It’s Vacation Time
T
he hot, sticky days of summer are here again. The sun is beat-
ing down upon us from above, cooling off ever so slightly with our daily afternoon rain shower. As the kids finish their last few days of school and the seniors celebrate at their graduation parties, it’s time to seriously think about summer activities and vacations. Regardless of whether you take short trips to the Keys, enjoy the magic of Orlando, fly off to far-away destinations, or if your kids simply enjoy the lazy summer days together with their friends in a local summer camp, this is the time when family memories – and pictures – are made. It is the million little things you do with your children, your family and your friends, which create memories that will last a lifetime. Never-ending work, studying for the next school year, or preparing for college can wait a tiny bit. Now is the time to enjoy life and each other. And don’t forget your dad on Father’s Day!

Davie PAL Has a New Garden By Debby Teich
M
embers of the Davie Police
Athletic League have a new place to go for fresh fruits and vegetables. Cooper City teen Victoria Delgado, along with more than 30 volunteers, recently planted a garden on the property and the children at Davie PAL are reaping the benefits. As a member of Southeast Florida Troop #11102, Victoria has dedicated 11 years to making the world a better place. She came up the idea for the garden as a way to earn the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. To earn the award, Victoria was required to complete a project that would make a mark on her community and create a lasting impact on the lives of others. She had to develop a plan, raise funds, find helpers and take action. She also had to share her experience with others. Davie PAL is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. When Victoria learned that there was a vacant area of land at Davie PAL, she knew she had found the perfect way to earn the Gold Award. Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s efforts to fight childhood obesity, she wanted to plant a garden for the children at Davie PAL. “Many of these children have limited resources,” said Victoria. “I thought the garden would be a great way to teach them about proper health and nutrition. It would also allow them to see how food grows and provide them with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.”
Victoria visited Lowes, Home Depot, DynaServ and other area businesses to ask for donations of soil, mulch, planters, bird feeders, tools and other supplies. She also solicited the help of the girls in her troop, classmates and Davie PAL garden club members. They began clearing the land in January and finished the project on Earth Day in April. Davie leaders, PAL Officers, and many others attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the garden. “This is phenomenal,” said Officer Tim Albury, Davie PAL director. “This was an area that wasn’t going to be used for anything. It gets the kids outside and they are learning how to grow things. They were really involved in the process and excited to see the finished product.”

The garden has tomatoes, garbanzo beans, bananas, pineapples, strawberries, a starfruit tree, red onions and much more. Victoria plans to plant watermelons for the summer and pumpkin seeds for the fall. She has been working with the children in the aftercare program to teach them how to plant, weed, water and help maintain the garden. “The kids were so excited to take ownership of the garden,” said Victoria. In addition to providing
fresh fruits and vegetables, the garden also fulfills the requirements to make the area a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat. Victoria plans to remain in Girls Scouts and get involved in other leadership opportunities. “Girl Scouts has taught me so many important skills,” said Victoria. After she graduates from Cooper City High School, she hopes to attend the University of South Florida and pursue a career as a neo natal nurse. Davie PAL is located at 4300 S.W. 57th Terrace, in Davie. For information, call 954-321-2561 or visit www.daviepal.org.

Experience the Excitement of the Davie Pro Rodeo By Debby Teich
T
Association. Audience members will have an opportunity to watch as professionals compete in seven major rodeo events, including bronco riding, team roping, steer wrestling, women’s and girls’ barrel racing, bull riding and more. They are hoping to take home some of prize money, which could be as much as $25,000. Davie is the ideal setting for a rodeo, since much of Davie’s architectural style is modeled after the American West. The original Davie Rodeo Arena was built in 1946 by a few local cowboys and some neighborhood residents. Today, the Davie Arena on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is a 72,000 sq. ft. covered facility with a seating capacity of 5,500. It hosts concerts, the Davie Pro Rodeo Series and many other events. The Southeastern Pro Rodeo Circuit will be held at the Arena beginning on November 1.

Neighbors to Celebrate the Summer Solstice By Debby Teich
As the sun sets during the summer solstice on June 20, a group of neighbors from Sunshine Ranches will meet for a small informal gathering at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the official start of summer; catch up with old friends and meet some new ones; and experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture. The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and shortest days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis which is located in the park. The public art feature reflects both form and function. The main area is shaped like a horseshoe and contains earth berms, stones for seating, a waterfall, fountain and shade trees. A concrete saddle sculpture sits on the western ridge of the berm. It is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset during summer and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit perfectly in the saddle, where a rider would. Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 8pm, leaving enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets. Organizers will serve refreshments. Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 Volunteer Rd., just north of Stirling Rd. in Sunshine Ranches. It has more than 20 acres of lushly-landscaped open space designed for the enjoyment of Southwest Ranches residents and their horses. It is the City’s first public recreational facility and a great place to school a horse; walk a dog; meet some friends or enjoy the surroundings. The park includes a 10,400-square foot practice ring, 37,500-square foot show ring, as well as more than 10 acres of horse

and nature trails. It also has a playground, restroom facility and a sheltered seating area. Laura Drake is new to Southwest Ranches and has already spent time enjoying the peaceful setting at the park. She plans to attend the celebration. “I have heard so much about the event and I am looking forward to seeing the sun set in the saddle,” said Laura. “It will also be a great opportunity to meet some of my new neighbors.” There is no charge for the event. The entire community is welcome. For more information, visit swranches.org or call 954-343-7452.

GrowinG with the Community for two DeCaDes
Since opening our doors in 1992, Memorial Hospital West has gone from a small hospital on the edge of the Everglades to one of South Florida’s most comprehensive healthcare facilities. During this time, we’ve had the privilege of growing up with the community, allowing us to tailor services and programs to the specific needs of our neighbors. Last year, The Family Birthplace delivered more babies than any hospital in South Florida and Memorial Outpatient Rehabilitation Center was Broward County’s busiest. Emergency Department visits and hospital admissions ranked third-busiest in the county, and Memorial Cancer Institute opened the county’s first bone marrow transplant unit. Our commitment to extraordinary care has drawn praise and received awards from within the community and beyond. But our greatest honor is the trust we’ve earned in the service and care of a generation of Broward County families. Looking forward to the next 20 years, Memorial Hospital West is dedicated to serving future generations with the superior healthcare our families expect and the community has grown to trust.

Can Any Doctor Effectively Prescribe Hormones? Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
C
an any doctor effectively prescribe hormones?
The answer is no. Hormone therapy is a specialty of its own, as it has many intricacies that are not cookie cutter recipes for the treatment of clients. It is not enough to simply prescribe a treatment that is not tailor made to the individual. In addition to having personalized dosages of medications tailored to you for the administration for the basic hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone for female clients and testosterone for male clients, often times this is not enough to achieve optimal well-being. A physician specializing in Functional medicine takes into account the person as a whole. The testing and administration of hormones may be just the first step to achieving balance. It might be necessary to do further testing to look at adrenals, neutracuetical supplements, lifestyle, testing for allergies, heavy metals and much more. Each client is an individual, and so is their plan of care.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging
Metabolic Syndrome
It is estimated that over 25% of the US population suffers from metabolic syndrome. That means that approximately one out of three Americans has metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a health problem that may include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and elevated blood sugars. The risk of premature death from a heart attack is seven times more likely than those without metabolic syndrome. This statistic is startling, since these people appear otherwise “healthy.” Aside from exercise, and eating right – it is imperative to check hormones levels for both men and women. Has your doctor checked your testosterone levels? Higher testosterone levels have been shown to independently lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. How can you afford to be without adequate hormones?
Adrenal Fatigue
Are you feeling not quite yourself, tired and having a general sense of un-wellness even though you may look and act relatively normal? Is your fatigue not relieved by sleep? You may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. Even the healthiest person may experience adrenal fatigue at one time or another in their life due to the stressors of an illness, life crises, or a continuing difficult situation. The problem is that continued adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. As adrenal fatigue continues, it is common to have some of the following symptoms: inability to lose weight, tendency to get sick often, lack of energy, unclear thinking, unexplained hair loss, allergies, reduced sex drive and much more. Your body does its best to make up for under-functioning adrenals glands, but what price are you willing to pay? Many alterations take place at the biochemical and cellular levels in response to compensating for the decrease in adrenal hormones associated with adrenal fatigue. Have you had your adrenal function checked? The good news is that the conditions listed above can be identified with proper testing and treated with natural pharmaceuticals, supplements and IV nutrition therapy, thus proactively promoting a wellness state and balance. To find out how you can be proactive and not reactive about your health, contact Dr. Nerette, who practices Functional Medicine and specializes in treating all types of hormones in the body to prevent disease and promote your highest state of well-being.
Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine and Sottopelle Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”
Dear Friend, want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
I
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you
an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/12) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOu THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT. great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Ellen’s Ultimate Workout Opens Studio 2 in Davie By Debby Teich

or more than four years, Ellen’s Ultimate Workout in Davie
has been a favorite among exercise enthusiasts. With a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and 35 years of experience in the health and fitness industry, Ellen has been motivating and training clients through pilates on the reformer, spinning, and Ellen’s Ultimate Workout. This month, she will begin offering even more fun and innovative ways to work out, with the opening of Studio 2 at Ellen’s Ulitmate Workout, located at 5173 S. University Dr., in Davie. The new studio specializes in hot yoga and Jen’s Ballet Barre Amped. It also features Miss Sue’s Mommy and Me Music and Movement program. Many are turning to hot yoga to experience some of the benefits it creates for the mind and body. The room is heated to 105 degrees, which allows you to stretch quicker and deeper. The heat can also help eliminate toxins from the body, increase mental clarity, reduce stress and increase vitality. “One of the keys to a good hot yoga class is the quality of the heating system,” said Ellen. “In most studios, it is either too hot or not hot enough.” Ellen invested in a high quality heater to ensure that there is always a proper exchange of air flow in the room. It also helps eliminate odors and prevent fatigue. Jen’s Ballet Barre Amped workout is the perfect solution for people who want to develop the body of an elite dancer

without dancing. Jen took the most effective components of several programs to create something new and improved for non-dancers. The workout incorporates the ballet barre, as well as straps, cushions, hand weights, balls and bars. “The class uses all of the muscles you don’t typically use in any sculpting, gym or dance workout,” said Ellen. “It tones the whole body by burning fat fast, lifting the booty and toning the thighs, hips, arms and abs. You will notice a change in just a couple of weeks.” Ellen’s is also offering “Super Band,” the latest fitness craze among the stars. Miss Sue’s Mommy and Me Music and Movement program is a fun and energetic way to introduce children, ages 4 months to 5 years, to the creative world of music. Miss Sue has been teaching the class for the past 13 years and is excited to bring it to Studio 2. “The children have fun through play, while improving their motor development skills, overall sensory integration and socialization skills,” said Sue. “They also build relationships with their parents and develop a greater awareness of themselves and their environment. This can help increase self-confidence and self-esteem.” Studio 2 at Ellen’s Ultimate Workout is located at 5173 S. University Dr. in Davie. Live a normal, symptom-free life WITHOUT the use of avoidance, pills or shots
“
At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G.

University School Suns Win Softball District Championship Debby Teich
F
or the first time in the school’s
history, the University School of Nova Southeastern girls’ varsity softball team won the District Championship. The University School Suns won 20 of the last 22 games, finishing the 2011-2012 season with a 24-4 record. The girls defeated Coral Springs Charter High School at the District level, but lost to Gulliver Prep High School in the regional finals. “Of course our goal was to win a state championship, but we lost to a better team,” said Coach Mark Montimurro, who won two state championships while coaching at Hollywood Christian School. He is hoping that the University School team will do the same. With four seniors leaving, Montimurro is looking to attract some new talent. “The seniors were instrumental this season, but the future is still bright at University School,” said Montimurro. “We have a wonderful group of girls and they are very coachable. They are willing to work hard and put forth the effort necessary to have a successful season.” Senior pitcher Ashley Rey, who recorded her 1,000th strike out, will play for Lamar University, in Texas. Senior short stop Amanda Johnson will play for Nova

Montimurro says that are several key players to watch next year, including sophomore Maddie Gott, 2nd base; freshman Nani Flores, 3rd base; and junior Gabi Martinez, catcher. “It was a very successful year and we are determined to go even further next year,” said Montimurro.

The New Autism By Brian D. Udell, MD FAAP
T
Good, clean fun… starts at Pool Centers USA
here were lots of media stories lately announc-
ing that, because the criteria for the diagnosis of autism are changing in the new Diagnostic Manual (DSM V), there could be a decrease in the number of documented cases. This finding was based on a study by a Yale University autism expert, and was reported in the New York Times. Others have disagreed with his conclusion. I am one of them. First, as I have been saying for years, don’t ask doctors or ‘experts’ whether the explosion of autism is real. Ask 40+ year-old teachers and therapists who have witnessed the epidemic rise in developmentally challenged youngsters. Some behaviorists, who are generally not covered under insurance, have proliferated… because they are the only proven therapy, and so knowledgeable parents seek their services.

The CDC studies that have documented the drastically increasing incidence of autism were not based on DSM criteria, they were based on the type of services that the patients had received. That means that the number of cases will not change in the real world. Calling the bubonic plague “an acute Yersinea infection” doesn’t change the incidence of the Black Death. Furthermore, I believe that the Diagnostic Manual is the incorrect storage bin for this diagnosis in the first place. Autism isn’t a separate mental condition, it is a medical disorder. This is a big difference. Diabetes is not in the DSM, schizophrenia is. Listing the diagnosis in this manner is not allowing for the paradigm shift that many brilliant researchers are discovering. The types of mental illness that are associated with thyroid disease, for example, are listed in that manner, not the other way around. Why is popular media so quick to pronounce that there is no epidemic? The intent of the study that started the controversy was to warn that, based on the new criteria, many children might not qualify for necessary services. While that is of great concern to many, it is probably an overstatement. At the Autism Society of America conference last year, the going concern was that the incidence of autism could appear to increase. That is because diagnoses such Asperger’s Syndrome would be rolled into the new category. So, if the proposed changes are utilized, who will be included and who won’t qualify for services? Language in DSM V is slated to include “… neurodevelopmental disorders… feeding and eating disorders…Disruptive, impulse control and Conduct Disorders… Neurocognitive disorders.” Is anyone you know being left out? The next standard that appears to be of concern is the inclusion of ‘severity’. There is a great deal of leeway in the interpretation, especially considering that the hierarchy is defined by “requiring support, requiring substantial support, and requiring very substantial support.” This is not a new debate. The new Manual will be the first major revision in 17 years. The committees have been requesting input from outside sources for more than one year, and will be considering the new information when making a final decision. The bottom line is this… I WISH that this diagnostic change would produce a decrease in cases! Parents will continue to seek assistance because there is some epidemic of childhood development that desperately needs to be addressed. Families will be just as confused about what is wrong with their child and doctors will not be able to help any better until we have more information about cause and treatment. Dr. Udell is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine and practices Special Needs Pediatrics in Weston. You can read his blog at www.theautismdoctor.com

s members of Western High School’s debate team, Stanley
Swindling and Jack Henry Kapp have been dedicated to participating in debate and promoting it within the community. Both recently received the highest honor awarded high school debaters: The Premier Distinction from the National Forensic League. It places them among the top half of one percent of NFL’s student members. “I am so proud of both of them,” said Nancy Dean, Director of Debate and Forensics. “Most debate students never achieve this distinction and they are only juniors. I can only imagine what they will accomplish next year.” There are currently 75 members on the debate team. With Stanley as team captain and Jack Henry as team president, Western has achieved outstanding results in both local and national tournaments. The team has a 50% or higher break ratio, which means at least half of the competitors make it to final rounds in tournaments. The team was just named the leading chapter in the Manatee District Broward, which is one of the most competitive districts in the nation.

Western High school students Stanley Swindling and Jack Henry Kapp won the NFL’s Premier Distinction.
Stanley joined the debate team as a freshman to improve his public speaking skills. He attends at least one tournament each month. “The tournaments require a lot of preparation and hard work, but it is all worth it,” said Stanley, who competes in interpretive forensics. “At the tournaments, I have the opportunity to promote social issues, while entertaining people and having fun. I have met so many people from around the country.” Stanley wants to study journalism and believes that the skills he has learned will benefit him. He hopes to be a member of his college debate team and plans to continue to make a difference in the community. Jack Henry also joined the debate team as a freshman. His father, a former high school debater, has been preparing him for many years. “I fell in love with debate at an early age,” said Jack Henry, who competes in public forum. “I have learned how to critically analyze political, social and economic issues, as well as how to speak extemporaneously.” Jack Henry plans to pursue a career in business and then move into the political arena. “The ability to listen, understand and persuade will help me in both areas.” He is currently an intern for Congressman Ted Deutch and will continue to work for him in Washington this summer. Both boys have successfully competed on a national level, attending tournaments at Yale, Harvard, Emory, University of Florida and other places. They have participated in community service events, as well as local fundraisers to help support the team and raise awareness of debate. They have also been working with debate students at Indian Ridge Middle School. At the beginning of the school year, they met with more than 100 middle school students to introduce them to the different types of debate and to get them excited about joining the middle school team. Throughout the year, they have been volunteering every Monday and Thursday to teach the students the fundamentals of debate and to help them prepare for tournaments. “We are hoping to take debate to a whole new level at the school,” said Jack Henry. “We want to help the students become more prepared for high school debate, so they do not have such a big learning curve.”

History Comes Alive at Silver Ridge Elementary By Debby Teich
I
t has been almost 20 years since Pat Widergran’s 4th grade class
at Silver Ridge Elementary discovered that a Seminole skirmish took place near the school, at Pine Island Ridge. The class decided to reenact the events of 1832, creating a tradition that still remains today. Every year in May, the entire school participates in Tanakeekee, Indian for “The Gathering”. Students spend several weeks researching and preparing for the event that brings history to life. “Many of the students live near the Ridge,” said Lisa C. Modafferi, first grade teacher. “It is important for them to know what happened there. The kids love the event and look forward to it all year.” During the Tanakeekee, students and faculty spend the day at the Ridge sharing their knowledge of the early settlers. Each grade level is assigned a different role that relates to the history of the area. Dressed in costume, the students maintain a campsite, complete with supplies to enhance its authenticity. Throughout the day, they rotate to all six campsites. This year, due to weather, the event was held at the school. Kindergarteners played the role of Seminole or Pioneer children. They made puppets based on the different animals and creatures in Florida, such as alligators, owls and birds. First graders were Citrus Growers. They taught their schoolmates about the benefits of vitamin C and led them in games of bowling and tic tac toe, using oranges, lemons and limes. Second graders came dressed as Ranchers and Cowboys. They led a horse shoe throwing contest and taught cowboy dancing. Third graders played the role of Frank and Ivy Stranahan,
34
owners of the first trading post. They traded toy alligators, cowboy hats, bracelets, plumes, spice bags and more. Fourth graders were Seminoles. They taught their classmates about different clans, wars, canoes and other aspects of their lives. Fifth graders came dressed in the military garb from the 1800’s. They pitched tents and taught the other students how to march. All of the students record their research and experiences in a working journal. They begin it in kindergarten or the first year they enter the school. Each year, they add the new things they have learned. By the time they graduate, it is filled with research, songs, poetry, timelines, photos and many memories.

Three Reasons Why You Should Hire a Law Firm to Complete a Successful Short Sale By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
R
FREE DVD
ecently our law firm has been retained by numerous clients
who are being sued by their former lender after completing a short sale of their homes. This is called a deficiency judgment action. In other words, the lender sues the homeowner for the difference between the amount owed under the loan and the amount for which the short sale was approved. In every one of these cases, the homeowner was not represented by an attorney during the short sale process, but instead, chose to allow a realtor to manage the entire process, including the negotiation of the deficiency. Most realtors, however, are solely interested in “closing the deal” and receiving their commission, not in the most complete and favorable outcome for the seller. Here are three reasons why you should hire a law firm to complete a successful short sale. Avoid the Dreaded Deficiency Judgment. The principal reason to hire a law firm to handle a short sale is to avoid any deficiency judgment action by your lender after the short sale is completed. A qualified law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, regularly negotiates “deficiency waivers” with lenders, and demands that the proper language and releases be included in the short sale approval letter in order to ensure that our clients do not have to contend with the costly defense of a deficiency action or have to file bankruptcy in the future. Lenders Negotiate Differently with a Law Firm. It is no secret that lenders behave differently when a law firm is involved in the short sale negotiation than when dealing with a realtor. Lender representatives know that an attorney understands the law and its implications for his/her client, and will not simply accept as true any unwritten promises or suggestions by the lender’s short sale negotiator. The end result of a short sale negotiation using a law firm is that the terms of the deal are more clearly outlined with no room by the lender to later change the terms. Quickly Identify and Clear Title Defects. The short sale process may be stalled or blocked altogether if issues arise with any liens or title defects on the property being sold. As a licensed title agent with Chicago Title, the Arcia Law Firm can quickly identify any title issues delaying a short sale, order a lien search, seek an underwriter title opinion, and clear any title defects in order to promptly complete most short sales. Our law firm also conducts the actual closing in order to ensure that our clients’ rights are fully protected from start to finish during the short sale process. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. You may contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule your free consultation. You may also visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information about the Firm, our staff and credentials, detailed articles, informative videos, and to make your appointment online.

University School Students Relive the Renaissance Period By Debby Teich
S
eventh-grade students at the University School of NSU in
Davie recently stepped back in time, as they roamed the halls dressed as Henry VIII, Michelangelo, Isaac Newton, Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn and other inventors, poets, artists, philosophers and aristocrats from the Renaissance period. It was all part of a five-week curriculum project titled Renaissance Assessments, which is designed to bring the Renaissance and Reformation eras to life. The students studied the works, lives and contributions of more than 34 historical figures. The program culminated with a weeklong feast for the eyes and ears. The event has been part of the school’s world history curriculum for more than 20 years. “As a teacher of history for the past 22 years, I believe the best way to educate students about the past is to bring history to life through simulations of the life back then,” said Cheri Rothschild, who organized the event. She says that she was inspired by a television show from the early 60’s called “Meeting of the Minds,” starring Steve Allen. “He would bring together actors dressed as famous people around a feasting table and they would discuss the happenings of the eras.” The Renaissance unit is project-based, which means that all activities lead to a demonstration of mastery at the conclusion. Each student was assigned a historical figure based on which one best fit their physical description, interests and personality. “The weeks before the feast, students spent time researching the individual person, as well as the time period in which they lived,” said Rothschild. “They explored using their textbook, media center research, class discussions, teacher lectures and then produced placemats, costuming, props, creative writings, movies and documentaries on their assigned persons.” For the feast, 165 students came dressed in costume and assumed the role of their characters. They dined on banquet foods, as Chamber music played in the background. The walls of the room were decorated with scenes from the European countryside. After they finished eating, they returned to the classroom to present their characters. “Shakespeare” discussed several of his major works. “Joan of Arc” talked about the turbulent times she endured, as she struggled in her crusades. Leonardo Da Vinci explained some of the childhood influences that inspired him in his adult life. Rothschild says that this project is always a favorite among students. “Alumni can often cite their roles in their feasts from years back.”

everal years ago, the State of Florida amended
its law concerning “child custody”. As a result of this change, the designation of “Primary Residential Parent” was abolished. The result of this change is that neither parent has “custody” of their minor child(ren) and each are to be considered equal. The term equal does not necessarily mean that the parties have equal time with the children, but rather they are equal in their decision making. What has in fact transpired is that many couples are in fact agreeing to a 50-50 or equal time sharing agreement. In many instances, this is in fact in the child’s best interests. Of course, as a result of this equal time sharing, we now encounter some new issues which seem to be causing additional litigation. Co-parenting requires communication between the parties. With more exchanges of the children between parents, there will obviously be more contact between parents. I have a number of cases where, although the parents literally do not communicate, the issue of 50-50 time sharing is being requested.

Another issue is the availability of one of the parents to be able to exercise a 50-50 schedule. The question is whether a parent who has a work schedule, which will not allow him/her the time to exercise equal time sharing, should still be seeking such a schedule. The issue is whether a 3rd party, such as a grandmother, significant other or “nanny”, should be the one exercising the time sharing so as to allow a 50-50 to be in place? Is such an arrangement really consistent with the concept of an equal time sharing arrangement? Common sense also seems to dictate that a 50-50 time sharing should only be considered when the parents live in somewhat close proximity to each other. Parents who reside a distance from one another cause additional stress to the children. One of the parents will have to use his/her address for purposes of school registration. Some parents cannot agree on this issue. In addition, a child who must be at school early in the morning will have to wake up a great deal earlier if one of the parents resides a distance from the school. Is this really fair to the child? This same problem exists if the child is involved in extracurricular activities. I have cases where parents have decided to reside in different counties, yet they seek a 50-50 arrangement. If the child has a soccer practice in Broward on the night he will be in Miami Dade with either Mom or Dad, will the parent from Miami take him/her to practice? If he/she does take him, what time will he get back to the house and when will he do his homework? The concept of a 50-50 timesharing should be considered for the benefit of the child(ren). Some parents need to be reminded of this.

Periodontal Disease and Chronic Illness By Matilde Palacin, DDS
H
eart disease is most often related to being
overweight, sedentary and eating an unhealthy diet. However, periodontal disease may contribute to it as well. Getting regular dental checkups is not just about preventing cavities and keeping the gums healthy. It can also help to prevent other illnesses. The first step is to understand how heart disease can be caused by periodontal disease, and then a dentist can provide recommendations to reduce any risk. What is it? Periodontal disease is a general term for any type of gum disease. This disease can affect the soft tissues in the gums and the actual bones that hold the teeth in place. Periodontal disease is caused when bacteria that normally exist in the mouth mixes with mucus and other substances and forms plaque and eventually tartar, also known as calculus, the hard yellowish mineral deposit that forms on your teeth. This buildup can eventually lead to an infection and gum disease. Why is this so important? The exact link between gum disease and heart disease is still under investigation. While the exact connection is not well understood, individuals with severe gum disease also tend to have heart disease. It is possible that individuals who do not use good oral hygiene may have other unhealthy habits as well. This includes smoking, being overweight and sedentary and eating an unhealthy diet, all of which can contribute to heart disease. The American Academy of Periodontology claims that much more research is needed on this topic. However, there is a possibility that the bacteria that causes gum disease and the plaque that builds up on the teeth can eventually enter the bloodstream. This may speed up the process of plaque accumulating on blood vessel walls, which leads to heart disease. This may contribute to a higher risk of both heart attacks and strokes. What can you do about it? The first step in preventing heart disease caused by periodontal disease is to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of gum disease. The American Medical Association recommends being on the lookout for gums that are painful, swollen, red, puffy or that bleed easily. The gums may start to recede and the teeth may become loose. As the condition progresses, teeth may fall out and pus may appear on the gums. Another sign is chronic bad breath that is not related to a food or medication. The second, and most important step, is to seek help, find a dentist, and follow her recommendations. In conclusion: To help combat serious illness it is best to take steps to prevent periodontal disease. This involves brushing your teeth at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride along with daily flossing. A dentist can recommend how often checkups are required based on the health of the teeth. A dentist should also be notified about all medications being taken as some can cause oral problems as a side effect. Quitting smoking and eating a healthy diet will also contribute to healthier teeth and a healthier heart. In addition, seek medical attention and don’t wait for your gums to show signs of disease. For more information about this topic, visit Dr. Palacin’s website at www.palacindental.com or call 954-472-4656 or visit the American Dental Association website at www.ada.org.

According to NAR: ▸▸ Pending home sales increased in March and are well above a year ago. This is another signal the housing market is recovering. ▸▸ The Pending Home Sales Index, a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, rose 4.1 percent to 101.4 in March from an upwardly revised 97.4 in February and is 12.8 percent above March 2011 when it was 89.9. The data reflects contracts but not closings. ▸▸ The index is now at the highest level since April 2010 when it reached 111.3. DAVIE: There are currently 113 single family homes that are pended. COOPER CITY: There are currently 106 single family homes that are pended. We are still at an all-time historic low for mortgage rates. Anamaria Atias Design Creates Beautiful Homes By Stacey Bomser
D
ecorating your home is a daunting
task. Styles. Colors. Fabrics. The choices are overwhelming. That’s why many Weston homeowners seek help from Anamaria Atias Design. Believing that “the space we live in should be our sanctuary,” Anamaria can turn any room in your home into your dream room. Anamaria Atias, owner of Anamaria Atias Design, provided answers to some commonly asked questions about the interior design business and her personal design philosophy.
landscaping and exterior materials, color and textures, interior and exterior space planning up to location of accessories. When I develop a commercial project, I take into consideration aspects such as norms and legislations, target and users, location, weather, style and nature of the business, cultural background of the users and clientele, etc.
if they only need consultation, I would charge an hourly fee. If they only want window treatments, they only pay the cost of labor, materials and installation of the treatment suggested by me and previously approved by them.
Do you work with clients of all budgets? Absolutely! It actually makes my job easier if we discuss budget so we can find the appropriate materials, designs and workroom for each client.
What is your favorite type of design project? Personally, I love what I do. Everything in my field is fascinating and the biggest motivation for me is to have a happy client!!! I enjoy all the resources available nowadays. Interior design is really exiting.
How did you get into this field? I grew up in the industry. My mom used to have her own architecture and landscaping firm (Espacios). I actually have a degree in architecture and worked with my mother for many years in Venezuela, before I moved to Florida. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Once I graduated and got some experience I decided it was
Do you have your own contractors/installers? During all these years of working in this industry and market, I have contractors for all specialties. I can recommend licensed and insured electricians, plumbers, cabinet makers, even audio and video specialists. I am happy to recommend multiple contractors or estimates and let the client choose who they want to complete their project. If the client already has the contractor and only needs my professional expertise to design details, select materials and supervise the construction process, that’s okay too.
What design trends do you see for 2012?
time for me to open my own firm: Espacios 3D Corp. That was nine years ago.
What made you change from architecture to interior design? I was always committed to formally finishing up all of my projects to the maximum extent of the details. Since architecture is more oriented to the shape and distribution of the space and inspecting construction, I felt that interior design would allow me to thoroughly complete the project from space planning to selecting materials and layouts (detailing) for flooring and color schemes, until the last arrangement of a coffee table.
What is your design philosophy? My philosophy is to create clean designs that are functional and livable yet also beautiful and very cozy. My main goal is to interpret the client’s wishes, capturing their basic needs and delivering a final product that is an amazing and creative space.
Do you offer any services beyond interior design? I provide my clients my professional support in all areas related to space planning, remodeling, lighting design, remodeling, detail and closet designs, flooring, bathroom and cabinet design, coordinating finishes, getting estimates from subcontractors, hiring, conducting and managing projects and logistics. I also offer furniture placement, accessorizing, custom-made window treatments and bedding. Basically, all of the final touches to make a home out of a house.
Do you offer design consultation or only project work? I assist my clients in all their interior design needs, from design consultation to managing a whole remodeling project, including shopping services and advice in certain specific areas and materials.
What services do you offer? I offer both, resi-
How are you paid? Are you paid hourly, per project, etc? Because of the wide variety of
dential and commercial design. When designing a residence I like to incorporate all aspects, from
aspects my career involves I decided to adjust my fees depending on the client needs. For example,

Design trends are heading to safe, traditional and comforting looks, especially color wise. The biggest neutrals are from gray to camel, but the accents tend to get trendier. We are seeing bold colors such as acid green, crimson and amethyst as accent pieces. I believe it is always important to take into consideration the “green wave” we are all trying to achieve. The use of environmentally safe materials is always a smart approach to design.
Anything else you would like our readers to know about you or your services? Over the years I have travelled extensively and consider myself, and my staff, to be multicultural designers able to understand different cultures and philosophies. This background gives us a wider perspective when it comes to analyzing and developing each unique design project. Anamaria Atias Design is a full-service interior design firm, specializing in residential and commercial properties. The office is located at 2800 Glades Circle, Suite 151. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, or by appointment. For more information call (954) 385-6936 or visit www. anamariaatias.com.
