The complete financial report can be viewed at www.davie-fl.gov. “This award demonstrates the Town’s assurance to the highest level of budget practices, financial transparency, and commitment to those we serve,” said Town Administrator Richard J. Lemack. “I am proud of our team for achieving the CAFR award for the seventh consecutive year, which is a continued testament to public service professionalism.” A formal presentation will be arranged at a future Town Council meeting.

MAKING HEADLINES OF HER OWN
T
wenty-three years ago, The Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF) was established to honor Dr. Alyce Culpepper after she retired from Broward County Public Schools. The purpose of CJF is to promote excellence in scholastic journalism just as the exemplary educator did in her classroom, while providing educational and financial assistance to high school underclassmen so they can attend summer journalism programs at universities. The 2020 Culpepper Journalism Foundation fellowship was awarded to South Plantation High senior, Grace Schwab. The ambitious student used her stipend to attend the University of North Carolina

Virtual Sports Journalism Camp because she was the Sports Editor of the Sword and Shield newspaper and an accomplished athlete for four years on both the school soccer and lacrosse teams. Because of the pandemic, most on-campus university journalism programs were cancelled or converted to virtual institutes. Under the leadership of Timothy Crothers, a professor in the UNC School of Journalism, the online format prepared Schwab for the new school year as students in Broward County went virtual for their classes. “I think the online format of the institute worked very well, and I was still able to learn a lot as if I was on campus at UNC,”
explained Schwab. “The only downfall was that I couldn’t make as strong a connection with the other students as I would have if we were all staying on the campus for those few days.” At the Journalism Camp, using Zoom, students interviewed a variety of subjects starting with a UNC basketball player and heard how the media affects a student athlete and how to approach a player after a loss. “Overall, the camp not only helped me become a better sportswriter but also taught me skills that I can take to any type of news,” exclaimed Schwab. “One point I definitely will share is that when you’re
are interviewing anyone, keep it conversational. Remember it is their story to tell, not yours.”

Foundation has awarded more than $42,000 to eighty-five students almost two dozen different public |high schools in Broward County. For applications and more information, please visit CulpepperJournalismFoundation.com

Anchors ‘Away’ ‘Tis the SEAson for Holiday Wishes

oast Guard Veteran and local author, Mark T. Holmes, had a large group of veterans on deck to wish Active-duty Coast Guard Units a happy holiday on Christmas Eve. He recruited these empathetic mates from
Mark T. Holmes
the Facebook group, “Coast Guard Buddies” since they understand what it is like to stand a lonely watch during the holiday season. “The loneliness of being away for Christmas was a bit overwhelming. I personally know what it’s like to be a watch stander on duty on Christmas Eve, having done so at several units during the period of my enlistment in the 1970s. It can be a very lonely time and as a group we want to let these men and women on duty know that we’re thinking of them. We know what it’s like to be always ready, even during the holidays,” explained Holmes.
Courageous photo leaving San Juan. by HM2 Davidowski, courtesy of Gary Pressnel
Just last year, Holmes came up with the idea to contact Coast Guard Units including cutters and shore stations nationwide. The response and reaction were so positive that the Cooper City resident wanted it to be larger in 2020. In 2019, he only had a handful of veterans make calls to approximately 40 units, but this year almost three dozen were up for the task as he arranged for them to contact over 100 units. “While a few units were not available (underway), we did get through to most of the units.
Those ‘Coasties’ on the receiving end were incredibly grateful that we had thought of them since we know exactly how it felt to be on duty Christmas Eve because we all had been in their shoes,” added Holmes. Coast Guard Veteran Chip Clough reported, “Both watches were very thankful that we would care to call. What a great idea and count me in for next year,” and his comments were echoed by Randy Schneider who said, “I’ll be planning this for an annual event. What a great idea.”

Providing for Minor Children
A
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
re you a parent with minor children? If you are, your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that you may not always be around. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Have you ever thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner, and to play with your grandchildren. But we see on a daily basis that life doesn’t always go as planned. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated. An important component of any parent’s estate plan is addressing issues regarding the upbringing of your children. What happens if both parents die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances, or guessing whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you want your heirs to receive their inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as their age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want instilled in your children. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. The Collaborative Process
THE TUG OF WAR ENDS
I
WHEN YOU ARE ON THE SAME SIDE
By Evan H. Baron, Esq.
t is the policy of this state to encourage the peaceful resolution of disputes and the early resolution of pending litigation through a voluntary settlement process” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or your friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues, by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation”. There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances, there are other “team members” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and therefore the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process, each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full, and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney”, there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. As in all matters of law, experience and training are always beneficial to a client. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process, please give my office a call.

Ankle Replacement By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS
ment for these conditions may involve medication, injections, activity modification, physical therapy, and bracing. When conservative treatment fails surgery may be considered. This involves fusing (locking the ankle permanently) or replacing it with an artificial joint as are done in the knee or hip joints. The procedure is referred to as total ankle arthroplasty or total ankle replacement. There are several ankle replacement systems available to the surgeon. Some total ankle replacement systems require more bone removal in order to obtain the desired result, others are referred to as resurfacing systems which remove less bone and essentially replace the surfaces of the joint. Certain ankle replacement systems are used for revision
A
nkle arthritis involves the loss of cartilage which decreases joint function and ultimately results in pain, stiffness, swelling, and warmth. As the cartilage wears the bones in the ankle joint grind on each other. There are several types of arthritis in the ankle. The most common types are osteoarthritis, a condition which is often a result of previous trauma to the ankle or leg and rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune disease resulting in inflammation of the joint lining and in advanced stages will lead to cartilage, bone, ligament, tendon, and muscle damage. Conservative treat-
surgery. Today’s total ankle replacements are essentially anatomic and provide the patient with the ability to reproduce the natural movement of the ankle joint. One of the most advanced systems utilizes the Prophecy technique developed by Wright Medical. The Prophecy technique allows precise implantation of the device by using specialized CT
scan imaging before surgery. Bioengineers will subsequently map out a customized plan for the individual patient which enhances the success of the operation. The alignment of the ankle is crucial as a neutral (straight) ankle will perform the best in the long term, otherwise, ancillary procedures are required to straighten the ankle and foot.

The specific ankle replacement will depend on the patient’s age, level of disease, and level of activity. The success of an ankle replacement is influenced by the condition and quality of the bone, the type and severity of arthritis, the condition of the muscles and tendons around the ankle, ankle alignment the weight, age, overall health of the patient, and finally the patient’s commitment to physical therapy and rehabilitation. The success rate is very good with modern ankle replacements oftentimes lasting from 12-18 years. Studies show that patients preferred the outcome of ankle replacement over the fusion which bonds the joint in one position to eliminate all movement. However, like all surgery, there are potential complications. These may include infection, scarring, nerve damage, and loosening or wearing of the implant.
Postoperative recovery generally requires four to six weeks in a short leg cast or fracture boot with physical therapy starting thereafter. The postoperative period is an added advantage over fusion which in contrast requires several months of immobilization in a cast.
