It’s Graduation Season!
H
igh schools and colleges across the area are holding graduation ceremonies this month. Young people, from every background, are celebrating these milestones and looking forward to the next phase of their lives. Graduation often marks a “watershed moment” in a person’s life. Ceremonies for graduating students date from the first universities in Europe in the twelfth century. The hood, gown, and mortarboard cap that we associate with graduation today are derived, in part, from what people wore back in those days. It’s important that we continue to recognize this step in a person’s life today. In some ways, graduating from high school is a more monumental moment in a young person’s life today than ever before. Decisions on what to do next, whether it is attending college, pursuing a trade or joining the military are often the first major decision a person makes on behalf of themselves in their lives. The world today’s graduates are entering looks little like the world graduates faced just ten years ago. Congratulations to the graduates of 2022! Good luck pursuing your dreams and ambitions.

Voters to Decide on Broward County Schools Funding Increase in August By Our City Staff
B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is presenting voters with a referendum that will appear on the August 23, 2022, primary election ballot. “The Secure the Next Generation” referendum would increase property owner’s contribution by 0.50 millage points from current levels. A millage rate refers to the amount of property tax paid based on the assessed value of a piece of real estate. One mill is equal to 1/1,000. For example, a 1 mill tax on a $100,000 property would yield a net tax of $100. The school district says it will use funds to recruit and retain high-quality teachers and eligible staff by increasing compensation, providing additional school resource officers and school safety staff, and, enhancing essential programs, such as mental health services. The current ½ mill assessment will expire next year if the proposal is not approved by
voters in August. “If the referendum doesn’t pass, we would have zero, which means our teachers would not receive any of the supplements that they receive now,” said Broward School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson. If the proposal passes it will generate about $177 million annually, which represents more than 5% of the district’s total annual expenditures. The majority of the funds will be used to attract and retain teachers by augmenting salaries. In addition to BCPS, Charter Schools are set to receive $45 million in funds. “The counties on both sides of us are actually recruiting some of our top talent from Broward County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Vicki Cartwright. Broward County spends about $12,000 per student per year. The county’s expenditures are slightly higher than the state of Florida overall, but lag neighboring Miami
Dade and Palm Beach Counties. According to BCPS the average Broward homeowner would see a tax increase of about $23 per month following the adoption of the proposal.

Updates to Pembroke Pines Utilities Service
T
he City of Pembroke Pines would like to thank residents for being valued customers of our utilities. As work continues towards improvement of our utility, please know that staff cannot express enough their appreciation for resident resiliency as everyone navigated the COVID-19 pandemic and through the launch of a new billing system. The Utility Department’s newly implemented Citizen Self Service (CSS) portal is proving to be a game changer in giving residents access and control of their accounts, efficiently and effectively. Also, the Utility Office is open again for face-toface interaction and full-service transactions. In an effort to support the city’s 45,000 customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City chose not to disconnect services for overdue payments and no late fees were charged or service charges made. However, as we move beyond the pandemic, the City finds it necessary to resume normal operations throughout our organization. This includes standard delinquency collection processes and disconnection of service for
delinquent accounts. Effective May 2, 2022, all delinquent accounts will be subject to late fees and disconnection of service. Delinquent account holders are encouraged to bring their balances current in order to avoid service disruption. Payment arrangement requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The Free Seas' "Flotsam Fauna" exhibit is a collection of art created from marine debris found on the shores of South Florida beaches. ince returning from Tallahassee, it has been my priority to meet with constituents across Broward County and to hear from you. And in these conversations, I have learned that Floridians are concerned with two things- the rising cost of living and, more recently, women’s access to reproductive healthcare. I am well aware of the affordability crisis Floridians are facing. Food and gas prices continue to rise, the cost of childcare has increased by as much as 200% in parts of the state, and rent and home insurance are skyrocketing. Instead of wasting time waging culture wars and fighting partisan politics, I led my Caucus to bring real fiscal relief for Florida’s families. Improving maternal and infant health outcomes is central to my legislative agenda. In 2021, I championed legislation to extend Medicaid’s postpartum coverage from just two months to an entire year. And last month, my bill was signed into law directing Medicaid to cover donor breast milk for Florida’s smallest and most premature babies, alleviating the cost to families and hospitals. 1 in 3 families struggles to pay for diapers. I have been fighting to provide Florida families relief since my own kids were in diapers because parents should never bear a tax burden on essential items to keep their children safe and healthy. That is why I worked to include a sales tax exemption beginning July 1st, 2022 on diapers for babies so that parents can more easily afford products to keep their infants healthy and clean. This tax break also includes youth clothes and shoes for a full year. Following the Supreme Court decision leak indicating the court is poised to strike down Roe v. Wade, people across our state and country are speaking up to voice their opposition. In swift response, I stood among leaders and advocates to fight any action removing a woman’s basic human right to make personal healthcare decisions. And as the Senate Democratic Leader, I will bring this fight to Tallahassee, mobilizing lawmakers across our state to fiercely protect a woman’s right to choose.

I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks. ear Readers, Hurricane season is here – June 1 to November 30 – and the predictions continue to be updated. Colorado State University (CSU) recently issued their forecast, predicting at least 19 named storms and nine hurricanes, four of which will be Category 3 or higher. An average season typically has 14 named storms, approximately seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. AccuWeather forecasters agree, also predicting an active tropical season. All storms need to be taken seriously. The City of Pembroke Pines has a comprehensive section on its website at www.ppines.com/ hurricane called “Pembroke Pines Prepared.” You’ll find information, videos and important resources regarding what to do before, during and after a storm. I encourage everyone to please be prepared. School will also be ending this month, so please drive carefully and watch for children. We don’t want any accidents to ruin a fun summer. Speaking of fun, each year more than 1,000 children throughout the City of Pembroke Pines have participated in Mayor’s Kids’ Day. This year, the event is back and will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022. As host, I love this fun day held for Pembroke Pines residents/kids ages 15 and younger who are pre-registered and wearing the official Mayor’s Kids’ Day wristband. Pre-registration for wristbands is required and free -- please check the city’s website at www.ppines.com for registration days, times and locations. Wearing the special wristband entitles the children to hunt for deals and freebies from local businesses throughout the city throughout the day. Some of the things they might find include free bowling, swimming, haircuts, ice cream, mini golf, cookies, breakfast, and more. Businesses will also offer discounts on purchases, food samples, raffles, and more. And I look forward to a special brunch with the children which will take place at 10:30 am at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. They’ll be greeted by characters representing various city businesses, visit with fire and police personnel, and enjoy other new activities and surprises. Pembroke Pines Celebrates its 62nd Birthday
A
fter a three-year hiatus, the annual Pines Day Celebration came back in a big way! Thousands of residents celebrated during the day-long event that featured cotton candy, living bands, dancing, limitless cupcakes, cheer teams, painting classes, carnival games and so much more. The day culminated with a live concert and fireworks. Another highlight of the event was the recognition of the Pembroke Pines Royal Court. Winners included Beauty Brajdic as Little Miss Sweetheart Queen, Sabrina Cabrera as Little Miss Sweetheart Princess, Ella Sturgeon won Young Junior Miss Pembroke Pines Queen, Miranda Ramirez won Young Junior Miss Pembroke Pines Princess, Briana Brewster was awarded Junior Miss Pembroke Pines Queen, Alexandra Colom was recognized as Junior Miss Pembroke Pines Princess, Sonia Rojas Giraldo won Miss Pembroke Pines Princess, and Nikole Ramirez was Miss Pembroke Pines Queen!
