Time for a Christmas Truce
D
ecember 24, 1914 was the date of one of the most improbable acts of collective goodwill and fellowship in history. German soldiers conspired with their British and French opponents to declare an informal ceasefire along the Western Front of World War One. After five months of the worst carrange in human history, rank and file soldiers declared what would later be called “The Christmas Truce.” The truce began when groups of soldiers sang Christmas Carols from their trenches. These carols were answered, in turn, by songs from the enemy. Soon, arrangements were made to recover bodies from the “no man’s land” between the opposing forces. This led to interactions between the forces, ending, believe it or not, with gift exchanges and even a soccer match. We often focus on the things that divide us in the modern world. Social media and political journalism highlight differences and frequently induce anger, jealousy, and rage. Next time you find yourself in a fit of anger or a divisive rant, think of the soldiers on the Western Front. Those poor souls, who’s life expectancies were measured in days, not years, found common ground with the very people who were trying to kill them. Maybe, this holiday season we can do the same. Happy Holidays!

“Reveal the LIFE Within” with
INSPIRE WEIGHT LOSS! By Beverly Perkins
I
nspire Weight Loss truly lives up to its name; The woman behind the brand is an inspiration. Having weight struggles for over 20 years and at the age of 40, finally gaining control and taking her life back, Martha Savloff now has the power and ability to help others achieve the same results. Unlike many others, Inspire Weight Loss prides itself on a natural, customized, and safe weight loss approach. Clients are taught how to incorporate certain types of foods into their diets (including anti-inflammatory ones) along with natural supplements to help curb the appetite, stimulate metabolism, and detoxify the body. Additionally, they provide continuous support from their team of health coaches during each phase of the program. Martha Savloff, Master Certified Health Coach (MCHC), Founder, and CEO of Inspire Weight Loss recently took some time to tell us more about her practice.
What sets Inspire Weight Loss apart from the multitude of other weight loss centers?
Besides our extremely effective weight loss program (with REAL food) and step-by-step coaching, I believe what sets us apart is the relationship, support, and guidance we give our clients. We offer authentic and compassionate care that makes our clients comfortable. They can relate to us because we all share our personal stories - the journeys, the struggles and tribulations, but most importantly, the results. We truly have a desire and interest in each client’s dream. In fact, we are their biggest cheerleader.
How did Inspire Weight Loss come about?
Four years ago, I was at a crossroads not only professionally, but physically, I wasn’t feeling great inside or outside. I knew I needed to make a change before it was too late. I had been struggling with my weight for over 20 years and I knew I had to take action to change my life. I finally committed to putting myself first. With a new mindset, I lost a good amount of weight in a short time, and I felt amazing. Having been in healthcare my whole career, I wanted to do something that would inspire not only myself but others, too. I fearfully went back to school and earned my Master Certification for Health Coaching and opened Inspire Weight loss three months later.
How does Inspire Weight Loss work?
Martha Savloff, Founder & CEO
We’ve created an “all-in-one” business model that not only offers our clients safe weight loss programming under the guidance of certified health coaches, but industry-leading non-invasive body contouring, and 3D body composition analysis technology too. Our goal is to
16 / Our City Davie / December 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
provide support rooted in compassion and understanding that will lead to smarter lifestyle choices for each client’s continued success long after they’ve completed their time with Inspire.
What is the average weight loss?
The average is half a pound to a pound a day.
Can you tell us more about body contouring?
At Inspire Weight Loss we offer body contouring for two reasons. First, we include body contouring with all our weight loss programs to help slim out diet and exercise-resistant fat, start the skin tightening process, reduce cellulite, and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles while the client is on their weight loss journey. Secondly, we have some clients who do not necessarily require a weight loss program but are dieting and exercising on
their own and have certain stubborn areas of fat that they cannot lose. We can target those specific areas and slim those out as well. Our body contouring is non-invasive; We do not freeze or massage the areas and there is no pain. It also serves as an anti-inflammatory.
Why wait for the new year? Let’s get started now! Anyone who mentions Our City Media will receive 15% off any weight loss or body contouring package. (Promo Code: OURCITY)
What else would you like to share with our readers?
Our hours vary, but we are open until 7:30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Please call 954-837-8811 to schedule an appointment. We are a multi-lingual office. Our staff speaks English, Spanish, and Hebrew.
We love our 5 stars reviews! Our clients are part of our family, and they have a whole team that is there every step of the way. Weight loss does not have to be painful; it can be a beautiful journey with the right program and support system. We are so excited about our mission that we are launching a franchise in 2022 to bring sustainable health and wellness across the United States.
What are your current hours of operation?

HCA Florida Opens
STATE-OF-THE-ART
HOSPITAL at NSU
T
By Terry Jaillet
here is a brand new hospital serving South Broward County. HCA Florida University Hospital officially began accepting patients on Monday, November 15. The state-of-the-art facility is located adjacent to the campus of Nova Southeastern University and represents one of HCA Healthcare’s largest investments in South Florida. The 300,000 square foot, the multi-specialty hospital is equipped with the latest technology and offers comprehensive healthcare services, including 24/7 emergency care, maternity services with a level III NICU, and a full range of robotic and minimally invasive surgical procedures. The facility replaces HCA’s Plantation General Hospital which is being closed. The emergency room at Plantation General, however, will remain open, serving residents north of 595. University Hospital was built with growth in mind. It will initially have 165 patient beds with the ability to expand to up to 600 beds. “We are excited to be able to drive healthcare with this impressive new facility,” said hospital President Madeline Nava, “Our approach is to individualize patient care. From the time a patient or family member arrives at our hospital, they will be greeted by a guest services coordinator who will help them find their way around. Exceptional patient experiences and worldclass care. That is our goal.” The proximity of the hospital to NSU’s two accredited medical schools is no accident. While neither HCA Florida nor NSU has publically released plans on working together, something is likely in the works. HCA Florida is the largest teaching hospital system in Florida, with more than 2,000 residents and fellows across 25 hospitals and the new hospital came complete with classrooms.

SCHOOL NEWS
Media Center Makeover By Beverly Perkins
C
ooper City Elementary School recently celebrated the grand opening of its newly renovated media center. Students, faculty, and staff were anxiously awaiting the unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony. School
Principal Monica Schlosser counted down before the official cut was made to celebrate the variety of stakeholders who all came together to make the day possible. “From construction to district personnel to our kids, everybody has a stake in our ribbon cutting and the renovation of the media center,” stated Principal Schlosser. “Through our voices within our district, we can facilitate these special projects, such as our media center renovation. It is the village that has come together for a common purpose, which is our children.” Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has allocated $1,177,238 toward primary renovation projects at Cooper City Elementary School which includes large projects such as this. Additional SMART projects on campus include improvements to the building envelope, fire alarm system, and HVAC.
“These are our SMART bond dollars at work and it’s thrilling to see the kids in here. This is the hub of every school. This is where the kids should be able to dive into books and lose themselves in another world and know what the value of reading is,” explained Laurie Rich Levinson, Vice-Chair, School Board of Broward County, District 6. Students’ faces lit up when they stepped inside their newly renovated media center which was completed with new furnishings and décor. “It’s amazing! It was fun before, but now it’s even more fun,” exclaimed student Lucas Tamsberg. “I was shocked,” asserted fellow student Emily Almonte. The makeover has reignited the teachers as well. “We now come into this room for professional
development, and it’s kind of forced us to kind of think like a kid,” said Connie Gwaltney, Cooper City Elementary Teacher of the Year. “We also find quiet places to come and read and get some of our work done. So, it’s a hub for us as well.” Donna P. Korn School Board of Broward County, Countywide At-Large, Greg Ross, Cooper City Mayor, and Howard Meltzer, City of Cooper City Commissioner, District 2 were also in attendance and proud to be a part of the celebration. “It’s just a beautiful thing to see children loving to learn and being comfortable doing it. I love it,” added Principal Schlosser.

CAN DO KIDS
Bit By Bit, Local Girl Scouts
Are Making a Difference
P
By Beverly Perkins
lantation Girl Scouts from Troop 10707 were eager to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award. The coveted award is one of the highest awards a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. To achieve the prestigious title, the cadettes must make a change for the better. The opportunity to do so allows scouts to show their leadership skills and make a difference in the world. Girls must first identify an issue they care about, and then decide if they want to do it solo or with a team before submitting a proposal to their local Council for approval. The service project must be educational, as well as sustainable after the project is completed. In the end, they must reflect, share, and celebrate it. A minimum of 50 hours is also required to earn the award. It gives girls the chance to explore, reach out, and take action to make their community a better place. Amid the pandemic last summer, Ashley Weiss told her mom that she would like to work on her Silver Award by helping a horse-related charity. So, the ambitious teen began her quest online to locate the perfect one. But unfortunately, she was disappointed to find out she was too young to volunteer. This year, the troop reached out again to Bit-By-Bit Therapeutic Riding Center founder Susan March to see how else they could assist at the center. Together they discovered the many ways their service would be valuable to the 501(C)(3) PATH Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center and an American Hippotherapy Association Registered Facility. Ashley then recruited her fellow Troop 10707 scouts Milana Silva and Sarah McKenzie, and they decided their Silver Award project should benefit the therapeutic riding center. Bit-By-Bit specializes in speech, occupational, and physical therapies for people with physical, neurological, emotional, and cognitive delays and or disorders with the help of specially trained horses. They also offer an adaptive riding program called “Horses for Heroes” free of charge to United States veterans with disabilities. When asked why she was passionate about this project, Ashley said, “Since I have a love of horses myself, seeing disabled people benefit from hippotherapy is inspiring and encouraging.” The girls began by refurbishing a few of the clients’ favorite Sensory Paddock stations and then offered to design and build one of their own. The new Fidget Station in the Sensory Paddock was their colorful creation. 30 / Our City Davie / December 2021
They enlisted local artist Libby Hodges to assist with her artistic touch. Additionally, they renovated and replanted a butterfly and an herb garden with the help of Horticulturalist Angie Carroll of Plantation and built and donated some much-needed storage space in the therapy classroom. Not only did the girls want to help BitBy-Bit physically, but they also wanted to bring awareness to alternative education and therapies like Hippotherapy on a social media platform. So, they started an Instagram campaign to show how important programs like the ones offered by Bit-By-Bit help people who require different ways of learning and how the Davie center provides a muchneeded service in the community. “I learned that if you try to do something, you can do it with a plan. We made plans for everything, and we got everything we planned done. Everything in the project took a few different ideas to make it work or took us building it and rebuilding it to make sure that we could make it as effective as possible. I also learned how I can make a bigger impact than I ever imagined as long as I try,” exclaimed Sarah. Although the scouting trio each put in over 50 hours to accomplish their goal and achieve their award, they are most proud of the impact they made in the community and the lessons they learned while creating their project. “The most successful aspect of this project was when we got to see people enjoying and learning through our new creations. We successfully spread awareness for positive education systems for people with disabilities,” added Milana.

ASK THE EXPERT
Ankle Arthritis By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS
M
ost people with ankle arthritis have a history of an injury. This would include a fracture, an acute sprain or series of sprains. Studies indicate that arthritic changes may develop anywhere from 10 to 34 years after an injury. Other causes include rheumatoid arthritis, genetic predisposition, and side effects related to oral and injectable medication such as steroids. The condition can result in significant pain and disability.
How is it treated? There are many solutions for ankle arthritis depending on the severity of the disease. Oral steroid or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (Alleve, Advil) may be used if needed with the understanding that these drugs are not innocuous and have side effects. Historically physicians will inject a combination of local anesthetic and steroid into the joint to break the pain cycle and provide long-lasting anti-inflammatory effects. Frequent injection of steroid has the potential to accelerate arthritis and must be used cautiously. Recent technology has provided safer and perhaps more beneficial options which appear to be promising for arthritis. In 2008, I coauthored an FDA approved pilot study in a well-known orthopedic journal which examined the success of an injectable compound called hyaluronic acid (Hyalgan) otherwise known as viscosupplementation in the ankle. The compound is derived from rooster combs and has anti-inflammatory effects while acting as a joint lubricant. We discovered that patients had improved symptoms based on the degree of arthritis but its effects unfortunately did not last as long as the knee. Other injectable options include PRP or platelet rich plasma and stem cell injections which have been shown to also provide considerable benefit -at least comparable to viscosupplementation. The treatment has recently gained traction in the science of tissue repair and is now becoming part of a practitioner’s standard practice. Nutritional supplements such as glucosamine chondroitin compounds have received favorable reviews from respected medical journals; one study indicated that their use directly after an acute injury accelerated cartilage healing. More advanced ankle arthritis may require the aid of bracing and shoe modifications although this may not be the desired treat32 / Our City Davie / December 2021
ment option for active patients or patients who are not candidates for surgery. Treatment for late-stage ankle arthritis has otherwise been traditionally attended to surgically with fusion where worn-out joint surfaces are removed and held together with metal implants to create a stiff and painless joint. Fusion (otherwise known as arthrodesis) has been proven to be very successful in relieving pain and is a permanent solution to painful advanced ankle arthritis. Its shortcomings include a tendency to develop arthritis in the adjacent joints of the foot but has a high satisfaction rate. Finally, total ankle replacement is a technique which replaces the ankle with an artificial joint and also has a high satisfaction rate. The purpose and benefits of a total ankle replacement is to relieve pain and regain most of the ankle’s normal function. By doing so it restores a near normal gait. It is not designed to withstand running or activities requiring impact. The ideal patient for a total ankle replacement is an individual who has little to no malalignment of the ankle, good pulses and sensation, and a near normal body mass index. Poorly controlled diabetics, patients with significant malalignment, sensory neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease are generally not good candidates. Ankle replacements have an average life span of 10-15 years at which time they may be revised or converted to a fusion.
Before and After Total Ankle Replacement Surgery
Likewise, a fusion in some instances may be converted to a total ankle replacement. Ankle arthritis continues to be a challenging condition for the foot and ankle specialist, yet we are very fortunate as recent technological advances have greatly improved our ability to successfully treat the condition.

CRABHOLIC
is a Shellfish Lovers Dream By Terry Jaillet
R
ecently opened Crab Holic Restaurant, located on the southwest corner of Griffin Road and University Drive is a shellfish lovers paradise. If you love cracking open a crab leg or pulling the meat out of a freshly boiled lobster claw there is no better place to dine in South Florida.

For our main course, our table of four sampled two of Crab Holic’s signature buckets. Each bucket contains a combination of freshly steamed shellfish that is smothered in a sauce of your choice and then sealed in a steam-filled bag as it is brought to your table. The incredible aroma formed when opening the bag is truly a feast for the senses! We loved “The Royal” bucket, which included almost three pounds of fresh King Family Dining Crab legs, Dungeness crab legs, snow crab You are welcomed into a bright, open legs and shrimp, along with corn-on-the-cob, dining space as soon as you walk into the potatoes, and tangy sausages. Starters
We chose Crab Holic’s “Whole Lotta Fried Basket” to start our meal. The basket featured a tasty collection of fried seafood, including shrimp, catfish, scallops, and calamari. The scallops were particularly tasty. They were succulent and fresh. Not at all chewy, like some fried preparations. And, seasoned perfectly. My companions loved the calamari as well. 36 / Our City Davie / December 2021

Conclusion
What is great about Crab Holic is the simplicity of what they offer. If your family is full of shellfish lovers, or people who love fried fish, there is no better place for a night out in Davie. Crab Holic offers a delicious backyard seafood feast without the work. We can’t wait to head back.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Your 2022 Resolutions
A
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
s 2021 thankfully comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions include walking 10,000+ steps each day, eating a cleaner diet or learning to meditate. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you can answer the following:
will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I ▸ Who have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed?
I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the ▸ After debts, taxes, and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I created a way to reach important family and financial goals?
will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What ▸ Who can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me?
will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? ▸ Who What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care?
and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones ▸ When receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their
gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement? Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. Fortunately, there are many qualified attorneys in the area. Speak to several. Do your research. Ask questions. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! Please also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
