October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
L
ast year more than 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 died, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (ABCF). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. It accounts for about ¼ of all cancers in women and 12 percent of all new cancer cases across all sexes. In the United States, there will be about 280,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed. Despite massive progress in diagnosis and treatment, about 15% of those diagnosed will eventually succumb to the disease. But, there is hope. Over the past 45 years, the five-year survival rate has significantly increased for breast cancer patients. In fact, people with localized disease at the time of diagnosis now have a 99% five-year survival rate, while the survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer, that has spread beyond her breast, is just 28%. Early detection is perhaps the most important thing. The ABCF recommends women should regularly conduct self-examinations beginning in their 20s and receive annual mammograms beginning in their 40s. There are many new promising therapies being tested and developed. More important than a new miracle drug, however, is identifying a lump or change in your body. And, if you do detect something, seek medical help. It could make all the difference.

Early in the night from 6-9 pm, the little ones can enjoy “Treat
Street”. The interactive trick-ortreat area is free and offers plenty of candy stations, a bounce house, plenty of “selfie” spaces, a costume contest, kid-friendly entertainment, and so much more. But later that evening after the little ghosts and goblins are tucked away in their beds, the real party starts. The “Hollyweird” Block Party will start at 9:00 pm and run through 2:00 am for the 21 and over-crowd. There is no cover charge, but the local business community will offer food and beverages for sale. Live music and entertainment will fill multiple stages and guests are encouraged to “dress to impress”. Adult costume contests with categories such as best group, sexiest, scariest, and best overall can win cash and prizes. “We are looking forward to partnering again with The New Hibernians of Hollywood to host
the wildly popular Hollyweird event in downtown Hollywood. roward County Public Schools (BCPS) launched a webbased dashboard to give parents up-to-date information on the number of within their school community who have tested positive for COVID-19. The dashboard, which is updated daily, can be broken down by students and faculty and is sortable by school.
The data are reported based on the day the positive test is reported to the school. Confirmed cases are as reported to the school system’s Risk Management and Coordinated Student Health Services, based on the date tested as reported to the District. Parents are cautioned that there could be delays in the reporting.
BCPS created the dashboard to give as much transparency as possible to families with children in school. The district reopened with mask mandates at all schools. The school board has been in a public battle with Governor Ron Desantis over the board’s decision to require masks. According to the New Your Times’ Coronavirus Case Count, Broward County has seen an increasing number of new cases since June. The county as a whole is currently averaging more than 2,000 new cases a day, which is the highest level of new cases since the epidemic began. The Broward County Commission has also created several dashboards to help residents get up-to-date information. These include a map showing the percent of residents who are vaccinated and a report on hospital utilization.

to Support Victims of Hurricane IDA

s Hurricane Ida picked up speed and intensity it became clear that coastal communities along Lousiana’s gulf coast were again going to face the worst. Residents put up storm shutters, boarded up windows, and purchased supplies. They cautiously watched digital tracking maps and made plans for possible evacuations. We were reminded, yet again, how important a Hurricane Kit is for families living in the tropics. Fortunately for us, the storm stayed to the west. Our neighbors along the gulf coast and in the northeast, of course, were not as fortunate. Hurricane Ida will likely be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in US history. The storm came ashore as a category 4 storm with winds up to 150mph. The powerful storm dumped record rains all the way to New York City, with significant flooding all along its path. The South Florida community, local char-
itable organizations, and local businesses stepped into action immediately following the storm. In fact, even before the storm left the islands, South Floridians were organizing supplies, raising funds, and dreaming up logistics plans. Several large donation drives raised money and supplies for impacted communities. Initial estimates project the cost of the storm’s damage at $95 billion or more. Much of that in Northeastern states hit by torrential rains, putting the storm into a league with other deadly cyclones that have crippled the region in recent years, according to analysts. ispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually throughout half of September and into the first half of October to promote and celebrate the rich history, colorful culture, and diversity of the Hispanic-American community. So, every year Broward County Public Schools does their part to celebrate ways that make everyone unique within their schools.
“The latest demographics of Colbert Elementary reflect an influx of a more Hispanic population than it had in years prior. This is another important reason to incorporate lessons and cultural activities into the curriculum,” explained first-grade teacher Mindy Rechter. “Celebrating Spanish heritage spirit week enables our students to connect to and learn about cultures different from their own.” The festivities included multiple theme days. On “Taco About It Tuesday” students were encouraged to come dressed in festive clothing. “Spanish Flag Day” followed, and the esteemed magnet school boasted a colorful display of various Latin countries’ flags. “Spanish Artist Day” wrapped the week as students, teachers, and faculty dressed like their favorite Hispanic artist, movie star, or musician. One fourth-grade scholar stated, “My favorite part of the week was seeing our
School Counselor, Ms. Morris, dress like a taco like me and my little brother for Taco-Bout It Tuesday! We had on a hat and mustache, but she was a live taco!” “As a sixth-year School Counselor, it always warms my heart to put a smile on students’ faces, even if that means dressing like a taco! HOLLYWOOD UPDATE By Mayor Josh Levy
Fellow Hollywood Residents, In a recent column, I wrote about our community’s COVID-19 numbers and how they reached the lowest levels since the pandemic began. Things looked hopeful in June. Unfortunately, that hope turned out to be short-lived, with July and August posting some of the highest local infection numbers yet. As I write this edition’s column, things are again looking hopeful, with our pandemic numbers trending downward once again. According to epidemiological models shared by the University of Florida, the current downward trend is projected to accelerate and take us back to low pandemic levels by October and into November. Let’s hope this turns out to be true. In the meantime, I urge everyone to continue to take the precautions that we know can help keep you, your family, and our community healthy. Vaccinations, wearing a mask when you’re in public, washing your hands frequently, and keeping your immune system strong remain the recommended mitigation measures that can reduce the chances of viral transmission and hospitalization. If you do get infected with COVID-19, there are better medical treatments available today than there were a year ago. One of these treatments is an infusion of monoclonal antibodies that have shown to be very effective against COVID-19 if administered in the early days of a symptomatic infection. Memorial Regional Hospital administers this treatment to appropriate patients, and the Florida Department of Health and its partners are administering this at no cost at C.B. Smith Park. Beyond COVID-19, there is an extensive amount of work being done at City Hall. By the time you are receiving this newsletter, we will have just passed a balanced city operating budget for Fiscal Year 2022. The budget maintains a flat operating millage rate of 7.4665 mills thanks to our city’s continued economic growth reaching a certified taxable property value of $18.9 billion. This value represents a nominal 3.61% in growth over last year, in large part due to the pandemic’s impact on Hollywood’s important leisure and hospitality industry. Nonetheless, coming off of 5 years of averaging 8% growth, and thanks to the various federal pandemic stabilization and stimulus funds, we are able to again maintain the same operating tax rate. With the dollars at hand for next year we are able to create seven additional firefighter positions, five additional sworn police officer positions, four body camera positions and community service officer positions for the beach and other areas of need. We will also be able to increase the cleaning and maintenance of our parks, improve the condition of the city’s athletic fields, improve city-wide landscaping, continue to increase sidewalk grinding and replacement, resurface more roads, improve our stormwater systems to combat flooding, increase tree trimming, unfreeze two code officer positions to extend code compliance coverage to 7 days a week and evenings, unfreeze a sanitation code officer’s position, and create a dedicated grants position to take advantage of city-wide grant opportunities.
