Spring Returns Making Old New Again
As we enter the fourth month of the year, we can feel the energy of new beginnings and fresh starts that come with the arrival of spring.
The start of spring represents a time of renewal, growth, and rejuvenation. The sun shines brighter, the flowers bloom, and the air feels lighter. It is a time to let go of the old and embrace the new, to take a deep breath and start afresh.
As poet and writer, Rainer Maria Rilke once said, "And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been." This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of spring - a time for new experiences, new beginnings, and new possibilities.
As publishers, we believe that spring is the perfect time to start something new. Whether it's a new hobby, a new project, or a new goal, this season offers the perfect opportunity to turn over a new leaf and embark on a new adventure.
The coming of spring reminds us that summer is just around the corner. South Florida offers a plethora of summer activities for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this issue for a curated list of camp options for your kiddos!
We hope that this issue will motivate you to start something new and to embrace the beauty of the season. Let this be the month that you shed the old and welcome the new. After all, as Rilke reminds us, "spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems." Let us embrace the poetry of the season and revel in the joy of new beginnings.
Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Federal Income Tax Filing Deadline
Don’t forget to file your tax return (or request an extension). All United States taxpayers are required to file a return with the Internal Revenue Service that shows their income from last year. Did you know that the Federal income tax was first introduced in 1861 as a way to help pay for the Civil War? The original law was subsequently found to be unconstitutional and revoked. The Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reinstated the national income tax in 1913.

Nobody Sells Homes Like TERI ARBOGAST
By Terry Jaillet
Buying or selling a home can be a trying time for any family. Having the right Realtor by your side can make all the difference. And, having an entire team working for you can make selling a home a dream come true.
Teri Arbogast has been helping people buy and sell homes in Broward County for more than 20 years. Teri and her team take pride in making every real estate experience a pleasant and profitable one.
The Teri Arbogast Team is ranked a top team in the Keller Williams office, and given their client-first approach and old-fashioned work ethic, it’s no wonder.
With over $109 million sold in Davie alone, Teri has the experience and knowledge to sell your Davie home for top dollar.
We sat down with Teri to learn more about what makes her so successful. Do you specialize in any particular market?
My team and I help our clients buy and sell homes throughout Broward County. We do, however, specialize in single family and luxury properties in Cooper City and Davie.
Describe your team.
Our team has been together for more than ten years. Our success is based on the golden rule: we treat others the way we wish to be treated, and that philosophy has served us well. Our clients can always count on us to do our best.
We listen, return calls promptly, and work diligently from start to finish to help clients realize their goals. We have completed hundreds of sales in Broward County and are familiar with many subdivisions, along with the amenities that Broward County has to offer its residents.
What types of people do you work with?
We serve all types of clients. I love working with all kinds of people, from first-time home buyers to high-end luxury home sellers. About 50% of my business comes from past clients and referrals. The other 50% comes from my aggressive
marketing campaigns, using the Internet, magazines, postcard mailings, and more.
Tell us the keys to your success.
I was born in the Midwest, where I learned the value of good old fashioned hard work. I also learned the importance of honesty, integrity, and loyalty. I am willing to take a risk and put my money where my mouth is.
Putting together a strong marketing campaign for each sale is more important today than ever. The key to getting top dollar is to price the house well and to make sure it shows well.
I have the necessary skills, experience, and knowledge to analyze the market correctly to find the proper value of a home. We formulate marketing plans to target the right type of buyer for each home we list.
I have earned the reputation as an agent that treats her clients like family. I believe in the golden rule and “treat others the way that you wish to be treated.”
How is Keller Williams Realty different?
Keller Williams is a leader in National and International marketing. The firm promotes its agents and our listings across the globe. We use a “team approach,” which allows me to build my business. Keller Williams also offers agents extensive education and marketing programs.
What is most important for home buyers?
I believe in educating my clients and maintaining an open line of communication. My team and I are very accessible to buyers and willing to spend time answering their questions. All of my clients receive quarterly magazines and emails to keep them informed of the latest real estate news.
Tell us about the free evaluation you offer.
I offer potential clients a free “opinion of value” delivered to a homeowner’s email within one day of the request.

Cooper City Celebrates Founders Day
On Saturday, March 11, Cooper City observed its 64th annual Founder’s Day with a day brimming with excitement. The weather was perfect, and the festivities began with a one-mile fun run/walk, followed by a pancake breakfast served by Boy Scout Troop 118.
As the day progressed and the temperature rose, the residents hit the streets once again for the Founder’s Day Parade. The parade was a hit, with little ones scurrying to collect candy from the participants. After the parade, the celebration moved to Brian Piccolo County Park, with food booths, performances, arts and crafts, and numerous children’s activities.
The day ended on a high note with a remarkable concert featuring the James Jeffrey Harris Gang, and a spectacular fireworks show that left everyone smiling. The anticipation for next year's event has already begun!
Experience outweighs uncertainty.
Advice Matters.
With recent events, an emphasis on managing risk is even more important as investors look for informed strategies to help them protect their wealth. At
we have the experience, knowledge and resources to help you manage risk, to recognize how it could affect your portfolio, and to work toward minimizing its impact.

The 2023 Long Key Nature Photo Contest is Here!
At 164.8 acres, Long Key is one of the largest natural areas managed by Broward County Parks and Recreation. As recently as a century ago, this elevated oak hammock was part of a series of islands surrounded by Everglades marshes. Long Key encompasses some of the most significant archaeological, historical, and ecological resources in the county, as the area was inhabited by the ancient Tequestas and the more modern Seminoles. Traces of human settlement here go back 3,000 years.
In the 1900's, Long Key became a citrus grove, a dairy farm, then Pioneer City...an Old West theme park with its own railroad...and finally, the highly-popular Kapok Tree restaurant, which was known for its Imperial Roman motif amidst spectacular landscaping. In 1990, following the closing and demolition of the Kapok Tree, Broward County acquired the land and began returning much of it to its natural state by restoring wetlands and transplanting non-native trees to other parks.
The Long Key Nature Center was completed in 2008 and today boasts a Visitor's Center which includes a scale model of the site, a 2,760 square-foot rental facility called Oak Hammock Hall, which is great for meetings, weddings, receptions, and other special events, an Exhibit Hall highlighting the history of the Tequesta and Seminole Native Americans on Long Key and the Everglades Theater
which shows a 12 minute video, Long Key: An Island in the Everglades.
Each year, photographers show their talents and win cash prizes by participating in the 2nd Annual Photo Contest sponsored by Friends of Long Key (FOLK), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to preserving the natural history of the heavily forested park and educating the community about it, hosts a Nature photo contest.
The photo competition is open to nature photographers of all ages. Some of the contest details include:
The contest will provide cash awards for “Best in Show,” 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the categories of “Scenery,” “Botanical / Plants,” “Wildlife,” and “Butterflies / Moths / Insects / Arachnids.” There will also be prices in two youth category age groups (under 13 and 13-17). Cash award values range from $10 to $125. All entered pictures must be taken within the Long Key grounds. Entries of up to four images require a small entry fee donation and will only be accepted at the Nature Center.
Entries will be accepted at the Long Key Nature Center, on April 15th, 22nd, and 29th, from 10am to 2pm.

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Set to Raise Money to Fight Cancer
The local installment of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life will take place at Cypress Bay High School on Saturday, April 22, 2023. It is open to everyone in the community. Relay For Life is a movement that unites survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants in the belief that the future can be cancer-free. With 2.5 million participants worldwide, it is the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.
At Relay For Life events, individuals facing cancer are not alone. Each year, over 2,500 Relay events take place nationwide to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. These events offer special activities throughout the year, allowing survivors and caregivers to connect with others and access a strong support system.
No donation is too small. Each and every dollar counts. Donations help fund ground-
breaking cancer research, patient care programs, and can make a difference in communities like ours. With every donation, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives.
The "Broward Power" relay's fundraising goal for this year is $160,000. These funds are utilized to support cancer research, fund education programs, and provide services to cancer patients and their families.
The American Cancer Society's mission is more important than ever, as the needs of people facing cancer continue despite the ongoing crisis. Funds raised through Relay For Life help to sustain the Society's efforts in cancer research, providing a 24/7 helpline, and ensuring patients receive the care and support they need.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT AN ESTATE PLAN CONSULTATION
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
An estate plan consultation is your chance to meet a lawyer to discuss your goals and concerns for your family’s future. During that meeting, you may review your assets and who you wish would receive them upon your death. Your attorney will point out other issues frequently arising in estate planning, such as taxes and possible disagreements between beneficiaries. Any previous estate planning documents should be reviewed, and the lawyer can advise you on how to change or update them to make sure they still meet your needs and goals.
Estate planning is a very personal and highly customizable process, and there are many unique estate planning strategies depending on your needs. Every family is different, and a "one-size-fits-all" approach to estate planning is not appropriate. Some people may have unique assets, such as art collections or cryptocurrency, that require special planning considerations. Others may have specific family dynamics or charitable goals that need to be addressed in their estate plan, while others want to minimize tax liabilities.
Here are a few unique planning strategies that an experienced estate planning attorney may utilize.
▸ Incentive Trusts: These provide financial motivations to your heirs for achieving certain goals or milestones. This can be a useful estate planning tool to ensure that your children are financially responsible, educated or leading a healthy lifestyle.
▸ Pet Trusts - Some people set up a trust for their pets, with specific instructions for their care and well-being. This includes appointing a guardian for the pet, providing for food and medical care, and even specifying burial arrangements for the pet.
▸ Charitable Giving: Some individuals include charitable giving as part of their estate plan. A charitable remainder trust can also be used to donate assets to a charitable organization while still retaining an income stream from those assets during your lifetime.
▸ Legacy Planning and Ethical Wills: These involve creating a plan for passing down your values, beliefs, and traditions to future generations. It may include writing a family history, creating a time capsule, and passing down personal mementos and other sentimental items. They aren’t legally binding but can be a meaningful way to share your thoughts and feelings with your children.
▸ Business Succession Planning: If you own a business, it's essential to create a plan for what will happen to the business if you become incapacitated or after you pass away. This could mean choosing a successor or making a buy-sell agreement to make sure the change of ownership goes smoothly.
▸ Family Heirlooms: Family heirlooms and sentimental items can be passed down to future generations. (Of course, kids don’t value chinaware or figurines like previous generations!)
▸ Trusts for Special Needs Individuals: Trusts can be established to provide ongoing financial support for those with special needs without jeopardizing their eligibility for government benefits. These are just a few examples of the many unique and interesting estate planning strategies that are available. An experienced estate planning attorney can help you create a plan that meets your specific wishes, personal objectives and unique family dynamics.

Sixth Grade Students and Teachers at Pioneer Middle School Honored with Kids Character Award
The Cooper City Commission honored Mrs. Sandra Lopez-Gallardo, a sixth-grade Language Arts teacher at Pioneer Middle School along with her students, with the city’s Kids of Character Award on Feb. 14th.
Just prior to the holiday break, 11-year-old Lucia Eves suffered from stroke-like symptoms during class. At that moment, all 21 students knew exactly what to do during this emergency. Mrs. Lopez-Gallardo has a “best practice rule” for the classroom. All the students got up and left the classroom quickly until help arrived. This ensured the medical emergency did not end up on social media and ensured first responders were able to focus on the ailing student.
School administrator Veronica Garza, and ESE Specialist
Kimberly Prager were also honored for assisting Emergency Medical Technicians during the emergency. Thankfully, after a few days in the hospital, Lucia was back in the classroom with his friends and classmates.
Pioneer Middle School was established in 1976 and has a student population of around 1,400. The school first opened during the United States' bicentennial year and adopted red, white, and blue as its school colors, as well as the Eagles as its mascot in recognition of the nation’s 200th birthday. The school has been rated an "A" school by the Florida Department of Education for multiple years.
According to her Linkedin profile, Mrs. Lopez- Gallardo has been teaching at Broward County Public Schools since 2004. She earned a bachelor's

Ankle Ligament Injuries in Teenagers
& Adults
By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M.
The ankle is a complex joint consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and joint lining. The primary motion of the ankle is up and down. It has limited side-to-side motion. When excess motion occurs from side to side, ankle ligaments can tear.
Ligaments connect bones together. Once the ligaments are torn instability can develop. On the outside of the ankle there are three ligaments. The inside of the ankle has five and connecting the tibia and fibula are three more.
Ankle ligament injuries can occur from stepping off of a step and rolling the ankle, to playing sports and coming down and landing on somebody’s foot. It is also very common in women who wear heels and roll their ankle to the outside, causing damage to the ligament structure of the ankle.
When ligament injuries occur, it is most often
associated with a feeling of a crack or a pop, and is associated with pain, swelling, occasionally discoloration and inability to weightbear.
It is always best to evaluate these ankle injuries as soon as possible. A thorough history and physical will allow the doctor to identify the ligaments that have been injured and the extent of the injury. X-rays are taken and occasionally MRIs if the suspected damage is significant.
Treatment is then aimed at reducing the damage to the ligaments and giving the ligaments an opportunity to heal primarily. Treatment for these injuries could be as simple as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). For a very simple stretching injury to the ankle ligaments, an ankle brace is used most often. When the ligaments are torn, then immobilization is absolutely necessary. A boot or a cast is applied for two to six weeks. Patients are allowed to immediately weightbear. Cross training is completely allowed. Avoid any type of anti-inflammatory. This will help to reduce the inflammation but at the cost of allowing those ligaments to heal because inflammation is a critical part of the healing process. Physical
therapy may be necessary after cast removal. A return to sports could take four to eight weeks.
Chronic instability may develop if treatment has not been initiated immediately. This may be corrected with a ligament tightening procedure. Long-term prognosis is almost always excellent.

had the pleasure of addressing the Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce in March with my State of the Town address. Some of the comments include the following:
Davie is fiscally in its best shape, outpacing comparable municipalities and even larger, more developed communities. This we attribute to smart planning, being fiscally conservative, and the year-round nonstop work of our expert Budget and Finance team. We have a AAA bond rating from Standard and Poor’s rating agency and are one of only eight out of 410 chartered municipalities in Florida that have received this distinction.
Furthermore, our Budget and Finance Department has received the Distinguished Budget Award for 11 straight years and the Annual Financial Reporting Award for nine straight years. Our Procurement Division has received numerous National and State awards, including the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement from the National Procurement Institute.
On the economic front, businesses see Davie as desirable to invest in, and we are helping with recruitment and retention to focus on long-term success. The desire to help growing businesses propel forward is at the heart of our economic planning. We renewed our partnership with the Florida Atlantic University Small Business Development Center (SBDC). We have a series of business workshops planned throughout the year that are geared towards strengthening businesses – it doesn't matter what level your business is at –there will be tips on launching, growing, transitioning, and rebranding. The first event will take place on April 5.
Many people have voiced concern about the loss of nurseries and farmland in Davie. Unfortunately, we cannot control the right of an individual to sell their property for any reason. Many
DAVIE UPDATE
By Mayor Judy Paul
Inurseries have sold land to developers because of a strong market. To counter that, we have tried to save open space and expand our trail system to preserve green space and wildlife habitat.
The trail system acts as a habitat and enables wildlife to transverse the town and hopefully stay out of the roadways. We support agriculture through our community gardens at Robbins Lodge Park and encourage the preservation of our natural settings through the NatureScape and Wildlife Habitat programs sponsored by the County. We are a certified NatureScape and wildlife community. You can see all the borrowing owls on the Ridge along Nob Hill or at Owl Park off Flamingo Rd. and 26th St. We are also developing an 84-acre farm park to teach agriculture to residents and to provide green space for wildlife. A group of people, including elementary, middle, and high school students, participate in a new program at Robbins Lodge Park. This program is a series of learning opportunities that include when, where, and what to plant and guidance on the planting, care, and maintenance of various fruits and vegetables. These classes are held at 9:00 am on either Saturday or Sunday. Visit www.www.davie-fl.gov for more details.
I am pleased to announce the annual Mayor's Scholarship Fund, which recognizes students interested in pursuing careers in public service. This year, I will award two $500 scholarships to deserving graduating seniors living in the Town of Davie. Scholarship applications must be submitted by Friday, April 14th. Winners will be announced during the Town Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 3rd. For more information and submission guidelines, please visit www.davie-fl.gov.
The Town of Davie appreciates our local Veterans who have proudly served our great nation. The Moving Wall, a traveling half-sized replica of the Vietnam War Memorial, will visit Coral Springs from May 5th–7th. The Town of Davie will provide a shuttle service for Veterans and their families on Saturday, May 6th, and Sunday, May 7th, leaving from the Pine Island Multipurpose Center in Bamford Sports Complex/Pine Island Park.
Pre-registration for the shuttle service is required as seating is limited. Veterans who ride the shuttle will spend about an hour onsite at the Moving Wall. Ceremonies will also take place throughout the day. Specifics on sign up can be made through our Parks and Recreation Dept. For questions and inquiries, please call the Pine Island Multipurpose Center at (954) 327-3941.

UNEXPECTED CAVITIES
By Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman
Almost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six-month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities.
In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time).
The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity.
We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids.
As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages.
The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium.
Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats, but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating!

2023 Orange Blossom Festival & Parade Were a Hit!
Cowboy Town’s biggest event of the year was a huge hit! Thousands came from far and wide to celebrate The Town of Davie’s roots at this year’s Orange Blossom Festival and Parade. More than 200 floats, bands and groups participate in the parade, followed by three days of festivities at Bergeron Park. Music was on tap each day as participants dance the night away. There were also dozens of local vendors on site with home-made crafts and foods, a petting zoo, carnival rides and more.
The Orange Blossom Festival is a long-standing tradition in Davie. It is a celebration of the town's agricultural roots and heritage and is named after the orange groves that once dominated the area.
