Enjoy a Pint at Tarpon River Brewing Where Everyone Feels at Home
Tarpon River Brewing is a unique new gastropub with a full line of craft beer made on-site, and a mouth-watering, beer-inspired food menu. The brewery is nestled between the Tarpon River and the New River, which have served as the lifeline of the Fort Lauderdale local community for generations.
Tarpon River Brewing was born three years ago as a partnership between Julian and Lisa Siegel of the Riverside Market and Adam and Jill Fine, owners of Native Brewing and Fresh Beer. Building a brewery was but a dream in those days and as a group, they came together, unconventionally, yet successfully to open up Tarpon River Brewing. To this day, unconventional has served them well and has become a part of their mantra!
The building was originally an 11,000-square-foot horse barn, called the Snyder Stables built in 1929. Within the historic space, there is a 1,000-square-foot house that serves as a taproom, tasting room, brewery, and kitchen.
This home away from home, built by locals, for locals includes a complete brewing system just outside the tasting room. Guests can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere with a beer in hand, and see precisely how their drink was made. Tarpon River’s tap list is as diverse as the owners of the brewery are. It ranges from golden ales to hoppy IPAs, dark lagers to fruited sours, and big stouts to wild ales.
They offer brews to satisfy everyone from the beginner beer drinker to the eccentric beer snob.
Special Events
Tarpon River Brewing is a fantastic place to host an event. The private room is spacious yet comfortable and offers a casual
atmosphere to visit with friends. The launch party for Our City Fort Lauderdale was held there. Visit their website, www. tarponriverybrewing.com to book your party today.
The brewery also frequently hosts fun events. A couple of our favorites are Thursday night trivia and their Monday evening “Gears & Beers” bike ride. The bike ride is for beer lovers and bike lovers. It is a 10-15 mile ride around Fort Lauderdale that begins and ends at the brewery. Participants get a free beer!
Happy Hour
Happy Hour is 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm at Tarpon River Brewing’s bar. All draft beer is $2 off and all glasses of wine are $1 off. They also offer beer-inspired “bar foods” to snack on including onion rings, hummus & pita, loaded french fries, or a giant pretzel.
Sunday Brunch
Sunady brunch is served 11:30 am - 4:00 pm. In addition to their regular menu items, a number of brunch specials are on offer. Our favorites are the Chicken and Waffles with maple drizzle, shrimp & grits and breakfast burrito. In addition to their extensive selection of beers, Mimosa and “Beerosa” are available by the glass or, for $15, unlimited.
■ Tarpon River Brewing is located at 280 SW 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale. They are open 11:30 am - 10:00 pm MondayWednesday, 11:30 am - 11:00 pm Thursday, 11:30 am - Midnight, Friday, 11:00 am - Midnight Saturday and 11:00 am - 10:00 pm on Sundays. Visit them at www. TarponRiverBrewing.com or call 954-353-3193 for pickup.

Spring Returns Making Old New Again
As we enter the fourth month of the year, we can feel the energy of new beginnings and fresh starts that come with the arrival of spring.
The start of spring represents a time of renewal, growth, and rejuvenation. The sun shines brighter, the flowers bloom, and the air feels lighter. It is a time to let go of the old and embrace the new, to take a deep breath and start afresh.
As poet and writer, Rainer Maria Rilke once said, "And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been." This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of spring - a time for new experiences, new beginnings, and new possibilities.
As publishers, we believe that spring is the perfect time to start something new. Whether it's a new hobby, a new project, or a new goal, this season offers the perfect opportunity to turn over a new leaf and embark on a new adventure.
The coming of spring reminds us that summer is just around the corner. South Florida offers a plethora of summer activities for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this issue for a curated list of camp options for your kiddos!
We hope that this issue will motivate you to start something new and to embrace the beauty of the season. Let this be the month that you shed the old and welcome the new. After all, as Rilke reminds us, "spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems." Let us embrace the poetry of the season and revel in the joy of new beginnings.
Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Easter Sunday
Happy Easter to all of Our City’s Christian readers. Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For Christians, the holiday represents the triumph of Jesus over death and sin and the promise of eternal life. The week leading up to Easter Sunday, known as Holy Week, includes special services and observances such as Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
Wishing a happy Passover holiday to all of our Jewish readers. Passover is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is celebrated for seven or eight days, depending on the Jewish tradition. The holiday is marked by a number of rituals and customs, the most well-known of which is the Seder. The Seder is a festive meal that takes place on the first night of Passover, during which the story of the Exodus is retold and special foods, such as matzo and bitter herbs, are eaten. The holiday is a time for family gatherings, reflection, and gratitude for freedom and deliverance.

Federal Income Tax Filing Deadline
Don’t forget to file your tax return (or request an extension). All United States taxpayers are required to file a return with the Internal Revenue Service that shows their income from last year. Did you know that the Federal income tax was first introduced in 1861 as a way to help pay for the Civil War? The original law was subsequently found to be unconstitutional and revoked. The Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reinstated the national income tax in 1913.

The 1.2-acre DC Alexander Park on Fort Lauderdale Beach is set to undergo a transformation that will make it a more vibrant and welcoming space for both locals and visitors. Currently a modest green area with palm trees and limited parking, the oceanfront park is ideally located between Seabreeze Boulevard and A1A, just south of SE 5th Street. It is also conveniently situated across the street from the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, where a renovation project began in late February.
On February 15, 2023, Mayor Dean Trantalis and executives from Shiff
Construction & Development joined members of the City Commission for a groundbreaking ceremony to initiate the project.
Over the next year, the park will be enhanced with a range of improvements designed to increase its appeal, including an elevated section that offers views of the ocean, a new playground, improved pedestrian lighting, and other features to enhance the beauty of the city. The area's beloved Whispering Giant sculpture will be preserved, and new landscaping will inject fresh energy into the park.
This new vision for DC Alexander Park is part of the City's commitment to creating a healthy and engaging community, as well as improving access to and enjoyment of the beach, waterways, parks, and open spaces for all residents and visitors. Fort Lauderdale takes pride in offering high-quality parks and recreational facilities that showcase the character of the city.

2023 FORT LAUDERDALE AIRSHOW IS SET TO TAKE FLIGHT
Fort Lauderdale Beach, April 29 & 30
If you “feel the need for speed” then head to Fort Lauderdale Beach on the last weekend of April and look to the skies. The Fort Lauderdale Air, one of the most anticipated aviation events in the country, will be on full display. It showcases the best of military and civilian aircraft, as well as thrilling aerobatic performances and skydiving stunts. If you are a fan of flying machines and adrenaline-pumping action, you won’t want to miss this spectacular show over the Atlantic Ocean.
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show will take place on April 29th and 30th. The show will start around 11:45 am and end around 3:00 pm each day. The center of the show will be located at Sunrise Boulevard and A1A, but you can enjoy the aerial displays from anywhere along the four miles of Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Some of the performers that have been announced so far include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the F-22 Raptor Demo Team, the Red Bull Helicopter, the Red Bull Air Force, Kirby Chambliss, the SOCOM Para-Commandos, the Air Force Heritage Flight, the T-38 Talon and Michael Goulian24. More performers will be added as the show date approaches, so stay tuned for updates.
If you want to have the best viewing experience, you can purchase tickets for one of the VIP or premium viewing areas. These areas offer reserved seat-
ing, shaded tents, catering, beverages, private restrooms, and other amenities. You can also opt for a sandbox, which is a private area on the beach for up to six people with chairs and umbrellas. Parking for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show can be challenging due to limited spaces and high demand. The best option is to use public transportation or ride-sharing services to get to the beach. You can also park at one of the designated parking garages or lots and take a shuttle bus to the show site. Parking passes are available online for
advance purchase.
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show is more than just a show. It is a celebration of aviation history, technology, and skill. It is also a tribute to the men and women who serve in our armed forces and protect our freedom. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness some of the most amazing flying machines in action over one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida.

MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING: A GROWING TREND IN MODERN SOCIETY
here is a new trend in town: Multi-generational living. We are moving from the “me” generation to the “us” generation. One of the main reasons for the growing trend in multi-generational living is changing economic conditions. With the rising cost of living, many families find it difficult to afford their own homes, especially in desirable areas with high housing costs. By pooling their resources and living under one roof, multiple generations can save money on housing expenses and share other expenses such as utilities, food, and transportation.
Another reason for the popularity of multi-generational living is the desire for more family support and closeness. In many cultures, family is highly valued. The role of extended family is often emphasized. By living together, family members can provide emotional support to each other, as well as share in the joys and challenges of everyday life. This type of living can also be
By Rose Sklar
Tbeneficial for children. Children who grow up in multi-generational households may have more opportunities for learning and growth, as they can interact with people of different ages and backgrounds. They may also have a greater sense of security and stability as they have more people to rely on for care and support.
“The number of Americans who live in multi-generational family households is about four times larger than in the 1970s, according to a March Pew Research Center report. As of March 2021, there were 59.7 million U.S. residents who lived with multiple generations under one roof.” Mark Gordon, The Observer
How do you select a home that will set your family up for success?
A place to age safely. Dedicate one floor or wing for older adults — without stairs. Wide hallways and doorways are a plus. Define personal spaces with separate suites. Ideally, each suite should have separate entrances and ensuite bathrooms in a multi-generational home. A living room and
kitchenette per suite create even more privacy. Incorporate flexible spaces: Flex or bonus rooms can be used as workout rooms or office spaces — separate from the common areas of the rest of the house, giving all residents ample room to have the space they need.
Many baby boomers and their parents anticipate assisted living or moving in with their children. This is a challenge for everyone. The good news is many savvy builders across the country are now embracing this new trend and are building homes with Multi-generational suites, flex spaces with private entrances, kitchenettes, and more, while still allowing access to the main house.
What if you love the home you are in?
Reconfiguring your current home to accommodate this growing need is becoming more common. It can be a wise investment for families looking to save money and stay close.
Is multi-generational living the right move for your family?

SHARE THE BEACH! IT'S SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON
If you love sea turtles, you’re in luck! Hollywood is one of the best places to witness these amazing creatures as they lay their eggs on the sandy shores. Sea turtle nesting season runs from March 1 to October 31, and you might spot three different types of turtles: leatherbacks, loggerheads, and greens. Leatherbacks are the largest and rarest of sea turtles, weighing up to 2,000 pounds and measuring up to 8 feet long. They are the first to arrive on the beaches, usually in early March1. Loggerheads are the most common sea turtles that nest in Florida, with reddish-brown shells and powerful jaws. They start nesting in April and can lay up to 100 eggs per nest2. Greens are named for their greenish skin color and have a smooth shell with no scales. They nest from May to June and can lay up to 200 eggs per nest.
Sea turtles are endangered species and need our help to survive. If you find a nesting site, please follow these tips:
• Do not touch or disturb the turtle or the eggs. Keep your distance and observe quietly.
• Do not use flashlights or flash photography. Bright lights can scare or confuse the turtle and prevent her from nesting or returning to the sea.
• Do not leave trash or debris on the beach. These can harm or entangle the turtle or her hatchlings.
• Turn off or shield any artificial lights near the beach at night. Lights can disorient hatchlings and make them crawl away from the sea instead of towards it.
• Report any injured or dead turtles to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-FWCC.
You can also support sea turtle conservation by volunteering with local organizations, such as Sea Turtle Oversight Protection (STOP) or Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program.
Sea turtles are amazing animals that have been around for millions of years. Let’s help them thrive for many more by respecting their nesting season and protecting their habitat.

BAYVIEW ELEMENTARY STUDENTS DONATE TEDDY BEARS FOR KIDS FACING TRAUMA
Bayview Elementary School students gave away teddy bears as a tribute to a young boy who passed away nearly two years ago after a small plane collided with the car he was in. Taylor Bishop, a four-year-old, was carrying his beloved teddy bear named Chevy at the time of the crash, which became a treasured possession for his mother, Megan Bishop. The donation took place at the end of February in a touching tribute to the lost boy.
The donation of these teddy bears in honor of Taylor's memory was an idea inspired by Chevy, which Megan Bishop believes was a sign from God to carry out her son's legacy.
“I don’t even know if I will ever be able to put into words what that meant to me because I knew when I received the bear my son had passed,” commented Megan, “so just having the bear back gave me some sense of comfort because he loved him so much.”
The teddy bears will be distributed to children in need of comfort by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, as first responders have found that they often serve as an icebreaker during critical incidents.
Sergeant Nicole Graves expressed appreciation for the donations and assured that the teddy bears would
be put to good use, “When you go into a critical incident and you have a teddy bear, that’s your ice breaker,” Sgt. Nicole Graves said. “Trust me, we’re going to put these teddy bears to use.”

HOMEWATCHING: HOW TO SUMMER-IZE YOUR HOME
Here is your checklist to get your home or condo ready for the summer months…whether you’re a SNOWBIRD or not!
As a member of the National Home Watch Association, I felt this month of April is the month, when so many snowbirds are on their way up north, to review some important topics to safeguard your residence, that we monitor when your away!
Florida’s tropical summer climate makes humidity control, flood protection and mold and mildew prevention three areas of concern for every Florida homeowner – whether you are gone for the season or just a month or two.
Check Your Electricity and Water Bills for Unusual Variances
Monitor your usage while you are away and check for any unusual changes in energy usage. For example, a variance in your electric bill could indicate an appliance or A/C malfunction.
Humidity
Summer in Florida means oppressive heat and very high levels of humidity. Nearly everything in your Florida home is vulnerable to the effects of high humidity, which causes: rusting appliances; mold and mildew growth; corrosion to electronic equipment and computers; deterioration to wood, cotton and leather; warping of woodwork; musty odors; insect infestation; and flaking paint and peeling wallpaper. Normal humidity levels are between 30
By Russell Miller
and 50 percent. You can control humidity levels in your home and inhibit the growth of mold and mildew by blocking outside moisture and minimizing indoor moisture by:
Remote Monitoring: To check the temperature and humidity levels in your Florida residence while you are away, consider installing a remote thermostat control. These devices allow you to monitor your home’s “vitals” via phone or computer and make temperature adjustments from afar. They also send out automatic alerts to your phone or email address if the inside temperature gets too high or too low, based on your set points.
Remember that hurricane season hits in the summer and fall, bringing torrential rain and high winds, along with the risk of leaks and flooding. Flood-risk location is the condensate pan in your A/C unit which can clog and overflow. A simple float switch connected to your remote monitoring system can be used to monitor this. Florida’s warm, humid weather creates the perfect environment for mold, mildew and bacteria to grow. Since pests and organisms attack organic materials, it is important to do a thorough job cleaning, vacuuming and disinfecting your home before you vacate.
A/C settings and mold prevention
Change your A/C filter. If it is washable, then wash it. An accumulation of dirt plus the summer heat and humidity can lead to mildew and mold growth, which can spread through the house.
If your thermostat is programmable then set it to run at 72 degrees for a few hours then to 80 for the remainder of a 24-hour cycle. If it is not programmable, then set to 78-80 degrees. Set the controls of your humidistats and/or dehumidifiers to 58 percent RH (relative humidity) to maintain acceptable humidity.
Other items like appliances and cable boxes can be shut down while you’re away.
Ice Palm is a one-stop shop for modern concierge services based in Fort Lauderdale. We provide a wide array of services for Snowbird Owners and Investors. Ice-Palm does HomeWatching while property is vacant, supervises house cleaning, renovations and other vendors. For peace of mind while you’re away, the Ice-Palm Team is there while you’re not!
Call 954-239-7176 or Canada 514-827-3666 www.ice-palm.com
Cable boxes: Unplug them. Water heater: Turn off the circuit breaker to the water heater. Small appliances like Dishwasher and washing machine: Empty them Leave the lid/door open. Refrigerator: set it at its warmest setting and automatic ice maker, switched to the “off” position. Make sure all smoke alarms are working and have fresh batteries.
Turn off the main water valve unless you have an automatic fire-sprinkler system. If you do, turn off the water valves to your washing machine, kitchen and bathroom sinks, dishwasher and toilets.
Ask your Homewatch expert to check on your property every 2 weeks for problems that could pop up, such as plumbing leaks or storm damage. Make sure he or she has your emergency contact information.
Use shades and curtains: Use shades, blinds, and curtains to block out the hot sun. Ceiling fans can help circulate air and keep your home cool without relying solely on your air conditioning unit. Make sure your ceiling fans are turning counterclockwise to create a cooling effect. Clean your gutters: Summer in Florida can bring heavy rains, so it's important to make sure your gutters are clean and free of debris. Insulate your attic: Insulating your attic can help keep your home cooler by preventing hot air from entering your home through the roof. Stop newspaper/mail deliveries. Bon Voyage !

I NT E R N A T I O N A L CONCIERGE & CONSULTING SERVICES 30 / Our City Fort Lauderdale / April 2023 / OurCityMedia.com ■ ASK THE EXPERT
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
An estate plan consultation is your chance to meet a lawyer to discuss your goals and concerns for your family’s future. During that meeting, you may review your assets and who you wish would receive them upon your death. Your attorney will point out other issues frequently arising in estate planning, such as taxes and possible disagreements between beneficiaries. Any previous estate planning documents should be reviewed, and the lawyer can advise you on how to change or update them to make sure they still meet your needs and goals.
Estate planning is a very personal and highly customizable process, and there are many unique estate planning strategies depending on your needs. Every family is different, and a "one-size-fits-all" approach to estate planning is not appropriate. Some people may have unique assets, such as art collections or cryptocurrency, that require special planning considerations. Others may have specific family dynamics or charitable goals that need to be addressed in their estate plan, while others want to minimize tax liabilities.
Here are a few unique planning strategies that an experienced estate planning attorney may utilize.
▸ Incentive Trusts: These provide financial motivations to your heirs for achieving certain goals or milestones. This can be a useful estate planning tool to ensure that your children are financially responsible, educated or leading a healthy lifestyle.
▸ Pet Trusts - Some people set up a trust for their pets, with specific instructions for their care and well-being. This includes appointing a guardian for the pet, providing for food and medical care, and even specifying burial arrangements for the pet.
▸ Charitable Giving: Some individuals include charitable giving as part of their estate plan. A charitable remainder trust can also be used to donate assets to a charitable organization while still retaining an income stream from those assets during your lifetime.
▸ Legacy Planning and Ethical Wills: These involve creating a plan for passing down your values, beliefs, and traditions to future generations. It may include writing a family history, creating a time capsule, and passing down personal mementos and other sentimental items. They aren’t legally binding but can be a meaningful way to share your thoughts and feelings with your children.
▸ Business Succession Planning: If you own a business, it's essential to create a plan for what will happen to the business if you become incapacitated or after you pass away. This could mean choosing a successor or making a buy-sell agreement to make sure the change of ownership goes smoothly.
▸ Family Heirlooms: Family heirlooms and sentimental items can be passed down to future generations. (Of course, kids don’t value chinaware or figurines like previous generations!)
▸ Trusts for Special Needs Individuals: Trusts can be established to provide ongoing financial support for those with special needs without jeopardizing their eligibility for government benefits. These are just a few examples of the many unique and interesting estate planning strategies that are available. An experienced estate planning attorney can help you create a plan that meets your specific wishes, personal objectives and unique family dynamics.

“Truffles”
came to me when her owner passed away, fourteen years ago in New York. Truffles prefers life in Florida where this African Leopard tortoise can enjoy her days outside. She loves arugula strawberry salads and ripe juicy tomatoes. Her igloo home (really a cat condo, but we don’t tell her that!) provides a comfy shelter from rain and sun. Truffles looks forward to the next 100 years

Two Invaluable Putting Tips
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Putting using a name or line on your ball can really help in setting you on the correct path line. The key is to use your dominant eye so you will not struggle in correctly lining up your ball.
First, to determine your dominant eye, hold both hands out in front of you clasped together and create a small hole to look at the flag. Close one eye at a time to determine which eye is still able to see the flag. The eye that you see the flag with is your dominant eye and you will want to use that eye in lining up your ball.
If you are left eye dominant you will want to aim your ball line with your left hand. If right eye dominant, use your right hand to aim your ball line at the target. Use the same hand to increase the odds of getting the ball directly in line between your dominant eye and the target. You should now find it much easier to aim the ball directly at the target.
Once your ball is all lined up, go set up to the ball and make sure the clubface alignment matches the balls. Now you are ready to stoke it at your target. Trust your aim, begin focusing on your speed and you will become a better putter. If you are having difficulty matching your putter to the line (so it feels like you are aiming at your target), you may want to change your set-up until they match.
Check to see if your eye is directly over the ball. Think about why this is so important. When you line up to putt you want to see the direct line from the ball to the intended target. In this case, it’s the hole that you are putting the ball into. Set up to putt with your normal putting stance over the ball and place a ball under your eye. Now you want to release that ball to see if it lands directly on top of the ball that you are using to putt into the hole. If the ball lands before it, you are standing too far away. If the ball lands past the ball to the right, you are standing too close. Keep trying this test to make sure your eye is directly over it with the ball always landing directly on top of it. You will be surprised how you need to make the proper adjustment to get the eye directly over the ball and see the right line that you are stroking the putter head on the same path your eyes see it.
As always, see your local teaching Professional for a putting lesson. No one knows the game better than them.
