6 Deadly Heart Conditions Knowing the Signs of Heart Disease Can Save Your Life By Mammen P. Zachariah, M.D.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. With the heart, immediate treatment can lessen the damage and having access to a specialized cardiac team is crucial. See a doctor if you have these symptoms:
• Feelings of indigestion or heartburn, any discomfort, pressure, aching, burning, or squeezing or chest pain • Shortness of breath • Palpitations – irregular heartbeats or a “flip-flop” feeling in your chest • An elevated heartbeat • Weakness or dizziness, nausea or sweating
• Pain in the shoulders, arms, neck, throat, jaw or back
If any of the above symptoms last five minutes or longer call 911 immediately.
5 Other Heart Conditions to Watch:
Heart Failure: occurs when the heart isn’t pumping as strongly as it should. Symptoms include shortness of breath and swelling.
Arrhythmia: occurs when the heart beats out of rhythm. If untreated, arrhythmia can lead to stroke, heart failure or cardiac arrest.
Coronary Artery Disease: occurs when not enough oxygen rich blood is delivered to the heart. Symptoms can vary and many experience no symptoms.
Cardiomyopathy: reduces the heart muscle’s ability to pump blood. Symptoms include irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, exhaustion, ankle and legs swelling or fainting.
Heart Valve Disease: occurs when one or more of the valves doesn’t work properly. Symptoms include unusual heartbeat, fatigue, shortness of breath and swelling of the lower extremities.
A multidisciplinary approach in cardiac care is key. For more information, visit BrowardHealth.org/CardiacCare or call 954.759.7500.

Black History is American History
F
ebruary is Black History Month. The annual observance is celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the UK. In the U.S., school students learn about the contributions people of African descent have made to our county, communities, and the world. Many public observances are held across the country, and a renewed focus is made on the continuing struggles African Americans face. Before Black History Month was a nationally recognized observance, “Negro History Week” was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. He chose the second week of February for its observance because that week typically includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to encourage the teaching of Black History in schools. At that time, there was frequently little to no inclusion of the contributions and plight of African Americans in history classes. In the 1970s Negro History Week became Black History Month and is celebrated across the country. It is more important now than ever to remember the severe sacrifices African Americans have made. We must all remember historian George Santayana’s famous quip, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Remembering the worst of our past, as well as, the best, will help us all continue to become better versions of ourselves.

HOOK & REEL CAJUN SEAFOOD & BAR
Cajun Seafood Done Right!
H
By Terry Jaillet
ook & Reel Cajun Seafood & Bar, located just around the corner from the Coral Square Mall in Coral Springs, is the perfect place to get together with friends while feasting on fresh seafood. If you love cracking open a crab leg or pulling the meat out of a freshly boiled lobster tail, there is no better place for a night out!
Backyard Cajun Experience
Eating seafood is only part of the fun. Everything tastes better elbow-to-elbow with friends, swapping stories over music, getting down and dirty, and eating with your hands – all with a cold drink at the ready. Hook & Reel sets out to share the saucy spirit of the boil with folks everywhere – with their own recipes inspired by fiery Cajun home cooking. The Hook & Reel seafood boil dishes up the “reel” deal – the full backyard boil experience and flavor, with a twist. We stopped by to see what people were talking about
and were encouraged to dig into the food using our hands. The dishes are laid on paper, and each table comes with a bucket for the discarded pieces. It felt more like a family crab boil than sitting in a restaurant. We started our meal by sharing a Flounder Basket, which came with a generous amount of fries along with three pieces of perfectly seasoned fried fish. The golden crust covered flaky white delectable flounder fillets underneath. It was a wonderful start to our family dining experience.
Family Dining
Seafood Boils
Like most guests, we were offered disposable gloves and bibs
Hook & Reel offers a variety of fan-favorite seafood boils to choose from. You can build your own boil by selecting from a wide variety of options, or you can choose from one of their Combo Boils like the Reel Catch, which includes snowcrab, shrimp, and a lobster tail or The Perfect Storm Boil, which includes Snow Crab, shrimp, and mussels. All of their boils come with corn on the cob and potatoes. We chose to build our own boil and included some of the restaurant’s favorite items like lobster tail, snow crab, crawfish, and shrimp. We opted for Hook & Reels’ Original Cajun sauce for our meal. Diners get a wide variety of flavorful options, including Garlic Butter, Old Bay Seasoning, Cajun Sauce, and more. The food was melt-in-your-mouth tender, while the flavor from the sauce was tasty but not overwhelming. The shareable service allowed everyone in our party to try several different items, enhancing the experience.
The Bar
The bar at Hook & Reel is a great place to grab a drink with friends or to watch a Dolphins game. Anthony Demarco, the restaurant General Manager and bartenders Mariella and Matt are friendly and welcoming. The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home as we enjoyed a cocktail before our meal.
Conclusion
Hook & Reel Cajun Seafood is a restaurant that focuses squarely on friendliness and flavor. It is a great place to have a flavorful meal with people you like without any bit of pretense. We can not wait to go back! Make sure to call ahead for reservations.

Lundy is a nationally recognized artist best known for her series of large-scale paintings of Muses, which are Greek goddesses of poetic inspiration, featuring strong, intriguing, and captivating women, and more recently for her hyper-colored paintings of animals. Gallery displays a series of animal paintings in the north area and a series of paintings inspired by Muses in the south gate area. The artwork, created exclusively for this exhibit, is layered with nuanced color and texture. Additionally, a three-dimensional element gives it a sense of tactile energy. “Lundy’s exhibition brings a sense of joy and excitement to the space with its bright colors and themes that are accessible to all age groups,” said Phil Dunlap, Director of Broward Cultural Division. “The rotating nature of these exhibits will also provide a dynamic program featuring our local talent, which we hope passengers and employees alike will enjoy for years to come.” “What a great way to ring in the new year with the opening of this wonderful gallery in the newly upgraded Terminal 2,” said Mark Gale, FLL CEO/Director of Aviation. “We hope that these exhibits allow passengers to experience the cultural richness of our community while promoting our local artists by sharing their work with hundreds of thousands of passengers.” Parkland resident, wife, and
mother of three, Lundy paints out of her home studio. She received national recognition when immediately following the Parkland mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, she tried to comfort her 17 grieving neighbors by painting and donating portraits of their loved ones. “Through New Eyes” is a collaborative exhibition presented by FLL and the Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design program.

First US Open Spec Tennis Championship comes to Coral Springs!
Played on a Pickleball Court, Spec Tennis Offers Players an Alternative Racquet Sport That Builds and Improves Tennis Skills
S
pec Tennis players will gather in South Florida in February 2022, for the inaugural US Open Spec Tennis Championship. The first-of-its-kind event will be held from Friday, Feb. 4 to Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at the Country Club of Coral Springs. Men’s, women’s, and co-ed doubles competition, and one co-ed singles division will be contested. One of the nation’s fastest-growing new paddle sports created by Northern California-based tennis pro Nate Gross in 2016, Spec Tennis is more closely aligned to tennis than pickleball. Spec Tennis uses the same strokes and strategies as tennis and is played on a pickleball court. All that is needed is a paddle and orange-dot low-compression tennis ball. Spec Tennis is a true bridge sport to tennis as experienced players and beginners can grow their tennis games by playing Spec Tennis.
“It’s an amazing sport and the popularity has exploded here in South Florida,” said Ricardo Marcotulli, organizer of the 2022 US Open Spec Tennis Championship who works closely with co-organizer Anthony Allen. “Regardless of players’ level, spec tennis lends itself to frequent spectacular points. The reasons for the amazing points’ abundance are the shorter court dimensions, the lighter ball, and the less powerful racquet. And if you think it is fun to watch, it is even more fun to play, and men and women have great matches against each other.” Another factor that adds to the excitement is the “No-ad, No tie-break” scoring system. For instance, a match could come down to just one point. That is, when the score is at 3-games all and deuce, both opponents have match points. Whoever wins the next point, wins the match. “We have a co-ed singles division and a non-gender-based draw,” Marcotulli
continued. “One of the reasons men and women can compete against each other within a level playing field offered by Spec Tennis is that the underhand serve (only one serve per point) is not an advantage for the serving player.” Spec Tennis is easy to learn, even for someone who has never picked up a tennis racquet. The smaller Spec Tennis paddle and low-compression balls are easy to control. That makes for longer rallies for beginners, which increases enjoyment. “The paddle is less powerful than a tennis racquet, yet a similar weight,” Gross said “This promotes better biomechanics, forcing players to turn their shoulders and use their legs in order to generate power. Spec Tennis helps players develop control. Any new shot or tactic you want to learn in tennis can be learned first in the more favorable environment that Spec creates, and then directly translated to tennis.”

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Will Mark the Fourth Anniversary of Tragedy With “A Day of Service and Love”
O
n Friday, February 14, 2022, on the four-year anniversary of the 17 lives lost and those injured on February 14, 2018, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSD) will host its fourth annual “A Day of Service and Love.” Staff and students are invited to participate in a number of service-oriented activities throughout the morning.
“A Day of Service and Love” was created in 2019 by a committee of students, teachers and other contributors as a way to honor the victims of the Feb. 14 tragedy. Students and employees will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m. on Feb. 14, which is a non-academic day for students and staff. “February 14th will be a non-academic day. This day will be a Day of Service and Love in honor of our 17 Fallen Eagles and those that were injured,” MSD Principal Michelle Kefford said. For the fourth anniversary, MSD has organized numerous community service projects to partake in. The projects include maintaining Marjory’s Garden and improving the campus with campus beautification. Other options consist of “Feeding Our First Responders” breakfast where students and staff serve breakfast to the local first responders and a Mindful Morning with the MSD Mind-Body Ambassador Club. Students can also choose not to attend school as an excused absence. The school day will begin at its regular 7:40 a.m. start time, but students will be dismissed early at 11 a.m. At 10:17 a.m., all Broward County Public Schools will observe a moment of silent reflection in honor of the 17 lives lost and those that were injured on Feb. 14, 2018. The 1200 building on MSD’s campus, where the tragedy took place, is expected to be torn down this summer, following the conclusion of the shooter’s trial. Jury selection for the penalty phase is expected to begin in February. 22 / February 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

Python Elimination Program Accepting New Participants
N
on-native Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in South Florida and are one of the most concerning invasive species in Everglades National Park. Pythons compete with native wildlife for food, which includes mammals, birds, and other reptiles.
The Burmese python is now distributed across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, including all of Everglades National Park and areas to the north including Big Cypress National Preserve and Collier-Seminole State Forest. A number of Burmese pythons have been found in the Florida Keys, but there is not yet confirmation of a breeding population in the Keys. The South Florida Water Management District Governing Board is taking aggressive action to protect the Everglades and eliminate invasive pythons from across the landscape. Starting in March 2017, the Python Elimination Program incentivizes a limited number of public-spirited individuals to humanely euthanize these destructive snakes which have become an invasive apex predator in the Everglades. The program provides access to python removal agents on designated lands in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Palm Beach counties. The program is now accepting applications for new python removal

at-home dental care, with period▸ Regular, ic veterinary dental cleanings, is the best way to prevent periodontal disease and keep your dog’s mouth healthy.
What Causes Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver.
What Are the Signs of Periodontal Disease?
The signs of periodontal disease include:

How Is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed?
Your veterinarian can see signs of gingivitis and tartar buildup by examining your dog’s mouth. However, since most periodontal disease occurs beneath the gum line, the only way to truly assess your dog’s mouth is to perform an examination while your pet is under anesthesia. Your veterinarian can use a dental probe to measure any loss of attachment around each tooth and take dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess for bone loss, abscesses, and other problems.
polishing, can help reverse the problem. Your veterinarian may also recommend a dental sealant that helps prevent tartar from accumulating on teeth. If there has been a loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, however, this cannot be reversed. Your veterinarian may need to apply antibiotics beneath the gums and perform dental procedures, which may include tooth extraction. Ask your veterinarian which dental diets or treats are best for your pet. After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian may also recommend a plaque prevention gel that adheres to the teeth surfaces to inhibit tartar. Ask your veterinarian what dental hygiene methods are recommended for your dog, and don’t forget to keep scheduled appointments for follow-up dental checkups.

UPDATE N
By State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky o matter how much time passes, February 14, the day of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will always be a day that profoundly impacts our community. While most people in other parts of the country have moved on, we continue to work to move forward, all while respectfully acknowledging the incredible loss, pain, and trauma that affected so many in our community. We will never forget the 17 whose lives were taken that day – Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Biegel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang. Each one of these people left behind grieving family members and friends. For those who lost loved ones, every day is difficult, and February 14th will be especially so. In addition to those that were taken, we also acknowledge and remember the 17 people who were physically injured on February 14 and the hundreds more who were traumatized. Everyone who lived in our community that day was somehow affected, and many of the emotions from that day may resurface as we near the fourth-year mark. Support continues to be available at Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center located at 5655 Coral Ridge Drive in Coral Springs. You can contact them at 954-618-0350 or through their website at www.eagleshaven.org.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
PARKLAND UPDATE By Mayor Rich Walker
T
his month marks the four-year anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when 17 wonderful souls were murdered, 17 more were physically injured, and countless have been mentally changed forever. We must never forget the 17 we lost as their lives were ended much too soon. Each victim had their own story and tremendous potential. So many of the families of the victims continue to honor their memories by working hard in so many areas positively helping others with scholarships, mental wellness, and changes to laws that will forever help keep others safe. There, however, continues to be much work to do. We can help the families continue to make positive changes by ensuring those who are not working together are held accountable. Whether it is criticism on social media, obstruction to common sense

gun safety, or a lack of cooperation, these individuals need to be held accountable. We are in this together and we can only make our world a better and safer place by working together. It amazes me how simple dialogue has become so divisive. The mentality of ‘you are either with me or against me’ needs to stop. We all come from different places, we all have different backgrounds, and we offer different perspectives. That is a profoundly positive foundation from which to work—different perspectives are precisely what makes any great idea. It takes true cooperation and the willingness to accept others’ ideas and perspectives to achieve greatness. I spoke last month about “our children are always listening.” We need to continue to set the tone in showing our children how important it is to accept people and their ideas. We do not need to agree, but it is important to listen and look for common ground. There
is always an opportunity to work together. On February 14th of this year, as we have for the past three years, our community will come together at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park to remember and honor those 17 souls we lost. There isn’t a community I know of that comes together better than Parkland. Surely we can work together. If you would like to share your thoughts about community, caring, and coming together, or perhaps share your experiences, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure you stay informed on events and helpful information.
