Celebrate Local Culture
Ponce de Leon, the famed explorer, laid claim to Florida for Spain when he discovered it in 1513. Even after five centuries, Florida continues to be a home for settlers from Spanish-speaking nations. Broward County’s population is nearly 30% Hispanic, and in Miami Dade, the figure rises to almost 70%. This significant Hispanic presence lends a special resonance to National Hispanic Heritage Month in South Florida.
Observed from September 15th to October 15th, is a festive occasion that honors the history, culture, and contributions of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The month is filled with various events and celebrations, such as the Festival de la Salsa 3 at Miramar Regional Park on September 9th, and the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival at the Pembroke Pines Branch Library on October 6th. These events will feature food, music, crafts, and storytelling, reflecting the rich cultural heritage.
For those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture, Our City magazine’s calendar section is an invaluable resource. Each month, the magazine includes a handpicked list of diverse community activities and events that cater to a broad spectrum of tastes and interests. By engaging with these events, you can truly experience the unique cultural offerings of the region.

ArtServe's Tribute to Veterans: An Exhibit Rooted in History and Heroism
the Tuskeegee Airman Major Leo Gray and shared various artifacts illustrating the heroic contributions of Gray’s fellow African American military bomber pilots and airmen who fought in World War II.
With an Honor Guard welcome by the Fort Lauderdale Navy League Sea Cadets who in turn were saluted by a standing-roomonly crowd in attendance, ArtServe opened its new art show on July 21, 2023 titled “Veterans’ Exhibit—a Family Perspective,” featuring over 50 artworks by distinguished local artists like George Gadson and Marilyn Johansen.
The evening coincided with the 93rd Anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Department of Veterans Administration, an act that forever changed how Americans cared for our veterans after their active service was completed. The ArtServe exhibit’s theme of caring for veterans also underscored imperatives in the June 9, 2023 presidential executive order on “Advancing Economic Security for Military and Veteran Spouses, Military Caregivers, and Survivors.”
The “Veterans’ Exhibit” opening night reception began with a panel discussion on veterans’ challenges as they transition back into civilian life. Speakers included VIP military veterans Brig. Gen. Richard Dix; Mission United co-founder Stephen Moss, a Vietnam veteran; Broward County Veterans Services Director Owen Walker; and foreign affairs advisor Duilia Turner, a former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel who served as Chief of Women, Peace, and Security at U.S. Southern Command. Moderated by Mission United director James Heaton, each panelist discussed his or her own transition from military life.
Along with the panel, the evening featured several presentations, including: Retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel Thaddeus Hamilton, who talked about
Artist George Gadson, who focuses his work on restoring the forgotten history found in many communities and capturing their civic memories through creative design works for public spaces, presented his sculpture of a Buffalo Soldier, which is on loan to ArtServe throughout the Veterans’ exhibit.
“Buffalo Soldiers” were formerly enslaved African-American United States Army regiments formed during the 19th century to serve on the American frontier. Because they often wore buffalo skins to stay warm, they became known as “Buffalo Soldiers.”
Artist Marilyn Johansen presented her portrait of Ed Morse—a decorated lieutenant and aviator in World War II who founded the now-national Ed Morse Automotive Group in 1946—to his grandson, Teddy, who was in attendance.
“Veterans’ Exhibition: A Family Perspective” is now open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays until Monday, September 11. Admission is always free. ArtServe is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.
ArtServe inspires, supports and advances its diverse members, artists and the community by promoting artistic development, education and prosperity through the exploration and presentation of the visual and performing arts.
Fort Lauderdale-based ArtServe is an award-winning arts incubator that is advancing the arts for social good as a creative laboratory and hub for experimental artists committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. Now in its 35th year, ArtServe has won several awards for innovation in the arts and is supported in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and Florida’s Department of State and the Division of Cultural Affairs.

■ COMMUNITY NEWS
Celebrating one year of Our City Fort Lauderdale’s success, all thanks to you, our devoted readers and advertisers. Thank you! ANNIVERSARY 1
Watering the lawn or doing a load of laundry is about to get more expensive. The Fort Lauderdale City Commission recently approved a series of incremental rate increases for water and wastewater services. The city claims the increases are needed to support the construction of a state-of-the-art water treatment facility.
In February, the City Commission approved the construction of the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center. This facility will replace the aging Fiveash water treatment facility, significantly enhancing the water service provided by the City of Fort Lauderdale to our residents. The cutting-edge facility is being built to ensure residents receive the highest quality water, meeting rigorous standards for cleanliness and clarity. The commission believes that investing in this state-of-the-art infrastructure will provide long-term benefits to the entire community.
Over the next few years Fort Lauderdale residents will experience additional increases in water and wastewater prices. In FY24,
the combined water and wastewater rates will rise by 14%, followed by an additional 14.4% increase in FY25. The subsequent years will see smaller increases, with a 9% increase in FY 26 and 6.7% increase in FY 27. After the series of increases, rates will be about 50% higher than current rates.
Public Hearings on these increases will be held on September 5 and 13, 2023.
These rate increases will help fund clean, clear water and introduce modern technology to help monitor and manage water usage effectively. Residents will get access to advanced automated water meter technology. This will allow residents to monitor water usage in real-time, potentially enabling better control and conservation.
One of the most valuable features of automated water meter technology is its ability to detect leaks promptly. In the event of a leak, homeowners can receive immediate notifications, allowing them to take action and mitigate potential damage and expense.
The city hopes these technological advancements will empower residents to make smarter decisions about water usage while promoting a more sustainable future for the community.

Fort Lauderdale Native Serves aboard Naval Station Mayport
By Rick Burke, Navy Office of Community Outreach
Petty Officer 2nd Class Alexander Edwards, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serves aboard Naval Station (NAVSTA) Mayport in Mayport, Florida.
Edwards joined the Navy six years ago.
“I joined the Navy to continue a family tradition,” said Edwards. “My father, Gordon Edwards, and my uncle, George Edwards, both previously served as Marine sergeants in the infantry and in the Gulf War.”
Today, Edwards relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Fort Lauderdale to succeed in the military.
“My parents instilled in me a good work ethic that has definitely helped me out in the military and helped me grow in my career,” said Edwards.
NAVSTA Mayport is one of three major Navy installations in the Jacksonville area. Mayport is home to a busy seaport as well as an air facility, and has an 8,000 ft. runway capable of handling any aircraft in DoD inventory.
The mission of NAVSTA Mayport is to sustain and enhance warfighter readiness. The Navy at Mayport covers 3,409 acres and is the third largest naval facility in the continental United States. NAVSTA Mayport is home to more than 70 tenant commands and is home to the U.S. Navy's Fourth Fleet and the Navy’s first Triton squadron, according to Navy officials.
NAVSTA Mayport was recently selected as the 2023 recipient of the Commander in
Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence. Put simply, Mayport was selected as the best out of all U.S. Navy installations Fleet-wide.
With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the Internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.
“Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on war-fighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level,” said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy."
Serving in the Navy means Edwards is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on strengthening alliances, modernizing capabilities, increasing capacities and maintaining military readiness in support of the National Defense Strategy.
“The Navy supports national defense by maintaining sea lanes across the world is vital to both our commerce and democracy,” said Edwards.
Edwards and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service.
“My proudest moment came in August to September 2021 when I was tasked with assisting the Afghanistan refugees and providing them with provisions, shelter and clothes,” said Edwards. "Just seeing the aid that we can provide to people is a reflection of what our country can do and how we can help those in need.”
As Edwards and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
“Serving in the Navy gives me a sense of pride and is an opportunity to grow, and excel in my career,” said Edwards.
Edwards is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I would like to thank both my parents for supporting my decision to join the Navy,” added Edwards. “I would also like to thank my mentors, Culinary Specialist 1st Class Zachary Wallace, currently serving aboard USS Devastator in Bahrain, and Senior Chief Culinary Specialist Samuel Miro, who is currently serving in Souda Bay, Greece.”

This is all in the face of increased attempts to die by suicide, incidents of self-harm, and increased levels of depression and anxiety. The impact of a death by suicide affects more than the individual who tragically dies including the family, friends, and even the first responders who respond to these calls.
When a person is experiencing challenges to their mental health, it is important they have the help, resources, and support necessary to guide them through. Please take a moment to reflect and know the warning signs of suicide. These signs include feelings of despair, hopelessness, loss of interest in things that used to give them joy, excessive drug/alcohol use, becomes withdrawn or isolates themselves, or recently experienced or sustained traumatic life events. The best way to find out if someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts is to ask them directly.
Mental health challenges can affect a person’s moods, behaviors, and even their cognitive functioning. The norm in some cultures may be to avoid talking about problems, feelings, or mental health concerns. While some individuals can have healthy coping mechanisms, many people often struggle to find proactive methods for their emotional turmoil or unresolved trauma. For any stressful situation, talk about the feelings you have, provide an open dialogue, and promote the fact that it is OK to talk about feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.
Help is here! United Way of Broward County partnered with the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, and the Department of Children and Families to prioritize mental health struggles in its county-wide “It’s OK to not be OK” initiative and the 9-8-8 hotline. The goal
is to provide an outlet of support to the community facing challenges with mental health, or any feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.
Call the 9-8-8 hotline for support! Trained counselors provide each caller with guidance and free resources that will help in most situations.

SHOEBOXES OF HOPE:
South Florida’s Back-to-School Mission for the World
As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of backto-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Residents in Weston are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries.
For many children, access to these simple items is essential to an education. This was the case for Justin Thomas, a shoebox recipient in Southeast Asia whose parents could not afford the supplies needed for school. Thomas remembers the specific day he received a gift-filled shoebox from Operation Christmas Child and found it filled with toys and most exciting to him—school supplies!
Growing up with hand-me-down clothes and used items, Thomas used to write with a pencil so short that he held it using a pen cap. Having an entire packet of new pencils and a pencil sharpener all his own was a treasure to him. This simple gift made a life-changing impact for Thomas because it opened the doors for him to receive an education.
For more information, visit samaritanspurse.org/occ. National Collection Week is Nov. 13-20. Participants can donate $10 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to discover its destination. Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping can browse samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement.
Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, seeks to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 209 million giftfilled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories. This year, Operation Christmas Child will celebrate its 30th year of ministry!

Beyond the Diamond: Jeff Conine’s Legacy of Giving in South Florida
hotel-like facility adjacent to the children’s hospital in Hollywood, Fla. where more than 25,000 people have stayed for free while their child was being treated.
Jeff Conine’s accomplishments in major league baseball are significant -- twotime World Series champion, All-Star game MVP, and beloved “Mr. Marlin” to a generation of South Floridians -- but they may ultimately pale in comparison to the impact he is having in the world of philanthropy.
Conine has been an advocate for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for three decades and raised nearly $8 million to support its patients and families during that time. Most of that has underwritten expenses at the Conine Clubhouse, a
In recognition of his work with the nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, Conine, a longtime Weston resident, was recently inducted into the “Community Hall of Fame” by the Jason Taylor Foundation. The honor included a $10,000 donation by Taylor’s foundation to the Conine Clubhouse and the announcement by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino that the DiMaggio foundation would be the beneficiary of its charitable efforts in August.
“It’s an honor for us to get a chance to honor (Jeff),” said Jason Taylor, whose foundation supports the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida children in need. “He’s very deserving, a great candidate for us, and really a great ambassador for South Florida in general.”
Taylor specifically cited the impact Conine has had through the Conine All-Star Golf Classic, an annual celebrity golf event that
will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024. Presented by Custom Rod & Reel, it has included the likes of Dan Marino, Alonzo Mourning, and Lawrence Taylor and will take place January 22 at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. Proceeds from the fundraiser are earmarked each year for use at the Conine Clubhouse. “Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital attracts patients from throughout Florida and families should remain close to children during treatment, as we did when our son was a baby,” said Conine, who co-hosts the golf tournament with his wife, Cindy. “We don’t want parents to have travel or financial burdens during what are already some of the most stressful times imaginable.”

THE DONOWAY CENTER
Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemoimmuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.
If you are being treated for advanced oroligometastatic pancreatic cancer, you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.
With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has long been held to be the only reproducible therapy for a cure. In reality, surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.
Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in using pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients worldwide have traveled to benefit from this
groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Donoway, which is FDA-approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA-approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation much sooner.
Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer. The treatment history has been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, we’re all confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr. Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/ IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging, and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE, they would have lived a little over a year, so this technique opens a new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Dr. Donoway presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr. Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program, call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com.

A SMART Partnership: THE SMART BOND PROGRAM IS BRINGING BUSINESS TO BROWARD COUNTY
Since voters approved the bond referendum in 2014, their tax dollars have been improving the infrastructure of schools and changing the educational landscape across Broward County through investments in Safety, Music & Art, Athletics, Renovation and Technology – known as the SMART Bond Program. The SMART Bond Program is making a difference not just in school buildings and in the lives of students but throughout Broward County and beyond. The program has infused the South Florida economy, as local businesses are helping Broward County Public Schools deliver on its promise of renovating and elevating the educational experience at schools across the district.
From new roofing and HVAC systems, and fire sprinkler upgrades to electrical enhancements, building renovations and classroom additions, the SMART Bond Program has put local businesses – including small and minority-owned – to work.
One of the most critical renovations for many schools that are part of the program
is enhancing the fire sprinkler system. Fire sprinklers play a crucial role in the safety improvements that are part of the bond. Experts like Francis Engineering, a local Fort Lauderdale-based minority-owned business, are contracted to help get the work of the SMART Bond Program completed. Francis Engineering focused on designing and installing fire protection systems for five schools, including North Lauderdale Elementary and Lauderhill 6-12. What’s truly remarkable is that, as the SMART Bond Program provides local businesses with contracting opportunities, they, in turn, contribute to the safety of students.
“We get satisfaction because we’re providing life safety features and fire sprinklers to protect lives and we feel comfortable at night going to bed knowing that we provided sprinklers to the school and knowing the students will be safe,” said Orrett Francis, founder of Francis Engineering.
Like Francis Engineering, other businesses throughout Broward County and South Florida – such as D. Stephenson
Construction, Grace & Naeem, LEGO Construction and Tropic Fencing – help make the SMART Bond Program’s goal of renovating and improving educational spaces possible.
“We won our first project with the SMART Program in 2018. This gave us control of our destiny. We were able to explore a new avenue of work within the education system and empower us to go after large project opportunities,” Francis said.
The SMART Bond Program continues to create jobs for small businesses in the areas of construction, engineering, design and architecture. You can learn more about working with the SMART Bond Program by visiting this link: https://tinyurl.com/ SMARTbusinesses

Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Announces 2023-2024 Initiatives and Rotary Cares Project
By Dawn Hanna
As The Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale begins a new term, President Rick Riccardi is looking ahead to embrace the Rotary International theme to “Create Hope in the World” locally. “’Service Above Self’ and being a ‘Servant Leader’ are principles in life (not just in Rotary) that I, hopefully, will be positively measured by,” said Riccardi before announcing two long-term service projects. The first service project is to collaborate with local organizations that address homelessness and behavioral health. The second project is to introduce Urban Farming or “Agrihood” to bring better health (mental and physical) to local neighborhoods.
The Rotary Cares project, led by Rotarian Jorg Hruschka, continues this year. Each year, approximately two hundred elementary school students in Fort Lauderdale experience homelessness. With school starting again in August, The Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale began working on an exciting special project with the City of Fort Lauderdale Neighbor Leadership Academy - Class 12 and others to provide disadvantaged returning students with much-needed personalized family care packages that will provide school supplies and minimum necessities for a dignified, safe, and healthy life. Shelf-stable food, hygiene products, gently used clothing, books, games, home goods, and comfort items are being collected to establish resource rooms at several Fort Lauderdale elementary schools. This project is an early jump start for the September Rotary Theme of Basic Education and Literacy Month.
Rotary is such a successful organization because its members have one trait in common - the passion to make a difference in the world. Impact starts with members who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Great Putting Drills
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Low handicap players understand the importance of a good short game, especially on the putting green. Professional players have exceptional ball striking skills. In fact, a tour event is basically a putting contest. The best putter each week wins the tournament. With the proper techniques, everyone can develop into a solid putter. The following putting drills are designed to improve your ability to hole the ball on the green.
Clock Drill
Make the short putts. Nothing is more frustrating than hitting a great drive, placing the approach shot on the green and missing a twofoot par putt and walking away with bogey. Practice, practice, and practice from short ranges. The clock drill is excellent reinforcement. Begin by placing three balls in a line at three, six, and nine feet from the hole similar to the twelve, three, six and nine position on a clock. The goal is to make all twelve in a row. If you miss any putt, then go back to the beginning and start over.
Ladder Drill
Improve your putting from long range. Give yourself the opportunity to make short putts inside five feet from the hole. Percentages that you’ll make a putt dramatically decrease the farther away you are from the hole. The ladder drill is designed to improve putting from longer distances. Place a tee in the ground in a line ten feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet away. In this drill, you are attempting to control the distance you hit each putt. The ladder drill begins by hitting a putt to the first tee, which is ten feet away. Next, hit a 20-footer, then 30-footer followed by a 40-foot putt.
The idea is to get the ball to stop as close to each tee as possible. The next step is to theoretically close the ladder. From the first tee, hit a 30-foot putt, followed by 20-foot putt followed by a ten-foot putt to the final tee. At the conclusion, you have successfully opened and closed the ladder. The drill continues by going through the same sequence from the opposite direction. If the first putts were all uphill, you are now faced with a series of difficult downhill putts. Once you can successfully navigate this drill, your feel on the greens should improve.
Path Drill
Many amateurs push or pull the putt off line. This is caused from an in-to-out or out-to-in swing path. The following drill will help develop a consistent path. Find a flat area on the green and place two clubs on the ground wide enough to place the putter head behind the ball. Swing the putter between the two clubs and hit the ball. If the putter hits any of the clubs, you are not swinging the putter down the target line. Make sure the putter head stays low to the ground and follows through.
It’s always great to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional and see what tips they have to share and teach to you as well.
