October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

L

ast year more than 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 died, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (ABCF). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. It accounts for about ¼ of all cancers in women and 12 percent of all new cancer cases across all sexes. In the United States, there will be about 280,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed. Despite massive progress in diagnosis and treatment, about 15% of those diagnosed will eventually succumb to the disease. But, there is hope. Over the past 45 years, the five-year survival rate has significantly increased for breast cancer patients. In fact, people with localized disease at the time of diagnosis now have a 99% five-year survival rate, while the survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer, that has spread beyond her breast, is just 28%. Early detection is perhaps the most important thing. The ABCF recommends women should regularly conduct self-examinations beginning in their 20s and receive annual mammograms beginning in their 40s. There are many new promising therapies being tested and developed. More important than a new miracle drug, however, is identifying a lump or change in your body. And, if you do detect something, seek medical help. It could make all the difference.

Mayor Appointed to

Florida League of Mayors’ Board of Directors

M

ayor Scott Brook has been appointed to the Florida League of Mayors’ Board of Directors for a two-year term. The board is comprised of more than 50 mayors who represent municipalities throughout the State of Florida. The appointment was made during the Florida League of Cities annual conference held in Orlando, August 12-14, 2021. “The Florida League of Mayors is a nonpartisan organization, and appointment to the Board of Directors provides me with a platform to advocate before the Florida Legislature to speak about issues affecting the City of Coral Springs and its residents, said Mayor Scott Brook. “Additionally, serving on the board allows me to better connect with other Florida mayors to share new ideas and best practices.” Mayor Scott Brook served as a Coral Springs City Commissioner from 2002-2006

and was elected as the city’s Mayor from 2006 to 2010. During his term as Mayor, the City of Coral Springs became the first city in the USA to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He is the founder of the Coral Springs CustomerInvolved Government Committee, a member of the Board of City’s Charter School, co-founder of Premier Networking Alliance and Project Leadership and the founder of the Mental Wellness Networking Alliance and Veterans Network Alliance. The Florida League of Mayors provides the mayors of Florida with the ability to explore, in great depth, areas of mutual concern and opportunity. It reflects current public opinion which shows that mayors are widely viewed as the key political leaders in their community and enjoy a high level of public confidence. The organization is staffed by the Florida League of Cities.

South Florida Reaches Out

to Support Victims of Hurricane IDA

A

s Hurricane Ida picked up speed and intensity it became clear that coastal communities along Lousiana’s gulf coast were again going to face the worst. Residents put up storm shutters, boarded up windows, and purchased supplies. They cautiously watched digital tracking maps and made plans for possible evacuations. We were reminded, yet again, how important a Hurricane Kit is for families living in the tropics. Fortunately for us, the storm stayed to the west. Our neighbors along the gulf coast and in the northeast, of course, were not as fortunate. Hurricane Ida will likely be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in US history. The storm came ashore as a category 4 storm with winds up to 150mph. The powerful storm dumped record rains all the way to New York City, with significant flooding all along its path. The South Florida community, local char-

itable organizations, and local businesses stepped into action immediately following the storm. In fact, even before the storm left the islands, South Floridians were organizing supplies, raising funds, and dreaming up logistics plans. Several large donation drives raised money and supplies for impacted communities. Initial estimates project the cost of the storm’s damage at $95 billion or more. Much of that in Northeastern states hit by torrential rains, putting the storm into a league with other deadly cyclones that have crippled the region in recent years, according to analysts. Broward County Public Schools Launches

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dashboard By Terry Jaillet

B

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) launched a webbased dashboard to give parents up-to-date information on the number of within their school community who have tested positive for COVID-19. The dashboard, which is updated daily, can be broken down by students and faculty and is sortable by school.

The data are reported based on the day the positive test is reported to the school. Confirmed cases are as reported to the school system’s Risk Management and Coordinated Student Health Services, based on the date tested as reported to the District. Parents are cautioned that there could be delays in the reporting.

BCPS created the dashboard to give as much transparency as possible to families with children in school. The district reopened with mask mandates at all schools. The school board has been in a public battle with Governor Ron Desantis over the board’s decision to require masks. According to the New Your Times’ Coronavirus Case Count, Broward County has seen an increasing number of new cases since June. The county as a whole is currently averaging more than 2,000 new cases a day, which is the highest level of new cases since the epidemic began. The Broward County Commission has also created several dashboards to help residents get up-to-date information. These include a map showing the percent of residents who are vaccinated and a report on hospital utilization.

Coral Springs Firefighters Turn Into Chefs

to Support Cancer Awareness

J

oin the Coral Springs Fire Department as they host a Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner on Saturday, October 30th from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Station 80, located at 2825 Coral Springs Drive, North of Royal Palm Blvd., Coral Springs, Florida 33065. The event is open to the public and for a $8 donation attendees receive a generous portion of pasta, homemade firehouse sauces, salad, meatballs, Italian sausage, bread, a beverage and dessert. All food is made and served by firefighters, including our Fire Chief Michael McNally. Participants are treated to a tour of the firehouse, will learn about fire rescue equipment, meet firefighters and purchase t-shirts for the benefit. Kids will receive a firefighter helmet too. Donations once again will benefit the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. The mission of the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund is to provide funding for breast care to women in the local community who are financially unable to obtain screening mammograms

and advanced high quality breast imaging and biopsies. Sadly, Lisa lost her battle with the disease earlier this year. Proceeds will also benefit the American Cancer Society and the Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. The Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association assists in raising funds and providing awareness for local charitable events that offer a direct benefit to the people, person or organization in need. The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) adopted wearing pink during October for Breast Cancer Awareness for a number of years. What grew from that is support for more than just breast cancer, their efforts focus on all forms of cancer, according to Lynne Martzall, Public Information Officer for the City of Coral Springs. “To raise funds, the IAFF Coral SpringsParkland Fire Department members began hosting a yearly Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner at Station 80 nine years ago. Each

year the dinner has grown and residents look forward to seeing their favorite firefighters while raising money for a good cause,” said Martzall. The local firefighters are in support of bringing awareness to cancer and those affected. The local Department has been personally impacted by cancer. “Members of the Department were deeply impacted by cancer when they lost their close friend and fellow firefighter Paul Pietrafesa, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2016; he was just 48 years old,” said Martzall. The Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner continues to grow each year. “Each year members look to increase the amount of dinners served with a goal of 1,500! So come out and support your local firefighters and community in their fight against cancer!” added Martzall.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Avoid a Scary Halloween with these Safety Tips By Sheriff Gregory Tony

T

reats, ghouls and spine-chilling fun are just a few reasons why Halloween is one of the most anticipated times of year for kids. Unfortunately, Halloween can also be the most dangerous time of year for children. Nearly 4,000 Halloween-related injuries occur every year, including falling accidents, poisoning, burns and motor accidents. Although the festivities can be fun, we want to remind you of these important safety tips to help prevent real horrors from occurring.

Costume Safety

Your child’s costume should allow them to walk easily. If the costume involves a mask, ensure they take it off when crossing the street so the mask does not obstruct their vision.

Have something reflective, such as a glow stick or reflective tape, attached to their costume.

interfest is pleased to announce that internationally renowned 3-D Pop Artist, Charles Fazzino, has been selected as the official artist of the 50th Anniversary of Winterfest, “50 Years of Hard Rockin’ Fun ... Winterfest 2021.” The unveiling will take place during the “Winterfest White Hot Launch Party” on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021. Fazzino will unveil the poster at Wentworth Gallery at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood on Thursday, Nov. 18. The public is invited to the opening and will have the opportunity to mingle with celebrities such as Miami Dolphins player Emmanuel Ogbah. “Winterfest has been one of my favorite events for decades,” said Fazzino. I used to spend my winters in Florida at all the art festivals and watched Winterfest as it was just getting started. I am honored to once again be painting the official poster for the 50th anniversary, and I hope that my work accurately captures the spectacle and the celebration.” Parade producers will create some fun glimpses of the poster artwork around Fort Lauderdale and on social media. UPDATE

By State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky

T

his coming month I am looking forward to some cooler weather and getting ready for the upcoming holiday season. While the summer has ended, please be mindful that hurricane season continues through November 30, so make sure you are not clearing the hurricane supplies out of your home yet. On October 7 at 7:00pm, I will be hosting a virtual Town Hall Talk on Human Trafficking with speaker Erin Collins, Executive Director of Florida Alliance to End Human Trafficking. Many families and communities are not aware of the risks they face regarding human trafficking. It takes place in all communities, even gated ones. Please join us for this very important meeting by registering in advance at tinyurl.com/D96Trafficking. You may be surprised by what you learn. I hope you will join us on October 7 for this important Town Hall Talk. In the meantime to learn more about the signs of human trafficking, please visit floridaallianceendht.com. Additionally, there is a free training available at floridaallianceendht. com/training that focuses on detecting human trafficking, best practices for reporting human trafficking, and the interventions and treatment for survivors of human trafficking. The training is one hour and you will receive a certificate of completion when finished. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and a good time for all women who have not done so in the past year to make an appointment for a mammogram. Due to COVID, many people unfortunately have neglected to get their annual exams. Early detection can save your life so I encourage all of you to be proactive with your screenings. Eligible women can receive free breast and cervical cancer screenings at various locations in Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties through the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (FBCCEDP). For information or to schedule an appointment please call 954-762-3649. This month I will also be in Tallahassee for committee weeks during which we hear bills in committee and discuss legislative priorities before the general session, which begins in January. Our committee weeks this month are the weeks of October 11-15 and October 18-22. You can view our daily agendas for these weeks at myfloridahouse.gov and watch the committee meetings at thefloridachannel.org. I will be giving updates in my e-newsletter as well as on social media. Please always feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. Also, I would love to hear what your priorities are for our legislative session and would appreciate it if you would consider taking this brief Pre-Session Survey https://tinyurl.com/District96 to share your priorities with me. Additionally, look out for my updates on Facebook and Twitter at @RepHunschofsky as well as my regular e-newsletter that you can sign up for by emailing HDIST096@myfloridahouse.gov with “subscribe” in the subject line. As always, my team and I are here to help so please reach out to us at 954-956-5600 or at HDIST096@ myfloridahouse.gov. We look forward to hearing from you!

PARKLAND UPDATE By Vice Mayor Bob Mayersohn

I

n most places of the country, October is the month when you can embrace the change of seasons. In those areas the leaves change color, the weather gets cooler, and the days get shorter. In South Florida we hope that the temperature subsides, we pray that any potential hurricane winds will dissipate off the coast, and maybe we’ll embrace that fall ambience by decorating our homes, in part, with the fallen pinecones at the Six Acre Wood Park. October is also the month that has seen our community unite around various causes, including Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These community events not only create awareness, but additionally raise funds to support the cause. The challenges of COVID-19, however, have reshaped these events. Groups such as Not My Daughter Find a Cure Now will be pivoting back to their October 25th Telethon and the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department has canceled its annual pasta dinner for the second consecutive year. Other awareness events include Firefighter Prevention week, which is October 4-8th. “Learn

the Sounds of Fire Safety” is this year’s campaign. The goal is to educate everyone on how to react when hearing those chirping or beeping alarms. The City of Parkland will also be celebrating National Walk/Bike to School Day on October 6th at Heron Heights, Riverglades, and Park Trails Elementary Schools and Westglades Middle School. Family participation is a great way to encourage physical activity and review safe pathways to school. Yet, what resonates with me in October is inspired by my son Garrett, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, it is the acknowledgment of Disability Awareness Month. From the City of Parkland’s perspective, we embrace the values of diversity and recognize the differences in abilities as we seek to build a more inclusive community. This is evident by our efforts to achieve the designation as an Autism Friendly City. Through my personal lens, as a 26-year disability advocate, it is about incorporating disability awareness into the larger conversation. It is about unpacking social injustice, prevalent stereotypes, equal opportunities for employment, and access to quality education. Although there
