he Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941 began a chain of events that led to one of the greatest collective acts of selflessness the world has ever seen. Men left well-paying careers to join the army, even with the Great Depression fresh in their memories. Women abandoned traditional roles in the home to work in factories by the millions. The ideals of citizenship and prioritizing the betterment of society above personal goals is, in part, why we refer to those Americans as “the greatest generation” today. People, by the millions, did their duty, regardless of the impacts on themselves. It is time for our generation to do our duty. About 2 million people have died from coronavirus infection globally. The economic impact of the pandemic is measured in trillions of dollars. One only has to go to the grocery store or to pick up a meal at a local restaurant to understand the impacts on a personal level. People have lost jobs, older people are scared and many are or have been sick. But, there is finally good news: if we all do our duty for one another, much of these horrible impacts will soon be in our memories. We must all get vaccinated. The primary benefit of the COVID vaccine is the fact that it reduces a person’s likelihood to give it to someone else. If enough of us are vaccinated, the disease will stop spreading. Even if you are young, healthy, and unlikely to suffer any symptoms at all, you can still be an unknowing, unintentional spreader of a deadly disease to someone who could become very ill. This is our Pearl Harbor moment. It is time for each of us to do our duty in support of a greater cause. Get vaccinated. The life you save may not only be yours. Sincerely,

t was the most wonderful time of year despite the ongoing pandemic surrounding the season known for festivities and good cheer. Although many people have been directly affected by COVID-19, a few philanthropic companies wanted to help. Just Play, Basic Fun!, and Jazwares recognized the fact that donations for annual toy drives would not be as plentiful as in the past, so they stepped up to the plate to do their part to put a smile on the faces of

the many children at the Conine Clubhouse in Hollywood. Former major league ballplayer Jeff Conine, who has been an active fundraiser for the children’s hospital for more than 25 years, helped unload vehicles stuffed with toys that were custom-selected for kids ages 1-13. Lotsy Dotsy, JDCH’s infamous clown was also in attendance to help with the distribution. The variety of toys included some of the most popular selections available this past holiday season and were distributed at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) and throughout Memorial Healthcare System. “Kids still need to be treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, so we’re collecting toys from the community. We’ve got three great toy companies that have come in and donated a ton of stuff to give these kids to brighten their lives while they’re being treated at the children’s hospital. The outpouring has been fantastic, the numbers

of items we’ve received has been amazing, and the quality of product we’ve gotten make these kids feel like they’re being treated like family, and that’s what you get at Joe DiMaggio,” exclaimed Conine. The “Winter Toy Drive-Thru” event was a grand slam as the three South Florida toy companies hit it out of the park just like the clubhouse namesake would. More than 300 toys were given to kids coping with medical challenges during this time which has been severely impacted by Coronavirus. “It’s all about paying it forward and being generous when it really counts. Donating time, resources, and products to these kids that are staying at the hospital is invaluable and we really appreciate all their help,” added Conine.

ust six years ago several organizations came together to create a day dedicated to show gratitude and recognition to police officers in communities across America. Since the inaugural event, “National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day” is celebrated on January 9th. It is a gracious way for citizens to thank and appreciate their local law enforcement for all their daily sacrifices.
“Here in the City of Hollywood we fully support the men and women of law enforcement who put their lives on the line each day in service to our community. One day isn’t enough to show appreciation. Each and every day we wake up in our safe community, we can thank the men and women in blue for their commitment to professional community policing,” said Mayor Josh Levy. Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have professions that endanger their own lives in order to protect everyone else’s. Oftentimes, the public service positions are thankless as these dedicated men and women are taken away from their own families for extended periods of time not knowing what their day will entail. eventy-Five years ago, eleven Hollywood workers were not happy with the service they received from local banks. They decided to do something about it. Each of them contributed $5 to found the first credit union in the city and currently the only financial institution headquartered in Hollywood. Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. the Facebook group, “Coast Guard Buddies” since they understand what it is like to stand a lonely watch during the holiday season. “The loneliness of being away for Christmas was a bit overwhelming. I personally know what it’s like to be a watch stander on duty on Christmas Eve, having done so at several units during the period of my enlistment in the 1970s. It can be a very lonely time and as a group we want to let these men and women on duty know that we’re thinking of them. We know what it’s like to be always ready, even during the holidays,” explained Holmes.

Just last year, Holmes came up with the idea to contact Coast Guard Units including cutters and shore stations nationwide. The response and reaction were so positive that the Cooper City resident wanted it to be larger in 2020. In 2019, he only had a handful of veterans make calls to approximately 40 units, but this year almost three dozen were up for the task as he arranged for them to contact over 100 units. “While a few units were not available (underway), we did get through to most of the units.
Those ‘Coasties’ on the receiving end were incredibly grateful that we had thought of them since we know exactly how it felt to be on duty Christmas Eve because we all had been in their shoes,” added Holmes. Coast Guard Veteran Chip Clough reported, “Both watches were very thankful that we would care to call. What a great idea and count me in for next year,” and his comments were echoed by Randy Schneider who said, “I’ll be planning this for an annual event. What a great idea.”

ith 2021 in full swing, I had the recent opportunity to address the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with the annual Mayor’s State of the City report. With the coronavirus pandemic over this past year, health, and the value of being healthy, has taken center stage. One of the many lessons learned, is that you can’t take health for granted. The maintenance of our physical, mental and social health and our ability to be resilient and grow stronger requires constant commitment and work. The same applies to the health of a City, and I’m happy to report that despite the impacts of this devastating pandemic on the city’s operations, our City of Hollywood continues its path forward as an evermore healthy city. There are endless persons to thank for their help in our response to Covid-19, like the healthcare hero’s at Memorial and other medical centers, our city paramedics, police and our City’s communications and economic development team, to name a few, but just one last mention has to be made, and that’s of the Broward League of Cities, which, under the leadership of our very own City of Hollywood Commissioner Traci Callari as 2020 president, appointed me to lead a county-wide task force that formed a partnership with Boward County’s Board of County Commissioners to ensure that the 31 municipalities in Broward received CARES Act dollars to help facilitate our response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Hollywood’s share of those funds, including government and community assistance funds, was 8.2 million dollars, without which my state of the city report would have probably taken a different tone. Pandemic or not, progress can never stop. 2020 tested us all, and 2021 is here with the promise of a vaccine for Covid. No matter what comes ahead for us, be sure that the 1300 plus members of our city government team will continue to work to ensure we are a “healthy city” - financially, residentially, commercially, recreationally and environmentally. Finally, as to vaccine distribution and availability, please keep close attention to news from the The Florida Department of Health in Broward County (FL DOH), and the other vaccine opportunities that will be announced in the days, weeks and months ahead. As of this writing, the State of Florida has allowed the vaccine to be offered to seniors 65 and older, free of charge, at vaccination sites across Broward County. Vaccines will be available by appointment only for up to 500 new seniors each day, per site. The number of vaccination sites will expand as the local vaccine supply increases. Appointments for Florida DOH vaccination sites can be made by visiting www.browardcovidvaccine. com. Due to overwhelming demand, if you find that no appointment times are available, the Florida DOH is asking that you check back again often. Please continue to wear your masks and keep physical distance as we have for a year now.
