he Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941 began a chain of events that led to one of the greatest collective acts of selflessness the world has ever seen. Men left well-paying careers to join the army, even with the Great Depression fresh in their memories. Women abandoned traditional roles in the home to work in factories by the millions. The ideals of citizenship and prioritizing the betterment of society above personal goals is, in part, why we refer to those Americans as “the greatest generation” today. People, by the millions, did their duty, regardless of the impacts on themselves. It is time for our generation to do our duty. About 2 million people have died from coronavirus infection globally. The economic impact of the pandemic is measured in trillions of dollars. One only has to go to the grocery store or to pick up a meal at a local restaurant to understand the impacts on a personal level. People have lost jobs, older people are scared and many are or have been sick. But, there is finally good news: if we all do our duty for one another, much of these horrible impacts will soon be in our memories. We must all get vaccinated. The primary benefit of the COVID vaccine is the fact that it reduces a person’s likelihood to give it to someone else. If enough of us are vaccinated, the disease will stop spreading. Even if you are young, healthy, and unlikely to suffer any symptoms at all, you can still be an unknowing, unintentional spreader of a deadly disease to someone who could become very ill. This is our Pearl Harbor moment. It is time for each of us to do our duty in support of a greater cause. Get vaccinated. The life you save may not only be yours. Sincerely,

our freshmen at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) were the recipients of the inaugural Legacy Scholarship, four-year Florida University Plan scholarships offered by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) and Florida Prepaid College Foundation (FPCF) to graduating high school seniors who reside in Florida and plan to attend Nova Southeastern University.

Journalism Camp because she was the Sports Editor of the Sword and Shield newspaper and an accomplished athlete for four years on both the school soccer and lacrosse teams. Because of the pandemic, most on-campus university journalism programs were cancelled or converted to virtual institutes. Under the leadership of Timothy Crothers, a professor in the UNC School of Journalism, the online format prepared Schwab for the new school year as students in Broward County went virtual for their classes. “I think the online format of the institute worked very well, and I was still able to learn a lot as if I was on campus at UNC,”
explained Schwab. “The only downfall was that I couldn’t make as strong a connection with the other students as I would have if we were all staying on the campus for those few days.” At the Journalism Camp, using Zoom, students interviewed a variety of subjects starting with a UNC basketball player and heard how the media affects a student athlete and how to approach a player after a loss. “Overall, the camp not only helped me become a better sportswriter but also taught me skills that I can take to any type of news,” exclaimed Schwab. “One point I definitely will share is that when you’re

Impingement Syndromes in Dancers

ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point.” Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down.
Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing
potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. t is the policy of this state to encourage the peaceful resolution of disputes and the early resolution of pending litigation through a voluntary settlement process” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or your friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues, by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation”. There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances, there are other “team members” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and therefore the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process, each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full, and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney”, there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. Teenage Sleep: Why is Your Teen So Tired?

leep is food for the brain. During sleep, important body functions and brain activity occurs. Sleep is vital to your wellbeing: as important as the air you breath, the water you drink, or the food you eat. As we grow, the hours of sleep change. When you are an infant, you need daytime and nighttime sleep. It is not until you are between the age of four and five that you stop taking naps during the day and are able to accomplish your daily routine with only resting between eight to ten hours each night. During “the teen years” which coincides with puberty, our sleep demands change. It is recom-

mended for teenagers to be sleeping between 8.5 to 9.5 hours each night while most of them sleep only between 5.5 to 7 hours each night. All humans come with an internal clock that influences body temperature, sleep cycle, appetite and hormonal changes. This biological and psychological processes are called the Circadian Cycle. Before adolescence, the internal clock in children makes them fall asleep around 8pm but puberty changes teens’ internal clock thereby delaying the time of feeling sleepy to around 11pm or later. Teens require more sleeping hours than adults due to physiological changes that occur during puberty -- it is the time when the body is working harder to conduct the changes. In addition, during nighttime sleep the body goes through a maturation of its immune system and the brain releases growth hormone and serotonin -- a chemical substance with an essential role in preventing depression. There are various consequences to not getting the proper amount of sleep each night: 1. Limiting the ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. 2. Catalyzing aggressive or inappropriate behavior – such as yelling at your friends or being impatient to friends and family members. 3. Causing one to eat more – most of the time
unhealthy food that contributes to weight gain. 4. Distorting ones’ memory – thereby limiting students’ abilities to retain and remember the previous day. 5. Increasing chances of depression, car accidents, and drinking caffeinated beverages – like energy drinks and other stimulants. Here are some strategies that promote obtaining the adequate amount of sleep each night: • Make sleep a top priority just like school homework. • Keeping track of time, organizing each day, establishing priorities. • Establishing a bedtime, wake up time and sticking to it. • Not eating or exercising within an hour of sleeping. • Trying to avoid cell phones, the TV, video games or computers an hour before bedtime. • Avoiding caffeinated drinks or sleeping pills. • Associating the bedroom as a place only for sleep (i.e. not spending excessive amounts of time in bed). • A brain that is hungry for sleep will not hesitate to get it, even when it is not expected. hile last month we had a chance to review the past year and look ahead to a new year, I began thinking about the importance of arts and culture in our lives and in keeping our spirits up. Regardless of any challenges that may face us, The City of Pembroke Pines will always uphold its promise to provide every resident with access to world-class art exhibitions and art education opportunities. With the COVID-19 situation, we began offering from the safety of your own homes, the opportunity for everyone to visit The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery online at www.thefrankgallery.org to enjoy groundbreaking virtual art exhibitions and countless virtual workshops, lectures, and art tutorials for all ages and abilities. These are the types of offerings that will continue as we adjust to what 2021 brings. With the nation-wide closures necessitated by the novel coronavirus, The Frank embarked on this new venture to provide our community with safe access to its exhibitions and programs by way of virtual tours, videos, and 360° photography. The leadership team at The Frank was not content to simply share still images and slideshows in lieu of exhibitions. Rather, they partnered with the digital art experts at Interactive Initiative to virtually create the recognizable interior of the beautiful gallery space that we all know and love so that virtual visitors can explore every angle of The Frank in a smooth and seamless viewing experience. From there, they began the virtual installation of the cutting-edge exhibition Biological Futurism which presented local, national, and international artists whose works are inspired by scientific illustration and nature. The Frank utilized animation, 3D renderings, and omnidirectional photography to create simulations based upon the artists’ drawings, paintings, models, and sculptures. For the first time ever, this virtual platform allowed The Frank to exhibit custom works of art created in London. Emmy award-winning computational artist Andy Lomas created breathtaking sculptures, comprised of over 10 million individual cells, that are rendered with realistic areas of light and shadow using specialized software.
