community news The Exceptional Theatre Company Reaches for the Stars By Debby Teich

L

ast month, thirty-five special needs actors and actresses reached for the stars as part of the Exceptional Theater Company’s 8th Annual Benefit Dinner Show and Silent Auction at Archbishop McCarthy High School. After two months of rehearsals, they sang, danced and performed for more than 500 audience members during “A New Home for Annie,” ETC’s own rendition of “Little Orphan Annie.” Although many of the actors are wheelchair bound, use walkers and have limited speech, they refused to let any physical or developmental disability become an obstacle. Davie Martinez and Monica Walters, who star in the HBO documentary film “Monica and David,” were among the cast. So was Laura Riviera, who uses her foot to input her lines into a computer since she cannot speak. This was the 17th ETC performance for Stephanie Levitt, 29, who has Down syndrome. Her mother Sandra Levitt says that she is brought to tears every time she sees her perform. The Exceptional Theater Company is a non-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization designed to teach theater to individuals of all ages with special needs and create options for personal growth by exploring all the learning opportunities theater has to offer. Its programs help develop and promote independence, dignity and self-respect in order to create and develop more fulfilling lives. ETC touches over 300 actors with special needs, ages 2 to 85, as well as 150 volunteers weekly. “At ETC we are making a difference one star at a time,” said Debra Lombard, Executive Producer. “The program

opens doors and helps the actors gain confidence and build self-esteem. They see others doing things and believe they can accomplish the same. I see miracles every day. I have seen those who could not speak, speak and those who could not move, move. I do not create these miracles; I just facilitate them.” ETC offers drama classes that teach techniques in improvisation, movement and music. With fun exercises, special needs actors have the opportunity to express ideas and solve stage situations, an essential lesson in theater and in life. The program enhances verbal skills, improves movement, builds self-confidence, and advances socialization. The actors and volunteers pick the themes and write the scripts for the performance. ETC offers 20 classes a week, which meet at a variety of locations since there is no permanent facility. None of this would possible without volunteers. Shadows work with the special needs actors on and off the stage. Most of the shadows are high school students. They typically develop strong bonds with the special needs actors and say their lives are forever changed. Several of the high schools have started ETC clubs which support the organization through volunteer and fundraising efforts. ETC also relies on volunteer seamstress, set designers, set builders, sound and lighting technicians, music and art instructors and much more. For information or to volunteer, call 954-729-3555, send an email to Stardom143@ aol.com or visit www.etcsouthflorida.org.

community News Davie Kids Raise Money for the Troops By Debby Teich

A

lthough Nicolas and Annaleisa Matzirakis do not personally know any of the soldiers fighting overseas for our country, they greatly appreciate their efforts. Last month, the Davie brother and sister showed their gratitude by setting up a lemonade stand to raise money for our troops. Jackie Matzirakis has tried to instill a sense of patriotism in her eight and six-yearold since they were little. When Nicolas was 3, she took him to Build-a-Bear so he could make a bear dressed in a military uniform. Afterwards, he mailed the bear to the troops along with some necessities. When her children see Veterans on the street or people in uniform, they always stop to thank them. “These men and women leave their families and make so many sacrifices to protect our freedom,” said Matzirakis. “We need to show our support.” Last month, Nicolas and Annaleisa decided to raise some money so they could buy supplies to send to the troops. They made signs and set up a lemonade stand at the entrance to their community in Forest Ridge. Customers purchased the lemonade for 50 cents a cup. They also had an opportunity to write notes to the soldiers on a heartshaped pad. Many of the kids thanked them for serving and protecting our country. A Vietnam Veteran who stopped by wrote “come home soon and safely.” In less than 2 hours, the children raised $24. They used the money to purchase items that they thought the soldiers might need, including baby wipes, gum, deodorant, mouthwash, lotion, mints, and more. Matzirakis brought everything to the Broward Navy League, which shipped the care package to marines in Afghanistan. Matzirakis says that her children are always looking for ways to help those in need. She recalls the time that the children noticed a man on a bench near Target who appeared to be hungry. They were eager to help him and brought him food on several occasions. During the Christmas holidays, they purchased fabric and made him a blanket and pillow all by themselves to give to him. For now, Nicolas looks forward to

the opportunity to serve his country as a member of the Air Force. He still has plenty of time, however, to make a final decision.

Sunshine Kids Club Adopts a Street By Debby Teich

E

ast Palomino Drive in Southwest Ranches is now litterfree, thanks to the efforts of the Sunshine Kids Club. The group recently participated in the first cleanup of their newly adopted street. Several months ago, members of the Sunshine Kids Club contacted Broward County to adopt a street. They were assigned East Palomino Dr., between Hancock Rd. and Holatee Trail. In October, an Adopta-Street representative met with the kids to give them instructions and talk to them about the importance of their efforts. The representative also provided them with yellow vests, gloves, trash pickers and a large supply of trash bags. On Feb. 18, 22 kids, ages 3 to 13, and a few parents spent time making a difference in the neighborhood and community in which they live and play. The group filled ten garbage bags with cups, shoes, glass, cigarette butts and more. Many, like Katerina Garcia, 12, were surprised by what they found. “I ride on this road every day to get to school and it always looks clean,” said Katerina. “I cannot believe how much we collected. So many people throw things out their car windows without thinking about what it will do to the environment.” The club has made a commitment to clean East Palomino Dr. a minimum of four times a year. Eldita Herreria-Garcia started the Sunshine Kids Club last year. She has fond

16

memories of growing up in Miami on a street filled with children who got together after school to ride bikes, play kickball and just hang out. She started the Sunshine Kids Club because she did not get the same feeling from her Southwest Ranches neighborhood. She hoped that the club would bridge the gap among the neighbors and provide similar experiences for her two children Katerina, 12, and Nikolas, 8. And it has. The Sunshine Kids Club is for 7 to 14 year olds who live anywhere in Southwest Ranches. Younger children are welcome as long as their parents stay. It currently has 30 members. Meetings are the third Friday of every month, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and rotate among the members’ houses. The meetings start off very structured and end with free play time and activities that have included swimming, potato sack races, egg tosses and more. The kids have been involved in several community projects in addition to the street clean-up. They helped finish the planters for the butterfly garden at Rolling Oaks and participated in the dedication of Town Hall. “It is important for kids to learn the importance of giving back to the community at an early age so we develop a future generation that cares,” said Herreria-Garcia. B

oys interested in improving report card scores may want to take up running and biking. A study of 1.2 million men born between 1950 and 1976 determined a link between cardiovascular fitness and intelligence. Researchers from the Institute of Medicine at The University of Gothenburg, in Sweden analyzed the physical capacity, brain power and socioeconomic status of men when they reported for military duty at 18. The data which was published in an issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that men with greater cardiovascular fitness were likely to be more intelligent and experience greater success. Interestingly, there was no association between muscular fitness and their intelligence. Therefore, regular structured cardiovascular fitness is needed in order to achieve optimal cognitive function and for development to take place. The Kids Ultimate Workout at our studio and the Kids Fitness Program at the Ft. Lauderdale studio offer children 7 to 12 years a fantastic cardio and total body training program. Many parents think their children are fit because they play sports, but that is not true. Your child’s fitness level is specific to the sport he/she plays. Every child needs a lesson planned cardio and strength program two times a week.

Another area to consider is weight loss medications. According to the American Dietetic Association, weight loss medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration may be part of a lifestyle-management weight control program. Meridian works on the brain to suppress appetite, whereas Xenia and Ally work on the gut to inhibit lipase. These work like reading glasses. They work when you are taking them but as soon as you stop (take off the reading glasses) you no longer have the benefit and may regain the weight. You must change your lifestyle for long-term success. There are actually some studies currently being done that look at hormones to see if they can be used as a medication to prevent weight gain and promote weight loss. The Food Coaching Program at Ellen’s Ultimate Studio in Davie deals with the struggle of weight loss very successfully. The two week Quick Start and four week programs are the most popular. These programs assist people by helping them make lifestyle changes. Ellen Latham, MS owner of Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and Pilates Studio, 5173 S. GRAND OPENING

An Eye Opening Experience By Dr. Charles Messa

T

he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. You may feel that the eyes looking back at you in the mirror every morning are old and tired looking. Or maybe people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts”, also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Trimming this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty trims this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. Eyelid lifts can either be done alone or together with face and neck lifts or eyebrow and forehead lifts. If done alone, the operation takes about one and a half hours for all four eyelids (both upper and both lower eyelids). Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids alone typically takes less than 30 minutes and is most often performed under local anesthesia or with intravenous sedation. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Sometimes eyelid lifts are combined with other procedures. I will discuss whether you might benefit from this combined procedure during your initial consultation. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty.

cover story Blown Away Hair Salon Is A Cut Above By Debby Teich

B

lown Away Hair Salon is a full service hair and skin care salon for both women and men. The Cooper City salon offers the latest in haircuts, styling, color, conditioning treatments, relaxers, Keratin Treatments, microdermabrasion peels and more. It has an experienced team of artists ready to assist clients with all of their beauty needs. Laura O’Shea and Ann Williams opened Blown Away in November 2010. The friends have been working in local salons since the early 80’s. They spent months planning and designing Blown Away to create a warm, inviting, upscale atmosphere with state-of the art equipment. The salon is decorated with rich wood, beautiful granite and a variety of chandeliers. “We want customers to feel relaxed from the moment they walk in the salon,” said Laura. And they do. As soon as they enter the reception area, they are greeted with a warm welcome and offered their choice of flavored water, wine, mimosa or coffee. They can enjoy the soothing sounds of the built-in waterfall as they read a magazine, watch the 42 inch flat screen television, listen to XM music or stay connected with free Wi-Fi. The salon has attracted a team of the most experienced and talented stylists in the area who are current on the latest beauty trends and styles. They begin each appoint-

ment with a consultation to understand the client’s needs. Some are looking for a subtle enhancement while others want a dramatic change. Stylists also work with clients for special occasions like weddings, proms, Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs, First Communions and more. The salon’s colorists use only the best brands and products, leaving hair with vibrant color, texture and shine, as well as damage-free. The formulas are customized for each client depending on whether they want to enhance their natural color or create an entirely new look. Since the process is often time consuming, Blown Away has gone to great lengths to ensure that it is as comfortable and convenient as possible. The salon’s unique and beautiful state-of-the art Color Bar allows customers to relax in one seat during the entire treatment. Colorists also use a Rollerball for processing, instead of the traditional hair dryer. Many of the salon’s customers come for Keratin blow outs and treatments, which have become very popular because they leave hair looking silky, smooth and straight, without any frizz or damage. Although many salons offer these treatments after hours, Blown Away has a private room with two separate ventilation systems so it can offer these services during regular business hours. Customers also like to relax with some of the other treatments. The salon has full service nail care, including manicures, pedicures, acrylics, pink and whites and gel acrylics. It has a licensed esthetician that offers waxing, threading, mild to medium chemical peels, microdermabrasion peels and more. Customers can also purchase a variety of products so they can

enjoy some of the benefits of good hair and skin care at home. Some of the products include Coppola Keratin Complex, Goldwell, Love Peace Planet (organic), a full line of Moroccan oil, It’s A Ten, Keune, A Natural Difference, Physician Choice and Osmosis. Charlie Varisco became a Blown Away customer when his hair stylist of seven years started working there. “I love the new place,” said Charlie. “It is very warm and relaxing. I always look forward to getting my hair cut.” Didi Browdy also became a customer when her manicurist of 24 years started working there. Didi has also known owner Laura for more than 20 years, as well as several other staff members. “When I am at the salon, it feels like I am with family,” said Didi. “The staff is very genuine and goes out of their way to make clients feel comfortable. Everything about the salon is soothing and relaxing. I just love going.” Didi stops by occasionally just to say “hello.” Blown Away is located at 12393 Sheridan St. in Cooper City. It is open Tues., 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wed. and Thurs., 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fri., 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sun. and Mon. For more information, call 954-392-5592.

lmost 100,000 people in the United States die each year because of medical errors in the hospital. To stay safe while in the hospital: ▸▸ Be sure an advocate — an assertive friend or family member — is with you 24 hours a day. When checking into the hospital, be sure to ask for and sign paperwork that gives your advocate(s) legal permission to know all the details about your treatment and to discuss it with your doctors and nurses. ▸▸ If you have a choice of hospital, choose one where your procedure or surgery is done often, not just the closest hospital. ▸▸ When checking into a hospital, make sure you tell them about all the medications you are taking — including herbal remedies, vitamins, and dietary supplements — as well as any medication reactions you’ve had in the past and any pre-existing conditions.

▸▸ Each time a nurse brings you medication, ask the following: What is it for? Who prescribed it? When am I supposed to take it? How am I supposed to take it (how often/how long)? What side effects are likely and what do I do if they occur? What should I avoid (foods, drinks, activities) while on the medication? Don’t be shy, and don’t worry about bothering the nurse with too many questions. ▸▸ Be sure anyone drawing blood, giving you a test, or administering a medication checks your wristband first. ▸▸ Make sure the hospital staff keeps things clean around you. That is absolutely critical to avoid infections. Hospital-acquired infections are a major source of hospital deaths. If anything falls on the floor, just leave it there for the hospital personnel to pick up. Be sure that nobody gives it to you — or puts it on your body. ▸▸ Insist that everyone who treats you or handles your food washes their hands thoroughly. Even if you don’t have a sink in your room, don’t be afraid to ask everyone coming into your room to wash their hands. You aren’t being nit-picky; you are being safe! ▸▸ Schedule inpatient surgical procedures for early in the morning, and try to do it on Wednesday or Thursday, if possible. Mondays often get backlogged, and Friday surgeries mean you will have the weekend staff caring for you. ▸▸ Avoid wrong site surgery. Prior to surgery, surgeons are required to sign their initials directly on the part of your body to be operated on. That’s called site verification. Make sure your advocate is there to make the surgeon do this. health & Wellness Look and Feel Younger Inside and Out By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

A

s we age, the skin on our face does not only wrinkle but we lose volume causing the skin to sag and fold. In the past, the only option available to address these issues was a surgical facelift. Unfortunately, a surgical facelift only addresses the sagging excess skin and not the volume needed for the fullness and dimension unique to your facial features. A surgical facelift carries the risk of permanent distortion of facial features (not looking natural), sedation and considerable downtime. A liquid face lift, depending on your objective for correction, can reduce wrinkles, creases or folds, gently lift the overall facial features, create a friendlier smile, open up the eyes and lift the lids, mask dark circles and bags around the eyes. It also has other facial benefits which give a more youthful appearance. Many men and women who think they may need facial surgery are surprised to find out that a better option may be available to them such as the Liquid Facelift. The Liquid Facelift is accomplished by using dermal fillers such as, Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane or Perlane and in some cases Botox. Dermal fillers chosen for the Liquid Facelift last approximately six months to over one year. As each client is unique, so is the combination of dermal fillers and Botox used for the Liquid Facelift. Dermal fillers have been used in more than one million treatments in over 60 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. No allergy testing is needed. The Liquid Face Lift takes less than one hour, no sedation is needed, and you’ll be back to your regular routine the same day. After taking years off your face with the Liquid Facelift, you want to feel as good as you look. By using Bio-Identical Hormone SottoPelle Therapy in combination with the Liquid Facelift, you can achieve that youthful energetic feeling of your 20-30’s once more. As we start entering our 30’s, our hormones are in a continuous downward decline. This decline and imbalance is more dramatic for some than others. The most common symptoms experienced are an increased in weight in the mid section, feeling tired all the time, depression, dry skin and vaginal dryness, and decreased sexual drive. By bringing your hormones back to the levels they were in your late 20’s and early 30’s, you can begin to feel your absolute best. After a thorough history and evaluation of laboratory results, an individual program for hormone replacement is developed to address your unique clinical needs using Bio-Identical Hormone Sottopelle Therapy. The Bio-Identical Hormones are identical to hormones the body naturally makes, molecule for molecule, and are compounded and tailored specifically for you. Although Bio-Identical Hormones can be delivered in many ways via pills, patches, injections, and creams, Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette specializes in Sottopelle therapy to achieve the most physiologic way of administration. The Sottopelle therapy allows the hormone levels to be maintained constantly without the peaks and troughs seen with other methods. Sottopelle therapy is delivered by placing the hormones directly under the skin allowing the body to access the hormones constantly whenever the body is in need. This convenient method allows delivery of hormones for 3-6 months, without having to remember to take daily pills or possibly having skin irritation from creams and patches. By bringing your hormones back into balance and having Dr. Jean-Claude’s Liquid Face Lift you can look and feel your best. Dr. Jean Claude Nerette owns and operates Bellissimo Medical Spa & Salon, which provides the perfect blend of beauty, science, service and safety. It is an all-inclusive facility where you can receive spa services, as well as visit their full-time board certified physician in Internal Medicine - Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette or board certified Family Nurse Practitioner - Stephanie Muniz. It is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive #3 in Weston. Call for your complimentary consultation. For information, call 954-384-8989 or visit www.BelissimoMediSpa.com.

Innovative Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids By Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, Cleveland Clinic Interventional Radiologist

C

lose to 75 percent of American women have uterine fibroids, according to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. And nearly one-third of those women experience the severe and debilitating symptoms. Unfortunately, many women don’t know that they have fibroids and accept painful symptoms as a normal part of life. Cleveland Clinic interventional radiologist, Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, answers some important questions about uterine fibroids and discusses innovative treatments. Q: What are fibroids and whom do they affect? A: Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus. They range from a few millimeters to many centimeters in size. African-American women and those with a family history are more likely to develop fibroids. Q: What are the symptoms of fibroids? A: Fibroids generally occur without symptoms. In most cases, they are discovered in routine pelvic exams. When symptoms are present, they may include: ▸▸ Heavy, prolonged monthly periods, sometimes with clots ▸▸ Anemia and fatigue ▸▸ Pain or pressure in the pelvis ▸▸ Painful intercourse ▸▸ Frequent urge to urinate ▸▸ Constipation or bloating ▸▸ Enlarged stomach area Q: What are the treatment options? A: Medical treatments include birth control pills and hormone treatments. Medications can cause menopause-like side effects and are prescribed to alleviate symptoms. Surgical options include hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus, and myomectomy, the removal of just the fibroids. While these options are generally effective, they require general anesthesia and a longer recovery period. Surgeries also carry risk of complications. A new option is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a minimally invasive procedure that preserves the uterus and greatly reduces recovery times compared to traditional surgical procedures. Q: What is UFE and how is it performed? A: UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to fibroids. The procedure requires only a small nick in the skin and lasts less than an hour. An interventional radiologist inserts a catheter (thin tube) into an artery in the groin and then uses X-ray imaging to guide the catheter to the uterine artery. Tiny round particles are injected into the arteries that supply the fibroids. They block blood flow, which decreases bleeding and causes the fibroids to shrink. The particles remain permanently at the fibroid site. The process is repeated in your other uterine artery for complete blockage of blood to the fibroids. UFE is clinically proven to reduce the major symptoms of fibroids, including pain, excessive and prolonged bleeding, and frequent urination. If you are experiencing symptoms related to uterine fibroids, your doctor can investigate further with imaging studies, such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cleveland Clinic utilizes the most advanced technology available in the diagnosis and treatment of uterine fibroids. To schedule an appointment with a Cleveland Clinic physician specializing in uterine fibroids, call 1-800-639-DOCTOR.

Ask the Expert Memorial’s Leukemia, Lymphoma and Bone Marrow Transplant Program: “World Class Care” Close to Home By Dr. Lyle Feinstein

T

he Memorial Cancer Institute Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program, under the direction of Dr. Lyle Feinstein, is the only BMT program in Broward County. Since November 2007, the Memorial BMT Program, located at Memorial Hospital West has performed nearly 50 outpatient autologous BMTs on patients with multiple myeloma and relapsed lymphoma. On February 18, 2011, Memorial Healthcare System received approval from the State of Florida for a certificate of need to begin inpatient autologous and allogeneic BMT at Memorial Hospital West. “The Leukemia Lymphoma and BMT Program will greatly expand treatment options for patients with hematological malignancies in South Florida,” said Dr. Daren Grosman, Director of the Memorial Cancer Institute Leukemia and Lymphoma Program. “Patients will no longer have to travel long distances to receive world-class tertiary care.” To this end, Memorial Hospital West is building a 40 bed leading edge hospital floor to accommodate patients with aggressive leukemias and lymphomas and those undergoing autologous and allogeneic BMT. The new unit is scheduled to open before the end of 2011. Autologous BMT involves the collection of a patient’s own blood progenitor cells prior to the administration of high dose chemotherapy. High dose chemotherapy is given to eradicate a blood cancer, and, in the process, the blood producing bone marrow is also eradicated. The previously collected blood progenitor cells are then reinfused to “rescue” the patient. The blood progenitor cells migrate into the bones were they create normal blood-producing bone marrow. Autologous BMT is mainly utilized for the treatment of lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Allogeneic BMT involves the infusion of blood producing cells into a patient from a well matched sibling or unrelated donor. The infusion of these blood progenitor cells gives rise to a competent immune system which is able to eradicate the patient’s malignancy. Allogenic BMT is utilized in the treatment many hematological cancers and non-malignant blood disorders. “I anticipate that we will be able to perform allogeneic BMT at Memorial Hospital West within the next 12 to 18 months,” said Dr. Feinstein. As part of a comprehensive BMT Program, Memorial established the only extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) unit in Broward County to treat severe graft-versus-host disease, a long term complication of allogeneic BMT. Allogeneic BMT recipients have traveled from all over South Florida to receive outpatient ECP at Memorial Cancer Institute. Lastly, the Umbilical Cord Blood Project, under the direction of Dr. Feinstein and Mary Roberts, EdD, ARNP, Director of Nursing for the Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital West, was launched on November 1, 2010. For many patients with malignancies of the blood and/or lymph nodes, an allogeneic BMT is the only potentially curative option. Life-saving blood progenitor cells can be obtained not only from the bone marrow, but the peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood (UCB) as well. Unfortunately, siblings have only a 25% chance of matching, and the majority of patients who could benefit from allogeneic HCT do not have a matched sibling. Furthermore, greater than 10,000 patients per year in the United States are unable to find a suitable donor. Minorities are vastly under-represented in national and international registries. Approximately, 10,000 deliveries occur annually in Memorial Healthcare System. Fewer than 20% of these deliveries involve the private collection and storage of UCB. Until recently, the majority of these potentially life-saving cord units were discarded. Memorial now offers expectant mothers the option of donating Umbilical Cord Blood at no cost. Umbilical Cord Blood is collected at the time of delivery and processed. Suitable units are stored at Duke University where they are available eligible transplant patients worldwide. Umbilical Cord Blood donation is available at Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, and will soon be available at Memorial Hospital Miramar.

To learn more about becoming a cord blood donor please call Memorial Healthcare System Umbilical Cord Blood Donation Hotline @ 954 844-6914.

She sent emails to family and friends and posted a message on Facebook asking for contributions of toiletries, home essentials, or other items that would help to ease the transition of the mothers and their children as they begin their important journey. She was overwhelmed by the response. “Everyone wanted to help on some level,” said Lori.

Some donated money or supplies, while others assembled the bags. Lori’s house was filled with deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, diapers, baby wipes, stuffed animals, sheets, towels, pillows, comforters, pots and pans and more. “We collected the kinds of basic necessities that these families don’t have and that many of us take for granted in our daily lives.” Lori delivered the bags the next day and four were immediately given to women who had just arrived. Those who attended the fundraiser at Lori’s house had an opportunity to hear Susan Nyamora tell her inspiring story. Susan said she hit rock bottom at 38 years old. She was homeless and had just been arrested when she learned that she was four weeks pregnant with her fifth child. Susan was facing a minimum of a five year prison term when she met a substance abuse advocate who sent her to a drug treatment center instead. After she gave birth, she was released to the SBARC where she lived for 18 months with her newborn daughter and was reunited with the rest of her children. “The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center gave me strength and provided me and my daughter with a place to pick up the pieces,” said Susan. “The therapists empowered me and helped me realize that I was not a bad person. Nothing hinders me any longer.” When Susan graduated from the program, she decided that she wanted to help empower other women facing similar circumstances. She currently works as a case manager helping the women in residence. She is happily married and enjoys all of her children, ages 4 to 23. The Susan B Anthony Recovery Center is located at 1633 Poinciana Drive in Pembroke Pines. Legally Speaking Is There Ever A Right Time To Loan Modify? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

I

n previous articles, we have outlined the pitfalls and disadvantages of most residential home loan modifications. Some of these include higher principal balances, the length of time required to complete the loan modification process, the temporary nature of a loan modification, and the high rate of default after a modification. However, there is a very limited set of circumstances under which a loan modification can work in favor of the homeowner:

▸▸ The Property is the Borrower’s Principal Residence - Most lenders will only consider a loan modification of a borrower’s principal residence. The rationale behind this is that a borrower is more likely to make all payments under a loan modification agreement in their family home, as opposed to an investment property. Indeed, the underlying purpose of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) enacted in February 2009 was to help homeowners stay in their principal home. If you are struggling to loan modify an investment property or second home, you need to consider other more viable options. ▸▸ The Borrower Has Positive Equity or At Least Owes What the Property is Worth - As most borrowers are painfully aware, most loan modifications will not include a reduction of the amount you owe your lender, but may actually increase the amount owed. Agreeing to a loan modification with a higher principal balance may place the homeowner so deep in debt that he/she may never “break even” or realize any profit from the sale of the home. For this reason, it is critical that a homeowner have some equity in the property they are seeking a loan modification, or at least owe what the property is worth. ▸▸ The Mortgage Loan Does Not Contain Elements of Fraud or other Violations of Law - Discovering that a loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law could be critical in obtaining the best possible outcome for any homeowner. However, most loan modification agreements contain a provision where the homeowner releases the lender from liability for any wrongdoing in connection with the loan. A homeowner should never sign a loan modification agreement without at least investigating whether the loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law. In order to rule out the possibility of mortgage fraud, a homeowner should conduct a forensic audit of their home loan. Homeowners should stay away from online sites that sell inexpensive forensic audits, and even from law firms that offer to perform the audit themselves. The Arcia Law Firm has worked with several qualified and professional loan auditing firms to whom we refer our clients. If any of these three circumstances do not apply to your current situation, you need to stop the loan modification process and consider other options. If you would like an attorney from the Arcia Law Firm to review your case in detail, please call today 1-800-770-7102 or visit us online at www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your free initial consultation. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to represent hundreds of homeowners in our community in foreclosure defense and bankruptcy protection matters. We welcome the opportunity to meet with you, and together determine the best possible direction to resolve your mortgage crisis.

ecently, the Child Support Laws officially changed in Florida. The changes would not be considered “sweeping changes”, but they were changes nonetheless. I began to think about how the present child support laws have evolved throughout my 25 plus years of practice in family law. At the present time, child support is determined by a formula and a child support guidelines chart. The base amount is determined by the income of both parents, the number of children, the time the

child(ren) spend with each parent, medical insurance premiums and day care or after school expenses. The above figures are compiled, and then entered into a formula to obtain the proper support amount. This was not the way it always was. When I first began practicing family law we had not yet been introduced to the Child Support Guidelines. Therefore, there was no real standardized formula for determining how much support should be paid on a monthly basis. The custodial parent’s income was rarely taken into account. Each judge seemed to have his/her own method of determining the amount of support. There existed some case law which could assist in the calculations, but it was far from standardized. Eventually, the Child Support Guidelines were passed and we now had a formula to determine child support. It considered the income of both parent’s because each parent had a responsibility to support the minor children. If one of the parents was not working and he/she was capable of working, the court could now impute income to that parent. The income of one of the parent’s effected how much the other parent was to either pay or receive in support. What the Guidelines did not do initially was consider the amount of time the children were with each parent. Changes came to the Guidelines shortly thereafter, and it was now determined that if a child spent at least 40% of the overnights (146 nights) with the non-custodial parent, than a different formula would be used. This formula was referred to as the “gross up” method and resulted in a decrease in the paying parent’s child support obligation. There was a presumption that if the non custodial parent was having more time with the children, his out of pocket expenses would be greater and therefore he would need to contribute less. Only overnight visits were to be considered. In January of this year that 40% figure was reduced to a 20% figure. Therefore, if a parent has the child(ren) for 20% (73) overnights, the ‘Gross Up” method will be used, since the term “substantial amount of time” has now been redefined as 73 overnights and not 146. Of course the more time a parent spends with the child(ren), the less he/ she will have to pay. So you can see that the area of child support has really changed through the years. Real Estate Five Reasons to Sell Your South Florida Home Now By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, Realtor®

A

gain, Steve Harney, a national Real Estate prognosticator, has hit the “market” nail on the head. There are many reasons to sell your house. 1. Interest rates are on the rise - Because of the foreclosure trauma, it is inevitable that interest rates will rise as banks recoup their losses. This will eventually dramatically decrease a Buyer’s buying power. 2. Dream homes are now less expensive - The list prices are dropping and the sold prices are rising. Now is the time to buy. For Davie and Cooper City: ▸▸ In January of 2010, the average price per square foot was $133. The average list price was $506,000 and the average sold price was $246,000. ▸▸ In January of 2011, the average price per square foot was $127. The average list price was $398,000 and the average sold price was $305,000.

3. Buyers are out - According to CEO of Trulia Pete Flint, “We’re seeing a national resurgence of buyer and seller activity on Trulia.com. In January alone, we experienced an unprecedented level of site traffic including 11 million unique visitors – which is more than 70 percent year-over-year growth. We are now experiencing 100,000 property views per minute.” The National Association of Realtors® just reported that the number of housing sales increased 12.9% over last month. 4. Inventory is lower in the spring - With buyers “out early,” a lower inventory, and correct pricing, your chances of selling quickly and at or above market are higher. The snowstorms during our winter season have increased visitors to South Florida. Many do not want to return home. 5. The Foreclosure Reality - Remember that foreclosures sell on average at a 41% discount. I spoke with an agent today who listed one to two foreclosure properties in January and February and is looking to list twenty-six foreclosure properties in the next day or so. As these properties are released to the market, they will be competing with your house for the buyers in the marketplace. CNN Money quoted James Saccacio, CEO of RealtyTrac on this issue: “We’ve now seen three straight months with fewer than 300,000 properties receiving foreclosure filings, following 20 straight months where the total exceeded 300,000,” said Saccacio. “Unfortunately,” he added, “This is less a sign of a robust housing recovery and more a sign that lenders have become bogged down in reviewing procedures, resubmitting paperwork and formulating legal arguments related to accusations of improper foreclosure processing.” “We expect a spike in the first quarter,” said Rick Sharga, a RealtyTrac spokesman. What are you waiting for? These are five strong reasons to sell now. Call me today to explore all your options.

t’s the letter no one wants to get. Did you know that more than 1.4 million Americans were audited last year - the most in a decade? Even more audits are expected as the Obama administration plans to spend $8.2 billion in tax enforcement initiatives in 2011, nearly a 10% increase over last year. Why the increase in the number of IRS audits? The answer is obvious…to make up for the huge budget deficits. Even if you aren’t that wealthy, the increasing number of selfemployed individuals may also be part of the government’s expanding tax dragnet. In any event, it’s always smart to be vigilant against the expensive and stressful possibility of a tax audit. There are three types of audits that you should know about. 1. Correspondence audits happen when the IRS sends a letter asking for clarification on relatively simple items. These are usually handled and completed entirely through the mail. 2. Office audits are conducted on the IRS’s turf. You meet with an examiner who wants to see documentation intended to answer their specific questions. It’s wise not to volunteer any other information beyond what they ask – you don’t want to invite more investigations than they originally were looking for! 3. Field audits are the stuff of TV cop shows. That’s when the IRS comes to your home and starts nosing around to see why that Jaguar is sitting in the driveway of someone who reported only $28,000 in income last year. These tend to be pretty serious. However, there is a system and methodology (by the way, sometimes, it could be a plain old random audit) that the government uses as it looks for particular signs and signals to indicate taxpayers they should put in the audit pile. The following measures won’t guarantee you’ll avoid an audit, but they’re key issues that the IRS focuses on when deciding which returns to target: ▸▸ Precise numbers suggest precision (rounding looks inaccurate) ▸▸ Include all sales of stocks and bonds ▸▸ Report all income – IRS looks for unreported items ▸▸ Avoid showing overblown charitable contributions ▸▸ Keep scrupulous mileage records if you claim auto expenses ▸▸ Make sure you can substantiate an office in your home, if you deduct one Steven R. indows are “energy holes.” So, even though windows make up only about 10% of a home’s insulated shell, as much as 50% of our energy is lost through our windows. Translated into dollars and cents, up to half of what you pay for cooling pours right through them. In Florida, heat is a way of life. Incoming sunlight is harmful to wood causing premature cracking and fading. The UV fades art work, rugs, furniture and upholstery. But there is a beautiful solution from Hunter Douglas. You can have your view and at the same time block the heat and UV with Silhouette and Luminette sheer shadings from Hunter Douglas. ▸▸ Kill the heat but keep the view - Come in to our showroom and see the evidence yourself. We’ll measure the temperature of the heat coming through the window glass with and without a Silhouette and you’ll be amazed at how much cooler it is with the shade in there.

04/30/2011

▸▸ Solar Heat Gain Coefficient - SHGC tells us what fraction of solar energy hitting the window actually enters the home. Lower numbers are better. Standard double-pane windows have a SHGC of 0.76, meaning 76% of the solar energy gets into the home. Add Luminette Privacy sheers and watch that number drop down to as low as 0.20. With energy prices rising, you’ll want to save as much as you can. At Beautiful Windows we have many different options to help you save money. ▸▸ Daylighting - This is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. The sheers from these products actually diffuse light as it enters and help draw it deeper into the room. Plus, you can direct incoming light where it is needed most by tilting the louvers and slats. Another added advantage is that the sheers on the Silhouette actually keep out 80% of the incoming UV to protect upholstery, flooring and art from fading. When you visit us, ask to see our oversized Silhouette with room darkening features to keep your master room cozy & cool. ▸▸ Motorization - Flipping a wall switch to operate your shades beats having to go window to window to operate each blind individually. Wall switches and remotes can be programmed to handle multiple shades individually or in unison. The “platinum technology” from Hunter Douglas can be integrated into any home automation system. ▸▸ View Through - If view is important, then you want the “4” Silhouette because it offers the most “view through” (space between louvers). It brings the beauty of the outdoors in. The Luminette marries the beauty of sheers with the privacy of soft draperies and allows you to rotate the vanes for infinite degrees of light control. ▸▸ Living smart - Going green is about making small changes that can have a large impact: Energy costs dollars – so the more energy we save, the fewer dollars we spend. Plus, by saving money and energy resources, we leave a healthier world to future generations. Living smart is the best choice for everyone. Visit Beautiful Windows’ 4,000 sq. ft. Ask the Expert Joe, The Plumber By Dr. Brian Udell

O

ne day, you look up and notice that there is a wet spot in your ceiling. Inch by inch the spot is getting larger and even starts to drip on to the floor. What is the next thing that most people would do? You would, I assume, call the plumber – right? Who would search the web for “drips in the ceiling,” try to understand all the possible causes of the wetness, open up the drywall and attempt to weld the hole in the pipe (or maybe it’s the joint, or something else altogether)? Yes, there is always someone who would attempt to perform this task, but it sounds pretty foolish to me. Plus, you could actually make things worse (think FLOOD). Yet, when many people have a complicated and sick child, they start searching the Internet for a diagnosis and even a cure, not a doctor! The web contains over 20 million pages of information about autism. Which page(s) should you believe? Which ones contain information that is incorrect and could make things worse for the child? That is what a pediatrician is for – to take an extensive history and perform a thorough physical examination, then give you as precise diagnosis as possible and work with the family to come up with a plan to get the best care. Then, you can read the Internet all that you want, talk to your pediatrician, explore other opinions and consider all of the new information that you are trying to comprehend.

Why doesn’t everyone take this approach? Why do so many people try to “fix the leak” themselves? Well, I’m afraid to say that the pediatric community should take a great deal of the responsibility here. That same pediatrician who claims that “all vaccinations are always safe” and “he’s a boy, so they speak later” has suffered a loss of confidence because of tunnel vision and an unsympathetic ear. The busy doctor who is examining many patients may miss complicated diagnoses which require more time. Too often, the specialists are viewed as cold and unsympathetic to the devastation that a diagnosis of developmental delay brings to the parents. Another contributing factor is the complexity of autism itself. There are often multiple diagnoses and the parents are caught trying to understand why the pediatrician writes “PDD NOS” and the neurologist puts “ASD”. Too many acronyms, not enough information and so the patient turns to the web. Finally, there are the non-doctor doctors out there who offer claims of cure and magic bullets to fix the child. Who wouldn’t want to get a completely “cured” child – even if it costs your home and future? What is the answer? Find a really good plumber! At this time, with the lack of state-of-the-art, the most accomplished doctors for autism are physicians who have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of affected individuals, and attend frequent conferences including the Defeat Autism Now community of physicians. If you try to diagnose and treat autism yourself, you may occasionally get some results, but you also might create a flood. Dr. Udell is a Board-Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist who practices Developmental Medicine in Weston. You are invited to read his blog www.theautismdoctor.com.
