The Season to Say Thanks!
E
very year around this time we take a deep
breath and wonder where the time went. The summer heat is receding, the vacation memories have moved to the back of our minds, and the kids have settled back into their school routine. As the Halloween sugar rush wears off, we now move into full preparation mode for the Thanksgiving holiday. What? Thanksgiving already? In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. While we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a fancy turkey feast, let us give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year and let us enjoy one and other. Happy Thanksgiving!

Building On the Future
F
made up of, what is needed like mass transportation and police and fire services, and what their dream cities would look like. It›s been a great opportunity for cooperative learning,” Panos said. Students were encouraged to imagine themselves in municipal leadership roles like city mayor, planner, architect or concerned resident. Then, they answered a series of questions that included: Where will you live, work, learn and play? Where are the schools, hospitals, fire stations, places of worship and parks? How will you travel? How will you access food? LEGOs that showed happy children, busy workers and abundant community gardens punctuated most of the models. All were created with detail to technology, recyclable energy and conservation. “We will improve the city, not pollute the Earth and live healthier lives,” said Ivanna Fregoso-Frias, 11, a team leader from Dolphin Bay Elementary School. Ivanna’s Miramar 2040 featured flying electric cars and a central energy source made of wind turbines. The winning teams were: First place - Jacklyn Siu,
ifth graders from a dozen Miramar
schools combined education, imagination and competition to build the future - Miramar in 2040 - one carefully placed LEGO brick at a time. Four hundred children in 73 teams converged at Vizcaya Park recreation center on October 10 with hand drawn site plans, an essay describing their vision of tomorrow, and tons of energy. “I did this kind of work in college. Now kids are doing it in fifth grade,” said Harold Zombek, director of Miramar’s Community Development Department who created the competition along with fellow city planner Tekisha Jordan. Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley said the project proves that tomorrow’s Miramar is bright. “Kids talked about protecting the environment, having special-needs accessibility, building mixed-use neighborhoods…We do so many things to educate residents of all ages about what we need to plan for in the future. Major kudos to Miramar schools because Miramar kids get it,” Moseley said. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at Memorial Hospital Miramar was the event’s top sponsor. “It amazes me how much the children participating in this event learned even before the building competition began,” said Milin Espino, the hospital’s director of community relations. Your Dream Community made Miramar the first city in the United States to partner with LEGO for the toy company’s international Lego Build the Change events already happening in Singapore, Denmark, England and Australia. Sifting through nearly 1 million colorful plastic pieces provided by the toy company, the teams found just the right mix of bricks and whimsical blocks to construct entire communities on 12 inch by 12 inch LEGO platforms. Teacher Nancy Panos, of Silver Lakes Elementary School, said the students started planning their dream cities in late August. They began with classroom conversations about necessary community components such as schools, hospitals, grocery stores and farms.“We talked about what cities are

Teams Needed for Miramar Relay for Life By Julie Levin
P
lanning is now actively underway for Miramar’s Relay for
Life event and organizers are still looking for teams to come and join the annual overnight cancer-fighting effort. To get things rolling, The City of Miramar and the American Cancer Society held its first “Relay for Life” kick-off party at the Miramar Cultural Arts Park Center/Artspark Banquet Hall October 23. Working off the theme of “Bewitching Cancer,” organizers hoped at least 20 teams from local schools, businesses, clubs, churches and synagogues would sign on. “It’s never too late to sign up,” said Bruce Klasner, the Event Chairman. “We always encourage people to try to organize teams, because we are the largest fundraising branch of the American Cancer Society.”
The Miramar Relay will be held June 14-15 at the Ansin Sports Complex. The honorary chairperson will be Miramar Mayor Lori Mosely. “We are trying to show that this is an important event for the city and the community because it affects everybody. It crosses gender, nationality, race, religion as well as economic conditions,” said Klasner. The Miramar Relay will have somewhat of a different look this year, as it will be the first time in several years that the Relay has not been held in coordination with students at Everglades High School. The school is planning a separate Relay, comprised primarily of students for later in the year. Relay for Life got its start In 1985 when a Tacoma, Washington physician named Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society. A year later, 340 supporters joined him in the effort and it has grown ever since. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in the overnight community fundraising walk, which encourages teams of people to camp out around a track. Throughout the night, members of each team take turns walking around the track. Most events are kicked-off with a Survivors Lap, where all cancer survivors take the first lap, celebrating their victory over cancer. There is also a Luminaria Ceremony which honors who have been lost to the disease, or those whose fight continues. The events are family-friendly and include food, entertainment and camaraderie. Klasner says it is never too late to sign up and join in. “The sooner they join up, the more they can get involved,” he said. Depending on their goals, I recommend specific protocols for nutrition that will help that reach those goals,” he said. The program offers two different early morning start times, designed to appeal towards anyone rushing off to work or even stay-at-home moms. “There’s a lot of parents in this area, but no gym that has a lot of programs to offer. This is near a lot of schools, so parents can drop off their kids in the morning and head over,” Larson said.

Miramar Seniors to Enjoy Early Thanksgiving By Julie Levin
T
here will be turkey and all the trimmings, plus entertainment,
when Miramar’s senior citizens get together for an early Thanksgiving celebration this month. The City of Miramar Social Services Department will host its 31st annual Thanksgiving Dinner Nov. 15, and organizers say it is a chance for local seniors to give thanks and share a wonderful meal. “It is a coming together to celebrate all that they are thankful for in their lives,” said Shaun Gayle, Program Manager for the Social Services Department. The special meal will begin at 6 p.m. at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex, located at 6700 Miramar Parkway. While the focus will be on fun, the setting will be formal. Seniors are being asked to dress in their finest attire and they’ll sit down to a beautiful table laid out with linens and china. Then, they will enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal, following by live entertainment and more. “Our seniors tell us they really look forward to this,” said Gayle, who will be attending her first Senior Thanksgiving Dinner after joining the Social Services department earlier this year. Now in its 31st year, the dinner has long been a chance to provide a holiday celebra-
tion for seniors who may live far away from family, no longer have family, or for those who are new to the country and unfamiliar with the American Thanksgiving tradition. It is open to members of both senior centers in the City of Miramar. The Sunset Lakes Senior Center is in West Miramar, 2801 SW 186 Ave., while the senior center in the Multi-Service Complex is in East Miramar, 6700 Miramar Pkwy. Designed for residents who are at least 55, both centers offer a wide array of services such as counseling and support groups, information and referral, health and wellness, and recreational activities . For many, visiting the centers throughout the week gives them a feeling of belonging and friendship. The holiday dinner is a chance to honor that. “It is a time when seniors from both centers come together and celebrate the new relationships that they’ve forged,” said Gayle. The event is sponsored by the Senior Advisory Council and the City of Miramar. Tickets are $18 for members and $20 for non-members and transportation is included in the price. A bus is available to pick up the seniors at their homes. For more information, call 954-889-2700 or visit www.ci.miramar.fl.us.

Miramar Student Travels to Kenya for Enterprising School Project
A
By Julie Levin
t just 15 years old, Mackenzie Bryan is helping to make a last-
ing difference in a school house half a world away. Bryan, a sophomore in the International Baccalaureate program at Miramar High School, traveled to Kenya recently as part of the final leg of a school project required by the I.B. program. The project has to benefit others in some way, so Bryan chose to fundraise, collect and then personally donate school supplies to two schools in the East African country. “I wanted to do something really different and out of the box,” said Bryan.
Mackenzie Bryan, 15, showing students at the Watamu S.D.A Primary School in Kenya one of the computers he donated to the school
Knowing that his family was planning a trip to Kenya, Bryan set to work collecting school supplies for the Watamu S.D.A. Primary School, a small school not far from Kenya’s Indian Ocean Coast. He posted requests for donations on Facebook, garnering donations from as far as away England and Australia. He also posted a collection box in BrandsMart and found a local Girl Scout troop willing to help with a school supply drive. In just over two months, he collected more than $1000, money he used to buy four computers during a stopover in England. When he finally arrived at the schoolhouse in June, the family was greeted with flower leis and singing. “They gave us a tour of the school and I talked to each one of the classes,” he said. He also showed photos of his school in South Florida and said the students asked tons of questions about his life in America. Perhaps the best reaction came when he presented the supplies and computers. “They were astonished that they received so many supplies, especially the computers,” recalls Bryan. Thanks to his donation, the school has now started its own computer studies class, and some of the students stay in touch with Bryan through Facebook. The Bryans also had the opportunity to visit a second small village school, where they donated school supplies and uniforms that friends in England had put together. Now back home, Mackenzie is at work writing about his experiences and putting together a presentation for his project that he will present next year. Bryan, who hopes to turn his love of scuba diving into a career owning a Salvage Company one day, is satisfied with what he was able to accomplish. “I feel like it was a nice thing to do,” he said. www.miramartowntimes.com | To Advertise in Miramar Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | November 2012 MTT ALL 1112.indd 21

Glades Middle School Prepares for Harvest Drive By Julie Levin
T
he students at Glades Middle School in Miramar are once
again getting a hands-on lesson on what it means to give back to their community. Since October, the school has been deep into its preparations to help less fortunate families this holiday season through the 2012 Harvest Drive. Through their efforts, more than 200 families in the South Broward area will receive a week’s worth of groceries later this month, plus a $25 gift card to purchase a turkey and other items for Thanksgiving. Coordinator Jennifer Lostumbo says her students are the ones that make the project work. “I encourage them by creating a culture of giving at our school, making it fun and make it the ‘cool’ thing to do,” said Lostumbo, who teaches 8th grade Gifted/Advanced Language Arts and is also the Peer Counseling Coordinator.

Since October, the school has been collecting donations of various non-perishable food items, Thanksgiving items, toiletries, house supplies and more. Though it is a school-wide project, the primary responsibility falls to the nearly three dozen peer counselors who work on the project every day. Their goal is to coordinate donations from more than 20 areas schools, and present them to families on November 15. The Harvest Drive is a yearlong project that culminates in an event that takes place at several public schools every Thanksgiving. It began at Country Isles Elementary School in Weston more than 20 years ago, but now incorporates fundraising efforts and collections from schools, churches, temples and neighborhoods countywide. Families receive a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of grocery staples, as well as personal and household necessities. Three years ago, Glades Middle became one of 10 distribution sites for Harvest Drive. In their first year, they helped 50 families but that number swelled to 200 the following year. Harvest Drive at Glades Middle School has become a huge community effort, incorporating the efforts of 23 south area schools, administrators, as well as local police and firefighters. This year, they anticipate helping 210 families. Harvest Days at Glades Middle School will get underway November 13 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.in the school gymnasium when participating schools will drop off food collected. On November 14, students will sort and organize the donations. On November 15, they will create a grocery store and then shop for each of the families selected. The families will arrive to pick up the groceries and gift cards later in the day. The family pick-up is a confidential event and no children/teenagers are allowed to attend (must be 21 or older). The school needs teachers, faculty, staff, administration, police officers, PTSA parents, and social workers to support this event. They are always in need of monetary donations. If you can help, email jennifer.lostumbo@browardschools.com or call the school at 754-323-4600.

I obtained my medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine; trained at Yale University in primary care medicine, and at Baylor College of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I was selected as one of the privileged few to train in a fellowship in Laparoscopic surgery at a time when laparoscopy was still not widely used in medicine.
Dr. Weiss routinely performs surgeries with the robot and patients go home the next day.
Do you treat urinary incontinence? We perform careful and complete evaluations. All treatment options are available and are individualized for each patient, usually without the need for surgery. Do you treat PMS? Although the symptoms
are usually common to all women, each person’s suffering is a unique experience to her. We understand how to treat each individual patient.
Are there other physicians in the practice?
There are a total of seven physicians in the practice, including: Simon Weiss, M.D., Lina Echavvaria M.D., Helen Spalding M.D., Heather Christie M.D., Marion Colas-Lacombe M.D., Jose Rivas M.D. and Jesica B. Shienbaum M.D.
What is the main focus of your practice?
Do you help patients with weight loss? I have
Dr. Simon Weiss and his team.
We offer a complete range of services for women, including gynecology, high risk obstetrics, breast pap tests, pelvic reconstructive surgery, endometriosis and much more. We manage complex cases as routinely as simple ones.
What can patients expect when they visit the office? They will
find medical care professionals that care about them, as well as stateof-the-art equipment to treat gynecological problems. The physicians and staff take whatever time is needed to solve their problems. Most of the staff has been in the practice for 5 to 10 years. They are committed to each and every one of our patients.
Do you treat chronic pelvic pain? As a member of the International
Pelvic Pain Society, I have the opportunity to exchange ideas with physicians from all of the United States and around the world on a regular basis. Since pain is only perceived by the patient, I have to understand the patient’s pain so well that I can almost feel it myself.
Describe your experience with robotic surgery. It has been 2 1⁄2
years since I introduced robotic surgery to the treatment of pain and the results have been spectacular. I am able to perform a more complete treatment when compared to traditional surgery or laparoscopy. Patients

Do you help patients manage menopause?
We have numerous options to help the most challenging complaints of this condition.
instituted a medical weight loss program with a special team that is trained and ready to help patients in their journey to becoming healthier. They review the patient’s health and medical history and perform comprehensive medical testing to develop an individualized program.
What procedures do you perform in the office? We always strive
to help our patients avoid major surgery. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to perform a wide range of procedures in the office that would otherwise be done in an operating room. Some of these include: essure sterilization; endometrial ablation for bleeding; interstim for urge incontinence; colposcopy for diagnosis of pre-cancer or cancer of the cervix; cryotherapy to treat pre-cancer and other benign conditions; pelvic rehabilitation and biofeedback for rehabilitation of the pelvic floor muscles; urodynamic test and cystoscopy to evaluate a wide range of bladder problems; 4D ultrasounds to clearly visualize in utero babies and more.
What procedures do you perform in the hospital? Some of the pro-
cedures we perform in the hospital include: vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, surgical treatment of fibroids, endometriosis, tumors, incontinence, pelvic pain, infertility, sexual dysfunction and more.

very year, over 3 million school days in the
United States are missed because of conjunctivitis – also known as “pink eye” – according to a recent study. Conjunctivitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the thin, clear membrane that covers the inside of your eyelids and the white part of your eye (the sclera). Pink eye can be caused by viral infections, bacterial infections and allergic reactions. Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis can be quite contagious, and both are easily spread through contact with nose or eye secretions, usually through hand-to-eye contact or poor contact lens care. Pink eye is often spread in school and day care settings. Good hygiene and hand-washing can help prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. If your child is infected, make sure they wash their hands often, avoid touching their eyes and don’t reuse towels. Pillowcases should also be changed frequently. Viral conjunctivitis can last one to two weeks before disappearing on its own. For bacterial conjunctivitis, an eye care physician typically prescribes antibiotic eye drops to treat the infection. Our Miramar office now has a brief test done in-office to determine whether or not your child may have contracted pink eye (known medically as adenoviral conjunctivitis). If caught within the first couple of days, the chance of eliminating the infection is significantly increased with proper treatment. If you feel that your child may have contracted pink eye, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733 so he can properly evaluate their ocular health status and to determine the correct course of action.

Online Home Evaluation Estimates at a Glance
I
“Veer”
By Patrick Simm
dare to say that every homeowner at some point
in time has, for one reason or another, been on a website that gives estimates of a home’s “current” value. Monitoring home value estimates online has become an addiction for today’s internet savvy real estate consumer. Are these estimates accurate? In more cases than not, not at all! However, these estimates can be very useful if you understand the basics of how they are established, how they can be easily skewed, and the proper way to use them. In the past, if you wanted to know what your home was worth, you would have had to consult with a Realtor to do a comparative market analysis or have a formal appraisal performed. Today, we tend to rely on these Home Value websites. They build algorithms that retrieve a description of your home from the county tax records along with other publicly available records of the recent sales prices of similar or comparable homes in your area. They make mathematical changes to create a “rough” estimate of your home’s price based on how similar or different it is in measurable factors, such as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and the size of the property. In addition, some of these websites use a formula that derives a percentage estimate of how the overall local real estate market has moved in the time since the comparables were sold. An automated online estimate of your home falls short and becomes more or less unreliable, because a computer that pulls information from the public records does not have the ability to detect physical, aesthetic, condition and location differences in accordance to each property. The potential for error in these online estimates of home value is why most real estate professionals find them unreliable. The preeminent way to estimate a home’s value is to look at what similar, nearby homes have actually sold for, as close as possible to the time the home’s value is being sought. Appraisers and Realtors do this. Home value estimate websites also attempt to do this, but with a much larger margin of error than human professionals typically have. Because these online home evaluation estimates are not fully trustworthy, I believe they should be used sparingly as a means of arriving at a list price of your home if you are selling. Pricing your home correctly from the onset is imperative to obtaining the most for your property. These estimates are great if you are using them to track movements of the value of your home or the value of homes in a specific neighborhood over a longer period of time. Look Good, Feel Better with Bioidentical Hormone Therapy
photo contest
The World’s Favorite Newspaper™
By Michael F. Augustino, MD, FACOG
S
EX. Everyone is interested or curious when
it comes to this subject material, although we don’t necessarily admit it openly. Even so, Shades Of Grey didn’t fly off the book shelves by itself. Sex and sexuality are important to men and women. As a physician I frequently address patient concerns regarding interest, discomfort, energy, etc. We now see more direct advertisement on television, newspaper and internet. After 2 ½ years of administering bioidentical hormones, I want to bring awareness to everyone that both men and women are having improved sexuality as a result of replenishing a natural level of hormone to the body. Aging is inevitable. Our bodies don’t produce the same level of hormone as we age. Taking care of these changes by bioidentical hormones is not only logical but also natural. How many medication ads on TV list so many side effects that you then are afraid to use the product? This is a treatment that exposes your body to something you have produced naturally. In addition, there are health benefits that go along with this. One of my patient’s asked recently, “How come people don’t know about this?” As physicians we strive to increase knowledge and awareness as we spend time (consultation) with patients to facilitate this. Some examples of common patient complaints can easily be resolved by taking hormones. For instance, “My exercise doesn’t help me lose weight.” Taking bioidentical hormones will raise testosterone levels which in turn facilitates muscle metabolism and reduction of body fat. Or, “My skin is dry. My hair is thinning.” Estrogen will replenish skin and hair better than buying expensive skin creams and hair treatments. Putting back what is missing is far more therapeutic than treating a symptom. The help is here with bioidentical hormones. You need to recognize this and want to receive it. We get older everyday but you don’t have to feel like it. I will close by sharing my personal experience. Bioidentical hormone (testosterone) therapy was very helpful. I noticed that I don’t feel like I need a nap at 2:30 in the afternoon anymore. I enjoy exercise and muscle development is more efficient. Libido is enhanced with physical benefits as well. I encourage everyone to read and understand the benefits of natural bioidentical hormones so you can enjoy the quality of life and health improvements that they provide. Three Major Mistakes by Homeowners When it Comes to Association Dues By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
any homeowners that have fallen behind on their mortgage
payments also make the decision to stop paying their homeowners’ association dues. If a homeowner is trying to save their home, non payment of association dues is perhaps one of the worst decisions they can make. Homeowners can quickly find themselves defending two foreclosure actions, one from the mortgage company and one from the homeowner’s association. The following are three major mistakes by homeowners when it comes to collection of association dues. ▸ Only the mortgage company has the right to foreclose on a home. This is just not true. Florida law permits homeowners’ associations to place a lien against your property for the value of any unpaid dues or assessments, quickly foreclose, and take possession of the property to recover the value of that lien. Generally speaking, there are fewer defenses to an association action than a mortgage foreclosure action. Also, because the amount in controversy is usually less than $15,000, association foreclosure actions may be filed in the lesser backlogged county courts. This means that association foreclosure actions are completed much quicker than mortgage foreclosure cases – usually in less than 6 months. ▸ An association will not foreclose if there is no equity in the property. Just the opposite is the case. Since there is a significant mortgage ahead of the association lien, at a foreclosure auction, the association itself is usually the highest bidder and becomes the new “owner” of the property. More and more homeowners’ associations are foreclosing on South Florida homes in order to take possession of the property and rent it out to recover the unpaid dues, until and when the mortgage company forecloses. Accordingly, an association may foreclose and deprive you of your property if there is equity or not. ▸ There is no need to hire an attorney to defend an association foreclosure action. Like in a mortgage foreclosure action, there are a number of defenses to an association foreclosure action which may only be effectively developed in court by a law firm with experience and specialized knowledge on how to defend association foreclosure actions. An attorney can also help you negotiate a structured settlement of your association debt with affordable payments to avoid foreclosure. There are also bankruptcy related strategies that can be implemented to reduce or wipe out homeowners’ association debt altogether. If you have fallen behind on your association payments, or recently received an association foreclosure action, it is important that you retain a well qualified law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, to fully represent your interests. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to represent dozens of homeowners in our community in association foreclosure and collection actions. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team.

Mayor’s Message
Become a Volunteer In Our Community
PLAY TODAY, WIN IT TODAY!
D
Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley
ear Miramar Residents:
With the national election upon us this month, I am sure you have been listening to everyone speak about which candidate is the best or which party should run our country for the next four years. But at the end of the debates and speeches, we all need to decide who is best capable of running our country. That is why I believe that voting is one of the most vital and important duties we as citizens must perform. It is our vote that decides the course our country will travel in the next four years. But, equally impressive are the volunteers that help make these elections happen. Whether at the polling stations, walking in neighborhoods to remind people to vote, or passing out flyers, armies of people volunteer their time and effort to help. It is this sense of volunteerism that I hope to motivate everyone to do this year. The Broward League of Cities has issued the League’s first-ever Million Hour Volunteer Challenge to the residents of Broward County! The League believes that volunteering strengthens communities, solves problems, and improves lives. While those of us with relatives in high school are aware of their volunteer requirements, we should remind them that volunteering doesn’t end when one graduates from high school and volunteering is no longer obligatory. We must show that volunteering is a lifelong commitment to make the world a better place by being compassionate to those in need and working to make a difference. While many may elect to make monetary donations, which are fine, your presence would be just as equally valuable. I encourage you to get involved today by participating in any volunteer project of your choice. Think of a volunteer project that touches your heart in some way. It could be reading to pre-K children, working in Miramar’s Community Garden, helping out at your child’s school, mowing the lawn of an elderly neighbor, helping out at a homeless shelter, or coaching a Little League team. The point is to decide that you will help make the world a better place by making a difference in the lives of people who need your help. It is my fervent hope that our proud City will be in first place among all cities during this challenge. Miramar is fast becoming a city on the move as a great place to work, play and live. I want it also to be known as a city that works to make a difference in the lives of those in need. The City of Miramar has set a goal of accomplishing 55,000 volunteer hours, and will be leading the charge by partnering with the following organizations; Miramar Optimist Club, the Police Athletic League, and the Moose Lodge to benefit the community through various volunteering activities. In order to keep track of the volunteer hours make sure to log your hours so we can track our progress. You can log your hours at http://www.browardleague.org/volunteerchallenge/. The Million Volunteer Hour Challenge runs until May 31, 2013. Let’s show the County that Miramar can make a difference. All great changes occur when we decide to take action.
