A Happy & Healthy 2015

T

he holiday season has come to a close . A s we

recover from all the festivities of the season, we wonder what is in store for us in this year of 2015. While we make resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can easily achieve. Therefore, let me offer one last toast to 2015: “Appreciate your family and friends!” Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Media.

STARTS OFF WITH AN AMAZING OFFER - ONE FREE MONTH OF UNLIMITED YOGA CLASSES Q. Is yoga mostly a women’s practice? A. There are statistics that show

T

his New Yoga Institute is centrally located at 12900 West State Rd. 84, parallel to 595, serving the City of Davie, Plantation, Cooper City, Weston, Pembroke Pines and Miramar with their Grand Opening scheduled for January 17th. We took the time to interview the managing partner and one of 6 full tme instructors, Stephanie Cabrera, to ask several questions. The first one being... Q.WHY 1 FREE MONTH OF UNLIMITED YOGA CLASSES? This is unheard of.” A . Most, if not all yoga studios, offer 1 free class. In reality it is very difficult to get a true sense or feeling for what yoga is in one class. We want everyone interested in getting into yoga, from the beginner as well as those already enjoying and practicing yoga to get acquainted with our studio, staff and for beginners to see what yoga is all about. When I got into yoga I took advantage of the free class offers and to be honest I was not sure if yoga was for me. I had a real purpose and goal to practice some ongoing type of exercise having started with Kempo Karate at a very early age and attaining my Jr. Black Belt at the age of 8. I later went on to become a dancer and member of the Somerset Academy dance team and the FIU Dazzlers. Always looking for the best exercise and activities to be healthy. I continued to pursue my goal and am truly glad I did, since there are many types of yoga styles and had I not continued I would have most likely not fallen in love with yoga as I did.

Q. When you say different types of yoga, what do you mean? Isn’t yoga just yoga? A. No, most definitely not. There are many styles of yoga, hot power yoga which can be heated or non-heated, there is Vinyasa which is a flow etc. and not all studios offer different types of yoga. So finding the right style that fits you is very important. If you take a class and that specific type of yoga does not fill your heart and soul, it is difficult and you get discouraged, you might never bring yoga into your life. You would have missed out on one of the best practices and lifestyles that an individual can enjoy. Q. So you offer different types of yoga? A. Yes, we offer different types during different days and hours. We have two large studios which allows us to do so without having the students feeling crowded and uncomfortable. Our classes start at 6:30 am and go on throughout the day unti 7:30 pm. Our institute is designed to accommodate our students’ needs and schedules.

this fact and the perception is that it is, but Yoga is for all genders and ages. It offers many benefits such as flexibility, relaxation, breathing and control of mind and body which is beneficial to all. We also offer a UNIQUE and NEW style of MARTIAL KRAMA YOGA which combines the movements and flow of yoga with the cardio and extensive martial arts movements. It is not to be confused with martal arts. It is yoga with the teachings of self defense rolled into one practice. This Martial Krama Yoga is truly unique and exciting, it allows for all genders of all ages to enjoy a full enriching practice not offered by any other yoga studio or studios in general. Our institute is designed whereas a couple can come in and practice different styles during the same time. Moms and their daughters can attend the yoga class and fathers and their kids can attend the Martial Krama Yoga classes or just sit and relax in our comfortable lobby.

Q. The 1 MONTH of FREE UNLIMITED YOGA applies to all types of yoga including this new Martial Krama Yoga class? A. Yes, you can attend any of our classes at any of the times they are scheduled at your convenience. This offers everyone the opportunity to find the right type of yoga that best fits them. Q. Are there any costs involved, like having to rent or buy a yoga mat etc.? A. No, Other studios offer rentals of mats which we also offer but during the Free Month of Unlimited Yoga we provide the mats at no charge and if you decide to become a member of our institute we offer class packages in which we include our branded high quality mats as part of the package and/or offer great discounts on the same. This also includes our custom made dry fit attire and yoga pants which are offered to our students at incredibly discounted prices. Wow, I wish we could continue talking about yoga and your new institute forever, you are so passionate when you talk about yoga that it makes me want to be a part of your institute. Well, you can take advantage of our 1 Free Month oF UnliMited yogA. I am sure if you come in, you will fall in love with yoga and see why our slogan is Healthy Body Quiet Mind. Come by and meet our instructors during our GRAND OPENING on January 17th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Cooper City Dads and Sons Prepare to Spend Quality Time Together By Debby Teich

O

n January 23, Cooper City dads and their sons will have an opportunity to enjoy a special evening together at the Father-Son Adventure Night. The event will be held at the Cooper City Community Center, from 6:30pm-9pm. It is open to Cooper City dads with sons in grades K – 5th. “The Cooper City FatherSon Adventure Night is a great opportunity for some father-son bonding coupled with a little friendly competition,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist. “Don’t miss out on what’s sure to be a fun-filled evening.” Approximately 80 fathers and sons are expected to attend the night of adventure, which will include dinner, activities, and fun. They will rotate around to different activities geared around a central theme. Last year’s theme was “flying adventure.” Dads and their sons flew handheld propellers, outfitted aviator rubber ducks with parachutes, worked on an airplane picture frame project and more. Seating is limited and no tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are on sale at the Community Center. The cost is $24 per father-son and $10 for each additional son. Proof of residency is required. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. On April 8, tickets will go on sale for the Mother-Daughter Tea, which will be held on May 9. Some other events that will occur later in the year include: Grandparent’s Day, Daddy-Daughter Dance, and Mother-Son Night of Fun.

Cooper City dads and sons participate in the 2014 Father-Son Adventure Night.

How Tag Usa Has Become The Best In gymnastics!

T

AG USA GymnASticS hAS A rich 45 year history as the original gymnastics center in Ft Lauderdale. Since

2009, owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan have made TAG USA the most successful gym in the region. In 2014, TAG USA pro-

duced four National Champions, over 40 individual State Championships and 2 Team State Championships.

As a progressive gym, we want an athlete to advance quicker according to their abilities. Parents can place their children in a variety of traiNiNg paths that best suit their needs and long term goals. We offer Recreational classes, Pre Teams, Shooting Stars (4 yr olds), and Level 1 (5 yr olds) non competitive paths. For the competitive gymnast, instead of advancing in traditional level by level steps, a gymnast can advance quicker and perfect in our Fast Track Program or in our Two-a-Day Training Program.

Mike Zoldan: “We invest in the TAG USA is differeNt than every other gym. Having the children’s needs” largest gym with the most equipment allows continuous training without waiting in line. We hire the best experienced coaches who follow our organized plans and we have more than enough coaches that allow one on one attention. Above that, Marissa and I closely monitor our athlete’s progress and have constant CommuNiCatioN with the pareNts. This is how we invest in our athletes and it pays off when children in recreational classes actually learn skills and when our team athletes win championships.

Miami Dolphins Distribute Over 500 Meals for Thanksgiving By Debby Teich

S

ince 1992, the M iami Dolphins have

been delivering Thanksgiving meals to families in need. This year, Miami Dolphins players, coaches, mascot T.D. and Miami Dolphins Women’s Organization members, in partnership with Publix, distributed 500 Publix Thanksgiving Dinners to 50 nonprofit partner agencies selected by Feeding South Florida. The event was held at the Doctor’s Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. “Feeding South Florida is grateful for the ongoing support of the Miami Dolphins throughout the year, but especially during the holidays,” said Feeding South Florida Vice President of Community Relations Sari Vatske. “Thanks to the players, coaches, wives and team for helping serve 500 families struggling to put food on the table.” Coach Joe Philbin kicked off the event by welcoming all of the families. Members of the Miami Dolphins family were there to greet families when they arrived, escort them through the distribution line, and help

them carry the meals their cars. Each meal, which was enough to feed a family of 7-10, included a turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, turkey gravy, cranberry orange relish and a marshmallow delight. The meals were funded by Miami Dolphins players and coaches. “It’s great that Publix is involved,” said Philbin. “Feeding South Florida and the players just do a

fantastic job, as well as the coaches and staff that are generous by giving both their financial support and their time to people who are less fortunate in the community. Thanksgiving is a special holiday for everybody, for families. And that we can make a small difference in the lives of these families is great.”

15th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair Is a Success By Debby Teich

O

ver 700 Davie residents gathered

to enjoy fun, food and festivities at the 15th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair. The theme of this year’s parade was “Razzle Dazzle.” It included floats, classic cars, dignitaries, a drum core, and more. “We had a record crowd,” said Kitty Preziosi, event leader and co-founder of the parade in 2000. “It was the best parade we have ever had.” Over 45 groups participated. They threw candy and beaded necklaces to the crowds that lined the streets. The parade sponsored a food drive with the Hope Outreach Center. The Humane Society brought its Mobile Adoption Unit, so the public could adopt pets on the spot. Some of the VIPs included Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilwoman Susan Starkey,

Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools Robert W. Runcie, Broward School Board member Robin Bartleman, Grand Marshall Billy the Marlin, Seminole Indian Princesses, Five Star Flashettes Twirlers, local beauty queens, the Grinch, and more. After the parade, the crowd moved to the Forest Ridge Greens for the fair. They enjoyed refreshments, hot dogs, inflatable fun, face painting, balloon twisting, games, raffles, a finger printing lab for kids, and more. There were also live stage performances by the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club Dancing Queens, Michelle Darbro’s Karate Kids, Pure Dynamics Dance Studio and many others. Kovac and Kiwanis Ride and Party for Underprivileged Children By Debby Teich

F

or the 29 th year , the K iwanis Club of Davie and West

Hollywood made the holidays a little brighter for students in kindergarten through sixth grade at Davie Elementary School. They brought approximately 150 bikes, over 1,000 pounds of food and a gift for every pre-selected boy and girl to the annual holiday party. “The children also had the opportunity to shop for their parents,” said David Roth, President of the Davie Kiwanis Club. The excitement began when Joe “Santa Claus” Kovac, owner of Kovac Automotive, arrived on his Harley. He was escorted by the Florida Highway Patrol,

as well as his Kovac mechanics, who were also on Harleys. Kovac has been bringing toys to the good girls and boys at the party for the past 13 years. The Davie Kiwanis Holiday party for underprivileged children has delivered holiday cheer to over 4,000 children and their parents. The families were treated to lunch cooked up by the Wings of Gold Motorcycle Club. They also received gifts of pre-decorated Christmas trees or a Chanukah bush, plus a bicycle. For information about the Davie Kiwanis club, call 954-494-2158.

Davie Residents to Celebrate MLK Day By Debby Teich

All schools and non-profit groups in Broward County are invited to participate. Entries can include any type of poem, from haiku to sonnet. They should reflect Dr. King’s concept of peace, love, unity, concerns for humanity and nonviolence. The deadline to submit poems to the Davie Town Hall Special Events Department is January 13. “I have always admired Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision,” said Harry Rosenthal, who attends the picnic every year. “He stood for peace, justice, tolerance and so much more. His message is still very relevant in today’s world.” Potters Park is located at 4300 SW 57th Terrace, in Davie. O

n January 18, the Davie P olice Athletic League (PAL) and the

Davie Police Memorial Foundation will host the 2015 Davie Road Race 5K and 10K & Mayor’s Mile Challenge Walk. All proceeds will benefit the Davie PAL and the Davie Police Memorial Fund. “We are very excited for this year’s race,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. “We have designed a fast, fun course with great cash prizes in our 10K. We encourage the community to come out and get involved by running, walking or just being a spectator along the course cheering everyone on.” This year, organizers have added 5K and 10K Wheelchair Divisions, as well as the Mayor’s Mile Challenge Walk, which benefits schools in the community. When participants sign up, they can designate a school and the one with the most support will win the Mayor’s Cup Challenge. Each school that participates will receive 20% of the proceeds donated back to use for its programs. The certified race course begins at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, located at 4271 Davie Road. The start times are as follows: 10K Wheel Chairs (6:55am), 10K Runners (7am), 5K Wheel Chairs (7:25am), 5K Runners (7:30am) and Mayor’s Mile Challenge (8am). Several high school bands will be located along the race course to provide support for the runners. Oatmeal breakfast with fresh fruit will be provided by Whole Foods and Tastebuds Catering.

For the 10K, prizes will be awarded to the following winners: 1st place Male & Female Overall ($500, trophy), 2nd place Male & Female Overall ($100, medal), 3rd Place Male & Female Overall ($50, medal), Male and Female top three in each age group (medals) and Wheel Chair Division Male & Female overall (medals). In the 5K, prizes will be awarded to the following: Overall Male and Female (trophies) and Top Three Runners in each category (medals). The first 500 registered runners/walkers will receive tshirts. Over 600 kids of all income levels are enrolled in flag football, tutoring, boxing, mentoring, Youth Leadership, and a variety of other programs and activities. Through this event, the Davie PAL has raised money to revitalize the boxing program, which has resulted in two of its athletes winning the National Silver Gloves Championship (Teofimo Lopez) and State PAL Championship (Javuane James). It has also allowed Davie PAL to design and create a new teen room with board games, air hockey, pool, video games and more. Bergeron Rodeo Grounds are located at 4300 Davie Road in Davie. By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

I

t is the beginning of another year and time to

fulfill resolutions to look and feel your best. As we age and enter our 30’s, our hormones are in a downward decline, making it more difficult to stay fit and look young. It is believed that our hormone levels decrease by approximately 5% every year after the age of 30. Considering that testosterone is responsible for building lean body mass and muscle, it is no surprise that as we grow older it is harder and harder to stay in shape, even with a good diet and workout routine. Testosterone is not a hormone only for men, but also females. Even though females have approximately 10% of the amount of testosterone than that of men, it plays such a big role in mental and physical well being. When testosterone levels drop, people may have symptoms of mental cloudiness, low sex drive, no energy and weight gain.

The replacement of testosterone may be in the form of gels, creams, injections or pellets. The most physiologic way to replace testosterone is by means of pellet therapy. Pellet therapy involves a simple procedure where the bio-identical hormone testosterone is placed directly under the skin to allow the slow release of hormones, avoiding the peaks and troughs as seen with the other methods. The body simply takes the hormones as it needs it. Through pellet therapy, the bioidentical hormones last approximately 3-6 months. Most individuals experience an almost immediate relief of symptoms of mental cloudiness, fatigue and no energy; however, for some it can take up to four weeks. When testosterone is rebalanced to the optimal levels as you were in your 20’s, workouts begin to show better results in muscle definition by increasing lean body mass. Testosterone is just one of the few hormones that may be replaced through pellet therapy. Estrogen (estradiol), for example, plays a big role in looking younger and is sometimes considered the “fountain of youth,” as the skin improves with more elasticity and less dryness. Estradiol is the estrogen that is cardio protective. It is unlike the synthetic derivatives that are composed primarily of the Estrogen – Estrone, which has not only been proven to cause an increase in heart disease, but also ovarian cancers. To determine if you are a candidate for Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy, a comprehensive medical history, physical exam and evaluation of hormone levels will determine your unique clinical picture. To address those extra pounds gained during the past year and the holidays, both the HCG Diet and the 28-Day Detox Diet are extremely popular. Both have a proven track record of eliminating those excess unwanted pounds If you want to look your best on both the inside and out, lose weight, and maintain the weight loss, it is imperative that your hormones be balanced. There is no need to live with the symptoms of mental cloudiness, low sex drive, no energy and weight gain anymore. Improve your health and look great! Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy using both pellets and creams in addition to addressing weight loss with the HCG and 28 Day Detox diets. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined Forty-five million Americans no longer have me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. health insurance, and those who do have found The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. that their benefits have been greatly reduced. And guess what…I started feeling so much That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a better! An entire That’s when I realized that I wanted to become week of care in my office costs what you could a chiropractor and help others. That’s how pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save… it happened! studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. It’s strange how life is, because now people The immune system fights colds, the flu, and come to see me with their migraines. They also other ailments. So you may not be running off come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, to the doctor as much. Cooper City Elementary Students Help Break World Record for Sport Stacking By Debby Teich

S

tudents at Cooper City E lementary recently

participated in the worldwide effort to break last year’s Guinness World Record for the most people sport stacking at different locations on the same day. The World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) hoped to surpass 555,932 participants and they exceeded their goal. This is the first year that the school has participated in the event. Karen Josack, PE teacher, organized the event, which was held during physical education. Over 200 of the school’s students, in grades Kindergarten through 5th, participated by stacking a dozen plastic cups in prescribed patterns for at least 30 minutes. “Our students were thrilled to be a part of this great event,” said Natalie M. Perez, Secretary II/Public Relations Director for Cooper City Elementary. “They really enjoyed themselves and learned a new great sport. Cup stacking really helps students with hand eye coordination, precision, focus, math concepts and self-confidence.” Eight-year-old P.J. Ball, world championship stacker and Cooper City native, visited the school with his mother to help teach the students the essentials of cup stacking. “P.J. was wonderful with the students,” said Perez. “The children were really able to relate to him and participate one-onone with him.” For information, visit www.thewssa.com.

Cooper City High Debate Team is Successful at Florida Blue Key Tournament By Sarah Sharpe, Student Writer

O

n O ctober 30, 12 students from Cooper City High School’s Speech and Debate Team headed to the University of Florida in Gainesville to compete in the Florida Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament. Blue Key is a threeday national tournament that hosts students from schools all over the country who compete in varied speech and debate events. “The competition was extremely tough,” said Debate Coach Wendy Schauben. “Many nationally ranked schools were present.” In the end, it was a weekend of officer victories for Cooper City High. Robby Robinson, the debate club’s president, took home a gavel as an Outstanding Presiding Officer in Congress; Karina Blodnieks, Lincoln-Douglas Debate captain, took home a 4th place speaker award in Lincoln Douglas Debate; and Juel Johnson, debate club’s historian, made it to semi-finals in Spontaneous Argumentation Debate.

Other Cooper City High participants included freshmen Alyssa Levy, Nick Tyler, and Shaina Kaye; sophomore Kia Del Solar-Patino; and juniors Ariana Milian, Logan Silverman, and Corinne Giardina. Some competed in debate events and others competed in speech events, such as Original Oratory and Oral Interpretation. “The CCHS debate team exceeded my expectations,” said Schauben. “Not only did they work their hardest to prepare for their events, they also conducted themselves professionally and represented what is truly great about debate.” As for the future of the debate club, Schauben is hoping that the team will travel outside the state for their next travel tournament. Great things are sure to come from this talented group of students. Sarah Sharpe is a senior at Cooper City High School, where she is the entertainment editor for the school’s newspaper. She is also a Teen Ambassador at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

AMHS Students Perform for ETC Members During Thanksgiving Dinner and Show By Debby Teich

T

hroughout the year , students in Archbishop E dward A.

McCarthy High School’s Drama Department, Step Team and Peer Ministry work with members of the Exceptional Theater Company (ETC). To help make their Thanksgiving holiday a little more special, the students prepared a musical for ETC members and served them dinner during intermission. “The Second Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Show was a wonderful and enjoyable night out for our members and their families,” said Debra Lombard, ETC Executive Director. Established in 1991, ETC is non-profit organization that offers drama classes to persons with intellectual and physical challenges. The class teaches techniques in improvisation, movement and music. With easy, fun exercises, the special needs actors have the opportunity to express ideas and feelings. The program enhances verbal skills, improves movement, builds self-confidence, and advances socialization while stimulating free thinking. Each class provides a setting for inclusion with the involvement of members of the community as volunteers, mostly high school students. Together they pick the themes and write the scripts for the performance. Every Monday night in the Maverick Black Box Theatre, Archbishop McCarthy students volunteer as “shad-

ows” to help ETC members memorize lines and lyrics, negotiate the stage, and have fun. “The Exceptional Theatre Company is one of our Campus Ministry programs here at the school,” said Cindy Keegan, Artistic Director at Archbishop McCarthy High School. “The Archbishop McCarthy students gain a respect for the mentally and physically challenged and learn empathy for their fellow man. The ETC actors get very attached and love the shadows. It is the highlight of their week.” The students are currently working with ETC members to help prepare them for the 2015 ETC Dinner and Show Benefit, which is the biggest fundraiser for the program. Past shows have included Sound of Music, Grease and other musicals. This year’s show will be held on February 21 at the Archbishop McCarthy High School Student Center. “This is more than a fundraiser,” said Lombard. “This event provides our members with an opportunity to be successful on a full size stage and feel proud about their accomplishments.” For ticket or sponsor information, send an email to Cindy Keegan at ckeegan@mccarthyhigh.org or Robin Gleason at rgleason@mccarthyhigh.org.

Put Estate Planning at the Top of Your List By Madeleine Q. Mannello Scott, Esq.

H

appy N ew Year! A s we begin 2015, many of us

choose to make resolutions to improve ourselves and our lives over the course of this New Year. Common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, stop smoking, or get more organized. Not many of us, however, will resolve to make or revisit an estate plan. While it may not be as glamorous – or as comfortable to think about – as some other New Year’s resolutions, I’m here to tell you that it should be at the top of your resolutions list this year! There are many reasons that people shy away from estate planning. Some find it too grim, while others think that they don’t have an “estate” that requires planning. Often, when people hear the words “estate planning,” they conjure mental images of vast country manors, wealthy society matrons, or inheritances worth millions of dollars, and quickly reach the conclusion that estate planning is “not for me.” I get it! But the reality is that an “estate” simply consists of all of the things you own when you die, including: your home, investments, bank accounts, retirement plans, business interests, and even personal property such as furniture and jewelry.

Estate planning involves very real issues that matter to everyone. For example, I’d like for you to consider the following questions: Who will make medical decisions for you in the event of your incapacity? Who will inherit your property when you die? Who will make sure that the people (and pets!) that are most important to you get the things you want them to get? Without an estate plan, the answers to some of these questions might not be what you think – or want. The fact is that one day these questions will need answering, and a small effort to resolve them now can protect you and those you love from potentially divisive and expensive legal problems in the future. As important as it is to create an estate plan, it is also important to ensure that your estate plan is up-to-date and well-maintained. This is critical, because the circumstances under which you originally created the plan may have changed. For example, look back on 2014 for a moment. Did you welcome a new family member? Did you lose one? Has your health or the health of someone close to you changed significantly? Did you purchase a new home, start a new business, or make new investments? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” it may be a good idea to review your estate plan to ensure that it will accomplish your goals. These are just some of the reasons that creating (or maintaining) an estate plan should be on the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions, but there are many others. Working with an experienced attorney will help you to navigate the many issues involved and will ensure that the plan accomplishes your vision and goals. Madeleine Q. Mannello Scott, Esq. works at the law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates, located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

ast month ’ s editorial (Part 1) covered the pro -

cess in deciding upon the need and therefore the use of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors, ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration, but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery, as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen, which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record, along with versatility of use, makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses, or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation, as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work, but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd., on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

Broward County- An Even Better Place to Call Our Home

Transplant of Knee Cartilage Through Small Incisions

By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

T

he B roward S heriff ’ s O ffice has achieved

incredible results in 2014 that have made our community a better and safer place to live, work and visit. Crime rates are sharply down in the parts of Broward County policed by BSO. In 2013, we saw a 10% drop in overall crime. In 2014, crime dropped an additional 8%. This means that in two years, we’ve seen nearly a one-fifth drop in crime rates, which is huge! In this time period, we have helped bring about the lowest crime rate in South Florida in many decades. These results directly reflect the amazing work being performed daily by the dedicated men and women of BSO. Last year, BSO launched the V.I.P.E.R. unit to target the most dangerous violent criminals in Broward – and we saw a large drop in violent crime rates. This year, BSO added another innovative specialized unit: the Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT). The BAT combats residential burglaries in Broward, using a combination of reliable “old school” police detective work on the ground coupled with high-tech, computerized, predictive crime modeling intelligence. This combination has proven highly effective, helping to reduce residential burglaries agencywide in 2014 by 30%.

Our Civil Citation Program, aimed at keeping kids out of jail and in the classroom, has been aided by the new PROMISE Program partnership between BSO, various police agencies, the State Attorney’s Office and the Broward County School Board. The objective of the PROMISE Program is to end the “schoolhouseto-jailhouse” pipeline by offering in-school alternatives to arrests and suspensions. In 2014, juvenile arrests were down 16%, due in part to these innovative programs. BSO also launched the innovative Driveway Initiative last year, where neighbors come together in informal settings with law enforcement to exchange ideas, concerns and solutions. The Driveway Initiative is about applying different strategies to reduce crime and fostering stronger relationships with the communities we serve. It helps find local solutions to local problems. This year, I hope to expand these initiatives to help recapture an era when residents and businesses had strong, positive relationships with their neighbors and with their local law enforcement officers. Finally, we have worked to advance our Uniting Broward community initiative. BSO held a community conference and an outdoor festival to promote diversity, safety and security. These events were exciting new opportunities for law enforcement and residents to listen, understand and build connections. Understanding and embracing Broward’s vibrant diversity promotes better public safety. When we make an effort to become familiar with the things that make us different, we are safer and smarter as a result. By working together, we can make Broward County an even better place to call our home. I am looking forward to 2015 and continuing the successful work of this agency. My warmest wishes to each of you and your family for a happy, healthy and safe new year! For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

ne of the most difficult things that

Orthopedic Surgeons have to deal with is what to do with the knee that has irreversible cartilage damage. The knee joint, specifically the undersurface of the patella, the end of the femur and the top of the tibia are covered by a substance we call articular cartilage. This looks and functions like the carpet that is covering the floor in your house. It is a smooth cushioned surface that helps the knee joint move in a frictionless environment. Without healthy articular cartilage, the knee joint can not function properly. Exposed bone in the knee joint by deficient, inefficient cartilage leads to arthritis, pain and disability. Patients present to the office stating that they injured the knee joint. They complain of swelling, pain going up and down stairs, getting out of the car, changing directions, unable to run or jog without pain. The injury is usually after an event that the patient can recall without any problems. The Orthopedic Surgeon gets some simple X-Rays in the office and usually they are normal. You see, articular cartilage does not show up in X-rays. After a thorough physical exam the initial treatment usually consists of ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. However, if the initial physical exam demonstrates severe findings and/or the symptoms persist or they do not get resolved, then the patient will need to get an MRI Scan to check for articular cartilage problems. The MRI Scan is the diagnostic study of choice in the detection of articular cartilage damage (bottom photo), meniscus tears and ligament injuries. If the patient has an articular cartilage defect (bottom photo) this is considered to be a permanent problem for the knee joint. This leads to abnormal friction forces, inflammation, pain and eventual destruction of the rest of the knee joint. Classically, patients who continued to have problems eventually developed arthritis and require a total knee replacement. Today, with advances in science, we can offer patients alternatives to try to salvage the knee joint. This consists of procedures that can be done through small incisions in the knee joint (Arthroscopic Surgery). The arthroscope is the instrument that has allowed us to manage this issue through small incisions. We can do a chondrolasty with shaving, chondroplasty micro fracture or bone drilling or bone picking. The chondroplasty is stimulating your cartilage, stimulating your body to make new cartilage in the defective area. The recovery from this type of surgery usually requires the patient to use crutches for one month and in most cases the patient returns to full unrestricted sports activities in six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Other patients can have a transplant of cartilage (top photo). This is usually reserved for those patients who failed to heal with the chondroplasty and have a focal well circumscribe defect in the articular cartilage. The surgery is also done through mini incisions, usually two or three. The rehabilitation consists of crutches for four to six weeks and range of motion exercises. After this healing period, the patient returns to activities of daily living and finally to sports within six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. prognosticator, has hit the “market” nail on the head. Most homeowners believe that winter is not a good time to sell. This belief is based on the fact that historically the number of buyers decreases in the winter and then increases dramatically during the spring. The National Association of Realtors revealed that the months’ supply of housing inventory has decreased from 5.5 months to 5.3. That equated to less competition for homeowners selling today as compared to the spring, when many homeowners will decide to put their homes on the market. As you can see, our inventory for the current quarter over the same quarter last year has increased 46.7%; however, we are still in a Seller’s market with only 4.5 months of inventory – under the national averages stated by the National Association of Realtors. A Buyer’s ability to obtain a mortgage has increased substantially since April of 2013. The projections for interest rates are on the rise: First Quarter of 2015: 4.3%; Second Quarter: 4.5%; Third Quarter: 4.8%; and Fourth Quarter: 5.1%. The average qualifying FICO score in 2012 for a conventional loan was 763 and FHA was 700. In September of 2014, the FICO score required for a conventional loan was 755 and FHA was 682. Again, potential buyers are now armed with more buying power. Pulsenomics surveyed a nationwide panel of over one hundred economists, real estate experts and investment and market strategists about where prices are headed over the next five years. They average the projections of all 100+ experts into a single number. Here are the findings: ▸▸ Home values will appreciate by 4.8% in 2014. ▸▸ The cumulative appreciation will be 23.5% by 2019. ▸▸ The average annual appreciation will be 3.6% over the next 5 years. ▸▸ Projection: A cumulative appreciation of 15.1% by 2019. In the Davie-Cooper City Areas: The median price was recorded at $356,000. The average price per square foot was $173. The average list price was $668,000 while the average sold price was $455,000. Overall, we had marked improvement in the Real Estate markets, and we are still the “hottest” place to buy. Now may be the time to sell your South Florida home. That is why you may want to sell your current home and reinvest in a newer home. A Developer’s Showcase has recently been added to the website. The new unit is intended to reduce the amount of unneeded medicine in residents’ homes and decrease prescription drug abuse, which has soared in recent years, especially among teenagers. More than 70 percent of teenagers say it is easy to get prescription drugs from their parents’ medicine cabinets, according to a 2014 Partnership for Drug-Free Kids study. The new unit will also help prevent the contamination of local landfills and water supplies from unused medication.

His favorite toy is a stuffed doggy in pajamas that he sleeps with every night. He likes to have his belly rubbed, eat doggy treats, go for long walks and ride in the car with his head sticking out of the window. He dislikes thunder storms, loud fireworks, the swimming pool, and soap in his eyes during bath time. His favorite thing to do is to play fetch with his toy animals. f you need some pampering , visit Alisa’ s Nails & S pa in Davie . It offers a variety of services in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Many customers have tried the spa’s newest service, 3D eyebrow embroidery.

Owner Johnny Joa answered some commonly asked questions about Alisa’s Nails & Spa.

When did you open? We have been open since December 2012. What do you offer? We are a full service Nail Spa, offering everything

except hair services. We provide spa manicures/pedicures, complete body waxing, facial skin care, Reflexology, foot massages, Acupuncture, pressure point massages, individual eyelash extensions and 3D eyebrow embroidery.

leave a flat, dull and fake look that tattoos leave behind. Also, it is not permanent, so you are free to modify the shape of your brows. You can continue with your current shape by simply doing a “top-up” treatment or you can completely reshape your eyebrows.

Who is a good candidate for 3D eyebrow embroidery? Anyone

is a good candidate. Many of our customers are people who apply their makeup daily; lead an active lifestyle; do not like the shape of their eyebrows; have busy schedules and want to look their best all the time; have light, sparse or non-existent eyebrows; and more.

How long does 3D eyebrow embroidery last? Depending on the skin type,

3D eyebrow embroidery lasts for two to five years. We recommend that all clients do a follow up visit to retouch their eyebrows two to four months after the initial procedure.

What is 3D eyebrow embroidery?

Cosmetic eyebrow embroidery is a semipermanent technique. Color pigment is drawn onto the skin to give you natural looking eyebrows. We use a natural feathering of hair like strokes to create beautifully designed brows. The 3D effect adds realism to the end result. The 3D eyebrow embroidery is not a hair implant.

Why do I have to do a follow up after my initial visit? You can never achieve 100% perfection the first time. The touch up will correct all of the blemishes and imperfections to finalize the procedure.

Alisa’s Nails & Spa is located at 8266 Griffin Road, in the Uncle Al’s Plaza, in Davie. It is open Monday-Saturday, from 10am-7:30pm and Sunday, from 11am-5pm. For information or to book an appointment, call 954-434-8430.

Family Owned and Operated Floor Solutions Group Offers Customers Knowledgeable Service, Top of the Line Flooring, and Installation By Jill Sharpe

I

How many members of the family work in the business?

f you are in the market for

new flooring but need some help deciding what the best options are, look no further than Floor Solutions Group. Sales Manager Carlos Almandoz has more than 15 years experience in remodeling with an expertise in flooring installation and bathroom renovations. He knows what works well and what doesn’t work. As a retired flooring renovation specialist, Almandoz has joined with six family members, including his daughter Carla, to bring the best flooring options to you. Carla recently answered some questions about the family business.

Currently there are seven family members working at Floor Solutions Group.

What can customers expect when they visit your store? We

How long have you been in business and how did you get started? Our office and

showroom have been open since January 2014. One day my cousin, Jose, decided to tell my father, Carlos, that his years of professional installation experience were valuable and worthy of something more. He then went on to convince my father, his uncle, that it was the time in his career to open up a flooring materials store. At the time, Jose was finishing up his Masters at NSU and as his career was in Business Administration he knew that we had a lot to offer to this industry and its customers. As the idea grew, more and more customers and friends convinced my father that opening up a store was a great idea. It was also perfect timing for me too, as I was just about to graduate from Florida State with a degree in Marketing. We knew it was the perfect opportunity and time to get this business rolling for our family.

ers whose workmanship, honesty, and skill are amongst the best we have yet to see. We have had so many customers come to us with terrible stories of their past installers. It's quite sad how many in this business take advantage of their clients. We are not happy until you walk away 100% satisfied with the materials and job we have performed. If you ever have a problem, we will respond at any time of the day, any day. For that reason, we use flooring materials that will make your home, office, or commercial store a true masterpiece.

What differentiates Floor Solutions Group from other flooring stores? Because my

father, Carlos, has been in the business for quite some time now, he knew exactly what materials to use and which ones to stay away from. Here at Floor Solutions we pride ourselves in our high quality materials as we want all of our customers to have the very best the industry has to offer. We also have a team of subcontracted install-

are a family owned and operated business. The service that we give to our clients is that of a family friend or relative. Our showroom is small compared to other flooring materials stores but we designed it that way because we wanted a more personalized, cozy feeling when you walked into our showroom. We also understood the pains of going into a flooring store and seeing so many options. It can truly drive a homeowner crazy. For many homeowners choosing the right materials for their home is crucial. We wanted to make that experience feel like it should, personable and important. Come sit down, drink some coffee, and have a chat with us on what it is that your family needs. You will be surprised to know that you will walk in a customer and leave a friend. That is our goal.

hardwood issues. With porcelain tiles you don’t have to worry about your wood absorbing moisture and expanding and you can still have that cozy warm feel that is given by natural wood and laminates.

Anything else you would like readers to know? Please ask

us for referrals. We have many happy clients who would love to show you the materials and work that has been done in their homes, offices, or commercial stores.

What services do you provide?

Personalized consultations, free at home estimates, and installation services. We also guide our customers who wish to install their own laminate floors through the process and will answer any question or concern at any time regardless of our business hours.

How have flooring options changed over the years? Over

the past few years we have seen hardwood turn to laminate floors and ceramic into porcelain tile, 12" x 12" tiles into 6" x 36" tiles, and traditional styles into modern designs. Right now the bigger the better. Flooring has moved away from the square look to an elongated rectangular look that is more sleek and modern. Customers in Florida are also very fond of the laminate flooring as it is more affordable and less tedious than hardwood. Lately, 6" x 36" porcelain tiles have become the popular choice for those looking for the wood touch without the

Ageless Medical Offers a Diagnostic Approach to Regaining Your Youth BY JILL SHARPE

is a National Trainer with Allergan, the makers of Botox, Juvederm and Voluma. She trains South Florida Doctors and other Medical Practitioners on injecting Botox® and Juvederm®. Erin is considered one of the top injectors in South Florida.

What can customers expect when they visit Ageless Medical? Honesty by setting proper expectations is why we rank 5 out of 5 STARS on YELP and 4.9 out of 5 STARS on Google. We have earned this amazing reputation by fostering a very patient centric environment where we listen to our patients concerns and then over exceed on their expectations. This sets us apart from many other aesthetic practices that have a set solution in mind before you come in. We are able to be more independent because we have such a large range of effective solutions and so much experience in the medical aesthetic space.

What differentiates you from the competition? Besides the

in 2015, then you owe it to yourself to visit Ageless Medical, a seven-year old Medical Aesthetic Practice located in Cooper City. The practice offers the very latest, non-invasive, FDA approved procedures performed by experts in a warm, comfortable setting at competitive prices. Victor Owoc, MBA, who owns Ageless Medical with his wife Erin Owoc, ARNP, recently answered some questions about the Practice.

What products/services does your Practice offer? We offer wrinkle relaxing solutions

such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and dermal fillers such as Sculptra, Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero & Radiesse. We also offer skin rejuvenation procedures such as eMatrix, SkinPen MicroNeedling, Medical Facials, Chemical Peels and Hydra Facials. Additionally, we offer laser hair removal for dark and light skin, laser tattoo removal; face, neck and decollate skin tightening solutions with Ultherapy; fat reduction with LipoSonix; and body contouring and cellulite reduction with Viora Reaction.

What is special about your staff? The many

years of aesthetic experience our medical practitioners have is unique in this business. Our medical providers are not only experts in the Medical Aesthetic space with an average 14 years experience, many are also “outside trainers” to other medical practitioners in the aesthetic industry. Even our front desk team are skin experts with many of them being aestheticians. A good example of this is Lisa Matire, Laser/Skincare Specialist - CME, CCE. Lisa educates and certifies Laser Technicians seeing laser hair removal certification in South Florida. Erin Owoc, ARNP

experience of our staff and our reputation, it would have to be the extensive range of the advanced technologies that we own (laser, radio frequency, micro needling, ultrasound etc.) A good example is our Naturalase Tattoo Laser. It is the most powerful tattoo removal laser on the market (and only one in South Florida) that allows the patient a shorter treatment time and fewer visits to completely remove their tattoo. Other examples are Ultherapy and Reaction, two of the leaders in face and body skin tightening that we own. Both are great examples of new technology translating to younger looking skin.

What are the latest trends in your business? Because of advancements in technology such as Ultheraphy and new dermal fillers such

as Voluma, patients are able to get very close to surgical face lift results without having surgery. These non-invasive procedures are only going to get more advanced in the future and knowing that many patients that do not desire (or have the time) to handle the downtime of having surgery will continue to fuel the growth of these offerings.

What do you offer that is new in the field? Reaction by Viora,

Ultherapy and LipoSonix are the latest technologies we have acquired this year. Reaction is a painless procedure to tighten the skin on your body and reduce cellulite. It takes multiple sessions but the results are very impressive. Ultherapy is a game changer when it comes to a skin tighten technology to lift your face and neck with only one treatment using focused ultrasound. LipoSonix allows our patients to lose 1 inch off their waste (abdomen or flanks) in 1 hour and only requires 1 treatment. Ageless Medical is located at 10640 Griffin Road, Suite 102 in Cooper City. They are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone them at 954-680-8330, email them at info@AgelessMED.com or visit them at AgelessMED.com.
