It’s Back-to-School Time, Again!
T
here’s an old adage, “Time flies when you’re having fun.”
That’s certainly the case this summer. As hard as it is to believe, it’s time to start planning for back-to-school. That means stocking up on school supplies, scheduling school physicals, and, for kids, enjoying the last few days of staying up late and sleeping in. Soon we will be busy with our school-time routines, juggling carpool, sports practice, and after-school activities. With that also comes the daily rush to get everything, including homework and dinner, done in time. So until that first day of school arrives, let’s take an extra moment to enjoy the last few weeks of summer with our loved ones. Plan a family outing to the beach, or even the backyard pool, or invite some friends over for a backyard barbecue. Before you know it, we’ll be back-to-school and back to our busy lives. Relish these final days of summer!

at a huge party thrown at Miramar Regional Park July 4th. The City of Miramar hosted its 4th of July Concert and Fireworks event to celebrate the anniversary of American freedom. Moms and dads carting the kids, lawn chairs and blankets poured into the park beginning at 6 p.m. to find the best spot to catch the fireworks later in the evening. Many had spent time earlier in the day enjoying barbecues and picnics with family and friends. The free, fun-filled family event also included live entertainment, inflatable rides for the children and food & beverages.

Hard at play: children at one of Miramar’s early childhood programs
In operation for more than 20 years, the popular Early Childhood Programs often average as many as 500 youngsters between all of its centers. The Early Childhood Program philosophy is based on the belief that a child care, preschool, after school or camp program; should provide the physical, social, emotional and intellectual activities which enable each child a positive learning experience. The overall program is designed to grow with each child’s needs. Age appropriate activities and an anti-bias curriculums are followed to assure quality learning experiences. “We believe in taking care of our children first,” said Joyce Donaldson, Operations Manager with the City of Miramar. Openings for infants through the after school program fill up fast. All of the programs include free formula and food for infants and free breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack for all other ages. They accept Family Central. The Early Childhood Program is also accepting enrollments for VPK (Voluntary PreKindergarten) programs at five of their centers. The VPK program includes breakfast and lunch. Extended hours are available at select centers and they do accept Family Central. “The VPK program is totally free, but the childcare program that runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., there is a charge depending on the child’s age and how long they stay at the facility,” said Donaldson. The City of Miramar’s Early Childhood Programs are Nationally Accredited BY APPLE, Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment which recognizes their commitment to provide quality learning programs. Programs are licensed by the Bureau of Children and Family Services, Child Care Licensing and Enforcement Division. Miramar Fire Rescue Squad Wins International Red Cross Competition By Julie Levin
S
core one for the “Underdogs!” Despite having limited time to
train together and getting used to the climate 1,200 of miles from home, Miramar’s Advanced Life Support Competition Team recently took first place in a prestigious international competition. Nicknamed the “Underdogs, the 4-man team was recently named the winners of the 2012 Mexican Red Cross Advanced Life Support Competition. The team was the only representative from the United States. “The City of Miramar fire-rescue has always known what a great job their members do for the community, it is nice to know that the rest of the world can see that now as well,” said Bill Huff, a Division Chief with the Miramar Fire-Rescue Department The “Underdogs” went up against seven teams from throughout Mexico during the competition, which was held recently in Mexico City. The competition site alone presented a challenge for the team from Florida. Mexico City has an elevation of more than 7,000 feet, a far cry from Miramar which is just 6 feet above sea level. Miramar was represented by Captains Jermaine McFarlane and Tim Roche, as well as Firefighter/Paramedics Javon Arcelay and Jon Bryan who practiced several Miramar’s Advanced Life Support Competition Team: (l-r) Firefighter/Paramedic Javon Arcelay, times a week to get ready for the comCaptain Tim Roche, Firefighter/Paramedic Jon Bryan, Captain Jermaine McFarlane. petition. The team also raised funds
to make the trip to Mexico by conducting CPR classes for the community, as well as selling t-shirts with their nickname on them. Once in Mexico, the squad faced daunting competition. Many similar competitions test the knowledge, skills and abilities of teams with a rapid set of circumstances lasting only 30 to 60 minutes total. The Mexico City competition lasted nearly 24 hours, testing not only the team’s ability Members of the team handling a to respond to rapidly occurring events, but also scenario during the competition testing their stamina and resolve. In the first rounds, the squad handled everything from a “crush” injury, to a child whose trachea tube was blocked and a firefighter who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while performing a search of a burning building. In the preliminary rounds, competition crews were also faced with several other scenarios that had a “tactical” element. One of these scenarios was a person that broke their leg while using a “Zip line”, which is also the same form of transportation that rescuers had to use to access the patient. The other scenario involved a window washer that had a diabetic emergency while washing windows, for which the only means of access was to “rappel” down. Once the eight hour long preliminary round was completed the teams were given a two-way radio and instructed to pay close attention to the communications coming over the radio. They returned to their hotel rooms, but six hours later were again sent out on a variety of calls, with the finale being a simulated bomb explosion with multiple patients. The Miramar team came home with first place honors in both rounds.

Coffee with the Commissioner By Julie Levin
G
ot a concern about the city? Do you want to know the very
latest about what’s happening in Miramar? If so, there is still time this month to take part in a series of innovative and informal gatherings over a cup of coffee with one of the City commissioners. Since mid-July, Miramar Commissioner Alexandra Davis has been criss-crossing coffee houses and restaurants in Miramar. She has been hosting a meet and greet series known as “A Coffee and a Chat” with your Commissioner” in an effort to meet residents, and listen to their concerns over a cup of coffee.”It is important to me as a Commissioner to be available to meet Miramar residents out in the community and hear their concerns. Anything to aid in bringing City Hall to the people, making it more convenient for residents to speak face-to-face with me to discuss and address those issues that are most important to them, is the basis of my commitment to serve,” Commissioner Davis said. “A Coffee and a Chat” got underway July 11 at the McDonalds Miramar City Commissioner Alexandra Davis located at 172nd Avenue and Miramar Parkway and then moved to the Dunkin Donuts at Miramar Parkway and 62nd Avenue. There were 12 meet and greets planned in all, with sessions scheduled for three hours. The Commissioner said she wanted to pick meeting spots that stretch as far as the City borders. Several of the meeting spots were in the eastern sections of Miramar, while others were in the newer sections out west. Some of the locations selected were Dunkin Donuts, La Caretta, The Latin House, McDonalds, Winn Dixie, IHOP and more. It’s a new program, but one the Commissioner had high hopes for.”It is indeed the first time I am reaching out to residents in this forum, but it is keeping in line with my goal of bringing City Hall to the residents. I am truly excited to be the first Commissioner to reach out to residents in this way,” said Commissioner Davis. There are two “Coffee and a Chat” sessions on the calendar for August. They are set for August 8 at the McDonald’s, located at 14301 Miramar Parkway in the Monarch Lakes Shopping Plaza, and August 10 at the Latin Café, located at 11352 Miramar Parkway, in the Miramar Crossings Plaza. Both run from 8:00 a.m. – 11 a.m. If you would like more information and an update on future “Coffee and a Chat” locations, please contact the Commission offices at 954-602-3130 or send an email to apdavis@ci.miramar.fl.us.

Miramar Celebrates Its Caribbean-American Heritage By Julie Levin
I
t was supposed to be a five-hour event celebrating the diversity
and influence of Miramar’s growing Caribbean-American community, but Mother Nature had other plans. Just about halfway into the Culture in the Night Concert Series June 23, lightning and heavy rains took center stage and organizers had no choice but to call the concert off early. “We only got three of our acts in. But we really had no choice,” said Terry Griffin, the Director of Miramar’s Community Services Department. As many as 500 people turned out at Perry/Wellman Field in the early hours of the show to dance the night away to the rhythm of the Caribbean Islands. Organizers anticipated a much larger crowd with many of them arriving later in the evening for the bigger name acts. The on-going Culture in the Night Concert Series, which is held as many as four times a year, celebrates the different cultures and heritages that call Miramar home. The June event was in honor of Caribbean-American Heritage Month which is marked nationwide. “We try
to do something festive to bring the community together,” said Griffin. “We recognize the rich Caribbean heritage of Miramar in not just our residents, but employees as well.” The free family event was supposed to feature a line-up of diverse and locally-based, Caribbean influenced music. There were steel drum bands, Haitian Kompa music, a DJ, and Romantic Reggaeton artist Jay Maly was one of the few artists to make it on stage. Latin singers Randy Y El Chavo and Moksha Roots Allstars, as well as Reggae artist Red Rat were all rained out. Before the rains fell, guests also enjoyed ethnic food and gifts for the kids, who also had a chance to bounce on inflatable rides. “The weather looked bad, but we came hoping to see whatever we could of the show,” said resident Raquel St. Germain. “We have been looking forward to this since we heard about it.” Regardless of the rain-out, City Organizers says it was an important step in celebrating Miramar’s diversity. “We had something for all of the various cultures that make up the Caribbean and make up Miramar,” said Griffin. “It is just a great way to try and get folks out together.”

Innovative Summer Program Helps Kids Stay on the Right Track By Julie Levin
S
everal dozen at risk-teens in Miramar had a rare opportunity
this summer. They had the chance to attend an innovative camp, designed to not only let them have fun, but keep them moving in the right direction as well. Thanks to a $15,000 donation from Sunbeam Properties and the Miramar Park of Commerce, close to 75 students attended the program, which is known as”Hangin’ with 5-0”. It is a six week summer program, for kids ages 11 to 15, who are at-risk and referred by school resource officers and guidance counselors. Through the leadership of Miramar’s Police Athletic League, the students enjoy sports, activities and field trips to places like the movies, bowling, the beach, roller skating, Zoo Miami, Billie Swamp Safari and Kabooms Amusement Center. More importantly, the program helps to form positive relationships between young people and authority figures in the community. “I love the fact that this is a program for teens who may be struggling, or may be on the wrong side of the law or school administration and they get to spend time with police officers. What happens is they no longer see them as the bad guys,” said Maridee Bell, vice president of Sunbeam Properties, developer of the Miramar Park of Commerce. Sunbeam Properties has a unique relationship Maridee Bell of Sunbeam Properties, Miramar Police Sergeant Steve with the 5-0. Four years ago, program was scheduled Croye, Miramar Police Officer Scott Hadley, Miramar Police Sergeant to be shut down due to budget constraints. Looking Kevin Nosowicz, and Andrew for a way to give back to the community during Ansin of Sunbeam Properties
the economic downturn, Sunbeam stepped in and helped save the program.“This is such an important program and fulfills an unmet need in our community,” said Bell. “Our support of the program has become a tradition and we are proud to sponsor a camp that fosters learning and camaraderie, while providing a safe and fun environment for local teens.” City of Miramar Police Officer and Miramar Police Athletic League Executive Director Scott Hadley heads the Hangin’ with 5-0 program. Daniel Charley, 12, Durnal “We thank Sunbeam for their generous donation (L-R) James, 12, and Kenneth Chavez, 15 and continued support of Hangin’ with 5-0,” said Hadley. “Through this summer program, we are able to provide at-risk youth with a fun summer experience that allows them to learn, grow and live up to their fullest potential.” In addition to Hangin’ with 5-0, Sunbeam Properties and the Miramar Park of Commerce support other community activities. They participated in the first Habitat for Humanity Caption 2: (L-R): Trezure Mendez, 12, home build in Miramar and will work on Nanette Govender, 13, Christopher Dacosta, 11, and Leonardo Gajardo, 13 another Habitat home in the city in the next few months. well-known name in
Miramar when it comes to volunteerism, Barbara Brathwaite is now being honored for her community work with a prestigious county-wide honor. Brathwaite is one of ten honorees selected for the Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame. Organized by the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Broward County, the Hall of Fame honors elders who give back to their community. “At first I really didn’t pay much attention because I didn’t realize how broad this organization really is,” admits Brathwaite. “But then after I started getting letters from the different commissioners, I realized it was something really important.” r ves Brathwaite and her fellow nomi- Barbara Brathwaite on the job at one i were inducted into the hall May of Miramar’s Senior Centers ent 9nees during a ceremony in Tamarac. She joins 345 past honorees, all of whom are age 60 and older and who have dedicated
more than five years volunteering their time. Giving back is something Brathwaite has done most of her adult life. “I get a joy out of helping people. I am aging daily and I know that along the way someone else will be doing it for me. So while I have the energy to do it, I like to just help out where ever I can,” said the 67-year old who has lived in Miramar since 1989. Every weekday, you’ll find Brathwaite volunteering at Miramar’s Senior Centers, where she helps with breakfast, lunch, activities like bingo and even helps teach a Spanish class. After a long day there, she’ll often go to help pack food bags at a local food bank. She is also the President of the Senior Advisory Board for the City. “Whatever they need done, I am there for,” said Brathwaite, who has been married to husband Archie for 43 years and has two sons. Brathwaite first began volunteering when she worked for Miami-Dade County, where she worked for the Public Housing and Tax Collectors Department. She would help out at the Gusman Theater for the Performing Arts, at schools and at a prison ministry. “Where ever someone told me they needed help and I had time, I would go,” she recalled. Whenever Brathwaite is not at the Senior Center, you’ll find her at church, where she also helps to care for the elder parishioners. “It is just something I enjoy doing,” she said. In addition to Brathwaite, the other 2012 Senior Hall of Fame Members include: Alan Brass, 62, Plantation, Catharine GeMeiner, 81, Davie, Samuel S. aria Ortega has been singing since she was nine years old.
It is one of her greatest joys in life, and she loves letting her singing bring happiness to others. Recently, her love of singing and community service hit a high note. The Miramar 12-year old was named as a winner of the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, based primarily on her volunteer efforts using her voice. “I was really happy because I know that very few people won. I was glad that I was one of them,” said the rising 7th grader at the St. Bonaventure Catholic School in Davie. Maria was one of 2,200 volunteers nationwide honored through the scholarship program, which recognizes youngsters nationwide who have made a positive impact in their communities through volunteerism. One hundred three of the winners were from Florida and each received a $50 gift card and recognition certificate from Maria Ortega Kohl’s to honor their community service efforts. Maria learned about the scholarship program at school and decided with the help of her teachers that she wanted to apply. In addition to being a “A” student, she is also a member of Blessed John XXIII Catholic Parish Church in Miramar, where she frequently volunteers her time to sing for the elderly, both at churches and other community events. She also sings in Girls Choir of South Florida, as well as her school choir. “It gives me inspiration because it’s not something I was forced to do. It’s something I want to do because I love to do it,” she said. Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 17,000 kids, including the 2012 winners, with nearly $3.5 million in scholarships and prizes. Winners were automatically entered for a chance to receive a $1,000 regional scholarship for post-secondary education. Of those 200 regional winners, 10 national winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships. “Kohl’s is thrilled to recognize more than 2,200 young volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to bettering the communities in which we live,” said Julie Gardner, Kohl’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “Every effort, large or small, makes a difference.” Inspired the recognition from Kohl’s, Maria says she plans on taking her singing talents as far as they will go. She says she feels like she can make a difference in people’s lives. “I want to sing to people in need who want to hear someone’ voice. I want to use my voice to deliver a message,” she said. The atmosphere is so warm and friendly it feels like you are at home,” she said. Vanessa is one of a growing number of moms-to-be turning to the Miami Maternity Center. Caring for mothers and families since 1995, the Miami Maternity Center provides top quality prenatal care, a soothing home-like setting for natural birth and postpartum care for moms and their new baby. “Our slogan is ‘A Better Place to Have Your Baby,” said Carol Williams, midwife and owner of Miami Maternity Center. Vanessa says that was exactly what she and Juan were looking for when they learned she was pregnant with Olivia. They started out seeing an OB/GYN, but quickly grew tired of the 2-hour wait to see the doctor and what they felt was impersonal, assembly-line care. Worse, the doctor they were seeing seemed to be more focused on using an epidural and a delivering the baby through a C-section, not at all what the young couple had in mind. “I felt like they really weren’t respecting my idea for a natural birth plan,” she said. They searched out an alternative and came upon the Miami Maternity Center based upon glowing recommendations from other moms. The staff’s knowledge and care quickly made them feel at home.”I started my prenatal treatment with them at 6 months and loved every single thing about them as a facility, a staff and much more. They helped me with diet, exercise, yoga and any concern I had with the things I was feeling for the very first time in my body,” she said. “The day I gave birth, the staff of midwives welcomed my family and friends with open arms. They treated me like a queen by pampering me with massages, helping me stay calm, coaching me, teaching me to breathe and explaining exactly what’s happening to me and the baby.” Williams says the staff of midwives, midwifery assistants and labor coaches at the Miami Maternity Center work off a simple philosophy; that everything they do is for the comfort, health, and well-being of their mommies and babies. It is a return to the traditional, non-invasive form of birth, where nature is allowed to take its course and the pregnancy and labor develops without intervention. If an indication arises that calls for intervention, only then do they intervene. Otherwise, it is all natural, with no pain medicines, epidurals or need to induce or speed up labor. “Women have been having babies for thousands of years. The body knows what to do,” said Williams. Among the many advantages they offer, moms come to the same place for their prenatal visits as they do for birth. When they come in labor, they’ll see the same staff that has been caring for them over many months, unlike many OB/GYN’s, who use a rotating on-call schedule. The connection becomes so unique, that in many instances, the moms stay in touch for many years. “Our clients become like family members,” said Williams.
24 MTT ALL 0812.indd 24
Moms are given the choice of how they want labor and birth to happen. They are free to walk around during labor and find the position that provides them the most comfort. The same philosophy holds for the delivery. Instead of using drugs, the Miami Maternity Center encourages moms to use natural pain management and relaxation techniques like massage or hydrotherapy. The mom is free to listen to her own body and do what makes her most comfortable. “I had the freedom to walk around, go in the bathtub, massage, meditation, or to eat if I was hungry, really anything that helps you deal with the pain. Those tubs serve as a natural epidural, it’s amazing,” said Vanessa. She said the Miami Maternity Center provided a reassuring and calming base of support all the way through, even helping with any questions she had about Olivia after she went home.” My midwife Carol and her staff have a divine gift for what they do,” she said. “I felt great, healthy and so fulfilled by the beautiful birth I had.” The Miami Maternity Center works with most insurance companies and HMOs. They also accept Medicaid and offer a cash package price of $4,000 that is all inclusive. They offer water births, childbirth and early pregnancy classes, and classes for dads. The Miami Maternity Center is located at 140 NE 119 Street in Miami. To make an appointment, phone them at 1-305754-2229 or visit them online at www. miamimaternitycenter.net.

Short Sale or Foreclosure? By Patrick Simm
A
s the housing market continues its recovery,
many homeowners still find themselves owing more to the bank than their property is actually worth. At the same time, they are experiencing financial hardship and unable to keep current with their mortgage payments. As the delinquent payments continue, they frequently have to make a decision between selling their home on a short sale or facing foreclosure at some point in the near future. So, which is the correct course of action to take? Whether one should do a short sale or let the home go to foreclosure depends on several factors. For many, it is much simpler to admit moral and financial defeat, conceding by just letting the bank take your home. However, that may not be the wisest thing to do. When comparing both options, most experts will often recommend short selling over foreclosure after prudently weighing the pros and cons of both options. They will consider the consequences on credit, future loan availability and taxation. Effect of Credit - It is no secret that a foreclosure has a negative impact on your credit. Generally, one’s credit score will take a hit of anywhere between 100 to 200 points after a foreclosure, with the foreclosure remaining on your credit report for 7 years. Rebuilding your credit after a foreclosure is not totally impossible, but challenging. The effect of a short sale, on the other hand, is not as severe as lenders report short sales differently to credit bureaus. A short sale may be considered to be a derogatory mark on your credit, even though credit bureaus do not show the word “short sale” on your credit report. Often times, it gets reported as “paid in full for less than agreed” or “settled for less.” Normally credit scores drop anywhere from 50 to 100 points as a result of a short sale. Future loan availability - Typically, with certain restrictions, you may be eligible to buy another home in 5 years if the home that was foreclosed upon was your primary residence. Without restrictions, the wait is usually 7 years. If your payments are delinquent and a short sale is granted by your lender, you may qualify to buy another home with a Fannie Mae backed mortgage within 2 years. The penalty/waiting period for an FHA loan is 3 years. Many restrictions may apply to the above circumstances. Taxation - The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 generally allows taxpayers to exclude income from the discharge of debt on their principal residence. Debt reduced through mortgage restructuring, as well as mortgage debt forgiven in connection with a foreclosure, qualifies for the relief. This provision applies to debt forgiven in the calendar years 2007 through 2012. Unfortunately, this provision does not apply to second homes or investment properties and expires at year’s end on December 31, 2012. Homeowners confronted with the above mention alternatives should seek the advice of a real estate attorney and tax advisor.

thing that makes them different. For some teenagers, eyeglasses can often feel that way. Just the thought of wearing glasses can send a teenager running in the other direction. In comparison, a newly published report says that kids and teenagers who wear contact lenses feel a significant enhancement in their appearance. The research results show that starting at the age of eight, children may prefer being offered the choice of contact lenses. The research was recorded in Eye & Contact Lens, which is published by the Contact Lens Association. Just how do contacts enhance an adolescent’s self-esteem? Young adults are selfconscious and they often feel better about themselves when glasses are not the center of their appearance. Contact lenses may help teens feel greater self-esteem and more

comfortable around others by providing them with a less visible option for vision correction. Although teens are frequently fitted with contact lenses, children under 13 are not usually given the option of lenses. Many eye doctors and parents don’t believe that children are mature enough to deal with them properly. With the right instruction, however, children as young as eight years old are very capable of wearing and caring for contacts and they should be offered the option. Generally, before your child purchases contacts, you should consult your optometrist to find out about any potential issues your child might have. Our Miramar optometry practice can help you determine the right prescription for your teen’s contacts. If your child or teenager is in need of vision correction, why not consider contact lenses? Through just a simple soft lens, you can enhance your teen’s self-image. With the large array of contacts on the market, you and your eye care practitioner can work with your child to decide what type of lens is most suitable for their character and lifestyle.

Dance Academy (IDA) as it prepares for yet another spectacular season. The studio certainly raised the bar again last year. Not only did its annual production of The Nutcracker ballet sell-out with over 7,000 people attending the full-scale, professional production, but its summer performance of Cinderella received standing ovations as well. To add to the long list of successes, two IDA advanced students qualified and danced in the World “Olympics” of Ballet – an achievement shared by only 24 girls and six boys worldwide. During this prestigious event, Abbey Kay was the center of attention with ballet companies abroad. However, following an audition on her return home, Abbey chose the Sarasota Ballet Company and will proudly take her first steps as a professional ballerina this month. One of the reasons the International Dance Academy is so successful is its incredible staff led by Artistic Director Deborah Buttner and Co-Director Mary Buttner. These

The exquisite piece of music was composed by her brother, Greg Buttner. “Dancing to my brother’s music with my own amazing students, most of whom I have taught since a very young age, was undoubtedly one of the most special moments of my life!” said Deborah proudly. “Abbey Kay and Alice Schreiber, two graduating students dance as principals, and the corps de ballet are all current pupils of IDA. I could not be more proud of each of them!” Bardo can be viewed on the International Dance Academy website (www.danceIDA.com). Florida’s proven premier Ballet School. In addition to the Directors who are active teachers and choreographers, IDA boasts a highly educated and exceptionally trained international faculty, acknowledged as superior in the area. IDA has proven, through 13 years of service to the community, to be South Florida’s premier ballet school, and offers a complete menu of dance classes for all ages. IDA is simply the best, taking the dancer from class to professional stage with excellent results. Fall classes, which begin on August 20th, are

Deborah is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program who trained in both England and South Africa. As a professional dancer, she toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. As an instructor, she is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods. “I believe that demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students,” explains Deborah, who continues to grace the professional stage with her exceptional talent. For adults, the studio offers classical ballet classes at beginner through intermediate levels; the studio is also home to the daily Jazzercise adult exercise program. New this year, IDA will be offering “Partnering and Repertoire” danced in tutus. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance instruction and certification. RAD is the most highly-regarded educational training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum and must pass a series of examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the RAD in order to be awarded certification. “Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance credentials put our dancers at a great advantage,” states Mary. “Besides the Diploma being an impressive addition to any college application, the dancers also gain the confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met the most rigorous international standards in dance.” International RAD examination and results. A number of students were evaluated this past year by an examiner who traveled from Paris, France, and all scored extraordinary well. Open House Invitation – Come dressed for a fun day of dance on Saturday, August 11th from 1-4pm. The open house will feature free ballet classes, free jazz classes, refreshments, plus a chance to meet the Directors, teachers and staff. The registration fee will be waived for dancers presenting proof of registration elsewhere. Summer Intensive. Young dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can register for IDA’s one-week Summer Intensive Program taking place August 13-18th. According to Deborah, the stretching, strengthening and technique classes will “shake off the cobwebs” and
get dancers ready for the fall classes or to audition for The Nutcracker. Visiting dancers are most welcome! Annual Theatrical Performances. As part of a child’s all-round education and development, the performing company, the International Ballet Company, is established to offer full-length professional performances, rather than recitals or studio shows. “We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that comes with
performing on stage in a spectacular and professional, full-length theater production, before an appreciative audience,” explains Deborah. Two annual theatrical performances are danced before packed audiences giving the dancers the opportunity to showcase their hard work and allowing them to shine in front of family and friends. The Nutcracker will be performed at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts December 14 – 16th. “We welcome auditions by dancers who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional production at a major performing arts theater. We have roles for all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest mouse to the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy,” says Deborah. This will be the studio’s 13th performance of this holiday spectacle and this year’s production promises to be bigger and better than ever. In addition to a cast of over 130 talented dancers, from three years old to professional, the production will feature fabulous costumes, extravagant scenery and spectacular stage effects. It is an unbelievable experience for all young dancers with memories to treasure forever! Auditions to take part in The Nutcracker will be held on September 15th. The International Ballet Academy has no equal! The family-friendly, 5,500 square foot, teaching facility includes three studios, a large foyer, observation windows, sprung floors, all fully air conditioned. It also offers easy and safe drop-off/pick-up at the front door. International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston. Vaccinating Your Puppy
cn of the month pet
“Roxy Marie”
By Christie Waldie-Torres, DVM
I
have recently had a handful of puppies hospitalized
in my clinic for parvovirus. This is a highly contagious disease that causes a lot of abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, sepsis, and many times death. Looking into these puppies’ sad eyes, I cannot help but think that this disease could have been prevented with just a few vaccinations. Parvovirus, along with many other viruses, makes up the core vaccinations that are recommended for puppies. Usually, puppies receive their first series of vaccinations by the time they are 6-8 weeks of age. It is very important to begin the vaccination series at this time, since the immunity they receive from their mother starts to fade. These vaccinations are then boostered every 2-3 weeks until the puppy is around 4 months old. It is important to booster the vaccinations, since the immunity that is passed on from the puppy’s mother can interfere with the vaccination and it is hard to determine the exact time when this interference stops. It is also necessary to booster any vaccination after it has been given for the first time, since a single vaccination only generates a small amount of immunity. The booster vaccine helps to build up the immunity to protective levels. The vaccinations recommended for puppies also include bordetella and distemper virus (among others). Bordetella is part of a respiratory complex that can cause an upper respiratory infection and, in some dogs, pneumonia. Distemper virus, which is also very contagious among non or poorly vaccinated dogs, causes fever, vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from the nose and eyes, tremors, jerking, seizures, sepsis, and many times death. Of course, rabies is also a recommended and required vaccination. It is usually given to puppies for the first time when they are around 16 weeks of age. Rabies is not only fatal to dogs, but is zoonotic and can be transmitted to people. It takes no time at all to develop a strong and loving bond with a new puppy or dog. It is our responsibility to make sure we provide shelter, nourishment, love and protection from anything that can harm the health of our pets. Vaccinations are practically 100% effective at preventing these horrible diseases. Please call your veterinarian to discuss what vaccinations are needed for your pet. ear Miramar Resident:
I would like to take this moment to bring an issue to your attention that has a significant impact on the quality of our lives here in South Florida. It is the issue of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which victims are used for forced labor, domestic servitude or sexual exploitation. I am sure that you have all heard through the media on how this type of activity is unfortunately flourishing in Florida. In fact, Florida has the third highest number of reported sex trafficking cases, behind California and Texas. Florida’s economic climate, largely dependent on agriculture and tourism, renders it an ideal destination for human trafficking victims. Victims of sex trafficking typically wind up in large cities, vacation and tourist spots, where the demand for sex trafficking is incredibly high. A recent report estimated $32 billion a year in profits from the 27 million people victimized worldwide. More street gangs and organized crime are getting involved since they know there is a profit to be made because there is a demand for commercial sex and/or cheap labor. Unfortunately, the supply of victims is often made up of children, boys and girls, between the ages 11 and 13. According to the FBI, many are runaways or throwaway youths who live on the streets and become victims of human trafficking. They have either been abused in their homes or are from families that have abandoned them. Once they become involved, they are often forced to travel far from home and thus are separated from family and friends. The issue is so prevalent that Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Law (TVPL) in 2000 to address this issue both internationally and domestically. With the FBI’s support of TVPL, they have created centers throughout the country to address this issue on the local level. To date, over 900 children have been saved and 500 adults associated with this activity have been convicted. I believe that we can help improve those numbers by being more vigilant and aware of what is going on in our community. You can find a list of indicators, or what to look for,in the FBI Bulletin at http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/ law-enforcement-bulletin/march_2011/human_sex_trafficking. Remember never to approach this on your own and contact our Miramar Police Department immediately. Sincerely, Lori C. Moseley Mayor For information on the City of Miramar, visit www.ci.miramar.fl.us.

legally Speaking
Are You a Victim of Predatory Lending Practices? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
P
redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and
sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrowers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are present in a mortgage transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that loan has revealed serious violations of federal and state lending laws. Property Purchased or Refinanced Between 2003 and 2007. This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without regard for past credit history or current ability to pay, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for up to 115% of the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values. Mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable Rate or “ARM” Feature. These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. Mortgage Loan Suffers From Negative Amortization. Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized. Mortgage Loan is Interest-Only or Pick-a-Payment. Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan, or a minimum payment that does not cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding principal balance. Once the loan payment increases, so does the likelihood that the borrower will default. Mortgage Loan Approval Was Based Only on Stated Income. Many borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker. If two or more of these factors apply to your current loan, you should have a forensic audit of your loan performed to find out whether you have been a victim of predatory lending. If you possess these claims, and they are timely raised against your lender, you may be entitled to actual damages and/or a reduction of the amount you owe on your loan. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” Mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, and you will receive a free copy during your consultation with a member of our legal team.

Mad City Money
What’s the best way to teach teens about money? Recently, the City of Miramar and First Florida Credit Union had them making some hard decisions as they hosted a free, hands-on money management workshop called Mad City Money. The workshop took teens into the future where they had instant families, careers, and bills to pay. They had lots of choices to make, as they moved from station to station to purchase housing, transportation, food, clothing, day care, and other necessities. The simulation also includes: a mall for “wants”; a pushy car salesperson; a commission-based realtor and several other merchants.
Miramar High at the Miami Dolphins Academy 7-7 Tournament Hospital Experience
Memorial Hospital Miramar was the stage for a first-hand hospital experience recently to teach youngsters all about potential career choices. Students from Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School’s FSU campus visited Memorial Hospital Miramar as part of the KAPOW program. The kids went to the pediatric department, lab, X Ray room and more.
