Navigating the Back-to-School Season in the Modern Age
As we bid farewell to the sun-kissed days of summer, it’s hard to believe that another school year is just around the corner. With the arrival of August 21st, the first day of school for most children in the area, it’s time to gather the necessary school supplies, select the perfect lunch box, and wrap up those summer reading assignments. However, preparing for school has become increasingly intricate over the past two decades, as technology and educational options have evolved.
Gone are the days of covering textbooks in brown paper bags. The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the way students engage with learning materials. From downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks, to accessing a vast array of digital resources, students now have a world of knowledge at their fingertips.
After-school programs have blossomed into a diverse range of opportunities, surpassing the traditional offerings of sports and music. Today, students can choose from an array of enriching activities, including computer classes, dual language programs, and much more. Likewise, parents now have an abundance of educational options for their children. In addition to traditional public and private schools, charter schools, home school, and virtual schools have emerged, providing families with a broader selection tailored to their needs.
If your family finds itself in the midst of the back-to-school preparations without a concrete plan, fear not! Our City is here to lend a helping hand. Inside this issue, you’ll discover our comprehensive Back-to-School Guide, designed to assist you in navigating the educational landscape. Packed with valuable information on the area’s top preschools, private schools, and educational programs, as well as an extensive directory of after-school activities ranging from arts to YMCA programs, this curated guide aims to provide practical support as you gear up for the upcoming school year.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of back-to-school preparations, it’s important to savor the remaining weeks of summer. Cherish the sun-drenched days, create lasting memories, and relish the freedom that this season offers. Before you know it, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of growth and learning will begin.
So, take a deep breath, enjoy the fleeting moments of summer, and rest assured that you have the resources and support to embrace the forthcoming school year with confidence.

Academic School 4 Arts New Way of Education!
by Terry Jaillet
Founder of the Academic School 4 Arts, Inna Maor professional musician and educator was raised in the very famous school of Stolyrsky in Odessa Ukraine. Her dream was to create a similar school where all students would have the same interests, goals, and love of the performing arts from a very young age.
The school's daily curriculum strikes a harmonious balance between essential subjects such as math, language arts, science/STEM, social studies, and physical education and the four major art forms: music, dance, theater, and the fine arts. Students learn more than one musical instrument, play in ensembles, create multiple projects, and participate in concerts and competitions statewide.
The School’s vision is to give students a place that merges the highest level of academic education with the highest level of performing art education while maintaining a nurturing and enriching environment for their success.
▸ Academic School 4 Arts is accepting applications for new students and accepts all Department of Education scholarships and vouchers.
To schedule a tour, visit www.as4a.org, email academicschool4arts@gmail.com or call 954-999-5956.
Anew kind of school opened its doors in Cooper City last September. The school is smaller than a typical school, with just 70 K-12 students, with 20 faculty members. The impressive 5:1 student-faculty ratio isn’t the most unique thing about Academic School 4 Arts (AS4A), however. It is a new school, where the fine and performing arts are treated as equal learning disciplines with core academics.
Courses meet all of Florida’s State Standards and are taught by certified teachers who provide age-appropriate instruction and individual support. The school also offers the most robust performing arts curriculum in Broward County, is created by award university professors and taught by experienced, highly talented artists and educators.
OPEN HOUSE
Academic School 4 Arts is hosting two open houses. Call now to reserve your place.

Ten life preservers now circle the lake at Plantation Central Park, thanks to an effort by a mom who lost her son to drowning.
The city’s Public Works department placed the rings around the lake in July after conversing with Sarah Perry, whose son, Aden, drowned in April 2022 while trying to rescue a driver who had plunged into in a canal. They are called Aden Perry Hero Life Rings.
Aden Perry, 17, was out walking his dog with his mom at the Residences of Sawgrass Mills when he saw a car enter a canal. Aden dove in to save the driver and his head hit a rock. Both drowned.
“There was nothing there that night that he could have used and I always think that what if there was a life ring there that night, then perhaps my son would be here today," she said.
Ever since that happened, it has been her mission and to honor her son, who was a former member of the swim team at Plantation Central Park and a junior at Western High.
“I couldn’t just let him die in vain," Perry
said. "I don’t want this to happen again and any other mother to suffer like I am or go through what I’m going through, and I don’t want any more lives to be lost when there’s something like this that we can do to prevent that.”
Plantation Mayor Nick Sortal lauded Perry’s efforts. She has succeeded in placing Life Rings in many Broward County municipalities.
Sortal, a former writer and editor for the Sun-Sentinel newspaper, was presented in 2007 with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Broward County for his newspaper coverage of Swim Central, the county’s water safety program. He said he initially balked at the life ring idea because he preferred to focus efforts on children learning water safety. Once information for swim lessons and other safety information was added to the wooden Life Ring post, he relented.
“In almost 100 percent of cases, drowning is preventable via parental supervision,” Sortal said. “That’s the objective that I stress above all. Watch your child.”
A QR Code guides visitors to WaterSmartBroward.org, which offers a
$40 discount coupon on swim lessons.

Fabulous 4th Festivities
By E.F. Israel
With a centenarian for a grand marshal and fireworks bursting in the sky, the July 4 festivities drew plenty of smiles in Plantation.
The day kicked off with a parade down Broward Boulevard, ending at City Hall. Norma Fink, a 101-year-old part-time employee at the Veltri Tennis Center, served as the parade grand marshal. She was flanked by two friends from the tennis center.
“I’ve never had a better day,” she said.
Nick Sortal, elected as mayor in November of 2022, enjoyed his first parade as the city’s leader. Along the way an acquaintance provided him with a balloon hat that he wore with a smile.
The night ended with music from the Havoc 305 band at Plantation Central Park. Visitors enjoyed fare from food trucks, a children’s play area that took up an entire soccer field and the requisite fireworks show drew its share of oohs and ahhs.
Sortal pointed out that the city’s Parks and Recreation Department had a full day, setting up the parade and then overseeing the evening at Central Park. He also lauded city police, fire, public works and other employees who worked as a team to make the day special.

REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Dancing together since age five, these butterflies thrilled the audience at twelve! Today, Paula Zapata, Indie Hurley, and Elizabeth Haeflinger are working hard to prepare for “The Fonteyn International Dance Competition” in London in October 2023. The Fonteyn, formerly the Genée, is the pinnacle of achievement for the Royal Academy of Dance candidates and is considered the Olympics of Ballet worldwide. While in London, these firm friends will spend a week training under-celebrated teachers and choreographers, dancing alongside qualified students worldwide! They will perform at His Majesty’s Theater in London’s West End!
International Dance Academy (IDA) is the ONLY school in South Florida that offers preparation and certification in the Royal Academy of Dance, whose patron for many decades was the late Queen Elizabeth II. Examinations start from age 6 with Primary and go through each year to Advanced II in their graduating year. IDA is proud of its 100% pass rate, with most dancers receiving
the highest mark of distinction. These certificates are impressive additions to college and university applications. Only dancers with distinction for their Advanced II examination qualify to dance in “The Fonteyn." Usually, between 30-35 dancers qualify worldwide. This year, IDA has three who qualified and have been accepted! An incredible achievement indeed!
The management and readers of Our City Media wish you Bon Voyage as you dance your way to London, representing THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston.

“I’M COMING HOME”
BCPS SELECTS PETER LICATA AS NEW SUPERINTENDENT
Broward County Public School Board (BCPS) announced the selection of Dr. Peter Licata as its next superintendent. The country’s sixth-largest school district announced the selection after a nationwide search. Licata is set to be in place prior to the start of the 2023/24 school year. He was selected via a 7-2 board vote. East Baton Rouge Louisiana School District Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse received the other two votes.
BCPS Board Chair Lori Alhadeff announced the selection, saying, “I am so excited to introduce the next superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Dr. Peter Licata. I believe he is the transformational leader that we were seeking.”
By joining BCPS, Licata is coming full circle, returning to the school district where he was once a first-grade student at McNab Elementary School in Pompano Beach.
“I’m coming home. We will change Broward County to an A (school district),” Dr. Licata said, “We are down the street from where I was born and where my wife was born.
Licata began his almost 30-year career in education as a teacher and basketball coach for the School District of Palm Beach County and has continued to advance his leadership career – most recently holding the position of South Region Superintendent. In this role, he oversees 60 schools, 65,000 students, more than 5,000 teachers and four instructional superintendents.
Licata comes from a family of teachers and was inspired to pursue his career by his father.
“It was at my father’s funeral, when thousands of people came to me to say what an impact, as coach and algebra teacher, my father had on their lives. That day I became a teacher.” Licata said during his public remarks at the school board’s public interview.
Licata’s experience includes 15 years of teaching and leading at the middle and high school levels, and 14 years at the district-leadership level as Director
of Secondary Curriculum and Assistant Superintendent, before becoming a regional superintendent.
“Our goal has remained to find the most qualified candidate to lead our schools while maintaining our dedication to excellence in education and to preparing our students to reach their highest potential,” Alhadeff commented. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Licata to Broward County Public Schools.”
During the interview process, the new superintendent laid out his vision to get the school system to become an ‘A’ district.
“It’s my vision and mission that every child that starts school at BCPS has an experience as memorable as mine with the same opportunities. I know being born and raised in Broward County doesn’t automatically qualify me as the best candidate, but I believe it gives me a unique perspective and knowledge of the county… Broward County is where I was born, raised, married, and I now want to make it the best educational system in all of Florida as superintendent.”

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BRACHYCEPHALIC DOG BREEDS
By Dr. Jennifer Frione
If you've ever spotted a dog with a smushed face and an adorable, wrinkled forehead, chances are you were gazing at a brachycephalic (brach·y·ce·phal·ic) breed. These unique canines have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe. But what exactly does "brachycephalic" mean? Well, it's a fancy term to describe breeds with short, broad skulls. Let’s take a closer look at these charming pups and uncover some interesting facts about their distinctive features!
They have the cutest faces!
One of the first things you'll notice about brachycephalic breeds is their comical appearance. Their pushed-in faces, big round eyes and wrinkled skin give them a perpetual expression that's hard to resist. Breeds like the English Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug are prime examples of these lovable characters. Their endearing looks often lead to mistaken assumptions that they are always grumpy, but don't be fooled by their frowns—these dogs are often bundles of joy and can be incredibly affectionate.
However, it's important to note that the unique facial structure of brachycephalic breeds can come with some health challenges. Their shortened airways can make breathing a bit more difficult, especially in hot weather or during exercise. This means that these pups might be prone to snoring, snorting and a bit of drooling. It's crucial for owners of brachycephalic breeds to be mindful of their pets' comfort, providing plenty of water, shade and rest during warmer days. This is especially important here in South Florida.
They have their own language
Another quirk that brachycephalic breeds possess is their penchant for emitting amusing snorts and grunts. These noises can be both endearing and entertaining and are often part of the breed's charm. It's as if they have their own language that only their fellow brachycephalic buddies can fully understand. These unique sounds can make your home feel like a comedy club, as they're sure to draw smiles and laughter from anyone lucky enough to witness them.
They’re gentle and kind
Despite the potential health challenges,
brachycephalic breeds remain a popular choice for many dog enthusiasts. Their manageable size, gentle nature and adorable looks make them wonderful companions for individuals and families alike. They often get along well with children and other pets, making them excellent additions to any household.
They’re slow and steady
When it comes to exercise, brachycephalic breeds are not marathon runners. Their short snouts and compromised respiratory systems mean they can quickly tire out. However, they still enjoy short walks and playtime, just be sure not to overexert them. Remember, they're not built for long hikes or intense activities, so it's essential to keep their limitations in mind.
Brachycephalic dog breeds are a unique and charming group of canines. While their distinctive appearance and adorable snorts make them stand out from the crowd, their health needs require special attention and care. If you're considering adding a brachycephalic pup to your family, make sure you're prepared to provide the love, patience and understanding they deserve.
They'll reward you with an abundance of affection and amusement that only a brachycephalic breed can offer.

Chick-fil-A and First Watch approved
The city approved a new Chick-fil-A at the southeast corner of University Drive and Sunrise Boulevard. The restaurant will be one of five new offerings south of the existing row that includes Chipotle, Habit Burger, Panda Express and Pieology.
City Administration and the City Council were concerned about cars stacking into University Drive as they enter the Chick-fil-A drive-through, but developers showed a traffic plan that contains a significant amount of vehicles expected to be accommodated on-site without extending past the designated drive-through lanes or into the adjacent roadways.
First Watch and three other yet-to-be-named restaurants are also planned in two buildings just south of Chick-fil-A.
Restaurant featured on "Check, Please!": Dutchy's Gourmet Sausages, a South African store and eatery, 401 S. State Road 7, was featured on a recent edition of “Check Please! South Florida” a restaurant-review show that airs on WPBT-Ch. 2. Catch a rerun of the episode by visiting the South Florida PBS YouTube channel.
Students excel in environment: Central Park Elementary Everglades Student Ambassadors led the pledge of allegiance during the June 7 City Council meeting. The students won the 2022-23 P3 Eco-Challenge in the overall school category. Their exemplary environmental stewardship earned the school the top prize of $2,000. Monika Moorman, a fourthgrade teacher at the school, is the club’s sponsor.
Electronic Permitting: Our system that electronically processes permit applications went live in November 2022. Since then, we received more than 4,000 online submittals. In recent months we've identified and addressed issues that caused bottlenecks. As a result, we made tremendous strides in reducing the backlog and are now almost all caught up.
If you are planning a project, have your contractor review information on the permitting page on our website. It can help you avoid delays and pitfalls. We also have a training session video, various tutorials and forms available on our E-permitting webpage.
State Appropriation: The City of Plantation is pleased to be included in the 2023-24 State of Florida budget. The City requested and received an appropriation in the amount of $225,000 to complete needed Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements.
We are matching this amount with funding of $225,000 from the municipal budget. These improvements will target the City’s municipal complex, which includes City Hall, the Development Services Building, and the Police Department. Funds became available after the commencement of the State’s budget year, July 1.
Green practices: The City has many green practices already in place throughout Plantation, such as the residential recycling program, environmentally friendly construction and demolition debris management requirements, miles of multi-use recreation trails, and the establishment of “healthy neighborhoods” such as Plantation Midtown, which makes it safer and easier for residents to navigate throughout the community without the use of a motorized vehicle. The City adopted an administrative policy banning the use of polystyrene (Styrofoam) products at events taking place on City property or in City facilities. This prohibition will be incorporated into City contracts and agreements going forward. The City also prohibits intentional release of helium filled balloons on City property.

AUGUST MEANS BACK TO SCHOOL!
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
August means back to school! Today, instead of math or history, it's all about planning for the future - estate planning to be exact!
Question #1: True or false? Do you have to appoint the same person for handling both your financial and your health choices if you are unable to? Absolutely not! You can pick different people who excel in different areas. Think of your friend who's a CPA or financial wizard and your daughter who knows their way around a stethoscope.
Many folks think that the person who looks after your children must be the same person who handles their inheritance. But that's a myth! You can pick a loving, caring guardian for your children and choose someone else entirely to manage the money side of things.
Let's say your own kids aren't quite cut out for the task of running your estate, maybe they're not the organizing type or they're too much of a perfectionist. In that case, it might be best to bring in a professional to take on the role. Not only could this save your assets, but it could also keep the family peace. Now that's what we call a win-win!
Question #2: True or false? If you never got around to making an estate plan or haven’t updated it in a while, Florida Law will do what your family “knows” you wanted.
False! Florida Law does step in to pick up the slack with some 'default settings', but that is a one-size-fits-most approach, and who wants that when you can have your own customized plan! Florida Law may provide that your spouse will make decisions, but you may not want your spouse to make your decisions, then remarry, disinheriting your children.
Big life changes - think weddings, divorces, retiring, switching jobs, or welcoming a new baby (or saying a sad goodbye to someone) - can all signal it's time to revisit your estate plan.
And let's not forget, tax laws and estate planning rules are constantly changing. So, it's a smart move to give your plan a regular health check. Even if you don't need to make any tweaks, catching up with your estate planning attorney for a review can offer peace of mind. After all, you want to be sure everything's in order when it really counts.
Question #3: True or false? A simple will is a cheaper, cloned version of a trust? False!
A will only kicks into action after you're gone, but a trust gets to work even if you can't, like during periods of illness. Plus, trusts skip the legal red tape of probate court. So, while a will might seem cheaper at first glance, a trust could save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
So, whether you aced the quiz or not, the key takeaway is this: keep your estate plan up-to-date and choose your decision-makers wisely. After all, it's your future we're talking about, and that's one test we all want to pass!

Rescue in the Drain: A Heartwarming Tale of Ducklings Saved by a Caring Community
Despite the challenging circumstances, they refused to give up, knowing that the worried mother duck anxiously awaited her little ones' safe return.
In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, a unique rescue mission unfolded last month that left Cooper City residents in awe. It all began when a group of adorable ducklings found themselves in a perilous situation, trapped in a stormwater drain. However, with the extraordinary efforts of a dedicated utility crew this story took a hear tening turn.
As news of the distressed ducklings spread, a sense of urgency filled the air. A Cooper City utility crew sprang into action, fully aware that every second counted.
With determination etched on their faces, the crew worked tirelessly, utilizing their specialized tools to carefully remove the drain cover and access the trapped ducklings.
However, it wasn't just the Utilities crew that played a role in this inspiring tale. The power of community and compassion became evident as our caring neighbors rallied together, offering their support and assistance. They formed a human chain, passing buckets and blankets to help with the rescue effort. The spirit of unity and kindness permeated the air, as everyone understood the importance of saving these innocent lives.
One by one, the little darlings were gently cradled and carried to safety. The relief on the mother duck's face was palpable as her beloved offspring were returned to her loving care.
This heartwarming rescue mission serves as a poignant reminder of the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause. It showcases the power of empathy, kindness, and perseverance in making a difference, no matter how small the creatures involved.
The heartwarming rescue mission will forever remain etched in our memories as a testament to the power of unity and the impact we can have when we extend a helping hand to those in need.
