The Olympic Spirit
S
ummer and sports seem to go hand in hand. The ballparks
and pools are filled with children practicing and playing as they enjoy the joys of childhood. Meantime, across the pond in London, young athletes from all around the globe are getting ready to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. Every four years the top athletes in the different summer Olympic sports meet to compete. While each of these athletes has trained hard for years to prepare for this pinnacle of international competition, winning their individual discipline is not the only thing on their mind. The Olympic Games stand for uniting the youth of the world for a better, global society. While there will always be differences in opinions and priorities, the young competitors from all over the world demonstrate to us that by working together with patience and tolerance we can overcome any obstacle. We will do well to remember that lesson in our daily lives. It may help us to be more tolerant towards each other and overcome disagreements with spouses, coworkers and neighbors. When watching the competitions of the 2012 Olympic Games unfold with your loved ones, rejoice in the spirit of the game and the spirit of togetherness. Cherish these quality moments!

Kids Stay Active in Youth Triathlon Club By Debby Teich
T
here are many ways for kids to stay active over the summer.
Some have joined the South Florida Sea Dragons, a youth triathlon club dedicated to promoting a multi-sport lifestyle for boys and girls, ages 7-15. Kids train with other kids in a fun, safe environment. The triathlon season runs from March to October. Most of the races feature the familiar swim-bike-run format, but the distances are much shorter than in adult races. It is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the United States. “Kids do not have to be super athletes to participate in a triathlon.” said founder Maria Supik, who coaches the kids. “If they can run, bike and swim, they can enter. Since there are three very different activities, they don’t get bored. These are also three sports that most kids do well.” Maria started the South Florida Sea Dragons last year. There are currently 12 members, including her own son Alex, who has participated in many Sea Dragons Triathlete Club triathlons. The athletes

represent every body type and fitness level and each one has a different race goal. Some just want to finish, while others are trying to set a new personal record or win the whole race. “In most team sports, the best players get the most playing time,” said Maria. “In triathlons, everyone has the same opportunity to compete.” Maria coaches the kids Monday through Thursday on a rotating schedule. Training consists of one day of biking, one day of running and two days of swimming. They practice running and biking at local parks. They swim at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center with the Cyclones Swim Team. The kids also work on transitions and conditioning. “Most kids can finish a triathlon, as long as they have the desire,” said Maria. “The more they train, the better they get.” In May and June, club members competed in several local youth triathlons. They will participate in five more Alex Supik leaves the water at Ironkids. He in July, August and September, including the Miami finished in 3rd place and Kids Tri on August 5 and September 2, the I Tri’d 5-15 qualified for Nationals. Kids Triathlon on July 15 and August 12, and the USAT Nationals in Ohio on August 11. The kids have done very well in the competitions. Davie Teen Collects Books for Invisible Children By Debby Teich
S
eventeen-year-old Gabrielle Beecher of Davie is doing what
she can to change the world - one book at a time. She is hoping to collect 10,000 books for Invisible Children and she is well on her way to achieving her goal. She got the idea for the book drive several months ago, while watching Invisible Children: Rough Cut in her theology class at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School. The 2006 American documentary film depicts the filmmakers’ views about the human rights abuses by the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. When she learned that more than 30,000 children in Central Africa have been forced to become child soldiers, she knew she needed to find a way to help them. Gabrielle contacted the headquarters of Invisible
Children, which works with LRA-affected communities in Central Africa, and they suggested a book drive. She met with the school administration and they agreed to support her efforts. Gabrielle developed a presentation and spoke to students in all of the school’s English classes to convince them to help. “While we are worried about getting the latest IPhone, the children in Uganda are worried about genocide,” said Gabrielle. “It is our responsibility to help them. The money raised from the sale of the books will be used to rebuild schools, promote literacy and provide scholarships in Northern Uganda.” Gabrielle asked the students to reach out to friends, family and neighbors to collect gently used, unwanted books and the response was very positive. Students donated books on a variety subjects, from the solar system to horse grooming - and everything in between. They brought in books by Shakespeare and Hemmingway, as well as children’s fiction. In return, students received one service hour for every five books they donated. “I feel good, because I know that I have made a difference,” said Gabrielle. “If my efforts help build a school or just get one child out of the army, it will all be worth it.” To donate a book, send an email to gabrielle.beecher@yahoo.com. Are You Fatigued? Or Are Your Adrenal Glands Fatigued? Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
A
re financial pressures, emotional stress,
unemployment, poor eating habits, smoking or drugs causing your adrenal glands to fail? Have you felt as though you just cannot seem to get yourself together? Is it hard for you to relax or to get exercise? Do you find that you get sick more often? If so, then you like many others may be experiencing symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue. What is Adrenal Fatigue? Adrenal Fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, it can also arise during or after acute or chronic infections. As the name suggests, its paramount symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep. You may look and act relatively normal with adrenal fatigue and may not have any of the sings of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of un-wellness, tiredness or “gray” feelings. People suffering from adrenal fatigue often have to use coffee, colas, or other stimulants to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. Although it affects millions of people, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. Adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. With each increment of reduction in adrenal function, every organ and system in your body is more profoundly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive. Your body does its best to make up for the under functioning adrenals, but it does so at a price. What causes adrenal fatigue? It is produced when your adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crisis such as a death of a loved one, a physical crisis such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal fatigue. How common is adrenal fatigue? It is estimated that approximately 66% of the population has some degree of low Cortisol. How can I tell if my adrenals are fatigued? . Tendency to gain weight . Reduced sex drive . Unable to remember things and unclear thinking . Lack of energy in the mornings and also in the afternoon between 3 to 5pm . Need coffee or stimulants to get going in the morning . Unexplained hair loss . Crave for salty, fatty, and high protein food such as meat and cheese . Decreased ability to handle stress and responsibilities Can people experiencing adrenal fatigue feel their best again? Yes, with proper care, the right type of testing, and physician awareness, one can expect to feel good again. The adrenals can be placed back into balance with proper treatment that may include supplements by mouth and/or intravenously and lifestyle changes to create balance. For detailed information about how you can help support and correct your adrenal glands, make an appointment with Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette for your complimentary consultation. NoticeME! Partners with F.A.S.T. Camp to Help Inner City Athletes By Debby Teich
A
lthough most kids dream of attending college, not all of
high school. Jose has tried to make the program affordable, but realizes that there are still many families who do not have the money to pay for it. “I want to ensure that no student is left out when it comes to a proven path to attend college on a scholarship,” said Jose. NoticeME! is now offering the service free to kids enrolled in F.A.S.T. Camp Inc., which provides at risk children and adolescents with the opportunity to develop both physical and life skills, including fitness, teamwork, discipline, respect, and self-confidence. “We’re leveling the playing field for these inner city kids and giving them equal access to the advantages and opportunities our program offers,” said Jose. Melvin Murphy, co-founder of F.A.S.T. Camp, Inc., says he is excited about the partnership. “It will allow many of our players to achieve their dream of attending college,” said Melvin. “For too many of our youth, the soaring cost of college tuition has placed this dream out of reach. Now, thanks to the NoticeME! program, it’s attainable.” NoticeME! is also offering free services to kids involved with the Miami Marlins Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) youth program, which offers children ages 13-18, who live in disadvantaged areas, the opportunity to participate in organized baseball. He will also waive the fee for any student athlete experiencing financial hardship.
them can afford it. Very often, talented inner city youth do not have the same access to colleges and coaches as youth in suburban areas. A new partnership between NoticeME!, a Davie-based college selection service for high school student athletes, and F.A.S.T. Camp, Inc. will give inner city student athletes a chance to win college scholarships and help them get the attention of colleges and coaches. In 2009, Jose Correa founded NoticeME! after using a college recruiting service for his own daughter, who earned an athletic and academic scholarship to play Division I soccer. “The recruiting service was expensive and ineffective, so I decided to create one of my own,” said Jose. The NoticeME! program helps student athletes and performance arts students find and fund a college program. It does not matter if the student can or wants to continue participating in sports or performance arts in college. Students fill out a profile, which includes their academic information, athletic or performance data, volunteer efforts, videos, photos and more. A sophisticated computer program matches the students with coaches and directors and a tracker allows them to see when someone has viewed their profile. NoticeME! also gives the students the tools they need to contact anyone who is interested. The cost of the program is $19.95 per month and NoticeME! NoticeME! connects student athletes donates 30 percent of the fee to athletic programs at the subscriber’s with colleges and scholarships.

Davie Offers Temporary Housing for Horses during Major Storms By Debby Teich
D
avie’s rural character and equestrian lifestyle has
attracted thousands of residents who own horses. The Town of Davie wants to make sure that these horses are safe in the event that a major storm threatens the area. For the past seven years, the Town has opened a 100acre fenced pasture at Robbins Park on Hiatus to serve as a holding area before and during a hurricane or natural disaster. The Town has already begun accepting pre-registration applications for the Temporary Housing for Horses Program. There is an annual fee of $20 per horse and applications are available online at www.davie-fl.gov. The program is only open to Davie residents or people who board their horses in Davie. Once a hurricane warning has been issued, the site will open for pre-registered horses only. This site will reopen to allow owners to retrieve their horses when the winds have subsided to a minimum of 40 mph. The Town encourages residents to visit the site before they pre-register to determine if it is safer than their current situation. Helen Fields of Davie plans to sign up for the program as a safety precaution. She has developed her own hurricane plan for her two horses. If there is an intense hurricane, however, she may decide to bring them to the park. “I prefer to keep my horses on my own property, so I can make sure they are okay,” said Fields. “I am happy that the Town has a program and I will certainly use it if I feel that my horses are in danger.” For information, call 954-797-1163 or send an email to matthew_mlodzinski@ davie-fl.gov. To access the application online, visit www.davie-fl.gov, click on Hurricane Info and locate Davie Horse Release Program.

TAG USA Gymnastics Creates Champions
T
AG USA Gymnastics had a stellar season, with championship trophies stacked up taller than most of its gymnasts. In the three short years since Marissa and Michael Zoldan became owners, they have built the gym into the most successful gymnastics program in Broward County. The couple shared TAG USA’s season highlights and the secrets to their success.
TAG USA Gymnastics had an incredible season. What were your greatest accomplishments? Marissa: It has been another great year
for TAG USA Gymnastics. This past season, our Level 3, Level 4 and Prep-Optional Girls teams all earned State Championships and many of our gymnasts were individual event State Champions. Five TAG USA gymnasts earned coveted spots on the Florida State Team. To qualify, the girls had to be the top scoring gymnasts in the State Meet in their age divisions. Our Boys Gymnastics team had a phenomenal year as well with nine individual State Champions, two Regional Champions and our Elite athlete won seven gold medals at the Mexican Nationals. Our Trampoline team won at each meet, finished first at the State Championships and qualified 26 athletes for the National Championships. Even our new Cheer team won their competitions to become State Champions. TAG USA has definitely become the premier gymnastics program in Fort Lauderdale.
What are people saying about TAG USA Gymnastics? Michael: What the community hears most about is that TAG USA’s training programs are very different from other local gyms. The outcome of our program is that our athletes win State and Regional Championships. Parents see our championships and want their children to become part of TAG’s champion successes. Our success is in the continued increase in young gymnasts joining TAG USA which shows how much parents believe in our programs.
What is the secret to your program’s success? Marissa: The TAG
USA program pushes technique and trains for higher skills. As a former Elite gymnast, I know that in order to build a rock solid program you need to have an unparalleled coaching staff dedicated to teaching new skills and encouraging gymnasts to progress at their own pace. Here,
TAG USA Gymnastics Elite Team Scholarship Program All Level 9, 10 and Elite Girl Gymnasts are eligible for a Tuition Scholarship for the 2012-2013 Season. Application deadline is August 28th For more information contact Silvana at (954) 384-9393 a gymnast who masters skills can move up in levels at any point in the session. Before we bought TAG USA, our daughter Maia was a Level 5 gymnast at another gym, but after three years of training with our program, she is now on Level 10. We train at a very high level which is one of the reasons our athletes out-perform other gyms.
What else differentiates TAG USA Gymnastics from other gyms?
Michael: When we bought TAG three years ago, we determined that our gym needed to be completely different than other established gymnastic centers. Our children were members at another local gym and we knew that we wanted the “new” TAG to run differently in program content and customer service. One major difference is TAG’s commitment to a USAG program for all of our team levels. By having all team levels train under USAG rules, our upper level athletes are accustomed to the stricter scoring guidelines. Many gyms compete under AAU guidelines because they can market higher scores using this less strict AAU scoring method.
You have made customer service a top priority. Why is this so important? Marissa: When we first bought TAG we needed to change
TAG’s image. We immediately upgraded the coaching staff and created a serious gymnastics program, but we also made a commitment to customer service. One major difference between TAG USA and other gyms is the individual attention that every family receives from Michael and I. Our staff will get to know your family and make every effort to satisfy your child’s needs. Michael: At TAG USA, a parent can actually speak with an owner who will address their questions or concerns.
You considered parents as well as gymnasts when designing your state-of-the-art 38,000 square foot facility. What unique features did you incorporate? Marissa: What’s most

unique about TAG USA is the amount of training space within the gym. Neither our class or team athletes have to wait in lines or share equipment with groups. There is

cover story facility is clean and always smells good. Parents always have a clear view and comfortable seat in the viewing area.
You recently added new air conditioning to the gym, what other changes have you made? Marissa:
Everyone knows that there are always changes and something new at TAG and we continue to add and improve our Weston facility. We opened a large bar pit for our optional athletes and added a second trampoline for our Tramp and Tumbling Team. We just completed an indoor basketball/soccer court for summer camp and created a new Trampoline Jump Zone for moms and their younger kids to enjoy. We also opened a game room that will be used for birthday parties and Saturday Night Open Gym.
Anything else you would like to add? Michael: Although
Marissa and I have only owned TAG USA Gymnastics for a short time, we are successful because we give our families an amazing facility, great customer service and a championship program.
a lot of space and new equipment for all recreational classes and also separate equipment for our boys, girls, optionals and tramp teams. Our programs have more training and less waiting which allows for better workouts and success. Michael: Children at TAG use new equipment in a spacious gym. The
TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions. For advanced students there is a competitive gymnastics team, cheer team, and a trampoline and tumbling squad. Performing Arts Camp Debuts in Davie By Debby Teich
R
esidents in the Davie area no longer have to travel east for
the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Summer Theatre Camp. This summer, The Performance Project and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts are teaming up to provide the ultimate theatrical experience for children, ages 6 to 18, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. “It is the perfect venue,” said Nina Felice, Executive Director of the Performance Project School of the Arts. “It has a large space and a small stage for rehearsals.” From July 16 to August 10, campers will get an introduction into the world of theater, both onstage and behindthe-scenes. They will also attend master classes with professionals in the industry. The experience will culminate with the performance of a live Broadway-style show at the Broward Center for the Photos by Ian Ibbetson Performing Arts. “The camp exposes the children to the arts, while emphasizing teamwork and camaraderie,” said Felice. “The children also make lasting friendships.” In Acting Up, campers ages 6 to 9 participate in beginning levels of acting, singing, dance (tap, jazz, ballet) and technical production/crafts. The children work in-depth on a solo scene or song. At the end of the four weeks, they will perform “Free To Be...You And Me,” written by Marlo Thomas. This musical revue show has all young
actors performing during most of the show as they convey the moral of the story line… inventing your own future without limitations. All of the campers will have their own featured part. Broadway Bound is for campers, ages 10 to 13, who are at a higher artistic level in the performing arts. They will participate in intermediate levels of acting, singing, dance (tap, jazz, ballet) and technical production. They will also perform “Peter Pan,” which is one the most celebrated musicals and beloved fairy tales. The production comes complete with pirates, Indians and fairies. Some of the campers will even get a chance to fly. Company Group campers, ages 13 to 18, will have the opportunity to earn community service hours by assisting younger campers. They will learn at more advanced levels as they study voice and diction, character analysis, scene study, dialects, styles and methods. At the end of the session, these campers will perform “A Chorus Line,” which paints a true picture of the real-life struggles and celebrations of the theater actor. Camp is held Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4pm. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Road, in Davie. For information, visit camp.browardcenter.org or call 954-462-0222.

Visit with Barbie at the Old Davie School Museum By Debby Teich
F
or more than 50 years, Barbie has been a cultural icon. She
has evolved with the times and kept up with the latest trends. She has a universal appeal and collectors of all ages enjoy time spent and memories made with their dolls. On July 21, from 2 to 4pm, the public is invited to share tea and tapas with Barbie and her friends, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. The tables will be set with fine linens and china, as guests of all ages enjoy tea, sandwiches, cakes and other refreshments. There will be a Barbie movie, games, and special Barbie prizes. Eight different Barbies will pose for photos and sign autographs, including President Barbie, created in partnership with the White House Project to encourage more women to get involved in politics. “The kids get so excited to go up to someone who looks like Barbie,” said Executive Director Leslie Schroeder. Ten-year-old Kaitlin Sanders of Davie plans to attend. She has more than 20 Barbie dolls in her collection. Most weekends, she and her friends get together and play with their dolls for hours at a time. “I just love playing with Barbie,” said Kaitlin. “She is smart and beautiful. When I play with Barbie, I can be anything I want to be. I can’t wait to see her in person.” Barbie will be posing for photos and Barbie is not just for kids. Jacqueline Binns is thrilled with her new commute. “The 595 Express Bus is beyond what I expected,” said Binns, who lives in Weston and works in downtown Fort Lauderdale. “Driving more than 50 miles a day adds up. With the 595 Express Bus I not only save money on gas, parking, and car expenses, but I can also get a jumpstart on my work day using the free Wi-Fi.” Funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with services provided by Broward County Transit (BCT), the 595 Express Bus runs every 30 minutes on weekday mornings and afternoons. The fleet is comprised of new 42-foot hybrid buses equipped with free WiFi and 12-volt power outlets for charging electronic communication equipment. “Think of the 595 Express Bus as the ultimate hands-free device,” said Jeremy Mullings, FDOT Project Manager. “Instead of fighting traffic, commuters can now spend their time how they’d like: surfing the net, catching up on emails or simply relaxing. And, with the cost of commuting as high as it is, riding the 595 Express Bus has never made more sense for residents commuting from Western Broward.” 595 Express Bus fares are $2.35 for a one-way adult fare to downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale. BCT is also offering a Premium 31-Day Bus Pass for $85 that includes unlimited rides on both express and regular bus service and a Premium 10-Ride Bus Pass at a cost of $23.50. She will be honored in October at the Florida Council for the Social Studies 55th annual conference in Orlando. “There are so many wonderful teachers in Broward County,” said Swanton. “I am proud to have been selected by my peers to represent all of them.” Swanton, who teaches world geography and civics at Indian Ridge Middle School, Swanton was named Broward is passionate about her job. “Every day, I Tina County Social Studies Middle have the opportunity to teach my students School Teacher of the Year something that they do not know,” said Swanton. “It is so rewarding to watch them learn new things. I love my job!” Swanton constantly challenges her students to scrutinize what they hear others say and to use what is learned to establish their own ideas and opinions. She often uses a unique hands-on approach, as well as special projects and field trips to help teach the material. “In my experience, students demonstrate longer-lasting retention and deeper understanding of information when they connect what they have learned to real-life experiences,” said Swanton. This past year, students participated in a mock trial. Swanton was one of 25 teachers selected to attend a Florida Supreme Court mock trial simulation through the Supreme Court of Florida Justice Teaching Institute. It was such a positive experience that she decided to implement it in her own classroom. The students analyzed primary source documents and then constructed their own government, constitution and country. As an attorney or a justice, they also prepared and performed an oral argument for a search and seizure case that is currently in front of the Florida Supreme Court. They are now anxiously awaiting the official ruling. “It is important for students to understand how their actions and opinions affect others as citizens of their local community and

They came up with the idea to reach out to vendors and businesses to help them stock the school store. This would allow them to boost their profits from sales. In the fall, they would use the proceeds to help fill backpacks with supplies for some of the children. They presented the proposal to the principal and school PTA and are in the process of working out a plan. “We are hoping to reach

As part of the curriculum, Swanton also teaches her students about citizenship. “I wanted the students to truly understand what it takes to become a citizen, as well as their responsibility to be good citizens,” said Swanton. She thought the best way to accomplish this would be to take them on a field trip to Miami to see a Naturalization

They created a poster board replica of a Facebook page of an influential African American during Black History month, participated in a campus clean-up as part of an Earth Day project, debated a fair way to distrubute resources in the Amazon Rainforest, wrote a persuasive paper and speech to determine a site for a future ficticious world game competition, engaged in a role play activity as members of the Caste system, took a field trip to the Renaissance festival and much more.

Tips for Beating the Bank in Foreclosure Proceedings By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
F
rom December 2007 to present, South Florida has experienced
a 400 percent increase in foreclosure filings, and more than one fourth of all mortgages in the United States right now are at least 60 days past due. In view of these staggering statistics, most homeowners simply give up the fight for their home before it even begins. However, a foreclosure lawsuit is just like any other lawsuit – the lender must prove its entire case before it can obtain a judgment. Just because you’ve been served with foreclosure papers does not mean you have to leave your home! The legal foreclosure process can take two years or more if the borrower is able to identify and present valid defenses to the foreclosure. Here are some suggestions on how to use foreclosure proceedings to your advantage, and possibly “beat the bank.”
Conduct a Forensic Audit of Your Loan First of all, perform a detailed audit of your loan transaction through a qualified mortgage auditing firm. A forensic audit often reveals serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by the same lenders that initiate foreclosure proceedings. An audit may also reveal fatal flaws in the transfer of your mortgage. If you don’t know a reputable mortgage audit firm in your area, please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 or www.arcialawfirm.com, and we will gladly point you in the right direction. File a Counterclaim Against Your Lender Using the results of your forensic audit, and assuming you have identified violations of law in connection with your loan, you should file a counterclaim against your lender for those same violations. In other words, sue your lender within the same proceedings as a means to gain negotiating leverage and improve your mortgage terms. In some cases, borrowers have been able to obtain a cancellation of the mortgage altogether by taking the offensive in a foreclosure proceeding.
FREE DVD
Demand the Original Note Most foreclosure proceedings are not initiated by the original lender, but rather by a party who claims to “own and hold” the Note securing payment of the loan. Surprisingly, many of these third parties don’t actually have possession of the original note, or the right to enforce the obligation. The Note is a negotiable instrument, like a bank check. Do you know any bank that will cash a “copy” of any check? Likewise, no Court will decide a foreclosure proceeding based upon a “copy” of your Note. If you demand the original Note, and the lender is unable to produce it, a foreclosure judgment cannot legally be obtained. Challenge Your Lender’s Right to Bring the Foreclosure Proceeding In most cases, your original lender did not formally assign or endorse the Note to the new entity. Florida law only permits an action to be presented by the “real party in interest.” If you never signed an agreement with the party that filed the foreclosure, you can challenge their right to file the foreclosure proceedings altogether. Judges will not hesitate to dismiss a foreclosure proceeding initiated by a company that has no legal right to bring the action. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 for a free consultation, or at www.arcialawfirm.com. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

convenience, but they can compromise your safety. A motivated criminal only has to keep watch on an ATM for a short time to scope out the availability of a potential victim. As consumers, I remind you to always be cautious of your surroundings and conduct your business only in areas where you feel comfortable. Due to the availability of surveillance cameras, ATMs at banks are typically the safest option, but that does not mean you have to steer clear of the ones at shopping malls, airports and sports venues. When you need to get cash, be sure to plan ahead before making an ATM withdrawal. If possible, always have someone with you. There are several safety tips you should follow to avoid becoming a victim at an ATM:

▸▸ Always be aware of your surroundings when using an ATM. If you notice someone or something suspicious, do not stop to use it! Go to another ATM or return at a later time. ▸▸ Avoid using an ATM after dark. If you must, do so only in a well-lit area. Be mindful of tall or overgrown shrubbery and vegetation in the area. ▸▸ Have your ATM card and any other documents you need ready when you approach an ATM. Fumbling with your wallet or purse makes you an easy target for thieves. ▸▸ When you use a drive-up ATM, be sure your passenger windows are closed and all doors are locked. ▸▸ If you are using an enclosed ATM, be sure the door completely closes and locks behind you. Do not allow anyone to enter while you are making your transaction. Authorized bank customers will have their own access (not holding the door for someone entering a secure area is not rude; it is safe). ▸▸ When entering your Personal Identification Number (PIN), use your hand or body to shield the screen or keypad. Never give your PIN to another; this is the leading cause of theft. ▸▸ When your transaction is finished, be sure you put your card, cash and receipt away before leaving the area. ▸▸ Do not display or count large amounts of cash in front of the ATM. Count your cash in the safety of your home or locked vehicle. ▸▸ If you are threatened for your money or your card by a thief, do not fight. Cash and cards are replaceable; your life is not. ▸▸ If at any time you need emergency assistance, do not hesitate to call 911. As a reminder, the Broward Sheriff’s Office offers a free document shredding program to the public on the second Saturday of every month. Stay safe! For more information about our Shred-A-Thon program, or to download a copy of the upcoming schedule, please visit www.sheriff.org.

hen couples who have minor children are
divorced, summer vacation can present new problems. Because school is not in session, the normal time sharing arrangement that has been working all year (hopefully), may no longer be viable. For instance, a couple who during the school year picks up and drops of the children at school can no longer follow that schedule. Will the schedule remain the same or do the parties follow a different plan for the summer? Is their a provision for extended time so each of the parents can take the children on a vacation for a week or more? Are the parents both living locally or is there a provision which requires the children to spend part or all of the summer with the parent who is living in another part of the country? Can the children leave the area and visit family such as aunts, uncles or grandparents? Can the parents agree on a camp program and who will pay for it? The above are just some of the issues which seem to surface each summer. The best way to avoid these issues is to make sure they are addressed in any marital settlement agreement or Parenting Plan that is being entered into. It is much easier to agree on these issues during the negotiations rather than have to petition the court after the divorce is final and request a change or a modification. Think ahead and more importantly think of what’s best for the children. I have known parents to try and prevent a child from taking a trip, whether it is Disney World or Europe, for what I would consider to be selfish reasons. If it’s a trip which will benefit the children, shouldn’t that be the primary concern of any decision. It is also important to be flexible. Don’t try and punish your former spouse by, in essence, punishing the children. If you want some flexibility in your schedule, be receptive to the other parent’s request. Make sure to communicate your plans to the other parent. Include dates and methods of travel, destinations and places where you will be staying. When entering into a settlement, include a date when each parent will be required to advise the other parent about their intended travel. Don’t wait for the last minute or there may be a scheduling conflict. If the agreement requires written permission from the other parent to travel out of the country (a somewhat common provision), don’t wait until the trip is imminent to request this permission. If court intervention is necessary, it could take several weeks or months to schedule a hearing. Remember, summer is a popular time for court personnel and attorneys to plan vacations as well. If your judge is away or if opposing counsel is out of town it will be difficult to schedule a hearing. Unfortunately, an emergency to you may not be an emergency to the court. The most important thing to consider is that your kids have worked hard all year and look forward to a summer vacation. Don’t cause them unnecessary stress. Let them enjoy themselves. They won’t get to enjoy a summer vacation for long. If you have any questions, contact my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

T
he number of women who exercise during preg-
nancy has increased dramatically over the years. Due to the varied goals and objectives of pregnant woman, “one size” will not fit all when it comes to prenatal exercise programs. Early guidelines in 1985 were written from the perspective of “first does no harm” and were extremely conservative. These guidelines were challenged in the exercise science community and by women who worked out vigorously during their pregnancy with no ill effect. Research has shown that women who exercise during pregnancy experience fewer common prenatal discomforts such as constipation, swollen extremities, leg cramps, nausea, varicose veins, insomnia, fatigue, back pain and orthopedic conditions. Additionally, exercise can improve posture and body mechanics, reduce pelvic and rectal pressure and increase energy levels. Fit pregnant women have a lower resting heart rate, lower weight gain and have shown to have a more stabilized mood. Active pregnant women experience fewer feelings of stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression (American College Sports Medicine 2006). Benefits during Labor Some studies show exercise has no effect on course of labor and delivery, while others show that exercise causes either shorter or longer labors. These differences might be due to data collected. A study by Clapp (1998) showed women who continued weight bearing exercise through pregnancy had fewer problems in delivery and a 75% decrease in the need for forceps or Caesarean. He also found a 30% shorter delivery time. The women who stopped exercising did not experience the above. Another study found non exercising women were 4 ½ times more likely to have a caesarean (Begum 200). At Ellen’s Ultimate Workout, we recommend that you continue exercising until near term (barring any medical reasons). We actually have special pregnancy cushions to aide our clients in their Pilates workouts. Benefits during Pregnancy Exercise during pregnancy promotes a faster recovery. Women who exercise during pregnancy return to normal life 40% faster than those who don’t (Clapp 1998). Fit women recover faster, because of their greater energy reserves. Exercising women also experience fewer incidences of postpartum depression. The type of exercise one should do varies. One should avoid any activity that has potential to impact abdominal trauma. Also, activity with balance, or agility would be ill advised (i.e. gymnastics, downhill skiing). Cardiovascular exercise is recommended in a range from mild to moderate in exertion, yet highly trained women will work harder. Attitudes about exercise during pregnancy have changed dramatically over the past 10-20 years. The stereotype that pregnancy is a time of “fragility” and “weakness” is long gone. Some pregnant women have medical risks set forth by a physician that prevent them from participating in a full blown exercise program. But if you are healthy and active, with proper guidance you can soar through your pregnancy and enjoy this special experience. For pregnancy exercise advice, call Ellen Latham M.S. at 954-472-9440 or visit EllensUltimateWorkout.com. Ellen owns Ellen’s Ultimate Workout Studio, 5173 S. University Dr. in Davie. Where Is Our Inventory? By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-pro, SFR, CLHMS
I
have been continuously studying our local market’s
activities over the past five months and it is evident that we are on the road to recovery. Recently, I personally experienced multiple bids on my listings. Because of the lack of inventory, buyers are more willing to pay above asking price – and above appraised value. My colleague recently received an offer over and above asking price for CASH – to close in less than thirty days. That home was on the market for three days. She also received two other similar bids; however, those bids involved financing. Again, these are challenging times for those in my profession. We have multiple metrics to help us derive a list price for a home. Because of our low inventory, we have fewer properties that become “relevant” to your subject property – creating even bigger challenges for pricing. Here is the current inventory graph for Davie. Note how the pending sales indicator (the red line) is steadily increasing and how inventory (the light green bar) is decreasing.

wFor Cooper City, the picture is pretty much the same. The pending sales indicator is really elevated. There is not enough inventory today to satisfy the number of buyers. Five to six months of inventory is a balanced market. Over seven months of inventory is indicative of a buyer’s market. This is the time to buy. Did you know that according to the National Cooper City Association of Realtors, year after year, sales are up 10% and interest rates have dropped 9%? Did you also know that because of our historically low interest rates, an $85,000 home in 1984 cost you more than a $226,000 home today according to the experts. There is so much confusion in our marketplace and pricing a home is still a challenge. If you are thinking of buying or selling, it is imperative to contact an expert in the industry and one who is most familiar with the area. If you would like a detailed property report, please contact me at Horton.z@ewm. com, and I will send your report within twenty-four hours. You can visit my website at www.zonahorton.com to search properties in all of Broward County. You can even perform a search in one of thirteen different languages. I look forward to working with you on your home sale, purchase or lease.

Confucio Express Brings Gourmet Chinese Cuisine to West Broward By Stacey Bomser
W
hen you think of authentic Chinese cuisine you probably
don’t think of Colombia, but that is exactly where West Broward’s newest Chinese restaurant hails from. Confucio Express is a modern twist on Jardines de Confucio, a famous fine dining restaurant in Barranquilla, Atlantico, Colombia. Using the same recipes, Confucio Express delivers gourmet Chinese cuisine in a casual dining atmosphere. The restaurant has earned rave reviews at its Miami locations and is a welcome addition to the West Broward restaurant scene. Giovanny Visbal, Business Development Manager of the Confucio Express Brand, shared the restaurant’s rich history and some of his favorite menu selections.
What is Confucio Express? Confucio
Confucio Express Owner/ Manager Jose Correa (left) and Owner/Manager/Project Developer Giovanny Visbal.
Express serves gourmet Chinese cuisine with a Latin influence. It comes from a very famous fine dining restaurant in Colombia called Jardines de Confucio (Confucius Garden) that has been in business for over 30 years. It was founded by our partner’s father, Mr. Jose Choi, one of the most famous Chinese chefs in Colombia. We refreshed his concept to meet the new trend in the restaurant industry of casual dining. We created a fresh concept with a modern eclectic image and express service which we call Confucio Express, so you can enjoy a fine dining experience with take-out prices. Confucio Express is named after the Chinese philosopher Confucius.
Why did Confucio Express choose West Broward for its first location outside of Miami-Dade? We are very excited to open in this area. It fits
our target perfectly because there is a diversity of people from many parts of the world and a high population of Latin American immigrants who are lovers of our food. Also, the location we chose next to the Weston 8 Cinema will let us serve a good part of Davie, Sunrise and Weston.
What is Chinese gourmet cuisine? Our recipes came from a fine dining restaurant and are very unique and delicious. Everything is made from scratch when you place the order. Because of that we call ourselves the best Chinese Gourmet Cuisine.
Can diners order to taste? Of course! Because we make everything at the moment, we can create any dish the way you want it. Remember, we are gourmet Chinese...food you will fall in love with!
Does your chef have any special training?
Our chefs are taught in-house by our main chef Jose Choi who created our menu with his expertise from the fine dining restaurant in Colombia. He has 40 years of experience.
Do you offer any specials? Our Lunch
Specials are good enough for two people. The cost is just $9.29 and you have 23 options to choose from. That makes our restaurant an amazing dining experience for any budget!
Do you deliver? That is our specialty. Our dishes will arrive at your door 45 minutes from your call. That is our promise: “gourmet Chinese food at your door in a timely manner.” We charge a $3 delivery fee. Anything else you wou ld like our readers to know about Confucio Express?
What are the specialties of the house? Our Confucio Especial Fried Rice
Confucio Express is the best gourmet Chinese food. We don’t say that -- our customers do! We were chosen the best delivery Chinese restaurant in 2010 and 2011 in Brickell and the downtown area. We were called “The new gem at Brickell” in a Miami Herald review and we were recognized by Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado for our contribution to the city.
Is all your food prepared fresh? Do you make your own sauces? All
We are very excited to bring our restaurant to the Davie, Weston, and Sunrise area. We are very sure that Confucio Express will be one of the “New gems in West Broward,” just come and try us!
is one of our most delicious plates. It is prepared with our special secret house sauce that makes it different than any other Chinese fried rice. It comes with plenty of fresh shrimp, barbecue pork, ham, and chicken. We also offer Mongolian Beef and Chicken, Curry Chicken, Shrimp, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Honey Garlic Chicken, and much more.
our food is prepared the moment you place the order. Everything is fresh and made from scratch because we are committed to offering freshness to our customers. That is why our food is different than the traditional Chinese restaurant that makes big amounts of food for the entire day. We make everything in the moment and that gives us the quality that everybody talks about in Brickell, Downtown Miami and the Grove area, and now in West Broward.
