February is Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. It is an annual observance in the United States and Canada that celebrates the achievements and contributions of black individuals. First recognized in February of 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February as "Negro History Week."
Over the years, the celebration expanded to an entire month, and in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month. "I call upon the public and the press to recognize the important contributions of black history in the history of the United States," he said.
But the history of Black History Month extends even further back. In 1915, black community leaders in Chicago held the first "Negro History Week" to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Organized by a group known as the "Committee of Ten," which included prominent figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Carter G. Woodson.
Since its inception, Black History Month has been a time to recognize and honor the countless black leaders and activists who have made significant contributions to society. "A people without the knowledge of their history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots," said Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican-born black nationalist leader.
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to remember and recognize the struggles and triumphs of the black community. It is also a time to reflect on our progress and the work that still needs to be done toward racial equality.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) announced that it was awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant for more than $14 million. BCPS is one of 19 school districts in the nation and one of only three districts in Florida to receive funding in 2022.
The five-year grant will increase school choice options and support the implementation of a new Achieving Career Equity for Students (ACES) magnet theme in six schools. The ACES program focuses on career exploration, allowing students to participate in career-themed instructional models based on their interests and giving them the opportunity to connect their learning and experiences to future career aspirations. The program also provides a personalized learning environment that prepares students for the future through exposure to careers and post-secondary interactions.
Through the MSAP grant, BCPS will create three new, whole-school magnet programs at Oakland Park Elementary School, Mirror Lake Elementary School,
and James S. Rickards Middle School and significantly revise the magnet programs at Plantation Middle School, Plantation High School, and Northeast High School.
“The MSAP grant aligns with the District’s Strategic Plan and focuses on providing high-quality instruction to our students,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Vickie L. Cartwright. “Through the ACES project, schools will introduce innovative educational practices that allow students to meet high academic standards and prepare them for college and careers.”
The whole-school approach to magnet programs is key to ensuring equity as it
allows more than 6,000 students currently attending these schools to have access to high-interest, rigorous and meaningful program opportunities. This program also provides opportunities for approximately 1,900 additional seats beyond these schools’ boundaries.
Magnet schools are founded on the five pillars of diversity, innovative curriculum and professional development, academic excellence, high-quality instructional systems, and family and community partnerships. ▸ To learn more about BCPS’ Magnet Programs, visit browardschools.com/magnet.

The Florida Department of Education released graduation data for school systems across the state with positive news statewide and in Broward County last month. 87.2% of Broward County Public Schools seniors graduated following the 2021-22 school year. This is a 1% increase versus pre-pandemic levels and was in line with the state-wide graduation rate of 87.3%.
“Florida’s graduation rate is a direct result of the determination of
our students and the parents, school counselors, teachers, and district leaders who worked hard to ensure the 2022 Senior Class was ready for their next opportunities in life,” said State Board of Education Member Monesia Brown.
“Today’s increase in graduation rate for Broward County Public Schools is something we are very happy about, very proud of,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartright , “this was the result of our staff being
laser-focused on our students when they came back to brick and mortar instruction.”
Fort Lauderdale High School had a graduation rate of 99.2%, with 531 graduates, while 94.6% of Stranahan High School seniors graduated. ▸ Scan the QR Code or visit www.edudata.fldoe. org/AdvancedReprots. html for more information about your school.

ort Lauderdale is a popular South Florida location for many buyers and sellers, which is reflected in increasing sales prices for condominiums and luxury properties alike. However, market growth is expected to slow to a more normal pace throughout the next year. Factors like rising mortgage rates and inflation will create more cautious buyers in 2023, which sellers will have to consider when listing and pricing their properties. To contextualize what will happen in Fort Lauderdale next year, here’s an overview of what’s currently happening in Fort Lauderdale’s housing market.
For a snapshot of Fort Lauderdale’s real estate market today, review the statistics below. Then, read on to see how these numbers affect you as a buyer or seller.
▸ Fort Lauderdale homes have a median listing price of $725,000
▸ Homes in the $2-3 million price range average 39 days on the market, compared to 2021’s 123 days
▸ Single-family homes between $400600,000 decreased by 20% in the number of sales
▸ Median prices for single-family homes have increased by 18.4%
▸ Inventory for single-family homes is 1.9 months
▸ Inventory for condos is 1.7 months
The Fort Lauderdale real estate market
Currently, Fort Lauderdale leans in sellers’ favor due to insufficient supply and high demand. Inventory is slim for both single-family homes and condos at 1.9 months and 1.7 months, respectively. For a balanced market, this figure should be closer to six months. However, luxury options and ultra-luxury options do have a higher supply, which helps to drive sales in the sector. With low supply, sellers are increasing listing prices, which we see in the increase of median prices for single-family homes.
FEven though Fort Lauderdale is a seller’s market, sales for property types like single-family homes have recently decreased, likely due to limited inventory and economic factors. The cost of living in Fort Lauderdale is 21% higher than the national average, and housing expenses are 49% above the average. More sales in luxury sectors affect average housing expenses, and paired with rising interest rates and inflation, this limits buyer power for some people searching in the area.
There are a few things to keep an eye on if you’re planning to buy or sell Fort Lauderdale real estate in the upcoming year. Mortgage rates are likely to continue their high rates into 2023, ranging from anywhere between 5-7%. Although these rates may seem daunting to some, they have been much higher in the past. Additionally, inflation may have an impact on buying and selling. More expensive labor and materials are making the cost of new construction homes higher, which will likely last through the next year.
Other factors like supply issues are also something to keep in mind going into 2023. Supply chain issues are causing delays in building new construction homes, which means that low supply won’t replenish as quickly. On top of this, Broward County’s sales percentages outpace the state of Florida and the U.S. Although this trend is expected to continue through 2023, there are indications of it slowing as inventory in some areas is increasing.
Buyers
should be mindful of the effects of rising mortgage rates and the impacts of new construction delays. Florida’s average interest rates are currently 6.52% for a 30-year fixed loan and 5.70% for a 15-year fixed loan. These figures may be something to seriously consider, especially in conjunction with rising home prices continuing into the new year.
Those interested in new construction homes should brace for higher prices in the new year due to previously stated supply chain issues. Although it may seem difficult to find a property you’ll love in the area due to high demand and low supply, local and skilled agents like those on the Sklar Team
have a deep understanding of the listings available and can help you find a home that meets your needs.
Sellers in Fort Lauderdale looking into 2023 will likely continue to benefit from the area’s seller’s market conditions. With active listings currently on the decline in the county and inventory low, coupled with Fort Lauderdale’s desirable location, you can expect good offers when you list your property in 2023.
One thing sellers should keep their eye on is how quickly the market transitions going into 2023. While it’ll likely remain a seller’s market, it won’t maintain the high competition conditions that push buyers into bidding wars. Coupled with higher mortgage rates and inflation, this may create more cautious buyers. In 2023, make sure to price your property correctly to avoid scaring off buyers and increase your chances of a sale.
Investors in 2023 will continue benefiting from Fort Lauderdale’s growing population, fueled by buyers moving for job opportunities and great oceanside views, as well as business growth in the area. Investors already established in the area who are geared towards the tourist population during the summer can expect to continue benefiting from renters into the new year.
Investors looking to break into the rental sphere, especially by buying properties like condos, must be wary of rental oversaturation next year. Be sure that there’s a demand for your property type before investing. Rental rates in Fort Lauderdale are high, which creates opportunities for good investments into 2023. Another thing to be mindful of as a new investor is high-interest rates lasting into the new year. Be sure that your investment will pay for itself before buying.
Buyers and sellers in 2023 will feel the impacts of Fort Lauderdale’s insufficient inventory, rising costs, and national trends of rising interest rates and inflation. For help navigating the local market as a buyer or seller, contact one of the experienced agents on the Sklar Team to guide you through the process.

Taking flight in an airplane, or even walking onto an airplane is a fairly simple act most of us take for granted. But for those with special needs it often becomes yet another thing that sets them apart from others. But imagine if they could soar high – even for a few minutes. That’s the magic the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale has been bringing to kids for nearly 20 years through the annual Challenge Air project offering kids with various disabilities a day of fun and flight for them and their families.
Spearheaded by former Rotary Club president Terry Robinson, Challenge Air brings out the best in the community and serves the club’s mission of “Service Above Self.” Terry and a team of Rotary volunteers put together a core a private pilots who volunteer their time, talent and aircraft to provide individual short, private flights and a mini flight lesson for as many as 100+ kids. Rotary Volunteers line up local restaurants like Carrabba’s Italian Grill, who provide a free lunch to the families. Games, face painting, music and more are set up in the Executive Airport Banyan Air hangar to keep everyone amused as they wait their turn to take to the skies.
Originally created to change the perception of children with special needs through the gift flight, Challenge Air helps kids build confidence and self-esteem. “By eliminating the belief that they are limited, children can grow to their full potential and find courage within themselves,” notes Robinson. “Allowing the kids to see that if they can fly a plane, they can do anything, truly opens their minds to endless possibilities,” adds club president Jaye Abbate.
But it is the endless smiles on the faces of the children after their flights, and the tears of emotion shed by the parents and volunteers that prove what a powerful experience it is for all involved. “Our club does more than two dozen community projects each year. Whether working on projects for youth aging out of foster care, families in need, building a playground for disadvantaged youth or face-lifting a housing facility for folks in recovery, each small act helps enrich the lives of someone in need. “It also enriches our own lives,” says Abbate. “You empathize more with others, better understand the challenges they face and embracing the Rotary motto ‘Service Above Self’ becomes a way of life.”

I never oversee work if it is not done by a licensed professional as I always tell my clients to do it right the first time! Two important reasons, you should always hire a licensed professional for any repair or renovation:
Failure to obtain a permit before commencing a project can result in a penalty. The fees are set out in Section 109 of the Florida Building Code as authorized in Florida Statutes 553.80. Normally the fee imposed is double the normal permit fee! Lenders will REJECT applications and a homebuyer is entitled to sue previous homeowner for permit fees and all work to be done to bring project back to permitted!
If you plan to install, alter, repair, remove, convert, replace, any electrical, mechanical or plumbing systems, you need a permit. Unpermitted work will need to be corrected before you sell your property!
OH yes! Shutting off the main water valve to your house or condo will give you and extra protection layer against thousands of dollars in potential damages and clean ups. It doesn’t hurt to tell your neighbor upstairs to do the same if ever you hear that they are also planning to take an extended away trip! Many insurance claims come from water damages caused by higher floor neighbors.
Emergency TIP; it is important that all residents of the house be aware of the location of the main water valve to quickly shut it off, if any pipes burst or hoses from toilets or washer start leaking.
One important item to check when you do shut off your main valve is to make sure that this DOES NOT affect or stop the flow of water to your sprinkler system! Either contact your HOA or simply do actual test and run your sprinklers while the main valve is OFF, you’ll see!?
OFF, although it will not make you save hundreds of dollars, it still reduces your FPL bill and its life expectancy will obviously grow! If you plan to leave for more than a few weeks, I suggest you turn off the breaker and double check the drain and or pan around the heater to insure that if any leaks occur during your absence, water will be well contained!
Reminder that when you do return home, your HomeWatch expert turns it back on at least an hour before your arrival if you expect to take a nice hot shower when you walk in!

Hidden at the western edge of Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport is a hidden gem for history buffs looking to explore the rich military heritage of South Florida. It is the former home of Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, which was established in 1942, and played a vital role in World War II and the Cold War.
The Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum is open to the public on a daily basis and showcases the history of naval aviation in South Florida. The museum features exhibits on the base's history, including aircraft, uniforms, and other artifacts from World War II and the Cold War. Visitors can also see a replica of a World War II-era control tower and restored barracks.
In 1942, the U.S. Navy selected Merle Fogg Airport in Fort Lauderdale to expand into a naval air station for both pilot and enlisted aircrew training (i.e., gunners, radiomen) in Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers flown by carrier-based US Navy flight crews and by land-based US Marine Corps flight crews ashore. Additional facilities were used to train aircraft maintenance and other ground crew support for the TBF and TBM series aircraft. Among the Avenger pilots who graduated NAS Fort Lauderdale was former President George H. W. Bush, who went on to a distinguished flying career, and of course, a political career as well.
The Museum has been instrumental in preserving the memory of Flight 19, one of the great aviation mysteries. Flight 19 flew out of NAS Fort Lauderdale on 5 December 1945, to vanish into the Bermuda Triangle. On exhibit at the museum are the Link Trainer Flight Simulator, original paintings, cartoons, lithographs, drawings and photographs, vintage ship and aircraft models, the John Payne Memorial Library, which contains more
than 3,000 volumes from military history along with WWII torpedoes, A Grumman TDF Avenger aircraft, WW II anti-aircraft guns and much more. NAS Fort Lauderdale is a hidden gem for history buffs looking to explore the rich military heritage of South Florida. If you get to the airport a little early, be sure to check it out.
If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.
Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.
With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.
Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.
Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from this
groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner.
Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”
Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com

hen hitting into a headwind, your shots carry shorter, fly higher and come down at a steeper landing angle due to the extra lift and drag the headwind causes. Under calm conditions, the air is moving into the ball at the same speed the ball is traveling.
When there is a tailwind, the wind speed subtracts from the airflow. When there is a headwind, the wind speed adds to the airflow. The greater the speed of the headwind, the more lift and drag is produced. The higher airflow into the ball causes more lift (what makes the ball rise) and more drag (what slows the ball down) causing the ball to balloon into the air. It’s a common misconception that the ball spins more when hit into the wind. It’s actually the added lift when hit into the airflow that gives this false impression. However, more spin is the enemy when hitting into the wind as more spin creates more lift and more drag and a resultant ballooning ball flight that winds up short of the target. Instead of swinging harder into the wind, usually resulting in more club head speed and more spin, use a club with less loft which will help you reduce the spin and optimize the flight of the ball into the wind.
The opposite is true with a tailwind. If you hit a shot with too little spin when downwind, the ball will drop out of the sky too soon and fall short of the target. Remember, a tailwind will produce shots that carry longer, fly lower and roll more
Wonce they land due to decrease amount of lift on the ball. Your best bet downwind is to launch the ball higher so that it will fly higher, carry longer and land more softly. The relationship between the lift and drag do not behave linearly, and that is why a headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps.
Now that you know how the relationship between headwinds and tailwinds affects the golf ball, here is a general tip for calculating how many yards to add or subtract on a given shot. Throw up a few pieces of grass and pay attention to how far away from you the grass lands. For a tailwind, add two yards of extra distance to how far your shot will go for each yard that the wind blows the grass toward the target. For a headwind, subtract four yards of carry for each yard the wind blows the grass away from the target. This general rule with help you estimate which club to use when playing into a headwind or when playing downwind.
Whenever I am on the course and feel a stiff wind in my face I automatically take two extra clubs. For example, from the 150 yard marker when it would be a 7 iron in distance, I would now select a 5 iron and make a nice easy smooth swing knowing that I have enough club selected and that my ball will bore through the heavy wind on target with just the right amount of distance.
The same goes for when I am faced with the same distance and I have 150 yards to the green and a strong gusty wind is at my back. I take a 9 iron to compensate for the wind and the ball has a much higher trajectory, whereas the wind carries it right on target with the proper amount of distance as well.
