Florida. The days are longer and the extra hours of sunlight give us more time to enjoy all that our community has to offer. From evening strolls and bike rides around the neighborhood to weekend outings to the beach playing in the surf or fishing the azure waters, there is so much to do and enjoy. Spring is also the season of growth. All around us is evidence of new life from the baby ducklings swimming in the neighborhood lake to the flowers blooming in the yard. I am excited to announce that our publication is growing as well. Next month, we will introduce the new Miramar Town Times magazine. It will join our current roster of award-winning, community news magazines serving the communities of Weston, Davie, Cooper City, Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Together, our five magazines will provide locally focused news services to 100,000 households in the Southwest Broward area, reaching an estimated 250,000+ readers. As we continue to grow, we will be able to provide more of the community and school news you have come to expect. Thank you for your continued readership.

Davie Residents to Participate in 16th Annual Waterway Clean-Up By Debby Teich

T

organizations, local families and individuals. Organizers are looking for groups, families, or individual residents to help clean and pick up trash from the canal banks. They are also looking for residents with small boats to clean the canal waters. Check-in for the event begins at 8 a.m., at Davie Town Hall, and the clean-up will last from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Each of the volunteers will be assigned to a small area along the C-11 Canal. In total, they will clean more than eight miles along Orange Drive and Griffin Road, between State Road 7 and Flamingo Rd. In return for their efforts, participants will receive community service hours and a free Waterway T-Shirt or hat. They will also receive a ticket for admittance to the “Trash Splash” pool party, which will be held at Pine Island Park Pool following the clean-up. There will be free food, a DJ and lots of fun. The public awareness campaign seems to be working. In the past, volunteers found many large items, such as cars, refrigerators and air conditioners. Each year, however, they find fewer large items and less trash. Mindy Barker plans to participate in the clean-up with her children. She is very concerned about the environment and wants to do what she can to keep her Town clean. “I am always amazed when I see people littering,” said Barker. “We must preserve the planet for future generations.” Registration is required before April 25. On April 28, several hundred residents are expected to participate in the Town of Davie and Central Broward Water Control District’s 16th Annual Waterway Clean-up. The effort started with a group of volunteers gathering on a Saturday and has grown into a major event involving school clubs, boy and girl scouts, religious and non-profit

Cooper City Mom Makes Reading Fun for Kids By Debby Teich

J

ulie Landry Laviolette has always

been an avid reader. When the Cooper City mom of two noticed that most young children did not share her passion, she decided to take action. She recently introduced Brush of Truth, an interactive children’s book designed to engage kids in reading. She came up with the idea for the book at her son’s fifth-grade graduation luncheon last year. She had been writing for local newspapers and parenting publications for nearly 20 years and wanted to apply her skills to something new. When she started talking to a dad, who happened to be a software developer, she knew that she had found Julie Landry Laviolette, with her the perfect partner. They decided to combine her interactive book apps for kids. expertise in writing and his in coding to develop a reading app for children. “We know that kids love the visual enhancements on their phones, IPads and other high-tech devices,” said Julie. “We wanted to use the magic of technology to encourage them to read in a way that fits their generation. It is like sneaking veggies into their food.” They partners discovered that there were some interactive books on the market for very young children, but there were few targeted to children 8 to 12 years old. They agreed to develop an interactive reading app that would take the e-book concept to the next level and allow kids that age to read in a digital format - the format of the future. The Story Bayou (a play on “Story By You”) series, written in second person, allows

the reader to choose how the action proceeds during critical points in the story. “There are multiple paths and endings, adding suspense to the stories,” said Julie. “The reader faces challenges, solves riddles, investigates mysteries, meets curious characters and explores thrilling new places. Decisions may lead to a desperate end or a glorious victory. At the end, the reader can return to the beginning to make different choices and explore new paths.” In the first book app, Brush with Truth, two tweens find a medieval sorcerer’s magical paintbrush and experiment with its powers. It has 65 decision points and 20 possible endings that lead kids on adventures under the sea, in floating

graveyards and inside sand castles. The book has been an instant success. Julie shared the book with an enthusiastic 4th-grade class at Beth Emet Elementary School in Cooper City. She sold 50 copies off of Facebook in the first few days of the introduction and has several inquiries from teachers who want to use the book in the classroom. She has already started working on her second book. “Kids love the idea because they like being in charge,” Julie said. “Parents love the concept because they can hand a smartphone to their child, who can then read instead of playing another video game.” For information, visit www.storybayou.com. The stories are available on iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, Android and Windows mobile devices for $1.99.

Live Life to the Fullest! Find Out How to Regain Your Youthful Vitality

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging

By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

Y

ou don’t have to live with the symptoms any-

more! Are you tired all the time? Do you lack sexual desire? Are you depressed or can’t focus. Have you experienced hot flashes or gained weight? All of these symptoms listed can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. You can correct these symptoms by simply replacing your body’s deficient hormones. Unfortunately, in 1991 shock waves were sent through our society when the Women’s Health Care Initiative Study was halted prematurely due to a slight increase in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease from women who were taking oral conjugated estrogen (estrogen derived from pregnant horse urine, such as Premarin). Society reached the conclusion that all hormones caused the same problem. This simply is not true. Bio-identical hormones are not the same. They are identical to that which the body produces. They do not cause any of the problems that estrogen derived from horse urine may cause. In addition, there have been many research papers published in respected international journals documenting the beneficial effects of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy, since the 1930’s. Pharmaceutical companies are unable to manufacture and sell these naturally occurring hormones. As a result, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has been ignored, because of the political agendas of pharmaceutical companies in the United States. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy can be delivered in many ways, such as pills, patches, creams, injections and pellets. The most physiologic way of administration is via pellet therapy, because the hormone levels are maintained constantly without the peaks and troughs seen with the other methods. Pellet therapy is delivered by placing the hormones directly under the skin, allowing the body to access the hormones constantly whenever the body is in need. This convenient method allows delivery of hormones for 3-6 months, without having to remember to take a daily pills or possibly having skin irritation from creams and patches. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy can help both men and women achieve the natural healthy balance of hormones their bodies need to maintain optimum well-being. Some of the benefits of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy include: ▸▸ Enhancement of libido and/or increased sexual desire ▸▸ Reduced fatigue and increased energy levels ▸▸ Relief from anxiety and depression ▸▸ Consistency in moods (reduction in feelings of anger, nervousness and irritability) ▸▸ Increased energy, focus, mental clarity and concentration ▸▸ Improved memory ▸▸ An increase in lean body mass and a decrease in body fat In addition to these symptoms of overall well-being, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has been shown to decrease cholesterol, increase bone density and possibly offer increased protection against breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy is initiated only after a complete medical history and specific laboratory testing to evaluate deficiencies in hormones, such as the thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone to name a few. Depending on the results of the laboratory testing, medical history and symptoms, the appropriate hormone and delivery method is chosen. After 2 weeks, most clients are stating, “I feel wonderful” or “My husband thanks you for bringing me back to him.” You simply don’t have to live with the symptoms anymore! Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, Sottopelle Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and IV Nutrition Therapy. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Davie Voters Re-elect Paul and Caletka By Debby Teich

O

n March 13, Davie residents voted to keep Mayor Judy Paul

and Councilman Bryan Caletka in office. Both incumbents beat their opponents by a wide margin. In the Mayoral race, Judy Paul defeated Mike Crowley, the director of the Central Broward Water Control District. Paul received 3,797 votes, or 61.2 percent, while Crowley took 2,407 votes, or 38.8 percent. A retired teacher, Paul began serving the Town of Davie in 1998 as the Council Member for District 4. In 2007 after serving three terms, she took a two year hiatus while remaining active in the community. In March 2009, she defeated Tom Truex and was sworn in as the Town’s new mayor. Paul is proud of many of her accomplishments as Mayor, such as balancing the budget without raising taxes, keeping people employed while many other communities were laying people off, maintaining community services, improving opportunities for new businesses to open and much more. In her next term, she plans to continue many of her environmentally friendly initiatives, as well as youth and senior programs. She also wants to improve the conditions of the roads and continue to keep taxes and fees low. “I am looking forward to serving the residents for three more years,” said Mayor Paul. In the race for the District 1 seat, which comprises the northeastern part of the town, Bryan Caletka, teacher, defeated Jim Moore, an insurance agent. Caletka received 896 votes to Moore’s 549. This will be Caletka’s third term on the Town Council. He was first elected to the Davie Town Council in March of 2006 and became a voice of prudence for the Town’s budget and Davie’s Fire Assessment tax. Davie residents

Davie Student Leads Effort to Package 100,000 Meals By Debby Teich

A

nthony Segreto of Davie is making life a little better

for more than 100,000 residents of Haiti and Uganda. The senior at Archbishop McCarthy High School, in Southwest Ranches, recently planned a school-wide event to send them nutritionally balanced meals. It all started two years ago, when Anthony learned about Feeding Children Everywhere (FCE) at a leadership conference. The nonprofit organization mobilizes others to set up food packing events in an effort to help fight world hunger and stop malnutrition. The students at the conference packaged approximately 5,000 meals made with rice, protein, vegetables, vitamins and minerals. The meals are scientifically formulated to combat the effects of hunger on the human body. “There are so many hungry people in third world countries,” said Anthony. “It was very empowering to feed so many of them in such a short time. I wanted the students at Archbishop McCarthy to experience it.” Anthony set a goal to assemble 100,000 meals in a single school day. Since each meal costs twenty-five cents, the first step was to raise enough money to fund the project. In November, he sent letters to corporations and local businesses to begin soliciting money. “Once most people found out that $10 would feed 40 people, they were eager to help make an impact on world hunger,” said Anthony. In only three months, he raised the $25,000 needed to purchase the supplies. On February 23, FCE delivered 12,000 pounds of raw food to AMHS and helped Anthony set up 13 assembly lines in the gym. Throughout the school day, as part of Theology class, the entire student body visited the gym to participate in the assembly line meal packaging process. They scooped each of the ingredients into a bag and sealed it. By 2 p.m., 100,224 meals were packaged, boxed up and ready to be sent to third world countries. “Hunger and malnutrition are two different issues and these meals address both,” said Anthony. “Now there will be 100,224 hungry people receiving immediate assistance.” Anthony says that the project required a tremendous amount of hard work, but it was all worth it. He is also quick to point out that it was a team effort. “It was such an incredible experience,” said Anthony. “I was just a conduit. All of the credit goes to FCE, the donors, and the students who packed the food.” Anthony hopes to repeat the event at whatever college he ends up attending this fall. He plans to step up his efforts quite a bit, however, and has set a new goal of 1 million meals. For information on Feeding Children Everywhere, visit www.feedingchildreneverywhere.com.

Funies Foundation to Host Kentucky Derby Charity Event By Debby Teich

T

adults and children with special needs to a world where disabilities can fade away, even if it is just for a short time. It inspires self-confidence, responsibility and teamwork. Since 2008, the Funies Foundation has used equine and hippo-therapy to help integrate, educate and instruct special children. On May 5, the nonprofit organization, located at Arbor Hill Stables in Southwest Ranches, will host the 1st Annual Kentucky Derby Charity Event at Weston Hills Country Club. It includes dinner and open bar, as well as a band, hat contest, silent auction and live viewing of the138th Kentucky Derby. Proceeds will benefit the special children at the Arbor Hill Stables, as well as Easter Seals of South Florida. Luis and Linda Bustamante founded the Funies Foundation for their 16-year-old daughter Mariale, who has Down syndrome. Through the organization, they have provided Mariale and many others with experiences that encourage independence and help prepare them for adult life. “We believe that most special needs children are capable of doing almost anything and we just have to find a way to teach them,’ said Linda. “We want other parents and kids to know that it is possible for special needs children to live a regular life in our society.”

The equestrian center provides equine therapeutic riding lessons and hippo therapy under the direction of professionals to help those with Autism, Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, developmental delays, head injuries, strokes and other special needs. When the kids arrive, they spend time in a learning center, where they work on social and developmental skills. Afterwards, they are rewarded with the riding program, which reinforces the skills they just learned. Throughout the year, they can participate in two horse shows, the Special Olympics Broward County and several other special events. On Halloween, the kids come dressed in costumes and get to paint a pony. For Christmas, they can attend a dinner party and participate in a gift exchange. The Foundation also offers summer camp. Many of the children in the program do not have special needs. They include kids like 12-year-old Sophia Rivera, who rides at the stable and volunteers to help those with special needs. “Sophia has developed incredible friendships,” said her father Michael Rivera, who is also on the Board of Directors. “It is a wonderful feeling to see them talking and laughing together.”

POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi Sets New Standards By Stacey Bomser

C

an’t decide what to eat for dinner? Then head to POC American

Fusion Buffet & Sushi in Weston. This gourmet, buffet-style restaurant serves the freshest sushi around, plus an extensive menu of perfectly prepared dishes from around the world. This is definitely not your typical buffet restaurant. “We are setting a new standard,” states Will Lin, owner of POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi. “Our style of food is called American-fusion. Think American, Asian and Continental cuisine prepared by culinary artists who really care about creating an unforgettable dining experience for you.” No where is that more evident than in the restaurant’s carefully crafted sushi. The sushi buffet features over 30 selections of sushi, sashimi and skillfully prepared rolls, all created by master sushi chef Kevin Z, who comes to POC from the famed Nobu and Sushi Samba. While the selection varies daily, depending upon what fresh fish is available, POC features several specialty rolls always on the menu. Will recommends the House Roll with eel, avocado and tuna on the inside and tuna, salmon, whitefish and avocado on the outside. Chef Kevin Z’s culinary creativity is further evident in rolls such as the Las Vegas Roll with unagi, cream cheese, salmon, avocado and masago, and the Caribbean Roll with salmon, lettuce, avocado, cucumber and pickles. There are also plenty of picks for non fish eaters, including the Tempura Roll with sweet potato, carrot, green bean and squash. Once you’ve had your fill of sushi, grab a fresh plate, or two, and head for the buffet. There are about 25 items on the hot bar including POC’s infamous Grand Marnier Shrimp. Other Asian-inspired items include POC fried rice, sesame chicken, shrimp tempura, steak-wrapped asparagus, and much more. On weekend nights, the buffet features gourmet dishes such as Filet Carpaccio and Tempura Crusted Grouper. The cold bar offers fresh seafood selections including Alaskan Snow Crab legs, cocktail

shrimp, oysters and mussels, as well as a small salad bar. On top of all the wonderful buffet items, POC offers cooked-to-order Japanesestyle hibachi. Choices include New York strip steak, chicken breast, shrimp or scallops. Between the sushi selection and gourmet buffet, the choices are endless. According to Will, “You could eat at POC every day and never have the same meal twice.” Regardless of what you pick, you know it is always fresh. “We are constantly changing out the food and sushi on the buffet. Nothing sits for long. Of course, our food is so good, the serving plate is usually empty long before then,” jokes Will. Be sure to save room for dessert. POC offers a delicious array of tasty treats including homemade Crème Brulee, plus cookies, brownies and assorted flavors of ice cream. There is also a selection of fresh fruit. With its diverse menu and delicious food, it’s easy to see why diners rave about POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi. It was voted best sushi restaurant in the Davie Town Times 2011 Readers’ Choice. It is consistently voted best buffet restaurant and best sushi restaurant in the Miami and Broward area according to UrbanSpoon.com. Zagat magazine, the authority on restaurant reviews and rankings, has stated “There is no better Asian buffet.” POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi is open daily. The lunch buffet is $11.95 Monday through Friday and $12.95 on weekends. The dinner buffet is $18.95 Monday through Thursday and $19.95 Friday through Sunday. On holidays, the lunch buffet is $12.50 and the dinner buffet is $19.95. The restaurant offers special pricing for children. POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi is worth the drive to Weston. It is located at 1651 Bonaventure Boulevard, next to Walgreens near Weston Town Center. To book a private party or to make a reservation for parties of six or more, call (954) 3895188. There is also a location in Coral Gables at 2121 Ponce De Leon Boulevard in the Bank Atlantic Building. To make a reservation call (305) 529-0882. Amateur Boxer Competes for National Title By Debby Teich

J

eff “Rambo” Souffrant is quickly

making a name for himself as an amateur boxer and hopes to become a professional. This month, he will compete in a national tournament, which could put him well on his way to achieving his dream. He plans to bring the championship belt back to Davie, where he trains. Life has not always been easy for the 22-yearold Haitian American. He has spent most of his life living in poverty and was even homeless for a short time. He was kicked out of a number of schools, all the way up to high school. Many of the offenses were due to a violent temper that led to physical altercations. After an arrest, a judge suggested that he get involved in boxing to help redirect his anger. Jeff took the judge’s advice and enrolled in the Pembroke Pines PAL boxing program, where he met trainer Leo Tobares. “Leo promised me that I would win a trophy if I worked hard,” said Jeff. “I had never won anything in my life.” With the support of his family and friends, Jeff spent two years training. He was determined to win and he did. Once he started competing, he could not stop. His current record is 30 fights, 27 wins, 3 losses and 5 knockouts. In 2009, Jeff won his first state title. He recently won his fourth state title at the 2012 Florida Golden Gloves Championship. This month, he will represent Florida in the Golden Gloves National Tournament in Nevada. If he

wins, he will have an opportunity to compete for a spot on the U.S Olympic team. For the past 18 months, Jeff has been training six hours a day at Sweatbox Boxing & Fitness in Davie. Since he does not own a car, he relies on public transportation or friends to get him to the gym. Javiel Centeno, who owns the facility and has been one of Jeff’s trainers, says that he knew there was something special about Jeff from the moment they met. “I have been working with amateur fighters for 12 years and it is rare that I see someone with his ability and talent,” said Javiel. “He has all of the makings to be a premiere professional boxer. It does not matter how big his opponent is, he finds a way to win. He is so humble and a pleasure to be around.” If Jeff does achieve the worldwide notoriety he is hoping for, he plans to use his fame to help others around the world. He wants open sports facilities in Haiti, and in other underdeveloped countries, to give them the same opportunities he has had. He is also hoping that South Florida tourists will want to visit Sweat Box to see where he trained. “When I am in the ring fighting, I am alone,” said Jeff. “Outside the ring, it is a different story. I am grateful to the people who have trained and pushed me. Without them, I would not be the athlete I am. I owe them so much.”

Davie Announces Fire Prevention Contest Winners By Debby Teich

F

or 15 years, the Town of Davie has sponsored a contest dur-

ing Fire Prevention Month, which commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade, from 11 different schools, participated in the contest. Approximately 120 entries were submitted, resulting in 35 first place winners, 16 second place winners and 10 third place winners. The theme for the contest was “Protect Your Family from Fire”. Students in kindergarten through third grade made posters/drawings to represent the theme, while fourth and fifth grade students wrote a poem or essay. Teachers selected one first place winner from each class and the 2nd and 3rd place winners were judged by the Davie Fire Rescue Fire Prevention Bureau. The winning posters were displayed at the Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center. The winners, as well as their parents and teachers, were invited to participate in an awards presentation ceremony. “As the children work on their submittals at home with their families, it not only introduces the dangers of fire to the children at a very young age, but reminds them of actions they need to take to make their home as fire safe as possible,” said Chief Fire Marshal Anthony Precanico. “In addition, the family can talk about planning escape routes and meeting places should fire break out in their homes.”

Davie Residents Trained to Respond in a Disaster by Debby Teich

urricanes, tornadoes, plane crashes and building collapses,

the possibility of further damage to property. The first Davie CERT training program was implemented in 2009. Approximately 170 Davie men, women and teens, ages 18-85, are members of the team. In order to qualify, team members must be over 18 years old and live or work in the Town of Davie. The initial training consists of approximately 20 hours of free classes. When the residents graduate, they receive a backpack, which includes triage supplies like masks, gauze, splints, gloves, scissors and other items. “It is nice to know that Davie has CERT team members who are trained and ready to help if we are not able to respond during a disaster,” said Assistant Chief Julie Downey. The team meets bi-monthly to reinforce their training and learn additional skills. Some of the topics have included search and rescue, pet CPR, hurricane preparedness and fire fighter rehabilitation. Although Davie’s CERT has not had to respond to a true emergency, the team has participated in mass casualty drills, helped out at the Orange Blossom Parade, handed out safety brochures and more.

as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Davie were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for emergency personnel to reach everyone in need. A group of Davie residents is trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families and neighbors until the proper help arrives. They are members of Davie’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) team. On April 10, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the Davie Fire Rescue Department will begin a new training course for anyone interested in joining the team. CERT is a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT members use the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace. They are able to provide basic care that will help limit further injury to disaster victims and lessen Davie CERT team helps out during the Orange Blossom Festival.

The Davie CERT class will meet at the Davie Fire Administration building, located at 6901 Orange Dr. Advanced registration required. For more information, call the Davie Fire Rescue Department at 954-797-1213.

Davie Seniors Enjoy a Variety of Programs and Activities By Debby Teich

L

ast month, Davie seniors gath-

ered for some Bingo and a delicious Saint Patrick’s Day lunch. This is just one example of the many programs and activities available to seniors at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center, 3801 South Pine Island Road. The Center is open every day, except holidays, and most of the offerings are free or at a reduced rate. Seniors can participate in non-instructional classes in sewing, knitting, crafts and more. They can play Mahjongg, board games or Bingo on Friday nights. They can attend pot luck lunches, themed dinners or the Veteran’s Day breakfast. They can go on discounted monthly trips to places like the Bonnet House, Gulfstream Park, Hollywood beach, Fleet Week and more. The Center also celebrates senior birthdays on the third Friday of every month and helps transport seniors who are not able to drive to the grocery store. “The seniors look forward to all of the activities,” said Anna Francis, recreation leader. Two lucky seniors recently won free trips

The Committee proposes activities and programs and also offers opinions on issues that address the lifestyle of elderly residents. It raises money through donations, as well as proceeds from selling goods at the garage sales at Pine Island Park. Committee meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center, at 1 p.m., except in June, July and August. There is typically a guest speaker. Last month, Giovanni Moss, Director, Director of Housing and Community Development, discussed housing for seniors. “It is important for seniors to have a voice in the issues that affect us,’ said Bill Leibowitz, committee member. Bill is hoping that the Town of Davie will improve public transportation, but recognizes that there is no funding. “The day will come when I can no longer drive and must rely on public transportation.” For information, call 954-327-3940 or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Israeli College Students Visit to Educate Their Peers By Debby Teich

A

fter meeting with Liraz Segal and Noffar Keidar, many Broward

County students have a better understanding of what life is like in Israel. In February, the two college students from Nesher, Israel, spent a week exploring cultural similarities and differences, educating students of all ages about their homeland, and promoting world peace. The visit was organized by the Jewish Federation of Broward County, which has an ongoing partnership between Nesher and Broward County. For the past few years, the Federation has facilitated a variety of activities, including a “twinning” program, where students in both locations are in contact via Skype and other manners. Several Nesher teens have visited Broward County and many Americans have visited Nesher to volunteer. This is the first time, however, that the Federation has sponsored a visit from college students. “There has been so much anti-Israel activity happening on college campuses,” said Pepi Dunay, Vice President at the Jewish Federation of Broward County for Israel

Noffar Keidar, Joyce Goldberg, Jeff Saster, Liraz Segal, Eli and Mona Habib

& Overseas and coordinator of the Broward-Nesher partnership. “We want students to know about all of the humanitarian efforts that Israel is engaged in for the betterment of mankind.” The two students participated in “iFest Israel”, at Nova Southeastern University, and the “Lend a Hand to the World”events at FAU and Hillel. They visited JAFCO and the Daniel D. Cantor Noffar Keidar, Marsh Goldberg and Liraz Segal Senior Center, as well as an Israeli defense class to talk about their service in the Israeli Defense Forces. They spoke with students at David Posnack Jewish Day School and Temple Dor Dorim and had Shabbat dinner with the Temple Solel young adults group. They met with various agencies, attended Frijoles con Kugel, had brunch with the Israel and Overseas Committee and much more. They even had some free time to explore and experience college life in the United States. “It was a great opportunity for Americans to meet some Israeli citizens and hear their personal stories to give them a better understanding of what it is like to grow up in Israel,” said Dror Ben Yossef, the Isreali “Shaliach” (or emissary) who helped coordinate the program. Yossef will spend a year living in the United States. For information on the Jewish Federation of Broward County, visit www.jewishbroward.org.

Three Keys to an Effective Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

I

n February 2012, Attorneys General from 49 states and five major

lenders - GMAC/Ally Financial, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase and Citibank - reached one of the largest consumer settlements in U.S. History. The settlement was made as a result of legal actions filed by each of the State Attorneys General against these lenders for engaging in unfair and deceptive practices during foreclosure proceedings. This included submitting fraudulent or incomplete affidavits, forged mortgage instruments, and “robo-signing” documents for the purpose of expediting foreclosures. Under the $25 billion settlement, three categories of homeowners are entitled to some recovery or benefit.

FREE DVD

First, homeowners who are behind on their loans due to a legitimate financial or other hardship will be able to modify their home loan and will be entitled to avail themselves of revised servicing and loan modification guidelines, which the five lenders listed above will be required to follow. These homeowners will also be eligible for a significant principal reduction on their home loan under the settlement. In fact, up to $17 billion of the settlement has been earmarked for principal reductions for qualified home loans. Next, homeowners that are current on their mortgage payments, but are struggling to make those payments, and owe more than their property is worth, will be eligible under the settlement to refinance their loan at today’s historically low interest rates. Up to $3 billion has been set aside under the settlement for refinance relief nationwide. Finally, individuals who lost their homes during a foreclosure proceeding will be eligible to receive up to a $2,000 reimbursement from this settlement. Nearly $1.5 billion will be distributed to individuals who fall within this category. You will not be required to prove any financial harm to receive your refund, and will not be required to release your lender from any liability for actual damages that you may have suffered as a result of a wrongful foreclosure. If you have a loan with one of these five lenders, and fall within one of the three categories of individuals above, please contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-7707102 to schedule an appointment, to determine whether you qualify to benefit from this historic $25 billion settlement, and to ensure that you receive the maximum recovery under the settlement. O

ver the past several years, there have been a

number of changes in family law. We have changed from a state that awarded custody to one parent, to a state that now requires the Parents to enter into a Parenting Plan and neither parent has custody. We have modified our child support guidelines and allowed discounted rates for parents who have at least 20% of the overnights with minor children. We have defined certain aspects of the alimony laws so that the kind of alimony awarded is primarily based upon the number of years a couple is married. The above changes, although substantial, are relatively minor compared to the possible changes in alimony that are being discussed in Tallahassee. I emphasize that these changes are not yet law, although the State House has passed this bill and it has been passed on to the State Senate for their approval or possible changes. If this bill passes, permanent alimony will no longer exist in Florida. At the present time, a marriage of 17 years or more results in a presumption in favor of permanent alimony. This form of alimony terminates only upon the death of either party or the remarriage of the receiving spouse. Retirement, at normal retirement age, could also cause permanent alimony to end. The new law, if passed, will abolish permanent alimony. A marriage of 20 years or more would result in long-term alimony which could only be for a period of time equal to 60% of the length of marriage. The length of marriage starts at the date of marriage and ends on the date a Petition For Dissolution of Marriage is filed with the Court. So if alimony is warranted in a 20 year marriage, the maximum amount of time that the award can continue would be 12 years. If the marriage is less than 20 years in duration, the maximum amount of time the award can continue is 50% of the length of marriage. In addition, the amount of alimony will no longer be based upon the standard of living established during the marriage. The amount awarded may not exceed 20% of the payor’s monthly net income averaged over the last 3 years of marriage. If the payee is in a supportive relationship the alimony would terminate as well. The most interesting part of the new proposed law is that it applies to existing alimony awards. Therefore, if the law passes as proposed, a person paying permanent alimony will be able to file for a modification of his/her existing obligation if it exceeds either the 50 or 60% time limit. Such a petition however could not be filed earlier than two years from the date the law goes into effect. I wish to emphasize that this is only a proposal and it has not yet passed. I will keep everyone informed as it progresses. If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation at 954 385-9160.

Is There New Construction in Cooper City and Davie? Yes! By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-pro, SFR, CLHMS

S

ince the housing boom has slowed, many of my

clients have asked me about construction of new homes. Where are they? Fortunately, three beautiful communities come to mind.

Monterra

Monterra offers an amenity rich lifestyle, starting from the mid $300s. They have sold out of their first collection of homes known as the Monterey Collection. The Santa Barbara Collection starts from $341,000 and the Catalina Collection starts around $440,000. Monterra at Cooper City is a master-planned community spanning over 500 acres in one of the most convenient locations in Southwest Broward County. The community provides easy access to Florida’s Turnpike and I-75. The entire community offers brand new single-family, estate and townhome floor plans designed in Santa Barbara and Old-Florida architecture. Monterra claims to be a Community Development District. The community features: elegant entrance, manned 24/7 security guard, 10,000 square foot clubhouse, tennis and basketball courts, clubhouse with banquet room, library equipped with a flat screen TV, professionally equipped fitness center, his-andhers lockers with showers and steam rooms, spacious pool and patio area, barbecue pit, tot-lot with its own jungle gym, scenic walking trails, vistas of lakes and nature preserves, and planned bike paths. Currently, there are only four re-sales (single-family homes) ranging from $364,000 to $700,000. I will keep you posted as re-sales come up. You can also check my website zonahorton.com.

Ranches of Cooper City

The Ranches is an enclave of 20 superb new estate home residences on home sites measuring at least 17,140 square feet. Residences at The Ranches at Cooper City may include: impact-resistant windows and sliding glass doors, maple kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, granite kitchen and bathroom countertops, 18x18” tile throughout all first floor living areas and a Whirlpool stainless steel appliance package, featuring a built-in wall oven and double dishwashers. The Ranches at Cooper City is sold out and there are no re-sales currently. I will keep you posted and can put you on my “alert” system if you are interested in this development.

Woodbridge Ranches

This Davie community consists of four to eight-bedroom estate homes, complete with winding country-style roads and lakes. It boasts a fountain pool, lush landscaping and the home sites set back forty to fifty feet – giving your residence that total “estate” feeling. There are six different models to choose from currently and there are two resales currently available priced at over $1 million. Whether you are looking for new construction from the Florida Keys to Jupiter, I would be more than willing to assist you in your purchase. With the historically low interest rates, now is the time that you may want to sell and move up to something new, wonderful and perhaps state of the art and energy efficient that you can enjoy . . . until you are ready to make another move! If you would like a detailed property report, please contact me at Horton.z@ewm. com, and I will send your report within twenty-four hours. You can visit my website at www.zonahorton.com to search properties in all of Broward County. You can even perform a search in one of thirteen different languages. I look forward to working with you on your home sale, purchase or lease.

ask the expert

Sedation Dentistry - You No Longer Have to Be Afraid By Dr. Matilde Palacin

F

earful patients no longer have to be afraid of the dentist. You

can get the treatment you need, easily and painlessly, while you are totally relaxed and comfortable. There are many benefits to oral sedation. When you are sedated using oral medications, there are no needles. While you do not actually sleep during treatment, you will be sleepy – sedated just enough to make you totally relaxed and at ease. One of the best parts is that by the next day most people remember little-to-nothing of the time they spent in the dental chair. Gone are memories of the sights, sounds, and smells of the office that are often so traumatizing. With sedation dentistry, time seems to pass very quickly. It is a great option if you need a large amount of dental care completed at one time. Oral sedation enables your dentist to work more efficiently and complete more treatment in fewer visits, reducing four or five appointments to just one or two. Many dental procedures can be completed with the help of sedation dentistry, including crown work, dentures, fillings, gum care, tooth whitening, bonding and root canals. It is possible for you to smile with confidence and chew without pain.

Treatment

After a consultation and health history review are completed, the best oral sedation medications and protocol will be selected to meet your individual needs. Some patients receive a pill to take the night before the appointment. You will arrive (with your companion) at the office already feeling relaxed. Since the purpose of oral sedation is to make you as comfortable as possible, you will be encouraged to come to your appointment wearing comfortable clothing. You will be covered with a warm blanket to relax while you are waiting for treatment to begin.

Who Can Benefit From Oral Sedation Dentistry?

People who have: ▸▸ fear and anxiety about seeing a dentist ▸▸ a history of traumatic dental experiences ▸▸ difficulty getting numb ▸▸ sensitive teeth ▸▸ a need to have more dentistry completed in fewer visits ▸▸ a bad gag reflex And people who: ▸▸ hate needles ▸▸ don’t do well with the sights, sounds, and smells associated with dental treatment ▸▸ are embarrassed about the amount of dental work that may be required

Common Questions:

Q: Will I be unconscious? A: No, but you will be completely relaxed and comfortable. Q: Will I be monitored? A: Yes, at all times. Your vital signs will be taken throughout the appointment and you will be monitored closely. A member of our team will always be with you.

Q: Will someone need to accompany me to my appointment? A: Yes, you will need a companion to drive you to and from your appointment. Q: How long will I remain sedated after my appointment? A: Each person’s recovery time is different based on the medications and dosages

that are used. You should plan on relaxing and taking it easy for the remainder of the day after your appointment and have your companion stay with your until you are fully recovered.

For more information about this topic, contact Dr. Matilde Palacin at 954-472-4656 or visit www.palacindental.com.

home décor

Exciting Views! By Faryal Ali

I

was flooded by mail ask-

ing what to do with small windows. My advice is always to think big. Just because the opening is small, short or narrow doesn’t mean we have to dress it that way. Think of how we style our clothing to make ourselves seem taller; we use stripes. To add some body, we wear horizontal stripes. To create an elongated torso, we wear our belts below the waist. To translate this into your drapery, place your tiebacks lower to make the panel seem longer. Height: To create height, go higher than your window. Normal is 3” above. Once you have soffit space above, use it. Go ceiling height if you have 9 ft. ceilings. Width: To make your window look wider than it is, extend your rods as much as you can to the sides. If your view is important to you, make sure blinds and drape panels stack off to the sides onto the wall. If not, the fabric hangs in the window and conceals your view. This is called “stack back” and is definitely something you want to discuss with your drapery designer. Add Layers: The pictures use a contrast band for interest, as in the green and copper drapery, or a Roman shade in a natural material or in a neutral fabric. By adding layers, you are doing two things: ▸▸ You are increasing the functionality of your window because you can raise and lower the shade to control your privacy. ▸▸ You are adding dimension to you window. It is the same concept as when we dress with a jacket and inner piece. Like an inner piece for your jacket, you can contrast it for interest or coordinate the colors for an integrated look. I invite you to visit our 4,000 sq foot showroom. We feature the endless possibilities to dress up small windows and give them spunk. As I always say, “Seeing is believing.”

Stature You Deserve…

At a Surprisingly Low Price. Above-ground entombment in a mausoleum has historically been viewed as a prestigious option for memorialization. So wouldn’t it surprise you to know that we can offer you this distinguished option for less than ground burial?

Starting as low as $3,250!

The Importance of a Kids Fitness Program By Steve Bowser Co-owner of The Playground Gym/CrossFit Affliction in Davie

D

id you know that according to Kidshealth.org,

one out of every three kids in America is considered overweight? Or that on average, kids between the ages 8 -18 spend an average of four hours in front of a TV and another two hours in front of a computer screen or playing video games? That's six hours in front of a screen every day. Let's not even get into what type of physical fitness program is being offered at their schools. So let's think about this - your kids are sitting around all day in school, then coming home and watching TV, playing video games, on the computer and maybe sitting around doing homework. It sounds like a very sedentary lifestyle to me. Sadly the kids are also shoveling down junk food, mainly through fast food. Many children and parents just don't realize how vital lean protein, fruits and veggies, and good fats in nuts and seeds are to a healthy diet. A good start would be cutting back on sugar and substituting soda for water. Our CrossFit Kids Fitness Program is designed to help children between the age group of 6 thru 8 and 9 thru 12 by teaching them proper form and technique in basic movements and exercises. Your child’s coordination, strength and overall conditioning will increase, which in turn will assist them with neurological and cognitive motor skills. Our classes will use skill practice, workouts and games along with educating your child to make healthier food choices. Your child will progress through a series of levels as they gain athletic abilities. You will notice your child will become more focused in school and transition into sports much easier due to their enhanced athletic skills. ody Mind medicine acknowledges the connec-

tions between our physical body and all the interacting subtle energy fields we call mind. In truth there is no separation between our physical body and the underlining emotional, mental and spiritual states that affect it. Just as we can understand the unseen air we breathe creates life-sustaining effects in our body, we can see a similarity with our feelings and our thoughts affecting our body through release of certain biochemicals in our brain, affects on our organ systems, etc., which in turn affect our health. According to The Center for Mind-Body Studies in Washington DC., individuals who are chronically pessimistic, angry, anxious or depressed are clearly more susceptible to stress and illness, including heart disease and cancer. Combine that, with the fact that according to Healthy People 2000 (a report from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services), 70-80% of all visits to the doctor were for stress-related induced illness. It makes sense to pay attention to our mind, thoughts and emotions in order to decrease stress and make us less vulnerable to disease. The connection of our bodies to our mind may seem intricate and complex, but nonetheless the tools that we can adopt in order to create health and wellbeing are simple and natural in many aspects. The first step is to connect to BREATH. Breath is used as the focal point in all traditional healing and spiritual practices. Most of us do not breathe correctly, depriving our physical body from the necessary oxygen required for healthy functioning of our cells. Furthermore, breath is the essential essence that connects us with the intangible universal source energy that de-stresses us and feeds our body, mind, and psyche. Breath is the most simple, yet powerful tool we have available to create life-sustaining health changes in our body/mind. Secondly, using our ability to visualize also helps to release our minds, reduce our stress and create health. This is due to the fact that our stress is created from our beliefs and that our body is unconsciously responding to our perceived reality at all times. Therefore, when we visualize something positive or harmonious and change our perception, we can de-stress. But understanding is not as important as practicing. Try this simple practice for a week and notice how you feel. ▸▸ Become aware of your breath and follow the in and out breath for 5, 10 or 20 cycles. As you do this, imagine the energy source that is coming in through your breath, moving through your whole body and bringing health and vitality to every cell. Try this practice outside, in the morning when you wake up, at lunchtime, on break time or in the evening to let go of the day. There are many other tools and modalities that help create health and strengthen our body mind connection such as aromatherapy, pressure points, meditations and others, but most importantly the key tools you already possess; BREATHE and PERCEPTION. So explore these and see how you feel! take infection control very seriously. We have three people at the front desk to help check patients in and out, as well as to help schedule any future appointments with us or any specialist. There is also a private area to discuss any confidential questions and to take care of any billing or insurance needs. We employ three dental hygienists, who have been with us for over a decade, to help maintain your preventive care.

confidence and happiness. For over 50 years, Davie Dental (formerly Bluth Family Dental) has been applying artistic and technical skills with the latest materials and cutting edge technology. It offers personalized, high quality dental treatment, with each patient’s individual needs in mind. Davie Dental creates long lasting, functional and dramatically beautiful teeth. The staff makes every effort to create a positive dental experience for each patient, whether a preschooler, teen, adult or grandparent.

founder is Norman Bluth DDS, graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and the very first dentist in Davie. Dr. Barry Bluth, graduate of Tufts School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA, has been practicing dentistry for 22 years. He was, and still is, responsible for implementing all of our advanced technology in the practice and making sure it is up to date for the doctors.

Dental, our patients benefit from visiting a large private practice. Since there are many ways to approach each treatment, our dentists are able to consult with one another during each phase of dental diagnosis and treatment planning. Solo practitioners are not able to do this. Our assistants, front desk personnel and hygienists have been employed with us for many years. In fact, some have spent their entire careers with us. We have staff members that speak English and Spanish.

Sherri Bluth, RDH and DMD, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, for both the Dental Hygiene and Dental school. Prior to Dental school, she practiced dental hygiene for 10 years in Philadelphia and New York City. She has worked with professionals of the highest quality, many of them holding academic appointments in the fields of periodontics and prosthodontics. She has been practicing dentistry with Davie Dental for 13 years. Our periodontist, Dr. Michael Hennessy, graduated from New York University School of Dental Medicine and our associate, Dr. Michael Paesani, graduated from the University of Pittsburg School of Dentistry.

What services does your practice offer? We provide comprehensive dental care with an emphasis on prevention and cosmetics. Our wide array of dental services includes: Cosmetic Restorations (tooth colored fillings, porcelain veneers/crowns), Zoom in-office whitening, athome Whitening, Orthodontics (traditional and Invisalign), Periodontics, Routine Root Canal Therapy and Extractions. For patients who need missing teeth replaced, our periodontist can surgically place Implants. For a less invasive treatment alternative, Crown and Bridge and removable appliances are other treatment

provide a full range of periodontal (gum) treatment, both non-surgical and surgical. Our periodontist provides all phases of periodontal procedures, including osseous surgery, bone grafts, sinus lifts, extractions and implant placement.

How do implants help your patients? Dental implants are usually the treatment of choice for missing teeth, since they are the most successful and longest lasting treatment options available. Often, we are able to place implants and prosthetic teeth in the same day. We help many people who currently have dentures by adding two dental implants to help retain their prosthesis.

Do you have any advanced techniques or equipment you offer that others may not? Our facility and equipment are state-of-the art. We have digital radiography which allows us to read x-rays immediately on a computer. We also have panoramic and cephalometric radiograph equipment installed, so we can see impacted third molars or any suspicious pathology right away. We have the latest 3d cat scan for dental implant surgery. All of our implant surgeries are performed virtually on a 3-dimensional image of the patient prior to the actual surgery. Many of our prosthetic dental restorations are designed on a computer, and then milled by a cad/cam machine. Since we are paperless, all of our treatment planning, treatment notes, dental charting, prescriptions, lab scripts and digital radiographs are stored on computers. This means that patient files are always easily accessible.

Describe your facility. We continually look to improve and modify the office as needed to better serve our patients. We have 10 private well-equipped operatories, with flat screen televisions, computers, WiFi, streaming videos and soft music. We have a separate sterilization area, which meets all OSHA standards, as we

Davie Dental provides comprehensive dental care with an emphasis on prevention and cosmetics.

Do you provide any sedation procedures? We offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral conscious sedation for patients who want to be very relaxed and unaware of the procedure. Do you treat dental emergencies? We always see emergencies the same day if possible. We are typically available to speak with patients on the weekends if they have urgent dental needs. it’s their business

Fit and Trim Helps Patients Look and Feel Their Best By Debby Teich

O

What can patients expect on their first visit?

besity can negatively affect your

health, your self-esteem, the way you feel and the way you look. At Fit and Trim in Pembroke Pines, patients are changing their lives by losing weight and keeping it off. The staff is enthusiastic, friendly and always ready to help you stay on the path to a happier, healthier, thinner you.

Lucy Linares, president, answered some commonly asked questions about Fit and Trim.

What services do you offer? We specialize exclusively in the HCG diet. We help our patients reach their weight loss goals as quickly as possible by monitoring their progress weekly, guiding them and offering encouragement. We provide them with the information and resources they need to be successful.

Patients are greeted by one of our friendly and professional HCG specialists. After they fill out a comprehensive medical history form, we measure their key body composition readings, weigh them and perform a blood pressure test. Once we have all of the information, we sit down with patients to determine weight loss goals and to talk about why they want to lose weight. We thoroughly explain the HCG diet protocol, because informed patients are more successful patients. We encourage them to ask questions and let them know that we are always here to guide them and support them. We also provide them with any products they need to start the protocol at no charge.

Is the diet medically supervised? Dr. Ausberto

The HCG specialists are friendly and professional.

Hidalgo supervises patients. He has been practicing medicine as a general doctor and pediatrician for more than 20 years.

to burn more fat. We caution against high intensity exercise.

Is this a new diet? No. The HCG Diet Protocol was written and discovered by Dr. A.T.W Simeons, who dedicated his life to the study of obesity and how to cure it. The first reported use of HCG was published in 1954 by Dr. A.T.W Simeons.

after Raul lost 60 pounds on Fit and Trim’s HCG diet.

How much weight do patients lose on the HCG diet? Our patients lose 1/2 to 2 pounds per day. On average, 70% of people that have participated in the HCG diet claim they have had no difficulty keeping the weight off.

What are some of the benefits of losing weight? More than 60% of Americans are classified as overweight or obese and could benefit from trimming down. Being overweight or obese is often associated with an increased risk for the development of a multitude of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and more. These are often preventable with healthier lifestyles and normal body weights.

Why is this diet different from other diets? This diet shows you how to appreciate healthy, natural food, and how to consume it in the correct combinations. You eat food that gives you natural energy, without chemicals or additives. You can purchase the food in any grocery store. We even provide a spray that makes the vegetables taste better.

62

How Does the HCG diet work? HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a natural hormone produced in large quantities during pregnancy. The body produces HCG to metabolize fat as an energy source for the growth and nourishment of the baby. Although HCG is naturally produced only in pregnant women, as a diet aid it works the same for men and women. The focus of the Fit and Trim HCG is to dissolve the unhealthy, abnormal fat. Many other diet programs fail to convert abnormal fat into calories, as they can only burn the structural and normal brown fat. As a result, the body does not lose the abnormal fat, no matter how much less patients consume and workout. What should patients expect while on the diet? This is a very balanced diet that incorporates lean protein, colorful fresh vegetables, and low glycemic fruits. The Fit and Trim protocol teaches healthy eating habits. The diet that you will follow initially includes the building blocks for the new, healthy habits you will keep after finishing the program.

Does the protocol include exercise? There is no need to exercise while on the program, but we recommend a 10-15 minute walk daily

Is there a maintenance plan? Yes, it is 21 days long. During the last period of the protocol, the body’s metabolic rate has to be stabilized and a new set point weight has to be created. Do you offer any discounts? The first 30 customers that call will receive our highly successful 40-day protocol at half price. Are drops the most effective way to take HCG? Homeopathic HCG drops are just as effective as HCG injections. Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world. It has been the primary medical system of choice for a great number of people in other countries for many years, with the allopathic methods being their secondary choice.

How does your program differ from your competitors? The staff at Fit and Trim is enthusiastic, friendly and professional. We measure weight, body fat, water %, muscle mass, physique rating, DCI/BMR, metabolic age, bone mass and visceral fat. These key factors tell us how well the patient is following the protocol and help us optimize the diet. We also provide our patients with recipes to help them stay on track.

How often do patients visit the office? Patients have the option to visit the office every week or every 10 days. We encourage them to visit every week so we can closely monitor their progress. Fit and Trim is located at 17901 NW 5th St., Suite 101B, Silver Lakes Village in Pembroke Pines (Just off Pines Blvd. & 178th Ave. on NW corner of 5th Street). For information, call 954-200-7744. During the planning stage for the I-595 Express Project in 2008, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) met with multiple emergency responder agencies along the I-595 corridor that would be impacted by the construction project. The Davie Fire Department took an active role in plan reviews and made safety recommendations. The Davie Fire Rescue received the FDOT 2012 Public Partnering Award.

Links for Literacy

The 11th Annual Links for Literacy two-day special event, hosted by former Miami Dolphins players Twan Russell and Joe Rose, raised over $40,000 for The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation (RLSARF), a non-profit organization founded by Twan Russell that is committed to fighting illiteracy among highrisk youth in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Monies raised will go toward the RLSARF’s 12 Reading Rooms located throughout South Florida.

Pi Day

On March 14, members of the Archbishop McCarthy High School Link Crew hosted “pi Day” for McCarthy freshman. March 14th is the third month and 14th day of the year and commonly written as 3/14. Pi is the math symbol for 3.14, used for calculating the area of a circle and pie is a circle! Students wanting a bit more fun were able to pie a teacher for a $1 donation.
