F
ebruary is Black History Month. The annual observance is celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the UK. In the U.S., school students learn about the contributions people of African descent have made to our county, communities, and the world. Many public observances are held across the country, and a renewed focus is made on the continuing struggles African Americans face. Before Black History Month was a nationally recognized observance, “Negro History Week” was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. He chose the second week of February for its observance because that week typically includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to encourage the teaching of Black History in schools. At that time, there was frequently little to no inclusion of the contributions and plight of African Americans in history classes. In the 1970s Negro History Week became Black History Month and is celebrated across the country. It is more important now than ever to remember the severe sacrifices African Americans have made. We must all remember historian George Santayana’s famous quip, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Remembering the worst of our past, as well as, the best, will help us all continue to become better versions of ourselves. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

6 Deadly Heart Conditions Knowing the Signs of Heart Disease Can Save Your Life By Mammen P. Zachariah, M.D. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. With the heart, immediate treatment can lessen the damage and having access to a specialized cardiac team is crucial. See a doctor if you have these symptoms:
• Feelings of indigestion or heartburn, any discomfort, pressure, aching, burning, or squeezing or chest pain • Shortness of breath • Palpitations – irregular heartbeats or a “flip-flop” feeling in your chest • An elevated heartbeat • Weakness or dizziness, nausea or sweating
• Pain in the shoulders, arms, neck, throat, jaw or back
If any of the above symptoms last five minutes or longer call 911 immediately.
5 Other Heart Conditions to Watch:
Heart Failure: occurs when the heart isn’t pumping as strongly as it should. Symptoms include shortness of breath and swelling. M6756_BHC_CardiacAdvertorial_OurCity_8.5x5.indd 1
Arrhythmia: occurs when the heart beats out of rhythm. If untreated, arrhythmia can lead to stroke, heart failure or cardiac arrest.
Coronary Artery Disease: occurs when not enough oxygen rich blood is delivered to the heart. Symptoms can vary and many experience no symptoms. Cardiomyopathy: reduces the heart muscle’s ability to pump blood. Symptoms include irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, exhaustion, ankle and legs swelling or fainting.
Heart Valve Disease: occurs when one or more of the valves doesn’t work properly. Symptoms include unusual heartbeat, fatigue, shortness of breath and swelling of the lower extremities.
A multidisciplinary approach in cardiac care is key. For more information, visit BrowardHealth.org/CardiacCare or call 954.759.7500.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

When his 13-year-old daughter Suzanne began playing as a junior, Herr discovered there were few tournaments in the area, so he decided to launch the event at the nearby public clay courts at Flamingo Park. Unknown at the time to the dedicated father, there was no slowing down as the caliber of the competition increased rapidly. Fast forward many decades and approximately 500 athletes come to Plantation from all around the world with their eye on the ball and their hearts on the prize. For many foreign players, this event allows them their first visit to the United States and
for American players, it’s their first taste of international competition. According to Hall of Fame tennis journalist (and former Orange Bowl participant) Bud Collins, “The rites of passage in junior tennis include a pilgrimage to the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships. It’s part of the education.” “The Orange Bowl International Tennis Tournament is a prestigious Junior tennis tournament for young and exceptional tennis athletes to showcase their talents in a highly competitive pool of players,” explained Daniel DeBruyne, City of Plantation Recreation Supervisor for Racquet Sports. “The caliber of competition is evident through the skill level of the players and the list of champions reflect the international scope of tennis, with winners coming from different nations.” The Orange Bowl is the most recognized Junior Tournament in the World and is

Renowned champions include John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer, Dominic Theim, Chris Evert, Gabriela Sabatini, Sofia Kenin, Bianca Andreescu, and most recently 15-year-old Cori “Coco” Gauff who went on to defeat five-time champion Venus Williams during her Grand Slam tournament debut in the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Plantation Home Up for Sale BY KIM COX
Remember not so long ago, when you
could make your fortune in real estate. It was nothing then to buy a home, wait a short while, and then sell it at a tidy profit. And then do it all over again. Well, as you probably know, times have changed. As good as the market is right now, home prices are still below what they were at their peak. Buyers are far more discriminating and it’s more critical than ever to learn what you need to know to avoid costly seller mistakes in order to sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. Selling your home is one of the most important steps in your life. You need the tools to maximize your profits, maintain control, and reduce the stress that comes with the home-selling process. A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your
home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse -financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled "The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar". To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-605-0724 and enter 1000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Python Elimination Program Accepting New Participants
N
on-native Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in South Florida and are one of the most concerning invasive species in Everglades National Park. Pythons compete with native wildlife for food, which includes mammals, birds, and other reptiles.
The Burmese python is now distributed across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, including all of Everglades National Park and areas to the north including Big Cypress National Preserve and Collier-Seminole State Forest. A number of Burmese pythons have been found in the Florida Keys, but there is not yet confirmation of a breeding population in the Keys. The South Florida Water Management District Governing Board is taking aggressive action to protect the Everglades and eliminate invasive pythons from across the landscape. Starting in March 2017, the Python Elimination Program incentivizes a limited number of public-spirited individuals to humanely euthanize these destructive snakes which have become an invasive apex predator in the Everglades. The program provides access to python removal agents on designated lands in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Palm Beach counties. The program is now accepting applications for new python removal

agents. All submitted applications will be kept on file and reviewed whenever positions become available. Python removal agents will receive $10.00 per hour or $15.00 per hour depending on the area for up to ten (10) hours each day while actively searching for pythons on designated lands. For all eliminated pythons, the District will make an additional payment per python: $50.00 for pythons measuring up to four (4) feet, and an extra $25.00 for every foot measured above four (4) feet. See example below:
To be eligible, python removal agents must: • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age • Possess a valid driver's license • Possess a valid email address • Have a bank account for direct deposit

at-home dental care, with period▸ Regular, ic veterinary dental cleanings, is the best way to prevent periodontal disease and keep your dog’s mouth healthy.
What Causes Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver.
What Are the Signs of Periodontal Disease?
The signs of periodontal disease include:
breath ▸ Bad or bleeding along the gum line ▸ Redness which may be tinged with blood ▸ Drooling, ▸ Difficulty chewing
28 / Our City Plantation / February 2022
at the mouth ▸ Pawing or missing teeth ▸ Loose swelling, especially under the eyes ▸ Facial discharge ▸ Nasal ▸ Gum recession
How Is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed?
Your veterinarian can see signs of gingivitis and tartar buildup by examining your dog’s mouth. However, since most periodontal disease occurs beneath the gum line, the only way to truly assess your dog’s mouth is to perform an examination while your pet is under anesthesia. Your veterinarian can use a dental probe to measure any loss of attachment around each tooth and take dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess for bone loss, abscesses, and other problems.
How Is Periodontal Disease Treated?
Treatment depends on the severity of the disease. If your dog has mild periodontal disease, consisting of gingivitis without any bone loss, a thorough dental cleaning that includes the area beneath the gums, followed by dental
polishing, can help reverse the problem. Your veterinarian may also recommend a dental sealant that helps prevent tartar from accumulating on teeth. If there has been a loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, however, this cannot be reversed. Your veterinarian may need to apply antibiotics beneath the gums and perform dental procedures, which may include tooth extraction. Ask your veterinarian which dental diets or treats are best for your pet. After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian may also recommend a plaque prevention gel that adheres to the teeth surfaces to inhibit tartar. Ask your veterinarian what dental hygiene methods are recommended for your dog, and don’t forget to keep scheduled appointments for follow-up dental checkups. ⊲ Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. DON’T LET GREAT TOE PAIN
Slow You Down By Dr. Warren Windram D.P.M. Foot & Ankle Surgeon
D
oes your big toe joint hurt? Does Motion cause you pain and discomfort? This might be a form of arthritis called Hallux rigidus, which is actually a form of degenerative arthritis in the big toe (first metatarsal phalangeal joint). Sometimes this progresses to the point where surgery is the only way to eliminate or reduce the pain associated with this condition. The goal of hallux rigidus surgery is to reduce pain, improve function and decrease deformity to enable the patient to resume normal activities. Various types of surgery are available to treat hallux rigidus. In selecting the procedure or combination of procedures for your particular case, your surgeon has taken into consideration the extent of your deformity based on x-ray findings, your age, your activity level, and other factors.
One common procedure that is proven to eliminate pain at the joint and the limitation which it puts on daily activities is an arthrodesis or as commonly called, a joint fusion. During this procedure the surgeon makes an incision at the top of the joint of the big toe and then removes bone spurs (bony growths) that are present, removes the cartilage in the joint and completely reshapes the joint itself. They then realign the joint to a corrected position and insert fixation hardware to secure the joint to allow for fusion. The incision is then closed with a plastic type technique to reduce scar formation, leaving an excellent cosmetic result. The patient is then placed in a splint and recovery begins. Recovery from these procedures generally takes 6 to 12 weeks. During a portion of this period, weight bearing on the operative foot will be gradually permitted. ⊲ Dr. Windram specializes in foot & ankle reconstructive/trauma surgery, with a particular interest in total ankle joint replacement surgery. He has always been involved with podiatric surgical training, working as the podiatric surgical residency director at Memorial Health Care System. Dr. Windram is the current director of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship program at Westside Regional Medical Center and a clinical instructor at Westside and Memorial Health Care System’s podiatric surgical residency programs. How Often Do You Hit Solid Shots? By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
I
mproving your golf game begins by improving your ball striking, as there’s nothing in golf quite like making pure contact. Once you experience this sensation, you’ll be hooked, trying to repeat it over and over again. Achieving solid contact tends to be difficult for many golfers; it’s what separates the pros and better players from average to higher-handicap golfers. The good news is, if you experiment with the accompanying tips and drills, you can learn how to hit solid and pure golf shots more often. Hands forward upon impact – As you strike the golf ball, the grip end of the club needs to be leading the hands and club head through the hitting area (a mandatory ingredient for hitting solid iron shots). This move causes the club head to compress the ball into the ground, which helps make your divot after the ball, not before. Correct posture – The second key to achieving solid contact is having correct posture throughout the swing, as this allows you to swing the club on the proper plane. The majority of golfers who struggle with making solid contact lose their posture as the club head connects with the ball. This leads to many miss-hits; fat and thin shots, hooks, slices and chunks. It is essential that you keep your posture, just as it is at address, throughout the swing. Control the Clubface – The final ingredient for solid ball striking is controlling the clubface through impact. In other words, the face of your club must be square when it contacts the ball. Most golfers have the face of the club too open at impact, which leads to miss-hits that cause loss of power and distance. The clubface should rotate from open (prior to impact) to square (at impact) to slightly closed (after impact). The timing of this face rotation is what separates good ball strikers from not-sogood ball strikers. Proper practice will improve this timing. Here are a few practice drills to try: Golf Ball drill – By placing an extra golf ball behind your ball (12 to 14 inches behind the target line), you will learn to strike the ball with a descending blow and have your hands leading the club head through the hitting area. If you use a scooping motion (hitting the ground
before you make contact with the ball), you won’t be able to strike your ball without first hitting the extra ball. Posture drill – Controlling your posture throughout the swing is something that all good players do, and most amateur players don’t. When the clubface strikes the ball, you must return to the same posture that you had at address. Practice by facing a mirror and taking a half backswing, then swing the club down to the ball, and stop. You should return to your address position. Keep repeating this motion until it starts to feel natural. On the range, run through this drill before you hit each practice shot. Release the Clubface drill – Put a band-aid
30 / Our City Plantation / February 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
on the back of your left wrist. On your down swing, turn your left hand over, so the bandaid is pointing down toward the ground as you swing the club head through the hitting area. On your practice swings, do this slowly, so you experience the feel of the club head turning over upon impact. When hitting balls, try to just let this motion happen, and after a while it will become automatic.

How to Select an Estate Planning Attorney
F
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
inding an estate planning attorney can be overwhelming. Here are some pointers to help you make the right choice. Qualifications. It is fair to question an attorney as to how they developed their estate planning expertise. Often attorneys who are transitioning from other practice areas may present themselves as an estate planning attorney although they have little actual training or experience. Ask how many trusts have they drafted. Do they hold any advanced degrees? To which professional associations do they belong? Keep in mind that it is impossible to be an expert in all areas of the law. Attorney’s Fees. Price is always an important factor. However, making your selection solely on price may not be wise. In setting fees, a reputable attorney will consider the amount of time that they will need to invest and the complexity of the plan. Once they know what needs to be done, they can quote a fee. Customized Documents. A high-quality estate plan should be custom drafted to fit your individual and family needs. Be suspicious of firms who quote flat fees over the phone for anything more than a simple will, or who advertise low prices for trusts. This often means the attorney does not draft custom documents but rather uses the same boilerplate document for each client and simply fills in the blanks. That is not planning, it’s word processing. The Process. During your planning meeting, your attorney should spend several hours with you and your spouse gathering detailed information about you and your loved ones, including your hopes and fears. Whether you are single, divorced, widowed, married, or have a blended family, the planning process should also include a lot of interactive questions intended to help formulate your unique plan. Additional Services. Be sure to ascertain exactly which services your attorney provides and whether there are additional costs for: trust funding (changing title and/or ownership to your trust), answering questions and telephone conversations with you or your financial advisors, reviewing and explaining your estate plan with your successor trustees and with your family in the event of your disability or death, future modifications to your estate plan, and recording and filing fees. Success. A successful estate plan establishes clear instructions for your successors and trustees as to what they should do to achieve your objectives. Your attorney should work with your team of professionals ( financial planners, accountants, life insurance advisors), to advise and assist you and your successors. Be sure to look for an estate planning attorney with whom you and your spouse feel comfortable and at ease. Planning is not a transaction, it is a lifelong exercise. Chemistry is important, as is competence and shared values. Do your research. Ask questions. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
