“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties.

“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”

Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

MEET DENISE HORLAND COMMUNITY IS HER PASSION

andcivicDenise“believesengagementservicetoothersarethecornerstonestobuildingastrongercommunity.”

When not working, Denise enjoys spending time with her family (which includes two beloved rescue dogs), cooking, reading, and traveling. She feels it has been an honor to serve the residents of Plantation and give back to the community that has given so much to her own family. She hopes to continue her work for the next four years.

14 / Our City Plantation / September 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

Denise feels it is crucial to build relationships not just across the county but the state as well. "While Pensacola may be very different from Plantation, we often share some of the same challenges," she continues, "At the end of the day, we all want the same things for our communities. I want to utilize every resource I have to ensure I am serving the residents of Plantation effectively." Those resources helped when she facilitated a Condo Town Hall with the Florida Condo Ombudsman or assisted residents with unemployment issues duringDeniseCOVID-19.currently serves on the Broward League of Cities Board Directors, Florida League of Cities Advocacy and Municipal Administration Legislative Policy Committees, and the Broward County Planning Council. She also serves as Secretary on the Plantation Police Pension Board and earned her Certified Public Pension Trustee (CPPT) designation in 2021. Denise is proud that the city's three pension plans (police, fire, and general employees) have been managed responsibly and are on solid ground. Fiscal responsibility is of prime importance to Denise. She has pushed for greater transparency, especially with the city's $60 million ad valorem bond projects. While she has accomplished much, Denise feels there is much more she would like to achieve with the Council. During the next budget cycle, strategic planning sessions are one of her main goals. Denise feels it is vital to survey residents and business owners as part of the process. That feedback may then be utilized as the city creates a vision incorporating public safety, infrastructure needs, development, and resiliency plans. Housing affordability, transportation solutions, and redevelopment are all issues that need focused attention.

Setting down roots where the “grass is greener” is easy, but it is tending to those roots and watching them deepen through rela tionship-building and civic involvement that solidifies ones sense of community. And so it was for Denise Horland, who, along with her husband Robert, moved to the City of Plantation 29 years ago and began a journey that has been both rich and rewarding. Splitting her time between New York City and Arizona during much of her youth, Denise longed for a sense of permanence. She found it when she and Robert decided to make Plantation their home. Those early years were busy, with three children - including boy/girl twins - enrolled in the city's public schools and playing multiple sports with the Plantation Athletic League (PAL). Still, Denise somehow found time for community involvement. She states, "Initially you get involved for your children, then soon find that you can make a difference in the lives of other children, for other families." Her long involvement in education brought many recognitions, including being named a county-wide Volunteer of the Year for Broward County Public Schools. Denise believes civic engagement and service to others are the cornerstones to building a stronger community. She demonstrated that through her work with our schools and other organizations. Since she has never shied away from taking on leadership roles, few were surprised when Denise decided to run for the Plantation City Council in 2018. To her, it seemed a natural extension of her service to the community and a chance to further impact the city she loved. During the past four years on the Council, Denise has sought to make the job uniquely her own. She promised to be a "Fresh Voice for Plantation" and has been just that, bringing awareness to issues of concern as varied as mental health, gun safety, and human trafficking. She is proud of her responsiveness to residents and mentoring the city's youth. Her advocacy before the Legislature on issues such as short-term rentals saw her honored as Plantation's first-ever Home Rule Hero by the Florida League of Cities.

lantation says farewell to its Junior Women’s Club volunteer organiza tion with a well-attended affair at the Plantation Central Park corporate pavilion. Members and supporters made sure to say goodbye with smiles on their faces.

The club had more than 70 members. In addition to Art in the Park (created in 1966), the club in 1982 was the fulcrum to launch “Make-A-Wish” in South Florida, provided scholarships each year to students, and helped the environment with “trash to treasure” days. “The most important thing, though, was all the friends we made,” said Phelps, as people nearby pored over photo scrap books. “To see some of these friends today, my heart just went ‘oooohhh.’”

The final event of the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club consisted of tasty snacks, browsing through photo books, and lots of shared memories. The club’s signature event was “Art in the Park,” with rows and rows of artists displaying their wares for sale. The last “Art in the Park” was in 2019. Then Covid hit, and the club was unable to gather enough members to keep activities going. The club, founded in 1960, decided to disband. “Things move on, things change”, said Jamie Eisenstein, a member of about five years. The club was originally created for younger women in Plantation to work for common causes, with the intent of then moving on to the more established Plantation Woman’s Club. Once a woman crossed age 40, she supposedly “aged out” of the junior club, but many women said they declined to leave, and eventually the bylaws were changed. The clubs have different national charter organizations and have always been supportive of each other, members noted. Susie Phelps, who served as president in the late 1990s, was a member for more than 20 years. “It was unbelievable the things we accomplished,” she said. “We were actually doing some kind of project every month.”

Plantation city council member Nick Sortal stopped by the event to thank the women for their years of service. “We have a very strong spirit of volun teerism in this city,” Sortal said. “I’m just really proud of so many people who want to make our city better.”

I n 1957 twenty-one civic-minding residents of Plantation joined together to form the city’s first Volunteer Fire Department. The group included several of the city’s founders and operated out of an old warehouse located near Broward Boulevard and East Acre Drive. Little did they know they were setting a standard of service that continues to today. In 1960 the first fire station was built on Broward Boulevard at East Acre. Throughout its 65-year history the department has continually grown to meet the needs of the residents. Fire Station #2, which also housed the administrative offices, was added in 1974. Today, The Plantation Fire Department is a “combination department.” It is comprised of a volunteer Suppression Division, career Emergency Medical Service Division, a Fire and Life Safety Division, and maintenance/mechanic divisions. The Department operates six stations strategi cally placed throughout the City. The Department currently serves an area of 22 square miles, a residential population of 94,000, and a daytime population in excess of 150,000. The lifeblood of a volunteer fire department is its members. The Plantation Fire Department is the largest volunteer fire department in Florida, with more than 190 active firefighters. There are many benefits to volunteering as a Plantation Firefighter, these include: Professional training in firefighting, EMS, hazardous materials, and leadership. Financial reimbursement for time spent. Credits toward pension and retirement. Lifelong experiences you won’t get any where else. 250 of the closest friends you’ll

or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands; biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner; and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury. A supinated or high arch, that is flexible, can also cause pain and present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well. Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner who does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes on late afternoon. This is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow full recoil of the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes, flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of sup portive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. What are the best socks for runners? Socks are essential in terms of injury prevention and athletic performance. Synthetic Acrylic/CoolMax® fiber socks are ideal for the distance runner in order to prevent friction skin injuries. Many running stores have sport-specific socks with thickened padding for prominent areas on the feet to prevent mechanical or shear-induced injury to the deep tissue and bone.

We believe we are not your typical Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts, Elder Law, and Probate Law firm. We provide a human touch for our Estate Planning, Elder Law, and Probate Clients. We make our clients feel at home with our “Giving hugs and holding hands” approach. Our goal is to take the fear out of the Estate Planning or Probate process. We want to hear our clients say, “that was Easy!” or “now I can sleep tonight knowing my family is protected.” Sounds great! Estate planning can be stressful for families. Why did you focus on this area of law? When my father passed away, I noticed how unprepared my mother was to deal with the loss. My promise is to help families organize and prepare for the future so their family and friends have a complete under standing of what their loved one wanted and how to go about handling the passing with the least amount of additional stress. I have dedicated my legal career to help ing people as if they were my own family. I ensure that my clients are treated with the respect, professionalism, and empathy that every person deserves. That is inspiring. What should a new client expect from Jakob Legal? We hope to go beyond the traditional law firm experience by trying to provide a “wow” experience to each client. We do not just prepare a pretty Estate Plan binder and say goodbye; we make sure our clients understand the plan they have put in place and are given all the organizational tools for a successful plan. Our clients will always meet with an attorney, usually myself for Estate Planning, or our Staff Probate Attorney, Erika, who also is Bilingual and works with clients who are more comfortable speaking Spanish.

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.

Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”

Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.

Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com

Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.

Surgical Oncology & Pancreatic Surgical Oncology

Medical Director, ATLAS ONCOLOGY: Institute for Pancreatic Ca IRE NanoKnife Ablation

Dr Donoway has been repeatedly named to Top Doctor‘s in America by Castle Connolly. Dr Donoway is one of only a few international surgeons performing advanced multi-modal pancreatic and liver ablation therapy for non-resectable tumors.
