Tarpon River Brewing is a unique new gastropub with a full line of craft beer made on-site, and a mouth-watering, beer-inspired food menu. The brewery is nestled between the Tarpon River and the New River, which have served as the lifeline of the Fort Lauderdale local community for generations.
Tarpon River Brewing was born three years ago as a partnership between Julian and Lisa Siegel of the Riverside Market and Adam and Jill Fine, owners of Native Brewing and Fresh Beer. Building a brewery was but a dream in those days and as a group, they came together, unconventionally, yet successfully to open up Tarpon River Brewing. To this day, unconventional has served them well and has become a part of their mantra!
The building was originally an 11,000-square-foot horse barn, called the Snyder Stables built in 1929. Within the historic space, there is a 1,000-square-foot house that serves as a taproom, tasting room, brewery, and kitchen.
This home away from home, built by locals, for locals includes a complete brewing system just outside the tasting room. Guests can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere with a beer in hand, and see precisely how their drink was made. Tarpon River’s tap list is as diverse as the owners of the brewery are. It ranges from golden ales to hoppy IPAs, dark lagers to fruited sours, and big stouts to wild ales.
They offer brews to satisfy everyone from the beginner beer drinker to the eccentric beer snob.
Tarpon River Brewing is a fantastic place to host an event. The private room is spacious yet comfortable and offers a casual
atmosphere to visit with friends. The launch party for Our City Fort Lauderdale was held there. Visit their website, www. tarponriverybrewing.com to book your party today.
The brewery also frequently hosts fun events. A couple of our favorites are Thursday night trivia and their Monday evening “Gears & Beers” bike ride. The bike ride is for beer lovers and bike lovers. It is a 10-15 mile ride around Fort Lauderdale that begins and ends at the brewery. Participants get a free beer!
Happy Hour is 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm at Tarpon River Brewing’s bar. All draft beer is $2 off and all glasses of wine are $1 off. They also offer beer-inspired “bar foods” to snack on including onion rings, hummus & pita, loaded french fries, or a giant pretzel.
Sunady brunch is served 11:30 am - 4:00 pm. In addition to their regular menu items, a number of brunch specials are on offer. Our favorites are the Chicken and Waffles with maple drizzle, shrimp & grits and breakfast burrito. In addition to their extensive selection of beers, Mimosa and “Beerosa” are available by the glass or, for $15, unlimited.
■ Tarpon River Brewing is located at 280 SW 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale. They are open 11:30 am - 10:00 pm MondayWednesday, 11:30 am - 11:00 pm Thursday, 11:30 am - Midnight, Friday, 11:00 am - Midnight Saturday and 11:00 am - 10:00 pm on Sundays. Visit them at www. As Independence Day approaches, we want to give a “shout out” to the 2.2 million men and women serving in the United States military. While we don’t see them often, it is reassuring to know that these brave people are across the globe serving their country.
It is a little-known fact that our Navy, Army, and Marine Corps are older than the country itself. The Continental Congress formed all three service branches after hostilities began against England in 1775. In fact, the very first military unit of the United States was essentially a bunch of farmers.
The “shot heard round the world” at the Battle of Lexington and Concord occurred 15 months before the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The battle was fought by local militia members known as Minutemen. They were mostly farmers, tradesmen, and ordinary citizens who took up arms to defend their rights and resist British forces. They were also the beginning of what would become the most powerful force in human history.
The minutemen were quite the rag-tag group. Each man (they were all men then) brought his own musket, clothing, and gear. They elected their Captain, John Parker, who famously said, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”
The minutemen have few similarities to today’s high-tech and highly disciplined armed forces. Today’s forces, however, do hold the same values of selflessness, honor, loyalty, duty, patriotism, and courage that those few hundred men from Massachusetts held 247 years ago.
With the war in Ukraine, violence in the Balkans, and increasing tensions with China, today’s service members are asked to deal with complex situations in distant lands. About 173,000 people are serving abroad, and about 50,000 Marines and Sailors are at sea. When you grab a cold one this July 4th, raise your glass to the minutemen and today’s Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guardsman, and Guardians.
Happy Independence Day!

The National Civic League announced that the City of Fort Lauderdale is the 2023 All-America City Hall of Fame Inductee last month.
After being named an All-America City in 2014, Fort Lauderdale was recognized for its collaborative engagement surrounding the May 2022 establishment of the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center in the city's oldest African American community - Historic Sistrunk.
Uniquely situated in Fort Lauderdale’s Northwest District Area, Historic Sistrunk is a residential community comprised of working families, mom and pop small businesses, historic churches, and landmarks. Historic Sistrunk has stood at the center of African American culture and heritage in Fort Lauderdale since the earliest recorded settlers migrated from Georgia, South Carolina, and the Bahamas more than 100 years ago. Many were railroad workers who settled in shanties along the railroad tracks before
the turn of the twentieth century. After the tracks and stations were completed, some found other work and were residents at the time of Fort Lauderdale’s incorporation as a city in 1911.
Sistrunk Boulevard, a main thoroughfare, which spans Historic Sistrunk from its eastern to western boundaries is named in honor of pioneering Black physician, Dr. James Franklin Sistrunk. Dr. Sistrunk and Dr. Von D. Mizell were the founders of Provident Hospital, Broward County’s first Black hospital.
Like elsewhere in the segregated United States, a close-knit Black community emerged to provide living essentials, share values of hard work, integrity and faith, and courageously advocate for full participation for all citizens in the American dream. However, after desegregation, Sistrunk Boulevard steadily declined from the once-vibrant "Main Street” of the city's black community to a blighted area plagued by crime.
Officials from the City of Fort Lauderdale created the Fort Lauderdale Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to revitalize the areas near downtown Fort Lauderdale and Northwest Fort Lauderdale. The dedicated agency utilizes ear-marked property tax dollars to reinvest in a myriad of projects that reflect the goals and objectives of its Community Redevelopment Plan.
The CRA sought to establish the L.A. Lee YMCA-Mizell Community Center to enhance the area and activity on the commercial corridor.
The L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center was created through a collaboration with the YMCA, the City of Fort Lauderdale, and community partners. The YMCA of South Florida sought and received $10 million in funding assistance from the Fort Lauderdale CRA to provide funding towards debt service for the construction and development of the state-of-the-art community center. Due to the CRA’s fund-
ing of $10 million the YMCA was successful in obtaining a construction loan to finance the project.
Additionally, Broward College, which leases 10,000 square feet of space in the facility, provides GED and job readiness training and job placement services for residents of the redevelopment area in-demand industry sectors. The YMCA project has also provided numerous pre and post construction jobs. Of these positions approximately 50% are residents of the CRA area.
Since opening in May 2022, the development of the new L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center project has addressed various local issues in the CRA area. The addition of the stateof-the-art community center on Sistrunk Boulevard has eliminated a vacant property on the commercial corridor. The much-needed activity also discourages homelessness, illegal dumping, and criminal activities.
Fort Lauderdale is the sixth Hall of Fame Award Inductee. The National Civic League created the All-America City - Hall of Fame Award in 2019 to celebrate the ongoing work of past All-America Cities. The award recognizes communities that have implemented a community-driven initiative that resulted in significant local impact due to community engagement.
When Broward College student Jean Saintgeorges was awarded the 2023 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship, he received hundreds of messages of congratulations. Friends, faculty, and family were proud of his achievement: a scholarship worth up to $55,000 per year for use toward tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees to complete his bachelor’s degree. But while many were impressed, few were surprised.
After all, to everyone who knew him, Jean was already the kind of high-achieving
individual who had the ability to impact lives and change the world around him. At Broward College, he arrived with a desire to make a difference — in his own life and in the lives of others. Broward College simply showed him the way.
Where do we go from here?
Jean is passionate about math, business, and accounting. He hopes to take his academic excellence and community service passions to a university where he can earn a bachelor’s degree in
Accounting and a master’s in Business Administration. He aspires to be a certified public accountant and work in the private sector before owning his own accounting firm. No matter which university he decides to attend, he is confident he will be able to navigate life’s uncertainties
and overcome any obstacle that stands in his way. Broward College helped him prove he’s capable of anything.

On Jun 7, 2023 35-year old Lionel Messi announced to the world that he was moving to South Florida to join Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami. The move sent a tidal wave across the soccer and sporting worlds, putting an exclamation point on an unprecedented sporting season in South Florida. We will have to wait to see what effects the biggest star of the world’s most popular sport will have on the local community, but they will likely be long-lasting.
Lionel Messi’s global popularity is hard to grasp. He moved from his native Argentina to Barcelona when he was just 13 years old and won the first of seven Ballon d’Or trophies, given to the best soccer player in the world, at 22.
His teams have won La Liga titles and European Champions League trophies. Last year he led Argentina in its quest to recapture a World Cup. He is the highest-paid athlete in history. He is likely the most recognized athlete competing in the world today.
Messi has 100 million more Instagram followers than there are people living in the United States. He has more social media followers than everyone in the NFL, combined.
Inter Miami
The signing of Messi was as much a league signing as it was an Inter Miami signing. As of this writing, details of his deal are still being worked out. However, it is believed that an ownership interest in the club, along with profit-sharing
from merchandising and broadcast partners Adidas and Apple, will be part of the deal. While Messi will become the highest-paid player in MLS history, his earnings are a fraction of the reported $1 Billion+ offered to him by the Saudi Pro League.
Messi’s joining Inter Miami was the culmination of a project that began shortly after David Beckham and his partners were awarded the MLS’s 25th franchise in 2018. Beckham and Messi are two of global soccer’s biggest stars and have known each other since Messi was a young boy. In a way, Messi is following in Beckham’s footsteps in his move to the United States just as Beckham followed the great Pelé, who played for the now-defunct New York Cosmos in the mid-1970s.
Messi has 100 million more Instagram followers than there are people living in the United States.
Inter Miami will continue to call DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale home for through the 2024 season. You might just see the "Atomic Flea" in the neighborhood.
There is already a great deal of speculation about where Messi and his family will live when they move to South Florida. He is believed to own an apartment in the Porsche Design building in Sunny Isles Beach, with three young sons, he may looking west to Spanish-friendly and family-friendly communities like Weston.
"I had offers from other European cubs but I didn't even consider them because my idea was to go to Barcelona, and if it didn't work out, analyzing it, I'd leave European soccer,” Messi said, “especially after winning the World Cup, which was what I was missing to close out my career on this side and experience the league in the United States…, another way and enjoy the day-to-day… of wanting to win and do the right thing, just with more tranquility."
Stephen Foster Elementary School is ending this school year with excitement now that the media center renovations are complete. This is a significant accomplishment for the school, and it advances Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) SMART Bond Program towards its goal of renovating 100 media centers across the school district. The SMART Bond Program focuses on improvements in the areas of Safety, Music & Art, Athletics, Renovation, and Technology (SMART).
“The media center was outdated in terms of furniture, aesthetics, and color scheme. It looked like it had been used. The original furniture was wooden blocks. Very hard furniture. The paint was a standard yellow with blue or pink. From a decorative perspective, it was outdated,” said Principal Ricardo Grimaldo, who played a key role in the renovation design process, with a focus on creating a welcoming and comfortable space for students and teachers.
The media center serves as the main gathering place of the school, in the absence of an auditorium. Parent-teacher meetings, recognitions and awards ceremonies, staff meetings, staff appreciation events, and more, all take place in Stephen Foster Elementary’s media center. That makes this renovation vital for the entire school community.
But the media center isn’t the only renovation for Stephen Foster Elementary. “There were functional issues like ceiling tiles, the roof, and air conditioning. Those were things you don’t see, but on a rainy day, we would have a leak, occasionally,” Grimaldo said.
Upgrades to their fire alarm system, roofing, and HVAC systems, plus the replacement of the aluminum-covered walkway are expected to be completed by the end of this year and are part of the more than $5 million investment on the school campus.
The voter-approved SMART Bond Program has made a significant contribution to the well-being of the students and staff of Broward County Public Schools by investing approximately $1.4 billion in enhancing the educational experience. To keep track of the developments at Stephen Foster Elementary and other schools throughout the district, visit bcpssmartfutures.com.
It's that time of the year again—mosquito season is upon us. With the arrival of summer rains, it's important to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your home from these pesky insects. One effective measure is to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds by removing standing water in and around your property. Mosquitoes have a relatively short life cycle of around seven days, and they can breed even in small amounts of water found in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains, and in certain plants such as bromeliads.
Make it a habit to regularly empty any water-holding objects. If there are larger items that cannot be emptied, consider applying larvicide to prevent mosquito larvae from developing. It's worth noting that certain mosquito species, including those that carry diseases like Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, can breed both indoors and outdoors and bite at any time of the day or night.
On evenings when mosquitoes are particularly active, protect yourself by wearing shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves when outdoors. Additionally,
apply an insect repellent containing DEET or other approved ingredients to your skin and clothing.
Draining standing water remains the most effective method for preventing mosquito reproduction. Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, advises practicing the "drain and cover" approach. By eliminating standing water, you eliminate the breeding grounds for mosquito larvae, effectively stopping their multiplication and reducing the likelihood of being bitten.
It's important to note that mosquito eggs laid in shallow water can hatch within a day or two. The larvae develop rapidly, transforming into pupae that quickly mature into fully grown mosquitoes. The entire life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes about eight to ten days, with pupae emerging as flying mosquitoes within two to three days.
Broward County Mosquito Control will consider spraying your neighborhood if you have a large number of mosquitoes. Call 954-765-4062 or scan the QR code to submit a request.
Fort Lauderdale Beach is about to dazzle with a streetscape makeover! Brace yourself for a stunning transformation as the beach walkways undergo a remarkable upgrade, ensuring both beauty and convenience for visitors. This incredible eight-month project kicked off in April and promises to redefine the beach experience.
Teaming up with Weekley Asphalt Paving, Inc., the City of Fort Lauderdale is spearheading streetscape improvements along the picturesque A1A, stretching from the Fort Lauderdale Beach Parking Lot entrance near SE 5 Street all the way to Sunrise Boulevard. Brace yourself for a revitalized atmosphere that prioritizes pedestrian safety and adds a touch of artistic flair to the cityscape.
The project includes a host of exciting elements that will leave you breathless. Picture this: existing palms gracefully relocated to the curbs, opening up extended sidewalk areas on both sides of A1A. The hardscape will receive a vibrant upgrade, boasting colored, decorative concrete that will infuse the surroundings with an irresistible charm. But that's not all! Imagine finding accent seating and bollards thoughtfully placed along the way, providing both comfort and style for beachgoers to enjoy.
Safety takes center stage as well. To illuminate the path for pedestrians, cutting-edge LED lights will be installed along the west side of A1A. During the majestic turtle nesting season, these lights will emit a warm amber glow, gently guiding the way. Once the nesting season comes to a close, prepare to
be bathed in brilliant white light, transforming the beachscape into a mesmerizing spectacle.
Construction began on April 24, 2023, and the anticipated completion date is set for December of the same year.
Get ready, Fort Lauderdale, for a beach experience like never before! Petty Officer 2nd Class Courtnay Outlaw, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. Outlaw, a 2008 Plantation High School graduate, joined the Navy 15 years ago.
“My mom really wanted me to join the military,” said Outlaw. “She wanted to join the military as a younger woman but couldn’t since she wasn’t a citizen.”
Skills and values similar to those found in Fort Lauderdale are important to succeed in the military.
“I saw many of my friends and other people just doing the same thing day after day,” said Outlaw. “I wanted to get away, see the world and broaden my horizons.”
With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the Internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.
"Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level," said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy.”
As Outlaw and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
“I liken the Navy to seeing a cop on the side of the road,” said Outlaw. “You wouldn't just speed past the cop. If you knew the U.S. had a Navy that could keep you in check, you’re less likely to do bad things. We’re really there to provide deterrence.”
As Outlaw and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
“It’s a sense of pride to be able to serve,” said Outlaw. “It’s nice to go anywhere and be thanked for your service. Some days can be mundate but overall it gives you a sense of pride.”
Outlaw is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I’m especially thankful for two of my Navy mentors, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael Sanders and Senior Chief Master-at-Arms Howard Dixon,” added Outlaw. “I can contact them at any time, and they’ll always be ready to go above and beyond for me. I wouldn’t have stayed in for this long without them.”
hen it comes to selling your home in South Florida, strategic renovations can significantly enhance its value and attract potential buyers. With the region's unique architectural styles, climate considerations, and buyer preferences, knowing which renovations to prioritize is crucial. Let's explore a few home renovations that can help maximize your selling price in South Florida.
Kitchen Remodeling:
The kitchen is often considered the heart of a home, and a well-designed and updated kitchen can make a significant impact on potential buyers. In South Florida, where outdoor living and entertaining are popular, consider an open-concept design that seamlessly integrates the kitchen with the dining and living areas. Updating countertops, cabinets, and appliances with sleek and modern options can enhance both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space, making it more attractive to buyers.
WOutdoor Living Spaces:
South Florida's pleasant climate makes outdoor living spaces highly desirable for homeowners. Invest in creating inviting outdoor areas such as a patio, deck, or screened-in porch that seamlessly blend with the indoor living spaces. Consider adding features like an outdoor kitchen, a pool, or a landscaped garden to enhance the appeal. These additions not only create a relaxing oasis but also add value to your home and increase its overall marketability.
Energy-Efficient Upgrades:
With South Florida's hot and humid climate, energy efficiency is a key consideration for homeowners. Upgrading your home with these features can be an attractive selling point. Install energy-efficient windows and doors to improve insulation and reduce cooling costs. Consider replacing old appliances with energy-star-rated models, which not only save energy but also appeal to environmentally conscious buyers. Adding solar panels to the roof can also significantly increase your home's value, as it demonstrates a commitment to
sustainability and offers potential savings on electricity bills.
Bathroom Updates:
Bathrooms are another crucial area of focus for home renovations that can maximize your selling price. Consider updating fixtures, faucets, and lighting to give the space a fresh and modern feel. Opt for neutral colors and timeless designs that appeal to a wide range of buyers. Upgrading the bathroom's functionality, such as adding dual sinks, a spa-like shower, or a luxurious bathtub, can also increase its appeal and overall value.
When it comes to selling your home in South Florida, strategic renovations can be a game-changer. Best strategy: Keep the focus on the kitchen, outdoor living spaces, energy-efficient upgrades, and bathroom updates that can make your home more appealing to potential buyers. Remember to choose renovations that align with the region's climate, architectural style, and buyer preferences to maximize your selling price and attract a broader pool of interested buyers.
One of the defining characteristics of South Florida neighborhoods is the sea of terracotta roofs that cover so many homes. The Spanish-style roofs are a popular choice for builders and homeowners alike because of their beauty, long life, and relatively low maintenance requirements. They are also, unfortunately, a source of anxiety. This anxiety is driven by the state of Florida’s home insurance market.
The expected useful life of a tile roof is about 30 years. After that period of time, the effects of the hot sun and years of storms tend to degrade the grout holding the tiles together, causing cracked tiles and leaks. Replacing a roof can cost as much as 10% of the value of a home.
South Florida is particularly susceptible to hurricane damage. It is also an area that has had particularly high roof-related insurance claims over the past decade. Many people within the insurance industry blame many of these claims on fraud or unnecessary replacements.
Since early 2022, many insurance companies and the re-insurance companies
who back their policies have announced they are either scaling back their business or discontinuing coverage in Florida entirely. An increasing number of Florida insurers have also fallen into insolvency.
The result has been a sharp escalation in insurance policy rates for many Florida homeowners and uncertainty over the future solvency of more of the state’s providers. There is also a new focus on the age and condition of a roof, with most insurance companies requiring at least five years of roof life.
“Anything over 20 years tile is becoming an issue,” said M&L Insurance owner David Vaandering, “with some carriers, as long as they can prove the roof has five years life expectancy, you should be ok, but again it depends on the insurer.”
Homeowners planning on selling in the next few years should think carefully about if and when to replace a roof.
“A new roof definitely adds value to a home,” said Keyes Real Estate Agent Mariem Garcia, “Buyers are more inclined to make an offer on a newer roof.”
She added that if an existing roof still has life, home sellers may be better off investing their money elsewhere, “As long as it (the roof) has at least four to five years left of life, and if it’s insurable, then you’re good. If the roof has reached its life limit, then you may have to replace it unless you find a cash buyer who doesn’t mind the old roof.”
Deciding to replace a roof proactively is a decision every homeowner must consider at some point. Perhaps the most important, sometimes overlooked criterion to consider is your roof’s condition. Roofs that are structurally sound, not leaking, and fully intact are likely good to go, regardless of age. Most reputable roofing companies offer roof inspections to evaluate your roof. If your home has a roof that is more than 20 years old, it is advisable to contact your insurance agent to ensure you don’t have any upcoming issues.
In short, if your roof has five years of life expectancy and is insurable, there are likely other places to invest your money than buying a new roof.
In the digital age, home security has taken a technological leap forward. With the emergence of smart home devices, safeguarding your home has become more efficient, convenient, and interconnected than ever before.
devices allow you to monitor and control your security system remotely through smartphone apps or voice commands.

One of the key advantages of digital home security is the ability to access real-time video feeds from smart cameras. Whether you're at work or on vacation, you can keep an eye on your home through live video streaming. Some cameras even offer advanced features like facial recognition and twoway audio, enabling you to communicate with family members, visitors, or even deter potential intruders.

Smart thermostats allow you to adjust your home's temperature remotely, maximizing energy efficiency and saving on utility bills.
Smart door and window sensors provide an added layer of security. These sensors can detect unauthorized entry and send instant notifications to your smartphone, alerting you of any potential breaches. Integrated with smart locks, you can remotely lock or unlock doors, grant access to visitors, or even create temporary digital keys for service providers.

While the convenience and features of smart home security systems are enticing, it's crucial to prioritize privacy and data security. We are particularly impressed by the Ring Product Line from Amazon. They offer a broad variety of camera-based door bells, smoke detection and security systems.

In today's world, where environmental concerns are paramount, making ecofriendly choices is crucial. One area where we can make a significant impact is in our homes. By incorporating sustainable home improvements, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create a healthier living space for ourselves and future generations. In this article, we will explore some inspiring ideas for transforming your home into an eco-friendly haven.
One of the easiest ways to reduce energy consumption is by upgrading to energy-efficient appliances. Look for products with an ENERGY STAR label, which indicates that they meet strict energy efficiency standards. Efficient refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers can save both electricity and water, reducing utility bills and environmental impact.
Harnessing the sun's power is an excellent long-term investment for sustainable living. Solar panels can generate clean, renewable energy for your home, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Depending on your location, you may even be eligible for government incentives or tax credits to help offset installation costs. With technological advancements, solar panels have become
more affordable and efficient, making them an attractive option for homeowners.
Enhancing your home's insulation is not only a cost-effective measure but also an eco-friendly one. Proper insulation reduces heat transfer, keeping your home cooler. Consider using natural and sustainable materials like cellulose insulation, made from recycled paper, or sheep's wool insulation, which is both renewable and biodegradable. These alternatives provide excellent thermal performance while minimizing environmental impact.
Conserving water is essential for sustainable living. Upgrading to water-saving fixtures such as low-flow toilets, aerated faucets, and showerheads can significantly reduce water usage without sacrificing comfort or functionality. These fixtures use innovative designs to maintain water pressure while consuming less water, making them an eco-friendly choice for every home.
Extend your eco-conscious efforts beyond the four walls of your home by embracing sustainable landscaping practices. Plant native species that require less water and maintenance, reducing the need for
chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Implement rainwater harvesting techniques to collect and utilize rainwater for irrigation purposes. Additionally, consider creating a composting system to recycle kitchen scraps and yard waste, enriching the soil naturally.
Integrating smart home technology can enhance both convenience and sustainability. Install programmable thermostats that adjust temperature settings based on occupancy, reducing energy waste. Smart lighting systems can automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, further conserving electricity. These innovations allow homeowners to monitor and control their energy usage, optimizing efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Incorporating eco-friendly home improvements not only benefits the environment but also enhances your quality of life. By implementing energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, green insulation, water-saving fixtures, sustainable landscaping, and smart home technology, you can create a truly eco-friendly haven. These sustainable choices will not only reduce your carbon footprint but also save money on utility bills in the long run. Let's take responsibility for our homes and contribute to building a greener future for generations to come.
Updating your home is one of the best ways to improve your quality of life. With so many choices, it is helpful to learn what the latest trends are before pursuing a home improvement project. We sat down with Valentina Valderrama, Architect and designer at Weston Floors and Remodeling to learn more.
What is important when making home decor design decisions?
Home decor doesn’t undergo change as fast as other things because it’s very expensive to switch home design from season to season. Therefore, the pieces that make up the harmony in interior design need to be timeless and well-preserved. So, the key is always to find interior solutions to renovating and elevating spaces that will last years and still be relevant.
Great point! What is popular right now?
Earth tones have been dictating color schemes, textures, and lighting in the past years and are still popular today. Earth-tone materials possess calming effects that are associated with nature, which are often preferred for aesthetic purposes in homes, pushing away anything that involves the color gray, shiny fixtures, and overly graphic printing of materials.
Brutalist style is something that is still very popular this year and will be in the year to come; the use of concrete-like materials and the choice of raw textures, materials, and colors are present in all aspects of design. This style won’t disappear soon since it incorporates natural elements such as wood, stone, and plants that go into a more calm
aesthetic than other styles. It sounds like people love tex ture in their home decor.
Yes! Textured materials are another big trend this year. From varied flooring materials like porcelain, ceramic, wood, and floating floors to textured cabinetry and accent fixtures, the texturizing of home elements brings depth and dimension to any space. Gold and bronze accents have been replaced. Homeowners are now opting for more matte silver and black fixtures that contrast better against earthy tones and texturization of materials.

ood putting requires complete conviction. Here’s a simple drill to inspire confidence for holing more putts. It’s also a good lesson for beginners to get a feel for the ball going in the hole. Start by holing a one-foot putt. Then increase the distance by one foot until you miss: go to two feet, three feet and so on.
See how far back you can go until you miss. When you do miss, start over at the one-foot distance. Try it on breaking putts as well as uphill and downhill putts. If you get out to eight feet without missing, pat yourself on the back.
If you’re struggling to get past two or three feet, try to clear your mind of too many thoughts, and just concentrate on making a firm, decisive stroke—accelerating the putter head through the ball. The more shots you make, the more confident you’ll be when you leave the practice green. Make
Short putts are all too easy to miss, at any level of the game. But two simple things can help you make more of them.
First, try to hit the middle of the ball in the middle of the putter face. To make center contact, align the side-stamp of the ball with the aim
Gmark on your putter. Almost all putters today are designed with the sweet spot behind that alignment aid.
Next, when you stroke the putt, keep your head down for a count of at least one second after the ball is gone. You might want to think to yourself one-thousand one before looking up, especially on a must-make putt.
You would be surprised how often these two fundamentals are neglected. But sticking to them will make you a better putter.
Have you ever had the feeling you’re going to make a long putt—and then made it? Sometimes you’re unsure of how a putt will break, but you still have to pick a line and stroke the ball on that line with assurance. Check a putt from behind the hole, from the side, and finally from behind the ball. I try to get as low as I can and keep my eyes level.
The No. 1 reason for missing putts is poor alignment of the putter face. I would always want to visualize not only seeing the line but build confidence in my mind of seeing the ball rolling into the hole. That’s why visualizing the ball tracking on your line will improve your chances of making a putt.
I highly recommend spending more time on the practice green prior to going out on the course to build your confidence and not have to warm up on the golf course after putting on the first few holes and thus scoring higher than you should have if you practiced prior to teeing off.
