It’s Hurricane Season
T
he 2020 Hurricane season was one of the busiest on record. There were more named storms in the Atlantic than in any other year in recorded history. Thankfully, South Florida never had a direct impact! We had plenty to worry about with the pandemic. The latest forecasts expect 2021 to also be an above-average year for hurricanes. We all need to be prepared.
It Only Takes One Storm
According to Florida State’s Tropical Cyclone Track Probability Tool, Broward County has about an 80% chance of having a tropical cyclone pass over us and a 30% chance for a major hurricane. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ⊲ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ⊲ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information, and water. ⊲ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in case you lose power and water supply. ⊲ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer!

Rental Assistance Available for Broward County Renters
B
roward County received a $53 million grant from the U.S. Treasury to assist residents with unpaid rent and utilities. The funds were made available by the recently past CARES Act and are part of the COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). Residents financially impacted by COVID-19 can use apply for funds to help with rental and other assistance. This program will pay 100% of rental and utility assistance for up to 12 months for qualifying households. Payments will be made directly to landlords and utilities plus an additional three months if funds are available and it’s determined the extra months are needed to ensure housing stability. Funds must be used to reduce the household’s past due rent and/or utility bills before future payments can be made. Once past due amounts are reduced, future payments for up to three months at a time
can be considered. The program will not provide funds to residents already receiving federally funded rental assistance provided for the same time period. To be eligible, a household must be renting a unit, apartment or house within Broward County and include at least one individual who: • Qualifies for unemployment or has experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or experienced a financial hardship due to COVID-19 • Demonstrates a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability • Has a household income at or below 80 percent of the area median Applications will be accepted as long as funds are available. City of Hollywood Flushing Waterlines

he City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities’ Annual Free Chlorine Line Flushing Program is underway. The free chlorine portion of this program will end June 14th. If necessary, flushing may continue across the City through June 30th to achieve optimal system maintenance.
This annual flushing helps rid the water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediments. The hydrant flushing may temporarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should clear in a few hours. Residents may also notice a change in the taste of their water during this time as well. The cloudiness is due to sediment in the pipelines and is not harmful or hazardous. You can speed the clearing by opening your faucets and taps and letting them run until your water runs clear. Typically, flushing will take place in the evening hours between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. when the demand for water is low. During the water line flushing period,
the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily change its method of disinfection from chloramines to free chlorination. Residents may notice a change in the taste and odor of the water during this time. The city will discontinue Free Chlorination as of June 14, 2021. Owners and managers of businesses with fish and shellfish holding tanks and users of kidney dialysis machines are advised that regular methods for testing and removing free chlorine will not be effective during the remainder of the flushing period. It will be necessary to test and adjust for chloramines after June 14, 2021.

repare for an above-average Hurricane Season! That is the message scientists working at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project have for residents of South Florida. The research group predicts there will be 17 named storms in the Atlantic Basin this year. It also gives a 45% chance that a major hurricane (category 3-4-5) will hit the east coast of the United States. The Atlantic has averaged about 12 named storms and six hurricanes a year since 1981 when the center began keeping track. As is the case with all hurricane seasons, it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for everyone. We should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted. Last year was the busiest Atlantic hur-

ricane season on record. There were 30 named storms and 13 hurricanes. It was only the second time in history that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ran out of pre-selected names and was forced to use letters from the Greek alphabet to name storms. The forecast includes three different models: an extended-range statistical prediction scheme, using 38 years of past data; an analog prediction model; and a statistical/ dynamical model based on 40 years of data. All three models call for an active Atlantic hurricane season in 2021. Factors contributing to the forecast include La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific. La Niña, which means “little girl” in Spanish, results in colder water off the California coast; the cold water pushes the jet stream northward and leads to warmer

conditions in the tropical Atlantic. La Niña conditions are associated with increased storm activity. The tropical Atlantic currently has near-average sea surface temperatures, while most of the subtropical Atlantic is warmer than normal. Colorado State’s seasonal forecasts were developed by the late Dr. William Gray. He was the lead author on these predictions for over 20 years and continued as a co-author until he died in 2016. In addition to pioneering seasonal Atlantic hurricane prediction, he conducted groundbreaking research in a wide variety of other topics, including hurricane genesis, hurricane structure, and cumulus convection. His investments in both time and energy to these forecasts cannot be acknowledged enough.

he 2021 hurricane season is expected to have more storms than usual. We all know what happens when a hurricane heads toward us: lines at gas stations form, grocery store shelves empty, and room rates at hotels north of us skyrocket. The most important thing someone can do to ensure they are safe in the event of a major storm is to create a hurricane emergency plan.
Should I Stay or Should I Go
The first and perhaps most important thing to plan is whether or not you will stay or leave when a storm hits. If leaving is part of your plan, make sure you know where you are going long before storm season. Pre-arranging a visit with family or friends will make things much less stressful. Plan your evacuation route thoroughly
and what time of day you plan to evacuate. There are only two major highways that run north from Broward County. Driving at night may be a better idea than during the day if many people are evacuating. If you decide to stay, make sure your hurricane kit is ready. Be prepared for temporary power disruptions. Public water sources may become contaminated, so be sure to have plenty of bottled water. You might even want to fill a tub the day of the storm.
Home Preparations
It is critical to prepare your home and property for a storm regardless of whether you stay or leave. Much of this work can be done long before a hurricane is imminent. Clean up and remove debris or any item that could become airborne and damage

property. Make sure hurricane shutters are easily accessible and that you have the correct amount to secure your home properly. Make sure you know who will be putting the shutters up in the event of a storm. Trim trees and bushes and remove ripe coconuts from trees.

Pack your hurricane kit or check last year’s to make sure everything is up to date. Stores typically sell out fast when a storm is on its way. Having everything you need ahead of time makes dealing with a storm much easier. Hurricanes can inflict horrible damage to our homes and communities. The organization with the award-winning program will present a special award to Christine Bagnati, HR Retail Specialist with Publix Supermarkets for her extraordinary commitment to career education at a virtual ceremony this month. Bagnati has created and hosted virtual field trips for more than 1000 Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe elementary and middle school students in 17 schools throughout this school year. “The pandemic curtailed the in-person trips to our stores
we’ve been doing with LFS for many years,” explained Bagnati. “We developed a great new collaboration to keep our young people connected with their futures in the workplace. It’s been a win-win for everyone.” Beyond the exposure to the jobs at Publix stores provided previously, the presentations included a comprehensive look at their manufacturing, distribution, and information technology centers. These visits support year-long career awareness and workplace skills lessons developed by LFS and presented by partner volunteers and teachers through its Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) and My Future Is Now (MFIN) programs. “As a Title I school, our students have limited exposure to career opportunities beyond

ith two well-situated Opportunity Zones, zoning changes and a robust street improvement program, the City of Hollywood is attracting major commercial real estate developers and investors. “Our strategic location and public investments – coupled with the tax benefits of the federal Opportunity Zone program – have set the stage for new developments that benefit our community,” said Herb Conde-Parlato, economic development manager, City of Hollywood. “We are now reviewing several new projects that will add vitality to our local economy by creating new jobs, while offering a wider array of housing, dining and shopping options to our residents.” Block 40 is a mixed-use development under construction at the southwest corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Young Circle at the site of the former Great Southern Hotel. The development is well underway and will include 166 upscale residential units and 103 hotel rooms with approximately 30,000 SF of commercial space. Soleste is a residential-retail project at 2001 Hollywood Boulevard in the downtown area. Miami-based Estate Investment Group is planning the development, which would include 350 apartments, 30,000 square feet of retail space and 497 parking spaces. The Bread Building plans call for a 25-story tower mixed-use luxury apartment development at the site of the former “Hollywood Bread Building” in the southeast quadrant of Young Circle. Nine Hollywood is a planned 18-story, mixed-use commercial, multi-family residential development, by Jackson Street Development LLC, with 226 units and 7,315 SF of retail space located just south of the ArtsPark at Young Circle at 320 South Federal Highway. Icon Office Building is a 72,000 SF Class A office building under construction with retail bays and space for a financial institution on the ground floor located at 1895 Tyler Street in Downtown Hollywood. Established by the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Opportunity Zones are designed to spur economic growth by reducing capital gains taxes on qualifying investments in designated geographic areas. The City of Hollywood moved quickly to capitalize on two large-scale Opportunity Zone designations, one in the downtown that includes all of Young Circle and the area between two major corridors, Federal Highway and Dixie Highway, and another on both sides of I-95 between Sheridan Street and Stirling Road. Raelin Storey, director of communications, marketing and economic development for the City of Hollywood says the city was ahead of the curve in marketing its Opportunity Zones, drawing a wave of interest among property owners, developers and investors. “The tax advantages have helped attract interest to these areas and in some cases have helped make projects by incorporating Opportunity Fund investment into a development team’s capital structure,” she said.
