Green Thumb GardeninG Think Shade Trees This Summer!

S

trategically placed shade trees can add tremendous value to your outdoor living spaces, especially during the hot summer. Not only does it feel up to 20 degrees cooler in the shade than in the direct sun, but the shade environment creates terrific opportunities for under plantings of colorful foliage plants that cannot tolerate full sun. Additionally, trees provide a natural habitat for birds and squirrels and produce oxygen to help cleanse the air we breathe. Economically, properly selected trees can begin to reduce your home cooling costs within a few years and a fully grown tree canopy can reduce cooling costs by up to 40%.

Cassia. Two varieties to choose from, both with bright yellow flowers. In bloom much of the year.

Bottlebrush. Distinctive light bark. Flowers are 6” long cylinders of scarlet blossoms.

LARGe tReeS (40 Feet AnD BeyOnD) Royal Poinciana/Jacaranda. Light canopy

withstands high winds and allows grass to grow underneath. Spectacular flowering in the spring and sporadically throughout the year. Live or Laurel Oak. Stately historical tree that adds beauty and grace to any landscape. Very dense canopy. Bulnesia. Tropical glossy leaves with a complex buttercup flower. Very fast grower. Gumbo Limbo. Distinctive reddish exfoliating bark. Interesting branching has lots of character. All of these trees are available at Flamingo Road Nursery, and other local nurseries. A wellrooted 8 foot specimen should run $150-$200 in a 25 gallon pot and installation is approximately $100. For $250 - $300, you would be hard pressed to find a better long-term investment that also provides instant gratification during these dog days of summer!

“Jiaqi’s intelligence astounds me. I watched him take the exam and he made this test look easy, which it is not.” — Lisa Herron, Cypress Bay Math Teacher and Mu Alpha Theta sponsor June at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The three-week math intensive program included lessons on various math topics and writing mathematical proofs, lectures and daily practice exams. For many students, this would not have been the ideal way to spend their summer. But, for Jiaqi, it was a dream come true. “I enjoy math probably because there is only one answer in arithmetic, and math presents a logical way of representing the world,” he explains. Jiaqi is lucky, math comes easily to him. He just completed his sophomore year and has already taken geometry, algebra 1, pre-calculus, and statistics. He will take calculus this upcoming school year. In addition to his classes, Jiaqi is also a member of Cypress Bay’s Mu Alpha Theta math club. “I enjoy math competitions because of the thrill of the race, the people I meet there, and the fun that can be had when we’re not doing math.”

He dedicated extra time to math studies, while preparing for the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad. “My teachers encouraged me to do well and taught me everything I needed to know. We learned more than just the standard benchmark in class and there were weekly practices,” says Jiaqi. Bank On Yourself for a Retirement Plan You Can Predict and Count On By Pamela Yellen, author of Bank On Yourself: The Life-Changing Secret to Growing and Protecting Your Financial Future

The idea of having a comfortable, worry-free retirement has become a distant dream for many boomers – even for those who did Pamela Yellen, President, “all the right things”that Wall Street and the Bank On Yourself financial gurus told them to do. It’s become increasingly clear that conventional financial and retirement planning methods aren’t working. The government is proposing ways to increase Americans’ retirement security. Unfortunately, however, this will simply herd more Americans into a retirement system that most experts agree is broken. Is there a way to have financial security and grow a sizable nest egg safely and predictably – even when stocks, real estate and other investments tumble? The answer is a resounding “yes,” although you probably won’t hear about it from your financial advisor or stock broker. I’ve researched over 450 savings and investing products and strategies over the past two decades, as a consultant to financial advisors. I ultimately concluded that Americans have been brainwashed into believing we must risk our money in order to grow it.

The Difference Between Saving and Investing… Wall Street and the financial planning industry have led us to believe that “saving” and “investing” are the same things. However, they are not. The money you have in “savings” is

money you don’t want to lose. Money you “invest” is subject to loss. Most people today “invest to save,” and as a result, have no idea what their nest egg will be worth when they hope or plan to tap into it. This is not a financial “plan,” which the Merriam Webster dictionary defines as “a means of accomplishing something.” It’s gambling. And it has led to a nation of boomers wondering if they’ll ever be able to retire, and what they’ll have to give up in order to do that. But there are proven and time-tested ways to grow a substantial nest egg – without the risk or volatility of stocks, mutual funds, real estate, and other investments. For example, there is an asset class that has increased in value during every stock market decline and every period of economic boom and bust for more than a century. That asset is dividend-paying whole life insurance. A dividend-paying whole life policy grows by a guaranteed and pre-set amount every year. In addition, the growth is exponential, meaning it gets better (more efficient) every single year you have the policy, simply because you stick with it. And no luck, skill, or guesswork is required to make that happen. You can see proof of this on my blog, at www.bankonyourself. com. Furthermore, there are little-known options that can be added to the policy which turbo-charge the growth of your equity (“cash value”) in the policy. These policies are known as Bank On Yourself-type policies. Once credited to your policy, both your guaranteed annual increase, plus any dividends you may receive, are locked in.

They don’t vanish due to a market correction. These policies also give you peace of mind for retirement planning, because you can know the minimum guaranteed income you can take in retirement, and for how long you can take it. You control the money in your policy, not the government. You can use the money to “bank on yourself” and become your own source of financing, so you can reduce or even eliminate the control banks and financial institutions have over you. In addition, it’s possible to take retirement income from these policies with little or no tax consequences, under current tax law. During the financial crisis, even as the experts lamented there was no place to hide, no one lost a penny in a dividendpaying whole life policy, and their policies continue to grow safely and predictably every year. There are a many myths and much misinformation about this powerful financial tool, and no shortage of experts who will tell you to avoid whole life policies. That’s why I created the $100,000 Challenge. It lets you test your knowledge of the facts about dividend-paying whole life. And a $100,000 cash reward awaits the first person who has a different product or strategy that can match or beat a properly structured dividend-paying whole life policy. By STAcey BomSer

S

agemont Sports Camp scores with boys and girls looking for summer fun. From baseball to badminton, campers can get in the game at weekly sportscentered camps. Each week the camp focuses on one or two specific sports, teaching campers the skills and techniques to play these games. Campers can choose which weeks they want to attend depending upon which sports interest them. Choices range from more mainstream sports such as soccer, basketball and flag football, to lesser known activities such as badminton, ultimate frisbee or lacrosse. Sports Camp Coordinator Gina Florio, who has been running the program for the past five years, says campers learn much more than just the rules of the game. They develop confidence, courage, leadership, teamwork and perseverance. “Seeing a child develop confidence is one of my greatest joys,” shares Coach Florio. “Watching a child throw a football correctly for the first time, officiate an activity, make a great flag pull to save the game, or score their first goal ever. All these life-changing moments can be experienced through sports. Especially in the uncomfortable or disappointing moments, this is where the true character can be developed.” Sagemont Sports Camp is open to boys and girls entering second through eighth grades. Monty’s Roaring Junior Sports Camp is for second through fifth graders, while Monty’s Roaring Senior Sports Camp is for middle school students. Campers do not need to be athletic or have any mastery in a particular sport, just

the willingness to learn and have fun. “We create a healthy competitive atmosphere by initiating game situations to bring out all the campers’ strengths as well as understand and recognize weaknesses,” explains Coach Florio, noting that campers will be taught by experienced coaches in each of the various sports. In addition to the learning the sport(s) of the week, camp activities include playing capture the flag, dodge ball, swimming, Iron Man Competition, color war and much more. A variety of sports-related field trips are also planned. Depending upon the week’s theme, campers could attend a Marlins game, go bowling, kayaking, fishing, play paint ball, or other exciting adventures. Coach Florio says regardless of the activity, the focus will always be on fun and fitness. “As a parent of two boys, I experienced firsthand the importance of healthy physical activity in a child’s life and the positive impact it can produce. Our focus is on the overall individual child’s development, physically, socially and character.”

Lacrosse is just one of the many sports campers will learn at Sagemont Sports Camp.

communiTy newS Weston Philharmonic Society Promotes music Appreciation to All Ages

By STAcey BomSer

T

he Weston Philharmonic Society does much more than simply present worldclass musicians in concert. It also promotes music appreciation to all ages. “In addition to presenting symphony orchestras, we support and promote a variety of musical genres including jazz and pops concerts and even classical guitar,” says Judi Robaina, who is starting her second term as President of the Weston Philharmonic Society. This year, she says the organization’s primary focus will be on the youth of Weston. “In light of the budget cuts and schools eliminating arts and music programs, we would like to fill that gap and bring more music into the schools.” Robaina says the Weston Philharmonic Society plans to expand its “In Schools Music Program” this year, which last year reached an estimated 10,000 students in the Weston public schools. “A key component of our mission is to enhance the exposure of our children to fine music,” says Robaina.

Members of the Weston Philharmonic Society Joy Rodenberg (left), Elena Artidiello-Santiago, newly installed treasurer, and Mona Bentz, past president.

Paul Koenig (left), Dr. Joseph Pomerantz, Event Chair Rochelle Koenig, Louie Robaina, and Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese share a moment at the Weston Philharmonic Society’s Installation of Officers and Board of Directors.

Through its “In Schools Music Program”, the Society has offered mini operas to elementary school students and a “Meet the Musicians” program for older students. By bringing professional musicians into the classroom, students are introduced to various instruments and musical styles. “Many professional musicians say they were inspired by something they saw or heard as a child,” says Robaina. “Who knows, perhaps tomorrow’s famous musician is being inspired by one of our presentations.” The Society further supports the Weston schools by donating musical instruments, music and other equipment, as well as awarding scholarships to high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in music. 2010 Cypress Bay High School graduates Alec Shulman, who will be attending Northwestern University to study the saxophone, and Andrea Villalba, who will be attending Florida State University to study the flute, were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship. In addition, the Society awarded a scholarship to Lisandro Crouzzeiles. Although not a musician, Robaina says his volunteer work has been invaluable to the Society. “He created and maintained our website over the past year. We will miss him when he attends Florida Gulf Coast University this fall.” These scholarships were presented at the Society’s annual Installation of Officers and Board of Directors. Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, artistic director/conductor of the Symphony of the Americas, was the installing officer. The new officers for the 2010-2011 season include: Judi Robaina, President; Gene Harvey and Roger Lander, Co-Vice Presidents Ways and Means; Hal Hammel, Vice President Public Relations; Monique Pepper, Vice President Membership; Rochelle Koenig and Pauline MacRae, Co-Secretaries; Elena Artidiello-Santiago, Treasurer, and Monique Graham, Vice President Education. The event was also an opportunity to announce some of the upcoming concerts. The SummerFest Concert featuring the Mont Blanc Symphony Chamber Orchestra is scheduled for Monday, July 26th at 8pm at Temple Dor Dorim. These French musicians will be accompanied by members of the Symphony of the Americas under

the direction of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. “SummerFest is always one of the most anticipated events of the year,” shares Robaina. “We are very fortunate to have Weston as one of the stops on the national tour by these world-class musicians.” On February 19, 2011, the Weston Philharmonic Society will present a concert by the New Philharmonic, a 50-piece orchestra. They will be playing Beethoven’s Seventh and several numbers by Grieg with a piano solo. On April 9, 2011, the Symphony of the Americas will return with a new “From Opera to Broadway” concert. “This was our most popular and successful concert of the year. We had more than 500 people attend,” boasts Robaina. “We are looking forward to bringing it back with new songs and new vocalists.” Both of these concerts will take place at the Cypress Bay High School auditorium.

Dr. Joseph Pomerantz, former president of the Weston Philharmonic Society (left), Judi Robaina, current president, Ester Brewda, operatic vocalist, and Rochelle Koenig, former president and current co-secretary pose for a picture.

Robaina says the concerts and other events are made possible through support from the City of Weston and Weston Philharmonic Society sponsors, including Title Sponsor Mercedes Benz of Pembroke Pines. “You don’t have to be a big sponsor to support the Weston Philharmonic Society. You can support the arts in our community by becoming a member,” states Robaina. Annual membership is $40 for individuals and $65 for families. To learn more about how you can support the Weston Philharmonic Society visit www.westonphilharmonic.com. Membership information and a schedule of events are available online.

communiTy newS construction Underway on Bonaventure Blvd. roundabouts

By STAcey BomSer

I

f you’ve driven north on Bonaventure Boulevard lately, you may have noticed construction. The City of Weston is installing a traffic roundabout at the intersection of Bonaventure Boulevard and Blatt Boulevard. The project should be completed by November. A second roundabout is planned for the intersection of Bonaventure Boulevard and Saddle Club Road. A date has not been set for that project. Currently, both intersections have four-way stops and are not approved by Broward County for traffic signals. Neither intersection has generated enough volume to require a traffic light. In lieu of waiting for possible future approval from the County, the City of Weston has decided to construct a roundabout at each location. Basically, a roundabout is a circular intersection at which traffic is slowed down and enters a one-way stream around a center island. Roundabouts are designed to process high traffic volumes at lower speeds resulting in lower accident rates than traditional four-way intersections. In addition to being safer and improving traffic flow, the roundabouts will be much more aesthetically pleasing. Each will feature enhanced landscaping in the median and center island. The landscaping cost is being supplemented by a $30,186.94 donation from the Homeowners Association of Bonaventure. The remainder of the project is funded by the City’s Capital Projects Fund. The City is in the process of obtaining final approval for a $133,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation to help defray costs. The intersections will remain open during construction, with intermittent lane closures. Motorists should use caution when approaching. Up-to-date information on the lane closures is posted on the City of Weston website at www.westonfl.org under the Happening Now section of the homepage.

The entire family was recently awarded the 2010 “Guardian Angel” Award and honored at the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Broward Mother’s Day Luncheon. Each year, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Broward County celebrates better health for mothers and babies, while recognizing the achievements of individuals who have made a difference in the life of Broward’s next generation. In addition, Jennifer was the recipient of the 2010 American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science’s “Women of Vision” award. And Jennifer could not receive a more appropriately-named award, as the family foundation comes closer to fulfilling its vision and purchasing its first GE Giraffe incubator. “To pay it forward and be able to help countless other families bring home a healthy baby will make all the agony we went through okay.” Martin Fajardo of GE shows students at David Posnack Hebrew Day School how the GE Giraffe incubator works. The school raised funds to benefit The Sydney & Alexandria Cohen Foundation, which plans to purchase two incubators for Memorial Hospital West.

happy Summer from lucille’s American café!

T

ired of grilling hamburgers, hot dogs, and steaks? Try grilling fresh seafood, seasonal vegetables, or even grilled fruit for dessert. This month we give you a few unique grilling ideas for the summer.

Grilled Glazed Salmon ▸ ¼ cup Dijon mustard ▸ ¼ cup prepared horseradish, drained ▸ 2 tablespoons honey ▸ 4 salmon fillets (6 oz each) ▸ Vegetable oil, for rubbing ▸ Salt & fresh ground pepper Mix mustard, horseradish and honey in a small bowl. Rub the salmon fillets with oil and lightly salt and pepper. Grill over medium heat, skin side down, until lightly brown (about 3 minutes). Turn and grill the other side for 3 more minutes. Turn once again, glaze with mustard mixture, grill for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. Serve with the additional mustard glaze. Lucille’s recommends serving this salmon dish with wild rice, and for dessert:

Grilled Nectarines ▸ 1 pound ripe nectarines, cut into medium dice ▸ 3 tablespoons sugar ▸ ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon Combine all ingredients together in a small bowl. Use four 12 inch square pieces of heavy duty aluminum foil. Spoon ¼ tablespoon of butter in the center of each square of foil. Pour ¼ of the fruit into the center of each piece of foil. Bring two sides of the foil up over the fruit to form a seam across the top. Fold the other two sides to seal the foil pack completely. Grill over medium heat for 10 minutes. Carefully pour the fruit into four bowls. Garnish with your choice of yogurt, ice cream or whipped cream. Summer picnic tip: Keep any mayonnaise based salads on ice during the hot summer days. Lucille’s American Café is Weston’s neighborhood café. Located at 2250 Weston Road in the Waterway Shoppes of Weston, you will find homemade classics and comforting favorites. communiTy newS The “Green” initiative Grows in Weston

By STAcey BomSer

T

he “green” initiative has taken root in Weston. Recycling is not the only way we’re going “green,” residents, businesses and even the City itself are all exploring energy-saving options. The Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Conference Center and Spa was recently awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR for superior energy efficiency. It is one of about three dozen businesses in Broward to earn this prestigious recognition. “Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs,” states Fred Euler, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure. Simply by replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs throughout the 23-acre resort property, the hotel was able to reduce energy costs by more than $30,000. The City of Weston realized a 25% reduction in lighting energy consumption after it replaced older technology fluorescent lighting fixtures with energy efficient fixtures in all city buildings except City Hall, which was built with energy efficient lighting. In addition, city officials are now exploring potential additional savings by installing LED bulbs in the 1,300 city-owned street lights. That change would provide energy savings of 50-70%. The City is using a $594,600 Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant to help fund this project. Lighting was just one of the “green” changes that earned the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure its ENERGY STAR rating. The hotel has also implemented state-approved recycling, water conservation and energy management programs. Other environmentally-friendly initiatives include donating unused toiletries to local charities instead of disposing of them and providing free valet service to guests with hybrid cars. Hybrid delivery vehicles are just one of many energyefficient, earth-friendly practices by Pizza Fusion. The Weston restaurant has the distinguished honor of being the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified restaurant in Florida, and the world’s first LEED certified pizzeria. The Weston Pizza Fusion features a number of ecoefficient products, techniques and designs. For example, it utilizes Energy Star appliances and low voltage lighting to reduce its energy consumption. To save on air conditioning, extra insulation made from recycled blue jeans was added. The restaurant also strives to be earth-friendly by using nonVOC paints and furniture made from reclaimed wood. Of course there’s more to being “green” than just energyefficiency. Pizza Fusion has the distinguished honor of being the first certified organic restaurant chain. Its gourmet pizzas, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and organic beers and wines are all untainted by artificial additives such as pesticides, preservatives, antibiotics and hormones. The Hyatt Regency Bonaventure boasts its own organic herb garden providing fresh ingredients to the hotel restaurants. In addition, the resort has created a sustainable seafood menu, exclusively serving guideline-approved seafood.

Levinson is also endorsed by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Broward County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish, and State Representatives Martin Kiar and Franklin Sands. But, she acknowledges that on Election Day it is the support of people like Patty De Biase that will make the difference. The Weston mother and third grade teacher at Indian Trace Elementary School attended a recent rally for Levinson. “As a teacher I am supporting her because finally we will have proper representation. Her focus will be the classroom and learning. As a taxpayer I am happy that she is a businesswoman and will be able to analyze the budget and get rid of waste. Finally, as a mom I trust her since she has been active in the schools and has her own three kids in Broward County Public Schools.” Although if elected this would be Levinson’s Broward County School Board candidate Laurie Rich Levinson (center) has three children enrolled in Weston public schools. She has been involved with the School Advisory process, serving on the SAC and SAF, and just completed two years as the Central Area Advisory Chair and three years on the District Advisory Council. She was also on the Gifted Advisory Council. If elected, Levinson says she plans to get the focus back on children and education. “Our children need a strong, well-rounded curriculum that preserves electives, and is differentiated to meet their needs. A one size fits all cookie cutter approach does not engage our students. Teachers must be able to teach in innovative, creative ways, instead of teaching to the FCAT.” She would like to see more public/private partnerships relating to curriculum to benefit students. “I think these partnerships are becoming increasingly more important with the weak way the State funds education in Florida,” explains Levinson. “Recently I have been working with the Weston Arts Council and Weston Philharmonic Society, forming partnerships at both middle schools and high schools that Weston residents attend.” Broward County School Board candidate Laurie Rich Levinson (center) poses with supporters Rosie Levinson says in addition to fresh ideas, she will bring extensive business Koznitsky (left) and Patty De Biase (right) at a recent campaign rally in Weston.

cover STory you’ll Flip for new changes coming to TAG USA Gymnastics

A

s a child, Marissa Zoldan was an original TAG athlete and Elite gymnast. Now, as owner of TAG USA Gymnastics, she is helping to develop three and four years olds into the next generation of Elite gymnasts. Marissa is well on her way, as this year, the gym has developed National Qualifiers, Regional Champs, and State Champs within the girls and boys gymnastics and trampoline teams. That’s quite an accomplishment, especially considering Marissa and her husband Michael have only owned the gym for about a year and a half. In that short time, the Weston couple has totally revamped its gymnastics program, coaching staff, and reputation. But, their biggest changes are coming over the next few months and they promise that people will flip over it. Q: This has been a banner year for the gym. Can you share some of your achievements? A: Our accomplishments this past year have given us state and national recognition, that perhaps, no other local gym has experienced. We boast a tOPs national team Qualifier for girls gymnastics, a Regional and State Champ in boys gymnastics, and a Regional Champ and national All Star in boys trampoline. in 2009, the girls compulsory gymnastics team had 5 all around State Champs, 15 individual event State Champs, and 93 first place trophies in their six competitions. Also, the coed trampoline team has six athletes competing in the national Championships in June. Q: That’s quite impressive. To what do you credit these accomplishments? A: these are huge accomplishments for a gym of this size and only being in business for one-and-ahalf years. it speaks volumes for the hard work and dedication of our gymnasts and our coaching staff. Q: How do you get such skilled coaches? A: tAG USA is already considered to have the best recreational program and girls compulsory team in South Florida. Our ultimate goal is to create the only true high level Optional and elite program in Broward. Michael and i travel and actively recruit top national coaches from successful programs throughout the country. We desire coaches that have a true history of developing top gymnasts. Many local coaches have a habit of jumping from one gym to another every year or so. Most gyms will then recycle coaches, most of whom have no true successful credentials. Q: Is there really a difference in gymnastics programs in other parts of the country? A: Absolutely! Coaches from gyms in Ohio and texas develop multiple champions at the national and international levels. that type of coaching success is not found among Broward gyms. in evaluating a coach, a parent can ask or research the past accomplishments of these coaches. top coaches will have trained national team and international competitive athletes, as well as developing multiple college athletes. in our

travels out of state, we have met owners from these top gyms, along with their renowned coaches, while

learning about these high level models of training, it is those types of gymnastic programs that we have already established at tAG USA and it is those types of coaches who we continuously recruit from around the country to come to tAG USA. Q: What are the upcoming new changes planned at TAG USA? A: First, we are pleased to announce our move to a brand new state-of-the-art facility in Weston. the new gym is triple in size and will accommodate our amazing growth and expanded programs. Second, we are expanding our cheerleading team to a full size, multi-level, competitive travel team. the third major addition will be our Athletic training Center for middle and high school athletes. Our program will have professional coaches from football, track, baseball, soccer, and basketball train young athletes with performance enhancing conditioning programs in their own section of the new gym. Q: What can people expect to see at the new gym? A: Most important is the 100 convenient spaces for parking! the gym itself is built from the floor up where every inch of space is designed to create the ultimate beginner to elite gym. each of our programs will have separate sections of use. there is a large separate area for our Mommy & Me and Preschool classes with added special sized equipment. the parents will love the easy parking, optimum view seating area, and the

toddler open play area. the boys gymnastics team, trampoline team, and beginner gymnastics classes will each have separate training areas from the girls gymnastics team. Also, we are adding a rod floor, three vault runways, and a spring floor runway for all tumbling athletes. Q: Will you be adding anything else? A: the new facility will have a large open bonded foam floor for martial arts and tumbling classes and a full-sized dance studio. We are also excited about the Athletic training Center for middle and high school athletes. Q: With so many classes and kids at the gym, will there be space for parents? A: the parent will love the parking area with two separate entrances for their convenience. We will have a spacious quiet lobby for parents who want to read, converse, or wifi. the open interior viewing area runs 100 feet in length so parents can watch their child train and see how they interact with other children and coaches. As parents with a lot of kids, Michael and i know what is important to a parent and took it all into consideration when designing our new gym. Q: TAG USA has an amazing reputation for hosting the best birthday parties and open gyms. Will you still offer them in the new gym? A: Absolutely! Our new gym will have three large and comfortable party rooms and even more activities for the kids. the added trampolines, bounce houses, rock wall, and game room just adds to our already action-packed parties. Q: All of this sounds like a huge undertaking. What made you and Michael take on this enormous project? A: When we bought tAG USA, we committed ourselves to offer the best gymnastics experience possible at every level. We don’t follow other gym’s ideals, rather, we have our own goals of success and will continue to progress until we get the expected results. it is our customer satisfaction, commitment to our athletes, and our continuous improvements that voted tAG USA as Best of Weston! TAG USA Gymnastics offers recreational classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions. For more advanced students, there is a competitive gymnastics team and a trampoline and tumbling squad. In addition, TAG USA offers a summer camp for children of all ages and skill levels. Campers enjoy arts and crafts, races, obstacle courses and a color war, in addition to learning gymnastics and tumbling. The TAG USA summer camp runs through August 20th. For more information on any of these programs call (954) 3849393 or visit www.TagGymnastics.com. TAG USA Gymnastics is currently located at 15851 SW 41st Street, Suite 100, next to Home Depot.

healTh & wellneSS Test your Knowledge of Spinal care By Dr. BroWner & Dr. BehAr

True or False:

1. “Spinal structure cannot be changed, and is of no concern anyway, because function is what’s important.”

FALSE: Chiropractic and other scientific research has demonstrated that certain aspects of spinal structure can be changed, and can be improved non-surgically. For example, controlled clinical trials published in major scientific journals demonstrate an average improvement in cervical lordosis (the normal spinal curvature of the neck) of 13 to 18 degrees using chiropractic procedures versus no statistically significant change in control groups. Function is vitally important to spinal health, yet function is dependent upon structure. Joints, muscles and ligaments will only function correctly if structural alignment is normal. When the spine is not aligned correctly, or posture is abnormal, all components of the spinal column and tissues associated with it - joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves - are forced to work in ways that are mechanically deficient and functionally detrimental. the result is chronic or recurring pain, degenerative changes in joints and other tissues, and deterioration of many aspects of health. Since optimum spinal structure is so critical to restoring and maintaining health, chiropractic care emphasizes objective, measurable structural improvement as a key component of spinal rehabilitation. Chiropractic doctors call this corrective care. Chiropractic corrective care involves various methods of spinal analysis to accurately assess spinal positioning, as well as specific spinal adjustments, rehabilitative exercise and other spinal “remolding” procedures to gradually improve

spinal alignment.

2. The best way to do sit-ups is to lie on your back with your feet secured. FALSE: Doing sit-ups with feet or ankles secured forces the powerful hip flexor muscles to do most of the work the abdominal muscles should be doing. Since this exercise fails to isolate the abdominals, it is not particularly effective at developing abdominal muscle strength. Also, when the hip flexors get fatigued from the exercise they may tighten up, resulting in a back that is more susceptible to injury. your chiropractor can show you safer and more effective methods of strengthening your abdominal and “core” muscles.

This is the wrong way to do sit-ups.

here may be a number of reasons for persistent hip pain. When the pain interferes with day-to-day functioning, and limits a person’s ability to walk normally, sit comfortably or perform daily activities, it’s time to seek medical advice. In some cases, pain can be resolved with conservative treatments such as ice, physical therapy, rest, activity modification, pain relievers or injections. In other cases, surgery becomes necessary. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s, Orthopaedic Surgeon Preetesh Patel, MD, specializes in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and says it is important to evaluate each patient to determine a treatment approach that is best for him or her. “We perform a thorough evaluation of the patient through a medical history, physical examination, x-rays and other imaging to evaluate the cause of hip pain, Dr. Patel said. “After a thorough examination, if the patient is a candidate for hip replacement surgery, we ensure that he or she fully understands what to expect before, during and after the procedure.

Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement

Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of few facilities offering patients a minimally invasive hip replacement surgery called “direct anterior. This approach enables the surgeon to insert the hip prosthesis through a small incision at the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or back where the surgeon has to cut through muscles and tendons.

Faster Recovery

Due to smaller incisions and less muscle trauma, patients recover faster with the direct anterior approach than with traditional hip replacement surgery. In some instances patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities in as little as two weeks. Patients also endure a much shorter hospital stay and report less pain, which reduces the need for pain medication. The use of assistive devices such as canes and walkers is also substantially reduced. In contrast, the average recovery time with traditional hip replacement surgery is two to six months, making the direct anterior hip replacement surgery an appealing alternative.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is the key to recovering mobility and can begin the first day after surgery. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a rehabilitation program with techniques that facilitate patients’ recovery. After physical therapy, patients can usually return to recreational pastimes such as cycling, golf, skiing, tennis and horseback riding. The risk of dislocation is also less using the direct anterior technique. Patients are not required to follow strict precautions as are necessary following other traditional surgical methods. For an appointment with Dr. Preetesh Patel, please call 1-877-463-2010 or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org.

Are you Fatigued? By Dr. JeAn-clAUDe nereTTe

re financial pressures, emotional stress, unemployment, poor eating habits, smoking or drugs causing your adrenal glands to fail? Have you felt as though you just cannot seem to get yourself together? It is hard for you to relax or to get exercise? Do you find that you get sick more often? If so, then you like many others may be experiencing symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue. What is Adrenal Fatigue? Adrenal Fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, it can also arise during or after acute or chronic infections. As the name suggest, its paramount symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep. You may look and act relatively normal with adrenal fatigue and may not have any of the signs of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of un-wellness, tiredness or “gray” feelings. People suffering from adrenal fatigue often have to use coffee, colas, or other stimulants to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. Although it affects millions of people, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. Adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. With each increment of reduction in adrenal function every organ and system in your body is more profoundly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive. Your body does its best to make up for the under-functioning adrenals, but it does so at a price. What are the adrenals? No bigger than a walnut and weighing less than a grape, each of your adrenal glands sits like a tiny pyramid on top of a kidney. But don’t let their size fool you; these powerful little endocrine glands manufacture and secrete steroid hormones such as cortisol, estrogen and testosterone that are essential for life, health and vitality. They modulate the functioning of every tissue, organ and glad in your body to maintain homeostasis during stress and keep you alive. They also have important effects on the way you think and feel. What causes adrenal fatigue? It is produced when you adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crises such as a death of a loved one, a physical crises such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal fatigue. What are some of the key signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue? Salt cravings, increased blood sugar under stress, increased PMS, perimenopausal, or menopausal symptoms under stress, mild depression, lack of energy, decreased ability to handle stress, muscle weakness, absent mindedness, decreased sex drive, mild constipation altering with diarrhea, as well as many others. How common is adrenal fatigue? It is estimated that approximately 66% of the population has some degree of low cortisol levels, especially taking into account these severe economic recession we are experiencing. How can I tell if my adrenals are fatigued? ▸ Tendency to gain weight especially at the waist and inability to lose it. ▸ Reduced sex drive. ▸ Unable to remember things and unclear thinking. ▸ Lack of energy in the mornings and also in the afternoon between 3 to 5 p.m. ▸ Need coffee or stimulants to get going in the morning. ▸ Unexplained hair loss. ▸ Crave for salty, fatty, and high protein food such as meat and cheese.

Keeping your Family Functional By AlinA GASTeSi-De ArmAS, mA, meD, lmhc

O

ver the past few decades we have often heard the term “dysfunctional families” and in many social circles it has become a source of comic relief when describing one’s childhood. Rather than describe a dysfunctional family system, I find it valuable to help you to evaluate whether your family is functional, that is, operates in a healthy versus unhealthy way. Functional families are distinguished by the following clusters of characteristics: openness, conflict/stress management skills, love, self expression and setting necessary limits. Evaluate your own family’s health by answering the following groups of questions, yes or no:

Openness

▸ Are there family secrets such as abuse, addictions or affairs that members go to great lengths to keep hidden? ▸ Are members allowed to reach out to others for help when they need to, without being accused of disloyalty? ▸ Are family issues discussed openly and honestly? ▸ Does the family focus its energy on solutions, rather than blame when mistakes are made or problems arise?

Conflict/Stress Management ▸ Does the family try to acknowledge that conflicts and stressful situations are inevitable and temporary? ▸ Does the family attempt to work together to minimize and handle discord positively and appropriately? ▸ Does the family see challenges as opportunities rather than roadblocks? ▸ Does the family focus on what is controllable as well as do they make the best of unpredictable situations?

Love ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸

Do members express love verbally and through physical forms of affection? Are all members consistently treated with respect? Do the parents set clear, age appropriate boundaries? Do the parents acknowledge their role as primary caregivers?

Self Expression ▸ Does the family focus on its strengths as a family as well as on the strengths of each individual? ▸ Are individuals encouraged to express negative feelings such as anger, sadness and disappointment appropriately?

Setting And Observing Necessary Limits ▸ Are there explicit rules to deal effectively with the dynamics of day to day life? ▸ Do family members recognize that decisions and routines are consistent but can be flexible? ▸ Are rigid rules and expectations re-examined? ▸ Do the adults take responsibility for and shelter the children from their own emotional, financial, and relationship issues? If the majority of your answers were “yes” than you are most likely a part of a healthy, functional family. Virginia Satir, a noted author and psychotherapist, once wrote, “Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible - the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.” If too many of your answers were “no” then you may need to identify which cluster

ou’ve just brought home your newborn baby girl. You can’t wait to send all your friends and family her picture. You’ve bought the pink bow and the cutest outfit from the hippest boutique. But, the only problem: Her skin. She is blotchy and patchy. She has red spots with white bumps. This is not the picture perfect skin you expected.

Most babies do not, in fact, have picture perfect skin. Babies can come out bruised and misshapen. They can be yellow. They can have any one of a number of newborn rashes. In our sample baby’s case, she has a common rash called Erythema Toxicum. This rash occurs in over 50% of newborns over the first few days of life. It looks like little white pimple heads over a red patch of skin. You may see only a few bumps or there may be many. This rash resolves over the first few weeks of life and is usually gone by one month of age. It causes no discomfort and does not need to be treated. Other babies have bumps on their faces. Milia are little white bumps often seen on the cheeks or nose. They are blocked pores and require no intervention. They will eventually go away. Some babies can also get acne from the hormones of pregnancy circulating through them. Again, no treatment is needed. The acne will resolve over the first 4-6 months of life. Some babies develop a red flaky greasy rash over the eyebrows and scalp which can

spread over the forehead, ears, nose and beyond. This scaly rash may be Seborrheic Dermatitis. Seborrhea usually starts in the 3rd-4th week of life with a little cradle cap on the scalp. This inflammatory rash can easily be treated. Start by loosening the scale of the scalp with mineral oil and combing out the scale with a fine tooth comb. It is sometimes helpful to use a soft bristle baby toothbrush to scrub the scalp during shampooing since many parents are a little afraid of scrubbing over the soft spot. The toothbrush is a gentle way to scrub off the scale. If that doesn’t work, consult your doctor who may recommend an over the counter hydrocortisone ointment and a shampoo containing selenium sulfide, such as Selsum Blue. In general, the face and body rash clear once the scalp is treated. Many babies develop a transient red rash on the chin or near the mouth. This rash is usually due to wetness either from drool or the pacifier. Keeping the skin dry will eliminate this rash. There certainly are some baby rashes that indicate disease. If your child has a rash or other symptoms, you should see you doctor so that it can be correctly diagnosed. Your doctor can then offer further advice which is tailored to the needs of your child. FiTneSS Forum help for Bad moods By ellen lAThAm, mS

I

wake up in a bad mood…help! If you wake up to the sound of the annoying alarm, you’re dead tired, and feel out of sorts, how do you get up and get excited about your day?

Do A Body Scan

Get in the habit of scanning your body. Find the tension areas and where you are already holding negative energy. Now give it a number one to ten (ten being the worst). Recall a time when that area was a number one in tension – a more peaceful, relaxing moment for you - and try to go there in your head. Notice your breath during this and count six counts in and six counts out. Keep doing this while you are getting dressed. Then for 30 seconds before you leave your bedroom look up at the ceiling and smile.

Meditate For A Few Moments

Again, bring your attention to your breath. Each inhalation should bring in positive energy and each exhalation gets rid of negative energy. Sometimes doing this for 15 minutes is all it will take. If you are still stressed, think of a drawer, a closet and a window in your mind. Put all the small issues in the drawer, larger issues in the closet and the things you cannot control out the window. Now shut everything. Leave the problems, or issues, to be dealt with at a more appropriate time or give them to my higher power (those things I have no control over). Then fill yourself with light from the top of your head down and start your day.

62 July 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

Pay Attention To Nutrition

If you ignore your daily nutrient needs, you may find yourself in a bad mood more often than you want. Be very careful about your food selections. A morning meal of balanced carbohydrates, protein and some fats are ideal.

A Consistent Positive Mood

You can proactively work to shift things in your life so that your bad moods occur less often. Change your mental dialogue. Your most dominant thought determines the mood you will be in. Instead of dwelling on the dark and the angry, focus on solutions. Think of the ideal person you want to be and start living their life!

Exercise…Exercise…Exercise

Look, from the release of the “feel good” hormones a good old-fashioned sweat will make you feel refreshed. Quite frankly, the harder the workout the better. Our Ultimate Workout at the studio, which combines some time on our cardio equipment where you have a few minutes of “I am uncomfortable,” to muscle routines using dumbbells and straps from the ceiling, that again have moments of “I am uncomfortable,” is the best workout for the person with a lot of stress. Our bodies need that push or else the stress piles up and has nowhere to go. You then become that person who needs medication – or worse – experiences heart issues. Ellen Latham, MS owner of Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and Pilates Studio, 5173 S. wenty underprivileged students have seen firsthand the compassion in our community. Dr. Jane Therrien, of Weston Family Eyecare, provided free eye exams and glasses to needy children, including many who were displaced from their homes in Haiti following January’s devastating earthquake. Dr. Therrien became aware of their situation from one of her patients, Mr. Mathieu Daquin, a teacher and community leader. He founded the Weston-based International Center 4 Youth Services (IC4YS) to assist youth and families in need of direct services in Broward County. These twenty kids were all students of his at Boyd Anderson High School, where he is a French teacher. Dr. Therrien says she was so moved by Mr. Daquin’s efforts to help that she felt compelled to offer her professional services free of charge. After each student received a comprehensive eye examination, they were given the opportunity to select a complimentary pair of corrective eyewear. “These children face so many obstacles and are also severely hindered by the fact that they don’t see properly. I feel blessed to have made a small difference in these bright young kids’ lives,” shares Dr. Therrien. She believes it is vitally important that children receive routine eye examinations. Twenty-five percent of school age children have undiagnosed vision problems that lead to poor school performance. Dr. Jane Therrien, of Weston Family Eyecare, provided free eye exams to underprivileged students.

hauTe hair hair repair for men By JeFF chArleS

very man wants a full head of hair that looks nothing less than terrific and there is no reason why he can’t have it! The secret to maintaining a healthy, sexy head of hair is to keep it clean. Here is everything you need to know about when, what and how to shampoo. If you get your hair wet in the shower every day that counts as a shampoo, right? Wrong! Yet many men think that a daily wet-down does the trick. Although men have been washing their own hair from the time they were six or seven, nobody ever taught them how to do it properly.

Often a man will reach for whatever shampoo happens to be in the shower – whatever his wife or girlfriend or teenage daughter stashes there. This shampoo might be perfect for them, but not for him. We are not really talking about shampoo for the hair as much as selecting the right product for the scalp and the hair roots. Hair is dead. The scalp and roots are alive and these are the crucial factors in making a decision. So when men are choosing a shampoo they should pay attention to the need of their scalp and not the hair condition. There is a lot of attention seeking verbiage in products for hair. For example, for dry hair “moisturizing,” for thin hair “volumizing,” for dull hair “brilliance adding,” and so on. The most important factor to remember when choosing hair products for

66 July 2010 · www.ourcityweston.com

men is whether the scalp is dry, taught, flaky, or shiny. The word “shampoo” means “massage” in ancient Hindu. When shampooing, it is important to keep in mind that, apart from cleansing the hair, we need to ensure that a thorough massage is carried out to invigorate the scalp. If you live in an area with hard water, the increased quantity of mineral deposits can be damaging. It is always advisable to rinse with a good conditioner to counteract the adverse effect of water on the hair and scalp. It would be convenient for all of us if we could say “take this bottle and apply it to your hair all year round.” However, seasonal change also makes a difference as far as the hair and scalp requirements. In extremely cold weather, hair molecules shrink and heavier types of conditioners will be more suitable. On the other hand, very warm climate will cause the hair shaft to swell and hair will benefit from slower acting, lighter conditioners. Using the right tools such as combs, brushes and even dryers are also very important to the health of the hair and scalp. Jeff Charles is a hair and scalp expert. How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off

“O

BY DR. BARRY SCHIFF

besity is poised to overtake smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., and the majority of those deaths will be directly or indirectly linked to cardiovascular

disease.” Over 70% of the US population is overweight and over 30% is considered obese. In my prior articles I stated that in order to find a lasting solution to being overweight, one must identify the true root cause of what has gotten us overweight and what keeps us this way. Only then can we implement a strategy/lifestyle - not only to lose weight but to keep it off. Thinking we can diet sporadically and keep the weight off after resuming our prior nutritional patterns is the re-enactment of the definition of insanity; it simply does not work. In my last article, I alluded to three points that have contributed to us being overweight. 1) As a consequence of technology and having economic demands on us, we have become sedentary. We often rely on ‘fast food’ or other prepared foods that are relatively inexpensive, high in calories and often not nutritionally balanced. 2) Many of us eat not because we are hungry, but because we are stressed or need to be soothed or because we are bored. The 3rd and probably the most complicated piece to the puzzle is that certain foods are TRULY addicting. The things that we crave affect us like drugs. I contend that the manner in which we respond to and ingest certain foods substantiates that they are both physiologically and psychologically addicting. Some of us have a closer relationship with food than we do with people. The foods that we think are our friends are not. Because of our connection to certain foods and our desire to ingest them, we are not able to see the reality clearly. Let me attempt to clarify this but NOT in relationship to food but in relationship to people. Each of us has had close relationships with individuals that seem to change over time. They become more of a burden than of value. Often we struggle; trying to make it work yet the relationship is no longer what it used to be or what we perceived it to be. At some point, we recognize that even though there is a part of us that wants to hold on to it, we realize it is futile. The relationship is too painful and simply not worth it. Thus, we end it and detach from it. Years later many of us may have had the experience of encountering this person again. Often, we find ourselves thinking, ‘I can’t believe that I could have ever had a relationship with that person,’ never caring to see them again…When we are intimately involved in a relationship, we often don’t see what others see. Because of our enmeshment with that person, we lose our objectivity and don’t see how the relationship is toxic and truly not in our best interest. Many of us have a similar ‘toxic relationship’ with food. In order to better understand this, we need to know more about the foods we eat and their physiologic impact on us. Nonmedical people cannot be expected to know the physiologic ramifications of eating certain foods. However, through awareness, many can identify their effects on our behavior, and to some extent, our bodies. Certain foods, soon to be identified, were once thought to be innocuous or even good for us. The reality is, if we consume them in an unbalanced fashion, there are undisputable physiologic consequences. In a sense, we become both enmeshed with and addicted to them. Many of us are neither able nor willing to recognize this at first blush. All of the foods that we eat and derive energy or calories from fall into three groups: protein, fats and carbohydrates. Most of us get protein from eating animal products such as meats or fish; they may also be found in plants. Fats usually accompany protein from an animal source. Plants may also be a source of fat, typically healthy, i.e. olives, safflower and corn. Plants are also a source of carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates occur in table sugar and fruit. Complex carbohydrates are sugars that are linked together something like beads on a necklace and are in wheat, potato, corn and rice. Wheat is often made into flour which may then be made into bread, pasta, cakes and cookies. All forms of complex carbohydrates when eaten are digested and broken down into sugar. Proteins are digested into amino acids and fats into fatty acids. If we consume a diet that contains more calories than we require, regardless of the source, we gain weight. If we take in fewer calories than we need, we lose weight. America got fat when Americans went on a low fat diet! In my next article, I will review the evolution of how the Low Fat Diet set the stage for a culinary affair that fueled our addiction to certain foods, specifically carbohydrates and our never ending struggle to lose weight. The awareness of this paradigm can ultimately empower us to gain control over food as opposed to food having control over us! I

’m rushing through the house trying to get through my laundry list of chores. Every corner I turn serves as a reminder that there are more items to add to the never ending list that seems to be determining how I will spend the next hours, days and years of my life. As I trudge through the motions of accomplishing tasks, a little voice suddenly draws my attention away from this world of “chore eternity,â€? where I had become momentarily lost. “Mom, will you play a board game with me?â€? Jeffrey asks. I want to scream at him. Doesn’t he see I don’t have time for a game right now? How does he think his uniform will ever get washed in time for tomorrow’s game? Who’s going to make dinner? Should the fruits and vegetables I bought three days ago just rot and go bad in the fridge because I couldn’t find the time ONCE AGAIN to cut them up? As I yell out these justifications of why I can’t possibly fit in time for play‌ on the inside‌on the outside I am looking at a little boy who can not fathom a schedule that doesn’t permit the time for play. I realize at this point I have no choice but to agree to a game or be ridden with guilt as those big puppy dog eyes follow me around the house until I finally surrender. As Jeffrey cheerfully sets up the Game of Life one would think I am in excruciating pain. As I idly sit there, I am tormented by all there is to do that needs to get done. My lack of patience and need to rush resembles a child squirming, as they wait for

their mother to get off the phone. I act like an annoyed child that thinks they have been chained to a “Bored Gameâ€? instead of the excitement of a fast paced, intense graphics game. How can I sit here with NOTHING to do, nothing getting done??? However, as soon as the game gets started, within moments I am swept away into a world of silly decisions, frivolous spending and the thrill of the race. My next move is no longer predetermined by the next chore and I anxiously await the excitement of the next turn and not knowing where it will lead me. The next hour feels exhilarating as I escape from my “chore eternity.â€? I come to the realization that the chores will forever be there. There will always be dishes to do, a room to be straightened and clothes to be hung. The list will continue on and on but the Game of Life will not. rom t-shirts and tank tops to totes and towels, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More does it all, and for a lot less than you would think. The company specializes in one-of-a-kind custom designs. And the beauty of it is – you can print just one. “At Big Frog, anyone can order a quality custom t-shirt at a very reasonable price with one color or a million colors in any design,” states Nelida Coelho, owner of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More. “And they can get it done in less than a day.” That’s because Big Frog is revolutionizing the custom printing industry with its cutting-edge technology called direct-to-garment, or DTG, printing. Basically, DTG printing uses a giant, high resolution ink jet printer to print multi-colored images directly to individual garments or other items. Unlike traditional screen printing, which essentially just layers paint on top of the fabric, Big Frog’s DTG printing actually imbeds the dye right into the fabric. “Our ink actually becomes part of the fabric,” explains Coelho. “Images and graphics look better and last longer than any other process. Your Big Frog shirts will last through hundreds of washings and still look great.”

Customers can use Big Frog’s design center to create a one-of-a-kind design.

to women’s tank-tops, Big Frog also prints aprons, coasters, golf towels, tote bags, puzzles, car flags and mouse pads, although they call those frog pads. Whether you need one item or one hundred, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More is always your best value. That’s because Big Frog never charges design or artwork fees, set-up fees or minimums. The store offers 24-hour turnaround, although many items can be printed while you wait. If those aren’t enough reasons to hop on over to Big Frog, the store is also environmentally-friendly. The DTG printer uses water-based ink and no harsh chemicals. The store also offers organic cotton t-shirts. Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More is conveniently located in the University Shoppes at 1633 South University Drive in Plantation, just north of I-595 and next to IHOP. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 9am until 6pm and Saturday from 9am until 1pm. For more information call (954) 530-5670 or visit www.bigfrog.com/plantation.

Another benefit of DTG printing is that the customer is not limited by color, only their imagination. Big Frog can print over 16 million colors. “Full color prints are possible with photo quality resolution,” says Coelho. “That’s the beauty of our digital process.” Because everything is digital, customers can submit their designs electronically or create something special using the store’s in-house design center. Big Frog’s design specialists are always on hand to help customers access its enormous inventory of online images and fonts or incorporate personal photographs and company logos into the design. According to Coelho, “Customers come to the store with an idea of what they want to print for a family reunion, group 5K run, a cruise trip, sports team, or bowling tournament and with the professional help of our graphic designer we can make their idea a reality.” In addition to its selection of t-shirts in all sizes and styles, from infant’s onesies

izza lovers no longer have to travel very far to enjoy authentic New York Style pizza. Leone’s Pizzeria opened last month, offering quality Italian food at affordable prices. The restaurant is conveniently located at 1370 Weston Rd., near Einstein Bros Bagels, in the Country Isles Shopping Plaza. Owner Debra Leone grew up eating her great grandmother’s Italian recipes, which have been passed down from generation to generation. She and her husband opened Leone’s Pizzeria so they could share Grandma Loretta’s most famous recipes with their customers. “Grandma Loretta made everything from scratch, using only the freshest and finest ingredients,” said Leone. “There is nothing like the taste of authentic Italian cooking!” Leone teamed up with Chef Mike Perez, who has been making New York style pizzas for more than 30 years. He perfected his pie making skills in New York, as well as on Las Olas and South Beach. He arrives early each day to make fresh dough for the hand tossed pizzas. He tops them with homemade sauce, the finest mozzarella cheese available and a wide variety of toppings. Customers can order by the pie or slice. At any one time, there are more than 18 different combinations of pizza displayed in the 9 ft., three level case in the front of the restaurant – just like in New York! Some of the pizzas include pepperoni, meatball, margherita, sausage, Hawaiian, veggie, broccoli rabe and more. There is also a large selection of specialty “white pies,” including favorites like Verde, with fresh spinach and ricotta; BCR, with bacon, chicken, red onions and ranch; Buffalo, with garlic chicken, wing sauce and ranch; and Shrimp Pesto, with shrimp and homemade pesto sauce. Leone’s also offers pasta dishes and entrees – all made from scratch. Each is served with fresh baked garlic knots and a choice of soup or salad. The portions are very generous and most people leave with enough food for another meal. Customers can choose

from Meat Lasagna, Pasta Broccoli Chicken, Eggplant Parmesan, Veal Parmesan, Baked Ziti and more. Many customers come just for the Heroes, served on a freshly baked 12 Inch Italian roll. All of the cold Heroes feature Boars Head meat products. Some of the most popular are the Italian Combo, with ham, salami, Cappacolla and provolone; Tuna Salad, made with real albacore tuna and the Chicken Salad, made with fresh chicken. The hot heroes are also popular, especially the Meatball Parm, made from Grandma Loretta’s recipe; Chicken Parm, made with fresh chicken, and Veal Parm, made with real veal cutlet. Many customers like to start off their meal with a salad, appetizer or wings and end with a dessert. The salads are made-to-order and hand tossed with Leone’s homemade vinaigrette or Caesar dressing. Customers love the Mediterranean Salad, made with fresh greens, black olives, tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers and feta cheese. The Antipasto and Chicken Caesar Salad are also both very popular. All of the appetizers are made on the premises and include selections like Mozzarella Sticks, Fried Mushrooms, Fried Zucchini and Mozzarella Caprese. The select jumbo wings are fresh and never breaded. They can be ordered a variety of ways, including buffalo, teriyaki, sweet and sour, garlic butter, barbeque and more. A handmade Zeppoli, Italian ice or NY cheesecake are all great way to finish any meal. Leone’s is the perfect place for family meals, office lunches, birthday celebrations or team functions. The restaurant also delivers to homes, businesses and schools, as well as sports fields. Kids love the game area and parents love the children’s menu, where most meals are under $5, including a drink. Many customers also visit Leone’s to take advantage of the lunch special, which includes two slices and a drink for only $7 or three slices and a drink for only $9. Customers can mix and match slices from the pizza case or create their own combination – all for one low price. Leone’s Pizzeria is open from 11 a.m. to 10 a.m., Sun. to Thurs., and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fri. and Sat. For more information call 954-384-2388 or visit www.leonespizzeria.net.

custom club Fitting Terminology

DeAn SKlAr, PGA ProFeSSionAl

C

onfused about all the golf terminology? This golf glossary is here to help. I have compiled the following list of frequently used golf, golf club and fitting terminology to help you make sense of it all.

Bounce – Measurable bounce is the angle formed between the leading edge of the golf club and the lowest part of the sole. More important than measurable bounce is “effective” bounce, which is a combination of many sole design features that contribute to a club’s overall playability? Generally, clubs with low bounce tend to dig into the turf (requiring more precise ball contact), while clubs with higher bounce tend to resist digging and are, therefore, more forgiving in terms of ground impact. Bulge – A design characteristic of woods, bulge is the horizontal curvature of the

face measured in inches of radius. Bulge helps compensate for the spin created when the ball is struck on the heel or toe, resulting in straighter drives. The amount of bulge required is based on the location of the center of gravity — the farther from the face the center of gravity is located, the more bulge is required.

Center of Gravity – Optimizing the center of gravity (CG) location in a clubhead

design is critical for achieving the most favorable performance characteristics. The CG location significantly affects the golf ball flight (or roll for putters) by directly influencing all three of the major golf ball performance initial conditions: Ball Velocity, Launch Angle, and Spin Rate. The CG location can also significantly affect the moment of inertia (MOI) of the clubhead, which is the most critical factor in improving a clubhead’s forgiveness and consistency.

Divot – The mark left on the ground after turf is uprooted by the golf club during

the swing. The shape, direction and depth of a golfer’s divot reveal the position of the clubhead at impact and the path of the golfer’s swing, providing the fitter with valuable insight to the dynamics of the golfer’s swing.

Draw – A ball flight with a slight-to-moderate right-to-left curve for right-handed golfers, or a slight-to-moderate left-to-right curve for left-handed golfers. Depending on the golfer’s preferences, a draw may be a desirable ball flight. However, golfers who wish to change this type of ball flight may consider a flatter color code (applies to irons only) and/or a thicker grip diameter (applies to both irons and woods). Dynamic Swing Test – The third step in the fitting process, the Dynamic Swing Test is used to identify how the golfer’s hand position, posture and swing affect the position of the club at impact. Using special tape on the sole of the club, the golfer hits balls from an impact board that leaves marks on the tape. While a mark in the center of the club indicates the color code of an iron in the preferred impact position, the golfer should choose the color code that provides the best possible ball flight. Face Balanced – A design characteristic of certain putters that causes the face to

remain parallel with the ground when the club is balanced at its center of gravity. A face-balanced putter may be recommended for golfers with a straight-back-straightthrough putting path or for golfers who tend to push their putts.

Face Angle – Usually described as being open or closed, face angle refers to

the direction the wood clubface is designed to point when the shaft is in the proper position at address.

leGally SpeakinG can i relocate? By evAn h. BAron, PA

I

certainly don’t think that it is a coincidence that I am seeing an increase in relocation cases over the past several months. With the unemployment rate at about 12% and housing prices tumbling, many people are hoping to find “greener pastures”. The fact that many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location adds to their desire to move “back home”, where they have emotional and perhaps financial support. The problem this desire to relocate creates often times cannot be resolved by a simple agreement. For example; mom wants to move back to Massachusetts with the parties two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already occurred. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps”.

making children legal Before They Become 1 By elizABeTh r. BlAnDon

W

hen a foreign national enters the U.S., it is for a period of authorized stay. Children have an advantage because although that time limit may expire, a child does not have unauthorized presence while under 18 years of age. In other words, children cannot technically be “illegal.” This article discusses several options for children to obtain legal status. If nothing else, they may be able to leave the U.S., obtain permission to return while abroad (if the visa has expired) and return in legal status. For example, a Venezuelan child whose heritage is Greek or Italian can leave the U.S. even if she has been here without permission for several years. Then, she returns on her European passport (Greece recently became a member of the European Union) under the Visa Waiver Program. The child does not even have to apply for a visa.

Step-child of U.S. Citizen - The petition by a U.S. citizen for a step-child (defined as the child of the foreign spouse if the couple married before the child was 18 years old) is independent from a petition for the child’s foreign parent. In other words, even if the foreign parent divorced, a U.S. citizen can still help a foreign child obtain legal permanent residency (LPR) so long as the relationship between the US citizen and the child continues. Of course, with LPR status, the child can live, work and study in the U.S. Removal of conditions, if residency was obtained more than 90 days after the

residency of the foreign parent, does not depend solely on the strength of the parent’s marital relationship. This is important because when a foreigner obtains LPR status before the second anniversary of the marriage, Immigration requires the filing of another application and proof that the parent’s marital relationship is still valid. This is not possible where the foreign parent and the US citizen have divorced or are separated.

Victims of abuse, whether physical or mental, who have suffered at the hands of The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside. This of course can cause problems as well. If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible. If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however; allow for a relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children, against the effect it will have on the parent/child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers. The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be filed, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must file a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions; including address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed time sharing schedule. If you are faced with a possible relocation issue I suggest you contact my office at 954-385-9160 and schedule a free consultation.

a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident can obtain status in this country. If the child obtained legal permanent residence based on a parent’s marriage to the abuser, she can apply for citizenship after three years instead of five. This exception applies even if the “child” was 21 years old or older at the time she became a resident.

An abused child can also apply for legal permanent residency by herself. She does not need a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. Immediate legal status is also available to victims of domestic violence through a status known as the U visa.

An adopted foreign child has the same rights as a natural child of a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. The child must be adopted before she is 16 years of age and there is also a requirement that the parent have two years of living with the child as well as two years of legal custody.

If the LPR or US citizen is adopting a brother or sister, the child can be

adopted until the age of 18. These cases are sometimes complicated because the natural parent lives with the adoptive parent. When that is the case, Immigration places the burden on the adoptive parent to demonstrate that it is a real parent/child relationship.

how to effectively Wipe out Second mortgages and lines of credit, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in your home By omAr J. ArciA, eSq., ForecloSUre DeFenSe AnD conSUmer BAnKrUPTcy ProTecTion ATTorney

T

housands of homeowners in our community are now upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage and no other payments? Also, if the market turns around, think of all the equity you could build back up years from now? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping”

the lien, a “cram down” or “strip down.” In a Chapter 13, second mortgages and lines of credit against a principal residence, can be stripped down to the appraised value of the home. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage totally unsecured if the first mortgage exceeds the value of the personal residence. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is appraised for less than the value of the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers qualify for this option. Tax liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due debts (including your home mortgage) through affordable payments spread out over the 3-5 year life of the Chapter 13 bankruptcy plan. Most importantly, none of your creditors will be able to contact you or proceed with a foreclosure during this bankruptcy protection period. To find out more about upcoming consumer seminars offered by the Arcia Law Firm, please visit www.arcialawfirm.com/seminar or www.arcialawfirm.com/ seminario. When registering, mention you heard about this seminar through Our City Weston and Davie Town Times magazine, and you will receive two complimentary admission tickets. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com. We may be able to help you achieve a long term solution to your personal mortgage crisis.

pruce up your home with one call to JRL Carpentry & Painting. This Weston-based company specializes in those little projects, such as crown molding, attic access ladders, painting and pressure cleaning, that can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home. The company has been faithfully serving the Weston community for over ten years. “One of the reasons we’ve been so successful is our commitment to customer service,” states licensed contractor and longtime Weston resident Barry Zuckerman, owner of JRL Carpentry & Painting. “We strive to make this experience easy and pleasant. We show up on time and finish on time and on budget.” No wonder clients rave about JRL. Here’s what some satisfied customers are saying: “I didn’t think there were any honest and reliable contractors until we worked with JRL.” and “It’s not often I come across a business that I really enjoy working with. It was a pleasure to deal with JRL.” Zuckerman offers a lengthy list of references, but chances are you’ve seen Zuckerman or one of his crews at work in your neighborhood. The hands-on owner is checking jobsites at least once a day, if not actually doing the project himself. He believes in the pride of doing a job and doing it right. “I’m a perfectionist. I tend to worry more about the job than the homeowner. That’s why we only do a few things, but we do them well.” JRL has developed a reputation as the company to call for crown molding. It also offers other carpentry services such as baseboards, chair rail, window casing and decorative framing. The company provides free, in-home estimates. “We’ll come to your house, take measurements, show you product samples, provide design advice, and come up with a plan and price on the spot,” states Zuckerman. And the prices are all-inclusive. “Our fee includes labor, material, priming, sanding, and two coats of premium paint,” says Zuckerman. “We’ll move the furniture before we start and sweep up and move the furniture back once we’re done. All you need to do is sit back, relax and watch our skilled craftsman add this elegant touch to your room.” And the best part is, you don’t pay until the job is completed to your satisfaction. JRL requires no deposit and all work is guaranteed. That includes all carpentry and painting services. The company specializes in interior and exterior painting, as well as pressure

cleaning. “Weston residents will be happy to know that we can match any pre-approved house color,” notes Zuckerman, who can also help facilitate the paint approval process with homeowners associations. Another JRL Carpentry & Painting service is installing attic access ladders. “If you need more space to store your stuff, consider adding an attic ladder,” suggests Zuckerman. “It provides easy access to hundreds of square feet of storage space.” In addition to the traditional garage attic access system, JRL also offers the Televator telescoping attic ladder. It’s a pulldown staircase designed specifically for interior attic access such as through a bedroom closet. JRL attic access ladders start at $325, including labor and material. JRL Carpentry & Painting is properly licensed and insured in Broward County. To schedule a free, in-home estimate, call Barry Zuckerman at (954) 384-6520. For more information on the company and its services, visit www.jrlhomeservices.com.

oday’s new homes of large rooms with soaring ceilings and expanses of glass can present daunting challenges to even the most creative homeowners. Since most residential furniture is no more than 3-4 feet high, a common decorating dilemma is what to do with all the “nothingness” above that level. Additionally, guests are always more comfortable when the scale is felt to be more relative to the human form. One solution – ceiling height can be visually lowered by applying a molding on the wall below the ceiling. A rule of thumb is to place the molding at about the ninefoot level. The wall above this detail is then painted the color of the ceiling, thus lowering its perceived height. This can even be done on the gable end of a vaulted room. Since light colors appear to recede and dark colors advance, a ceiling will also look lower if painted a deeper hue of the wall color. But don’t use too dark or too bright a color in a smaller room, as it may become oppressive. Light the lower areas of the room more intensively so that attention remains closer to eye level. Drapery and window treatments in these rooms need to be carefully designed to insure the decorative interest of the design is at an optimum height. Framed wall art, mirrors, and tapestries serve to focus interest at a mid-level height, while corner voids can be filled with well lighted trees for softening, texture, and interest. Volume ceilings in bedrooms can be transformed into a cozier scale through the careful use of canopy bed treatments. An actual canopy bed is not necessary to accomplish this trick. Kitchen ceilings can be brought into a more human scale through the careful use of wall coverings and accessories. The inclusion of crown moldings at the top of cabinets serves to suggest that the ceiling is at that level. A slightly darker color than the walls will again help to fool the eye. The reverse of the ultra-high ceiling situation is the standard eight foot ceiling needing an updating “lift”. Vertically striped wall coverings lead the eye to the ceiling where bordering can be used to further expand the feel. Next, paint the ceiling the background color in the border to give it the feeling of extending the space by minimizing contrast. Borders can also be placed directly on the ceiling abutting the wall rather than on the wall itself. This will make the ceiling seem higher by appearing to be part of the wall and softening the demarcation between the two. Crown moldings are a wonderful way to lift attention to ceilings. For a low ceiling, crown molding can extend more on the ceiling than on the wall by simply having the molding reversed when installed. Paint the molding only a shade lighter or darker (but with more sheen) than the wall to avoid defining the ceiling too sharply. Don’t overlook the effects of lighting. Chandeliers and sconces which reflect up onto the ceiling and are just a bit brighter than the rest of the room will give you the feeling of a larger space. Ceilings should be an important and attractive part of your design plan. A little bit of thought and creativity can add a whole new dimension to your rooms. liding doors can be a challenge. What are my options? How do I keep the heat out? I want easy-to-operate blinds. I am tired of my verticals and want to update the look. We had the answers on show at our booth at the Home Design & Remodeling show in Ft. Lauderdale at the Broward Convention Center. Visitors came away with exciting possibilities of what to do to update their tired-looking verticals. Vertical blinds were the main choice a decade ago, but now we suggest replacing those with energy efficient treatments to update your décor and save you $$$ in energy bills. Come in today to our Beautiful Windows showroom to see our Vertiglides, Sliding Panels, Folding Woven Wood Doors, Plantation Shutters, Motorized Draperies, and Sheer Luminettes. How important is your view? Vertiglides from Hunter Douglas maximize your view with a small stacking of only 8 ft. Select the Architella Duette fabrics to qualify for up to a $1500 tax rebate. You can have an 8 ft. wide slider installed for around $1290. If your style is more contemporary and clean cut, then look at the Skyline Sliding panels Woven Wood Folding Doors with more than 200 fabrics. For a Tommy Bahama look, opt for our thermal lined woven wood folding doors, which look terrific with a tropical setting here in Florida. For a chic look, the Hunter Douglas Luminette sheers are fabulous. They open and close like a vertical with the added beauty of a layer of sheer to soften the incoming light and help with the UV. Pleated drapery with lining on a motorized rod is definitely an elegant upgrade as well. So too are Plantation shutters which add elegance and value to your home.

They Are WhAT They eAT By Dr. PeTer Birzon, Dvm

H

ow important is the nutrition factor in our pet’s health? Well, let’s think about it for ourselves. It’s critical in the overall health for them same as it is for us. Obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, endocrine (hormonal) imbalances, organ dysfunction, etc., are all related and somewhat dependent on our nutritional status. If you look at most of the pet foods at the supermarket and in pet stores, these are often times less than optimal for a carnivore’s true dietary needs. Pet food companies love to bulk up the food with fillers, grains and by-products. These usually have little to no nutritional value and frequently can be the source of problems or imbalances created in our pets.

Corn and corn gluten meal are common offenders. Pets derive almost no nutritional value from this ingredient and it has been identified as a common allergen in allergic skin and gastrointestinal problems. Wheat and other grains can also be part of these issues. All those labels that have chicken or beef by-products are basically using the cheapest or poorest part of the meat that can still technically pass as meat. The nutritional value is very low. So not only are these foods full of things that don’t maximize our pet’s natural immune function, they also can be harmful to their health. Even many of the mainstream “Vet recommended” foods fall into this category. I’m not saying that your pet will get sick if they don’t eat a more natural food, but if we can feed them a diet that is superior nutritionally for the same price as other foods, then why wouldn’t we do that? Most of the pet stores now have an aisle dedicated to these types of foods. At Indian Trace, we carry some of those products like IVD/Royal Canin, Natures Best, lam’s hypoallergenic food, etc., and we’d be happy to discuss your pet’s needs as these can vary and should be addressed according to breed and lifestyle. We also have our foods for specific illnesses like K/D for kidney disease, C/D or S/O for urinary problems, l/D or W/D for gastrointestinal issues and many more. For the more “naturally” inclined owners, I’d be happy to discuss the use of the raw foods or home cooked meals as this is gaining in popularity and can provide a complete and healthy diet for your pet. Bon appetit…and health! Dr. Peter Birzon, DVM has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years and has owned and operated four animal hospitals in South Florida. avor the delicious flavors of Peru at Sabor Latino. The Nicoletti family shares its favorite family recipes with diners at their popular lakeside restaurant. It specializes in authentic, home-style Peruvian cuisine with a focus on freshness and flavor. “Because Peru is a coastal country, Peruvian cuisine features a lot of seafood,” explains Giuliana Nicoletti, who works in the family restaurant alongside her parents and sister. “We also include a lot of chicken and beef in our dishes so you never get a chance to get bored.” She points out that many of the menu items may seem familiar to Weston diners. That’s because Peruvians eat a lot of fusion food. “There is a Chinese and Italian influence in Peru because a lot of immigrants came to Peru a long time ago and their cooking became part of our culture.” For example, Tallarin Saltado is Peruvian-style chow mein made with either chicken or beef, and Tallarines Verdes is spaghetti mixed with pesto sauce and topped with steak or chicken breast. Of course the main focus of the menu is on traditional Peruvian dishes, along with some house specialties. “My mother, Martha, is the main chef and she created many unique recipes for the restaurant.” She put her twist on the traditional causa recipe. Causa is a popular Peruvian appetizer. It is traditionally made with chicken. Sabor Latino offers several seafood varieties, including the Pulpo al Olivo Causa featuring homemade smashed potatoes stuffed with octopus and covered with Sabor Latino black olive cream sauce. The Causa de Mariscos features calamari, Chef Martha Nicoletti brings her fabulous family recipes to shrimp and crab. Sabor Latino. Seafood lovers may want to try one of the tasty ceviches. One of the most popular choices is the Ceviche de Conchas Negras featuring succulent black mussels and presented in a martini glass. The entrees are equally interesting in preparation and presentation. The new Corvina en Salsa de Naranaja y Cilantro features fried fish covered by a sauce made with sautéed cilantro, orange juice and white wine served with mashed potatoes and rice. The Pescado a lo Sabor Latino features a fish fillet covered in Sabor Latino’s unique scampi (ajillo) sauce made with yellow pepper, white wine and garlic topped with seafood and served with fried yucca and rice. Fans of spicy food should try the Pescado a lo Macho, which features a fish fillet topped with seafood and Peruvian sauce made with aji panca (hot pepper). There are plenty of menu choices for non-seafood eaters. The Arroz Chaufa is Peruvian-style fried rice prepared with either chicken or beef. Another Chineseinfluenced entrée is the Lomo/Pollo Saltado, which features either beef tenderloins or chicken sautéed with onions, tomatoes, cilantro and soy sauce, served with rice and French fries. Regardless of what you order, rest assured that it is prepared using only the freshest ingredients possible. “Peruvian cooking is very healthy,” says Giuliana. Most of the

food at Sabor Latino is grilled and everything is made-to-order, so you can always make requests. “Traditionally, Peruvian food is very spicy, but we can prepare it mild if you prefer.” The food is not the only thing that is hot at Sabor Latino. It is the place to go for live entertainment in Weston, with diners Latino offers live entertainment every weekend on its dancing into the wee Sabor lakeside patio. hours of the morning on weekends. “We offer live entertainment on our back patio every Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon,” says Giuliana, who coordinates the restaurant’s entertainment. She is excited to announce that the popular Venezuelan band Tartara will be performing this month to celebrate Sabor Latino’s first anniversary. “They perform at the hottest clubs in Miami and many private parties in Broward,” she boasts. Giuliana tries to bring bands from different Latin and South American countries. “I like to focus on different music from different countries to expose people to other cultures.” In the past, Sabor Latino has featured mariachi performers from Mexico, Brazilian dancers to celebrate Carnavales, and Musica Criolla drummers who play Afro-Peruvian music. In addition to celebrating other cultures, Sabor Latino celebrates many holidays. It is the place to go for special occasions like birthdays or festive holidays such as Halloween and Valentine’s Day.

Sabor Latino specializes in Peruvian cuisine.

If you have never tried Peruvian cuisine, one of the best ways to sample it is Sabor Latino’s daily specials. Lunch specials are only $5.99 and feature over ten dishes to choose from that vary from chicken, beef, fish and pasta, along with soup or salad. “We offer a cantina lunch. If you buy everyday it is only $5.00,” says Giuliana. Sabor Latino’s 2-for-$20 special is probably the best deal in town. You get one appetizer, two entrees and one dessert for only $20.00. Giuliana says it includes most menu items and is available every day from 11:30am until 6:30pm. Sabor Latino is located at 2406 Weston Road in the Waterways Shoppes II, next to Flanigans. It is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30am until 9pm, Friday from 11:30am until close, Saturday from noon until close, and Sunday from noon until 9pm. he fifteenth season of the Miss Judy Children’s Theater Workshop ended with a standing ovation for the talented cast and crew. Each year the drama program presents a full-length musical. This year’s performance was Gypsy. Judy Jacobson has been running the all-volunteer theater troupe with support from senior volunteers, dedicated parents and program veterans. The workshop members are children, ages six to 17, who live in the Weston and Bonaventure area. Fifty-eight students made up the cast, backstage crew, choreographers and set designers. “The assistant director this year was Adrian Padrons, a talented 15-year-old high school student who performed, choreographed, as well as directed,” notes Jacobson. “Adrian’s debut as a choreographer and director was worthy of a Tony.” The choreographers were also alumni of the program. the workshop for ten or more years. According to Jacobson, the audition process begins every October. By December the roles are cast. Because the troupe performs two shows, she assigns a different cast for each show. “This procedure gives many more children a chance to perform major and minor roles.” Over the next five months, the young actors receive voice coaching and dance instruction and run lines for expression. At the same time, commissioned artists volunteer their time to create the elaborate sets, with help from some of the teens. Two performances of Gypsy were held over Memorial Day weekend at The Bonaventure Town Judy Jacobson has been volunteering Center. The stars of the Friday evening show were her time for the past fifteen years to Noreen Hecker, Sara Pardo, Jade Ziane, Gillian run a student theater company. Rabin and Mandy Figueroa. Stephanie Elfont, Leigh Green, Ben Rabin, Gillian Rabin and Mandy Figueroa were the leads in the Monday afternoon performance. Both shows concluded with a Memorial Day tribute and preview of the 2011 production of Mamma Mia. “That finale, featuring our 13-year participants Amanda Gasbarro, Jenna Michelle and Laura Falcone, was worthy of So You Think You Can Dance,” boasts Jacobson.
