Autumn Has Arrived

W

hile our friends and family up north may

be noticing a nip in the air, it’s still hot and humid here in the Sunshine State. But, there’s no mistaking that autumn has arrived. Here in South Florida, fall means football. Whether your weekends are spent cheering on your children from the sidelines or watching your favorite teams on TV, there’s a lot of great action taking place on the gridiron. Another telltale sign that autumn has arrived is the appearance of Halloween merchandise. The store shelves are stocked with candy and costumes, and pumpkin patches are popping up in empty lots everywhere. In a few short weeks, the streets will be filled with pint-sized super-heroes and fairy tale princesses out trick-ortreating. Don’t forget to take pictures of your little ones as these are the magical memories that last a lifetime. Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone!

Davie to Celebrate Government Week By Debby Teich

T

his month, Davie students will have a much better idea of what

it takes to run a city. Some will even get a chance to meet local officials. It is all part of Government Week, which will be held from October 15 to 19. The Florida League of Cities, an association of member municipalities throughout Florida, is sponsoring “My city: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it.” The program is designed to educate school-aged children about their local government. “The Town participates in this program because we believe young citizens should have basic knowledge of their local government,” said Phillip Holste, Intergovernmental Affairs Manager. “Local government has the greatest impact on the daily lives of their residents. Davie seizes this opportunity to open its doors to school children and give them a peek at how their Town operates and what the Town does for its residents.” Approximately 200 students, from kindergarten to high school, are expected to attend throughout the week. Between the hours of 9:30am to 3:30pm, they will take a full tour of all of the departments located at

Town Hall. The students will also get the opportunity to meet Town Hall staff. Police, Fire, Public Works, Parks and Recreation and Utilities are located at various other locations. Holste says that he encourages students to attend the October 17 Town Council meeting to witness local government first hand. All groups will check in at the Davie Town Hall, 6591 Orange Drive. Groups may not exceed 40 students per tour group. Groups must adhere to school board standards as it relates to the number of adults required to supervise children on field trips. To participate, download an application at www.davie-fl.gov and submit it no later than October 10. Once registration is full, no other groups will be accepted. For information, call 954-7971163 or send an email to matthew_mlodzinski@ davie-fl.gov. Left Town Clerk Russell Muniz shows students from Davie Christian Academy some official Town documents during the 2011 Government Week. Right: Students from Gloria Dei Lutheran School meet with Mayor Judy Paul during a prior Government Week tour.

Alvarez had the opportunity to spend time with members of Davie Fire Rescue. From the moment he entered the firehouse, he knew that he had discovered what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Alberto recently met for the first time the Broward Education Foundation donor who is helping him realize his dream to become an emergency medical technician and firefighter. Mary Beth Williams is providing a scholarship that will help him complete his training at McFatter Technical Center in Davie. Mary Beth established the scholarship fund earlier this year in memory of her brother, Bill Elliott, a Pompano Beach fire fighter who was tragically killed in a training exercise. “Bill had a special gift,” said Mary Beth. “He fixed everyone’s everything. We want Bill’s legacy of always helping others to become a way students can realize their dreams of college.” Alberto says that meeting Mary Beth was one the most emotional experiences of his life. “I couldn’t conjure up words that could describe how grateful I felt for their support,” said Alberto. “It became my goal to become even just a fraction of the man Bill was. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of Bill and his family.” Alberto hopes to meet Bill’s friends and coworkers at the Pompano fire station one day. “Until then, I have a memory to live up to and a lot of people to make proud,” he continued. Alberto’s experiences during his four years at Western helped him determine his career path. As a member of the WHS Health Occupations Students of America, he competed regionally and at a state competition, where he Mary Beth Williams with Alberto Alvarez won 5th place in the CERT competition and received national recognition for his Career Development Portfolio. Through his health sciences class, he had the opportunity to shadow professionals twice a week at Memorial Hospital Pembroke. He also participated in an independent study program to shadow and ride with Davie Fire Rescue Stations 38 and 65. “I want to become a firefighter, because I want to give back to my community and be there for those who can’t aid themselves,” said Alberto. Alberto is currently enrolled in the EMT program at McFatter Technical Center, where he draws on all of the practical skills he learned during the time he spent with Davie Fire Rescue. “I will always be grateful to Davie Fire Rescue for teaching me, even while I was in high school,” said Alberto. “Besides practical skills, they also taught me a lot about loving my city and the people in it. They taught me to be proud of who I am and to be proud of my neighbors.” Alberto plans to continue on the fire side of the program at McFatter and then study Paramedics at Broward College. He also plans to complete the necessary certifications to become an officer in the fire service. Alberto is one of nearly 180 Broward high school graduates who received scholarships from the Broward Education Foundation at a recent scholarship awards ceremony. Broward Education Foundation raised $720,000 in 2012 to fund scholarships for college bound graduates with unmet financial need. During the past 27 years, more than 4,040 graduates have received more than $9.4 million in scholarships. For information on the Broward Education Foundation, visit www.browardedfoundation.net

Hormones and Migraines By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

I could tell you every time the weather changed,

because I would get a terrible migraine from the changing barometric pressure. I would have migraines 2-3 times a week. After the bio-identical pellets, I have not had a migraine in the past three months. I am able to enjoy more time with my husband and children. Thank you, Dr. Nerette.” L.D. Migraine headaches cause disability, suffering, and loss of quality of life. As a result, they have been ranked among the top ten most disabling disorders for both sexes by the World Health Organization. Approximately 30 million people in the United States suffer from migraine headaches and about 75 percent are women. The majority of women who experience migraines are between the ages of 20 and 45. Unfortunately, these women who experience headaches are those who can least afford taking time off, since they are juggling responsibilities of home and work. Typically, the women of this age group have young children, busy careers or both. Medical research supports a strong link between hormones and migraines, since migraine occurrence tends to be the same for both boys and girls until puberty, at which point there is a sharp increase in migraines among girls who begin menstruating. Moreover, migraine attacks tend to worsen in frequency and severity around the menstrual period. The good news is that the majority of migraine sufferers benefit from the treatment of bio-identical hormone therapy that is aimed at correcting hormonal imbalances. As a result, most women find that their headaches become less frequent or disappear completely. Unbalanced Estrogen, Testosterone and Progesterone can cause debilitating headaches and may be triggered by numerous factors, such as stress, fatigue, menopause, menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum and oral contraceptives. Unfortunately, many women are treated with birth control pills, pain relievers or both and these do not treat the underlying hormonal imbalance. In addition to a comprehensive medical history, a simple blood test may be all that is needed to determine a hormonal imbalance. Once an imbalance is determined, it is essential that the proper type of hormones and method of delivery be chosen to adequately treat the imbalance and improve migraines. The type of hormone chosen, synthetic versus bio-identical, is extremely important. Bio-identical hormones mimic exactly your own body, molecule per molecule, versus their synthetic counterparts, with known cancer-causing agents within their chemical structure. The delivery method of the bio-identical hormone is paramount. It is important that the delivery is constant with no high peaks and lows, since these peaks and lows in hormones may trigger migraines. This constant homeostasis of hormones can be achieved with bio-identical hormone pellet therapy. The benefits are seen as quickly as five days. “I had exhausted all types of prescriptions, over the counter medications, and was on investigational medications to treat my migraines without success. I was placed on bio-identical pellets by Dr. Nerette over a year ago and my migraines are gone!” S.N. Call us today at 954-384-8989 for your complimentary consultation to see if BioIdentical Hormone Sottopelle Treatment can help you decrease or completely take away your migraines. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Flamingo Nursery Hosts the 4th Annual Fall Harvest Festival By Debby Teich

T

he Flamingo Road

Nursery and Farmer’s Market’s 4th Annual Fall Harvest Festival has become a tradition for South Florida residents, from ages 2 to 92. The five-acre nursery in Davie is completely decorated for the fall season. Every weekend in October features a variety of fun and educational activities for the entire family. “Fall is a great time for family, fun, and gardening,” said Owner/President, Jim Dezell. “We’ve had a great turnout in the past and we expect this year’s Festival to be the biggest and best one yet.” The Festival has one of the largest pumpkin patches in South Florida. Purchase a pumpkin and then decorate it in the Paint-A-Pumpkin activity area. Take a hayride on a horse-drawn carriage or have your child’s face painted by the popular Carly Sue. Come hungry and sample the pulled pork, chicken and ribs at the Southern Swamp Barbecue. Stop by the Farmer’s Market for a boxed lunch. Enjoy fresh fruit smoothies and frozen lemonade from the Juice Bar or ice cream and other items from the Creamery & Sweet Shop. Purchase some traditional fall items from the Harvest Market, such as hay bales, corn stalks, gourds, Indian corn, scare crows, candied apples, cider and roasted corn. Throughout the month, Flamingo Road Nursery will also offer free Garden Talks

for adults. On October 6 and 7, learn how to “Grow Your Own Organic Herbs and Vegetables.” Free talks include: Organic Gardening at 9am, Grow Herbs at 11am, and Vegetable Gardening at 1pm. On October 13 and 14, learn how to “Color Your World.” Topics include: Choosing the R ight Container at 9am, Choosing the Right Annuals at 11am, and Make It and Take It Mixed Container Gardening at 1pm ($30 fee). On October 20 and 21, sample more than 15 varieties of apples at the Farmer’s Market during the “Appplefest Fruit and Citrus Celebration.” Free talks include: Organic Gardening at 9am, Edible Landscaping at 11am and Growing Fruit and Citrus at 1pm. On October 27 and 28, learn about “Specialty Gardens.” Topics include: Growing Orchids at 9am, Butterfly Gardening at 11am and Specialty Container Gardens at 1pm. Traveling Replica of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Makes a Stop in Davie By Debby Teich

T

he Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall honors U.S. service mem-

bers of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War, service members who died in service in Vietnam/South East Asia, and those service members who were unaccounted for (Missing In Action) during the War. From October 19 to 21, area residents will have an opportunity to show their support for all of our country’s military heroes by visiting a traveling replica of the Wall, at Forest Lawn South Funeral and Cemetery in Davie. It will be free and open to the public 24 hours a day. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is part of a national memorial in Washington, D.C. The traveling Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall was built as a service to those who might never visit the nation’s capital to experience the original memorial firsthand. Since its inception in 1990, it has been displayed in more than 200 cities across the country, allowing visitors the opportunity to honor their loved ones in their own hometowns. The three-quarter scale, fauxgranite replica stands 240 feet long and eight feet high. It is inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam. Special rubbing

22 DTT ALL 1012.indd 22

paper and pencils will be available for those who would like to take an imprint of a name from the Wall. On October 18, the traveling memorial will be open for a special viewing by students in the community. This Education Day is reserved for school field trips. “A field trip offers a tremendous history lesson about the Vietnam War for anyone who visits it,” said Legacy Advisor Patricia Lamicella-Masi. Howard Foreman plans to visit the Wall in memory of his father, who died in Vietnam. “I will bring my children so they can pay their respects to the grandfather they never met,” said Foreman. “I have always wanted to visit the memorial in Washington D.C., but cannot afford the trip. I am thrilled that the replica will be right here in Davie.” The Forest Lawn South Funeral and Cemetery is located at 2401 Davie Road, in Davie (near the Pyramid). Teachers interested in learning more about Education Day or scheduling a fieldtrip should contact Carol Greff by calling 561-317-1341 or sending an email to cgreff@comcast.net. For other questions or information, call Patricia Lamicella-Masi at 954-792-9360.

Boy Scout Troop 128 Visits Alaska By Debby Teich

A

fter saving for the past four years, members of Boy Scout Troop 128

had an opportunity to participate in a special tradition. This summer, they took a trip to Alaska. “It is important for the boys to travel to other places.” said Elaine Pietroluongo, outdoor coordinator and assistant scout master. “They got to see things that they would not see anywhere else in the world.” There are 105 boys in Troop 128, which meets at Parkway Christian in Davie. This is the third time that the troop has visited “The Last Frontier” state. Twenty-six boys, ranging in age from 12 to 21 years old, participated in the 17-day adventure. They included Boy Scouts, Venture Crew and Eagle Scouts. To help pay for the $2,000 trip, the boys sold camp cards, hosted spaghetti dinners, cooked hot dogs and hamburgers at a tailgate party, sold Poinsettias at Christmastime and much more. Elaine gave the boys a list of all of the available activities and the boys created an itinerary for the group. They spent the first week at the Lost Lake Boy Scout Camp in Fairbanks, Alaska. They earned a variety of merit badges, such as environmental science, emergency preparedness, leather work, mammal studies, climbing, wilderness and survival. They participated in C.O.P.E. (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience), a custom built ropes course designed for the Boy Scouts of America. They also participated in a competition against some of the other troops staying at the campsite. During the last part of the trip, they engaged in a variety of activities with the BSA Council in Fairbanks, the Midnight Sun Council. They took an overnight 26-mile canoe trip through the back country, went for midnight hikes, spent two days in Denali National Park, panned for gold and much more. One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to Mount McKinely, the highest mountain peak in the United States. They saw it on a clear day, which is a sight that few get to see. On the last night, the scouts dined in a restaurant for the first time on the trip. Elaine has been involved with scouting since the 60’s and is a firm believer in all it has to offer. Her father was an Eagle Scout and Scout Master, her mother was a Den Mother, she was a Girl Scout and her son is an Eagle Scout. “Scouting teaches the kids so much and reinforces good morals and values,” said Elaine, who has been a Scout Master for the past 10 years. “It keeps the kids off the streets. I love everything about it.”

Miami Dolphins Host Fins and Kids Back to School Kickoff By Debby Teich

F

or the sixth year, students

throughout South Florida started off the school year right, thanks to the generosity of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins distributed approximately 100 backpacks and school supplies to students from a variety of schools, including Davie Elementary, at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University. Members of the Miami Dolphins cheerleading squad, Diane Philbin, and a host of players (Davone Bess, Dan Carpenter, John Denney, Brandon Fields, Richie Incognito, Nate Garner, Jake Long, Andrew McDonald, Paul Soliai, Jason Trusnik) took part in the event. The festivities began with a dance contest that was emceed by Jake Long and judged by the players at the team’s indoor practice facility. After the contest, participants received backpacks filled with Dolphins Most Valuable Reader folders, composition books, spiral notebooks, index cards, pencils, highlighters, Dolphins’ pencil pouches and much more. “It’s always great to be able to give back to

the community,” said Dolphins long snapper John Denney. “I have kids the same age as the students that were here today and to be able to help them out and give them an opportunity to help their education is very fulfilling. These kids were very appreciative. You could see it in their eyes that they were thankful for the small things.” This is just one of the many ways that the Dolphins give back throughout the year. “The entire Miami Dolphins Organization, including players, coaches, alumni, Miami Dolphins Women’s Organization, and staff are all committed to giving back to help our community, including local schools and charities,” said Ilona Wolpin, Sr. Director of Community Relations. During the season, players are in the community every Tuesday, on their day off. They visit schools to read to the kids, provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need, help fix up homes for military veterans, take children shopping for Back to School clothes, provide holiday gifts and much more. Schott Communities Hosts 2012 Run, Walk & Roll to Benefit the Disabled By Debby Teich

Many will never truly know what it is like to live with a disability. On October 20, the community will have an opportunity to help support those who struggle with one on a daily basis by participating in the Schott Communities for Persons who are Deaf or Disabled “2012 Run, Walk & Roll.” The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help continue Schott Communities’ mission – to create an environment of dignity and care where persons with physical and/or mental challenges are encouraged to grow in self-acceptance and independence. More than 1.000 people are expected to participate. The event will start on the campus of the Schott Communities, 6591 South Flamingo Road, in Cooper City. It will wind through Southwest Ranches on a USTAF certified course. Entrants can choose to participate in the timed 5K Run or the 1M Walk or Roll. “Some of these runners are dedicated athletes who take part in similar events throughout South Florida,” stated Event Co-Chair Dave Shula. “At this event, they have a chance to meet some of the extraordinary individuals who benefit from Schott’s many programs. They are glad to support such a worthwhile cause and help to make a difference in their lives.” Shula will be co-chairing the event with Andrew Almeida, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and defied his doctors’ predictions that he would never

26 DTT ALL 1012.indd 26

walk or speak. At the event, some of the Schott artists will demonstrate the creative skills they learned in weekly art classes. There will be an interactive workshop “Welcome to My World” to help sensitize participants to the constraints of different disabilities by allowing them to experience each disability by simulation. The event will also include Chinese raffle baskets, children’s activities, therapeutic massages, vendors and, of course, a great breakfast. Each year, over 1,000 adults with special needs pass through Schott’s doors for help. Proceeds from the event will be used to support programs and services, such as art classes for disabled adults; socials for the blind, deaf and/or disabled; sign language classes; and Saturday and 5-day adult training programs for intellectually challenged adults who have aged out of the school system. The Community also has two residences on the grounds for the deaf and disabled – a women’s group home and a six-apartment complex.

The 2011 Male Ages 50 - 54 top winners were Joe Ochipinti, Keith Ball, and Dave Shula. They are accompanied by Event Co-Chair Andrew Almeida and Executive Director Frank Casale.

Pre-registration fee is $25 and race day registration is $30. A hot breakfast, sponsored by the St. Maximilian Knights of Columbus, is complimentary for all event registrants and $5 for all guests. Interested runners should call 954-434-3306 or 954-474-4074 or visit www.schottcommunities.org. Register online at www. splitsecondtiming.com.

Arts and Crafts Festival Offers Great Holiday Shopping By Debby Teich

W

ith the holidays approaching, many have

already started shopping for those perfect gifts. Chances are you will find them at the 5th Annual Town of Southwest Ranches Country Roads Arts and Crafts Festival. The event will be held on October 20, from 10am to 4pm, at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. Former Mayor Mecca Fink came up with the idea for the Festival five years ago. She wanted to create a way for the community to gather in order to share their talents and crafts. “We have an incredible line up of artists this year,” said December Lauretano-Haines, PROS Coordinator. “It is a great opportunity to do some holiday shopping, enjoy a beautiful park atmosphere, and spend time with friends and family. It offers fun for the whole family.” All of the items at the Festival are handmade crafts or original art. They include stained glass, fabric and leather crafts, specialty wood products, mosaics, paintings, jewelry, children’s clothing, pet items and much more. The Town of Southwest Ranches will be providing musical entertainment for the event. There will also be plenty of food from vendors. There is a playground close by, so parents can shop while their kids play. Martha Schilling attended the festival last year with her family and looks forward to returning. “I never realized that

my neighbors were so talented,” said Martha. “I found several gifts for friends and family. I also had a great time catching up with people I had not seen in a while.” For those who have the creative bug, it is not too late to sign up to exhibit. If you love to sew, paint, knit, quilt, draw, throw pottery, or do some other type of handiwork and have items to sell to the public, the festival is a great place to do it. Available booth sizes include: 10 x 10 ($50), 10 x 20 (100) and 10 x 30 ($150). Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue. Bankruptcy Law Changes Make It Easier to Wipe Out Second Mortgages By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

U

ntil recently, the only way a homeowner could wipe out a

second mortgage or line of credit on his/her home was through the use of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition and plan that may require monthly payments for as long as 60 months. However, now a Homeowner may also wipe out second mortgages and lines of credit through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy which does not require monthly payments. According to an important bankruptcy appellate court decision, a homeowner who has taken out a second mortgage or line of credit against their home would be able to extinguish that lien by filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and demonstrating that the amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the value of the property. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “lien stripping.” Bankruptcy courts must now follow a “bright line” rule in all Chapter 7 cases, which makes a second mortgage totally unsecured if the first mortgage exceeds the value of the personal residence. To qualify, the court will require proof that the home is appraised for less than the value of the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified property appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 40% or more, many South Florida homeowners qualify for this option, and should take full advantage of this major change in bankruptcy law. There are several key benefits from this critical change in bankruptcy law for the homeowner stifled with debt. First, the time required to complete a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and get a “fresh start” can be as little as four months, whereas a Chapter 13 bankruptcy case may take as long as five (5) years. Second, the costs and fees of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy is only a fraction of those associated with a Chapter 13 plan and petition. Third, unlike a Chapter 13, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows you to wipe out an unlimited amount of credit card and other unsecured debt, like medical debt and outstanding mortgage debt from a prior short sale or foreclosure. Most importantly, none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls, or proceed with any foreclosure during the bankruptcy protection period. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community in both Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcy cases, as well as, foreclosure defense, homeowner’s association defense, short sales, and loan modifications. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

The Relocation Battle By Evan Baron

Let me help you get the coverage you need. People who switched to Allstate saved money and got more protection. Dollar for dollar, nobody protects you like Allstate. So don’t wait! Call me today.

LISA FAINA, CIC, LUTCF (954) 437-9220

A

s the cost of living continues to climb in South

Florida, many families have decided to pack up and leave town for hopefully greener pastures. This is a very difficult decision for most families. It is even a greater struggle at times for divorced couples with minor children. Relocation is perhaps the most difficult area of family law. Often times the custodial parent has a very legitimate reason for her/his desire to relocate. Just as often, the noncustodial parent has just as legitimate a reason to insist the minor children not be removed from the area. He/she is actively involved in the children’s lives. It is difficult to ask a parent to consent to allowing his/her children to move away, most times to a location hundreds of miles away. Gone are the every other weekend visitations, school events, and watching the kids play sports. If, however, the custodial parent can no longer afford to live in South Florida, and she/he has an opportunity to move to a city where she/he will have a better job, a cheaper cost of living, and a better life, why shouldn’t she be able to better herself? You can certainly see the dilemma.

Ask most judges and they will tell you that these cases are the most difficult to resolve - two loving parents, each wanting to be a part of their kids’ lives. Often times, the custodial parent believes that, because she/he has that designation, she/he has the right to move wherever she/he wants. That of course is not true. In the past several months, I have seen a great number of relocation cases. The cost of living, housing prices, and the general state of the economy are forcing many parents to look elsewhere. Unfortunately, I have also seen an increase in parents simply moving away with their children, without advising the other parent. This method of self-help is in violation of Florida law and harmful to the children. Approximately one year ago, Florida Statutes 61.13001 was enacted. It clearly spells out the requirements for a custodial parent seeking to relocate to a location at least 50 miles away. A parent must file a notice of intent to relocate, stating where she/he is intending to move, the date of the intended move, the new phone number and the reason for the relocation. In addition, a proposed revised visitation schedule must be included. Once received by the noncustodial parent, she/he has thirty days to file an objection with the court. If an objection is not timely filed, there is a presumption that the noncustodial parent is consenting to the move and it will be permitted. If an objection is timely filed, then the parent seeking to move must make application to the court for permission. It will then be the Court’s decision based upon a number of factors. The number one concern is the children’s best interests. If you are considering a move, I would strongly suggest you contact an attorney to discuss your obligations under the law. If you have a former spouse seeking to move with your children, you should also speak to an experienced family law attorney.

AMHS Opens an iLounge By Debby Teich

W

hen students arrive at Archbishop McCarthy High School

in Southwest Ranches each day, the first thing most do is take out their Apple, as in “Apple iPad.” Over the past two years, Principal Richard P. Jean and staff members have been fully integrating Apple technology into the school’s culture. Last year they provided students with Apple iPads to use in the classroom. This year, the school opened the iLounge, formerly known as the Media Center. Since Jean was appointed principal in 2010, he has been leading the initiative at the college prep school in an effort to provide the students with the tools necessary to prepare them for college, as well as their future careers. “This generation is about touch this, touch that, and they don’t hold back,” said Jean. “Just watch how fast a student can fly through their iPhone or iPad. As educators we have to lead by example and be up to speed. We have to teach students the most effective way to learn, provide them the best opportunities, and help them be as prepared as possible to face college and the world in which they will navigate.” The iLounge mirrors a University setting. Students are sitting on couches,

rugs and chairs in the same place that stacks of library shelves once stood. They can check out e-books, work on projects using their iPad and/ or catch up with friends. The inviting atmosphere encourages students to stay and continue working longer. “The iLounge is amazing,” said Supervising Principal Father Brendan Dalton, who also serves as Pastor of Saint Bernadette Catholic School. “Students are sitting on a couch or a rug using their iPads. With a flick of a finger, in mere moments, they access the most up-to-date information.” Jean has also upgraded technology in many other areas of the school. He installed an Apple TV in every classroom, hired a 21st Century Instruction and Learning Coordinator, updated Ed Line, installed a state-of-the-art security system which allows staff to view the entire campus from the iPad, unveiled a new website, and much more. “The plan to complete our Archbishop McCarthy culture of technology by 2013 is on track,’ said Jean. Archbishop McCarthy High School is located at 5451 South Flamingo Road in Southwest Ranches. For information, visit www.mccarthyhigh.org or call 954-434-8820.

ccording to the media, the world economy has

been less than stable. The French are looking to the United States as a safe place to invest money - as well as investors from Spain and Greece. That’s good news for the United States. Broward County (and Davie/Cooper City in particular) is one of the most desirable places in Florida and represents many foreign sellers who either have come to live here permanently or who have purchased an investment home. Davie: There are approximately 217 active, single-family homes listed for sale. Twenty-three of those listings are short sales and 5 are foreclosures. The highest priced home is listed over $4 million. There have been 312 closed sales of which 82 of the buyers paid cash. Cooper City: There are currently 81 active single-family homes listed for sale. Thirteen of those listings are short sales and 7 are foreclosures. The highest priced homes in Cooper City are in the new community known as “Monterra” – priced in the $700s. There have been 240 closed sales in 2012 of which 51 of those buyers paid cash.

What about the luxury market?

In our South Florida marketplace, luxury homes are defined with a million-dollar price tag. Of the 312 homes sold in Davie this year, 16 were priced over one million and 5 of those homes were purchased with cash. There are currently 47 homes in Davie priced over one million. Because of EWM International’s multiple luxury affiliations, I can best market your home locally, nationally and internationally. All properties priced over $250K are fed to Mayfair International Realty’s international website: www.mayfairinternationalrealty.com and www.telegraph.co.uk. All properties priced at one million dollars+ are fed to www. countrylife.co.uk (the Queen’s Magazine online). Mayfair International Realty brokers more listings than Sotheby’s. More good news – according to the 2012 NAR Report, Florida remains the leading state regarding foreign buyers. However, the Canadians have moved into first place as the leading purchasers of all foreign buyers, and they tend to focus on Florida and Arizona, vacationing from the weather of northern winters. “International buyers are heavily concentrated in four states: Florida, California, Texas, and Arizona, accounting for 51 percent of international clients. Florida has been the fastest growing destination of choice…Florida is noted as accounting for 26 percent of international sales.” EWM is an exclusive affiliate of Christie’s Great Estates. (www.ChristiesGreatEstates. com). EWM is also a member and principal owner of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. As a result, EWM is a charter member of Luxury Portfolio, a Fine Property Collection. The companies that make up Luxury Portfolio represent more million-dollarplus transactions than any other single real estate organization. (www.luxuryportfolio.com) The Luxury Portfolio represents 650 firms and 160,000 associates worldwide, of which, EWM is proud to be a member and principal owner! We are also members of Who’s Who in Luxury Marketing. This clearly demonstrates that EWM properties get MULTIPLE LUXURY exposure – Countrylife.co.uk, Luxury Portfolio, Christie’s Great Estates and LuxuryRealEstate.com. If you would like a detailed property report, please contact me at Horton.z@ewm.com, and I will send your report within 24 hours. You can visit my website at www.zonahorton.com to search properties in all of Broward County. You can even perform a search in one of thirteen different languages. I look forward to working with you on your home sale, purchase or lease.

Ask the sheriff

Common Cons Continue in Broward County

U

Want Younger, Healthier Legs?

By Sheriff Al Lamberti

nfortunately, criminals have perfected the

art of home invasion crime and all too often prey upon the elderly. Perhaps it is because senior citizens rely upon repairmen and tend to trust people. In 2008, the Broward Sheriff’s Office launched an initiative called Slam the Door on Scammers to combat these crimes. The goal of the program is to educate residents about scams used to gain entry into homes. We utilize brochures, stickers, public service announcements and the media to get this important safety information out to residents. Recently, we have received reports of these types of crimes taking place again. I felt it was important to once again discuss this important topic and ask that you share it with your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Next time you hear a knock at your door, think twice before you open it. He or she may seem clean-cut, friendly and harmless. Maybe the person knocking at the door will say their car broke down and ask to use your phone. Perhaps he or she will pose as a maintenance worker who needs to make sure something in your house is working properly. If so, beware! That person might be a scam artist trying to get inside your house to rob you. Such scammers use creative tactics, preying on your fears, loneliness or sense of sympathy to get inside. It only takes a few seconds for a scammer to grab your money or valuables when your back is turned. You may not even realize you were robbed until much later. Scammers are slick talkers and are good at convincing people that dire consequences will result if they are not allowed inside immediately. The Broward Sheriff’s Office reminds you to keep the following precautions in mind: ▸▸ Beware of people posing as electricians, exterminators, maintenance workers, water quality testers, building inspectors, meter readers, telephone or cable TV repairmen or anyone else, even if they claim to be sent by your condominium association. Check with your maintenance office before letting anyone into your home. Once inside, the phony exterminator will “accidentally” squirt you with bug spray and while you’re busy cleaning up, he will clean up, too, leaving your wallet empty. The bogus water tester will keep you busy in the kitchen, filling and spilling glasses of water while his “assistant” empties the jewelry box in your bedroom. ▸▸ Beware of people who approach your home or condo asking for assistance or wanting to use your telephone. If they need help, keep your door closed and offer to call the Broward Sheriff’s Office. If there is a legitimate need for assistance, the person will wait. If not, he will run like a thief. ▸▸ Beware of people offering low prices for unsolicited repair work such as fixing your roof or resealing your driveway. Do not open the door for any service provider that you did not request. It bears repeating: if someone comes to your home uninvited – no matter how nice he or she seems – lock your door and keep it closed, then dial 911. Deputies and police officers will not mind the call. If the “worker” is legitimate, there will be no problem. By using common sense and being extra cautious, you can help law enforcement Slam the Door on Scammers! If you would like to obtain a sticker for your front door to serve as a reminder about these scams, please contact my office at 954-831-8902 or visit a local BSO district office and request one.

His loves to go on walks. He absolutely hates thunder and noise from fireworks. He was last seen under a desk, hiding from the rain and thunder. Six-year-old Mindy (right) is a Dorkie. Her mom is a Dachshund and dad is a Yorkie. She loves everyone. Her favorite toys are her squeaky balls, which she has in several colors. She loves to play catch and chase anything that moves. Her favorite thing to eat is mangos. She was last seen under a bed snoozing.

it’s their Business

Stella’s Dancers’ Studio Celebrates 30 Years By Debby Teich

F

or 30 years, Stella’s Dancers’ Studio

has been teaching students how to become poised confident dancers. The Cooper City studio offers classes in ballet/pointe, jazz, tap, lyrical, contemporary, acrobatics, musical theater, and hip hop in a warm family atmosphere.

Stella Palumbo, owner, founder and director, answered some commonly asked questions about the studio.

What has been the secret to maintaining a successful business for 30 years? The studio has

a real family atmosphere. The staff is extremely organized and professional at all times. All of our teachers are highly qualified.

What are some of the benefits of a dance program? Dance teaches the children so much.

They learn how to become confident people, to present themselves in front of others, and to lead a healthy life style.

What is your background? My dance teacher

encouraged me to attend Dance Educators of America’s teacher’s training school. I started teaching at the age of 16 and bought the studio at 19. Even as a studio owner, I continue to study my craft locally. I also travel to New York City to take professional and master classes, and attend dance studio business seminars on a regular basis.

Describe the rest of the team. I have an

amazing faculty, from the office staff to the teaching staff. Both are equally important. The office staff keeps the studio running smoothly and efficiently, and that makes parents feel confident about their children’s participation in activities. All of the teachers have strong back-

52 DTT ALL 1012.indd 52

grounds and truly care about the dancers as people. They also provide the best dance education possible.

Describe the atmosphere at the studio. We want all of the

students to feel like it is their second home. They know all of the staff members are looking out for them. When they enter the studio, they immediately feel that warm family feeling.

Describe the facility. The studio is 4,700 square feet, with 4 large classrooms and waiting areas. All of the classrooms are equipped with raised wood floors, with a Marley covering to ensure the safest dance experience. Every room also has an observation window, so parents can follow their child’s progress at all times.

Describe the typical student. With over 300 students, there is no typical student. They range in age from 2 1/2 to 18, and include beginners to pre-professionals.

Describe the recreational program. The

program includes young children who want to get used to dance, as well as older children who enjoy dance but do not want to pursue it as a career. We use the same lesson plans for our recreational and serious dancers. This way, if a recreational student wants to transition into a more serious program, they have a good solid base of technique. The recreational dancers progress more slowly since they do not dedicate as many hours, but they still get an excellent education. We make sure these classes are fun to keep the dancers interested. All of the dancers receive the same dedication, attention and encouragement regardless of their level.

What do you offer for serious dancers?

The Illusion Dance Company is for serious dancers. They have to audition to be in the Company. The Junior Company members are required to take three hours of class per week. The regular Company members are required to take a minimum of six hours per week, but most take more. These dancers participate in local and national competitions, and local charity events.

Do the students participate in a recital at the end of the year? In May, we always have

a huge extravaganza! The students perform in a large professional theater, with lighting that rivals many TV shows. The recital teaches them how to perform in front of people with confidence and makes them feel like professional dancers.

What are some of your former students doing since they graduated from your program? Many students have gone to college

as dance majors. They have attended schools such as University of Buffalo, Fordum University and New World School of the Arts. Many of my students are also dancing professionally around the world. They are working on cruise ships, in Las Vegas and at Disney. They have been backup dancers for major artists and made music videos. One of my former students is currently on the hit television show SMASH on NBC.

Do you offer a summer program? We have

a huge summer program, where the children can dance from 9am 3pm, Monday to Friday. We also offer after care. Many children learn as much in this 6-week program as they do during the year-long program offered after school and on Saturdays.

Stella’s Dancers’ Studio is located at 9470 Griffin Road, in Cooper City. For information, visit www.stellasdancers.com or call 954-434-8401. Photos: Kim Ruoff Photography
