Even in complete and utter darkness, you can’t take your eyes off it. Night — it’s the great equalizer. One car blends into the next. Which is why when we designed the Audi A8, we started with the very first thing you see. Its LED headlights not only demand your full attention, they are also the closest re-creation to daylight of any car on the road.* Not to mention the most efficient.† See how the rest of the A8 will demand your attention at audiusa.com/A8. Calling all Job Seekers By Julie Levin
W
ith many Miramar residents
still struggling financially, the city is taking steps to help residents get back to work. In partnership with WorkForce One of Broward, they are putting together their 2012 Career Fair May 9 to help link job seekers, with businesses and organizations that have the “Help Wanted” sign out. “We want to provide our residents with a resource to assist in facilitating career opportunities,” said Natasha Hampton, the Director of Human Resources for the city. Close to 400 people are expected to turn out for the Career Fair, which will be held at the Miramar Cultural Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They’ll find as many as 35-40 business vendors, including several major companies, all of whom Hampton says are not only there to network, but to fill open positions as well. “It is not just coming to meet a vendor who owns a business or organization. Our focus this year is to make certain that the vendors who attend actually have employment opportunities,” Hampton said. This year, there will

also be a series of “mini success seminars” so attendees can walk away with strategies that will help them get back into the job market. The Career Fair is not only for adults, but teens too who might be looking for summer jobs. Hampton says surveys done following past city Career Fairs show they do work, because they do hear from residents who found employment as result. “This year, we want to increase the number of people who actually find job placement,” she said. She advises job seekers to dress appropriately and come prepared.”They definitely need to bring a positive attitude, be ready to speak on the spot about what their talents are and what they can bring to the organization,” she said. She also advises bringing copies of a resume. The 2012 Career Fair will be held Wednesday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Arts Center located at 2400 Civic Center Place (on Red Road, north of Miramar Parkway). For more information, please call 954-602-3816.

City Offers Free Health and Wellness Expo By Julie Levin
W
ith health costs spiraling, the city of Miramar is working
to make sure all residents have a way to stay on top of their health. They are offering their annual Health and Wellness Expo again this year, and are hoping residents take advantage of all that is being offered. “We know that health care is an issue and a lot of people can’t afford it and this is a way for people to know about the resources available in their community and at the same time, local doctors offices can get their name out there,” said Maria Jose Bustamante, the Youth and Family Service Superintendent for the city of Miramar. The Health and Wellness Expo will be held Thursday, May 10 at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event, which is open to the entire community and put together by the Social Services Department, usually draws anywhere from 200-300 people. Bustamante says it is a great opportunity for residents to undergo important free health screenings that could let them know if a visit to a doctor is called for. Bustamante says they’ve partnered with Memorial Hospital to offer blood pressure checks and cholesterol screenings. Guests interested in doing the cholesterol screening should fast before they come to the event to ensure a more accurate reading. Students from Nova Southeastern University School of Pharmacy will also offer advice on medication management. “People can bring their medications and ask questions about what the side effects are, or whether it will interfere with over the counter products, or what they should be eating,” said Bustamante. Nova Southeastern Podiatry students will also offer screenings on foot health. There will also be educational displays, information tables, lectures, community resources and demonstrations, including a Jazzercise class for seniors. The city often offers free health screening at its senior center, but hosts the annual Health and Wellness

Expo to provide the same opportunities for non-senior residents. “We always get requests for more Health Expos and screenings,” said Bustamante, who added that depending on the turnout, the city may plan another Health Expo later in the year. The Health and Wellness Expo will be held at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex, located at 6700 Miramar Parkway in Miramar. It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Firefighters Host CPR Training Day By Julie Levin
D
ozens of Miramar residents turned out
recently to help learn a few new skills that could one day help them save a life. As they learned, the students were also lending a hand to some of the city’s firefighters, who are hoping to take part in an international medical competition. “Residents are getting a great opportunity to learn CPR and we are getting a great opportunity to fundraise for our cause,” said Tim Roche, a Training Captain with the Miramar Fire Department. Roche led a team of firefighters who hosted a series of Adult Heartsaver and AED Classes March 17 at the Sunset Lakes Community Center, located at 2801 SW 186th Avenue in Miramar. There were four 2-hour classes, and Roche says Capt. Equipped with the gear they’ve brought and supplies, the CPR classes are often given at the Miramar Fire Department on smaller scale, but medical teams rush in to simulate how they would respond in real life. Miramar Resident Named “Women Extraordinaire” By Julie Levin
A
longtime Miramar resident has been named
to a prestigious honor by a regional business publication. Maridee Bell, vice president of Sunbeam Properties and Sunbeam Development, was recently named Women Extraordinaire for 2011 by the publication Business Leader for both her work on the job and in the community. “I’m really glad I had the honor of being selected because it recognized in large part my civic work, which is very important to me, as well as my professional work,” said Bell, who has lived in Miramar since 1991. Business Leader honors top women business leaders each year with their Women Extraordinaire Awards, which are held not only in South Florida, but throughout the south. Winners are either C-level executives, business owners, or civic /community leaders who have demonstrated significant business achievement and community involvement. Bell has made a name for herself by heading up leasing and marketing at the Miramar Park of Commerce. Last year, she focused on reducing the vacancy rate at the Park, which now stands at only six percent. During her tenure, Bell and her team have completed nearly 500 leases and created a hub of healthcare companies in the Park, which now accounts two-thirds of the Park’s business. She credits her 19 years with Sunbeam with giving her tremendous opportunity to grow. “It is a great job, company and team that I work with and I am just really blessed.” said Bell, who along with husband John have raised daughters Kaitlin, 22, Alicia, 20
and Victoria, 17. She is equally enthused by her civic work, which is heavily geared towards giving back to members of the U.S. military, their families and loved ones. She volunteers for the Lone Survivor Foundation, a volunteer organization that works with wounded warriors and their families through health, wellness, and therapeutic support; Soldier’s Angels, a volunteer organization providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families; Brooke Army Medical Center and the associated four Fisher Houses in San Antonio, Texas. She has organized two supply drives for America’s Moms for Soldiers, collecting more than a ton of supplies for deployed troops, and organized a food drive for the United Way of Broward County with participation from 40 companies in the Park and their employees. She also is on the board of directors of the Miramar Police Athletic League, and oversees the donation made by Sunbeam Properties and the Miramar Park of Commerce to Hangin’ with 5-0, a summer program for at-risk teens in Miramar. Professionally, she is a member of the Miramar Economic Development Advisory Council and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.

Miramar Teen Selected as Student Ambassador By Julie Levin
A
Miramar teen is one of four local students
selected to a prestigious honor with the Broward League of Cities. Jocelyn Flores, 16, a junior at Miramar High School was one of four high school juniors countywide chosen to serve as a Student Ambassador for the organization. The program is designed to encourage high school students who plan to pursue a career in public administration, political science or other government-related fields. “I was so excited. It really means a lot to me,” said the Miramar teen. Created in 1957, the Broward League of Cities represents the 31 municipal governments and more than 80 associate government, non-profit and business organizations within Broward County. The organization is dedicated to increasing awareness and providing resolutions to issues that affect dayto-day operations at the county, state, and federal levels. Its Student Ambassador program gives high school students an introductory look at all the issues involved in public service. That’s exactly what Flores has her eye on for the future. “Right now, I want to use these opportunities to really just observe the different areas of public service to get an understanding Jocelyn Flores about what I want to do,” said Flores, who is considering a career in constitutional law. Flores has already served on the Youth Advisory Council for the city of Miramar. Through that program, she said she had a chance to shadow local city leaders and learn about the many issues affecting her community, and how younger generations can step
up to help resolve them. Now that she has been selected as a Student Ambassador for the Broward League of Cities, she wants to learn the same thing on a county level. “ I want to see how such a diverse range of people are able to work together and overcome all their differences to make it such a successful county,” she said. During her two-year term, Flores will have the chance to attend Broward League of Cities general membership meetings, board of directors meetings and other functions they are a part of. Students also have the opportunity to meet with elected officials and learn the intricacies of governing at the municipal level. The Student ambassadors also post’ monthly “My View” columns to detail their experiences in the program and views on current events. The other new Broward League of Cities student ambassadors are Zach Gorwitz of Cypress Bay High School, Brian Mazur of McFatter Technical High School, and Carlos Mondesir of Dillard High School. They join current student ambassadors Feyaad Allie, a senior at Coral Springs High School; Chad Klitzman, a senior at Cypress Bay High School; Alex Weiner, a senior at Stoneman Douglas, College Academy; and Kimberly Willoughby, a senior at Pembroke Pines Charter High School. To learn more about the Student Ambassador program, please visit the League’s website at www.browardleague.org.

Exercise and Fun Highlight Dolphin Bay Field Day By Julie Levin
I
t’s not often students are encouraged to run around during a
school day at Dolphin Bay Elementary School, but when it comes to the school’s annual Field Day, just about anything goes. This year’s Field Day presented a bit more of a challenge for the Miramar school. Due to budget cuts, they lost their PE teacher who usually coordinates the event. Recognizing the importance of physical activity for their students, the school’s PTA, parents and teachers rallied together to raise
money to fund a PE program, and also sponsor and coordinate the Field Day events. Each grade got its own full day of competitive events. Students participated in events including the scooter/bowling relay, crab walk, three-legged race, sack race, egg race, relay race, soccer relay and the ever popular tug-of-war. It was a double elimination event, with the winning class in each grade receiving a trophy. Awards were also given to the class in each grade with the best sportsmanship. Parents were out in force to cheer on their children and their classmates.

here were domestic names and flashy imports, older models
and a few that looked like they had just rolled off the assembly line. The 8th Annual Key Club Car Show at Everglades High School had a little something for nearly any car enthusiast. “They’ve got some really unique models here, and things I haven’t seen before,” admitted Tony Opinno, 26, of Miramar. The Key Club Car Show was held March 29 at the school as a fundraiser for Miramar’s Relay for Life. Members of the school’s Key Club, who plan on taking part in the Relay event, hoped to raise as much as $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. It was the 8th year for the event, which started out as just a small car show, but is now attracting entries from all over South Florida. “We keep growing every year, and this year we really worked on building up the entertainment,” said Lisa Gould, the Key Club Advisor at Everglades High School.

There was a DJ on hand, as well as food trucks and live entertainment for those not interested in the cars, tires and engines. Among those performing were members of Jus Hip Hop, Dancers Gallery and a fashion show from members of the Teen Board. Jarred Aiken of Miramar served as one of three judges looking over the cars. Aiken is a graduate of both the school and Key Club, and displayed his own Honda Civic SI at the last two car shows. He said he looked at all elements of the cars he inspected, from the tires up to the roof, and everything in between. He was looking for elements that were unique, but not overdone. “It has to flow, look nice, one thing has to connect to another to make it seem seamless,” he said. Awards and trophies were given out in the categories of 1st, 2nd, 3rd overall, best in show, best sound, best interior, best domestic, best import, best student car, best engine performance, and more. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. The Everglades Key Club has close to 150 members, who work with the Miramar Kiwanis Club on community and service projects throughout the year. Among the projects they’ve taken part in, street clean-ups, water sales, book drives, food drives and more. “Whatever they need help with, we are happy to do,” said Gould.

Miramar Teams Score at Flag Football Jamboree By Julie Levin
F
ootball is not just for boys anymore. Proof of that was in
full swing recently at the Miami Dolphins Indoor Training facility in Davie, where the team hosted its annual Girls High School Flag Jamboree. Presented by Under Armour, the day-long event featured 13 games and more than 400 athletes, highlighting some of the top flag football programs in Broward County. “It was an amazing day.” said Twan Russell, Miami Dolphins Director of Youth and Community Programs. “The Jamboree has grown to something we never could have conceived.” Among the teams taking part, two squads from Miramar. Everglades High beat South Plantation High 32-0, while Miramar High fell to Monarch by a score of 7-6. Almost more important than the score however, is the idea that women’s football is taking hold around the country. Russell says when they created the Jamboree 15 years ago, it was a novel concept and only six teams took part. Now even the NFL is checking out the Dolphins Jamboree to help spread the idea nationwide. “If we want to help the game, it can’t just be a boy’s game,” he said.”It has to be women and men playing football.” The Jamboree was created 15 years ago as a joint effort with the Miami Dolphins and Broward County Athletic Association. Both the players and coaches alike say the partnership provides for a special experience, one that few NFL teams provide. “We have had a great partnership with the Miami Dolphins,” said Rocky Gillis, BCAA County Athletic Director. “The games are very important because it gives our students great exposure. They were very excited to walk through the door and go onto the field. This was a very unique experience and we are fortunate to be part of this great day.” Russell says women’s flag football is exciting to watch and he expects it be played on the collegiate level within the next ten years. In addition to the Jamboree, the Dolphins also host a women’s flag football clinic during the year. He says since most women get

their first chance to play in high school, they bring a strong desire to the game because they are trying catch up to the training of their male counterparts, many of whom have had the chance to play since they were young. But make no mistake Russell says, the girls play just as hard as the boys. The games are seven on seven, and there is throwing, running, catching, pass rushing and blocking. “It is a physical game even though they are not tackling each other. It is not powder puff by any means. It is competitive and they are playing very passionately,” he said.

message from the mayor
Dear Miramar Residents: Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley
O
ne of the greatest roles I have had in my life,
other than serving as your Mayor, has been that of a mother. I know that as the summer approaches, many families are looking forward to an array of activities that make our lives more fulfilled and productive. While we think of family fun, we must also be thinking of getting our children ready for the summer. It is sometimes hard to believe that even though the City is not a coastal community, we have a significant amount of water in the form of swimming pools, canals, and lakes. This fact makes it imperative that we provide our children the necessary skills to protect themselves, through swimming lessons. The lessons will not only provide our children with safety skills, but allow them to fully enjoy the benefits of swimming. Our city offers year round swimming lessons at all our pools. Who knows, maybe the next Michael Phelps could be from Miramar! In addition to our pools, there are vast arrays of summer activities in all of our community centers. Our city hosts summer camps for all ages in different types of activities. For instance, our Cultural Arts Center hosts a Summer Children’s Theater where the kids’ hard work culminates in the performance of a Broadway play! In addition, we host sports camps with concentrations in tennis, aquatics, and sports fundamentals. I believe that even though we have experienced difficulties and learned to do more with less; our city will work diligently to help you provide the basics in your child’s life. We must always strive to protect our families, ensure their well-being, and prepare them for the future. Today, now more than ever this is true. What makes our actions more urgent is that our kids are watching how we face the world during these difficult times. We must show them that together with the programs and services offered through the City, we can still make our lives better. Have a great and safe summer!

Divorce in Florida By Maritza Gonzalez
I
f you or your spouse has decided to file for divorce
in Florida, at least one of you must be a resident of the state for at least six months or a member of an armed force stationed in the state. Also called a “dissolution” of the marriage, Florida divorces legally begin when you or your spouse files a “Petition for Dissolution of Marriage” with the Family Division of the local circuit court. The other spouse is served with the paperwork and given time to respond. If both you and your spouse agree on how to divide property, debt and responsibilities for any children, the divorce can be finalized without a trial. In the divorce process, any assets and debts amassed during the marriage, referred to as “marital assets,” will be divided “equitably,” or fairly, upon divorce. Any assets you had before marriage may be considered “non-marital assets” if they were kept separated from property acquired during the marriage. You and your spouse can each retain your non-marital assets. Generally, judges will divide assets equally, unless there is a basis for unequal distribution. The judge will consider both you and your spouse’s economic circumstances and the contributions each of you made to the marriage.

On the issue of support, alimony is an extension of the obligation for spouses to support each other financially during the marriage. In ordering alimony, the Court considers factors which include, among others, the standard of living during the marriage; the length of the marriage; and the age and physical condition of each spouse. Divorce laws in Florida include child support guidelines that judges use to calculate the support needed for a child and how much each parent has to pay. The court looks at both parent’s incomes and the child’s health and child care costs. Lastly, disputes concerning children are resolved by the Court based on what is in the “best interests” of the child. Unless there is a reason that it would be detrimental to your child’s upbringing, the court will usually grant shared responsibility. Sometimes the court will give one parent responsibility over specific aspects of a child’s welfare, such as primary residence, education or medical care. Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and Eye Strain

he American Optometric Association (AOA)
reports that over 7 out of 10 of the Americans that work each day from a computer monitor (about 143 million people) suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS) or eye strain. Prolonged computer use can result in eye stress and effect typical vision processes in kids and adults. If you are working at a computer longer than 2 hours each day it is likely that you will suffer symptoms of computer vision syndrome.
Signs of CVS
Signs of Computer Vision Syndrome include vision difficulties such as dry eyes, blurred vision, inability to focus or double vision and pain such as headaches, back aches and heavy eyes. If you are experiencing a number of these symptoms you may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome.
What Are The Causes of Computer Induced Eye Fatigue?
Eye fatigue from prolonged computer use is caused by the necessity for our visual processing pathways to adapt to processing text on a computer screen in a different way than they do for letters in print. While our eyes are used to focusing on printed material that contains solid black characters with sharp edges, they are less familiar with characters on a digital screen that lack the same degree of contrast and sharpness. Words on a screen are created by combinations of tiny dots of light (pixels), which are most luminous at the center and diminish in intensity toward the edges. Therefore it is harder for our eyes to focus on these images. Instead, our eyes reduce focus to the ‘’resting point of accommodation’’ or RPA. Our eyes involuntarily adjust to the RPA and then have to make a great effort to regain focus on the text. The continuous strain on the muscles of the eyes to focus results in the fatigue and eye strain that is sometimes present during and after use of a computer or digital device. CVS isn’t a matter of concern just for those who spend a lot of time on computers. Other electronic gadgets such as smart phones or tablets can cause similar conditions and in some cases even worse. Since mobile screens are often small, in addition to pixilated, the user often strains even more to focus on images.

Ergonomics for Computer Vision Syndrome
Ergonomics, or changing your work environment to reduce strains in vision or posture, can help relieve some of the discomfort of computer vision syndrome. Proper lighting and frequent breaks will cause some relief. However, since ergonomics alone cannot resolve a visual problem, using ophthalmic computer eyeglasses is also necessary.

If you think that you might be at risk for CVS, you should make an appointment with an eye care professional sooner than later. At a computer vision exam, your eye care professional will perform tests to detect any particular vision problems that might worsen symptoms of computer eye strain. Depending on the results of these tests, your optometrist may prescribe prescription computer eyeglasses to reduce discomfort at your screen. An anti-reflective coating is highly recommended for computer glasses. An anti-reflective coating lessens glare that may interfere with your ability to focus on images on your screen.

ith today’s advanced medical technology,
new treatment modalities are introduced every year. Omnilux Medical has developed a new generation of minimally-invasive light technology. This clinically proven system has achieved five FDA clearances, including mild to moderate acne, periorbital wrinkles, wound healing and muscular pain management. This device utilizes a light-emitting diode (LED) as a light source for non-ablative skin rejuvenation. Aging skin presents with unpleasant looking changes, such as wrinkles, dyspigmentation (brown spots), telangiectasias (spider veins), and a loss of elasticity. Most skin rejuvenation treatment modalities work through ablative mechanisms, where the superficial part of the skin, the epidermis, is removed and the underlying dermis is stimulated to produce new collagen. Non-ablative therapy aims to improve photo-aged skin without destroying the epidermis, therefore, there is less down-time and signs of external skin damage. The Omnilux System is based on narrow band light emitting diodes (LED’s). Each treatment with this device delivers pure, optimized, narrow band light through a matrix of LED’s carefully positioned to deliver optimum light doses to the treatment area. This type of phototherapy is a non-thermal and atraumatic treatment which stimulates cell activities and functions through a photobiomodulative effect. Photobiomodulation is the process where the delivered photons are absorbed by chromophores in the skin. These photons act on the cellular level along cellular membranes and mitochondria resulting in modulation of various cell functions. The changes that occur result in new collagen synthesis to exert the effects leading to skin rejuvenation. Controlled studies have been performed to demonstrate the clinical efficacy of LED phototherapy. We are now utilizing this skin rejuvenation treatment technique in our office. The advantages of Omnilux light therapy are that it is non-invasive, non-ablative, and safe for patients. Omnilux stimulates cells without generating or delivering heat to the skin surface. It acts athermally without causing damage to the epidermis or dermal tissue. Therefore, there is no downtime for patients or associated redness, blistering or peeling that often occur with ablative skin rejuvenation modalities. Large surface areas such as the face and chest can be treated. This system is also used in conjunction with Botox and injectable fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane to diminish post-procedure swelling and bruising and accelerate healing. My Aestheticians are currently using the Omnilux light system with a new peel from Neova—the Renaissance 2 peel. The combination of the two treatment modalities is highly effective in diminishing the visible signs of aging, i.e., hyperpigmentation, facial lines and wrinkles, and visibly softens superficial scarring and can help control acne. Controlled studies are being performed to determine the benefits of this LED Phototherapy in accelerating healing after surgery as well. This therapy promotes the body’s natural cellular processes to improve physical appearance and enhance skin rejuvenation techniques. To learn more about this new light treatment, and how it will benefit you, please call our office at 954-659-7760 to schedule an appointment with one of our two aestheticians.

Letting Go With Love By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC
W
hen you are continuously making yourself
crazy expecting something from someone who has nothing to give or feeling frustrated because you are trying to make a person someone he or she is not, then it is time to look at your definition of love. Love is not supposed to be painful. Yes, there is pain involved in any relationship but if it is painful most of the time then something is not working. Unfortunately, you may be pretending that a person is someone he or she is not. You may be spending precious time trying to get someone to love you in a certain way, when that person cannot or will not?

It is time to let it go. It is time to let go of your insistence that they become the person you want them to be as well as let go of demanding that they give you something they are neither willing nor capable of giving. This does not necessarily mean that you have to immediately stop loving that person. It means that you love them for who they are. You release that person to be who he or she actually is. You stop trying to make that person be someone he or she is not. You deal with your feelings and walk away from the destructive cycle of broken promises, high demands, and endless frustrations. You learn to detach with love. Being detached and letting go with love does not mean that you cannot enjoy anything or enjoy being with anyone. Rather, it refers to that very strong clinging behavior to anything or anyone that causes you problems; that behavior insists on a reality that does not exist and creates havoc trying to achieve it. Detachment is the determination to be free. Just as Melody Beattie states in her book The Language of Letting Go: "We learn to let go of people we love, people we like, and those we don't particularly care for. We separate ourselves, and our process, from others and their process. We relinquish our tight hold and our need to control in our relationships. We take responsibility for ourselves; we allow others to do the same. We detach with the understanding that life is unfolding exactly as it needs to, for others and ourselves. The way life unfolds is good, even when it hurts. And ultimately, we can benefit from even the most difficult situations. We do this with the understanding that a Power greater than ourselves is in charge, and all is well." If you are struggling with your reactions to your loved ones and want to explore alternatives call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Florida Supreme Court Mediator, and Parent Coordinator, at A Place for Growth in Weston at 954-384-9373 or visit www.APlaceforGrowth.com.

Have No Fear, Bioidenticals Are Here By Michael F. Augustino, MD, FACOG
I
t has been more than eight years since the over-
publicized and over-exaggerated risks of hormone therapy hit the news. This has been a serious disservice to women, creating a fear of hormones which has been blown out of proportion. Out of concern for my patients, many of whom suffer from changes associated with their ovaries in approach to menopause or in reaching full menopause, and a genuine interest in finding a safe and suitable solution, I spent nearly a year researching medical literature with regard to bioindentical hormones. I discovered that those studies, which caused all the fear, had to do with synthetic hormones. Those risks do not pertain to bioidentical hormone therapy. Hormone therapy is nothing to fear. Hormones are used in many other aspects of medicine. Where would we be today if it were not for insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas to regulate blood sugar? Insulin therapy allows many of my diabetic patients to experience a normal prenatal course and give birth to healthy babies. Hormones are also used to regulate thyroid disorders. Even children are prescribed growth hormone therapy if they are not growing properly. It is also a viable treatment for menopausal women. When you consider today’s population and average life span, women will spend over 1/3 of their lives in menopause (lack of ovarian function). I have a list available in my exam rooms of over 35 symptoms commonly associated with menopause and perimenopause. Many times in greeting a patient, they will express that “I am having 30 out of 35 of these symptoms.” At some point in a woman’s life, menopause is inevitable. Bioidentical hormones can alleviate the symptoms associated with lack of estrogen and testosterone as these levels fall with age. Quality of life is enhanced as skin tone, hair, nails, energy, libido, and memory
are all improved. Bioidentical hormone therapy also offers many health benefits. After using natural hormones, women experience an increase in bone density which protects against osteoporosis. Muscle metabolism is also improved leading to an increase in muscle mass and reduction of body fat. Testosterone protects the heart and heart disease is the number one medical problem in this country. It is important to point out that bioidentical hormone therapy is not a one size fits all treatment. In other words, every patient has their therapy individualized, so it is custom prepared to fill their body’s deficiencies and put the body back into balance. Patients sleep better, therapeutic levels are more consistent, and everything improves over time. Patients who are using bioidentical hormone therapy have a high degree of satisfaction. I am consistently told: “I should have done this sooner,” “my children want to be around me again,” and “I have more energy.” Men can also benefit from bioidentical hormone therapy. As men age, testosterone levels decrease. With hormone therapy men notice increased muscle strength, more energy, and a better libido. Don’t take my word for it, do your own research; talk with others who have benefited from bioidentical hormone therapy. It’s a natural and safe way to improve your health and quality of life. Fleas, Ticks and Your Pets
“Lucy”
By Christie Waldie-Torres, DVM
S
outh Florida is located in what’s considered
to be the flea capital. We also have our fair share of ticks. Both parasites can be detrimental to our pets’ health. In one day, a single flea can bite your pet 400 times, consume more than their body weight of your pet’s blood, and a female can lay hundreds of eggs on your pet. Fleas inject their saliva when they are feeding and many pets are actually allergic to the saliva. This causes them to become extremely itchy and they develop hair loss and skin infections. Fleas can also lead to anemia in severely infested pets and can transmit tapeworms. Ticks transmit at least a dozen diseases including Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and tularemia, all of which can be fatal and transmitted to humans. Severe tick infestations can lead to anemia as well. Fortunately, there are many effective products available to control flea and tick infestations. It is important to discuss the product you are using with your veterinarian, since many over the counter (OTC) products may be harmful to your pet. Many also contain synthetic pyrethrins, which many fleas are resistant to and are therefore not very effective. It is very important to read the package label carefully. Products labeled for use in dogs only should NEVER be used on cats. One ingredient called permethrin is lethal to cats. It is also important to pay attention to the age and weight the product is intended for. Using a product intended for an older or larger dog can cause dangerous side effects. If you suspect your pet is having a reaction to an OTC product, wash the product off (if applied topically) and seek veterinary care immediately. Many of us are opting for a more natural route to controlling fleas and ticks. Research shows, however, that many of the natural remedies do not work and some citric extracts can actually be toxic to cats. Diatomaceous earth, which can be used in the environment, has to be applied very carefully. If it is inhaled, silicone particles can end up in your lungs. Again, it is highly recommended that you discuss flea and tick control with your veterinarian. To clear up a flea and tick infestation, it is necessary to treat the environment. It is recommended that a licensed exterminator be used. Fleas and ticks are sensitive to sunlight and humidity so they tend to hide in shaded and protected habitats such as under shrubs, under bushes, and under porches. If you already have an infestation, make sure both the pet and the environment is treated. All pets in the household should be on a flea/tick control product and both the inside and outside of your home need to be treated. It can take a few months to clear up an infestation but doing so will keep you and your pet healthy. If you have any questions regarding flea and tick control, contact your veterinarian. They should be more than happy to discuss them with you. Using a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan to Keep Your Home and Investment Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost consumers are familiar with a simple Chapter 7 bank-
ruptcy in which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and all unsecured debt (credit cards, medical debt, etc.) is wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. In fact, your lender has the right to continue a foreclosure process on your home during a Chapter 7 bankruptcy with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the market value of the home. Yet many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures instead of liquidating debts. A Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, credit card and other unsecured debt negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, reduced student loan payments, IRS liens, reduced car payments, and even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties. In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed for the first mortgage on your principal residence must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home, have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property, and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If in addition, you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team.

ast month I wrote an article about proposed
changes to our alimony laws in the state of Florida. There was a proposal that was in fact passed by the State House of Representatives which would have ended the possibility of permanent alimony in this state. Permanent Alimony could be awarded if the couple was in a long term marriage (17 years or more) and the other requirements of “need” and “ability” existed in the case. If Permanent Alimony was awarded, the receiving spouse would be entitled to a monthly payment until such time as the receiving spouse was to remarry or either party died. There were other changes proposed as well. After much lobbying and debate, this proposal did not get passed by the State Senate and therefore did not become law. This, however, does not mean that the issue is forever forgotten and I would not be surprised if this matter came before the state legislature again next term.

In the meantime, I thought it might be best to summarize the existing laws concerning alimony so there is no misunderstanding as to what was merely a proposal versus what is in fact existing law. Florida lists several factors in determining whether alimony is appropriate. Some of these factors are: ▸▸ The standard of living established during the marriage ▸▸ The duration of the marriage ▸▸ The financial resources of each party ▸▸ The age and health of each party If based upon the above (as well as some other factors contained within the law) alimony is warranted, the issue then becomes what form of alimony? There are several possibilities. Each of the choices primarily depends on the length of marriage. As stated earlier in the article, a long term marriage is defined as a marriage of 17 years or more. This results in a presumption of Permanent Alimony. Even with such a presumption, an award of permanent alimony is not automatic. Marriage of less than 7 years is considered a short term marriage. A short term marriage could result in “Bridge the Gap” alimony, which is awarded to assist a party by providing support to allow the party to make a transition from being married to being single. A marriage of greater than 7 years is considered a moderate term marriage and could result in an award of Durational Alimony. The purpose of Durational Alimony is to provide a party with economic assistance for a set period of time. The above are just guidelines and there are in fact other factors which must be considered. As previously stated, the length of marriage is just one facto the Courts consider. It is best to consult with an experienced family law attorney for a further explanation.

Youth Baseball Making a Comeback in Miramar By Julie Levin
S
houts of “Play Ball” should once again ring out across base-
ball fields in Miramar soon. Thanks to a grant from a national organization, the Miramar Police Athletic League (PAL) is putting together a new youth baseball program, and they are looking for players and coaches who are ready to play. “This is a wonderful opportunity, not only for our program, but for the children who play the game,” said Ann Lee, Program Director for Miramar PAL. According to Lee, Miramar PAL was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $8,477 from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund. Since its formation by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association in 1999, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund has handed out more than 575 grants to organizations in the U.S. and worldwide. Approximately 300,000 youth players have benefited from programs and facilities supported by the fund. In Miramar, the grant will go towards helping to get the program off the ground. Organizers plan on purchasing the basics, like helmets, bats, baseballs and catchers gear, so that the players will be safe and be able to learn the fundamentals of the great American pastime. “This will allow us to buy the equipment that everyone needs and can share,” said Lee. The Miramar Police Athletic League provides year-round educational, athletic, civic and crime prevention activities for children ages 3-17 through a cooperative partnership between the police and the community. They already have a large soccer and basketball program up and running, but will now take a swing at baseball. Lee says the it is great news for young ballplayers, who haven’t had a local youth baseball option in Miramar in at least five years. “This hasn’t been any baseball at all, you had to go quite a ways to find baseball program which isn’t always convenient for residents,” she said. Right now, PAL is looking for ball players ages 3-16. Games will be played at Miramar Athletic Park, as well as Perry Park-Wellman Field. Depending on their numbers, they may get in a short season for older players before the summer, and then hope to start again in the fall. “Even if we only have a couple of teams to get it started, that will generate enough interest so that we can bring it back again in the fall,” Lee said. They are also looking for volunteer coaches, including high school ball players looking for community service hours.
