Remembering Our Veterans
A
ugust 30, 2021, marked the official end of the war in Afghanistan. The 20-year combat operation, along with the war in Iraq, left us with the most combat Veterans since the Vietnam war. In fact, there are about 75,000 Veterans living in Broward County, according to the US Census Bureau. The fact that these men and women volunteered to put themselves in harm’s way makes them worthy of our respect regardless of political ideology or whether or not you supported these wars. Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to thank the Veterans among us, or at the very least think of the contributions these men and women have made to our society. Unfortunately, for some of our Veterans, the wounds of war don’t show up until after they return home. The suicide rate among Veterans is almost twice that of non-veteran adults, with the gap growing over the past 15 years. It is clear that the horrors of war never go away for some. If you know a veteran, especially someone who has served in combat, take time to reach out to them on November 11th. Let them know that you care about them and value that they are part of your life. While the ghosts of their past can perhaps never be silenced, your friendship could be the light that keeps them going.

On Veterans Day, we honor and remember every man and woman who has served in the United States Armed Forces to serve and protect our nation, defend the Constitution, and the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. Originally observed as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I when fighting ceased on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The holiday evolved to be a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good of our nation.

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

’ACQUA Nail Spa was one of the first salons in South Florida to offer disposable pedicure basin liners, nail files, buffers, and foot pumice stones. Additionally, to ensure there is no cross-contamination, they use a medical autoclave to sterilize their implements. Sterilization and cleanliness, among the numerous services available, are what set the premier nail spa apart from others in the area. Clients adore their wide selection of unique pedicures such as the signature “Jelly Pedi”. The relaxing treatment moisturizes the skin and soothes dry, achy feet. It has aloe and fragrant oils to effectively reduce sweating and odor. R
unners and walkers of all ages hit the pavement on the morning of Sunday, October 17th at Parkland’s Pine Trails Park for the latest edition of the Parkland Dash road race. The annual 5K & 5-mile road race is a favorite for local runners of all levels. The proceeds from this year’s race are being used to help support Parkland Buddy Sports. Parkland Buddy Sports provides
quality sports programming for special needs children and young adults in an empowering, challenging, and loving environment where the emphasis is on having fun, making friends, and realizing your potential. Their volunteers, both students, and adults learn patience, tolerance, and the ability of one person to change the life of another. They also learn that by creating an environment void of physical, social, and cultural barriers there are “NO LIMITS”. This year’s 5-mile race was won by Adam Littke at 31:00, followed by the fastest woman, and second overall finishers Julie Esposito in 32:15. Joel Zaila of Lakeland was the fastest runner in the 5K, finishing with a time of 18:29. The fastest woman in the 5K was Katherine Jovanovic from Boca Raton, finishing in 20:28. The event, which is sponsored by the City of Parkland, also featured a One-mile run/walk that was open to runners of all ages.

City of Parkland Farmers Market is HERE By Jon Duka
A
rea residents can look forward to another season of fresh produce and baked goods at the Parkland Farmers’ Markets. The City of Parkland Farmers Market will return on Sunday, November 7th from 9:00 am till 1:00 pm at the Parkland Equestrian Center. The dog-friendly outdoor market is a popular hit among residents and will be open every other Sunday through April. The market has once again expanded its produce offerings and will feature over 60 vendors selling fresh baked goods, organic breads, seafood, cheeses, sauces, spreads, sweet treats, and much more. The Parkland Farmers’ Market began in 2006. In addition to the regular Farmers Market, there will be craft fairs on November 21, December 5, and December 19. Visitors will be able to purchase items such as fresh and organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, beautiful flowers, breads, pastries, and other baked goods. They also feature a variety of gourmet
foods such as jam, honey, dips, sauces, fresh pasta, cheese, and pickles. The market is dog friendly so don’t forget to visit the pet vendors! During the November and December Farmer’s Markets, they will feature vendors selling holiday related items. “The mission of the Parkland Farmers’ Market is to contribute to making our City a healthy community. To do this, we provide a community gathering that offers a wide assortment of conventional and organic fruits as well as an abundance of gourmet food items. The market offers spices, coffees, teas, sauces, and dog treats. Much of which is made and can be enjoyed on site. We also feature specialty market days such as craft fairs, health and wellness fairs, and pet day,” said Todd DeAngelis, Chief Communications Officer for the City of Parkland. This continued growth reflects the desire for the community to engage in
local food producers to purchase fresh produce and food products directly from our local vendors. It also allows an opportunity to bring our community together, interact, meet neighbors, and have fun in the great outdoors of South Florida,” added DeAngelis.

ocal schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in partnership with more than 170 Broward County public schools and many area private schools will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. 500 of the families are
also given the opportunity to “shop for free” at Harvest Drive November Boutiques. The recipient families select gently worn clothing and shoes, gently used books and household items for their entire family. With generous donations, Harvest Drive is now able to also provide a selection of new toys. Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods and grocery gift
cards. Collections began during mid October and will conlcude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distribution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving. The mission of the Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their community in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other necessities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. COMMUNITY NEWS
Light Up the Night
T
Winter Wonderland Holiday Party is Back
he annual “Light Up the Night” Charity Holiday Party will once again bring the community together in a warm, wonderful “feel good” evening hosted by local law firm Zimmerman and Frachtman, PA. The event is scheduled for 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm on Thursday, December 2 at the law firm’s offices at the corner of Hillsborough Boulevard and Highway 441. Proceeds from this year’s party will benefit The Anthony Rizzo Cancer Foundation and In Jacob’s Shoes. “While it broke our collective hearts to have COVID preempt this beloved community event in 2020,” said party host Bob Zimmerman, “we just knew we had to bring it back in 2021. Once we started asking the community, people really needed and really wanted this event to return. It’s part of their psyche, part of the fiber of this community, and if we did it responsibly, changed some things around --people could still enjoy all the things that make this event so loved, so encompassing and so warm, and not let COVID win.”
The evening of camaraderie, friendship, and fun will include a synchronized light show, live music, loca DJs spinning seasonal tunes, along with an appearance by Santa Claus! The event takes place outside within a few minutes drive of all of Parkland and is free to the public. Each year local restaurants, caterers, bakeries & others donate food & fare for the party. To ensure the highest levels of safety, participants have agreed to hand out gift cards and coupons to visit their eateries after the event and are providing completely wrapped items to guests. Everyone can still enjoy all the fun “freebies” this event is known for without the worry. The Holiday Shopping Village will be bigger than ever at this year’s event. Even more community businesses will showcase their wares and add to the festiveness. As you walk into this year’s event you will be given a goody bag which will include masks and hand sanitizer (while supplies last) so you can protect yourself and fill it up with tons of other goodies given away by
participating businesses and vendors. You will also receive a “HOLIDAY PASSPORT” that once stamped and deposited in the Zimmerman and Frachtman booth enters you for a drawing to win a large screen TV. While the event is free to enjoy, the party’s other purpose is to spread awareness & raise funds for the Anthony Rizzo Cancer Foundation (Rizzo44.com) and In Jacob’s Shoes, which provides gently used & new shoes, school supplies & athletic gear to local families in need.

ASK THE SHERIFF
SUPPORTING OUR HEROIC VETERANS
D
eputy Aaron Moore had not yet completed the police academy when he deployed to Iraq in 2003. As an enlisted member of the United States Army National Guard, Deputy Moore prepared for war, but he encountered something different. He spent much of his time on foot patrol in Ramadi, a city in Central Iraq, interacting with Iraqi citizens and ensuring their safety. He saw that many were in need, and he did what he could to give them aid, even if that just meant listening. He ultimately spent 18 months in the Middle East. When Deputy Moore returned to the United States, he finished the academy and became a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy. He realized his experience in Iraq helped him achieve greater empathy and enabled him to recognize the residents in his own community who needed help. He did his best to uplift and aid homeless veterans in his zone and found ways to provide shoes, book bags and other essentials to kids who needed them. When the opportunity arose to join the BSO Homeless Outreach Team, he immediately

accepted. He is now an essential part of our Neighborhood Support Team. Most recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped our agency distribute more than 300,000 boxes of groceries and 2,500 hot meals to those significantly impacted. Deputy Moore is just one example of the sacrifice, patriotism and bravery of our military veterans and the value they offer to our community long after their tours of duty end. Hundreds of BSO employees are veterans of our armed forces, and many still serve. BSO works tirelessly to support the veterans in our communities. Two recent examples are in mid-September, we learned a U.S. Navy veteran, who had recently found housing after living on the streets and in shelters, needed furniture for his apartment. Our BSO Homeless Outreach Team used their community connections to find an organization willing to help provide gently used living room and dining room furniture, as well as other household items. In addition, a team of BSO deputies acted as movers to transport the items from the donor to the veteran, bringing comfort and stability to a veteran in need.
We assisted a former Marine earlier this year who served two tours in Iraq and experienced some of the most dramatic and challenging fighting of the war. As a result, he has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and traumatic brain injuries, leaving him permanently disabled. BSO, along with community partners, worked on a home remodel for the veteran and his wife. Central to the BSO ethos is the concept of service. It is what drives each of us to be better public servants and first responders. No group embodies this concept more than our military veterans. This Veterans Day, and every day, we honor the brave men and women who served to protect our freedoms and way of life. We also celebrate the efforts of those who wear the uniform and continue to serve. Service Equals Reward

his Veteran’s Day we will come together to honor our veterans for their service to our great nation. While the men and women in our Armed Forces all came from different backgrounds and life experiences, they united around the love and devotion to our country and their willingness to serve and put themselves in harm’s way to defend the freedom of others. Supporting these courageous men and women in word and deed should not end on Veteran’s Day. I am proud to have co-sponsored several bills last legislative session that support our veterans and their families. HB 231 established a Florida Veterans Care Coordination program that provides behavioral health care referral and care coordination services for veterans and their families. HB 429 established the Purple Star Campuses Program to help schools respond to the educational challenges that military children face during this transition to a new school and to help keep them on track during this transition period. HB 435, Veterans Employment and Training, educates businesses and business associations on the SkillBridge program and matches transition service members with training opportunities offered by participating businesses. To all who served in our Armed Forces, we thank you today and every day for your service, patriotism, and sacrifice to protect our way of life here at home. November is a month that we not only give thanks to our military heroes but where we give thanks for all we have. For many, missing loved ones makes this time of year difficult and for others, who have faced financial hardship, providing food for Thanksgiving dinner may be a challenge. Recognizing those in need, my office has teamed up with the Harvest Drive to host a food drive. We will be collecting various non-refrigerated food items (such as stuffing, boxed mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and vegetables, pasta, rice, soup, pancake mix, mac and cheese, cereal, powdered milk, etc.) outside my Coconut Creek office on 4800 West Copans Road in Coconut Creek from 11/1-11/14, Monday through Thursday from 8am to 6pm. My office team, my family and I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and hope you are surrounded by loved ones. THE CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION
THE TRUE ESSENCE OF EATING ITALIAN PIZZA
CORAL SPRINGS COMMISION NOVEMBER MESSAGE
I
t is hard to believe the holiday season is almost upon us! As we head into November, it’s important to reflect on how far we have come as a city and nation since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Thanksgiving holiday fast approaching, we focus our attention on gratitude and appreciation. We are truly thankful and honored to serve the residents and businesses of this incredible city. Our commitment to ensuring Coral Springs remains the premier city in which to live, work and raise a family requires us to make difficult decisions – ones that are made with the city’s long-term future and success as our guide. We are excited to announce curbside recycling for single-family and low-density homes in Coral Springs has resumed! When the global market for recycling dramatically declined, our city was faced with an overage of nearly $300,000 in fees to continue recycling due to contamination. This decision was made with the intent to resume recycling once the market for recycled materials improved. Our continued commitment to making recycling available and affordable is contingent upon our residents ensuring that they ‘Recycle Right.’ As you celebrate Thanksgiving gatherings and future holidays events, dispose of clean recyclables in the blue cart. This includes plastics #1 & 2, broken down cardboard, metal and aluminum cans, mixed paper, and glass. Learn more by visiting, www.coralsprings. org/recycle. The Coral Springs Police Department, in partnership with SafeGuard Document Destruction, are hosting their popular Shred-aThon event for city residents at the Sportsplex (2575 Sportsplex Drive) on November 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This is a great way to discard information-sensitive documents to prevent identity theft. For more information, visit www.coralsprings.org/events. Get into the fall spirit with the city’s popular Bites-N-Sips event series. On Friday, November 5 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. enjoy the “Flavors of Fall” with harvest-inspired treats from local food trucks and vendors. Adult beverages will also be available for purchase. Parking is free at the City Hall garage. For more information, visit www.CoralSprings.org/bitesnsips To honor of our military heroes, their sacrifices and service, on November 11 the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, in partnership with the City of Coral Springs, will honor the men and women of the armed forces with a special Veterans Day Ceremony. The event starts at 10:45 a.m. at Veterans Park located at 8601 Royal Palm Boulevard. As our ongoing commitment to honoring veterans for their service and sacrifice, we launched the Hometown Heroes Banner program. If you would like to recognize a resident who served, or currently serves, in our nation’s armed forces, visit www.coralsprings. org/heroes. Our November Commission Meetings will take place virtually on Wednesday, the 3rd and 17th at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are aired on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99.
