“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”
“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

Here’s to George Washington!
T
he United States will turn 246 this year. This is cause for celebration. We live in the world’s longest-running representative democracy since Julius Caesar ended the Roman Republic over 2,000 years ago.
Our country’s ability to evolve with the times while maintaining its constitutional government is one of the keys to our long-lasting success. In large part, we have George Washington to thank for that. Washington was an extraordinarily popular figure following the end of the Revolutionary War and many people were calling for a strong executive to serve as President. While they did not want a king, many wanted a “strong” leader with king-like powers. If Washington chose to consolidate power during his early days as President, rather than humbly focusing on establishing a democracy, history could have turned out very differently. This is precisely what happened in France just three years after Washington left office. Napoleon Bonaparte quickly morphed his role as First Consul of France into the lifetime Emperor of France. It is easy to imagine decades of unrest and conflict had Washington had similar ambitions. While we watch the fireworks and celebrate Independence Day this year, lets give a nod of gratitude to our first President. George Washington set the example for every American leader. We all can aspire to his humility and deep belief in duty, especially our elected officials.

Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Art Presents EVITA
T
he Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) was founded in 1993 to provide low-cost, high-quality live theatre. The theater group routinely features local professional and non-professional actors in its productions. The community theater offers Broadway classics for all to enjoy and will be featuring the classic Evita at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. 16 shows of the musical will be presented between July 15th and August 7th. Evita is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. It concentrates on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. The story follows Evita’s early life, rise to power, charity work, and death. The musical began as a rock opera concept album released in 1976. Its success led to productions in London’s West End in 1978, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical, and on Broadway a year later, where it was the first British musical to receive the Tony Award for Best Musical.
PPTOPA is committed to providing the community with theatrical productions that inspire, entertain and celebrate the artistic process while incorporating diversity, cultural awareness and outreach through high-quality live theater and education that is available to everyone. The theater company will present Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The show follows a wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna’s father, singularly focused on taking bloody revenge. PPTOPA is always looking for enthusiastic theatre lovers to get involved in their productions! Whether your interest is onstage, backstage, front of house, or in some other capacity behind the scenes, if you love theater, it is a great way to get involved. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954-437-4884, visit www.pptopa.com or send an email to info@pptopa.org.

Don’t Let Mosquitos Bite!
osquito season is here again. As the summer rains come and go, it’s time to take preventative measures to safeguard yourself and your home. Help reduced mosquito breeding habitats by eliminating standing water in and around your property. The life cycle of a mosquito is approximately seven days. They can breed in small amounts of water that collect in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains and in plants such as bromeliads.
Regularly dump anything that holds water. If it's too large to be dumped, apply larvicide to keep the mosquito larvae from developing. Some mosquitoes, such as the variety that carries the Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, breed indoors and outdoors and bite anytime of the day or night. If you go outdoors on a buggy night, wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. Spray your skin and clothing with an insect repellent that contains DEET or other approved ingredients.
Draining standing water is the most effective way to stop them from reproducing. “Mosquitoes multiply quickly, but you can stop them in their tracks,” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. “Practice ‘drain and cover.’ When you dump standing water, you eliminate the breeding ground for mosquito larvae and getting rid of the source is the best way to avoid being bitten.” Mosquito eggs that are laid in shallow water can hatch in a day or two. The larvae grow fast, turning into a pupa that quickly develops into a full-grown mosquito. The life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes eight to 10 days. The pupae become flying mosquitoes in two to three days.

The winners are selected on a state-by-state basis and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Pembroke Pines native serves at
Naval Air Technical Training Center
A
By Lt. Cmdr. Chris Donlon, Navy Office of Community Outreach
irman Mathews Soares, a native of Pembroke Pines, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) in Pensacola, Florida. As a student at NATTC, Soares is serving among sailors and Marines developing the skills needed to be successful naval aviation warfighters. Students at NATTC are taught the requirements and skills needed to be successful in their new careers. Soares joined the Navy five months ago. Today, Soares serves as an aviation structural mechanic. “I joined the Navy to better myself, not just for myself, but for my family as well,” said Soares. According to Soares, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Pembroke Pines. “Growing up, I learned the importance of resilience and mental toughness,” said Soares. “I also learned the ability to ‘power through’. These lessons have helped a lot in my Navy career.” NTCC’s mission is to provide world class professional aviation warriors to the Navy fleet supporting combat readiness anywhere on the globe, while taking good care of our people, families and being good neighbors and stewards in the city of Pensacola and the surrounding region. The training center’s leaders and experts develop, deliver and leverage technology to optimize performance of our Navy, Marine Corps and foreign national students. We provide the most up-to-date and relevant training available to our sailors and Marines ensuring Naval aviation’s success. Serving in the Navy means Soares is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “We are the greatest Navy in the world and an important part of our national defense because we maintain freedom of navigation around the world,” said Soares. Soares and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service. “So far, I am most proud of finishing my qualification school because I didn’t really apply myself or try too hard in high school,” said Soares. “However, here I was motivated 30 / Our City Pembroke Pines / July 2022
to give it all I had. Now, I am proud to hold the rate of aviation structural mechanic safety equipment.” As Soares and other sailors continue to train and perform the mission they are tasked with, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy. “Being in the Navy means that I know I will be able to protect and serve my country and

that my family back home is safe and sound,” added Soares. The Naval Education and Training Command is the U.S. Navy’s Force Development pillar and largest shore command. Through its “Street to Fleet” focus, Naval Education and Training Command recruits civilians and transforms them into skilled warfighters ready to meet the current and future needs of the U.S. Navy.

JUICY
■ OUR CITY EATS
Never Tasted This Good!
T
wo words come to mind when you visit The Juicy Crab, located at the corner of Pines Boulevard and NW 101st Ave: Fun and Flavor. The restaurant is bright and welcoming and staffed by a very friendly team who will set you at ease the instant you walk in. The flavors diners enjoy, whether it is from one of their signature sauces, a sweet dessert or a shot off their “Juicy Cocktails” menu will keep the most sophisticated foodies coming back for more. The Juicy Crab is a great place to visit with a group of friends or family members to enjoy a perfectly seasoned meal and have fun while eating it. The friendly and knowledgeable staff help even a seafood boil novice choose the perfect meal.
It is OK to Get Messy
The Juicy Crab offers seafood boil entrees. These delectable meals are steamed fresh in The Juicy Crab’s kitchen, smothered in one of their signature sauces, and brought to your table sealed in plastic on a platter. The plastic is opened at the table, allowing diners to breathe in the incredible spicy aroma emanating from the piping hot sauce. After dinner is served, it is time to get messy. Dining at The Juicy Crab is typically, and most successfully done with your hands. The act or cracking open a perfectly seasoned crab leg and pulling out the juicy meat is a primal joy for diners of all ages. Don’t worry about splattering that new top, however. Prior to being served your server will bring a “bucket” with everything you need, including bibs, plastic gloves, cracking tools for the fish, and some wet wipes. Dining is definitely a hands-on activity and the bigger your mess, the happy the serving staff is, because they know you are enjoying your meal.
Cajun Flavors in South Florida
TAKE A LOOK! 32 / Our City Pembroke Pines / July 2022
Flavors and variety are the key to enjoying a meal at The Juicy Crab. The steamed oysters are a perfect start to any meal. Diners can choose from any of their sauces at whatever spice level they are comfortable with. The Juicy Crab offers a variety of fan-favorite seafood boils to choose from. You can build
your own boil, by selecting from a wide variety of options or you can choose from one of their Combo Boils. We chose to build our own boil and included some of the restaurant’s favorite items like lobster tail, snow crab, crawfish, and shrimp. Diners get a wide variety of flavorful options including Garlic Butter, Lemon Pepper, Old Bay, and our favorite, the Juicy Special. The food was melt-in-yourmouth tender while the flavor from the sauce brought it all together. The shareable service allowed everyone in our party to try a number of different items, enhancing the experience.
Juicy Cocktails
The Juicy Crab offers a number of specials and signature cocktails from the bar. They also offer a number of specialty shots to keep the fun going. We loved their Peanut ‘Butter and Jelly’ and the ‘Banana Split’ shots. The bartender also offered a unique creation of pineapple cubes soaked in moonshine. We told you this restaurant was authentically Cajun, didn’t we!
The Place to Enjoy A Meal
What makes The Juicy Crab great is its utter lack of pretension. Diners eat the same shrimp, crab, or lobster that they might be served at a stuffy white-tablecloth restaurant without worrying about making a mess. The seafood is seasoned perfectly and cocktails are always available. If you want to listen to some tunes while you eat, there is Karaoke on Tuesdays evenings and a DJ on Friday nights. ■ ASK THE EXPERT
ANKLE PAIN IN CHILDREN
And Teenagers By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M.
T
he ankle joint is a complex structure consisting of bones, ligaments, tendons, growth plates and cartilage that allow the ankle to move smoothly. Many structures can be injured from twisting the foot or ankle in sports or from blunt trauma. Flat feet are a primary source of ankle pain because of the stress that the foot puts on the inside of the ankle and the lower leg. Good supportive shoes and occasionally orthotics will help to give more support and stability. Many cases must be evaluated for potential long-term problems that may necessitate physical therapy or a surgical procedure. Growth plates are present on the inside and outside of the ankle. Injuries to the growth plate or fractures to the bone can occur during sports or general activities. Immediate care is necessary to prevent growth disturbances. Bones and growth plates out of position need to be placed back into the proper position
to prevent any long-term problems. Ligament injuries are very common in sports. Ligaments connect the bones together and when the foot twists excessively ligaments can tear. These problems usually necessitate immobilization in a boot or cast to allow the ligaments to heal primarily. Cartilage injuries are rare but when pain in an ankle or foot persists MRIs are necessary to evaluate the bone, bone marrow and cartilage surfaces further. CT scans may also be necessary. Arthroscopic surgery may be necessary in some cases. Infections are rare but they can become very problematic. Any injury that causes redness, swelling, heat and a generalized fever may need to be addressed immediately. In most cases, antibiotics alone will take care of an infection, but it is necessary to be seen immediately to prevent the need for more aggressive treatment. Inflammatory conditions that affect children must also need to be ruled out. Soft tissue and bone tumors are extremely rare, but if there are bumps or areas of swelling that are
noticed they need to be evaluated quickly. The more quickly a child or teenager is evaluated for a foot, ankle or leg problem the better the prognosis.

Internet Safety Month Targets
Keeping Children Safe Online
N
Pet of the Month
By Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book
o parent in their right mind would drop off a child in the middle of Times Square or the Las Vegas Strip with little more than a safety talk and a directive to behave — but that is in essence what’s occurring when children are allowed to access the Internet, largely unsupervised and unprotected, on digital devices. Each Internetcapable device acts as an open door for millions of people, directly into your — and your child’s — life. An invaluable resource when used for education, entertainment, and discovery, parents must realize that the digital world is also a playground for skilled predators. Where kids go, so too do those who wish to harm them…which means digital devices pose a clear and present danger for kids. In fact, 1 in 5 children who touch a digital device is sexually solicited online. Chilling. Especially when you consider that more than a third of children under age 12 began interacting with a smartphone before they entered Kindergarten, and 20 percent of this same cohort have a smartphone of their own. While authorities and Internet watchdog groups across the world are doing all they can to crack down on online predation, parents and caregivers must be the first line of defense when it comes to cyber safety. I urge families and youth-serving organizations to use to learn about ways to keep children safe online. Safety starts with priming digital devices to ensure children are protected as much as possible on a very basic level. Prior to giving any Internet capable device to a child, conduct a thorough investigation into its capabilities and ensure you are the primary user/administrator so that nothing can be done without your approval (changing passwords or settings, downloading applications, etc.). Also remember that just because your child’s friends are using an app or game, does not mean it is safe. Apps may require location settings to be shared while in use or promote inter-app messaging between players or users. Predators have been known to groom unsuspecting kids on popular games like Fortnite or apps such as Snapchat. While safety settings help mitigate the opportunity for predators to contact children, constant monitoring of a child’s device is one of the most effective protective measures. Establishing an Internet code of conduct is also important for children of all ages to understand that their behavior online should mirror their behavior in the physical world. Questions to consider include: • Does your child understand that things posted on the Internet or sent on a digital device are permanent – even if the content is deleted from your child’s device? • Does your child know not to post any personal information about themselves (pictures, address, phone number, etc.) online? • Does your child understand that communicating with someone online that they do not know is very dangerous because that person could be anyone, even an adult? Online predators are smart — but with education, awareness, and advocacy, we can be smarter. When it comes to safety, conversations do not have to be scary or uncomfortable. Instead, bring kids to the table and empower them with rules and tools to navigate the digital world safely, securely, and with confidence. Above all else, ensure your child or teen knows how to recognize unsafe situations and that they know they can come to you to talk about ANYTHING without fear of getting in trouble. If you find that your child has been contacted by a predator, contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cyber Tip Line and submit a report at cybertopline.org or 1-800-THE-LOST. 38 / Our City Pembroke Pines / July 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

s we begin our new chamber year this July, we are proud to say that we are home to over 630 business members in our chamber organizations. Since it became safe to gather again, we’ve celebrated over 25 grand opening Ribbon Cutting ceremonies, and we have many more planned over the next few months. All Ribbon Cuttings on our calendar are open to the public, and we invite you to celebrate with your new neighbors. We are strong proponents of supporting our local community and we urge you to contribute to the health and vitality of our local economy by shopping local, eating local, spending local, and enjoying local, especially with our local small businesses. Small Business is the backbone of our local economy - they are our neighbors and friends, and supporting small businesses in our area means supporting a local family’s dreams and successes. As higher fuel prices keep us from venturing too far from home this summer, consider exploring everything that southwest Broward has to offer in entertainment, culture, and food. Play “tourist” in your own backyard and discover things you may have never known were so close by! Check our online business directory by category for ideas on where to start. Over the next year, we will be renewing our accreditation with the US Chamber of Commerce. We’re currently a fourstar Accredited chamber and the only accredited chamber in Broward. This is a designation attained by only 3% of chambers nationwide, and it recognizes chambers for outstanding contributions toward positive change in their communities. Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. ear Readers, Summer is here and that means many of us will be swimming in pools and in the ocean to cool off. I’d like to remind everyone how important water safety is. Hanging out the pool, at the beach or even splashing in a wading pool on a hot Florida day is a great way to beat the heat this summer, but it can also spell tragedy if you don’t know how to swim. Drowning takes the lives of many people of all ages every year. I encourage everyone of all ages to learn to swim. Also, be sure to assign Water Watcher” for children as they swim. The City of Pembroke Pines offers swimming lessons for people of all ages at the Towngate Pool located at 901 NW 155th Avenue. Pre-registration is required and classes are limited to eight students. Registration hours are Monday - Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Towngate. Class space is very limited for the summer lessons. Please call the Towngate office at 954-450-6895 for availability and further information. Summertime also is a time for one of America’s favorite pastimes “baseball.” Please join me and the Recreation and Cultural Arts Department at the Mayor’s Play Ball Summer event on Friday, July 15, 2022 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Flamingo Park, located at 1900 NW 122 Terrace. This free event, which promotes youth baseball and softball, will feature fun activities, music and food. There will be a Pitch, Hit, Run Competition with separate age divisions, as well as divisions for Beginners and Advanced players. Boys and girls ages 7 to 14 will be given the option of using baseball or softball equipment. This event, in conjunction with the United State Conference of Mayors (USCM) Play Ball initiative and Major League Baseball, focuses on the sport of baseball and encourages sustained participation in the sport for years to come. Play Ball serves as a platform to connect with those who are currently involved in the game, while also providing alternative ways for those looking to get involved, with a specific focus on youth participation. If it is music you are looking for, please join the City of Pembroke Pines this summer in welcoming back the ever popular Summer Symphony Series. This celebration of music features diverse presentations from local musicians and the Symphony of The Americas Chamber Orchestra. All presentations and parking are free to the public. Seating is limited. All presentations will be held in the Charles F. Dodge City Center Lobby, 601 City Center Way, unless otherwise noted on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. For more information and dates, please call 954- 392-2122. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.
