Spring Returns Making Old New Again
As we enter the fourth month of the year, we can feel the energy of new beginnings and fresh starts that come with the arrival of spring.
The start of spring represents a time of renewal, growth, and rejuvenation. The sun shines brighter, the flowers bloom, and the air feels lighter. It is a time to let go of the old and embrace the new, to take a deep breath and start afresh.
As poet and writer, Rainer Maria Rilke once said, "And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been." This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of spring - a time for new experiences, new beginnings, and new possibilities.
As publishers, we believe that spring is the perfect time to start something new. Whether it's a new hobby, a new project, or a new goal, this season offers the perfect opportunity to turn over a new leaf and embark on a new adventure.
The coming of spring reminds us that summer is just around the corner. South Florida offers a plethora of summer activities for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this issue for a curated list of camp options for your kiddos!
We hope that this issue will motivate you to start something new and to embrace the beauty of the season. Let this be the month that you shed the old and welcome the new. After all, as Rilke reminds us, "spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems." Let us embrace the poetry of the season and revel in the joy of new beginnings.
Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Federal Income Tax Filing Deadline
Don’t forget to file your tax return (or request an extension). All United States taxpayers are required to file a return with the Internal Revenue Service that shows their income from last year. Did you know that the Federal income tax was first introduced in 1861 as a way to help pay for the Civil War? The original law was subsequently found to be unconstitutional and revoked. The Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reinstated the national income tax in 1913.

All Welcome to the Hollywood Rotary Foundation FUN-FOOD-CHARITY AUCTION
The Hollywood Rotary Foundation has been raising funds for college scholarships for Hollywood High school seniors and supporting local youth organizations at its annual charity auction since 1956. It is one of the oldest, continuous charity fundraising events in South Florida and is an annual Hollywood favorite.
The event features a plethora of gifts and merchandise to choose from, including gift certificates for hotel stays, vacation rentals, cruises, airline tickets, restaurants, and tickets for performances & sporting events. Merchandise will include art, decorative items, appliances, tools, electronics, jewelry, toys, wine & spirits, and even an e-bike. We sat down with Auction Chair and Past-President of the Hollywood Rotary, Kevin Taie-Tehrani, to learn more.
Tell Us About the Hollywood Rotary Foundation Charity Auction
There is so much! One fun item is the BULL CLUB raffle. It goes back to 1956 and featured raffling a live bull on the clubhouse lawn and a chance to win meat from a locally owned steakhouse. It was replaced in the 1990s with a raffle for a big money jackpot, but the name stuck! Every $10 donation gets you into the raffle and “beefs” up our support to the community.
In addition to lots of fun from celebrity auctioneers, there’s the food. Food from several local restaurants and the best seafood paella I’ve ever had are all on offer. The kickoff starts on Thursday evening with an old fashion backyard BBQ.
That Sounds Amazing! What Programs Do the Proceeds Support?
The auction supports college scholarships that are awarded annually to McArthur, South Broward, Chaminade-Madonna, and Hollywood Hills Seniors. The Rotary Club also supports several youth organizations, including The YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, The Hollywood Police Athletic League (PAL), The Pac-a-Sac program to feed elementary and middle school kids, The Community
Enhancement Collaboration, and many other local charities.
The Charity Auction lasts for three days.
It must be huge! Is it a good event for the kids?
It is a huge auction! There are over one thousand items to be auctioned off. Each day is different than the last. It is a family-friendly FUN event with multiple generations now attending each year, as well as kid’s having fun walking and showing bidders auction items around the room.
Tell us about the Hollywood Rotary Foundation
The Hollywood Rotary Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that promotes “Service Above Self” and goodwill throughout our community. Since its inception, the Rotary Foundation has donated more than three million dollars to youth projects in our community. And the Club has contributed over $5,000,000 in the past 95 years, which includes $50,000 each year in scholarships to the four Hollywood High Schools.
While the pandemic was a setback to the club’s fundraising goals, this year we are hoping to get it back on track with a goal to raise $100,000 with the community’s help and donations.
Sounds incredible! How Can Our Readers Participate?
We hope to see you on April 20, 21, and 22! Join us for fun, food, and charity! Your participation and generosity allow us to continue to support college scholarships and the community’s youth organizations. Monetary donations to become a “Bull Club” member can be made by check to the Hollywood Rotary Foundation or Zelle your donations to info@rotaryhollywood.org. For each $10 increment of your donation, your name will be entered in a drawing for $1,000. Donations of auction items and gift certificates are greatly appreciated! One hundred percent of your tax-deductible donations will go to helping children.
▸ The 66th Annual Hollywood Rotary Foundation FUN-FOOD-CHARITY Kickoff Auction Barbecue starts at 5 PM on Thursday. The Auction Starts at 6 PM ending at 10 PM Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (Saturday will end when all items are sold, sometimes close to 11 PM). The Barbecue and auction will be held at the Hollywood Rotary Clubhouse, 2349 Taylor Street. Members of the public are invited to stop by at any time to participate and support local youth. It showcases the best of military and civilian aircraft, as well as thrilling aerobatic performances and skydiving stunts. If you are a fan of flying machines and adrenaline-pumping action, you won’t want to miss this spectacular show over the Atlantic Ocean.
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show will take place on April 29th and 30th. The show will start around 11:45 am and end around 3:00 pm each day. The center of the show will be located at Sunrise Boulevard and A1A, but you can enjoy the aerial displays from anywhere along the four miles of Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Some of the performers that have been announced so far include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the F-22 Raptor Demo Team, the Red Bull Helicopter, the Red Bull Air Force, Kirby Chambliss, the SOCOM Para-Commandos, the Air Force Heritage Flight, the T-38 Talon and Michael Goulian24. More performers will be added as the show date approaches, so stay tuned for updates.
If you want to have the best viewing experience, you can purchase tickets for one of the VIP or premium viewing areas. These areas offer reserved seat-
ing, shaded tents, catering, beverages, private restrooms, and other amenities. You can also opt for a sandbox, which is a private area on the beach for up to six people with chairs and umbrellas. Parking for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show can be challenging due to limited spaces and high demand. The best option is to use public transportation or ride-sharing services to get to the beach. You can also park at one of the designated parking garages or lots and take a shuttle bus to the show site. Parking passes are available online for
advance purchase.
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show is more than just a show. It is a celebration of aviation history, technology, and skill. It is also a tribute to the men and women who serve in our armed forces and protect our freedom. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness some of the most amazing flying machines in action over one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida.

SHARE THE BEACH! IT'S SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON IN HOLLYWOOD
If you love sea turtles, you’re in luck! Hollywood is one of the best places to witness these amazing creatures as they lay their eggs on the sandy shores. Sea turtle nesting season runs from March 1 to October 31, and you might spot three different types of turtles: leatherbacks, loggerheads, and greens. Leatherbacks are the largest and rarest of sea turtles, weighing up to 2,000 pounds and measuring up to 8 feet long. They are the first to arrive on the beaches, usually in early March1. Loggerheads are the most common sea turtles that nest in Florida, with reddish-brown shells and powerful jaws. They start nesting in April and can lay up to 100 eggs per nest2. Greens are named for their greenish skin color and have a smooth shell with no scales.
They nest from May to June and can lay up to 200 eggs per nest.
Sea turtles are endangered species and need our help to survive. If you find a nesting site, please follow these tips2:
• Do not touch or disturb the turtle or the eggs. Keep your distance and observe quietly.
• Do not use flashlights or flash photography. Bright lights can scare or confuse the turtle and prevent her from nesting or returning to the sea.
• Do not leave trash or debris on the beach. These can harm or entangle the turtle or her hatchlings.
• Turn off or shield any artificial lights near the beach at night. Lights can disorient hatchlings and make them crawl away from the sea instead of towards it.
• Report any injured or dead turtles to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-FWCC.
You can also support sea turtle conservation by volunteering with local organizations, such as Sea Turtle Oversight Protection (STOP) or Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program.
Sea turtles are amazing animals that have been around for millions of years. Let’s help them thrive for many more by respecting their nesting season and protecting their habitat.
▸ To learn more about Sea Turtles or volunteer to help the magnificent animals we share the beach with visit The Sea Turtle Conservation Program website at www.seaturtleop.com.

Let's Show Green Iguana's Who is Boss! City of Hollywood Offers Removal Services of Invasive Species
Have you heard of the sneaky Green Iguana? This reptile is not only an invasive species, but it's also causing damage and spreading disease throughout our community. Their droppings are everywhere - on docks, boats, porches, decks, and even in swimming pools! Plus, they can transmit the infectious bacterium Salmonella to humans.
Green iguanas are not native to South Florida. They were likely introduced to the area through the pet trade, as they were popular pets in the past. Over time, some iguanas were either intentionally or unintentionally released into the wild by their owners or escaped from captivity.
These released iguanas were able to establish breeding populations, and their numbers grew rapidly due to the warm and humid climate in South Florida, which is similar to their native range in Central and South America. With no natural predators and an abundance of food sources, the population of green iguanas in South Florida
exploded. Today, they are considered an invasive species and pose a serious threat to the local ecosystem.
But don't worry, there are some easy ways to deal with these pesky creatures. Property owners can get creative by modifying the Iguana habitat, removing their favorite plants, and filling in holes to make their property less inviting. You can even spray them with water to encourage relocation (it's like a fun game of tag!).
Adventurous homeowners can capture and remove the animals themselves (just make sure to follow the anti-cruelty laws). If you're not up for the task, no problem - the City of Hollywood has hired a team of professional trappers who wear bright orange shirts with "Wildlife Trapper" written on them. They use pellet air rifles for humane removal and are
licensed by the Department of Agriculture and Florida Fish and Wildlife. They're like the superheroes of iguana removal!
So let's all work together to keep our community clean and safe. If you have any questions or concerns about iguana control, call the City of Hollywood Department of Public Works at 954-967-4526. Let's show those iguanas who's boss!

Army Corps of Engineers Begins Work on Dania Beach
The US Army Corps of Engineers has begun on-site preparation/ setup activities and coordination for the Shore Preservation Project that will add substantial amounts of new, fresh beach sand to Dania Beach. The project will widen the popular stretch of the beachfront and also protect the sand dune, parking lot, and facilities to the dune’s west from ocean surges during periods of storm-strength winds. Sand augmentation work is scheduled to begin on March 13th and will continue until roughly the end of April.
The work began on the southern end of the beach and will gradually move northwards toward the pier. As the work progresses and the sand nourishing operation expands north, more sections of the beach will be closed, limiting its access during weekdays. There will typically be no work on the project on weekends, and the beachfront will be accessible on those two days.
This significant improvement to Dania Beach’s oceanfront is expected to benefit the many residents and visitors who enjoy not only the surf and sand but also Dania Beach’s expanding amenities, including restaurants and the pier.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers is a federal agency responsible for a wide range of engineering and construction projects. It is part of the
Department of Defense but has both military and civilian personnel.
The Corps is responsible for a variety of civil works projects, including flood control, navigation, and environmental restoration. The work on Dania Beach is part of a larger “Broward County Shore Protection Project” that seeks to replenish and preserve the beach along Broward County’s Coastline.

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Set to Raise Money to Fight Cancer
The local installment of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life will take place at Tropical Park on April 22, 2023. It is open to everyone in the community. Relay For Life is a movement that unites survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants in the belief that the future can be cancer-free. With 2.5 million participants worldwide, it is the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.
At Relay For Life events, individuals facing cancer are not alone. Each year, over 2,500 Relay events take place nationwide to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. These events offer special activities throughout the year, allowing survivors and caregivers to connect with others and access a strong support system. No donation is too small. Each and every dollar counts. Donations help fund
groundbreaking cancer research, patient care programs, and can make a difference in communities like ours. With every donation, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives.
The "Miami" relay's fundraising goal for this year is $250,000. These funds are utilized to support cancer research, fund education programs, and provide services to cancer patients and their families.
The American Cancer Society's mission is more important than ever, as the needs of people facing cancer continue despite the ongoing crisis. Funds raised through Relay For Life help to sustain the Society's efforts in cancer research, providing a 24/7 helpline, and ensuring patients receive the care and support they need.

HOLLYWOOD UPDATE
By Mayor Josh Levy
Greetings, to all the readers of Our Cit y Hollywood.
This month I’d like to highlight the record number of capital improvement projects that we have coming up this year, though before I do, please join me in extending our best wishes to City Manager Dr. Wazir Ishmael, on his announced retirement. Dr. Ishmael led our city’s administration for the past 8 years, through tough financial times for the organization at the start, through the pandemic, and through the ongoing renaissance in the city’s public and private reinvestment in itself. Always a steady hand, Dr. Ishmael developed a culture of public service that centered upon the professionalism and integrity that he modeled. Carrying it forward will be Mr. George Keller, who was appointed by the City Commission as our new City Manager. George brings 30 years of experience in public administration and has been our Deputy City Manager under Dr. Ishmael for the past few years. We are excited to have George take the helm. He wants to see our city government “do more, better, faster” in all that we do to serve our residents, businesses and investors, and we all look forward to him leading the charge with our city team toward that end. A big focus area for 2023 is improving our public facilities and infrastructure, and our City Commission has prioritized and authorized the City Manager to undertake quite a list of projects. This year from our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts team, new playgrounds are coming to the ArtsPark, the Lakes of Emerald Hills Park, Kooser Park, Stan Goldman Park, McNicol Community Center, and Driftwood Park. A new concrete skateboard park, pathways, lighting, pickleball courts and dog park are coming to Stan Goldman Park. Pickleball courts are also coming to Jefferson Park. Artificial turf soccer fields will be installed at Dowdy
Field. New exercise equipment will be installed at Oakridge Park. Pathway renovations will take place at Joe DiMaggio Park, Zinkil Park, John Williams Park and Mara Giulianti Park. New floating boat ramp docks will be installed at Holland Park. Bottle-filler fountains will be installed at many of our parks and community centers. We’ll be pursuing indoor pickleball for seniors and more teen programming. Plus, we’ll be partnering with Memorial Healthcare System to provide aquatic exercise classes and games for seniors; and more.
From our Engineering team this year, we’ll have select street and alley resurfacing completed in each of our commission districts. We’ll be constructing new sidewalks and ADA improvements, creating safer routes to neighborhood schools and we’ll be completing designs for our neighborhood bicycle greenways, and designing phase 2 of our neighborhood traffic calming program. From our Public Works team, you’ll see hundreds of additional trees planted along the roadways of our city. Downtown and on the beach, our CRA team will be beginning to oversee a transformative streetscape construction project that will beautify the historic segment of Downtown Hollywood Boulevard with new and wider sidewalks, cafe space, trees and lighting, and the beach will see large resiliency and storm hardening projects continue and get underway. I am very excited about all these public infrastructure and facilities projects and I hope you are too. Big thanks to our teams. This has all been years in the making. Let’s get ready for some public improvements in Hollywood!
Sincerely,
Josh Levy Mayor of Hollywood

Pet of the Month
“Truffles”
Truffles came to me when her owner passed away, fourteen years ago in New York. Truffles prefers life in Florida where this African Leopard tortoise can enjoy her days outside. She loves arugula strawberry salads and ripe juicy tomatoes. Her igloo home (really a cat condo, but we don’t tell her that!) provides a comfy shelter from rain and sun. Truffles looks forward to the next 100 years

Two Invaluable Putting Tips
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Putting using a name or line on your ball can really help in setting you on the correct path line. The key is to use your dominant eye so you will not struggle in correctly lining up your ball.
First, to determine your dominant eye, hold both hands out in front of you clasped together and create a small hole to look at the flag. Close one eye at a time to determine which eye is still able to see the flag. The eye that you see the flag with is your dominant eye and you will want to use that eye in lining up your ball.
If you are left eye dominant you will want to aim your ball line with your left hand. If right eye dominant, use your right hand to aim your ball line at the target. Use the same hand to increase the odds of getting the ball directly in line between your dominant eye and the target. You should now find it much easier to aim the ball directly at the target.
Once your ball is all lined up, go set up to the ball and make sure the clubface alignment matches the balls. Now you are ready to stoke it at your target. Trust your aim, begin focusing on your speed and you will become a better putter. If you are having difficulty matching your putter to the line (so it feels like you are aiming at your target), you may want to change your set-up until they match.
Check to see if your eye is directly over the ball. Think about why this is so important. When you line up to putt you want to see the direct line from the ball to the intended target. In this case, it’s the hole that you are putting the ball into. Set up to putt with your normal putting stance over the ball and place a ball under your eye. Now you want to release that ball to see if it lands directly on top of the ball that you are using to putt into the hole. If the ball lands before it, you are standing too far away. If the ball lands past the ball to the right, you are standing too close. Keep trying this test to make sure your eye is directly over it with the ball always landing directly on top of it. You will be surprised how you need to make the proper adjustment to get the eye directly over the ball and see the right line that you are stroking the putter head on the same path your eyes see it.
As always, see your local teaching Professional for a putting lesson. No one knows the game better than them.

■ TEE TO GREEN
Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival is a Hit for the Whole Family
Hollywood celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day on March 12 with a parade and festival. The mile-long parade was headlined by the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales pulling their famous wagon. After the parade, downtown Hollywood was awash in green, with kids’ activities, live music, shopping, and more than a little bit of beer.
